Refuge Chamber Expectations Training was created by a multidisciplinary team at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to inform miners of what to expect psychologically and physically if it became necessary to use a refuge chamber in a mine emergency. The presentation can be used either for one large group or for individual miners. The training is a multimedia Adobe Flash presentation containing pictures, audio, video, and interviews with miners who have used a refuge chamber in an emergency. It must be run on a computer with Adobe Flash Player installed (refer to the computer system requirements section).

Jointed rock slopes are generally stable, as there is no freedom of movement for blocks of rock. In an open- pit mining environment, blasting opens up space into which blocks of rock can fail, resulting in the common occurrence of slope failure. Prior to the blasting of a trim pattern, the immediate highwall is scaled, where loose rock material is removed by means of a mechanical scaler. As mining of the pit progresses, the height of the scaled highwall from the pit floor progressively increases. These highwalls are never scaled again for the remainder of the pit life, and time-dependant deterioration contributes to these highwalls becoming subject to rockfall and, sometimes, slope failure. This paper documents the development of a South African innovation, a remote-controlled mechanical highwall scaler, a world first for the mining industry. The scaler will enable open-pit highwalls to be scaled from crest to toe whenever the need arises. It will reduce the risk associated with highwalls and deliver on the Anglo American promise of producing safe, profitable platinum.

Since the last Iron Control in Hydrometallurgy Symposium in Montreal in 1996, the Kokkola zinc plant has increased its capacity from 175,000 t/y to 280,000 t/y by installing an atmospheric concentrate leaching process, which has also affected iron control in the leaching circuit. Major changes have been made at the jarosite residue pond; a subterranean plastic wall reinforced with bentonite and cement has been built around the pond. A new water collecting system that is used for groundwater level control in the pond area was installed. With these two investments in the pond area, it is now possible to prevent any seepage flow from the pond into the surrounding environment. Water pumped from the residue pond is treated in the water treatment plant. This paper describes the behavior of iron in Kokkola's current leaching processes. The treatment of the jarosite, the improvements to the residue pond and the water treatment process are also described.

Due to their high amount of stored energy, explosives have been the cause of many serious injuries and fatalities over the last centuries. Despite safety advances and awareness in the last decades, injuries and fatalities continue to occur at mining operations due to blasting. According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, from 1978 to 2001, blasting incidents claimed 106 lives and were responsible for over 1000 injuries in mines in the US. The main causes of incidents found today are flyrock, blast area security and premature detonations. The concerted efforts of the mining and explosives industries and labour and government agencies have greatly improved the safety record of blasting in mines.

"The behavior of laterally loaded step tapered bored piles in calcareous sand was examined by field tests. Lateral load tests were carried out on straight and step tapered bored piles 5.3 m long embedded 5 m below ground level. All piles were installed by augering. The straight piles were 0.2 m, and 0.3 m in diameter. The step tapered piles have a diameter of 0.3 m along the upper 10%, 20%, and 40% segment, respectively, changing to 0.2 m for the lower section. Two piles were instrumented with strain gages to measure the bending strains. All tests were carried out to failure. The purpose being to examine the ultimate lateral capacity and the deflection at working loads. Test results indicate non linear response and substantial increase in lateral capacity and decrease of deflection for the step tapered piles compared with the 0.2 m diameter straight shaft piles. However, beyond a depth of 40% of the pile length, the strengthening of the pile section by enlargement of its diameter had little effect on the lateral capacity and the deflection of step tapered bored piles.IntroductionFor many structures on pile foundations the ultimate capacity under lateral loads is important and may be the controlling factor in foundation design. Examples include transmission tower foundations and fender piles at sea port facilities. Increasing loads on these structures has resulted in piles of large diameter and depth at a significantly higher cost.In this work, the use of step tapered bored piles with a larger diameter along the upper segment of the piles is examined by field testing and analysis on single piles in calcareous desert sands. The lead-acid battery recycling industry was seriously affected during the 1980s by increasing environmental protection costs and poor lead prices. The process is now being repeated in the 1990s causing further difficulties, for recyclers. In Europe, many lead-acid battery recycling plants use rotary furnaces. The Darley Dale smelter, redeveloped between 1984-87, uses only rotary furnaces. A review of options for this plant has been completed and 'concluded in favour of further investment to exploit more fully the benefits of rotary furnace technology.

Aquispirillum magnetotacticum (AM) is gram-negative hetrotrophic bacteria that belongs to a class ,of magnetotactic bacteria that have an ecological niche in marine marches and fresh water swamp sediments. Thiobacillus Ferrooxidans (TF) is a Gram-negative, acidophillic chemoliths that may have similar chemical conditions within the cytoplasmic membrane as Aquaspirillum M. to support growth of Magnetosomes. Magnetosomes are cellular bodies that accumulate under slightly aerobic conditions. Magnetotactic motion occurs in an external magnetic field and depends on the medium viscosity. The Atomic Force Microscope equipped with a magnetic tip shows the presence of Magnetosomes in these bacteria strains. The size, shape of magnetosomes in AM and TF strains are characterized.

The paper addresses the design of the Zhong Tiao Shan Company (ZTS) Houma Ausmelt Technology copper smelter in People's Republic of China. The smelter represents the third copper smelter development using Ausmelt Technology, the first large scale (35,000 tpy blister copper) and the first smelter to use the Ausmelt Technology smelting and converting process steps in separate TSL vessels in a continuously operated process. The project will be realised through the combined efforts of ZTS, Ausmelt and ENFI, the Beijing Non-Ferrous Engineering Institute who provided partial detail engineering services in China. Ausmelt will provide the technology licence, basic and detailed furnace engineering packages and additional technical services including cold commissioning support and hot commissioning supervision.

This paper and four other papers on the MEQB Regional Copper-Nickel Study, presented today at the 1980 SME-AIME Fall Meeting are based on four years of extensive inter-disciplinary research and impact analysis supported largely by the Legislative Commission on Minnesota Resources. This study produced over 180 technical reports, the results of which are summarized in an Executive Summary available from the Minnesota State Planning Agency, St. Paul, Minnesota. Those wishing to examine the many scientific, engineering, environmental, social or economic issues addressed by the study are encouraged to obtain a copy of the executive summary. The executive summary includes a bibliography of all technical reports produced by the Regional Copper-Nickel Study and describes the five-volume, 26 chapter Regional Copper-Nickel Study Report.

In early 2020, the construction phase began for the new complex of buildings for Radium Hospital in Oslo – the leading facility for cancer treatment in Norway. Settlements in the surrounding area, caused by pore pressure changes, allowed for the introduction of an alternative solution for the construction of the excavation pit. The presence of solid bedrock and sensitive clay – the same material that causes major landslides in the Scandinavia – in the excavation pit, lead to a combination of techniques, which were never applied in Norway before. For the stabilization of the clay Dry Deep Soil Mixing was applied to allow safe execution of the geotechnical works. Interlocking Bored Piles with footbolts and Jet Grouting columns, in combination with anchors, provided the retaining structure for the excavation pit. Rock injections were performed to avoid any ground water ingress into the pit. Underpinning of fully operational, adjacent buildings was carried out with jet grouting columns. These works were performed from the basement of the hospital and the ‘ACI – Acoustic Column Inspector’ was used to ensure proper installation of 2 m diameter columns to a maximum depth of 25 m. The buildings were later founded on Steel Core Piles, the most common pile type in Scandinavia.

A Large Earth Cum Rock Fill, ECRF Dam is under construction at Polavaram in the state of Andhra Pradesh in India as part of an irrigation project. The Embankment crest width of the dam is 12.5m and base width is of approximately 136.75m with a stepped sloping height of 27m on both upstream/downstream sides. Once the 1.2m Thick Plastic concrete cut-off wall is constructed below the dam along the longitudinal central axis to avoid seepage, this magnificent structure will be supported on a series of Deep Mixing Columns and Stone Columns that are evenly arranged under the footprint of ECRF Dam forming a smooth transition of gradually reducing stiffness moduli of treated ground from the center of the embankment, where the foundation stresses are high, towards the edges in order to be able to progressively limit the settlements under the dam to a specified allowable limit. As such the required post treatment stiffness in case of stone columns is 2 times of the in-situ stiffness of foundation soil, whereas it is expected to be 5 times improvement for Deep Mixing as per project specifications. Laboratory testing and Field Trials undertaken successfully to verify the design.

Geo-failures from extreme events (landslides, wild fires, earthquakes, floods, etc.) have increased exponentially in recent years around the world and within the USA. When catastrophic failures occur, they usually involve hundreds of fatalities especially in cases of unexpected triggering events, such as large intensity earthquakes or heavy flash floods. Protective actions against identified potential geohazards can mitigate the associated risks and the future occurrences and prevent these occurrences from becoming disasters, targeting the essence of resilience in geotechnical engineering. Imaging and other virtual design and construction tools can be used to identify weaknesses that trigger geohazards and can, in combination with numerical simulations, guide decision making. In spatially distributed problems, 3D visualization and LiDAR-type of technologies are essential in providing geotechnical engineers a deeper understanding of precarious soil zones and support finding appropriate solutions. This paper will present the value of using virtual design and construction technologies though the case study of the Iztapalapa suburb of Mexico, about 20 km southeast of Mexico City. Iztapalapa was developed within irregular topography and has a long history of severe soil subsidence. Following the 2017 Puebla-Morelos earthquake, the town experienced large settlements resulting in extensive damage to the already frail buildings and unregulated infrastructure. The soil subsidence was visualized by mapping available historic and geotechnical data. The visualization helped to identify areas where additional investigations were needed. Additionally, this paper presents a case study of a series of landslides from the 2016 Mw7.8 Muisne Ecuador Earthquake, which demonstrates the advantages of using novel technologies to collect data and create cloud datasets from drones and digital photos to understand and evaluate geo-vulnerabilities in anticipation of an extreme event and during rapid reconnaissance to plan for long-term instrumentation, which can enhance geo-disaster prevention and overall community resilience. INTRODUCTION Iztapalapa is a southeastern borough of Mexico City (CDMX) located within the Mexico Basin (Figure 1). This borough is a densely populated area of CDMX with a total of 1.8 million inhabitants, and has a third of its population living in poverty (Gonzalez-Hernandez et al., 2015) with limited to no access to clean drinking water. Iztapalapa also suffers from high rates of crime, drug trafficking, sex trade and illegal buildings. As the population continues to grow, the already non-regulated and fatigued infrastructure is unable to meet the community needs, especially during and after natural hazard occurrences. The region of CDMX is one of the world’s most seismically active regions that is also exposed to other geo-hazards such as floods, volcanic eruptions, and continuous settlement due to water pumping that has reached 11 meters over the past 100 years (Nikolaou et al, 2019). While the soil subsidence alone has caused significant infrastructure damage in Iztapalapa and throughout the rest of the city, recent earthquakes have also contributed to those damages.

This case history describes the engineering design and construction for the Contractor of a 35-ft-deep excavation for an 800-square-foot addition to an existing sewage pump station. The site posed unexpected geotechnical complications that included deep gravelly soil, a history of local construction difficulties, groundwater consisting of heavy salt brine, and the need to underpin the existing pump station. The project took an interesting twist when the Owner issued a change order limiting the dewatering discharge to a fraction of that required to lower the water table. This documents the interesting circumstances of this job and documents the unusual subsurface conditions in the Syracuse, NY Lakefront area.

The Haines-Klukwan-Porcupine subarea of the Juneau Mining District (JMD) is located in the northern portion of the JMD and consists of the land between the Alaska-British Columbia boundary, the Chilkoot Valley, Glacier Bay National Park boundary, and extending south to the Davidson Glacier and the Chilkat Peninsula and Islands (fig A-I). This area was studied as part of the larger JMD study in a cooperative effort between the Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys (ADGGS) and the Bureau during 1985 to 1988. Prior to this, during 1984, the ADGGS and the Bureau cooperated in a study of the Porcupine mining area and during 1981 to 1983 conducted separate studies in the area. Field work was conducted by foot, boat, truck, and helicopter. Figure A-I shows the Haines-Klukwan-Porcupine sub-area and shows the areas covered by previous Bureau and ADGGS studies. PHYSIOGRAPHY AND CLIMATE The physiography of the subarea ranges from gentle to rugged. Glaciers formed the major features in the sub-area and left "U" shaped steep walled valleys and rugged mountains. The Chilkat, Chilkoot, Klehini, Tsirku, and Takhin are the major rivers in the subarea. The higher mountains are glacier clad and some valleys still harbor glaciers that reach the valley floors. Lush forests and dense brush predominate up to timberline at about the 2,000-foot elevation. Low point in the subarea is at sea level in the area around Haines while the high point is 7,434 feet at: Mount Henry Clay in the Porcupine mining area.

This report describes the results of a study to determine which types of, and to what extent, mining wastes can contaminate groundwater through leaching of acid-forming or potentially toxic constituents. The primary focus of this study was on coal mining wastes, especially overburden spoils and preparation plant refuse. In addition, the potential for contamination by leachates from clean coal stockpiles was also examined. The study approach included investigation of (a) the amounts and geographic locations of mining wastes in the United States; (b) the chemical character of mining wastes, especially with regard to potentially acid-firming or toxic constituents; and (c) the extent to which acid and/or toxic components are leached from mining wastes by rainwater. To evaluate the leachability of coal wastes, a laboratory waste leaching method was developed during this study to specifically simulate the leaching process over a long-term. Waste samples collected during this study were also leached by the EPA extraction procedure and ASTM waste leaching method. Results of the three leach test methods were compared to evaluate their relative capabilities to predict the leachability of mining wastes.

Many, if not most, of today's pollution liability claims are related to events ("occurrences") that happened in the past. This fact creates an opportunity to obtain a large amount of insurance coverage at essentially no cost. Furthermore, in many cases, this insurance coverage is readily available. Scenario #1 For some 15 years, an underground gas tank has had a slow leak. The leak has now been discovered because the gas has contaminated nearby wells. As a result, an expensive $1 million cleanup is required. In addition, a liability suit has been filed for damages due to the contamination of nearby wells. Consequently, legal expenses are being incurred. Are all of these actual and potential costs insured? Obviously, if you have a pollution liability policy in place, the above costs will probably be insured. I say probably because business liability policies are not uniform. But, what if you don't have a pollution liability policy and what if your current general liability policy excludes all pollution liability (as most of them do today)? Under these circumstances, it first appears there is no insurance for this $1 million cleanup and liability suit. But this is probably not the case. You may well have insurance coverage, and you may well have much more insurance coverage than you ever expected. And, the insurance that I'm referring to is already in place. You simply need to find it and learn how to use this insurance - I'm referring to your old policies. In many cases, old liability insurance policies provide coverage for claims made today, because these policies were written on an "occurrence" basis of coverage. In fact, most still are written this way. This means that the insurance policy covers bodily injury or property damage liabilities (as defined in the policy) arising out of' "occurrences" or accidents that happen during the policy period regardless of' when the claim for damages is made. Therefore, for insurance purposes, the key question is: when did the "occurrence" take place? If someone falls and breaks a leg, that is clearly an "occurrence." The broken leg occurrence is, therefore, insured by the liability policy that was in existence at the time of the fall - regardless of when the claim or suit is filed, if ever. However, the answer to this question is seldom an easy one when you are looking at a pollution claim. In our scenario, the tank had a slow leak over 15 years, but property damage was not discovered until now. The question of when the "occurrence" (as defined in the insurance policy) took place has been litigated and continues to be litigated in many courts across the country. But, most often the answer has been that, for insurance purposes, the "occurrence" is the entire period that the tank was leaking (15 years), even though the contamination to the water was not discovered until 1987. This means that the person or company that is insured can potentially use all of its general liability policies (if they are "occurrence" policies, and most were), which were purchased during the 15 years from 1972 until 1987. And, these policies will potentially insure all of the claims and related exposures that arise out of this leaky underground gas tank. Scenario #2 In our first scenario, the claims and expenses were insured by past general liability policies because the claims arose out of events in the past, which, in turn, caused damage. Let's look at another example. In this scenario, Company XYZ has received a request to help clean up a landfill site because 10 years ago, XYZ dumped some toxic substances at the site, which was totally legal at the time. XYZ has not dumped anything at the site since this time. Nevertheless, XYZ is now being required to contribute $2 million to the cleanup of this site. In this scenario, if you had purchased "occurrence" general liability policies 10 years ago, these 1977 policies would (potentially) apply to the current $2 million cleanup claim. And, the reason is that the "occurrence" leading to the 1987 claim took place in 1977.

"What is new in air compressors? A good deal - the designers have been keeping pace with technical developments in related fields and also contributing new techniques of their own. Plant reliability no longer requires bulky slow-speed machines. Even the reciprocating machines, which still provide the most efficient method of compressing air, have been greatly reduced in size and installation cost for a given capacity rating. New materials and fabrication techniques are being used, by most manufacturers, to produce less costly plants in total. Many packaged plants are available, which generally means a more complete assembly for shipment. This type of construction offers savings in handling and erection costs at the site. A warning is in order, however - the extent of packaging in any given plant should be investigated carefully to determine what is included and just what field costs can be realized. A suggested specification has been offered for consideration when studying comparative costs. Rotating machines intrigue many because of their potential as regard fewer wearing parts, higher speeds and hence smaller units, utilizing less expensive drivers, and lack of contamination of the compressed air by lubricants. The inherent shortcomings of these machines - lower •efficiency and capacity control - have been much improved lately, and this type of plant is now becoming quite popular. Noise control, of much concern to everyone, is another development that has received considerable attention.Systems for efficient capacity control and continuous monitoring of compressor operation offer additional reliability and low-cost operation of the modern compressed air plant. Accessory equipment and its effect on over-all plant operation is also considered."
