I would especially like. to welcome delegates who have travelled great distances in order to contribute to, and be participants in, this examination of the technical innovations which have always been a crucial part of our industry.

The estimation of greenhouse gas emissions from coalmines is increasingly becoming a priority for both operators and regulators. At the same time, involved scientific challenges in the methane measurements is generating significant interest from global research community. Various technology providers are also actively engaged in improving their sensors and platforms to address the measurement challenges and capitalise the market opportunities. This presentation highlights rapidly evolving multifaceted landscape of coalmine greenhouse gas emissions. It covers the advances in sensors for the detections, including ground-based, airborne, and satellite-based systems as well as models for the emission estimations, including attempts to reduce the involved uncertainties.

Mobile mining equipment presents only a small portion (ten per cent mining project costs but the selected technology will determine to a large extent the mining performance and mine profitability. The actual performance of the selected mobile equipment technology will rely on the support functions, infrastructure, user interface and user acceptance. Optimising the technology to match the circumstances is an increasingly important phase in a mine feasibility study. Smartly done feasibility studies include the possible future needs of changing or building-up of the selected technology. In massive mining applications the machinery faces quite different challenges than in selective or small-scale mining applications. In massive mining applications the efficient and continuous move of large amounts of material has led to the use of increasing degree of automation. This higher degree of automation in a mining application, on the other hand, will be best applied to a smooth and streamlined mining process and operation. Mining methods like block caving support automated operation. Automated mobile equipment needs supportive infrastructure, monitoring and information transfer systems as well as well established working procedures. Too often the user interface and human factor is disregarded during the consideration of automation. Through the available supplier programming tools it is possible to see how much the selected technology provides flexibility in changing production or economical situations, when major rebuilds or replacements are necessary, and view the effects of all these on the mine economy. When adequate technology is available from various sources, the difference becomes from preparing for the future, managing costs and combining the best layout with the most suitable technological solutions.

A commercial enargite concentrate was mechanically milled in inert and oxidising atmospheres for 10 hours. No substantial effect was observed in either an inert atmosphere or in air other than a broadening and weakening of the diffraction peaks. Milling dry in oxygen or wet in air was dramatic with a significant reaction occurring which formed arsenolite, As2O3 and CuSO4.5H2O, both of which are readily soluble.A small amount of SO2 was also formed. Dissolution in acid left CuS as the major phase implying incomplete oxidation. The small fraction of tennantite in the sample was comparatively resistant to oxidation.

From ancient times to the modern world, the mining industry has played a pivotal role in shaping the society that we live in today. It remains an integral part of everyday life and is a catalyst for both technological and economic growth. With finite resources on Earth, and growing pressures surrounding climate change and the environment, space mining opportunities have become of increasing interest. Recent discoveries have shown celestial bodies including the Moon and surrounding asteroids, contain an abundance of critical minerals, as well as resources necessary to sustain human life. These discoveries coupled with a transition into the digital and autonomous age, offer an innovative solution to solving some of the mining challenges currently being faced on Earth. Similarly, they also offer a pathway to enabling deep space exploration and off Earth exploratory missions. However, like with mining operations on Earth, space remains and immensely challenging and complex operational environment. The inhospitable nature of space poses new challenges, including communication barriers, lunar dust, cosmic radiation, and gravity. The challenges and risks are not just technological, as Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors must also be considered to prevent unintended consequences and hazards. Furthermore, future workforce, law, financial, and security systems must evolve to enable space mining to take place. These are all known aspects to begin with, but as the complexity of the space grows it becomes apparent that a holistic approach to assess and manage these factors will be required.

One of the fundamental requirements for being able to optimise blasting is the ability to predict fragmentation. An accurate blast fragmentation model allows a mine to adjust the fragmentation size for different downstream processes (mill processing versus leach, for instance), and to make real time adjustments in blasting parameters to account for changes in rock mass characteristics (hardness, fracture density, fracture orientation, etc). A number of blast fragmentation models have been developed in the past 40 years such as the Kuz-Ram model (Cunningham, 1983). Fragmentation models have a limited usefulness at the present time because:The input parameters are not the most useful for the engineer to determine and data for these parameters are not available throughout the rock mass. Even if the input parameters are known, the models still do not consistently predict the correct fragmentation. This is because the models capture some but not all of the important rock and blast phenomena. The models do not allow for ætuningÆ at a specific mine site. This paper describes studies that are being conducted to improve blast fragmentation models. The Split image processing software is used for these studies (Kemeny, 1994; Kemeny et al, 1999).

As a result of the explosion in the 512 panel at the Moura No 2 mine in 1994 the role of the ventilation officer (VO) to submit sealing plans (on behalf of the operator/underground mine manager) has become one of the key duties of the VO of an underground coal mine in Australia. The intent of a sealing plan is to document the controls used to manage the build up of flammable concentrations of gases, and for these controls to be reviewed by the industry regulators. These sealing plans have brought a large amount of focus onto the sealing process and served the industry well. The legislation does not define sealing, or when it begins, but throughout the industry typically sealing plans are submitted 30 days prior to the last seal being constructed. This practice appears to have originated from the Moura 512 panel being a standing bord and pillar panel and where the explosive gas mixture could only occur after it was sealed. However, since the Moura disaster the industry has become dominated by goafing style longwall mining. Goafing panels differ from standing bord and pillar panels in that they typically have an unventilated goaf that can potentially contain an explosive mixture from start-up. This was recently highlighted by the explosion and fire on Longwall No 1 Tailgate at the Blakefield South Mine in 2011. The author ponders whether the industry should revisit sealing plans to focus on the core hazard and define that sealing begins when flammable concentrations of gases are created. Although defining when mine sealing begins is the key outcome of this paper, the main point is that VOs and industry regulators need to clearly understand what can occur in the atmosphere of underground coal mines. A trend towards mining more complex and economically marginal orebodies, often combined with increasingly tight product specifications, increases the number of variables which need to be considered in production scheduling. Linear programming incorporating integer constraints can be used to create production schedules which are practical as well as mathematically optimum. Factors which can be taken into account include variability in product stockpiles, targets for head or product grades, production of different material types, production from different areas, production targets for loaders, and dependencies between mining blocks. For each schedule an appropriate objective for optimisation must be chosen. Examples of objectives are: to minimise or maximise grade variation; to minimise waste movement; and to minimise movement by front end loaders. A staged approach to the implementation of computer systems based on linear programming optimisation is Proposed.

The Top End of the Northern Territory lies in the monsoonal zone and receives rain during the November-April period. Initially, at the start of the wet season, rain storms are localised, but, following the descent of the monsoonal trough from below the equator, widespread rain occurs. Overflow incidents at mine sites tend to arise midway through the annual wet season when excess water accumulated in ponds begins to discharge to the external environment. Remote-access monitoring may be undertaken at mine sites using equipment to continuously measure water quality parameters with storage of the information on a data logger. The data is then retrieved by visiting the site and transferring it to a portable computer or by remotely accessing the system using a telemetry system and transmission via telephone, VHF/UHF or satellite. Such systems are readily available and vary in cost depending on the sophistication of the data transfer system. Available sensors for continuous monitoring include those for conductivity, temperature, pH and other ion selective electrodes, eg nitrate, and water level. Of these variables, conductivity is most useful due to its inherent accuracy and stability of reading. Remote monitoring capability is able to provide: (i) more intensive monitoring of key issues; (ii) more timely information; (iii) correct perspective on the degree of environmental problem; and (iv) information from remote locations, which would be difficult to monitor by more conventional methods. Examples are given for applications of continuously logged measurement of conductivity of waters discharging to drains and in creeks at Pine Creek, Ranger, Nabarlek and Woodcutters mines in the Northern Territory. These applications demonstrate the timeliness of the continuous monitoring technique.

When dealing with rocks in the geotechnical profession, a common activity involves providing an estimate of the intact strength. The tactile approach and descriptions of strength that apply to soils is well documented, can be readily checked through the use of a pocket penetrometer and are known to provide reliable estimates of strength. Moreover, although different soil strength classification systems are present, the bounds between classification classes are compatible across almost all documented classification systems. However, this is not the case for rock strength materials. There are numerous systems within the literature, some with different concepts, and almost all have different bounds to each strength classification. In this paper, the author presents seven classification systems for estimating intact rock strength and highlights issues in their implementation. Mine soils are often organic matter and carbon poor due to disturbance, topsoil stockpiling and mixing with spoil. They present an opportunity to observe the accumulation of soil carbon arising from rehabilitation or ‘green carbon’ through organic matter inputs and may be considered for carbon credits. Soil carbon is known to improve multiple soil characteristics and is viewed as an indicator of soil health.When attempting to estimate soil carbon levels in the Australian coal mining regions, both coal and black carbon (BC) need to be quantified. Coalmine soils contain coal particles that are difficult to distinguish from organic matter using standard carbon analyses. BC, a material arising from the incomplete combustion of organic matter and fossil fuels, displays some similar characteristics to coal and is ubiquitous in Australian soils due to bushfires. The presence of coal and BC complicate the determination of green carbon levels in mine soils.A method to quantify coal and BC in mine soils from the Bowen Basin using thermal analysis and multivariate curve resolution is presented. By determining BC and coal contributions it is then possible to calculate green carbon levels in rehabilitated mine soils. The seismic velocities of intact rock are dependent on the applied stress. Unfortunately, the low susceptibility of seismic velocity to stress changes mean that changes in seismic velocity have to be measured extremely accurately to infer stress changes from them. Previously, it was thought that measurements of this accuracy could only be made with active sources or repeating earthquakes. In this paper, we show that the noise generated by mining activity can be used to construct virtual seismic signals with which we can measure changes in seismic velocity accurately enough to see the short- and long-term effects of a production blast on the surrounding medium. The time-dependent velocity variations achieved with this method show that the blast caused weakening of the rock mass for the rock within a radius of 200 m of the blast. The weakening is healed by confining stresses over a period of five days, after which permanent changes in the seismic velocity can be seen. The size and spatial distribution of the seismic velocity changes were compared to modelled changes in static volumetric stress, which supported the notion that seismic velocity changes can be used to measure the redistribution of stress after a blast. The results of this study indicate that this method can be a powerful tool to evaluate the evolution of stress in a mine at a relatively low cost as the data that it uses would normally be discarded.CITATION:Olivier, G, Lynch, R A and Brenguier, F, 2016. Olympic Dam Operation is located in the Stuart Shelf Geological Province approximately 520 km north-north-west of Adelaide in South Australia. It is estimated to be one of the worldÆs top five copper orebodies by size and the biggest single occurrence of uranium. The deposit was discovered by Western Mining Corporation in 1975. Exploration was based on a conceptual model for the formation of sediment hosted copper deposits together with gravity and magnetic anomalies.The capital cost of the current expansion is estimated to be A$ 1.64 billion. The underground expansion includes a total of 36 km of lateral development, a railway haulage system delivering ore from a series of ore passes to a new crusher station and a significant increase in ventilation capacity and mine services.In the current underground expansion the mining method will essentially remain unchanged. The ore handling system will incorporate some recent advances in technology, improving efficiency and safety standards.Major infrastructure excavations are designed by a team of engineers attached to the Olympic Dam Expansion Project and a number of consulting groups. Once the expansion is fully completed it is expected to increase the current annual underground production level from 3.4 Mt to 9.0 Mt of ore by the year 2000. Mine design engineers working for the Olympic Dam Operation have recently completed a three year final design plan to achieve this target.Access to the existing mine is through the decline and Whenan shaft. The Whenan shaft was originally sunk as an exploration access and later upgraded for hoisting. The 4 km long service decline connecting to the Whenan shaft was later constructed to accommodate the increase in service demand. The Robinson and Sir Lindsay Clark shafts were developed at later stages to cater for the hoisting during and following the expansion lead up.

The optimisation and process developments surrounding the beneficiation of Cu-Ni-PGM ores is of fundamental importance when considering the continued rise in global demand for these precious metals. The selective sequential flotation of these ores is accompanied with various processing challenges such as the successful separation of the Cu-Ni-PGMs from non-sulfide naturally floatable gangue and pyrrhotite. Reagents such as sodium iso-butyl xanthate (SIBX) and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) have proven to significantly improve the selectivity of the flotation process in their respective roles. The use of recycled water with abnormal inorganic electrolyte concentrations can modify the selectivity of these reagents, as ions may adsorb onto minerals such as pyrrhotite, thereby hindering or promoting the hydrophocity and floatability of pyrrhotite. Process water quality effects on the behaviour of pyrrhotite may have negative or positive influence on the recovery and grades of the wanted Cu-Ni-PGMs as valuable minerals associated with pyrrhotite such as pentlandite may be affected in like manner. Thus, the impact of concentrator process water quality on the behaviour of pyrrhotite needs to be determined. In this study synthetic process water at various ionic strengths was investigated against various CMC dosages to understand the behaviour of pyrrhotite during the flotation of a Cu-Ni-PGM Merensky ore in a batch flotation cell. This study showed that pyrrhotite grades increased with an increase in CMC dosage for fixed ionic strengths whereas the recoveries of pyrrhotite increased with an increase in ionic strength until 3SPW, then a trend of a decrease in recoveries was seen with 5SPW resulting in the lowest pyrrhotite recoveries. Furthermore, this study showed that moderate CMC dosages of 100 g/t resulted in the highest pyrrhotite recovery for all four ionic strengths of synthetic process water tested. It can be said that to maximise value recovery from Cu-Ni-PGM ores, understanding the behaviour of pyrrhotite against degrading water quality and reagent suites could be of paramount importance given the sensitivity of pyrrhotite to oxidising chemical conditions.

The impact of seismic loading on open pit slope stability in Australia is often only considered where the slopes are located adjacent to tailings facilities or other major infrastructure. The debate regarding application of seismic loading in open pit design in Australia is usually founded on limited reporting on significant damage of open pit operations during earthquakes, the common perception that earthquakes do not occur in Australia or that they are unlikely to occur during the mine life of the mine. It is frequently overlooked that pit slopes that have withstood strong earthquakes in highly active seismic regions are often designed under strict seismic guidelines. This paper discusses the factors that impact earthquake performance of open mine slopes. These factors include topography, slope geometry, rock material and mass properties, water management and intrinsic pit design. Further, the paper presents insights into the characteristics of earthquake activity in Australia such as magnitude distribution, earthquake depths, areas prone of earthquake activity and general seismic hazard that are relevant to pit design. Guidelines are provided on the conditions and circumstances under which earthquake design in open pit mining should be considered. In addition, this paper provides recommendation on the applicable methods for assessment of the impacts of earthquake loading on pit slope stability.

Ti-added ultra-low carbon (ULC) steel is produced by adding Al and Ti during the secondary refining process to deoxidise molten steel and to bind C and N which are detrimental to the deep drawing quality of the steel product. However, the production of Ti-added ULC steel faces challenges, including submerged entry nozzle clogging and surface defects on cold rolled coils. The troubles were often attributed to ‘Al-Ti complex inclusions’ in the molten steel. However, the evolution of oxide inclusions including their stability has been still unclear. In the present study, the evolution of these inclusions in Ti-added ULC steel was investigated by phase diagram measurement, CALPHAD thermodynamic modelling, high-temperature stability test for the oxides, and observation of transient behaviour of oxide inclusions in the steel. The phase diagram of the Al-Ti-O system was elucidated with an emphasis on oxygen potential, which significantly controls the stability of the oxides. CALPHAD thermodynamic models and a self-consistent database were developed. The transient behaviour of Al-Ti complex inclusions in Ti-added ULC steel was observed in situ using a confocal scanning laser microscope. This was additionally validated by the new thermodynamic model. The equilibrium phases of the oxide inclusions were investigated using a high-temperature resistance furnace, and were analysed using a secondary electron microscope, energy dispersive spectrometer, and electron back-scattered diffraction. By considering the morphology and crystal structure of these inclusions, the evolution of Al-Ti oxide inclusions was elucidated. Various behaviour of Al-Ti inclusions and their influence on steel cleanliness are discussed.

Management of environmental issues is an integral part of the mine decommissioning process. In Queensland, miners must comply with environmental aspects of the Mineral Resources Act and Contaminated Land legislation. Successful decommissioning involves the integration of a final Plan of Operations, decommissioning report addressing the mineÆs commitments included in its Environmental Management Overview Strategy (EMOS), and Site Contamination Report for relinquishment of leases under the Contaminated Land Act (1991). Niugini MiningÆs Red Dome Mine is proceeding through the decommissioning process. This paper discusses the important environmental management issues including sampling programs, management of culturally significant areas, assessment of background concentrations of target analytes, the use of historical reviews and risk assessment techniques, the timing of works, and the remediation/management of large areas of impacted land. The importance of a clear communications plan between key stakeholders is also discussed.

Geochemical assessment of mine waste materials prior to commencement of a proposed mining operation is a fundamental component of mine feasibility studies and the regulatory approvals process. Static and kinetic geochemical test methodologies are widely used to predict the geochemical nature of mine waste materials and to develop strategies for managing potentially æhostileÆ materials. These data can also be integrated with data from other fundamental studies such as hydrogeology to predict specific environmental outcomes and potential impacts at mine closure and post-closure.A case study is presented for a proposed open pit gold mine in Mongolia, which illustrates how geochemical, hydrogeological and groundwater quality data can be used as part of a geochemical modelling process to predict the final pit lake water quality over time. A series of static and kinetic test geochemical test programs were completed and acquired data integrated with hydrogeological and groundwater quality data provided by the proponent. A widely used geochemical modelling program (PHREEQC) was used to develop the geochemical model and predict water chemistry in the pit void after mine closure. Sensitivity analyses were completed to explore the effects on the model output of groundwater to leachate water ratio, pit wall rock type and climate.Modelling has indicated that pit void water should be pH circum-neutral at mine closure and should remain within Mongolian and World Bank water quality guideline limits under the modelled simulation most likely to occur in the field. Final void water salinity is expected to increase eight fold over 14 years after end of mine life due to a continuous flux of salts (particularly sulfate salts) into the pit lake whilst the pit lake volume will remain relatively constant due to evaporation and a slow recharge rate. Dissolved metal and sulfate salt concentrations in pit water are also predicted to increase over time and could be moderately elevated compared to applied water quality guideline values. Some of the metal concentrations, however, may be lower as these would be expected to precipitate at circum-neutral pH and greater. Recommended additional assessment work on the project when mining commences includes determining the magnitude of adsorption and co-precipitation of metals occurring in the pit void water/sludge system.CITATION:Robertson, A, Rait, R and Swane, I, 2013.
