"The need for large quantities of oxygen for use in metallurgical processes was a major driving force in the commercialization of tonnage air separation plants. Oxygen, nitrogen and argon impact the quality, energy efficiency and environmental aspects of metals production. Cryogenic air separation processes have been used to supply most industrial requirements, however, newer technologies are available or under development to meet the needs of today's and tomorrow's metallurgical processes. This paper reviews the technical features and state of development of adsorption, chemical, cryogenic and membrane technologies. The technologies are compared in terms of plant size, oxygen purity and pressure, nitrogen and argon co-production, product use pattern and back-up requirements. Computer control systems are described that optimize operation over varying load patterns and ambient conditions; substantially lowering energy consumption. IntroductionOxygen production totalled 390 billion cubic feet in 1987. Although current production is lower than the peak of 455 billion cubic feet reached in 1979, oxygen remains the fifth leading chemical product manufactured in the u.s. (1) Metals manufacturing and fabrication accounts for sixty percent of the oxygen consumed in the u.s. Oxygen use in the steel industry consists of air enrichment for conversion of iron ore, purification of the iron in basic oxygen or other furnaces, and for cutting and welding the finished steel product. Nonferrous ores are smelted in oxygen enriched atmospheres to reduce energy consumption and increase capture of sulfur compounds to meet environmental requirements. In the future oxygen usage is expected to become even more important in metals production as energy costs increase, environmental standards become more stringent, and as new coal based processes become commercialized. Oxygen usage per ton of metal in the new direct reduction processes can be up to ten times higher than traditional steel making."

An interactive computer program has been developed by the Bureau of Mines which enables the user to identify the effect of cutting system changes on relative dust generation for longwall shearer drums. The program simultaneously evaluates machine and coal seam parameters, and those parameters which the user can control. The user can change one or more of these parameters at a time to determine their effect on relative dust generation, cutting forces, and/or cost. The program is written in the BASIC programming language. A complete program listing is included along with user instructions and sample outputs. This program is a more comprehensive version of the relative dustiness index (REDI) program described in Bureau Report of Investigations 8979.

Groundwater geochemistry is controlled by chemical interactions with aquifer rocks, and offers a powerful geochemical exploration technique for locating concealed mineral- isation. Techniques are applied for identifying constituents of aquifers using the compositions of their groundwaters, collected from the surface through drill holes, water bores or springs. Even slowly moving groundwaters have passed through large volumes of rocks which surround any sample site. Products from these rock-water contacts modify the groundwater. By relating water composition to the minerals from which the dissolved species may have been derived, geochemical exploration information is obtained for a significantly larger zone than is represented by drill hole rock samples. In this paper we describe some solution chemical tech- niques we are applying in mineral exploration, particularly in areas of Australia where ground- waters are highly saline and contain enhanced concentrations of trace metals. EQUILIBRIUM MODELS FOR SALINE GROUNDWATERS Central to our technique is the assumption that in low rainfall regions, aquifer rocks and contained groundwaters are in chemical equili- brium. Solubility calculations then allow us to predict upper limits to the soluble products of groundwater interaction with aquifer rocks and to identify minerals with which the groundwater is saturated. Whilst equilibrium calculations require input of concentrations of all dissolved species, they are actually based on "activity" of dissolved species rather than the analysed concentrations. Unless waters have very low ionic strengths (a measure of total dissolved solids), activity of a solute is not equal to its analytical concentration but equals concentration multiplied by an "activity coefficent". Several methods exist for calculating mineral solubilities. The ion-association model, commonly used in programs such as WATEQ (Truesdell and Jones, 1974) and later deriv- atives such as MINTEQ, assume the formation of complex ions such as MgSO4(0), CaCl+, which are described by formation constants. "Correlated spectroscopic and cytotoxicity measurements were made on newly crushed silica to find whether the fracture-induced, silicon related (Si-0· or Si· type) free radicals play a direct role in the mechanism of hemolysis by silica particles. The free radical content of the silica particles was controlled through the radical decay, thermal annealing, and boiling processes, and was followed with electron spin resonance spectroscopy. Portions of the same sample were evaluated for their hemolytic potential, employing sheep erthyrocyte and optical absorption techniques. The results indicate little, if any, correlation between the amount of the silicon-based radicals and the hemolytic potential of the fresh dusts, but these or related radical sites might be contributors to silica cytoxicity and fibrogenicity via peroxidative pathways .INTRODUCTIONIn an earlier convnunication (1.) from our laboratory it was reported that mechanical crushing of coal and quartz under normal air atmosphere generates free rad;cals on the particle surfaces, and that these radicals decay with time, hence pointing to a higher toxicity of fresh dusts in relationship to pneumoconiosis and silicosis. More recently Fubin; et al.(2) have also reported the detection by electron spin resonance (ESR) of the formation of SiO· and Si·-type of radicals from quartz particles crushed under atmospheric conditions. In agreement with earlier ESR studies on single crystals of quartz crushed under high vacuum (10-10 torr) (3) and subsequent exposure to air (3), and to other gases (4), these radicals were identified (2) as being formed by the hemolytic cleavage of the Si-0-Si bonds and the reactions of the Si· and SiO· ,radical with atmosphere. Fubin; et al. (2) also suggested that these radicals might be involved in the mechanism of the fibrotic action by silica, either by transforming the particle surface into a selective oxidating agent or as an initiator of a sequence of reactions leading to fibrosis. Earlier Gabor and Anea (5) had reported that lipid peroxidation caused by free radicals on the silica surface might be involved in the red blood cell membrane damage. Thus far, however, no parallel cytotoxicity, fibrogenicity, and free radical studies on a given Quartz dust sample have been reported, except for some earlier work from our laboratory (1,6,7). We now present more recent results obtained from parallel cytotoxicity, fibrogenicity, and free radical measurements on a freshly made quartz dust. The dust’s free radical content was measured using ESR spectroscopy while its cytotoxicity poteni1al was estimated via hemolysis. Hemolysis was employed as the tox1c1ty test because it 1s a widely used method for estimating the potential of a dust for disrupting the cell membrane (8). The f1brotic potential was followed.by measuring the dust-induced lipid perox1dat1on. us1ng linole1c ac1d as a model lipid. As discussed below, the results obtained suggest new clues.to the mechanism of the Quartz-related cytotoxicity and fibrogenicity."

"Two rapid solidification processes for 304 stainless steel were studied: centrifugal atomization (CA) in a helium atmosphere and atomization by exposing argon-containing melt to vacuum (VGA). Positron annihilation and x-ray line broadening measurements of explosively consolidated monoliths were used to clarify microhardness measurements as a function of annealing temperature. Interesting differences in positron response between CA and VGA materials are ascribed to more carbide formation in the CA material than in the VGA material in the 600 0C range. In addition, hot isostatic pressing of the CA material was examined as to the relations between mechanical behavior, pore shape, and relative density. A variable stress concentration factor is introduced into the theory to allow for changing pore shape as relative density increases.IntroductionThere are many potential advantages of rapid solidification processing (RSP), such as a high degree of matrix supersaturation, finely dispersed microstructures, improved chemical homogeneity, and retention of metastable phases, which have been studied extensively. To consolidate rapidly solidified material which is in powder form into useful shapes often requires subjecting the material to elevated temperature for extended periods of time under mechanical forces, as in hot isostatic pressing or hot extrusion. In such cases, some of the characteristics of the rapid-cooling step can be strongly affected. An alternative is dynamic consolidation (1), for example by explosive forming, where the time frame at least is extremely short.In the present work, effects of the consolidation processes of hot isostatic pressing (HIP) and explosive forming in a die are examined. The particular material is 304 stainless steel. The characteristics of both RS and VGA 304 stainless-steel powders were described by Wright, Flinn, and Korth (2) earlier."

Concentrations of He, CO2, and O2 in soil gases were measured regularly for more than a year at a site near Golden, Colorado. Samples were collected from a hollow probe at 0.75-m depth and from a plastic hemisphere on the ground surface. Soil temperature, air temperature, percent humidity, And barometric pressure were also measured. Soil moisture was measured only indirectly as amount of rain or snowfall. Higher concentrations of CO2 in both the 0.75-m and surface samples correlated with higher soil and air temperatures, which suggests that CO2 was produced by bacteria. Lower concentrations of helium in both the 0.75-m and surface samples correlated with higher soil and air temperatures. Rain and snowfall appear to affect helium concentrations. Carbon dioxide concentrations were lowest when snow lay on the ground for extended periods of time. No correlation was seen between barometric pressure or percent humidity and concentrations of He, CO2, or O2 at 0.75-m depth or at the ground surface. No correlation, either positive or negative, was seen between concentrations of CO2 and O2.

10.1 INTRODUCTION This chapter presents considerations which should be applied to heap leach pad site selection, site evaluation, and design, relative to the geotechnics of the site and ore. 10.1.1 General Guidelines are presented covering the topics encountered in design and construction of heap leach faci1ities. Because geotechnical characteristics vary from site to site, not all geotechnical topics associated with a specific heap leach facility are presented, and there may be exceptions to some of these guidelines. The general features of a heap leach facility (from Chapter 1) to be discussed in this chapter are: • Leach pad (including leach pad foundation and liner); • Heap; • Solution storage faci1ities (for pregnant and barren process solutions) ; and • Solution collection facilities (which collect and convey solutions in the heap and convey them to solution storage facilities). These general features are illustrated in Figure 10.1. Liners for these facilities are discussed in Chapter 11. Solution application systems and the sizing aspects of solution storage facilities are discussed in Chapters 6, 7, and 12. The general features listed above are constructed with and overlie naturally occurring materials (such as ore, borrow soils, and subsurface soils and rock). These natural materials are relied upon to perform in an acceptable manner as a component of the leach facility (such as the liner, drain material, and foundation).

With production at Olympic Dam scheduled to commence in June 1988, it has been necessary to install a complete underground ore handling system capable of removing two million tonnes of material annually from the mine. The system comprises mucking from stope drawpoints, truck haulage to underground storage, primary crushing, conveying and hoisting. On the surface, material is conveyed to stockpiles at the Metallurgical Plant. Mining of the numerous special excavations within the system was incorporated into the mine's ongoing development program prior to the underground construction phase. Utilisation of a decline from the surface enabled versatile construction equipment to operate at the underground sites as well as simplifying the transportation and delivery of construction Materials.

The Olympic Dam copper-uranium-gold-silver deposit, located 520 km NNW of Adelaide, S.A. was discovered by Western Mining Corporation Ltd in 1975, and is now being developed as a joint venture between WMC (5107o) and the BP Group (4907o). The discovery of this deposit resulted from the application of a conceptual model for the formation of sediment-hosted copper deposits. This model postulated that the oxidation of basaltic rocks could release significant amounts of copper into solution and that, under favourable conditions, these solutions might pass upwards along faults, and the copper be precipitated in reduced- facies sediments higher in the sequence. The Stuart Shelf province was chosen for exploration because geological interpretation suggested the presence of suitable basal- tic source rocks at depth, and favourable host sedimentary rocks in the overlying sequence. The Olympic Dam site was selected for drill-testing because of the presence of coincident gravity and aeromagnetic anomalies suggesting the presence of basalts and/or mineralisation at depth. This site also had a favourable tectonic signature, indicating the presence of deep crustal structures which might have allowed fluid migration.

In 1984 and 1986, at the request of the U.S. Forest Service, the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral appraisal of the 315,000-acre Lemhi Range study area. This area is located in Lemhi and Custer Counties, about 25 mi south of Salmon, Idaho, and is in the Northern Rocky Mountain physiographic province, Topography is generally rugged with elevations ranging from 5,600 ft to about 11,350 ft above sea level. Since the 1880's, approximately 500 mining claims have been located within the study area; about 400 were current at the time of this investigation. Also, part or all of 12 patented mining claims are in the study area. During Bureau field work, forty-four mineralized sites were examined. The sites had been explored by 80 adits, 14 shafts, and about 140 pits and trenches. At least five properties in the study area have had significant production; the adjacent Mohawk, Grace Phelan, and Snowbird claims had a combined total of 136,000 oz of silver and 67,000 lb of lead; production at the Brown Bull was about 14,800 oz of silver and 115,000 lb of lead; the Portland mine yielded an unrecorded amount of silver. The Hilltop mine, located a few hundred feet outside the study area, produced 125,000 oz of silver, 2.7 million lb of lead, 87,000 lb of zinc, and 62,000 lb of copper from mineralized zones that might extend into the study area. More than 10,000 lb of copper were produced at the Blue Jay mine from workings located about 1,000 ft outside the study area. The Bureau of Mines investigation did not reveal the presence of identified resources in the study area. However, several areas contain mineralized sites and are known occurrences. Some of these warrant additional work to further delineate the mineralization and possibly determine identified resources.

Hilton deposit comprises en-echelon silver-lead-zinc orebodies with reserves in excess of 50 million tonnes. The host rock to the ore is a dolomitic and pyritic shale/siltstone which dips steeply west. The shale/siltstone is deeply leached and porous, particularly over the Ore Zone where the depth of leaching continues down to 440 m below surface, and constitutes an extensive permeable aquifer system containing a large volume of saline acidic groundwater. Initial production commenced at Hilton in 1987 well below the aquifer. A dedicated dewatering and monitoring programme is in place to ensure security of stoping operations and allow extraction of ore close to the leached zone in future years. Dewatering is undertaken from controlled bores from underground sites. Mine groundwater discharge is presently at the rate of 4000 kl/day with plans to increase to 8000 kl/day. An additional 2000 kl/day of fill and service water and water from secondary aquifers is also pumped from the mine daily. Although recharge rate to the aquifer is minimal, studies indicate that due to the size of the aquifer and future extensions to mine development, dewatering will be a life of mine activity. The investigations which have been undertaken to determine optimum dewatering techniques and schedules are described. These include production bore tests, mine planning constraints and computer aquifer modelling. Gravity geophysical techniques have been successful in delineating the lateral and vertical disposition of the aquifer. The mine dewatering schedule, whose principal component is underground mine drainage, is also outlined.

The investigations of the Leningrad ruining lilstitute on this problem are carrying out in the following main directions: 1) The analysis and study of contaminants migration at particular sites of mining development; 2) The working out of theoretical and me- thodical basic principles of aquifers migration tests; 3) The work- ing out of methods of the forcasting of groundwater pollution pro- cesses; 4) The theoretical and uethodical substantiation of hydro- geological observations of groundwater pollution processes; 5) The wort ing out of the measures at the groundwater control and their rational use at the particular sites of mining development. The research that have been carried out by the present moment have covered the wide range of wining and geological conditions -- as from the point of view of specific genetic types of water-be- aring rocks (porous, fissured and fissured-porous), as well as from the point of view of pollution sources (surface waste water basins and underground basins of non-standard water) and the cha- racter of the latter's migration (tracers, physically neutral ef- fluents, heavy or light ones). The combination of specialized mi- gration tests and observations carryed out at uoayi, sites, as well as the following ar~,alysis o:i the data of field study allowed to get useful theoretical, methodical and practical results on the all directions above mentioned, ns the summing up of these results the author proposed the concept of controlled ground :ester polluti on. The Homer City Station, jointly owned by New York State Electric and Gas Corporation and Pennsylvania Electric Company is a three unit coal fired station. The first two units were put into commercial operation in 1969; the third unit became commercial in 1977. Units 1 and 2 are subject to the Pennsylvania State Implementation Plan (SIP) emission limit of 3.7 pounds of S02 per million BTU. Unit 3, having started construction later, is subject to the Clean Air Act, New Source Performance Standards emission levels of 1.2 pounds of 50-2 per million BTU.

Mount Isa Mines Limited commissioned the Heavy Medium Plant in August 1982. The first processing stage using Mogensen Sizer 2056 dry screens, experienced unresolvable cloth blinding problems in attempting to separate fine, damp Lead/Zinc ore at 1.7 mm. A large proportion of the fines incorrectly reported to oversize and hence to the wet preparation screens. This wet preparation screen overloading produced multiple operating and maintenance problems. The plant configuration precluded retrofitting any alternative proprietary screen. An internal Mount Isa Mines research and development programme was established to design and build a screen to achieve the required per- formance within the site constraints. The resulting ISA SIZER screen has exceeded metallurgical performance expectations. A `clean sheet' approach to the design also permitted elimination of maintenance difficulties experienced with the Mogensen Sizer. Four `production model' ISA SIZERS were installed in February 1988. The ISA SIZER screen, now fully developed is available commercially and will satisfy many screening plant requirements.

Real output expanded at a 3.0% rate worldwide in 1987, a slightly lower pace than the 3.2% rate in 1986. The decline was accounted for largely by slower growth in the U.S.S.R. and the East European countries, as well as in the developing countries (table 1). According to the International Monetary Fund, output of industrial countries output grew 3.1% and rose most strongly in Japan, the United Kingdom, and Canada (table 2). U.S. economic growth remained at 2.9%, the same as in 1986. Consumer and government spending declined in industrial countries, while gross fixed investment: rent increased. This increase in fixed investment expenditures could be attributed partly to lagged results of some 1986 developments: the fall in oil prices, declining interest rates, and exchange rate changes. The U.S. budget deficit, as well as the large external deficits and surpluses among major industrial countries, hindered further growth .2 A report from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) indicates that the impact of the October stock market crash was short-lived because it hit economies that were growing strongly, anyway.3 The growth of output in the developing countries slowed in 1987; however, output declined in the fuel-exporting developing countries. These countries have been adversely affected by weakness in oil prices and the depreciation of the U.S. dollar. The weighted average of inflation rates in industrial countries--as measured by the [ ] GNP deflator, was 2.9% in 1987, down from 3.4% in 1986. Prices rose 3.0% in the United States, up from 2.6% the previous year. Inflation for 1988 is expected to remain slightly higher in the United States than in Japan and the Federal Republic of Germany because of recent exchange rates changes and the elimination of slack productive capacity and labor in the U.S. economy. This paper describes an analysis performed to determine the cool-down time of drifts in the prospective commercial nuclear waste repository in volcanic tuff at Yucca mountain, Nevada. Two emplacement methods are currently being considered at Yucca mountain. The reference configuration stores the high-level waste in short vertical boreholes, and the alternative configuration stores the waste in long horizontal bore-holes. After emplacement operations for each emplacement drift are complete, the drift will be closed off from continuous ventilation. Given time, the radioactive decay of high-level waste will increase the rock temperature around access and emplacement drifts. Air cooling may be required to re-enter these drifts. The paper discusses the analysis procedure and computer programs used to evaluate the time to cool a drift to acceptable environmental conditions 50 years after emplacement of high-level waste. Key assumptions to the analysis are presented. The results of the study show that cooling either vertical or horizontal configuration emplacement drifts is possible in a reason-able period of time.

The U. S. Department of Interior's Bureau of Mines, in conjunction with a cooperator in the U. S. A., are developing a new highwall mining system (HMS) for coal extraction in unreclaimed and active contour strip mines. This prototype system is comprised of a computer-based remote control (CBRC) system to monitor and remotely control a thin-seam continuous miner (TSCM) and a 76*m long multiple-unit continuous haulage (MUCH) conveying system, plus other manually- operated support equipment located on the highwall bench. The TSCM and MUCH coal haulage system are both controlled remotely by a single operator in a protective enclosure at an ergonomically- designed workstation located on the highwall bench. Two other personnel work on the bench to operate other support equipment. Full-scale mock-up fabrications were employed in the design of the unique remote control operator workstation. The HMS should allow the safe and economical exploitation of increased coal reserves where they outcrop in hilly regions of the United States. It should also be competitive with conventional auger mining and other coal extraction techniques, with a productivity goal at a highwall site of 20 tonne/man-h. Extensive simulated surface tests of the miner and haulage system should be completed in early 1988 at Bureau test facilities at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. These will be followed by actual coal production trials of the entire system in 1988 at a highwall site in West Virginia/USA.

This report presents a Bureau of Mines study intended to determine if horizontal stress trends exist and if the stresses can be projected for improved mine design in a selected coalfield. The horizontal stresses were determined in three mines in the Yampa Coalfield and one mine in the adjacent Danforth Hills Coalfield of northwestern Colorado. Stresses were determined from stress-relief measurements using a three-component borehole deformation gauge and overcoring techniques developed by the Bureau. A least-squares method of calculating the average rock stress components in the horizontal plane was performed. Physical properties of the rock from the test sites are also included. For the Yampa Coalfield, the maximum horizontal compressive stress in the floor ranged from 363 to 1,956 psi, and the maximum horizontal compressive stress in the roof ranged from 235 to 875 psi. For the Dan-forth Hills Coalfield, the maximum horizontal compressive stress in the floor ranged from 360 to 1,494 psi, and the maximum horizontal compres-sive stress in the roof was 1,033 psi. Results indicated a trend of low horizontal stresses in the Yampa Coalfield that have not impacted ground control conditions in mines less than 1,000 ft deep.

The? use of hydrogen peroxide to detoxify gold mill waste waters containing cyanide and other toxic substances is already an established technology. Recent advances have extended the range of application of hydrogen peroxide treatment to include the removal of complex iron cyanides, the simultaneous removal of cyanide and toxic metals down to very low levels and treatment of barren bleeds, CIP' pulps and tailings pond discharges. Three treatment plants are described here. Each was installed at a gold mine in North America in 1987 and each illustrates a different application of hydrogen peroxide. The need for individual design of the detoxification plant to fit particular requirements is shown by the examples chosen.
