Production at Freeport Indonesia's Ertsberg open pit copper-gold mine started in 1972 at a rate of 7.5 kt/d (8270 stpd). Mill throughput remained at that rate for several years until the discovery of the Ertsberg East (GBT) ore body. This discovery prompted three succes¬sive expansion stages from 1981 to 1988 that boosted production to 20 kt/d (22,000 stpd). In 1988, the discovery of the huge Grasberg porphyry copper deposit launched an era of much larger expansions. The first of these was the installation of a fourth primary mill in 1989 that increased throughput to 32 kt/d (35,270 stpd). That was followed by an expansion of the crushing and screening plant and in 1991 the addition of a new south concentrator to bring production to 57 kt/d (62,830 stpd). The addition of a primary ball mill and the changeout of the original Denver flotation cells in 1993 brought production to its current level of 66 kt/d (72,750 stpd).

At Henderson Operations the 24-kilometer conveyor system consists of three main conveyors with lengths of 1.2 km, 16.7 km and 6 km. Upon commissioning of the conveyor system, the Henderson maintenance department was challenged with the inspection and monitoring of over 50,000 idlers. To take a proactive approach to idler maintenance, an idler tracking database system was developed. Using the idler tracking program, the Henderson Crush & Convey department now has the ability to provide data for engineering solutions to idler problems and to manage thousands of idlers for priority replacement work and warranty purposes. Recognizing the potential for injury to Henderson employees in the process of idler handling, Henderson approached idler replacement as a material handling process. Material handling solutions have resulted in failed idlers being replaced and discarded from the underground environment without ever touching a human hand. This paper will detail how Henderson tracks idlers in all primary conveyor belts and how an innovative idler handling system can result in reduced risks to conveyor maintenance employees.

The wind tunnel has been used extensively for mine ventilation research and continues to be a valuable tool. The advent of the powerful personal computer has reduced the use of wind tunnels because several flow problems car be simulated and investigated quickly. This paper describes the recent design and construction of a wind tunnel which is now being used for mine ventilation aerodynamic research and teaching purposes. The wind tunnel has a square cross section measuring 900 by 900 mm and is 8485 mm long from the entrance to where it joins the fan. The tunnel was designed as an open circuit suction type and is attached to a 7.5 kW variable pitch axial flow fan capable of producing over 6 m3/s of airflow. The entire length of the wind tunnel can be used for flow investigations and all activities are visible since the sides are made of plexiglass. Results are presented from the test program to show that even without honeycombs and screens air flow symmetry is achieved.

Boddington Gold Mine commenced operation in 1987 with an initial production of 3.0 Mt/y at a grade of 3.5 git. Head grade has reduced over the life of the mine and the major response to the drop in grade has been to increase mining rates and increase plant throughput. A capital expansion was carried out in 1996 increasing the throughput to 6.0 Mt/y and since that date tonnage has been increased without major capital expenditure. BGM's current mill throughput is 8.77 Mt/y ( 1999). In 1999 the combined basement plant and direct leach plant processed 8,770,055 tonnes to produce 233,507 ozs or 7.262882 tonnes of gold at an average head grade of 0.83 git. With grades of 0.83 git, and gold price at record lows, $US251.95loz in August 1999 or $A393.67loz it has been necessary to make and maintain major cost savings to remain profitable. Boddington Gold Mine has achieved this by a number of steps including a productivity study by outside consultants.

Coal mines in the United States are the most productive in the world in terms of efficient labor employment. This is because of an abundance of workable coal beds, large infusions of capital, improved management practices and continuing competitive pressures. The standard unit of measurement for labor productivity is expressed as tons/manshift, although for underground mines, operators often refer to tons per machineshift. Articles written concerning labor productivity generally focus on measurement techniques, safety considerations, application of technology and training. This article will illustrate by example the impact of labor efficiency (or inefficiency) on the ultimate selling price of coal, f.o.b. mine site. During the past several years, the coal industry has seen significant improvement in labor use. Figure 1 shows the trends in productivity for all active mines in the United States from 1985 through 1994. Productivity in 1985 was 20.1 t/manshift (22.1 st/ manshift). This factor has increased almost linearly throughout that period to 37.5 t/manshift (41.2 st/manshift). This is a 7.2% annual compound growth rate.

The Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) has been working since mid-1977 on a fast track to meet a court-imposed schedule to rehabilitate a large wastewater collection and treatment system at an estimated cost of $1.7 billion. Because of glaciation, the Milwaukee area has an extremely complex geologic environment. The rock surface ranges from outcroppings in the northern and western parts of the area to 76 m (250 ft) below the surface at the mouth of the Milwaukee and Menomonee Rivers. Bedrock beneath the glacial mantle is a thick sequence of early to middle Paleozoic sedimentary rock. To cope with the many complexities of this large public works project, a Program Management Office (PMO) concept has been employed. A Geotechnical Engineering Group was established within the PMO to provide a continuous , unified approach to geotechnical engineering and full disclosure of all geotechnical information in the construction contract documents. It provides qeotechnical engineering to design and construction, develops and maintains a qeotechnical data base, and participates on the claims resource team.

Highly stressed rock in stopes continues to be a primary safety risk for miners in underground mines because it can result in failures of ground that lead to both injuries and death. Spokane Research Laboratory personnel investigated electromagnetic (EM) emissions in a deep under-ground mine in an effort to determine if these emissions could be used as indicators of impending catastrophic ground failure. Results suggest that (1) there is no increase in the number of EM emissions prior to recorded seismic activity, (2) some EM signals are generated during blasting, (3) interference from mine electrical sources mask seismic-generated EM signals, (4) EM emissions do not give enough warning (compared to seismic monitoring) to permit miners to leave a stope, (5) the distance an EM signal can travel in the rock is between 17.7 and 39.6 m (58 and 130 ft), and (6) current data acquisition systems do not differentiate between EM signals generated from seismic activity and random mine electrical noise. These results preclude monitoring EM emissions as precursors of impending catastrophic ground failure.

All Sanitary District contract documents for new tunnel construction permit the Contractor a choice of four (4) separate alternate tunnel sections. This is the result of a continuing District policy to encourage at all times the use of the most suitable construction techniques and to attract to District construction the broadest spectrum of proven capabilities. Figure 1 indicates the alternate tunnel sections allowed on District contracts as follows: 1. A horse shoe section, ribbed and lagged, and a poured reinforced concrete tunnel liner; 2. Circular section, ribbed and lagged, and a poured in place reinforced concrete tunnel liner; 3. Circular section, ribbed and lagged, and a precast reinforced concrete pipe liner grouted in place; and 4. Circular section, no temporary lining, and a precast reinforced concrete pipe liner to be jacked in place. The Sanitary District now has in operation 10,500' of 5'6" I.D. and 6,500' of 5'0" I.D. jacked tunnel. An additional 5,600' of 7'6" I.D. jacked tunnel is currently under construction.

During 1982, record advances have been achieved in the excavation of vertical shafts with a V-Mole (a vertical shaft boring machine). The V-Mole, supplied by Wirth GmbH in Erkelenz, West Germany, has been used in West German coal mines since the early seventies, mainly for the construction of internal shafts. In 1981, it was brought into the United States for the construction of a series of ventilation shafts with depths varying between 512 m (1680 ft.) and 622 m (2040 ft.) excavated to 7.0 m (23 ft.) diameter. These shafts were needed for the development of coal mines for Jim Walter Resources, Inc. in Brookwood, Alabama. After a description of the mechanized shaft excavation system with the V-Mole, the conditions and parameters, such as ground, shaft dimensions, and linings are discussed. These factors are important considerations for a technically and economically feasible utilization of the V-Mole. In addition, the advantages and disadvantages of using the V-Mole technology in comparison to other shaft construction methods are evaluated.

INTRODUCTION The purpose of this article is to outline the data requirements for selecting a proper underground mining method and to discuss the general steps taken in selecting that method. Determining the appropriate mining method is an iterative process that continues throughout the life of a mineral deposit. We will discuss the subject from the standpoint of a feasibility study, where a realistic assessment is necessary in order to determine investment merit. The feasibility stage of a project is that point where the drilling program has defined sufficient geologic reserves to consider mining the deposit but little or no underground development has been done. Primary parameters for consideration in choosing a mining method are 1) geometry of the deposit; 2) distribution of grade; 3) rock mass strength for the deposit, as well as the hanging wall and footwall; 4) mining cost and capitalization requirements; 5) mining rate; 6) type and availability of labor; 7) environmental considerations; and 8) other site-specific conditions. Of these parameters, the first four have the most impact on determining the general mining method to be employed.

This paper presents an analysis of the dynamics of bit wear on the productivity of continuous miners. Two field surveys were carried out. The first survey assessed the impact of bit wear on productivity and production cost. The second survey studied the wear characteristics of the cutting tool (i.e., magnitude, forms, and mechanisms of bit wear, Primary factors affecting bit wear were identified. Laboratory experiments were carried out to study in detail the effect of some of these primary factors on wear. Results indicate, that bit wear has a significant effect on the productivity a continuous miners. Furthermore, under severe geologic conditions (i.e. cutting rock partings in roof and floor) bit wear not only hampers the productivity, but also increase the production cost due to a higher consumption of bits. This study also indicated that beyond 20% of the conical height loss (which corresponds to 7% of the weight loss) the rate a bit wear accelerates. This increased rate of wear is an indication of higher abrasion between bit body and cutting material, resulting in a dustier environment.

INTRODUCTION Probably the most important family of chemicals used in mineral processing today is a category of basic commodity chemicals loosely denoted as pH regulators. Typical chemicals which are referred to as pH regulators include lime, magnesium hydroxide, soda ash, caustic soda, ammonia, sulfuric acid, and hydrochloric acid. These chemicals are often used in very significant amounts in almost all of the major mineral processing operations such as flotation, hydrometallurgy, etc. (in dosages up to ten pounds per ton of feed ore treated). While cheaper in cost per unit weight of chemical than more specific chemicals such as collectors, frothers, extractents, etc., the overall cost to the mill operator is generally higher with pH regulators per ton of ore processed than with any other given processing chemical. For example, a rough rule of thumb in sulfide mineral flotation is that the cost of lime is double that of the collector(s) used. The symbol pH is used to designate hydrogen ion concentration. When acids, salts, and bases are dissolved in water, individual molecules are dissociated into their constituent radicals or ions. The strength of an acid or a base increases with the extent of such dissociation or ionization. An alkaline solution is one in which the number of Qydroxyl ions (OH ) exceeds the hydrogen ions (H ). In an acid solution, the hydrogen ions predominate. In either case, both ions are always present as water itself ionizes to a limited extent, that is: [ ] The pH scale is logarithmic and the pH value is the negative of the logarithm (base 10) of the molar concentration of hydrogen ions per liter of solution. For example, a pH of 5 means that the molar concentration of hydrogen ions per liter is 0.00001 (1 x 10-5). Likewise, a pH of 9 means that the molar concentration of hydrogen ions per liter is 1 x 10-9. Normally, the relationship between hydrogen ion and hydroxyl ion concentration is based on the relationship: Concentration of H ion x concentration of OH- ion = constant. Eq. (1) In dilute and/or moderately concentrated solutions that are normally used in mineral procygsing processes, the constant at 25°C is 10-14. On the pH scale, the value of pH equal to 7 represents the hydrogen ion concentration of a neutral solution. pH values lower than pH 7 indicate increasing acidity and higher values than 7 indicate alkalinity. Table 1 shows the nature of the pH scale at 25°C. Temperature affects the extent of ionization of dissolved acids, salts, bases, and water so that the hydrogen ion concentration (hence pH) of a solution is also affected by temperature. As a means of demonstrating this dependency, Table 2 shows the change of the exponent of the constant (base 10) in Eq. 1 and the pH value corresponding to neutrality as a function of temperature. It is also important, for example, that alkalinity or acidity expressed by pH not be confused with total alkalinity or total acidity. For example, total alkalinity is commonly determined by titration with a standard acid solution (usually HC1). pH is a measure of the hydroxyl ion concentration of an alkaline solution, whereas titration is a measure of an alkaline solution's acid neutralizing capacity. Thus, if one takes a series of various alkaline solutions prepared using different chemicals but all of exactly the same pH (and temperature) and then subsequently carries out a titration on each solution with a standard acid, it would be observed that the various alkaline solutions would neutralize entirely different amounts of acid. As an example, 0.08 grams of caustic (NaOH) , 6.32 grams of soda ash (Na2CO3), and 8.17 grams of ammonium hydroxide (NH4OH) all have a pH of 11.3 at 25°C. One liter of each of the above solutions neutralizes 0.073, 4.348 and 8.496 grams of HC1, respectively. Introduction Potassium, together with nitrogen and phosphorous, is an essential nutrient required for growth. Since all living things need potash, the major demand for potash - about 95% of the total - is as a fertilizer. Agricultural productivity has increased dramatically in recent times. This increase in crop yields requires substantial amounts of added nutrients to keep the soil fertile. It follows then that potash will always be in demand. There is no substitute. Other fertilizers that contain phosphorous (P) and nitrogen (N) are complementary and not competing products. Fireplace ashes (pot-ashes) have a relatively high potassium content. Their value as a fertilizer had been recognized for centuries. But today's potash industry did not begin until deposits of potassium-rich ore were discovered and exploited in Europe during the 19th century. Canadian potash development Potash in Saskatchewan was first recognized in 1943. It was discovered as a byproduct of an oil exploration program. But it was several years later before the existence of a major commercial deposit was acknowledged, and not until 1951 that the first attempt at development occurred. That attempt was unsuccessful. The shaft flooded and was abandoned. It did, however, demonstrate the need for new technology to penetrate the waterlogged Blairmore layer. This was eventually developed and the first mines were brought into production in the early 1960s. Once the technology was available, and the extent and quality of the potash beds became known, a number of companies proceeded to develop mines. By 1970, seven mines were in operation and three more were nearing completion. Combined, total capacity then was 7.6 Mt/a (8.4 mil¬lion stpy) K20. At that time, world potash consumption was about 15 Mt/a (16.5 million stpy). This increase in supply from Canada produced a large potential surplus that shattered the prevailing balance between supply and demand. Although world demand increased steadily throughout the 1960s and early 1970s, it was several years before world supply and demand were again in balance. Saskatchewan capacity has been expanded a number of times. It now stands at 10.7 Mt/a (11.7 million stpy) K20. Actual production has not approached this figure, however. Two new mines in New Brunswick have recently been built with a combined annual capacity of 1.2 Mt (1.3 million st) K20. Total Canadian capacity of about 12 Mt/a (13 million stpy) now amounts to 30% of world capacity. Central offshore marketing organization Canadian Potash Exports Ltd. (Canpotex) was created in 1970 as the offshore marketing organization for Canadian producers. Canpotex is owned by Saskatchewan producers and is their exclusive marketing organization for offshore business. Each company handles its own sales in Canada and the US, but all sales to other markets are handled through and by Canpotex. The Saskatchewan industry has an ore body of a size and consistency unmatched anywhere in the world. Large efficient mines have production costs that compare favorably with other producing countries. On the minus side, Saskatchewan is remote from most major markets. It therefore needs the ef¬ficiencies that stem from one organization that coordinates all offshore shipments and minimizes distribution costs. Agriculture guides potash market In the period following World War II, potash was a classic growth industry. World demand increased each year from 1945 to early 1970s. Since then, demand has been more erratic. Some years show substantial increases, but are followed by significant declines. For about the last decade, the pattern has been unclear and future demand has become correspondingly difficult to predict. North America and Europe together account for about 40% of the world potash consumption. In both areas, farming is characterized by surplus production, declining crop prices, and expensive government support programs. Under those circumstances, farmers respond by minimizing input costs. Fertilizer is one of the items they reduce. Potash is retained in the soil. It is possible to reduce potash application with no immediate deterioration in crop yield. Waste phosphatic clay presents a difficult disposal problem and a significant loss of P2O5. Recent developments make this study on the use of phosphatic clay as a feed material for H3PO4 production worthwhile. (a) New data from Florida Industrial and Phosphate Research Institute (FIPR) suggest that the Bclay^ waste can be effectively treated by improved solid separation coupled with flotation to produce feed material for recovering additional phosphate. (b) The use of BOLI Flowsheet^ provides capability to predict performance of aqueous-based processes for a range of possible operating conditions. Using the new FIPR data and BOLI Flowsheet^ enabled the design of a new process that can potentially extend the usefulness of current P2O5 ore deposits. Predictions using OLI Flowsheet were able to identify process conditions that effectively overcome the difficulty of high Mg content of phosphatic clay. Estimated manufacturing cost in the current study lead to valuation of the P2O5 content of the phosphatic clay recovered/utilized at 60 to 70% of that of the phosphate rock feed material currently used. Phosphatic clay should be considered as a valuable material that is currently given zero value. The new FIPR data and BOLI Flowsheet^ enables the design of a new process that can potentially extend the usefulness of current phosphate ore deposits by extending the fraction P2O5 of recovered

Development of the New York City Water Supply System The New York City water supply system serves a population of almost nine million, including residents in neighboring counties. Peak day demands on the system are currently running at about 70 m3/sec (about 1,600 mgd), which is significantly lower than in the 1990s. This trend of reducing demands over the past 25 years, which has been experienced in other major urban centers in the US, is mainly the result of conservation measures and increased cost consciousness on the part of water users. In the long term, demands are expected to once again follow an increasing trend with population growth, so that by the end of the planning horizon of these studies, the year2045, the peak day demand is expected to increase to about 85 m3/sec (2,000 mgd).The system is served largely by surface water sources, regulated by a system of 19reservoirs and three controlled lakes, which are connected to the City by a series of aqueducts, the longest of which is about 87 km (54 miles). The total storage in the sys-tem amounts to about 560 billion gallons, providing a system firm yield of about1300 mgd. The Delaware system provides about 50% of the City’s water, the Catskill about 40%, with the remaining 10% provided by the Croton. The system as a whole, which is shown on Figure 1, has been built up over the past 150 years, and is truly a marvel of engineering. The Catskill and Delaware aqueducts both discharge into Kensico Reservoir, which is a daily balancing reservoir located in Westchester County about 24 km(15 miles) north of the New York City line. The two aqueducts extend south for a further 14 miles to combine again at Hillview Reservoir in the Bronx, which provides hourly balancing storage for New York City system. The Croton aqueduct runs nearby as shown on Figure 2, but does not connect into the two reservoirs. From Hillview Reservoir the water is supplied to the city via three main distribution tunnels, known as City Tunnels 1, 2, and 3. City Tunnel No.1 was developed in the 1920s as part of the Catskill system. City Tunnel No. 2 followed in the 1960s as part of the Delaware system. City Tunnel No. 3 (CT3) is partly under construction and partly in operation, and is being implemented to permit the other distribution tunnels to be taken out of operation for the first time for inspection and maintenance. The telephone rings at 3:20 a.m. An exasperated voice on the other end says, “There has been a mine explosion at Mine No. 5 and we have not heard from three units of men.” Twenty-three minutes later, the phone rings again and another panicked voice says, “There is something wrong at the slurry impoundment, the pool level has just dropped five feet and we are trying to figure out what is wrong” Thirty minutes later, the mobile phone rings. An excited security guard says, “We have reports of thick black water running down the right fork and left fork of Straight Creek and both seem to be rising in the banks.” If this is not enough excitement, the mobile phone rings again. A stressed company official says, “I just heard a report that black slurry is running out of the portals of XYZ Co. No. 2 Mine, which is adjacent to our No. 5 Mine.” Is this all some kind of dream or nightmare? More importantly, though, if this happens, what do you do? Most people think: “It can’t happen to me.” But mine explosions do happen, slurry impoundments can rupture and creeks can flood with black water causing damage to others, including competitors. A mine’s response must be quick, cool-headed, calculated and effective. This article examines the issues, concerns and ramifications of this hypothetical disaster. The authors then present a systematic crisis-management response.

The Bureau of Mines, under a Cooperative Agreement with the Bear Coal Company, Somerset, Colorado, conducted a large scale evaluation of the effect of time lapse on roof stability. Time lapse in this study is the interval between exposure and permanent support of the mine roof. The study indicates that time lapse is not a critical factor in roof stability provided permanent support is installed before catastrophic failure begins. Concurrently with the time lapse study, investigations were made of stress distribution around resin-grouted bolts, the regional stress field, and anomalous geologic conditions. The behavior of the resin-grouted bolts, at least in the Bear mine, appears to fit the Coulomb-Navier Theory. Geologic conditions are primary factors in trends of roof stability that extend across the mine.

Spokane Research Center personnel have been investigating the use of seismic tomography to monitor the behavior of a rock mass, detect hazardous ground conditions, and assess the mechanical integrity of a rock mass affected by mining. Seismic tomography can be a valuable tool for determining relative stress in deep ( > 1220 m) underground pillars. If high-stress areas are detected, they can be destressed prior to development or avoided. High-stress areas can be monitored with successive seismic surveys to determine if stress decreases to a level where development can be initiated safely. There are several benefits to using seismic tomography to identify high stress in deep underground pillars. The technique is reliable, cost-effective, efficient, and non-invasive. Also, investigators can monitor large rock masses, as well as monitor pillars during the mining cycle. By identifying areas of high stress, engineers will be able to assure that miners are working in a safer environment.

When addressing Germany’s resource supplies, we need to distinguish between those domestically available and imported ones. Resource extraction ostensibly competes with the designation of protection areas. However, the parallel existence of wildlife and plant life, and operations in the areas used for resource extractions is continually underestimated. The European Commission has compiled guidance documents facilitating the extraction of resources from protected areas. With regard to resource productivity, the market appears to be the appropriate instrument for minimising resource consumption. Policy makers are now called upon to create a legal framework leading to a consensus accepted by society.
