Stabiity analyses of fractured and faulted rock masses require delineation of the position, extent, and orientation of geologic discontinuities. The size of the smallest active discontinuity that may potentially be resolved using the spatial distribution of microseismic event locations is limited by the accuracy and precision of the location methods. At a hard-rock mine in the Coeur D'Alene mining district of northern Idaho, two data sets consisting of calibration blast signals from a known source site and origin time and microseismic event signals were recorded using a stope-wide accelerometer array. These seismic signals are used to quantify various sources of error in event location. Five factors influencing source location errors are examined in this US. Bureau of Mines study: (1) biases of the numerical source location techniques, (2) receiver array geometries, (3) uncertainties in receiver positions, (4) errors in picking arrival times, and (5) uncertainties in seismic velocity structure, including the effect of mine openings. In addition, synthetic data (accelerometer positions, travel-time picks and wave velocity) are used to determine the effect of known systematic and random errors on source location calculations. It is shown that the commonly accepted association of minimum travel-time residuals with the best location solution does not necessarily hold true when there is a systematic error in seismic velocity. Recommendations are made for increasing the accuracy and precision of locations of microseismic events detected under similar field conditions.

In April. 1990 Addwest Minerals acquired the Phillips Ranch sulfur property. The sulfur deposit, hosted by the Permian Castile anhydrite, occurs as two distinct elongate. parallel orebodies within a series of northeast-trending grabens. After completing a positive feasibility study, based, in part. on successful drilling programs by Addwest Minerals and previous operators, the decision was made to place the property into production. Utilizing an existing on-site kasch plant, plus significant portions of the recently purchased Texasgulf Comanche Creek Frasch plant. Addwest is currently constructing an 800 long ton per day Frasch mining facility.

I. Introduction Refractory metals like tungsten, molybdenum, rhenium, tantalum and niobium and their compounds are essential ingredients of our modern technology. Especially in purified form, they are used in special alloys, electronics, optics and ceramics. The processing route from raw material to high purity refractory metals and their compounds includes, as a prime option, the following steps: - dissolution of raw materials. - liquid liquid extraction. - precipitation of high purity intermediate compounds. - calcination/reduction to high purity oxides/metals. Especially in the first three steps, major amounts of chemicals like acids or sodium hydroxide are used and, as by-products, substantial quantities of residues and effluents are generated. The impact of environmental regulations on these by-products and the attempt to reduce or minimize the amount of residues and effluents produced will be discussed in this presentation using Ta/Nb chemistry as the example. The basis of our considerations will be the way these by-products are handled at HCST, a major, and in some cases, the biggest producer of refractory metals (tungsten, molybdenum, rhenium, tantalum, and niobium).

New erosion, corrosion resistant metal, ceramic, and polymer composite technologies are being developed and marketed by Alanx Products L.P. for use in hydrocyclones, pumps, valves, and other applications in mining and minerals processing. This paper will present an overview of the ceramic/metal composite material system and properties developed, which include excellent erosion/ corrosion resistance. Wear data will be shown from a variety of laboratory tests in dry and wet conditions, in aqueous neutral and corrosive environments. Comparisons will be made with a variety of competitive materials currently used in the industries sited. Data will also be presented on field tests with pumps and hydrocyclones in hard rock mining and other abrasive/corrosive environments. Field data from North and South America, as well as Australian mining applications will be highlighted.

Between 1990 and 1991, the Bureau of Mines studied the mineral resources of the Kaibab National Forest to appraise the resources present and to determine the types of deposits, and their location. The study included a comprehensive literature search and a limited amount of field investigation of minerals and mining activity in and near the Forest. Small amounts of copper with lesser amounts of gold and silver have been produced from limestone-hosted, strata-bound deposits in the North Kaibab and Tusayan Ranger Districts. In addition to these small metallic deposits, volcanic cinders, pumice, flagstone, and sand and gravel have been quarried in the Chalendar and Williams Ranger Districts. At least ten uranium-mineralized breccia pipes have been identified in the Tusayan Ranger District, One of these, the Canyon pipe, contains a high-grade uranium ore body with associated silver, copper, lead, vanadium, and zinc. The mine permit for the Canyon pipe has been approved and the mine shaft head frame erected.

With the advent of acid rain legislation included within the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990, a great deal of uncertainty with regard to price, source and production quantities has been cast into the coal market. Powder River Basin and other western coals continue a rapidly accelerating migration eastward, South American coals move into the northern markets, states propose legislation to assist utilities in complying with the new regulations in hopes of maintaining their own coal industries, while some utilities question the long term availability of eastern compliance coal. Any major coal producer must make decisions now to assure their continuing presence in the market place; several companies have adopted a strategy to acquire eastern compliance reserves while others have invested in technology to compete as a low cost producer. This paper discusses some of these options in light of the uncertainties of the market place, from an eastern coal producer?s viewpoint.

"Highland Valley Copper is a large volume producer of copper and molybdenum concentrates. Production is by conventional truck and shovel operation combined with an extensive ore handling in-pit crushing and conveying system.Grade of the two orebodies is low at 0.4% copper and 0.007% molybdenum and this demands a production rate in excess of 260 000 tpd at a stripping ratio of 1: 1. Mining cost has to be kept at minimum levels to keep the mine profitable and thus, it is necessary to keep in the forefront: of technology. As well as the in-pit crushing system, the mine has pioneered the use of shovel weighing coupled with a state-of-the-art dispatch system.Maintenance of the equipment is carried out at the on-site mine maintenance shop with assistance from local shops for engine and wheel motor rebuilds and other large jobs such as those requiring stress relieving. Shovel and truck rebuilds are undertaken by mine crews. Both long- and short-term planning is designed and scheduled in the mine engineering section. Outside consultants are used to assist in slope design, reclamation and blasting technology."

The Los Bronces porphyry copper deposit is located in the high Andes of Central Chile. Ore is mined from several tourmaline breccias and from an earlier porphyry. After years of experience in the geostatistical estimation of reserves in different zones of the ore body, we believe that success lies in considering the evaluation as an integrated process beginning with the analyses of the drilling density and sampling methodology, ending with the critically important reconciliation between the estimated and the actually extracted ore, in general, when errors or differences occur, focus is centered in the calculation stages of geostatistics. However, this paper demonstrates that all the evaluation stages are equally important and require the direct and continuous geologic input to ensure the best possible estimate within the frame of the geologic constraints.

Smelterville Flats in Idaho's Silver Valley has been designated as a Superfund site due to metals contamination resulting from the use of the South Fork of the Coeur d'Alene river as a tailings impoundment earlier in this century. Tailings average in excess of 4% lead and zinc. Selective mining of highly contaminated zones is being studied as one of several possible remediation strategies. The first step towards remediation is the examination of the stratigraphic, geochemical and spatial characteristics of the site. These characteristics are related to appropriate sampling protocols and exploratory sample grid design. Special problems involved in the geostatistical analysis of tailings are emphasized.

Silicon is the second most abundant element on earth, exceeded only by oxygen. Silicon dioxide forms a crystalline structure of repeating SiO2 molecules which form characteristically hard, durable crystals. As a result, crystalline silica is Ubiquitous in the crustal rocks, sediments and the mineral products derived from mining. An examination of the history of studies that identify silica as a human and animal carcinogen is presented in the context of the development of a public health policy in California. The implications for the cost of conducting aggregate and other mining operations in the state are discussed.

6.1 INTRODUCTION A surface structure will suffer damage when the additional stresses induced by ground deformations associated with surface subsidence, plus the original stress introduced by construction de¬sign, exceed the strength of the structural elements. In this con¬text, there are two methods available for preventing and control¬ling surface structural damage: one is to strengthen the structure and the other is to design the mining operations such that ground deformations at the structure site can be reduced to an acceptable level. Mining operations include panel layout and mining tech¬niques. These methods are detailed in this chapter. It must be noted that most prevention/control methods men¬tioned in this chapter are used in the countries where the reference papers are cited. In the United States, the coal operators are not required to take those measures mentioned in this chapter. Some of the methods described in this chapter cannot be implemented with¬out changes in the current mining practice as permitted by laws. In addition cost of implementing those methods are not considered here. 6.2 PANEL LAYOUT As shown in Figs. 2.9, 2.10, and 2.11, permanent ground deformations in a subsidence basin mainly concentrate near the edges of the underground opening, and can be divided into four zones. A structure located in different zones will be subjected to different types and magnitudes of ground deformations. In laying out the panels, Table 5.1 and Figs. 2.9, 2.10, and 2.11 could be taken into consideration. Attempts could be made to avoid placing the structure on a location where the ground deformation to which that structure is sensitive is at its maximum. Therefore rational design of the panel is the simplest way to reduce structural defor¬mations. Panel design involves the determination of panel dimension, panel edge location, direction of face advance, and use of yield chain pillars. A. Panel Dimension Since longwalls in the US employ a multiple-entry system, where rows of chain pillars are left unmined, subsidence over those chain pillars is usually smaller. Therefore, whenever possi¬ble, the panel dimension could be designed such that a major structure or structures are over those unmined chain pillars, be¬tween adjacent panels, or some distance beyond both ends of the panels. At the center of the supercritical final subsidence basin, a structure will not be subjected to any final or permanent ground deformations. In order to create such a condition, the panel width must be such that the structure will be located beyond the major influence zone of the final subsidence basin, the minimum dimen¬sion of which must be: [ ] where L is the width or length of the final mined out gob, t is the width or length of the structure to be protected, h is mining depth and [ ] s is the angle of full subsidence. B. Panel Edge Location Wherever there is a permanent panel edge, there are large ground deformations induced on the surface on both sides of the permanent panel edge. Therefore whenever possible the panel di¬mension should be designed such that the permanent panel edges could be located in the areas with the least impacts. In terms of permanent edge location, it is best to eliminate any permanent panel edge under a structure or groups of structures. If this cannot be done, the panel should be lengthened to reduce the number of permanent panel edges, or narrower multiple panels advancing in the same direction in a staggered manner could be employed. If the structures are located in Zones II and III, the longer dimension of the structure must be parallel to the nearest perma¬nent edge (Fig. 6.1). But in Zone IV, the longer dimension should be tangential to the corner of the permanent panel edge. If the structure is inclined to the permanent panel edge, it will be sub¬jected to twisting and shearing. C. Direction of Face Advance The direction of face advance should be parallel to the long axis of the structure. But if the structure is to be located at or close to the center of the final subsidence basin, the direction of face advance should be perpendicular to the long axis of the structure. Careful choice of the direction of multiple face advance is the most effective way to reduce structural deformation and thus dam¬age. This applies the principle of overlapping and cancellations of ground deformations, due to multiple face advance, at the right time and at the right intensity, e.g., opposing tilts, concave and convex curvatures, tensile and compressive strains are induced simultaneously on the structure to be protected by two or more faces. D. Use of Yield Chain Pillars In US longwall panels there are generally two or three rows of stiff chain pillars between the panels. The combined width of the chain pillars ranges from 100 to 350 ft(30 to 107m). depending on mining depth. In general, surface movement above the chain pil¬lars after the panels on both sides have been extracted is much smaller, as compared to that in panel center. Thus in order to create critical or supercritical width of opening and eliminate sur¬face bumps over the chain pillars, yield chain pillars may be em¬ployed (Jarosz and Karmis, 1986). However if yield pillars are to be used, it must be designed such that it yields totally right after the panels on both sides have been extracted. Unfortunately cur¬rent yield pillar design techniques cannot predict when and how much it will yield. In summary, whenever possible attempts could be made to lay out the panel in such a way that surface structures are located above chain pillars between panels or above solid coal beyond both ends of the panels. In those areas the surface structures will most likely be unaffected, or if affected, the damage is so minor that no remedial measures are necessary. 6.3 CONTROLLED MINING TECHNIQUES Several mining techniques are available for reducing the sur¬face ground deformations of specific types. As the theme of this conference is æRediscover OtagoÆ it would seem appropriate to revisit the era of the gold rushes and subsequent mining industry which rapidly advanced settlement and economic prosperity for Otago, and left permanent reminders in the form of historic mining sites, many of which are now encompassed within the Otago Goldfields Park. I have been invited to give a paper at this conference on the subject of æHistoric Goldfields of Central OtagoÆ. As well as having a working involvement with historic areas through my employment with the Department of Conservation, I have a personal interest in the early goldmining industry of Central Otago as my grandfather came out from Scotland in the 1890s to help construct gold dredges on the Molyneux. My grandfather made headlines in the local paper in 1920 when he believed he saw a New Zealand otter at Island Block near Beaumont - but that's another conservation trail that I will not pursue any further today! For this paper I intend to divide my time to cover the following topics. Firstly, I would like to sketch a mental picture of the characteristics that make up the Central Otago landscape, and the general perception that early miners must have had when viewing this foreign land. Then I would like to briefly discuss the changes and the consequences in the early gold rush to Central. Finally, I would like+ to discuss the establishment of the Otago Goldfields Park, which I will illustrate with several slides.

Surface subsidence resulting from "total extraction" of coal in the Collie Basin first occured in 1987 when Western Collieries Ltd trialled the Wongawilli mining method. Because very little quantitative subsidence data existed for the weak, Permian sediments, a research program was set up prior to the extraction of the first panel. The objective of the study was to be able to predict subsidence characteristics and effects prior to mining future total extraction panels. Attempts at predicting subsidence began using existing subsidence models from other coal mining regions, however, as more site information became available, it became clear that it was necessary to develop a separate, she specific predictive model for the Collie Coal Basin. Analysis of extensive field monitoring data for both surface and subsurface subsidence has produced a series of empirical models which can predict the shape of surface subsidence troughs and corresponding tilts, and strains for rectangular panels and describe the sequences of ground movement from the mine roof through to the ground surface.

Two recent unplanned detonations occurred during blasting operations in sulfide-bearing ores in a Nevada gold mine. Other premature detonations have also reportedly occurred at other Nevada, California, and Arizona operations within the past few years, with increasing frequency. Unplanned or premature detonations can be extremely hazardous to life and can cause extensive property damage. A miner was injured in one of these occurrences. This report, by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, is intended to acquaint personnel involved in such mining activities with the basic causes for these accidents. These causes include the exothermic oxidation of pyrite (FeS2) and formation of ferrous sulfate (FeS04), the exothermic and energetic reaction of the ferrous sulfate with ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (ANFO)-based explosives, and the associated elevated temperatures that can set off detonators and explosives in the boreholes. Recommendations for safe operation by the Mine Safety and Health Administration, the Bureau, and the mine involved with the recent incidents include monitoring temperatures in the blast holes, analyzing for sulfate and ferrous ions, and limiting the time between loading and firing in accordance with conditions in the blast holes. Other procedures for safe operations should fit specific conditions in, the mines.

"During the early summer of 1989, Ontario Hydro removed a concrete portion of the North Channel Dam at Crystal Falls Generating Station by blasting and excavating in marine conditions. Because of the severity of underwater blasting and because the site was in close proximity to the replacement dam, there was concern that hydraulic shock waves generated by the detonation could damage either the new dam or its control structures. This paper examines the data associated with the hydraulic shock waves generated by underwater blasting, and studies the effectiveness of an air curtain in reducing the peak pressures. In previous trials using the air curtain technique, a rule-of-thumb factor was used to estimate that only 10% of the original pressure pulse would propagate across the air curtain. However, this value had little basis in theory. A theoretical formulation of the problem by Karney in 1989 indicated a provisional value of 0.18 for this factor, but was heavily dependent on confirmation from in-field testing. Data provided by Ontario Hydro from an actual blasting procedure indicate that a more conservative value of 0.32 may be more appropriate. Thus.although the air curtain did provide considerable reduction of peak pressures, the data at Crystal Falls indicates its performance was below the anticipated level. However, due to problems with the instrumentation and some inconsistencies in the resulting data. it is recommended that this value be further refined as additional data become available."

The development of economical and effective treatment processes for solid and aqueous waste is a critical issue facing the mining industry today. Cyanide, nitrates and acid rock drainage are environmentally sensitive effluents that require treatment or containment for acceptable disposal. In situ biotreatment processes are an emerging technology (Thayer) for cyanide oxidation, denitrification, sulfide mineral alteration and metal re- mineralization. Biological cyanide oxidation is competitive with chemical treatment processes (peroxide, alkaline chlorination) for process solutions, spent ore and tailings detoxification. Microbial denitrification treats mine waste contaminated with nitrates from blasting, processing or nitrification of the host rock. Bio-alteration of sulfide minerals and metal re-mineralization may present the most cost-effective and environmentally acceptable method of dealing with sulfide tailings and leachate solutions. Field test programs for cyanide bio-degradation and denitrification of spent ore and process solutions were designed and run at two mines. Although the treatment bacteria and the application processes are similar, each waste presented site-specific problems for adapting the biotreatment processes. Some of the site problems include climate, ore geochemistxy, field bacteria production, waste microbiology and application engineering. This paper compares treatment design and results for cyanide oxidation and denitrification in heap detox treatments.

"Exploration in most areas of Canada has to contend with problems posed by glacial overburden. In many areas exploration for gold has been based on the sampling of tills, frequently by deep overburden drilling, and analyses of heavy mineral concentrates. Notwithstanding the significant role that till geochemistry has played in the discovery of some important gold deposits over the last few years, increased appreciation of the nature of the glacial history and stratigraphy and the character of gold within till has led to the recognition of a number of ways whereby the effectiveness of exploration can be improved upon.In order for till geochemistry to be useful in exploration, a number of conditions must be fulfilled, including:1. mineralization, or alteration halo related to mineralization, subcropping at the bedrock/overburden interface;2. glacial erosion and dispersal of a recognizable signature of mineralization into the glacial sediments;3. preservation of glacial sediments containing this geochemical component (trace metal or mineral) at positions subsequently selected for sampling (normally drill sites);4. correct identification of specific till units and associated ice movement history;5. collection of adequately large and representative samples;6. appropriate sample preparation and processing;7. appropriate geochemical analyses; and8. correct data processing and interpretation.While we have no control over the first two geological conditions, and only limited control over till availability, we can control the quality and thoroughness of sampling, sample identification, sample preparation, analysis and interpretation. In particular attention needs to be focussed on obtaining a large enough sample to be adequately representative, an unbiased sample must be collected, together with appropriate sample processing, analysis, data processing and interpretation. It is considered that by modifying or extending existing approaches to gold exploration the chances of exploration success can be increased. In particular, analyses of both the heavy mineral and minus 63 µ m fractions of till is recommended because gold in till may occur in different size fractions."

Several polymetallic sulfide deposits (copper, zinc, f lead, silver, f gold) presently exposed at the surface of the ocean floor are of sufficient size and apparent grade that they will someday be seriously considered as mineable resources. Responsible ocean mining may have some real environmental advantages over land mining, although they both share the same downstream problems caused by smelting and refining. The area of disturbance for an ocean mine would be much less than for an equivalent sized deposit on land around which considerable rock has to be excavated in order to get at the ore. Acid mine drainage, a very serious problem in land ming, would not be a concern in the alkaline and oxygen deficient environment of the deep ocean. There would undoubtedly be loss of habitat for some marine organisms but this could be minimized by mining deposits that are no longer hydrothermally active and therefore support little life. The risk of severe corrosion and thermal damage to the mining equipment at hydrothermally active sites would probably preclude their recovery in any event. The scientific community and environmental advocates should take advantage of the long lead time before ocean mining commences to insure that the environmental mistakes of the past, as encountered in some land mining, are not repeated. In order to fully understand and thereby mitigate the consequences of recovering seafloor sulfides, test mining of a small deposit using the German-designed high capacity television grab, preceded and followed by detailed observations of the mining site from a submersible, is proposed.

Longwall mining is popular in underground coal production in the United States due to higher production rates and safety concerns. Because of the extreme complexity, it is necessary to plan an adequate design to achieve a safe and efficient working place. The proper sizes of yield and abutment pillars and panels can be determined by simulation using numerical modeling techniques. By means of three-dimensional modeling, stresses to be imposed on the pillars, panels, gob, and powered supports can be analyzed. In this study, an initial three-dimensional finite element model was developed and then modified into four different models. Using these models, the numerical outputs of distributed stresses on three different sizes of yield pillars, three different sizes of panels, and two different sizes of abutment pillars were compared and analyzed to determine the most adequate pillar and panel sizes. Progressive failure theory based on the Hoek and Brown failure criterion was used to determine redistribution of stresses in the yielded and failed areas in the longwall mine.
