Influence of frothers (a-terpineol and n-octanol) concentration on kinetics of a three phase contact (TPC) formation by a bubble colliding with a hydrophobic surface (Teflon) of different roughness was studied using a high-speed camera (1040 frames per second). It was found that the Teflon surface roughness and the frother concentration strongly affected time of the TPC formation (tTPC) and time of drainage (tD) of the liquid film separating the colliding bubble from the solid surfaces. With increasing Teflon surface roughness, from ca 1 to 80 µm, the time of the TPC formation was shortened by over the order of magnitude, from ca 100 to a few milliseconds only. At low a-terpineol and n-octanol concentrations, thetTPC values were shorter than in distilled water due to lowering the bubble velocity in the frother presence and diminished bouncing of the colliding bubble. However, at high frothers concentrations the tTPC values were prolonged, despite that the bubble velocity was similar. The prolongation of the tTPC at high frother concentrations indicates that air (micro- and/or nano-bubbles) was present at the Teflon surfaces of different roughness. The mechanism of the tTPCprolongation at high frother dosage is described.

With implementation of stringent environmental regulations, ultra clean coal technology development programs have gained significant importance worldwide. As far as Indian scenario is concerned, most of the coals present in India are of drift origin and low grade, containing high mineral matter varying from 15% to greater than 50%. The inorganic or ash constituents of Indian coals are finely disseminated through the organic or carbonaceous constituents so, that commonly used physical beneficiation techniques are of only limited value in affecting separation. Chemical processes involve addition of chemicals, which react with the mineral matter and allow its easy removal. The present study envisages the effect of aqueous alkali leaching followed by acid washing on the removal of mineral matter from two different captive coals of Tata Steel at elevated temperature and pressure. The experiments are conducted at desired conditions using a bench scale pressure reactor set up having proper data acquisition and control system. The research study revealed, that it is possible to reduce the ash content up to 70% by this method. The alkali content of the product clean coal does not increase whereas the silica and alumina content reduces by nearly 58% and 62% respectively. Significant reduction in the phosphorus content is observed after the acid treatment. The crucible swelling number of the feed coal improves after the treatment. The mechanism of demineralisation was evaluated by analyzing the coal samples before and after the alkali and acid treatment using scanning electron microscope (SEM). Because of the acidic nature of the silicates and aluminates, they dissolve into the NaOH solution and form sodalite. Sodalite is partially soluble in the alkali solution. The hydrates formed during alkali treatment are partially removed due to acid wash. This study in overall provides an insight into possible alternative methods of beneficiation for removal of ash from high ash Indian coals.

Froth flotation is a physico-chemical separation process that takes place in two phases; pulp and froth phase. It is widely recognised as a complex process, due to the range of interactions present within the system. Of critical importance is the role of the froth phase within the system. The pulp kinetics governs the maximum potential recovery within a flotation cell, while the froth phase governs the selectivity via the froth?s stability. Higher froth stability improves recovery at the expense of grade, and lower froth stability improves selectivity. It is well known that the two major factors affecting froth stability are attached particles and solution chemistry. This paper looks at a flotation bank at different froth depth and frother concentrations. The air recovery to the concentrate is determined at each condition and relates the effect of the operating conditions on froth stability and transport to the amount of solids that are recovered to the froth and concentrate by true flotation. The results presented show that, for a given process objective, which in this case was a consistent mass pull profile, depending on the operating conditions, solids recovery in the pulp is affected by the air rate required to maintain the target mass pull. To a smaller extent, the changes in the pulp composition affect down-stream pulp recovery. The variation in solids recovered into the froth drives the froth stability at the start of the flotation bank, while the frother drives the froth stability at the end of the bank. The performance in between these two extreme conditions arises from an interaction of these two effects. The consequences of these interactions can give rise to counter-intuitive responses that can confound efforts to optimise the performance of the bank.

In cyanide leaching procedure, achieving an acceptable efficiency for silver and gold is very time-consuming, thus, enough studies have not been performed for optimization and modeling of this process. The kinetics of cyanide leaching includes two steps: first step comprises a sharp slope while the other has a slight increasing trend. In the present study, in order to reduce the time and cost, the cyanide leaching process of a sulfide silver/gold ore was optimized in the first period. The applied parameters and their ranges are: temperature 20-40 (°C); time 1-8 (hrs); cyanide concentration 1-2 (mole cyanide / mole Cu); the percentage of solid to liquid 1-2 (%) and pH 10-12. For design of experiments fractional factorial 2(5-1) was used. Also four center points were applied to increase the accuracy of the model. In addition, by analysis of variance (ANOVA) the most effective parameters were identified and the optimized condition was determined. A regression model was proposed to describe the effects of independent variables and their interacting role on silver recovery. Results showed that the model was linear for silver and nonlinear for gold. In the gold recovery process, the two important parameters are time and pH with the former being more effective. Due to the existence of cyanide ions in the medium, temperature and cyanide concentration have less influence in the gold recovery process. Solid to liquid ratio, in addition, comprises a slight negative impact on the procedure. This emphasizes the different kinetics of silver/ gold cyanide leaching. Finally, using the optimum condition the amount of silver and gold obtained were 61% and 67% in 8 hours, respectively. In this manuscript, a new approach for modeling the rate of grinding process is explained. A review about grinding rate definitions so far is given and the possible ultimate way for grinding modeling is given as modeling the rate based on energy spectra. The traditional/phenomenological approaches for modeling size distribution of grinding mills give their place to a new generation modeling technique. Developments in the computational methods and necessity to model product size distribution of large mills, larger than ball mill size, paved the way for this novel technique. The traditional grinding rate models are mostly based on the back calculated breakage parameters from the experimental data. However, direct modeling of breakage parameters and hence the prediction of size distribution of the grinding mills may become possible with this approach. The material breakage data and discrete element method (DEM) energy spectra are the main components of this approach. Albeit the focus in this study is on modeling of breakage rate under impact mode of breakage, the abrasion mode of breakage was also tested by carrying out abrasion tests. Impact mode of breakage was analyzed using ultra-fast load cell device (UFLC) and drop weight tester. Dry tumbling test was carried out for abrasion experiments. Obtained material breakage versus energy data are combined with the collision energy spectra to obtain the breakage rate function. In addition, the material breakage versus energy information from the tests is converted into breakage distribution function. The model was verified in a lab scale mill (90 cm diameter-15 cm length). 10 to 15 kg of limestone was ground using 50 mm steel ball at varying conditions, i.e., rpm, volume loading. It is shown that the proposed model predicts all (1, 2, 4 min.) grinding intervals for all experiments highly accurate.

We have investigated the breakage actions of solid particles observed in a new generation fluid energy micronizer being set up at our laboratories. The attention has been focussed in particular on breakage caused by interparticle collision, particle impact against a fixed surface, interparticle attrition and particle against wall of jet mill attrition. We have also studied the influence of grain size distribution, maximum particle size, flow rate and characteristics of the solid to be processed, as well as of flow rate and pressure of injected air on the above mechanism. Lastly, the operating parameters of a dynamic air classifier in closed circuit with the micronizer for recovering the fine fraction and automatically recycling the oversize, have been optimized. The findings of this investigation have been used to design, build and fine tune a micronizer capable of controlling the top size of a product having average particle size that meets market requirements for fine powders, while keeping power consumption relatively low.

To improve gold recovery from preg-robbing carbonaceous ores a technology including gravity, flotation, recleaning of the flotation concentrate, intensive cyanidation of the gravity concentrate and carbon-in-leach (CIL) process for intensive cyanidation tailings and the recleaned concentrate was developed. The final flotation tailings are shipped to tailings disposal. Total gold recovery by the proposed technology from the ore with the head grade of 0.8 g/t was 83.9%. The gold loading onto the activated carbon from CIL process was 6.5 g/kg.

Fengning ilmenite ore is a magnetic deposit in gabbro containing high phosphorus and low titanium, the main minerals in which are ilmenite, magnetite and apatite. The dissemination size of magnetite is so fine that even the percentage of -0.010mm level is up to 36.50%. The fine and vein magnetite are distributed in gangue and ilmenite, so the majority of the magnetite is difficult to be separated from the gangue. Ilmenite is difficult to be recovered by low-intensity magnetic separation even through fine grinding. In high-intensity magnetic separation of ilmenite, the gangue inter-growth with the magnetite and the Fe-containing silicates may be enriched in the concentrate, and the ilmenite of the concentrate will be reduced. Based on the processing mineralogy research, combined gravity-flotation process is suggested to recover the ilmenite. The method is also good to reduce phosphorus in the ilmenite concentrate.

Gums are often used as depressants for talceous gangue minerals in the flotation of nickel and platinum bearing ores. However, the mechanisms of gum adsorption on talc are not clearly established. In this work, adsorption of guar gum at the talc-solution interface is investigated using spectroscopic and allied techniques. Guar gum adsorption on talc is not affected significantly by changes in solution conditions such as pH and ionic strength. Electrokinetic studies showed that guar gum decreased the negative zeta potential of talc but did not reverse the charge. Fluorescence spectroscopy studies conducted to investigate the role of hydrophobic bonding using pyrene and dansyl probes showed no evidence of the formation of hydrophobic domains at talc-aqueous interface. Urea, a hydrogen bond breaker, reduced the adsorption of guar on talc to the same extent as that for guar/alumina system, in which hydrogen bond plays an important role. All of the above results suggest that one of the main driving forces for guar adsorption on talc is hydrogen bonding rather than electrostatic or hydrophobic force.

"For the traditional principle of flotation cell design, or in the perspective of some researchers, the mixing effect of impeller for flotation cell is not only to suspend the particles off the bottom, but also to mix slurry well to achieve a uniform system. But for some special processing conditions, the depth profile of slurry concentration and particle size demonstrates an obvious difference. In the part around of the impeller in the cell, the slurry concentration is much higher than the part below the lip.For the vanadium titano-magnetite flotation process, distinguished with high concentration and large coarse particle size fraction, even though the concentration is very high, it can reach good gas dispersion, which is a fundamental principle for flotation cell design and application. The gas dispersion is not a challenge in the high slurry concentration environment, not only in the vertical direction, but in the cross section. Different levels (the distance from the lip is 400mm, 700mm, 1200mm, 1700mm, 2200mm, 2700mm) slurry in the flotation cell is sampled and analyzed. The slurry concentration of the 3 levels(1700mm, 2200mm, 2700mm) is about 55%, but the slurry concentration decreases from 55% to 25% sharply towards the lip.Therefore, a new understanding and viewpoint is presented, that the uniform system of slurry is not always reasonable for all of the flotation process. For some special process, if the coarse particles are needed to agitated well and transported to the upper cell, the quiescent zone in the upper cell will be destroyed and enhance the detachment probability for the coarse particles. The difference of slurry concentration and particle size fraction benefits the air dispersion and coarse mineral particles recovery.1.INTRODUCTIONNowadays, flotation is the most widely used separation process in the mineral processing industry. Coal mining activity is inextricably connected to waste production. These include coal slurries deposited in environment. Current knowledge in the field of mining and especially mineral processing allows extracting valuable fuel from deposit coal slurries. The article discusses of previous works devoted to coal slurries inventory in Jankowice Mine in Poland (Upper Silesia) and quality assessment of coal slurries. 12 samples of coal slurries deposited in waste pond of Jankowice Mine was taken for the investigation. "In the Dongri Buzurg Manganese Mine of M/s Manganese Ore (India) Ltd., high grade lumpy manganese ore required for iron and steel industries is produced through multi-stage crushing and screening. This has resulted in accumulation of 50,000 tonnes of low grade fines over the years. This production of such fines is still going on. The fines create environmental problems, like air and water pollution and siltation in adjoining fields. Besides containing lot of manganese values, they occupy large space which is very scare in mining area.The Indian Bureau of Mines under one of its statutory functions has suggested the company to explore the possibility of recovery of additional values under conservation and environmental aspects. Hence the company has sponsored a bulk sample for beneficiation studies in the Modern Mineral Processing Laboratory and Pilot Plant of Indian Bureau of Mines at Nagpur, India. The main manganese minerals present in these mine rejects have been identified as pyrolusite and psilomelane. The purpose of this study was to explore the possibility of evolving a suitable beneficiation flowsheet to obtain manganese concentrates assaying over 72% MnO2 to be used as raw material for the manufacture of dry cell batteries.The sample/material was subjected to characterisation studies in terms of chemical analysis, granulometry and mineralogical compositions. Based on these characterisation studies, the beneficiation process developed comprised of desliming, jigging and low intensity magnetic separation mainly to reject quartz, silicates and jacobsite. The manganese concentrate thus produced assayed 70.2% MnO2 with MnO2 recovery of 78% and weight per cent yield of 63.5. This natural concentrate could be mixed with the electrolytic manganese dioxide produced by the company and this blend can thus be used as a raw material for the manufacture of dry cell batteries by the end users. The paper deals with the details of test work carried out in evolving the process flowsheet."

Based on detailed theoretical analysis of coarse floatation and three-phase froth, a laboratory system which contains a new type of froth floatation equipment is established. Through water experiment, the relationship among floatation dynamics parameters of the equipment is studied and the best work parameters are educed too. Based on all of above, Slurry test is carried out in a copper concentration plant. Granule between 0.28~0.45mm can be reclaimed successfully. The slurry test proves that to separate coarse minerals in froth floatation equipment is a kind of effective method, it is well worth to make a further study.

For the moment reserves of high-grade ores are practically depleted requiring ever-increased involvement of low assay raw materials, such as black-shale ores, in industrial operations. Black-shale ores are constituted of minerals containing such valuable components as vanadium, uranium, molybdenum, manganese, and rare-earth elements (REE). We studied technogenic solutions of black-shale ores processing, after uranium, molybdenum, and vanadium were recovered. Mentioned solutions contain rare-earth elements in substantial quantities (S REE 70-100 mg/dm3) that is very important factor taking into consideration the world demand ever-increasing last years. Higher concentrations of iron and aluminum inhibiting REE sorption and extraction recovery are found in solutions. We propose a method of hydrolytic deposition to cleaning solutions from impurity elements (Fe, Al). Study of hydrolytic deposition kinetics allowed identifying optimal conditions to run this process. Rare-earth elements may be recovered from purified solutions through sorption process followed by their further deposition from eluates in form of concentrates. "The search for energy efficient technologies for comminution processes is constant in mineral processing studies, since those processes represent a major percentage of operational costs. In this context the use of stirred mills is increasing, especially for ultrafine grinding. Although many authors claim that these new equipment are more efficient than the conventional ball mills, there were very little chances to prove that in a practical way, since there are few industrial circuits where those technologies perform the same duty. Therefore, the regrinding circuit of Germano second concentrator offers an interesting opportunity: a vertical mill operating in parallel with two ball mills. During almost two years of operation, several sampling campaigns were conducted to evaluate the vertical mill performance and to compare the operational data of the three mills. The industrial data was also compared to jar mill tests results, which are monthly conducted in Samarco labs in order to predict the specific energy consumption required by the ore fed to these circuits. The vertical mill demonstrated the same ability to achieve the product specifications of the ball mills while proved to be able to reduce the medium specific energy consumption in about 40%."

MIBC and sodium metasilicate are used as a frother and a dispersant in coal flotation respectively. In order to study interaction between them, flotation experiments were performed on fine coal (<150 microns). It was found that if the frother (MIBC) dosage is in excess of a certain limit, it has an activation effect on the gangue minerals associated with coal. In addition, it was found that however sodium metasilicate can disperse clay slimes eliminating slime coating, but in the case of excess dosage, could intensify activation effect of MIBC, which is undesirable in coal flotation. Deposit of Jinbaoshan platinum group metals (PGMs) ore ranks the second in Yunnan province, China. Study on process mineralogy shows that the grade of copper and nickel in the ore is just 0.16% and 0.20% respectively. Moreover, the impurities magnesium and iron and silicon are rich in the ore. The copper and nickel sulfides in the ore, especially the minerals of PGMs, are finely disseminated with the gangues like serpentine. Fine grinding is necessary, and high content of MgO in the concentrate is inevitable through traditional flotation technology on the basis of process mineralogy studies. Achievements on process mineralogy studies are applied to guide the flotation tests successfully. Progress on flotation has been made through comprehensive studies. Suitable grinding by two stages is required for the finely disseminated PGM sulphide ore to achieve the liberation of valuable minerals. Stage grinding and stage separation shall be conducted for a better recovery of valuable minerals. The oxidation state of mineral surface of sulphides has a profound effect on flotation of the ultra-fine sulphides, especially the pentlandite. The combined use of collectors enhances the selective collecting on the ultra-fine and low-grade valuable minerals, is of critical importance.

The comminution in a high-pressure roller mill is modeled by an energy-based population balance approach considering three aspects of breakage taking place in the active zones of the mill: the interparticle breakage in the high-compression zone, the breakage at the edges of the rolls, and the pre-breakage in the acceleration zone. Together with an appropriate model of classification, this model can be used to simulate steady-state performance of closed-circuit grindings with high-pressure roller mill. After a brief description of the basic modeling approach, the algorithm of the steady-state calculation for a generalized grinding-classification circuit is presented, from which the circuit configurations commonly met in industrial practice can be derived. With an iron ore as feed material for example, simulation results are shown and discussed in respect of circulating load, specific energy consumption and product fineness for closed-circuit grindings under various operating conditions. The effects of stressing intensity, working gap, classifier parameters as well as circuit configuration on the overall circuit performance are investigated systematically by means of computer simulation.

The separation in gravity concentrators is based on the density difference between valuable and gangue minerals. In addition to density, many auxiliary parameters like particle size, shape, feed rate, pulp density etc. plays an important role in the separation. The performance efficiency of gravity units is largely based on the interference of such auxiliary parameters during separation. Many gravity concentrators are used for the beneficiation of cassiterite ores and performance of which are varying with different feed material, particle size and required enrichment from the unit. Selection of gravity units is generally based on laboratory testing and data collected from the previous experience. In the present investigation cassiterite ore collected from Uljin deposit, South Korea has been subjected to various gravity units like jig, spiral, and Knelson concentrator with the intension to pre-concentrate the ore. Second stage concentration was carried out using shaking tables. The article mainly summarizes performance evaluation methods employed for gravity concentrators. Selection of gravity circuit for the beneficiation of cassiterite was made on the basis of the recovery-grade curve, and Tromp curve methods. The paper presents the results of research on the development of gold recovery technology from oxidized gold-copper ore of one of deposits in Russian Federation. Gold and copper grades in the ore are 9.5 g/t and 0.4%, respectively. Various options of flowsheets, such as direct cyanidation, thiourea leaching, flotation and gravity concentration followed by subsequent cyanidation of con-centration products, were tested. It was established that gravity-cyanidation technology with filtra-tion leaching tails and the use of solutions in the recirculation is the optimal option for ore treatment. The proposed flowsheet provides gold recovery for 91.0% at NaCN consumption 2.5 kg/t ac-cording to the results of pilot testing. Ammonia-cyanide gold leaching was also examined. In comparison with cyanidation, gold leaching solution in system NaCN-NH4OH-(NH4)2CO3 allows NaCN consumption to be reduced three times from 4.5 kg to 1.5 kg per 1 ton of the ore and provides the same gold recovery. Based on the laboratory and pilot plant tests results of gravity-cyanidation technology of gold dissolution, process design criteria were developed.
