Eleven years ago I addressed delegates to the Whyalla Meeting of this Institute on the subjects 'Oil in Australia?' -- a title which was followed by a large question mark.My purpose at that time, which was before Rough Range, was to interest members of this Institute in the possibility of oil in this country because I considered that exploration for mineralwealth was our concern.I doubt if I made much impression.but.I recall that the Chairman at that Meeting, Mr Ian McLennan, asked me pointedly to name the areas I-would select and I nominated the Northwest of Western Australia,'Gippsland and the Roma District

Three-dimensional DEM (Distinct Element Method) simulations were conducted in order to examine the performance of screw conveyors, which are installed to transport bulk materials as parts of many industrial machines, including mining and construction machinery. To apply the DEM to the analysis of screw conveyors, we added a spiral object and cylinder objects, which correspond to the helical screw, the casing pipe, and the driving shaft of a screw conveyor. These objects are represented analytically to enhance the precision and efficiency when calculating the interaction between objects and particles. Simulations were conducted for some real applications: inclined and other types of screws, as well as the basic types (horizontal and vertical). Results were compared with previous work and empirical equations. It is concluded that this method is sufficiently well-developed and useful to analyse various kinds of screw conveyors.

Coal mines are dynamic systems that change continually in size, shape, and condition. Large quantities of data about production, coal quality, ground stability, ventilation monitoring, equipment performance and location, vehicle and personnel movements and geology, are generated from all parts of the mine.Internet technology and virtual reality technology are now being combined to provide an intuitive, multi-dimensional information system which can simultaneously display any information that can be collected and stored by a computer. Physical information is directly displayed as 3-dimensional objects in the mine model. Numerical and text information is dynamically linked to these objects and accessed by "clicking" on them.

In 1976, The Zinc Corporation Limited Broken Hill set up a plant to re-process a hill of tailing (Mt. Keast) from the original treatment operations. With the likely disappearance of this source of feed in 1985, an investigation was initiated to determine what other feed sources might be available. This involved searching through old records and photographs as well as a subsequent drilling campaign. The paper briefly covers the history of treatment operations and describes, as a result of the information obtained, the likely future sources of feed.

LKAB is a mining company situated in northern Scandinavia, manufacturing blast furnace- and direct-reduction pellets and sinter fines. Pellet development at LKAB comprises testing at laboratory and pilot scale. The LKAB Experimental Blast Furnace (EBF) is a unique test facility and an important tool in terms of product development and process research. For a better understanding of pellet behaviour in the blast furnace process, LKAB has started to use automated mineralogy for the characterisation and quantification of its iron ore products and pellets. A mineralogical evaluation of iron ore olivine pellets, taken from a test campaign in the EBF, has been performed. The studied materials were samples from excavated pellet layers through the entire EBF at different positions. A large number of iron ore pellets was analysed using a combination of automated mineralogy, using QEMSCAN«, and chemical analysis. Important information about the performance of pellets in the blast furnace process, such as a quantitative description of mineral and iron oxide alterations at different temperatures, Fe-reduction and alkali deposition, was obtained.

The Hedong Gold Mine is located in the Yan(ai area, tihandong hroo%ill, e. China. It is an underground mine with an annual gold output of some 700 0(H) grams. The orebody is located on the edge of the Wanger Shan metamorphism zone, and the hangingwall of orebodies is thus defined by a prominent set of fractures. The proximity of the metamorphism zone and the inclusion of the fracture set ensure that both the orebody and the country rocks are unstable. The main orebodies dip at an angle of between 40 to 45¦, with a strike length of 160 metres and a horizontal width of 50 metres. Surface subsidence in the area is not permitted. Cut and fill mining is usually practiced. As the mining operation proceeds to greater depths, the ore grade is diminishing and it is necessary to find a more efficient stoping method. Sublevel open stoping with sequential extraction and filling of each sublevel has been designed and applied in situ. This new mining method is called 'sublevel open and fill stoping method' in the mine. Experience to-date is that new mining method is Satisfactory.

A simple method of designing effective fill drainage systems for slurry backfill is presented. By using the proposed method, it is easy to calculate and predict the expected fill drainage rates or to provide additional drainage systems to accelerate the fill drainage. The fundamentals of hydraulic fill and an efficient method to determine its permeability is also explained. The safety in hydraulic filling and bulkhead stability depends totally on achieving effective drainage regime for the fill. This paper provides the basis for creating such efficient drainage regimes. The recent fatal fill bulkhead failures in Australia were the result of poor drainage from the respective fill masses, and therefore it is more important to provide suitable drainage arrangements to continue using hydraulic fill to the benefit of the mining industry. At present there is no procedure available to mine operators to estimate the expected bulkhead pressures to design a satisfactory bulkhead. Some mines are constructing bulkheads after their initial investigations carried out years ago. Other mines have simply borrowed the ideas from the pioneer mines and using in their areas. It is high time that we develop a rational approach to estimate the expected bulkhead pressures for the design of bulkheads. We need a simple model that could be understood and used by the mine operators on a day-to-day basis. This paper also presents a model to predict the bulkhead pressures for designing safe bulkheads.

At the LKAB, Iron Ore Mine, Kiruna, Sweden a preliminary investigation into the reliability characteristics of a fleet of load-haul-dump machines has shown that the hydraulic system is one of the most critical parts. Therefore, hydraulic system was selected for study and analysis through condition monitoring devices so that failure can be controlled or at least the failure consequences can be minimized.The hydraulic system has two different problems; one is that the contamination level is too high and the other is high temperature during operation. At high temperature, seals and tubes are a problem, because they stiffen due to carbonization, which leads to increasing leakage. The pumps and restrictions were responsible for the main temperature increase.

Lithocaps are potentially voluminous zones of advanced argillic and associated argillic alteration located above the subvolcanic intrusive environment. They constitute exploration objectives for epithermal and porphyry-type deposits. High-sulphidation epithermal deposits may be sought within lithocaps, whereas low-sulphidation deposits may exist on their edges. Porphyry Cu-Au/Au deposits may be accessible beneath lithocaps if systems are telescoped sufficiently. Oxidation of the basal, pyritic parts of lithocaps may promote supergene sulphide enrichment under appropriate tectonic and climatic conditions.

The anodic dissolution of iron from three different Western Australian reduced ilmenites was investigated using the carbon paste electrode technique. A characteristic current-potential diagram, called a cyclic voltammogram (CV), was obtained for each of the reduced ilmenites. The shape of the CV measured for all three reduced ilmenites was strongly time dependent. The effect of electrolyte composition and temperature on the CV of one reduced ilmenite was also investigated. The results suggest that the initial surface of iron in reduced ilmenite is slow to dissolve and that chloride ions and higher temperatures accelerate the dissolution of this initial surface layer. However, after removal of this layer, the dissolution rate was essentially independent of the electrolyte composition and the temperature.

Goonyella-Riverside mine is an open cut coal mine in Central Queensland. One component of the mining operations at this site is an uncompacted spoil dump some 50 m above the natural ground surface and over 300 ha in extent formed as a result of bucket wheel excavator operations. Plateau area slopes are 0.5¦ to 1.5¦ with irregular outer dump slopes of 9.5¦ - 17¦Investigation was undertaken and a series of trials planned to assess the suitability of a variety of stabilisation proposals to meet the client's requirements and to conform with Department of Resource Industrystabilisation guidelines.

The general level of awareness amongst members of the professions that they are faced with an increasing number of claims for breaches of their professional duty was dramatically heightened by the decision of Rogers J. at first instance in Cambridge Credit Corporation v Hutcheson (1985) 3 ACLR when the auditors of the failed company were found liable for breach of contract and faced a damages award of $145 million - well in excess of their insurance cover. No comfort should be found in the fact that this decision was overturned on appeal, for that result rested on the issue of whether there had been a causal connection between the breach of contract which had occurred and the loss suffered rather than on the fundamental principle of auditors' liability.

Optical microscopy is a basic but still indispensable tool for examining mineral parageneses in ores. The design and concepts behind the reflected light ore microscope have obviously not been subject to spectacular technical evolutions in the last decades. However, digital imaging capabilities have opened new and stimulating perspectives for automated mineral identification. Recent works in developing multispectral image analysis (Pirard, 2004) have demonstrated its superior potential with respect to conventional colour imaging, but at the same time reconciliation with spectroscopic databases such as the Quantitative Data File III (Criddle and Stanley, 1993) still needs a more in-depth investigation as well as the possibility to extend both imaging and spectroscopy into the near infrared domain. In this paper, the authors present results gained from multispectral imaging in the range between 400 and 1000 nm together with spectrophotometric data from the QDFIII database, with an emphasis on minerals that cannot be easily distinguished in the visible spectrum.

The highland region of Papua-New Guinea is relatively rugged terrain where stream gradients are steep. In areas where porphyry copper deposits outcrop the streams commonly expose primary sulphide mineralization in unoxidized rocks. Stream sediment geochemistry combined with float examination and broad geological mapping proved to be an effective tool for detection of outcropping bodies of mineralization. After discovery, detailed stream sediment sampling, soil sampling and rock chip sampling, together with detailed geological mapping proved adequate to delineate drilling targets. Reconnaissance stream sediment sample density was dictated by geology and access and a density of one sample per 25 Km2, or less, was desirable to ensure a high degree of confidence in the programme. Research indicated that the base metals occur in sulphide form in stream sediment and that the -80 mesh size fraction gave the most reliable results. A case-study is presented of the tailings dam of Nairne Pyrites Pty. Ltd., at Brukunga, South Australia. The methods of-construction and operation of the dam are outlined over the whole working life of the mine. Procedures of soil mechanics used to estimate the stability 'of the face of the dam are described, and seepage problems are dis- cussed. It is concluded that the dam is basically stable, and enabled Nairne Pyrites Pty. Ltd. to dispose of tailings economically, although more attention to seepage control may have been ad- vantageous. Suggestions are made on the construction and operation of tailings dams elsewhere.

Several styles of copper (Cu) mineralisation are present at Sepon. Large tonnage, low grade skarn and carbonate replacement massive sulfide mineralisation occur within the metamorphic aureole of Permian-aged rhyodacite porphyry intrusions (RDPs). During exhumation and supergene weathering, this primary mineralisation has been upgraded to form high-grade chalcocite enriched zones up to 50 m thick, which comprises the bulk of Cu resources currently being mined at Sepon. Groundwaters remobilise Cu to form exotic accumulations of malachite that are locally hosted in irregular karsts in carbonate rocks, found up to 1000 m from source mineralisation. Khanong is the largest Cu deposit and recent discoveries have been made at Thengkham South, Thengkham North and Phabing. All deposits have formed by similar processes of mineralisation. However, all differ due to local variations in host rock lithology, structural setting, and hydrological conditions. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. Underground coal gasification (UCG) is a promising process for obtai- ning energy from coal, which is either unmineable with current mining techno- logy or uneconomic to recover, using conventional methods, in the present energy market situation. There are several coal fields, which could become new coal reserves, if the UCG process were successfully applied. In the 1960's Japanese researchers made a number of basic studies and field tests into UCG, although not all of them produced favourable results. This paper reviews Japanese research on UCG. This includs basic studies into coal gasification using a small, tube reactor fed by air and oxygen, and also large scale model stu- dies(reactor size of 8.Om x 2.4m x 1.5 m). Field test results from Akabira colliery in Hokkaido and a feasibility study of power generation using UCG from a coal field in Hokkaido are also Presented.
