In hard rock mining, large-scale bulk mining methods such as block or panel caving (BC/PC) and sublevel caving (SLC) typically generate significant surface deformations such as subsidence. Surface deformations need to be considered in the project evaluation and planning stages of cave mines, for example, planning and location of critical underground mine planning infrastructure such as portals, haulage and vent shafts, access roads, or potential damage to existing infrastructure, changes to surface water management, waste dump, stockpile and tailings dam stability, and environmental impacts. Assessing the impact and risks associated with subsidence is a key component in robust mine planning and operations management.

In the dynamic realm of mining health and safety, addressing psychosocial hazards is crucial. Legislative requirements now demand employers navigate this complex terrain, but uncertainty often clouds effective management. The resource industry’s skills in managing physical hazards are showcased in their adaptability in this case study. Integrating the Critical Risk Management framework with organisational psychology, a mining company achieved a transformative breakthrough. They identified and assessed psychosocial hazards and established a sustained and risk based approach to managing these hazards within the workplace. This innovative approach encompasses strategic steps. Key learning from the case study was: - Beyond Bow-tie Analysis: Discover why a linear risk analysis tool, like Bow-tie Analysis, falls short in capturing the dynamic and interdependent nature of psychosocial hazards. - Psychological Safety Power: Learn why psychological safety is vital for gathering accurate data and ensuring control effectiveness. - Dive into how it creates a data-driven foundation for success. - Broadening the Brush: Explore the impact of preloading Broad Brush Risk Assessments, an educational and dynamic hazard-identification tool. Coal mining is likely to sustain its critical role as energy requirements are increasing. While surface mining exploits coal seams near the surface, underground mining techniques are crucial for extracting deep coal reserves. Longwall mining is one of the most common methods used in underground coal mining operations. This paper introduces a data-based framework — including data collection, data analysis and the interpretation of operational data — for understanding the system efficiency of a longwall shearer. Operational performance is evaluated by the time between arrivals (TBA) and duration of the shearer stoppages, shearer drums’ reversal time, cutting speed and flit speed on daily production in a longwall top coal caving (LTCC) mine. A discrete event simulation model is developed to represent the bidirectional cutting sequence of a longwall shearer.

An understanding of the spatial and temporal variations of surface moisture content over a heap leach pad is essential for leaching production and to achieve a high ore recovery. The current leach-pad monitoring and data-collection practice remains highly labor intensive and exposes technical staff to cyanide solution, a hazardous material. To address these challenges, we propose using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) equipped with thermal imaging sensors to remotely obtain image data with high temporal and spatial resolution for monitoring the surface moisture distribution over heap leach pads. A field study was conducted over a sprinkler-irrigated heap leach pad at El Gallo gold mine in Sinaloa, Mexico, and the acquired data were used to generate moisture distribution maps of the heap leach pad’s surface. The created moisture maps provide direct visualizations of surface moisture variation over the surveyed area. Such graphical results are effective tools for inspecting heap-leaching operations.

Fatigue is a relatively well-investigated topic in the surface transportation industry with a research focus on sleep deprivation and disruption. This paper examines fatigue in mining operations. While mine operators are using or currently introducing technology to monitor fatigue, there is little work that focuses on the operators’ experience of fatigue and the acceptance of fatigue-monitoring technology. Focus groups were conducted to investigate these topics. The results of this research suggest that current fatigue-monitoring systems lack validity, reliability and user acceptance. Overall, these results emphasize the importance of a socio-technical systems perspective to guide interventions aiming at improving miner health and safety.

As a result of ever increasing complexity, alternatives of process and remoteness of site, there is an ever increasing emphasis on accurate estimating and the attendant cost control systems in the international market of today for the Mineral Industry where initial plant costs are becoming a more important factor than operating costs. An undervaluation means trouble ahead. An over-cautious assessment may bring an unnecessary abandonment of a project. Consequently, the ultimate cost must be predicted early and accurately and must be controlled to this parameter during the design and construction phases. Cost Est!~ mating is one of a variety of project management tools used to assist in planning and achieving the optimum balance between Quality, Cost and Time, the eternal triangle of evaluation, namely obtaining a project of acceptable quality at minimum cost and on time. In order to attain these established objectives, proper planning, organizing, coordinating, monitoring, adjusting and controlling the design, procurement and construction elements of the project are essential.This project management approach based upon the principle of a Task Force under single management, comprising a complete service organization, requires a substantial number of qualified individuals specialized in their own field and capable of working together as a team to perform their various functions effectively. On September 3rd, 1947, the Acadia Coal Company put into operation a central coal preparation plant. This plant was designed to process all coals mined by this Company in the Pictou County coal field. The problem, briefly, was to make a three-way separation of the raw coal fed into the plant. It was desired to remove all stone, metal, and wood from the marketable coal and to produce a splint coal from the raw material which would be suitable for making power. This splint coal product is belted directly to the power plant which is adjacent to the wash plant. To attain this object it was therefore necessary, first, to wash the raw coal, removing all splint, stone, metal, and wood. The stone, metal, wood, and highest-ash splint had then to be removed by a second washing in order to obtain the lower-ash splint for use in the power plant. The plant is on the east side of the Allan colliery, in the town of Stellarton (see accompanying photograph). It is of steel frame construction with wood siding, covered on the exterior with corrugated galvanized iron. Considerable concrete had to be poured for the foundation piers as the plant site is largely 'fill' ground. This necessitated the construction of extremely heavy footings containing a large amount of reinforcing steel. In all, 884 cu. yds. of concrete were poured for the various pits, tanks, and foundations; its average test was about 3,500 lb. per square inch. At the time the plant was constructed, the steel shortage in Canada and the United States was acute and, in order to obtain steel for the structure which is four stories high- an unused part of the Allan bankhead was torn down. Enough steel was obtained from this demolition to fabricate the new plant.

"IntroductionANY PLANT processing mined Athabaska oil •sand for the recovery of oil produces, as a waste material, about one ton of sand for every barrel of oil recovered. A disposal problem of major proportions is thus indicated. For a 100,000-barrel per day plant, provision must be made for moving .about 4,000 tons of sand per hour on a continuous basis to a tailings dump at least several thousand feet removed from the plant site.Of the many known ways of conveying solids on .a large scale, the hydraulic pipeline transfer method is becoming increasingly important because of convenience and economy of operation. It has been in use for many years in mill operations at metalliferrous mines for the disposal of tailings and as such was a natural outgrowth of •hydraulic sluicing (3). Pipeline transportation of mill concentrates has been adopted recently ( 1), wherein high-density solids are moved several miles by hydraulic pipeline. The flotation power of the water suspending the solids may be increased 'by addition of magnetite for the handling of ore in pipelines (8). Low-density solids such as coal have received considerable study for low-cost pipe-lining (2) and a successful operation with coal has been carried out in England with indications of considerable savings over other methods of transportation (9). Dredge operations are based on pipeline transportation for the dredged sol-ids, and the scale of pipelining there .has involved pipe sizes as large as 32-inch (6). However, the tendency has been to regard the pumping of solids in water merely as a simple method of transportation and little consideration has been given in the published literature to study of the most economical modes of operating .a pipeline."

As man searches unexplored horizons for new and economic industry, he must be constantly and acutely aware of the presence or absence of that precious commodity without which Industry, indeed Man himself, could not survive --W ATE R. The water requirements of the world today are magnanimous, considering that in 1960 the estimated consumption in the united States was over 300 billion GPD (1) or more than 1,700 GPD per person (5). The magnitude of the problem can be visualized as one considers that three times this quantity of water will be required in the united States by the year 2 000, when the dependable supplies of water are estimated to be only two-thirds of that required(2). How, then, can we continue to wreak such havoc on that life-sustaining substance -W ATE R? It is necessary, indeed mandatory, that those engaged in the Engineering profession consider it their moral obligation, not only to conserve the quantity of water which their conceived projects may require, but also to treat the effluent in order that the eutro-phication of natural water courses not be abnormally accelerated. The International Nickel Company of Canada Limited consumes some 33-1/2 millions of gallons of fresh water daily at its nine town-sites, fourteen mines and eight plants throughout the Sudbury district of Ontario. The present daily reuse of water exceeds 100 millions of gallons in the same area. It is noteworthy to mention that the milling rate has increased from 46,000 to 70,000 tons per day during the past five years, with no increase in water consumption. In fact, there has been a reduction in fresh water requirements.

"Mining is an important part of the economy of Namibia. In 2016, 11.1 percent of the GDP was the result of mining activities with 22 active mines (The Chamber of Mines of Namibia, 2016). Only one of them consists of an underground mining operation.The global annual production of fluorspar is approximately 5.4 to 6.3 Mt (6 to 7 million st) (U.S. Geological Survey National Minerals Information Center, 2017). Okorusu has produced on average about 45 kt/a (50,000 stpy) in recent years (U.S. Geological Survey National Minerals Information Center, 2015).The Okorusu Mine is Namibia’s only fluorspar mine. Fluorspar was mined in an openpit mine with four individual pits (A-D) since 1980. In 2014, the mine closed due to the increased stripping ratio and beneficiation problems. The mine assets were bought by Gecko Namibia. Currently, Gecko uses parts of the processing plant for beneficiation of graphite from a neighboring mine. Figure 1 shows a panoramic view with the four pits and the mine village.The intent is to develop a concept for the further underground development of the mine. There are still about 6.3 Mt (7 million st) of measured resources left in the deposit, with an average grade of 27.5 percent CaF2. This study focuses on the underground mine design. The above-ground plant and facilities are considered as remaining unchanged.For solving the task to design the mine, a site visit for data collecting was conducted. Resource estimations were calculated based on existing drill data, and consequently, block models were created. The development of the mine design included the selection of the most suitable mining method, mining technology and mine organization. Moreover, some economic considerations are pointed out, followed by a profitability assessment."

"Calcite-cemented joints abound in the rock masses of Beishan area, which is the most potential area for the high-level radioactive waste (HLW) disposal of China. The mechanical properties of Beishan granite containing a calcite-cemented joint with a dip angle of 82° was investigated under uniaxial compression and the acoustic emission (AE) characteristics were also studied in this paper. Compared to intact granite, the calcite-cemented joint caused a decrease more than 50% in uniaxial compressive strength and a decrease more than 90% in shear strength. The Young’s modulus was also decreased, while the circumferential deformation of jointed granite was sharply increased. The AE monitoring system successfully recorded the process of micro-crack development and the results indicated that the risk of rock-burst could be reduced due to the appearance of calcite-cemented joint.INTRODUCTIONThe properties of jointed rocks differ considerably from that of intact rock. Due to the difficulties in specimen preparation, analogue experiments with artificially prefabricated fractures are often used to study the mechanical behavior of jointed rock (Chen et al. 2012; Kulatilake et al. 2001; Singh et al. 2001). However, natural joints are not quite similar to the artificial fractures and it is necessary to investigate the mechanical behavior of jointed rocks. Xie et al. 2011 studied the mechanical properties of marbles with natural joints by uniaxial compression tests and found that the uniaxial compressive strength of jointed rock is greatly decreased. With the unaxial compression tests, Jacobsson 2005, 2007 tested the intact and jointed granites, which were taken from the potential site for high-level radioactive waste (HLW) disposal of Sweden. However, no significant difference in strength or modulus was found. The above research results are inconsistent and it indicates the complexity of the mechanical properties of natural joints."

Substantial priming was a considered necessity for proper initiation of ammonium nitrate-fuel oil mixes as ANFO began to carve its niche in the mining industry in the latter fifties. Heavy priming accompanied the introduction of prills and oil to many blasting operations, large charges of high explosives were commonly used at the bottom, top and frequent intervals through-out the column. As the quality of ammonium nitrate improved and operators became more experienced, primer costs began to diminish. Increased experimentation continued with reduced primer costs a main objective. Cast primers were introduced and became accepted as an excellent companion for ANFO. Although the trend toward larger diameter boreholes became increasingly popular, emphasis on lower and lower priming costs continued. A primer was simply required to produce any type of initiation within the ANFO column to be considered adequate. Suddenly ANFO priming had digressed from excessive to marginal. Early experimental data developed at "test site" and laboratory locations indicated that ANFO had a tendency to react inefficiently in the initiation region of the column unless substantially primed. This was evidenced by the presence of unstable reaction rates detected with newly developed detonation velocity measuring equipment. For over a century, the Sunshine Mine in Idaho has been a major producer of silver. An estimated 335,000,000 troy ounces of silver has been mined. This has established the Sunshine Mine as the largest single source of silver in the world. Because the dominant silver containing mineral is tetrahedrite, a copper and antimony sulfide, normal metallurgical treatments to recover the precious metal are not practical. Thus, over the course of the company's history, novel, hydrometallurgical technologies have been developed on-site to handle complex, precious metal containing materials. Recently, the use of Sunshine technology has been extended to the recycle of secondary materials. As well, the use of Sunshine technology by other organizations for treatment of both primary and secondary feedstocks containing precious and base metals is an area of growing interest. This paper will provide an overview of Sunshine hydrometallurgical technologies including the applicability of Sunshine technology to the recycling of precious and base metals.

A newly started copper hydrometallurgical plant was confronted with a manganese oxidation issue in electrowinning. This oxidation, in the absence of the amount of iron required to stabilise the electrolyte oxidation-reduction potential, is known to produce oxidants (MnO2, MnO4) that can cause accelerated degradation of the organic phase components in solvent extraction and corrosion of lead anodes in electrowinning. The overpotential required to build up the protection layer on new anodes causes an increased electrolyte potential that creates oxidized species in the electrowinning tankhouse, and these species come back to solventextraction plant with the recycled spent electrolyte. This paper discusses the impacts of manganese oxidants on the health of a plant organic phase. It also outlines the actions taken using iron scraps and sulfur dioxide to mitigate the problem that happened due to the lack of ferrous iron sulfate available on site, as recommended for better control.

In 1965, Monsanto started planning of a new dike (No. 15) for use in disposing of ore tailings at its Columbia, Tennessee phosphorus plant. Generally, in the phosphorus industry only clay tailings are produced making it necessary to borrow fill for construction of a retaining dike. Borrow area investigations indicated that weathered shales and limestones adjacent to the dam site would provide adequate construction materials. It was proposed that the more clayey weathered shales would be used for the impervious core and the more granular weathered limestones would be placed in the outer shell of the dike. A dike section is shown in Figure 1 with gradation curves for core and shell materials in Figure 2. Figure 3 shows an aerial view of the tailings pond and dike during first-stage construction. Although the borrow area explorations indicated that the weathering of the sedimen-tary deposits was highly irregular, it was not considered necessary, at the time, to specify special excavation techniques that would ensure a thorough blending of the materials in the borrow pit. Instead, because of the short haul distance, a scraper operation for both clay core and granular shell materials was adopted as the most economical construction method. Using this materials-handling technique, variations in permeability could be expected in the compacted layers inthe embankment. Where continuous layers of less clayey limestones were placed in the core of the dam, extending from the upstream to downstream shells, seepage losses would be expected to increase substantially. Upon completion of the damn 1966, and shortly after reservoir filling, it was apparent that the construction technique used had resulted in the formation of pervious layers through the clay core. Excessive seepage on the downstream face of the dike was noticeable within a very short time. A monitoring program was established, using piezometric observations and flow measurements. These data indicated that seepage should be reduced and the application of an asphaltic emulsion

"This paper provides an overview of the current use of auxiliary ventilation product and the challenges with limited air quantity in dead-end entry or working face. The PVC low frictional factor, low physical constraint and minimum leakage ventilation duct was development with ""made in US and used in US"". The PVC duct development covering operational and total cost of ownership with on-going success will be presented. This paper will discuss mine sites using new PVC vent duct underground and the results from operational and technical side making a difference. INTRODUCTION The Turquoise Ridge Joint Venture (TRJV) is located in northern central Nevada, and is situated within the Basin and Range province, near the northeast end of the Osgood Mountains (see Figure 1). The TRJV mine consists of typical Carlin type- gold mineralization characterized by low strength rock of altered limestone’s, siltstones, and mudstones. The weak nature of the ground facilitates the underhand cut and fill mining methods [3].Mining Method; Underhand cut and fill : The mine uses underhand cut and fill method which has 12’x12’ top cuts and several different size undercuts. The ore body is accessed off of a secondary development heading, utilizing a heading with a cross section of 14W x 14H or 15W x 16H configuration. In the wider and more massive zones, two headings in a production panel may be worked at any one time. Drift round lengths are determined by the type of drilling machine being used. An example of a typical topcut and associated undercut layout is shown in Figure 2. SECONDARY / AUXILIARY VENTILATION IN UNUNDERGROUND METAL MINES The auxiliary ventilation system provides the required air volumes at the face of dead-end developments and production workings, which in many cases may be considered as the primary method of assuring that the air quantity and quality standards in these working areas are satisfied. The Auxiliary fans and ducting systems are usually the primary means of delivering the required air volumes to the face of dead-end developments and production workings. Both centrifugal and axial-flow fans are used in underground auxiliary ventilation systems, usually electric powered. The internally direct driven axial-flow fans tend to be more popular because of their compactness and adaptability to staging. The most commonly used materials for ridged tubing are coated steel, alloyed steel, fiberglass and resin. Flexible (collapsible) ventilation tubing is also used and is usually made from neoprene-coated or nylon material. To add stiffness and reduce collapsibility these fabric ducts can be formed over a steel spring frame. A very important factor in the design of an auxiliary ventilation system is to minimize leakage and reduce the frictional pressure losses along the auxiliary ducting systems by minimizing their friction factors (K)."

Dugald River Mine (DRM) is located approximately 85 km north-east of Mount Isa, and 65 km northwest of Cloncurry, in the north-west Queensland Minerals Province of Australia. DRM is an underground operation and includes an above ground processing area, a 200 ha tailings facility, two waste rock dumps and associated infrastructure. The mining method is conventional underground longhole open stoping and downhole benching of a lead/zinc deposit within a black slate environment. The deposit is estimated to contain ~53 Mt of zinc and lead, which will be mined over a 30-year period. During operations, waste rock is segregated into either Potentially Acid Forming (PAF) or Non-Acid Forming (NAF) based primarily on the sulfide concentration of the rock. In particular, the NAF waste rock is an asset and is used for various small construction projects during operation; however, its primary use is for rehabilitation work at closure. Since beginning operations in 2017, DRM has generated more NAF than was originally anticipated. Whilst this is an excellent asset to DRM, it did pose a logistical problem of where to store the additional NAF for the life-of-mine and how to manage the run-off. DRM experiences distinct wet and dry seasons with hot conditions and periods of rainfall between November to April, and relatively dry and mild conditions between May to October. Majority of rainfall is received between January and February with an annual average rainfall of 501.1 mm. Short and intense rainfall events are common. DRM’s above ground infrastructure is land-locked between two large ephemeral watercourses, making the significant expansion of any assets challenging from a permitting/regulation and cost perspective. MMG is also a member of the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) and is committed to adapting to a changing climate through operations and closure. Following extensive studies DRM opted to store the additional NAF material into the adjoining NAF Dam and concurrently upgrade a previously minor sediment basin into a highly engineered sediment basin which relies on automatic flocculant dosing to meet the required discharge quality limits. This basin is climate-resilient in that the dosing system can be adjusted to counter high intensity extended rainfall events which produce highly variable inflow water quality. This abstract broadly describes how DRM designed and implemented an engineering innovation to enable the site to meet the changing climatic challenges. The abstract then describes the process to design the sediment basin and how the dosing rate was established and validated. Finally, the abstract comments on the effectiveness of the sediment basin and how it has revolutionised DRM’s approach to water treatment and management; all whilst minimising the disturbance footprint of the operation
