This paper deals with the search for the best practical means of storing sulphide bearing tailings, where there is no residual excess of carbonate material. It is the common experience that the sulphide content decomposes, with the aid of bacterial action, and the resulting sulphuric acid escapes, along with any heavy metal solutes, through embankments that are usually porous to some degree. The problem is typified in the tailings of the uranium operations of Elliot Lake, Ontario, where mining started some 20 years ago. The approach to tailings disposal paralleled the practice for other hydrometallurgical plants treating gold and base metal ores. Impoundment areas were designed to retain solids, and a clear and neutral overflow was considered satisfactory practice. Now experience has shown that these areas, some idle for over a dozen years, release acids, in seepage and overflows, to an unacceptable degree. To protect natural water courses neutralizing plants are operated wherever required. Lime slurry is fed continuously into the tailings outflows in a quantity sufficient to raise the pH to 8.5 and precipitate heavy metals that may be in solution. The objection to this procedure is that the plants will require servicing indefinitely, unless a better remedy is found.

As a part of a large research and development program in Finland, a system calibration for an UAV measurement method having practical experiments in a Jorvas Railway Yard design and construction project. The Railway yard construction are was measured using an UAV measurement device by Smartplanes (Smartone) and using some reference points measured by a GNSS device. The measured data was cleaned, combined and adjusted through Least Squares Optimization using the software developed by a Finnish company Pieneering Oy. As references, two different laser scans as well as total station surveys were used. For applicability evaluation, the accuracy of measurement, the reliability of measurement, and the economy of measurement were used. Based on the comparisons, the achieved precision of the UAV measurement was high, instead the accuracy of measurement was not sufficient in this case. The principle of this photogrammetric measurement includes a lot of redundant observations making it possible to achieve a high level of reliability. The economy in this Railway Yard Design project was not able to achieve.

The Bureau of Mines has developed probes to be used in emergency mine rescue operations by being lowered through a borehole drilled into an underground mine. Various probes can provide two-way voice communication with trapped miners, continuous mine atmosphere monitoring, temperature indication, and television searching capability. At present, an infrared imaging probe is being developed for "seeing" through coal smoke.

"In this work, the effect of pre-strain rolling on the annealing behavior of friction-stir welded 6061-T6 aluminum alloy was studied. To this end, the as-welded material was rolled to 10 or 20 pct. of thickness reduction prior to the standard post-weld T6 heat treatment. Three rolling directions were the 3-mm thick sheet were considered: along the welding direction, perpendicular to the welding direction, and at the angle of 45° to the welding direction. At relatively low pre-strains (10 pct.), the annealing behavior was found to be very sensitive to the rolling path, and rolling along the welding direction was most effective in suppressing abnormal grain growth. On the other hand, increasing the pre-strains to 20 pct. of thickness reduction inhibited abnormal grain growth irrespective of the rolling path.INTRODUCTION Heat-treatable wrought Al-Mg-Si alloys are widely used due to attractive combination of strength, ductility, excellent corrosion resistance and low cost (Polmear, 2006). To provide the optimal balance of mechanical properties, these materials are typically commercially available in appropriately work- and precipitation-hardened conditions (Polmear, 2006). During conventional fusion welding, however, the prior strengthening effect is totally lost due to elimination of the work hardened structure and dissolution of the strengthening precipitations. An innovative friction-stir welding (FSW) technology may partially overcome this problem. Due to the solid-state character of this process, which involves very large strains, the welded material is characterized by fine-grained microstructure with moderate-to-high dislocation density, and thus the prior work hardening effect may be preserved or even enhanced (Threadgill et al., 2009; Mishra & Ma, 2005). However, heat input associated with FSW inevitably leads to dissolution and/or coarsening of strengthening precipitates, thus giving rise to the undesirable material softening. In an attempt to restore the strength of the friction-stir welded material, the standard T6 post-weld heat treatment has been applied, but this approach was found to lead to abnormal grain growth (Malopheyev et al., 2016; Mironov, 2013, Mironov et al., 2015)."

High-Mg-content concentrates are usually treated in Jinchuan flash smelting Furnace. Because the viscosities of high-Mg-content slag is very high, the operation of flash smelting becomes very difficult. To solve this problem, the viscosities of the semi-synthesized FeO-MgO-Si02 slag of different compositions were measured. The results showed that when in the slag the weight percentage of MgO [m(Mgo)] is 6-10%, the ratio of the weight percentage of iron to that of Si02, m(Fe)/m(SiO2) is 1.1-1.4 and the temperatures are within 1473?1773K, the slag viscosities increased with the increase of m(Mgo) and m(Fe)/m(sio,). When m(Mgo)<6%, the smelting temperature should be controlled at I 300°C in order to to keep the smooth operation. When m(Mgo» 10%, the temperature should be kept above 1633K. When the content of MgO is higher, a lower viscosity slag ean be produced by decreasing the ratio of m(Fe)/m(sio,). The appropriate ratio of m(Fe)/m(sio,) for Jinchuan flash smelting furnace is about 1.2.

Axis House manufactures and supplies alkylhydroxamate reagent of various carbon chain lengths for application in flotation of oxide copper and other minerals. As part of reagent performance improvement the structural factors of hydroxamate are examined by various analytical tools in particular with X-ray diffraction of single crystals. In a recent publication, the structure of n-octylhydroxamic acid and its corresponding potassium salt are presented with findings of hydroxamic functional group geometric preference, H-bonding, keto-enol tautomerisation, acid-salt aggregation and alignment of carbon chain. In this paper an example of branched alkylhydroxamate 3, 5, 5-trimethylhexylhydroxamate will be presented and compared with the result of linear alkylhydroxamate.

Dredging is a common method of remediating ponds containing contaminated wastes. However, dewatering of the dredged solids is usually not well integrated with the dredging phase. As a result, overall project efficiency can be poor. Specifically, since dredges deliver material in a widely varying slurry form and since dewatering presses require the delivered material to be uniform, union of the two systems often results in inconsistent operation of the overall process. In an effort to enhance overall dredging and dewatering process production rates as well as minimize the return of suspended solids in the decant water, a new process was developed to provide a consistent dredged sludge for delivery to the press. This paper discusses modifications made to a conventional dredging and dewatering process to improve production rates and dewatering capabilities. These modifications are applicable to any project where efficient solids dewatering is required and where returning decant water must be visually free of suspended solids.

Because of their reduction in capital costs, virtual elimination of maintenance. ease of control and "cleanliness"; interest in electrical techniques has accelerated. 1,2 Resistance cable and other heaters have been given some attention. but less well known in the recent introduction of thermal conductive coatings. This paper is addressed to the use of thermal conductive coatings for heating fluid-transport piping and storage tanks. Emphasis will be given to the simplicity, efficiency, and versatility of design and application which their unique properties further contribute to the general economics of electrical heating.

Mine planners are under pressure to evaluate the impact of changing economic times and newly acquired data on the mine plan. Incorporating change, such as commodity prices, customer sales, changing cost assumptions, and newly acquired geologic data into the mine plans requires quick turn-around for model building and planning to keep the mine plan on pace with changes as they are occurring. Because of the length of time required to perform some of the geologic modeling and mine planning tasks, planning frequency may not be keeping pace with the frequency of change. This paper discusses how one company has increased the frequency rate and accuracy of mine plans to keep current with incoming data, ensuring mine plans reflect the latest information, thereby minimizing or eliminating production cost variance.

When it comes to safety in the mining and extractive industries, success is literally a matter of life and death. Anything short of perfection is not acceptable. In recent years, the mining industry in the United States has made tremendous strides in terms of health and safety for its workers. Part of that success has come with an increased focus on the issues of safety, an intense examination of procedures, liberal sharing of best practices and a focus on the synergy between safety, reliability and environment. During his closing keynote address of the Safety Management & System Reliability Conference in Minneapolis, MN on Nov. 15, Joe Driscoll, vice president of Great Basin Gold, showed a calendar from the coal fields in Pennsylvania from the early 1900s. The calendar marked the number of mine-related deaths each month. Some months, the number was as high as 50. It was an illustration of how far things have come, but there is still much more work to be done.

"In a technologically advanced era, where process control is accurately maintained within the smallest error margins, and accuracy and precision are continuously improved, sampling is still left to the lowest paid employee in the company without training him or her properly to understand the relevance and importance of the task. In this paper the objectives of sampling in a process control environment is discussed and an attempt is made to link it to the theory of sampling. Some of the practical problems associated with implementing theoretical sampling principles in an industrial environment will be elucidated and some examples given on how compromises are made. Different methods of sampling will be discussed with real life examples from different manufacturing industries."

Coalmines, like any other mine, generally involve the classic three-staged approach to mining studies; namely concept, pre-feasibility study (PFS) and feasibility studies (Cusworth, 2012). Subsequent to these studies, and in instances parallel to these studies, the commitment to an environmental impact statement (EIS) is made in order to secure both state and federal development consent. In recent times, the sentiment to both mining and coal is changing whereby the traditional approaches to mine planning and economic evaluation is complicated by evolving environmental legislation, expectations and time frames. It is all too common to take shortcuts in the development of projects in order to create the perception of cost savings and expediting the delivery timeline. Atkins (2016) points out that: boards of so many small to mid-tier mining companies, and a few majors, focus on relentless project delivery too early in the project process, with so little time and effort applied to risk analysis and option development. Unforeseen risks can cost any timeline or budget far more than the effort required assessing and mitigating these. Mechanical sampling provides a definitive value for the product sampled but the results are not instantaneous, meaning that decisions on process control can only be made hours after the sample is taken. Chemicals are added, tailings are sent to waste, stockyards are laid and the data for the decision-making is historical. Online analysers provide instantaneous information, allowing operators to make immediate and cost-saving decisions on the process. However, pending the specific online analysis application, there is a need for reference sampling for dynamic calibration/bias updating of the analysers so that they can deliver the desired precision and accuracy. What would be the economic justification for combining mechanical sampling with online analysis to reduce laboratory costs and provide immediate process control with certainty of accuracy? "INTRODUCTION The recent drop in iron ore prices has claimed an unwitting casualty in vanadium. Vanadium is dominantly produced as a co-product of steel production. The recent shutdown at EVRAZ’s Mapochs steel-vanadium operations in South Africa has cut-off 10% of the world’s vanadium output. Earlier in February, 2015, Australia’s Atlantic Ltd. suspended operations at its Windimurra iron-vanadium complex after a fire caused severe damage at the plant. Since then, challenging market conditions has resulted in the permanent closure of this operation. This decoupling of vanadium production from integrated iron ore producers presents an opportunity for vanadium exploration companies to target single-product deposits. This trend is manifested in the increasing number of pure-play vanadium ventures around the world.The mine production of vanadium is dominated by three countries namely, China, South Africa and Russia, which collectively produce 98% of the world’s vanadium. While the use of vanadium as an alloy in the steel industry remains by far the largest application for this metal, growth in demand is expected to come from the renewable energy industry in the form of batteries for energy storage. This paper summarizes the current state of vanadium exploration, briefly describes the vanadium market and lists sources of future demand for the metal. TREND IN VANADIUM EXPLORATION The most active participants in the current vanadium exploration are pure-play vanadium ventures in Brazil, South Africa and Australia. These ventures are targeting deposits with higher vanadium grade than those typically mined in titaniferous magnetite operated by integrated steel-vanadium producers. The 10% shortfall in vanadium production resulting from the shutdown at EVRAZ’s Mapochs is expected to be partially compensated by Largo Resources’ Maracás Menchen vanadium operation located in the State of Bahia in Brazil, which commenced operation in August 2014 and is expected to reach design capacity of 11,400 tonnes of vanadium pentaoxide (V2O5) by the end of 2015. The estimated production1 for 2015 is 6,500 tonnes of V2O5 at a target production cost of $3.60/lb. This is the first vanadium operation to be placed in production in the Western Hemisphere in over 35 years."

Calcium carbonate is one of the highest volume industrial mineral products in North America. It is used in filler and extender applications, roofing products, floor tile, glass manufacture, etc. Calcium carbonate has over a dozen major filler and extender applications plus a host of minor uses. North American consumption of calcium carbonate fillers and extenders in 1991 is estimated at over 5,000,000 tons valued in excess of $400,000,000. There were five major suppliers of calcium carbonate fillers in the Middle Atlantic region in 1988 :?Bestone, Genstar, National Gypsum, Thomasville Stone and Lime, and White Pigment. With the exception of Genstar&apos;s Maryland operation, all of these operations are within a few miles of York, Pennsylvania. The Millington Group (TMG) purchased the assets of Bestone Corporation in February of 1989. TMG then seized the opportunity to strengthen its business position by acquiring National Gypsum&apos;s and White Pigment&apos;s Pennsylvania filler businesses in December, 1989 and July, 1990, respectively. By July of 1990 TMG&apos;s filler business acquisitions included six quarries and one underground mine, totaling over 1,200 acres and three processing facilities. The assets were restructured into two new companies - Delta Carbonate, Inc. and Penroc, Inc. (hereafter collectively referred to as Delta). Delta identified the assets of the three predecessor companies as undervalued from the outset. The initial phase of Delta&apos;s turnaround strategy was to reassess the combined mineral. mining, processing, transportation and marketing assets. The second phase was to effectively integrate these resources in order to exploit their inherent synergy.

"WHAT I PROPOSE TO DO is to review or report very briefly and generally on the most important subject areas of environmental concern within the mining industry and to indicate the progress being made. First, however, it seems to me both appropriate and necessary to refer to what I said in an address to the CIM Annual Western Meeting, in November 1971, in Vancouver. At that time, I tried to convey: that the awareness and alertness of this far-flung and diversified industry was sharply on the up-swing; that the knowledge of helpful technology for the abatement of pollution by water and solids was significantly increasing; that most mines were doing something about it; that many had already achieved a recycling of process water to a really significant extent; that progress was being made - though not without considerable difficulty - on the large-scale neutralization and subsequent chemical treatment of acid- and metals-bearing waters; that increasing work was being done by individual mining companies on methods for the vegetation of completed tailings impoundments; and that it had been possible to develop a meaningful estimate of the amount of money to be spent by the industry on environmental control measures during the period 1971-75 (as much as $500,- 000,000 ) . Reference was also made at that time to the constructive work in hand toward the fixation, elimination or dispersion of sulphur from smelters and to the considerable attention which was being given by the indust(y itself toward in-plant problems, e.g., dust and noise. Finally, note was taken of the fact that the inclusion of environmental control costs in the pre-operational financial provisions of new mining operations is now established practice."

"Two structures, a fracture zone and a shear zone, contained the two orebodies that yielded all the ore mined at the Gold Eagle mine. The orebodies are known as the Gold Eagle vein and the No. 1 shear zone. Both structures occur close to contacts between Timiskaming sediments, Algoman diorite, and later Algoman granite-granodiorite. The structures were produced by compressive forces from a south direction acting in the southern part of the McKenzie-Gold Eagle stock and in a cylindrically shaped inclusion of Timiskaming sediments.The mine, which exhausted its ore reserves and ceased operations in September of 1941, is on the east side of Mackenzie island, in the centre of Dome township in the Red Lake area.The Gold Eagle vein was located during the summer of 1933 by a surface exploration programme carried out under the direction of Alex Gillies. Sub-· sequent diamond drilling and underground exploration led to the installation of a mill, which came into production in October of 1937. The No. 1 shear zone was discovered and explored later from a drive on the 500-foot level. The mine produced a total of 40,204 oz. gold and 19,157 oz. silver from 223,628 tons of ore hoisted (180,095 tons milled) during its 4 years of mill operation.GENERAL GEOLOGYThe ore-bearing structures trend S.61°E. across Timiskaming greywacke, Algoman diorite, and later Algoman granite-granodiorite. The greywacke is a large, cylindrically shaped mass that is separated from the mai~ mass by the later intrusives. It is a massive, light-coloured, quartzose variety that has been recrystallized by the enclosing granite. The diorite and the granite-granodiorite are early and late components of the McKenzie-Gold Eagle stock. The diorite, which is a porphyritic rock containing large crystals of andesine-labradorite surrounded by hornblende, was injected early in the Algoman period. It was intruded and in large measure surrounded by the later granite-granodiorite. This rock varies from a granodiorite near the mine to a granite in the centre of the stock. All three intrusions are massive and homogeneous."

Today&apos;s energy era is the beginning of a transition from the Petroleum Age to a future age of renewable fuel resources. Fuels for the transition era will come from unconventional sources and conversion technology. Affecting the practicability of transition technologies are attitudes of the public, capital requirements and availability, patterns of fuels utilization, producibility of fuels and the actions of governments. Primary energy sources to replace deficiencies of oil and gas and provide growth in the period of transition will be coal, oil shale, nuclear energy and peat.

The Critchfield manganese deposit, Huntingdon County, Pa., was investigated by the Bureau of Mines in October 1942. Iron ore was mined from an open cut just southeast of the manganese deposit about 80 years ago. The Critchfield Sand & Feldspar Co. was operating (1942) a clay-mining and beneficiation plant northeast of the manganese deposit. The Bureau completed six rotary bucket-drill holes and three hand-auger holes, aggregating 370 feet on the deposit. This report describes the work performed and presents the results obtained.
