"Drilling and blasting are fundamental operations in the mining cycle and constitute an important component of the mining costs. Problems associated with improper drilling and blasting practices can create losses of several millions of dollars per year. For this reason, a Blasting Technology program was initiated in 1984 at the Noranda Technology Centre (NTC). In this paper, advances made at NTC in drill and blast technology are reviewed. Impacts of drilling and basting for Noranda are assessed in terms of dilution and ore losses. Future challenges are addressed. IntroductionUp to 1997, Noranda was a diversified natural resources company that operated in three sectors: mining and metallurgy, forest products, and oil and gas. The company employs more than 33 000 people in operations and sales offices around the world. Today, Noranda has returned to its roots in mining and metallurgy. The new vision of Noranda is to be dedicated to the responsible and profitable development of mineral resources around the world for the benefit of its shareholders. In so doing, Noranda will continue to be deeply committed to the environment, health, workplace safety, cost competitiveness and return on capital. Technology is an integral part of Noranda’s success strategies. For this reason, the Noranda Technology Centre, formerly known as Noranda Research Centre, was founded in 1963. Since then, it has undergone four expansion phases to keep up with the increasing needs of the businesses. Today, NTC employs more than 220 specialists who work in partnership with different Noranda companies to identify, develop, and transfer technology to the operations, as well as to explore new sectors of activity."

Scale physical models, constructed according to the principle of similarity theory, have been widely used to simulate the mining disturbances to surrounding strata and to evaluate the effectiveness of implemented ground control techniques. This technique has also been used for studying mining-induced surface and subsurface subsidence. The movements of the observation points installed on the physical model at different mining stages are currently measured using total station which is time-consuming and inaccurate especially on small scale models. A photogrammetry-based measurement system has been developed. During a physical modeling process, photos of the model can be taken during the simulation process reducing survey time from hours to a few seconds. A program, Photogrammetry Analysis for Physical Modeling of Mine Subsidence Process (PAPMMSP), developed based on photogrammetric principle is used to quickly identify the installed observation points and accurately determine their coordinates. The measurement accuracy is well under submillimeter level—an ultra-important advantage as any measurement errors in coordinates are magnified by the model dimension scale (commonly 20 to 400). A physical modeling case of subsurface strata movements and deformations associated with longwall mining operations is presented in the paper to demonstrate the functions and capabilities of the developed photogrammetry program.

Xstrata Copper is extending the Ernest Henry Mine with a 6 Mtpa sub-level cave (SLC) mine being constructed under the pit. The SLC mine will maintain the EHM operation until 2024 after the pit is completed in August 2011. In February 2008, the first cut of the new underground mine at EHM was fired with the start of an exploration decline. Since then Xstrata Copper has continued the development and construction of a SLC mine. During this process a number of challenges arose, some of which had not been anticipated in the planning stages, that in turn has been addressed to ensure the development continued. The challenges have been many and varied and range from setting up the portal area and commencing the exploration decline development in an active large open pit, to management of underground water. Further challenges were presented by the effects of the GFC on investment recommendations, with the scale of the mine varying from a shaft mine to a smaller scale trucking only mine in mid-2009 and back to the full shaft mine in late 2009. The effect was the parallel development of two separate mining scenarios, with the challenge of maintaining commonality for as long as possible to keep both options alive until the final board approval was obtained. In 2010 the RSPT caused further impacts. This paper will describe the current progress of mine development as well as how the various challenges have been met and some key lessons learnt from these experiences.

"Language barrier in a workplace affects workers’ productivity and safety. The objectives of this paper are to: (1) review the various approaches for breaking language barriers among miners; and (2) analyze the costs and benefits of these approaches, and make recommendations on the way forward. The authors achieve these objectives by reviewing the current approaches in breaking language barriers among miners. The review reveals that some of these approaches can be expensive with less benefits. Thus, it is concluded that mining companies should carefully select the optimal approach to break language barrier. INTRODUCTION Multi-national mining companies have expanded their operations into non-traditional mining destinations to grow and meet market expectations. For instance, Newmont Mining Corporation has about 14 operations and projects located in Africa, Asia, Australia and America (Newmont Mining Corporation Operations and Projects, 2015). Similarly, Freeport-McMoRan operates about 14 mines in North America, South America, Southern Asia, and Africa (Freeport-McMoRan Inc., 2015). Some mining companies have also attracted expatriate workers into their workforce. For example, Ma’aden, the Saudi Arabian mining company, in its 2013 annual report states that 34% of its total employees are expatriates (Ma'aden, 2013). Expatriates constitute a key source of skilled labor and facilitate skill transfer. The success of many international operations relies greatly on expatriate performance (Erbacher, D'Netto & Espana, 2006). Even companies that do not expand their operations into other foreign countries still have to deal with language barriers due to changing language demography of the country and the areas from which labor is sourced. For example, the language composition of the workforce and languages used in South African mines is diverse with miners proficient in Afrikaans, English, Zulu, Xhosa and others to varying degrees (Research Focus (Pty) Ltd, 2011). As a result of these trends, most mines today operate with a multinational workforce. This means cultural differences, including language barriers, exist among the miners. Marschan-Piekkari, Welch and Welch (1999) emphasize the fact that language problems become prominent as companies internationalize and grow their operations into more countries. According to a survey by Forbes, language barrier affects operations. For example, business owners acknowledge that language proficiency may promote a safer work environment (Rubin, 2011). A research has shown that language and cultural barriers in a workplace contributes to reducing workers’ productivity, increasing accidents, and hurts employers’ ability to recruit, hire and retain workers (Morris, 2002). Hence, mines are making efforts to break language barriers in their operating environments. Ma’aden, for instance reported in 2013 that 1,506 of its employees received training in English as a second language (Ma'aden, 2013)."

This paper presents methods and results of environmental planning conducted for a proposed coal and iron ore transshipment terminal which would be located on reclaimed land west of Lisbon, Portugal. Oceanographic, navigational, marine, structural, material handling, and financial studies of the terminal were conducted along with the environmental analyses. However, because of the proximity of the terminal to heavily used recreational resources, residential areas, and biologically valuable habitat, anticipating and reducing the environmental effects of the terminal to minimum levels was a very important part of the overall project. The results of the study indicate that even the impacts associated with worst-case conditions would be acceptable because of appropriate pollution control measures and planning.

Low metal prices and increasingly stringent environmental regulations, coupled with the threat of higher governmental royalties are adversely affecting both existing and new operations. Existing operations must therefore be run at maximum operating efficiencies to enable mining companies to survive and grow. Well planned and executed "outsider" reviews can help achieve this goal. Many mine managers and those who direct them resist the idea of "outsider" reviews for a variety of reasons, some valid and some not. Those managers who do bring in the "outsiders" are nearly unanimous in reporting that the exercise in self-discipline was well worth the pain and effort and repaid the cost many times over. This paper makes a strong case for "outsider" reviews and gives recommendations on the kinds of reviews to undertake. The authors draw upon their nearly 70 years combined experience, much of which has been in operations.

Polymer Filtration (PF) Is an innovative, selecthle metal removal technology. Chelating, water-soluble polymers are used to selectively bind the desired metal ions and ultrafiltration is used to concentrate the polymer-metal complex producing a permeate with low levels of the targeted metal ion. When applied to the treatment of, Industrial metal-bearing aqueous process streams, the permeate water can often be reused within the process and the metal ions reclaimed. This technology is applicable to many types of industrial aqueous streams with widely varying chemistries. Application of PF to 'aqueous streams from nuclear materials processing and electroplating operations will be described.

This paper provides a discussion of the various federal and state laws governing water quality as related to mining operations. The specific laws addressed are the Clean Water Act, and the Arizona Mined Land Reclamation Act. Topics that will be addressed are mine water and process water discharges, storm water discharges, pollution prevention, dredge and fill, spill prevention control and countermeasure plan, and surface water protection. Proposed changes to the laws and regulations will be discussed. Compliance strategies will be suggested to prevent potential noncompliance and enforcement.

"Photogrammetry, as a tool for monitoring underground mine deformation, is an alternative to traditional point measurement devices, and may be capable of accurate measurements in situations where technologies such as laser scanning are unsuited, undesired or cost-prohibitive. An underground limestone mine in Ohio is used as a test case for monitoring of structurally unstable pillars. Seven pillars were photographed during four visits over a 63- day period. Using photogrammetry, point clouds of the mine geometry were obtained and triangulated surfaces were generated to determine volumes of change over time. Pillar spalling in the range of 0.29–4.03 m3 of rock on individual rib faces was detected. Isolated incidents of rock expansion prior to failure, and the isolated failure of a weak shale band, were also observed. Much of the pillars remained unchanged during the monitoring period, which is indicative of proper alignment in the triangulated surfaces. The photographs of some ribs were of either too poor quality or had insufficient overlap, and were not included. However, photogrammetry was successfully applied to multiple ribs in quantifying the pillar geometry change over time.IntroductionAdequately measuring underground rock mass movements is integral to understanding how rock masses behave and how to interact with them safely and efficiently. Many modern measurement techniques employed in underground mining environments rely on point measurements, such as through extensometers or borehole relief methods (Christiansson, 2006). These techniques, while commonplace, do not provide a comprehensive view of how the rock mass is behaving. The dynamic changes in stress states underground, coupled with the mechanical uncertainty of rock masses, near active excavations, creates a need for measurement systems which better capture the behavior of the rock mass. Photogrammetry is a technology capable of producing the wide-area displacement measurements required for a comprehensive understanding of rock mass movements.Digital photogrammetry is a means of obtaining threedimensional point clouds from digital photographs. By finding the same point across multiple images, all viewing an object from different angles, the location of that point in three-dimensional space can be inferred. Close range digital photogrammetry (CRDP) is photogrammetry applied to measuring objects or scenes less than 100 meters away (Atkinson, 1996), and is used for various functions in underground mining environments. These uses include, but are not limited to, mapping fracture networks (Kim, Kim, & Won, 2005)(Somervuori & Lamberg, 2010), characterizing fractures (Styles et al., 2010) and measuring volumes of blast rock (Heal, Hudyma, & Potvin, 2004)."

Binary aluminum solid-solution alloys containing various amounts of silver, magnesium, and zinc were prepared by careful directional solidification, and the hydrostatic and X-ray densities were compared. With the exception of the Al(Ag) alloys, the X-ray densities were consistently greater than the hydrostatic measurements, in agreement with earlier observations by Ellwood. In contrast to Ell-wood's interpretation in terms of vacant lattice sites associated with Brillouin zone effects, a tentative explanation based on the existence of solidification microshrinkage was favored. This hypothesis was confirmed by an examination of Al(Zn) alloys prepared by vapor diffusion of zinc into aluminum. The hydrostatic and X-ray densities were now in very close agreement, and it was concluded that the filling of Brillouin zones in aluminum solid-solution alloys does not necessarily result in the formation of defect structures containing an excess of vacant lattice sites. ThE existence of defect structures of the vacancy type in alloys in which the excess vacancies have an electronic rather than a thermal or mechanical, and so forth, origin is well recognized. Examples of incomplete lattices of this type are to be found in the Ni-Al,1-3 Fe-Ni-A1,4 c~-Ni-Al,5 Fe-Cu-Al,= and Co-A17 systems. These defect structures are of a special kind in that the intermediate phases possess an ordered atomic arrangement or superlattice, and in some instances the vacancy concentration may be unusually large, e.g., at 45.25 at. pet Ni in NiA1, approximately 8.8 pet of the lattice sites are unoccupied. Ellwood8-10 has reported similar defect structures in the aluminum solid solution alloys of the Al-Zn and A1-Mg systems and in alloys of the Au-Ni system." In Al(Zn) the (apparent) vacancy concentration rose, somewhat irregularly, to a maximum of about 2 pet vacant sites at 25 at. pet Zn, while in Al(Mg) the (apparent) vacancy concentration increased continuously to 1.7 pet at 15 at. pet Mg. An explanation in terms of Brillouin zone overlap was attempted, although Pearson12 has pointed out the difficulty of reconciling the observations with zone theory. However, the possibility of the effect being caused by the Fermi surface just touching a plane of energy discontinuity inside a prominent Brillouin zone has, in general, been accepted. In fact, Massal-ski13 has interpreted Ellwood's8 observations as confirmation of Leigh's14 theoretically predicted zone overlap occurring at approximately 2.67 electrons per atom. Unfortunately, Massalski was apparently unaware that Ellwood9 had revised his earlier results considerably, and the revised data did not confirm Leigh's analysis. Ellwood's clata were reexamined by the present authors who noted a possible correlation between the percentage defects as a function of alloy composition and the temperature interval of solidification measured from the respective equilibrium diagrams. This suggested an explanation in terms of shrinkage porosity rather than vacant lattice sites, and pointed to the desirability of reexamining appropriate alloy systems using: both Ellwood's method of specimen preparation (casting followed by wrought fabrication) and alternativ'e methods, i.e., diffusion, which might be expected to minimize, or even completely obviate, microporosity. ALLOY PREPARATION 1) Cast Allolys and Aluminum Single Crystals. Al(Ag), Al(Mg;l, and Al(Zn) alloys of various compositions up to 20 at. pet silver, 13.5 at. pet mg, and 30 at. pet Zn were prepared by melting under helium and casting into graphite molds. In the first two systems, the maximum alloying addition was quite close to the limit of solid solubility, but the possibility of transformation to a' during quenching somewhat restricted the suitable Al(Zn) composition range. The alloys were prepared from high-purity aluminum, a lot analysis showing 0.002 wt pet Cu, 0.002 wt pet Fe, and 99.996 wt pet A1 by difference. The silver, magnesium, and zinc were of 99.99+, 99.98+, and 99.998 wt pet respectively. Each composition was analyzed chemically. The as-cast ingots measured 7/16 in. diam and 5 in. length. One in. was removed from the top of the ingot, and the bottom 3 in. was machined to 0.275 in. diam; a point was also machined on the smaller diameter end. The remainder of the original ingot served as a top riser during subsequent remelting and controlled solidification. The machined ingots were now remelted using a Bridgman soft-mold technique to ensure directional solidification and, therefore, a minimum of micro-shrinkage. Alumina powder was used as mold material contained in an alundum thimble, and this crucible was placed in a helium-filled Vycor tube. The assembly was lowered through a suitable temperature gradient at approximately 0.5 in. min-l, and the risered portion of the casting was subsequently removed by sawing.

Seasonally adjusted new factory orders for primary metals declined in January, February, and March, especially in the steel industry. The decline was part of an apparent slowdown for the entire manufacturing sector. Orders for all durable goods, including not only primary metals, but also clay, glass, and stone products, fabricated metal products, machinery, and transportation equipment, fell in January and February. In March, orders rose a slight 0.8%. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, the downturns in durable goods orders in January and February were the first back-to-back declines in 3 years. They were largely attributed to a drop in orders for transportation equipment, mainly auto-mobiles and aircraft, while the small gain in March was due to a surge in aircraft orders. Higher interest rates may be partly responsible for the slowdown in durable goods orders over the past 3 months. The higher rates have also hit the construction industry--another major end-user of minerals. Construction of new homes and apartments fell by a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5.4% in March, following a 12% decline in February.

"At the Kemi Mine, a recent expansion into the Surmaoja orebody required an increase in ventilation capacity. A new ventilation shaft was built with two main fans. The installation is near the entrance gate and only 1.7 kilometres from the nearest permanent dwelling. The main fans were first taken into use as exhaust fans in October 2014. Shortly after the fan installation, comments concerning fan noise were received from the neighbours. The first noise measurements were taken at the main fan installation site by Outokumpu personnel in March 2015. Due to higher than expected recorded values, during late June, 2015, a two-week environmental noise study was planned by the engineers and executed by a consultant specialized in noise measurement. The measurement results were analysed and compared to the requirements of the environmental permit and Outokumpu’s factory standards. While the measured values at the nearest dwelling were within the environmental permit limits, high noise values were recorded at the fan station. A second two-week study will be performed after construction of the main-fan heating station has been completed. Actions taken will depend on the outcome. INTRODUCTION The Kemi Mine is a part of the Outokumpu chain of integrated ferrochrome and stainless steel manufacturing in the Kemi-Tornio region in Finland. The mine itself is a large underground operation with a production capacity of 2.7 million tons of ore per annum. It is also the European Union’s only chrome mine, and at present (2015) the mine extracts 2.4 million tons of chrome ore per year. Safety, cost-effectiveness, and environmental friendliness are hallmarks of the Kemi Mine. Environmental impact produced by the operation of the mine is limited due to the insolubility of the oxide chromium ore, the gravity-based and chemical-free enriching process as well as the closed circulation system of the process water which serves both the whole mine and the enrichment process (Outokumpu, 2015). Importance of the environmental impact of the Kemi Mine is amplified by its closeness to the cities of Kemi and Keminmaa with the nearest habitants living less than 2 km away from the mine site. To show the cooperation with residents the Kemi mine organizes special “neighbour days” for the habitants of the areas closest to the mine. Also, information letters are sent to the neighbours, when changes that may affect the neighbours are being planned and executed."

"The activated carbon used in the carbon-in-leach (CIL) process to absorb gold is subject to breakage. This carbon breakage can be minimized, but it will always be necessary to deal with fine carbon particles, known as carbon fines. These fines contain a significant amount of gold and mining operations generally struggle with the treatment of this product. Since IAMGOLD’s Essakane mine is located in Burkina Faso, shipping carbon fines out of the country was not considered a viable solution due to the logistical burden and legal procedures in place. A benchmarking study demonstrated the complexity of treating carbon fines on site. IAMGOLD partnered with the host government to find an innovative approach to economically recover the gold locked in these fines. This paper describes the new circuits commissioned in July 2016 built to improve carbon fines collection, incinerate the carbon fines and leach the gold in the ashes produced by incineration. These new circuits successfully demonstrate that it is possible to extract more than 94% of the gold content in the carbon fines. This is profitable for the company as it improves the overall mill recovery rate by 1.0% to 1.5% and significantly decreases gold inventory build-up on site.INTRODUCTION The activated carbon used in the carbon-in-leach (CIL) to absorb gold is subject to breakage. This breakage can occur in the CIL tanks, the stripping circuit, the regeneration process or anywhere throughout the pumping and handling processes of carbon through the circuit. Fine carbon particles are invariably created and, because of their small size, present a large specific surface which favors gold absorption (Hilsher et al., 2014). At the very beginning of operations at Essakane, the carbon fines were recovered by means of a thickener and a filter press, but the circuit was undersized and inefficient. Subsequently, a decantation basin was used to settle the fines before the thickener. The settled fines were shovelled from the basin into bags. All these bags were stored in the backyard of the plant. The average tonnage of carbon fines recovered monthly was 23.5 tons with a gold grade at 1938 g/t."

"A 51-story concrete core and steel frame commercial office tower was recently constructed on the site of the former US Gypsum building in downtown Chicago, Illinois, USA The structure foundation reused several caissons from the demolished US Gypsum building supplemented with new belled caissons bearing on silty clay hardpan. Extensive in-situ pressuremeter testing was performed during the geotechnical investigation to determine allowable bearing capacity and better estimate building settlements. Problems during foundation construction along the south side of the building frame required remediation of two caissons. One caisson was supplemented with micropiles, while the second caisson was abandoned and replaced with a straight-shaft rock socketed caisson. To determine the effectiveness of the repairs, the building foundation settlements were monitored during construction.IntroductionIn 2001, The John Buck Company began development of a new office tower at the southeast corner of West Monroe Street and South Wacker Drive in Chicago, Illinois. The site was formerly occupied by the 18-story US Gypsum (USG) building. Mr. Clyde N. Baker, Jr. (Senior Principal at STS Consultants, Ltd .) served as the foundation engineer for USG which was completed in 1962. The building was founded on a forest of belled caissons bearing at elevation -56 Chicago City Datum (CCD). For reference, the ground surface at Upper Wacker Drive is approximately elevation +20 CCD. The bearing material was a hard silty clay, locally described as Chicago Hardpan. The foundation caissons were designed using an allowable bearing pressure of 16 ksf (766 kPa). In 1996, the USG superstructure was razed, and the three-level basement was converted to an underground parking ramp.South Wacker DevelopmentThe 51-story high-rise building was completed in 2005 with a structural height of 681 feet (208 m), and an internal space of more than 1,000,000 square feet (93 ,000 square meter). The typical floor size is 27, 700 square feet (2, 570 square meter). Renderings of the building are provided in Figures 1 and 2. The largest single tenant is the accounting firm of Deloitte & Touche, which occupies roughly 45% of the building space with over 3,000 employees."

The Anglo American phosphate mine is located in the Brazilian state of Goiás and possesses one of Brazil’s most important phosphate rock deposits, with the site being the country’s second largest producer of phosphate rock concentrate. Despite the site having been in operation since 1979, the mining team only started using explosives in 2004 when rocks with greater hardness started to appear in the mine’s geological profile. Rock excavation was previously performed mechanically. Until 2013, only rocks with high hardness were blasted, this following the standard drilling grid that was defined in 2004 without any changes in the blast parameters. The aim of this paper is to show how fragmentation optimisation has yielded positive results at all stages of the production chain, from the mine to the mill passing through an impact hammer crusher, a rod mill and ball mill, operating in close circuit with hydrocyclones.While incorporating the mine to mill holistic approach during the operational integration, the focus was on defining the blasting domains and respective optimal fragmentation and measuring the benefits of blasting in terms of reduction in energy and grinding media consumed in the comminution processes. In the first stage, the blasting team made changes to the blasting parameters and assessed the effects of these changes on fragmentation using computer software and on-site measurements. This generated a database that made it possible to divide the mine into blasting domains. For the second stage, teams from the plant, geology, mine planning and operation departments jointly made comparisons between the performance when processing stockpiles, which only included high hardness blasted ore (20–30 per cent of blasted ore). Changing the drilling grid’s size from 3.0 m × 3.8 m to 2.0 m × 2.6 m for high hardness rock with the presence of silicates resulted in a 40 per cent reduction in the P80 for the blasted material (from 459 to 278 mm), while changing the grid from 3.0 m × 3.8 m to 2.6 m × 3.2 m for high hardness rock without the presence of silicates generated a reduction of 25 per cent (from 270 to 204 mm). There were gains observed from the measurements at the mineral processing plant in terms of specific energy spent on comminution and on the consumption of grinding bodies in the rod mill. "The effectiveness of reagent adsorption onto hematite ore particle surfaces is critical during beneficiation to promote effective selective flocculation and dispersion and increase iron oxide recovery. The relationship between aqueous calcium in the process water and the effectiveness of common iron ore dispersants has never before been studied. The nature of common dispersants was studied in the presence and absence of calcium in the process water. The settling behavior of hematite-rich iron ore at pH 11 was assessed in the presence of calcium and inorganic dispersants: sodium silicate, sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP), sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP) and organic dispersant ethylenediamenetetraacetic acid (EDTA). It was found that inorganic dispersants are ineffective at a pH of 11 without activating the surface sites of the ore particles with calcium. Over 8 Mt were produced using a process known as selective flocculation and dispersion (CCI, 2011). The grade of this ore is slowly depleting, making it imperative that processing efficiency improves. To increase processing efficiency, a complete understanding of the effects of chemical reagents in the process must be acquired. This process relies heavily on dispersants to disperse iron oxides from gangue minerals in settling processes. The mechanism that these dispersants use to disperse the ore and its relationship to calcium in the process water has never been studied. The following extended abstract summarizes the relationship between aqueous calcium in process water and the effectiveness of common iron ore dispersants at dispersing hydrated hematite ore. These tests were carried out at a pH of 11, as this is a typical pH used to ensure dispersion in selective flocculation and dispersion processes."

Fimiston Open Pit is operated by Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) as a joint venture between Barrick Gold and Newmont Mining. Over 110 years of underground mining resulted in the development of nearly 3500 km of underground workings including backfilled and open stopes up to half a million tonnes in size. These voids significantly complicate blasting processes at KCGM, influencing blast movement direction and magnitude. Blast movement monitoring to improve mine reconciliations was identified as an improvement project in the business plan for the geology team in 2008. Following successful trials in 2008 to 2009, blast monitoring and translation of ore blocks were implemented as a permanent grade control program from late 2009 and is now part of the Management Operating System (MOS) of the mine. This paper presents a summary of results from the Blast Movement Monitoring (BMM®) data collected to date. Ore blocks at KCGM are translated primarily using BMM® data. This data is obtained from the BMM® system which measures the movement of a radio transmitter installed in a blast pattern from a preblast position to a post-blast position. The application of the data collected by the BMM® tends to be both mine site and blast specific. At KCGM, an average distance obtained from the BMM® data within a given shot is the primary method used for translation. In the case that BMM® data is unavailable, a theoretical movement vector established from Orica Shotplus with distances gained from the historical BMM® database is used. Data is presented in an ore loss and dilution exercise for a bench undertaken at KCGM to understand the potential effects on reconciliations. Improvements that have flowed from implementing blast monitoring include improved reconciliations when combined with other grade control improvement projects. The increase in liaison between the geology and blast personnel at KCGM has been a significant improvement gained from the implementation of the blast monitoring program. This has allowed a better understanding of blast movement and the effects on ore dilution and ore loss by the mine geology team. In addition, the discussion of blasting tie-in plans between geology and blasting personnel has been improved which leads to more favourable blasting practices that take ore movement into account.

External investment beyond the research, derived from the genuine value proposition of transformational change, funds the pathway for traversing the so-called Valley of Death.

These Leading Practice Guidelines for Mineral Processing (LPGMP) were prepared by the Sub-Committee on Leading Practice Guidelines for Mineral Processing. The Sub-Committee reports to the Executive Committee of the Canadian Mineral Processors (CMP) which is a Technical Society of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy, and Petroleum (CIM) and incorporates those members of the CIM who are concerned with the processing of mineral deposits. The LPGMP covers the involvement of mineral processing professionals, referred to as Practitioners in this document, in providing inputs to the estimation of Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves and providing technical content for internal reports as well as public reports on mineral projects as required under National Instrument 43-101 Standards of Disclosure for Mineral Projects (NI 43-101). The LPGMP supplement the CIM Exploration Practice Guidelines (2018) and the CIM Estimation of Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves Practice Guidelines (2019) which are referenced in Companion Policy 43-101CP to NI 43-101 and recognized internationally. The LPGMP consist of 3 sections: • Principles of Process Support in Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves Estimation; • Appendix A – Use of Supporting Studies in Process Evaluation and Assessment for NI 43-101 Documentation; • Appendix B – Glossary of Terms Relevant to the LPGMP. The LPGMP deal primarily with the description of leading practice as it applies to the mineral processing and extraction of base metals, precious metals, and other mineral products by the application of mineral processing technology. Other commodities may be considered with future updates of these guidelines. It is expected that this is a ‘living’ document and that these guidelines will develop in the future to address the requirements of the mining industry, investing public, and mining professionals involved. Clarifications and changes to these guidelines will be done under the guidance of the Executive Committee of the CMP.

With widespread acceptance in the market place, many engineers are choosing ground improvement techniques to provide suitable foundation subgrade at sites that would have traditionally required deep foundations. This paper discusses the Controlled Modulus Columns (CMC) ground improvement technique and some case histories highlighting the use of this technique for retail development sites. CMC are a sustainable and cost-effective ground improvement technology that transmit load from the foundation to a lower bearing stratum through a composite CMC/soil matrix. The CMC installation is also an attractive option from an environmental perspective because it utilizes reverse flight augers, which displace the soil laterally. This installation technique achieves two goals: it densifies the soil around the CMC, which improves load transfer into the element and avoids spoil and its disposal. Through the introduction of two cases histories, we will present the key benefits of the CMC technology. Each case history will clearly illustrate how a CMC solution can reduce the overall cost of a project when compared to a more traditional type of deep foundations. They will also show how the use of CMCs has benefits that relate to the overall sustainability of the project. While CMCs are an attractive financial and sustainable option, they have also demonstrated that the performance of the system is comparable to that of deep pile foundations. Because CMCs are a relatively new technology many potential users are not aware of its benefits. While we discuss the use of CMCs to support buildings in this paper, CMCs also have been used for a variety of other applications including foundations for tanks, mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls, and embankments
