"LocationThe Ekati Diamond mine is located at Lac de Gras, Northwest Territories.Brief Description of OperationBHP Diamonds Inc. has developed Canada's first diamond mine in the Northwest Territories (NWT), Canada. BHP Diamonds Inc. is part of the BHP World Minerals Division ofBHP Minerals. The project is a joint venture between manager and operator BHP (51%) and the Blackwater Group (49%). The Blackwater Group comprises Dia Met Minerals Limited, Charles Fipke and Stewart Blusson.Production at the NWT diamonds project began in October with the mine officially opened October 14, 1998. The project is situated on an 853 000 acre claim block located in the Lac de Gras region of the NWT. It is about 300 km northeast of Yellowknife and 100 km south of the Arctic Circle. The seasonal winter ice road to the Echo Bay Lupin mine passes along the eastern margin of the project area. This allows road access each year from mid-January to mid-April. For the remainder of the year, the project is accessible only by air.HistoryIn 1980, Charles Fipke traced indicator minerals east from the Mackenzie River area. He discovered indicator minerals in the Lac de Gras area and staked mineral claims in 1989. A joint venture was formed between BHP and Dia Met in 1990, and in 1991, the first diamonds in the NWT were discovered at Point Lake by BHP and Dia Met. This initiated the largest staking rush in Canadian history. The joint venture launched an aggressive exploration program.Koala, Fox, and Leslie were identified in 1992 as potentially economic pipes.As soon as the project's potential was established, it was recognized that an enormous amount of work had to be completed in several areas before a mine could be developed, namely: technical evaluation of the resources; environmental and socio-economic evaluation to procure the necessary permits for the development; and engineering design to optimize mining and processing of the resource and to comply with specific environmental requirements."

"The level of scientific knowledge about the effects of contaminants is increasing and changes in environmental monitoring are likely to allow for the assessment of environment effects particularly to the aquatic environment. This paper provides an overview of recent developments in this area which include the environmental effects monitoring program for pulp and paper operations, the assessment of the Aquatic Effects of Mining (AQUAMIN) program, the Aquatic Effects Technology Evaluation (AETE) program, and the review of the federal Metal Mining Liquid Effluent Regulations (MMLER). The paper also provides a look forward at the direction of environmental monitoring of mine projects in Canada. IntroductionEnvironmental monitoring programs provide a wide range of data to environmental management systems, regulatory authorities, and stakeholders. The data obtained are used to demonstrate that operations are in compliance with regulatory environmental protection requirements, and provide the scientific basis for assessing the effectiveness of environmental protection measures. Environmental monitoring requirements for mine projects are established based on the type of operation, site specific issues and concerns, and the requirements of regulators and mine proponents.The level of scientific knowledge regarding the potential effects of contaminants on the receiving environment is increasing, and in particular with regards to the receiving aquatic environment. Regulatory controls regarding the protection of fish, fish habitat, and fishery resources are being reviewed with regards to their adequacy, and the environmental effects monitoring program on the pulp and paper industry is expected to provide useful data relevant to those types of operations. These developments are of interest to mine proponents as it is presently expected that an environment effects monitoring program will be developed specifically for the metal mining industry under a regulated environmental effects monitoring program as part of the Fisheries Act. This paper reviews recent developments in this area, and provides a look forward on the future directions of environmental monitoring programs."

The net acid generation (NAG) pH method is an important analytical tool that supplements static and kinetic tests for assessment of the acid generation risk of rock samples. This method is useful because it is simple, rapid and cost-effective; it combines features of the static and kinetic tests; and it can be conducted at mine assay labs. The NAG pH test is particularly effective for operational testing programs used to classify, selectively handle, and route potentially acid-generating waste rock. The NAG pH procedure is based on a 24 hour oxidation of a pulverized rock sample with hydrogen peroxide and subsequent measurement of the sample's pH. If the NAG pH is below a critical value, determined empirically, then the sample has the potential to generate acid in the field. The critical NAG pH value is typically within the range of 3 to 4.5, but the exact relationship between NAG pH and potential acid generation should be determined individually for each mine site, based on comparison with results of acid base accounting, humidity cell tests, and mineralogical analyses. Calibration and use of the NAG test for predicting ARD risk at several mines are described in this paper.

Copper is one of the trace minerals essential to life. It is added, usually in the form of copper sulfate, to virtually all formulated feedstuffs and to dietary supplements fed to animals on forage. Over the past five years, an improved inorganic copper source trademarked Micronutrients TBCC™, has been developed, tested and commercially introduced. TBCC is a crystalline form of basic copper chloride. Synthesis is accomplished in a continuous neutralization I crystallization process. In current commercial production, the primary sources of copper currently used as feedstocks are the etching solutions used to manufacture electronic printed wiring boards. These solutions have traditionally been managed as hazardous wastes, but their use to manufacture TBCC™ exempts them from regulation as wastes under the "Use/Reuse" provisions of RCRA. Research conducted over five years at multiple universities has shown that animals are healthier when fed this source of copper and that vitamin losses in feed are reduced by its use.

Retaining walls for the construction of underground urban infrastructures have to be executed considering the impact of a deep foundation job-site within an urban network. Traditional excavation systems, based on the use of grabs and bentonite mud, involve serious problems such as: the opening of trenches adjacent to existing buildings; the cleaning of the working area; the site installation for the production and storage of the bentonite mud; the transport and disposal of soil contaminated with bentonite mud. Alternative solutions have therefore been developed in order to overcome these problems. For temporary works soil consolidation methods, combined with the use of sheet piles, have been implemented, by a combination of traditional mixing methods and jet grouting systems to speed up the operations, consequently reducing the construction time. For permanent works two new techniques named respectively CSP (Cased Secant Piles) and CDW (Continuous Diaphragm Walls) have been studied, applied and tested.

"Mining with blast holes drilled upwards may be done to recover sill pillars, or for economic reasons when the distance between the levels is relatively large. If the rock is sufficiently competent to accommodate large stope size, the distance between sublevels could be increased to as much as drilling accuracy allows. The same drill drift can be used for the drilling of both down holes and up holes. In the case of down holes, the initial opening of the stope (drop raise) is not as much a problem as for the inverse drop raise for mining with up holes. This is because, with a drop raise, a lot of space is available at the toe for the blasted rock to expand. In addition, the raise can be blasted in many shots, thus allowing smaller blasts each time. Inverse drop raises are generally much more difficult to blast because of the limited space for muck flow, and must, therefore, be taken down in a single blast, requiring special considerations in order to ensure a success. A case study of a 29 m (95 ft) inverse drop raise successfully blasted in a single shot at Heath Steele Mines is described. The paper covers technical considerations such as drilling accuracy, hole deviation survey, delay extension and protection, initiation methods and initiation sequence. Finally, a novel method for creating the initial opening called ’slot drilling’ is presented. This method, inspired from LKAB in Sweden, consists of drilling a row of interconnected holes using a special guide mounted on a regular production drill hammer.With a case study of blasting an inverse drop raise of 29 m (95 ft) in one blast, this paper further discusses some technical issues that are critical for the development of inverse drop raises. A novel method for creating the initial opening with a slot of interconnected holes is also presented with the experience acquired at different mine sites across the Noranda group."

"The Stillwater mine is a 3,000 tons/day platinum/palladium underground mine and flotation concentrator located in the Beartooth mountain range in south-central Montana. The site elevation is 5,000 feet above sea level providing a climate with pleasant summers and cold winters. The winters are particularly characterized by very strong winds.The mining methods at Stillwater had been variations of overhand cut-and-fill and some blast-hole stoping. Until construction of the paste back-fill plant, mine back-filling was being practiced using classified hydraulic sand-fill methods. Where higher strengths were necessary, cement was added to the hydraulic fill, however, excessive quantities were necessary due to significant losses with the water drainage from the comparatively low-density fill. There was a need for higher strength back-fill with reduced cement content to augment the hydraulic-fill process.In early 1998, Stillwater Mining Co. commissioned AGRA Simons (then H.A. Simons) in a joint venture with The Industrial Company, TIC, to design and construct a treatment facility to re-process the mill flotation tailing, incorporating the following process alternatives:Produce 100 tph of low strength paste with unconfined compressive strength of 25 to 50 psi,Produce 100 tph of high strength paste with unconfined compressive strength of 100 to 125 psi,Direct all of the excess mill tailing to the sand-fill plant,While no paste is being produced, pump all of the mill tailing to the sand-fill plant,While no paste is being produced and the sand-fill silos are full, direct the mill tailing to the tailing pond.The paste backfill plant was therefore to be designed to produce the two different types of backfill paste as well as have the function of being the distribution center for the mill process tailing .Moderate to high slump pastes would be required because of the comparatively long horizontal transport distances, up to 8,000 feet, and the requirement for a low angle of repose to fill the stope evenly without numerous discharge points."

"LocationThe Gibraltar mine is located in central British Columbia (NTS 93B/9W), 362 km north of Vancouver. Access is provided by 20 km of paved road from McLeese Lake, which lies 45 km north of Williams Lake on Highway 97. Latitude and longitude of the mine are 52° 30' and 122° 16', respectively.The total area of the McLeese Lake site is approximately 1700 ha (4200 acres). This includes the orebodies, dumps, surface drainage collection system, plant site, roads and tailings ponds.Brief Description of OperationOre is mined by open pit methods and is concentrated using conventional crushing, grinding and flotation processes. Copper and molybdenum flotation occurs at an average rate of 40 000 tons per day. Tailing is discharged to an impoundment area and the water recycled as process water. Additional copper is extracted from the waste dumps using sulphuric acid as a leach solution followed by solvent extraction and electrowinning.HistoryExploration by Gibraltar began in 1964, continuing until late 1970, at which time it was announced that the property would go into production. Construction started in early 1971, with initial production in March 1972. Target capacity of 30 000 tons per day was achieved by the end of March and is currently at 40 000 tons per day.Ore reserves as of January 1, 1998 were 184 384 000 tons grading 0.31% Cu and 0.010% MoS2."

The Kunwarara magnesite deposit is the largest known magnesite (MgCO3) deposit in Australia. It is located under black soil plains to the north of Rockhampton in Queensland. The deposit consists of magnesite nodules set in a fine-grained sandstone, siltstone and mudstone matrix. The magnesite is derived from weathering of serpentinite in adjacent hills and transport of magnesium in solution to a Tertiary/Quaternary river system. The magnesium has come out of solution in the active river system, and combined with atmospheric and biogenic CO2 to form magnesite nodules. The magnesite can be very pure with certain varieties up to 98 per cent MgO (LOI free). The deposit has been mined since 1991 and processed into magnesia (MgO) which is sold into refractory, agricultural and other markets. The geologist is an integral part of the small mine technical team. The role of the geologist includes characterisation of the ore through drilling and bulk sampling, supervision of geological aspects of mining and assistance in the optimisation of ore processing.

"A well-considered composite of ZA-27 reinforced with weight percentage 0, 2, 4, and 6% of alwninite particulate has been made by compocasting technique. The elastic properties of ZA- 27 /alwniniute particulate composite were determined by using U1M. The results showed that the modulus of elasticity and UTS of the composite gradually increases with increase in the wt.% of reinforcement. However, the overall ductility decreased monotonically with an increase in reinforcement. The results of these tests· as well as the predictions of several model~ for composite strengthening available in the literature were compared with experimental results. The data observed from Young's modulus by measurements studies were compared with theoretical results predicted by Eshelby model.IntroductionMetal matrix composites (MMCs) have received increasing attention in _the recent decades as engineering materials. Drilling underground can be a hazardous undertaking in many circumstances. Raiseboring and boxhole boring underground could form an integral part of the block caving production methodology and getting the right mix of technical capability, ergonomics and economical viability has been the goal of many machine manufacturers. With the introduction of the Terratec Universal Boring Machine concept, flexibility of raiseboring, downreaming and boxholing has been enhanced by the introduction of a single machine that will perform all three processes. In addition to its technical flexibility, additional safety features have been introduced that will eliminate many sources of injury by mechanising most of the operational procedures. Together with the one-man remote operation, this machine design addresses and solves many of the safety issues. This paper outlines the machine concept, details its safety features and shows the techno-economic advantages for use in the block caving environment. Block caving is a distinct caving method applied mostly to large massive orebodies because of the inherent low costs and high production capabilities. Areas of sufficient size are mined by undercutting so that the mass above will cave naturally. Extraction of the caved ore at the bottom of the ore column causes the caving action to continue upward until all of the ore above the undercut level is broken into sizes suitable for handling (Figure 1).

Mode of occurrence and compositional variations of iron-manganese deposits from seamounts around the NW Pacific submarine island-arc area are described on the basis of on-site description during the Moana Wave Cruise MW9507 and other Japanese cruises, as well as geochemical and mineralogical analyses and dating on collected samples. Hydrogenetic and hydrothermal iron-manganese crusts occur at more than 80 sites out of 150 dredge hauls within a small area of 200x 200 km in the back arc region. The hydrogenetic crusts may have grown continuously at slow rates, but 2-3 times faster than those from the Central Pacific, associated with depletion of Co, Cu, and Ni contents. The site-maximum thickness of the hydrogenetic deposits trends to increase with the increase of distance from the active volcanic chain or the age of substrate volcanic rocks. Also the observed great local variations in thickness within single sites and on small scales may be resulted from post-depositional geological activity at the seamounts such as calcareous sedimentation, collapse of volcanic body and mass wasting,. On the other hand, the rapid hydrothermal manganese mineralization has occurred in place and time during arc volcanism and rifting and is still in progress at modern active areas. The ninety ICP/ES chemical plus XRD analysis show that these deposits are of distinct composition by origin or topographic provinces, but small-scale variation of the deposits of each origin and micro-scale depth variation are not clear.

Dr Claude Martin,Director General,WWF International The four quotes above well illustrate the challenges faced by companies and conservationists in attempting to achieve the societal goal of sustainable development. That this aspirational goal itself is far from clearly defined, although it has been widely accepted and endorsed by governments, business and civil society, exacerbates the challenges. Sustainable development has as its central thesis the integration of environmental, social and economic policy. Its attainment by business has been described John Elkington (1998) as the pursuit of the ætriple bottom lineÆ - the achievement of social and environmental targets, in addition to the traditional economic bottom line. It is self-evident that business is both competent and comfortable defining and measuring economic performance and reporting that performance to internal and external audiences. As long as information has been prepared according to the established standards of measurement and reporting of economic performance, all audiences can have confidence in its accuracy. Business does not enjoy the same competence and comfort with regard to social and environmental performance. This is no startling condemnation of business, any more than it is a criticism of governments, non-government organisations (NGOs) or academia. It is a statement of fact that the tools to allow for credible definition and reporting against the other two components of the ætriple bottom lineÆ have yet to be fully developed and are, therefore, far from being widely accepted. Crucial to achieving sustainability is the ability to measure progress toward the goal. The task is to develop means to define appropriate performance standards and to credibly measure and report company environmental and social performance against those standards.

Electroless nickel (EN) coatings are widely used in the manufacture of automotive parts, providing uniform coating, corrosion protection, wear resistance and lubrication. In contrast to EN plating benefits, the disposal and treatment of waste solutions can cause many difficulties. The use of electrochemical treatment technology greatly improves _the operation of the main wastewater treatment process and reduces operation costs. A new, state-of-the-art job shop in the Chicago area, which provides EN plating for the automotive industry, has installed a large separated electrolytic cell for the treatment of spent EN solution (from dumps and wastewater). The waste/wastewater is handled by the separated electrolytic cell, batch treatment system, filter press and neutralization station. The implementation of modem electrolytic technology and auxilliary equipment provides an effective waste treatment process that meets environmental compliance criteria.

"Surface conditioning (also referred as etching) of plastics prior to metallization is generally conducted with sulfuric I chromic acid solutions. Although these baths perform well technically, the presence of Cr (VI) imposes serious operating problems of an environmental nature. The present work reports ·the results of a study of surface conditioning o(ABS using solutions based. on sulfuric acid, with hydrogen peroxide and/or nitric acid, replacing chromic acid, as oxidants. Process performance was evaluated by SEM and by the uniformity and adherence of electroless nickel coatings applied on selected conditioned samples. The results showed that the evaluated types of solutions could be optimized to perform as well as the chromic-based baths, with a much superior environmental quality.IntroductionMetallization of plastics is normally undertaken for either decorative or functional purposes. Through metallization, the specific properties of plastics such as light weight, design flexibility, and low-cost of manufacturing are enhanced by the addition of properties usually associated with metals. These include reflectiveness, abrasion resistance, electrical conductivity, and a variety of decorative effects (1).The available processes that can be used for metallization of plastics are vacuum metallization or vapoµr deposition; indirect metallization and plating (1). Plating can be sub-divided into electroless plating and electroplating. In electroless plating, metal ions in aqueous solution are deposited on the .activated plastic surface by oxi-reduction reactions without the aid of an external electric potential, forming a thin metallic layer. This electroless deposited film has two functions: (a) it provides an electrically conductive substrate that allows further coating by electroplating; and (b) provides a secure bond between the plastic substrate and the electroplated layer (1,2). In case the electroless metallic part requires an additional layer for finishing purposes, or just an increase in thickness, the part can be additionally electroplated with a· variety of metals - in most cases those are copper, nickel or chromium (3)."

Seismic tomographic imaging, based on the same principles as a medical CAT Scan (Computer-Aided-Tomography). has been used for many years in the oil industry for large-scale subsurface stratigraphic characterization. and has most recently been applied to various structure- and stress-related problems in the coal industry. New developments in signal processing have greatly enhanced the speed, resolution, and range of applications of topographic imaging in underground settings, and recent innovations in data acquisition hardware have further increased data reliability and repeatability. Whereas past structure mapping applications relied on Seismic velocity and/or attenuation tomopraphy within an enclosed seismic source gram receiver array, recent developments in "True Reflective Tomography- (TRT TM) have expanded the application of this technology considerably. For example, in-seam TRT TM seismic reflection tray now he used to image structure, and/or old workings from one general location in the mine face areas of mains and panel developments) well ahead of planned developments largely eliminating the need to probe-hole drill on regular intervals. This new reflective technology bas also been combined with traditional cross-hole seismic tomography-providing a comprehensive, powerful tool for velocity attenuation. and reflective imagine utilizing the same source/receiver array data sets (borehole-to-borehole. borehole-to-entry and entry-to-entry). These new developments in data acquisition and image processing have greatly expanded the variety of applications for tomographic site characterization allowing the mine operator considerable flexibility to cost-effectively characterize previously inaccessible areas of the property. This paper presents examples of 2-D and 3-D .seismic topographic imaging applied to (1) the location of old works in Appalachian room-and-pillar operations and (2) the identification of anomalous zones ahead of mining/tunneling developments these applications demonstrate the state-of-the-art in seismic ground imaging using velocity, attenuation. aril reflection techniques land combinations thereon, and further illustrate the flexibility of data acquisition from a variety of tinning arid tunneling settings. Recent examples are presented from projects in the United States and Europe.

To produce low-carbon (<30 ppm) steel in the tank degassing process, a ladle of steel with an oxidizing slag is placed in a vacuum tank equipped with bottom bubbling. The kinetics of this process are slow compared to the more prevalent RH degassing process, providing the impetus for the present work. There are several aspects to this work: water models of the fluid flow in the ladle; simulation of the decarburization (CO evolution) with C02 desorption in water; pilot-plant (60 kg) studies of the decarburization kinetics; mathematical modelling of the fluid flow in the ladle; mathematical models for each of the kinetic sites (plume, top slag and auto-nucleation); and full-scale trials. The results show that during the refining cycle the contribution from each reaction site changes, suggesting avenues for reducing cycling time and final carbon contents.

The mobile telecommunications sector is one of the fastest growing industries worldwide. However, increasingly stringent environmental regulations are placing pressure on manufacturers to accept responsibility for end of life products. The companies are therefore exploring avenues to recover the valuable components contained within the mobile telecommunications devices thus reducing the quantities of toxic components going to landfill. Batteries used to power the devices, are typically based on either nickel-cadmium, nickel metal hydride, or lithium ion cells. They contain toxic metals including nickel, cadmium, lithium, potassium, lead, and cobalt in a complicated arrangement of battery cells surrounded by a metals then plastic casing. The Ausmelt Catalytic Waste Converter (CWC) for waste treatment and recycling is well suited to processing all three mobile phone battery types for the recovery of valuable metals in marketable products that can be recycled to industry without turning out harmful levels of toxic emissions. Ausmelt recently demonstrated the capabilities of its CWC by continuously processing 4.5 tonnes of nickel-cadmium batteries. Using Ausmelt's pilot plant facility in Australia, the nickel-cadmium batteries were processed to produce a nickel iron sulphide (matte), a cadmium fume and a final slag which satisfied CS toxicity leach test criteria and was safe f<~r disposal to landfill. This paper explores the commercial development of the Ausmelt CWC for treating each of the three battery types in light of (a) the outcomes of the recent demonstration, and (b) the current and expected future availability of batteries for processing.

"B-C-N nanotubes prepared by a flush evaporation method using a de arc plasma were mainly characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electron energy· loss spectroscopy (EELS). The nanotubes obtained· were divided into three types such as carbon boron nitride and carbon or carbon nanotubes surrounded with boron nitride nanotubes. These types of nanotubes were obtained at higher temperatures than about 3000 K, however, these were not formed at lower temperatures than about 3000K. On the other hand, 11anocapsules were· formed at all the experimental temperatures and nanocapsules with a homogeneous phase were obtained at lower temperatures than about 3000 K. The effect of additives on the formation of B-C-N nanotubes was not clear. Based on these experimental data depending on temperatures and corresponding microstructures, the formation mechanisms of both nanotubes and nanocapsules were briefly .discussed 1 Introduction As reported previously, nano tubes have unique electrical properties1, 3) The preparations of nallotupes have been usually carried out by flush evaporation methods using either a de arc plasma or a laser4 -5) By these methods the reaction rate is so rarid that we have no data of intermediate products between initial raw materials and. final products of nanotubes 6-9). So, the formation mechanisms of nanotubes have been mainly speculated only from the microstructures of resultant nanoiubes. In order to have more reliable formation mechanisms, it is particularly important to have the information of intermediate products at the corresponding temperatures. From the viewpoints, we have studied about the effects of temperatures on the preparation of nanolubes. High productivity of the equipment employed is one of the key factors in reducing production cost in mining. One of the best ways to achieve it is an increase in availability. In order to identify the most adverse factors affecting it, reliability and maintainability analysis ought to be done. If its results are to be conclusive, a sufficient amount of credible and consistent data is indispensable. Following the experience from field studies done in underground mines, this paper discusses the current status of failure and maintenance reporting, as well as problems encountered. It exposes the importance of adequate data collection on failures and downtime as well as it reviews the benefits of analysis based on such material. The question of benchmarking with regards to mining equipment performance is also addressed. The paper concludes with some recommendations on data collection and processing, as well as stresses the need to standardize the most important reliability/ maintenance notions throughout the mining industry and to conceive appropriate performance measures.
