If the tonnage of merchantable iron ore remaining in the Lake Superior district is divided by the average of the annual shipments for the past 20 years, it will be found that this ore supply will be exhausted in approximately 35 years. This computed exhaustion period would be an indication of the future activities of the iron-mining industry if it were not for the fact that merchantable ore is being manufactured from low-grade ore, of which there is an almost inexhaustible supply in the Lake Superior district. It is true that at present only the simplest of these low-grade ores are being concentrated to any considerable extent, but progress is being made with the treatment of the more complex ores, and now, in addition to 20 washing plants on the Mesabi Range, three plants are equipped with jigs for the treatment of ore that cannot be concentrated simply by washing. The latest addition to the ore-treating plants of the Mesabi Range is a magnetic roasting and concentration plant at Cooley, Minn., in which ore that cannot be concentrated either by washing or by jigging is roasted to the magnetic state and concentrated on magnetic separators. This plant is beginning its third season of operation, and while it is too soon to make definite predictions, there are strong indications that this new process may make commercially possible the manufacture of high-grade, merchantable iron ore from large quantities of low-grade ore now considered worthless. After the iron oxide contained in an ore has been converted to magnetite, almost any desired grade of concentrate can be produced, using magnetic-concentration equipment of the types now in general use for the concentration of the natural magnetites of New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The conversion of hematite (Fe203) to magnetite (Fe3O4) is easily accomplished by heating the ore to a dull red temperature in a reducing atmosphere. The reaction is slightly endothermic, and while it requires 200 B.t.u. to heat to 900' F. one pound of hematite ore containing 45 per cent Fe, it requires only 100 B.t.u. to convert the oxide into magnetite. IN a discussion in the Transactions of the Institute (vol. xl, page 835 et seq.) the writer gave some data about explosions of gas and dust in the coal mines of the United States, Canada, and Mexico, among which was a table showing all explosions in the countries mentioned, in which five or more fatalities occurred, which had been reported from Oct. 2, 1871, to Mar. 28, 1908. Since the elate of publication of this discussion, as opportunity has presented, this table has been extended by the addition of explosions occurring since that time, by including several explosions which occurred prior to 1871, and by adding to the list all explosions of gas or dust in which less than five fatalities occurred, this having been clone by a search through the various mine reports, partly by the author and partly by the Librarian of the United Engineering Societies, and by correspondence with mine inspection officials of the various States, to all of whom acknowledgment of assistance is made: The accompanying list, Table I, is believed to be as nearly correct as such a statement can be made, and, while only extending to Dec. 20, 1912, contains all of the data now available in reports. An analysis of Table I, showing the occurrence by months of all explosions of gas or dust, including those in which less as well as those in which more than five fatalities occurred, is given in Table II. The statements are frequently made, in technical papers, that the number of explosions, particularly the larger ones, is increasing more rapidly than the number of mines, and that the number of fatalities caused by mine explosions, particularly the more disastrous ones, is increasing faster, proportionally, than the production of coal. To investigate the correctness of these statements Table III was prepared, in which the number of accidents and fatalities is taken from Table I, using those in the United States only, on account of lack of other data for Canada and Mexico; the production is from the records of the U.S. Geological Survey, and the number of mines, from 1909, from the same source; previous to 1909, the number of mines, for the decennial periods, was furnished by the U. S. Census records.

WITHIN the last three years, aerial mapping has made wonderful progress. Its three sources of development in North America may be enumerated as follows: (1) The work of the U. S. Army Air. Service and Corps of Engineers at the McCook Experimental Field, Dayton, Ohio. This is generally regarded as the backbone of this class of endeavor in the United States. (2) In Canada, a great deal has been accomplished in a practical way by methods that have not even been tried out in the United States. Under the leadership of the late Doctor Deville, the Dominion Land Surveyors have turned out reconnaissance maps of large areas at very, small cost. (3) Private capital has contributed a great deal toward development of aerial mapping in a practical way in the United States. Prominent in this regard stands the Fairchild Aerial Surveys, Inc. which has spent large sums in research and development work, especially in the construction of aerial cameras. Its camera is, at present, the official camera of the U. S. Army and Navy Air Services, also, of the Canadian and Brazilian governments. Aerial photographic surveying is a flexible process and adapted to a variety of uses. To date, it has proved. of direct practical value for engineering projects such as reservoir and power transmission surveys, railroad location, drainage, harbor front studies; also, for many commercial purposes, tax assessment, city planning, forest surveys, and lawsuits. In a few instances, aerial photographs have been used successfully by geologists as base maps on which to record field observations, thereby dispensing with pacing and compass surveys. There is reason to believe that, eventually, the aerial map will find wide application in the work of geologists. The reason for advancing this opinion is that aerial maps have, in other fields, proved more complete as regards detail than maps made by standard processes of surveying and drafting, and often are more accurate than the latter. At the present time, five distinct uses are being made of aerial photographs: There is the "oblique" photograph taken at an angle with the horizon; it is used extensively for illustrations in newspapers, magazines, and advertisements. Also, for reconnaissance purposes, it has been found of great practical value. For illustrating reports of engineers and geologists, it offers many obvious advantages. In the Canadian Surveys, maps have been compiled from oblique photographs.

THIS paper presents the results of a study of the relationship of the electrokinetic or zeta potential to flotation phenomena. The relationship is established on the experimental evidence that mineral behavior in flotation and in cataphoresis is generally governed by the chemical properties and amount of the reagents adsorbed at mineral surfaces. Cataphoresis1-5 or electrophoresis is the name given to the movement of a charged particle in a liquid medium under the influence of an applied electric field. Mineral behavior in cataphoresis, as indicated by the magnitude and sign of its ionic charge, can be represented by the term zeta potential. In this paper, the zeta potential represents the difference in potential between the immovable liquid layer attached to the surface of a solid particle and the movable liquid layer in the body of the liquid, and is the result of the tendency of ions on the surface of the particle and within the liquid boundary layer to establish a condition of equilibrium. A high positive zeta potential means that the mineral surface is dominated by cations, a high negative zeta potential indicates domination by anions, and a low zeta potential indicates that the surface is influenced almost equally by cations and anions. In terms of observed quantities the zeta potential is given by the relation [z = 47ruu(300)$ Kx] in which z is the zeta potential expressed in in volts, u the viscosity of the solution in poises, u the velocity of particles in centimeters per second, x the impressed potential gradient in volts per centimeter, and k the dielectric constant of the solution in c.g.s. units. A convenient source for the derivation of the equation is the book by Thomas,6 The term zeta coefficient is an expression coined to denote the difference between the magnitude of the zeta potential of a mineral suspended in solution A, and that of the same mineral suspended in solution B, which consists of solution A and an additional chemical agent, but is at the same pH. For example, the difference between the zeta potential of galena particles in distilled water and that in any chemical solution at the same pH is a zeta coefficient. Union Carbide began looking seriously at heap leaching in 1971. At that time some 1.6 million tons of mineral averaging 0.40 kg U3O8 /t) (0.80 lb U3O8) were stockpiled at various sites around the Gas Hills, Wyoming, uranium facility. Several alternatives for economically exploiting these reserves were considered and heap leaching seemed the most attractive. At the time, Western Nuclear Inc. was operating a heap leaching project nearby in which the low-grade ore was leached with sulfuric acid, the product liquor treated in an on site solvent extraction circuit, and the stripped product liquor re-acidified and recycled. The operators were most generous in allowing us to visit their site and in answering our questions. They were also helpful in discussing the problems associated with heap leaching. Their experience confirmed our belief that it was possible to operate a heap leach profitably on material too low grade for conventional milling. Based largely on what we had learned from Western Nuclear's experience, we undertook a program involving a laboratory study to determine the characteristics of the mineral stockpiles, as related to heap leaching, and to conduct a pilot heap leach adjoining our Gas Hill mill. Basically the pilot heap construction and leach procedure were similar to those described in the literature l, 2 with certain modifications to permit detailed monitoring of the operation. In May 1972, the decision was made to construct a test heap. The UCC plant at Gas Hills, Wyoming was selected as the most appropriate site for the following reasons: (1) The necessary equipment for heap construction was readily available. (2) Stockpiles of mineral from the various mining sites were on hand: (3) Construction of the heap could be made on an abandoned tailings pile minimizing problems associated with environmental approval. (4) Proximity of the mill would allow product streams to be absorbed into existing circuits. (5) Necessary utilities were available. (6) Tailings water from the existing circuit could be used for leaching. A program for the pilot heap leach was developed with the following primary objectives. (1) To confirm the data obtained in bench-scale tests particularly on uranium recovery, acid usage, and ore permeability. (2) To evaluate plastic liners used for base preparation. (3) To investigate heap configuration variables. (4) To determine heap leach amenability of the different mineral sources. (5) To establish the economics of heap leaching low-grade ores.

Sharp declines of initial production of both oil and gas occurred in West Virginia during 1943. There was only a small decrease in the number of ncw wells, but these wells did not show the quantities of oil and gas that might have been expected. The same situation prevailed both as to routine drilling in old pools and as to exploratory wildcat wells. Out of 42 wildcats drilled, 19 resulted in small commercial gas wells, and 2 in small commercial oil. No new oil pools were discovered, but the proved limits of several old pools were considerably extended, giving 4200 acres of newly proved oil territory. Three new gas pools, resulting from discoveries made in 1942 and former years, came into definite activity. The newly proved gas territory in these and in various extensions of old pools is 39,000 acres or more. It is doubtful whether the newly proved reserves of either oil or gas will balance current withdrawals. The account of operations, as gathered from trade journals and other reporting services, shows that 696 new wells were drilled, resulting in 82 oil wells with 919 bbl. of daily new production; 475 gas wells with 454,735,000 cu. ft. of daily open flow, and 137 dry holes. Also, 57 old wells were drilled to deeper sands, with 3 bbl. and 11,484,000 cu. it. of added production. On the new wells, the oil average was 11.2 bbl. per well per day, and the gas average was 957,337 cu. ft. per well per day. On new wells the ratio of dry holes to completions was 19.68 per cent. On deeper drilling the ratio of failures was 14.03 per cent. The greatly decreased average initial gas-well production in 1943, as compared with 2,270,406 CU. ft. per well in 1942, is directly attributable to the abrupt decline of completions in the Charleston gas field, which reached its peak in 1942. Production of oil for the year was estimated by the U. S. Rureau of Mines as 3,349,000 bbl., as compared with 3,574,000 bbl. in 1942. Production of natural gas for the year is estimated by the author as 210,000, 000,000 cu. ft., compared with the U. S. Bureau of Mines final figures of 215,193,-000,000 cu. ft.* in 1942.

The rates of nucleation and growth at various temperatures in U-0.45, 1.1, and 1.35 at. pet Cr alloys were determined, providing a qliantitative proo-f that the transformation under study is controlled by nucleation and diffusional growth. The linear relationship, log NV US 1/T2, suggests that the nucleation of the alloys is probably controlled by the classical law of nuclei formation. The established linear relationship, log G us 1/T, in the three alloys suggests that growth in each alloy is controlled by bidimensional nuclei formation. It was established that both the rate of growth and the rale of nucleation are retarded by chromium. Using classical formulae, sApN and sApG (the ß/a apparent interphase energies) were calculated from the nucleation and growth results, respectively. It was found that their values are of the same order of magnitude. However, why sApN is unaffected by the addition of chromium, while sApG increases with it, needs further clarification. In the last few years, an appreciable amount of research has been conducted into the mechanism of the ß —a transformation in uranium and uranium alloys. Recently, Burke1 reviewed the published work concerned with this transformation. He concluded that in dilute uranium alloys it is firmly established that, at high temperatures in the a range, ß decomposes by a diffusional process. However, he based his conclusion either on experiments dealing with the over-all transformation,2 or on qualitative results.3 It was felt that a better insight into the mechanism of transformation could be gained from the quantitative measurements of growth and nucleation rates, which we aimed to carry out in the present work. In a previous work,4 we have shown that a rim of a grains is formed during isothermal transformation at the high a range. The thickening of this rim with time was used for measuring the rate of growth in U-0.45 at. pet Cr.5 This method was also used in the present work for two more alloys. For meas- uring the rate of nucleation, a method of quenching and macroetching was developed to allow differentiation between a grains formed during isothermal transformation at the upper a range and those formed after quenching, Fig. 1. Pa.-Undoubtedly there is a serious problem through the juxtaposition of gas and oil wells and coal mines, not only at the present time, but possibly of far more serious import for the future. If one examines a map of the coal fields on which is superposed the oil and gas fields of the country, one finds that they overlap to a very great extent. I may say at the beginning that we have not, so far as I know, had any very large number, of accidents growing out of this situation causing loss of life. Such accidents, or rather incidents, that have occurred have all been rather potential possibilities for disasters due to the leakage of gas from wells into the adjacent coal mines. The condition has been most acute in the Fairmont district of West Virginia, and in the general coal fields southwest of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania. The accidents which have actually occurred were summarized in Bulletin No. 65 (Oil and Gas Wells through Workable Coal Beds) issued by the U. S. Bureau of Mines, reporting the transactions of several meetings in Pittsburgh, February, 1913, of oil and gas well representives, State geologists, State mine inspectors, coal-mine operators, and representatives of the U. S. Bureau of Mines. This conference was partly brought about through a case in which the Pennsylvania State inspection department had brought suit to restrain a gas company from completing a well through a certain mine. The office of the Attorney General of Pennsylvania asked the opinion of the Bureau of Mines upon the matter; about the same time the Association of State Geologists, at its New Haven meeting, asked the Bureau to take up the problem. Accordingly, it was thought advisable to bring together the several, interests. In attempting to assess the contributions of Antoine Gaudin to the profession which he illuminated for almost a half-century, we will need to examine a very broad canvas. He was active in three significant areas: as a teacher; in research, both through his own endeavors and those of his students; and as a consultant to the mining industry and to the Government. Beyond these specific contributions, there was the major personal influence he had on scores of students, friends, and colleagues in the profession. If a single measure of the man's contribution is to be found, it will be the extent and direction in which he influenced the practice of his profession. To find this we should examine the state of miner- al processing when he began his activities in the 19201s, the progress which has taken place over the past half-century, and the part his activities played in this advance. However, there is a provocative and broader examination which I have chosen to make instead. This is to examine the past century in mineral processing through the lives of three men who, by common agreement, stand on the heights, both in teaching and in their contributions to industry: Robert H. Richards, Arthur F. Taggart, and the man whose memory we honor this evening, Antoine M. Gaudin. Their careers, by coincidence, cover just a century. This is also AIME's first century, and the first century of mineral industry education in the United States. In fact, mineral processing itself on any significant scale in the country encompasses only a century and a quarter. BEGINNINGS OF PRACTICE IN THE U.S. Before the 1840’s, U.S. mining, except for coal and iron ore, was on a small scale and was confined to the eastern states, with processing practically nonexistent. The 1840's saw the beginning of Michigan native copper production, including ore dressing; the 1850’s, iron ore production in Minnesota; and the 1860’s, lead production and processing in Missouri. But the most explosive event was the California gold rush after 1848, which not only brought tens-of-thousands of fortune hunters to the West, but also catalyzed broad mining activities and processing within the following decades. IT seems a common opinion among metallographists that all light-gray inclusions seen with the microscope in polished sections of steel are manganese sulphide. Examples of this belief are continually appearing, as for instance in the paper by Dr. Henry Fay on manganese sulphide as a source of danger in steel rails,1 and in Lieutenant-Commander Cook's paper on Metallography of Steel for U S. The finite element method of analysis was introduced by Clough.1 Within a short period, it has developed into a powerful solution technique in structural and continuum mechanics. It has been used to solve boundary value problems in two and three-dimensional elasticity.2-5 Anisotropy and heterogeneity of materials were allowed for at the earliest stages. 1,4 Its application has been extended to allow for cracks,5 creep and viscoelasticity, 6,7 incremental construction,6-8 nonlinear elasticity3,9 effect of joints in rock,10 and to materials with different behavior in tension and compression.7 Because of its versatility, the finite element method has found increasing application in the field of rock mechanics. In fact, several of the more significant developments have been motivated by problems in this field. Elasto-plastic material behavior based on the incremental or rate-type theory of plasticity rather than the deformation theory was considered by Reyes and Deere11 A material law based on a generalization 12 of the Mohr-Coulomb criterion was used. In this chapter, the formulation of material laws developed by Reyes and Deere 11 is used. An efficient analysis procedure, incorporating recent developments in finite element analysis, is developed for plane-strain conditions. To demonstrate its effectiveness, the procedure is applied to three cases, one for which an exact solution is available, another for which field observations had been made, and a third one for which a parallel study was made, using an accepted limit-equilibrium method.

The activities of SiO2, FeO, and Fe2O3 are calculated from previous experimental data on the activity of oxygen in Fe-Si-O melts at 1550°C. Using the oxide-activity data, the free energy of formation of fayalite from its oxides is evaluated for 1550°C. A number of investigators1-4 contributed to the study of the state of oxidation of iron in SiO,-FeO-Fe,O3 melts and the phase equilibria in the system Fe-Si-O. In a more detailed study, Schuhmann and Ensio5 and Michal and Schuhmann% easured the state of equilibrium in the SiO,-FeO-Fe,O3 melts saturated with y-iron or silica or both under low-oxygen potentials and within the temperature range 1250" to 1350°C. Similar measurements were also made by Turkdogan and Bills7,' over wide ranges of composition and oxygen potentials at 1550"C. Using the experimental data on the oxygen activities in the ternary system, Schuhmann' calculated the activities of silica and ferrous oxide in Si0,-FeO-Fe2O3 melts for 1350°C. Adequate knowledge on the activities of the constituent oxides of melts is essential in the study of reaction-equilibria and reaction-kinetics in oxide-melts. With this in view, the activities of oxides in SiO2-FeO-Fe2O3 melts at 1550°C are computed using the experimental data of Turkdogan and Bills7'8 on the oxygen activities in these melts.

The possible solution of some of the problems raised in H. L. Hartman's article "Determining Ventilation Requirements for Continuous Miners," which appeared in the March 1962 issue of MINING ENGINEERING, is offered by recent investigative work done at the Safety in Mines Research Establishment, Ministry of Power, Sheffield, England. Highlights of this research are outlined here. Accumulations and layers of methane form in a mine roadway because it is difficult to mix methane with air beneath it by turbulent diffusion. Such mixing involves work contrary to buoyancy forces. In specifying requirements for good ventilation it is not, therefore, sufficient to state that the airflow must be turbulent in the absence of methane. Fundamental work at SMRE on the behavior of methane roof layers has led to the formulation of rules for controlling methane roof layers which specify the ventilation velocity needed to ensure adequate mixing in terms of the rate of flow of methane into the layer (V = cu ft per min) and the airway width (D = ft). A "layering number" for methane and air has been defined by [U37/V/D] where U is the mean ventilation velocity in ft/min in the upper half of the airway. In a horizontal airway there is no mixing by turbulent diffusion for values of the layering number less than about 2, resulting in extensive roof layers. But with a layering number of 5, the layer is "brought under control"-i.e., a further increase in the layering number will shorten the length of the layer only slightly, and a small decrease in the layering number will cause only a small increase in the length of the layer. In a sloping roadway with uphill ventilation, higher values of the layering number are needed to achieve this "controlled" condition; the values range from about 5 at small slopes to about 8 at a slope of 1: 10. In downhill ventilation it is possible for layers to "back" against the ventilation, i.e., to flow uphill. The critical condition for preventing backing can also be expressed in terms of the layering number. Backing will be prevented if layering numbers are about 3 for small slopes and about 4.5 for large slopes; these values for downhill ventilation also give good control of the layer.

The hot-blast oven of which the accompanying plate gives complete details, was designed by the writer for the spiegel-furnace of the Lehigh Zinc and Iron Co., at Bethlehem, Pa. Members of the Institute who visit these works will have occasion to notice the large amount of zinc-dust in the gases, and the consequent dirtiness of both the hot-blast and the boilers. The zinc collects in a crust on the iron hot-blast pipes and leads to the frequent burning of them. A large vertical standing-pipe stove, a modification of the "Pleyer," thus gave considerable trouble by the burning of pipes and, on one occasion, the toppling over of a whole row. These inconveniences are avoided in the hanging-pipe stove under consideration, and less heating-surface has been found to be required to heat the blast to a given temperature. The construction of the stove is so simple and so plainly shown in the plate that it is needless to enlarge upon it. Each pipe rests in a box and is connected by U-branches with the next adjoining pipes. An iron sleeve is placed around the joint and tightened, as usual, with iron filings. In case of a pipe burning out, that particular section is cut off by the valves and the sleeves are broken. The pipe is then readily lifted out of the box and a new one is substituted. The whole operation requires only a short time and the section can then be at once put into use. The boxes supporting the pipes cover the whole surface of the hot-blast and are closed by iron covers rammed with fire-clay. Owing to the air-space around the U-pipes there is little loss of heat in the upper part of the stove. Each section as built has 280 square feet of heating-surface. The furnace is blown by a horizontal engine with 46-inch stroke and 48-inch diameter of blowing-tube. At 28 to 30 revolutions, the engine delivers 3000 cubic feet of air per minute, at a pressure of 5 pounds. When five sections of stove are in use, the blast enters the furnace at a temperature of 850" F. That is, there are over two cubic feet of air per square foot of heating-surface heated to that temperature per minute.

THIS paper is a discussion of the extremely valuable one of Mathewson and Phillips, The Recrystallization of Cold-Worked Alpha Brass on Annealing,1 which not only gives us a wealth of important data reached with great intelligence, but also shows both uncommon powers of imagination and a perfectly fair spirit. Let me try to analyze some of their results, and to enunciate some of the laws to which these results point. For brevity I refer to them as "The Authors." The page numbers in parentheses refer to their paper. 1. The Visible Aspects of Recrystallization.-Plastic deformation in a single direction, as in cold-rolling, draws the grains out in that direction, that is, inequiaxes them, without destroying their apparent individuality. Each grain seems to endure the drawing out without changing either its volume or its orientation materially, for the etching tint of each grain seems to be as uniform after as before the drawing out, save for the "etch bands,"2 shown in Figs. A to D of the Authors' Plate I. As the drawn-out metal is heated progressively, on reaching a certain "disintegration temperature" these old grains seem to break up, probably into submicroscopic fragments, and this apparent disintegration is followed by a coalescence of these fragments, so that their number decreases and their size increases, till they may become very much coarser than before the drawing out. Ruder3 coarsened the grains of silicon steel in this way till single grains reached an area of 50 cm. (7.75 sq. in.). The deformation itself probably breaks each grain up into many very small fragments, but the fact that each grain continues to have a uniform etching tint different from that of its neighbors indicates that these fragments retain the initial common orientation of the grain. The apparent disintegration which we observe, then, is rather an abandonment of community of orientation for individuality of orientation, by the fragments formed earlier during the deformation. AS a result of drilling operations during 1943, West Texas again added sufficient new oil reserves to replace the oil produced during the year, but failed to maintain its position in currently available reserves because the deeper discoveries will require years for development. Drilling failed to provide the additional oil necessary to meet the increase in current and anticipated market demand. Although 13.3 per cent of the total footage drilled was in wildcat exploration, the ratio of oil discoveries to total wildcats was less in 1943 than in 1942, but comparable to that in 1941. Of the 732 field wells completed, 270 were at Slaughter, 55 at Wasson, 45 at Mascho and 31 at North Cowden. As of Dec. 31, 1943, there were 361 drilling wells including 71 wildcat and 290 field wells; 19.7 per cent were wildcats. It is anticipated that the percentage of wildcats of the total wells will be higher during 1944 than in either 1942 or 1943. Tables 3 and 4 present a three-year comparison of drilling activity and illustrate the downward trend of development that has been in effect during that time. Because of development lag in the deeper Ordovician fields, several years elapse before 2 sufficient number of wells is completed to give a substantial producing rate. As these new oil reserves cost more to find, and will cost more to produce on a barrel basis than the oil marketed during the year, their reserve replacement value to the industry is less in money. Costs While complete costs for deeper drilling are not yet available for analysis, it is evi- dent from the data on drilling rates to comparable depths, contract prices, and general increases in costs, that the cost of drilling has risen approximately 20 per cent during the year. One representative drilling contractor estimates that the average drilling time on a 5000-ft. field well has increased nearly one third and that out-of-pocket costs have increased a dollar per foot. Three major factors contribute to this increased cost: (I) less experienced labor, (2) deterioration in mechanical equipment and expendable material, and (3) increased contract prices. In the past, when there were more drilling rigs than wells to be drilled, some contractors would cut their drilling profit to keep their personnel and rigs working. As this practice is no longer necessary, the contract prices are adjusted upward to assure a profit. On deep and difficult drilling, contracts are let on a cost plus basis. A number of mechanical difficulties have become evident. Inferior quality of steel used in drill pipe and rock bits has added appreciably to drilling time and cost. Contractors are experiencing delay in obtaining repair work and repair parts for prime movers. As the length of drilling time required an shallow-field wells has not increased in proportion to that on deeper wells, it seems that the medium-sized drilling rig is better adapted mechanically than the heavy one to the work imposed. One of the main deficiencies in the heavy rig equipment is inadequate pump capacity. it is well known1 that racemic mixtures of optical isomers can be separated by passing their solutions through a column packed with r- or 1-quartz powder so that one of the isomers becomes adsorbed selectively on the asymmetric quartz surfaces. Although the natural occurrence of r- and 1-quartz is more or less equally distributed, some localities show enough deviations toward a higher proportion of l-quartz2 to suggest that optical isomerism might influence quartz flotation. Beta-amines have an asymmetric carbon atom, and therefore optical activity may be expected. Beta-amines are reported to behave quite differently from alpha-amines in the flotation upgrading of certain oxidized iron ores.3 It is of interest, for both practical and theoretical reasons, to determine whether or not optical isomerism plays a role in the amine flotation of quartz. In this article the results of Hallimond tube flotation tests and of adsorption measurements using d-beta-phenylisopropylamine on both r- and 1-quartz are compared. D-beta-phenylisopropylamine was chosen for the tests because it is commercially available in optical isomers. MATERIALS AND METHODS Brazilian quartz crystals were hand-sorted according to the difference in trigonal trapezohedral faces, and each crystal was further checked by the Airy's spiral.4 The respective crystals were then crushed, and the -150 + 200-mesh fractions were screened out for the Hallimond tube tests. The samples were cleaned by brief leaching with warm, dilute hydrochloric acid, and then by repeated rinsing with distilled water. In preparation for the adsorption measurements, they were then dry-ground in a pebble mill for several hours, washed a few times with distilled water, and finally dried in a vacuum desiccator. By means of the Krypton gas adsorption method, the specific surfaces of r- and 1-quartz samples were determined to be 27,700 and 19,800 sq cm per gm respectively, the difference being due mainly to the decantation procedure rather than to the inherent difference in their grindability. D-beta-phenylisopropylamine was the only collector used in the study. It was solubilized by neutralizing with 110% of the stoichiometric requirement of 0.1 N hydrochloric acid. The specific rotation of the d-beta-phenylisopropylamine was determined with a polari-meter using sodium D line to be, Although the d-beta-phenylis~prop~lamine showed absorption maxima in the wave length region of 250 to 270 millimicrons, due presumably to the phenyl group, these peaks were too sensitive to be used for colorimetric determination of the residual concentration in the adsorption measurements. The amine-picrate method, used in the colorimetric analysis of dodecylammonium chloride,' was found to work satisfactorily for the d-beta-phenylisopropylamine. The adsorption densities were thus determined after equilibrating 40 gm of the ground quartz sample with 300 ml of solution by tumbling in separate glass-stoppered Erlenmeyer flasks for one hour. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Fig. 1 presents the adsorption densities of d-beta-phenylisopropylamine on the r- and 1-quarts in the pH range of 6 to 7.5. In agreement with data reported in the literature, the adsorption density of d-beta-phenylisopropylamine was slightly higher on the r-quartz than on the 1-quartz, although the difference was not as pronounced as one might expect from the capacity of r-quartz and 1-quartz to separate racemic
