"Ground control research in underground coal mines has been ongoing for over 50 years. One of the most problematic issues in underground coal mines is roof failures associated with weak shale. This paper will present a historical narrative on the research the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health has conducted in relation to rock mechanics and shale. This paper begins by first discussing how shale is classified in relation to coal mining. Characterizing and planning for weak roof sequences is an important step in developing an engineering solution to prevent roof failures. Next, the failure mechanics associated with the weak characteristics of shale will be discussed. Understanding these failure mechanics also aids in applying the correct engineering solutions. The various solutions that have been implemented in the underground coal mining industry to control the different modes of failure will be summarized. Finally, a discussion on current and future research relating to rock mechanics and shale is presented. The overall goal of the paper is to share the collective ground control experience of controlling roof structures dominated by shale rock in underground coal mining.INTRODUCTIONThe National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH) Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR), formerly the United States Bureau of Mines, has been conducting research on ground control safety for over 50 years. The overall objective of the research is to reduce underground mining injuries and fatalities by characterizing roof conditions, improving roof support performance and application, and optimizing pillar design and mine layout. Underground mining has one of the highest fatal injury rates of any industry in the United States—more than five times the national average compared to other industries (CDC, 2012). Roof fall injuries can be severe, resulting in lacerations, bone fractures, amputations, and death. Non-injury roof falls can also be problematic, resulting in lost production, delays, blockage of primary escape routes, disruption to ventilation, and hazardous rehabilitation conditions.Coal mining is increasingly subject to more adverse geological conditions. Weak roof can be found in all coal mining regions in the United States, but there are a few geographically isolated areas with higher roof fall rates contributed to by particularly poor roof conditions, as represented in Figure 1. This figure shows that when non-injury roof fall rates are normalized to production, the Illinois Basin and Central/Northern Appalachia regions have the highest rates. These isolated regions have inherently weak roof even before mining has occurred, and this roof is easily damaged during the mining process. The weak roof in these regions consists primarily of shale. Shale can be troublesome in underground coal mining because it can appear massive but easily splits along bedding planes and is often moisture-sensitive."

"When hard times strike in the mining cycle, sites tighten their belts and focus on lowering their unit costs. Lower unit costs can be achieved by reducing expenditure, increasing production, or by a combination of both. Faced with these requirements, site personnel must turn to areas where they can focus their effort for maximum return. For many sites, both in Canada and overseas, focusing on improving flotation cell maintenance is one of the areas where gains can be made for minimum outlay. Due to resource limitations and/or lack of equipment understanding, maintenance on many sites is only conducted on a reactive basis, once equipment fails. This paper will promote the idea that mineral processors should become more familiar with their equipment so they can ensure that the plant’s ability to produce is not compromised. By better understanding the flotation equipment and ensuring the critical components are maintained, it should be possible to unlock value in an operation. Flotation equipment inspections will be discussed in detail, including key items to look for during these inspections. Potential approaches for predicting wear and change-out time for flotation equipment components will be also demonstrated. An example of one approach used at a South African nickel site will be given.INTRODUCTIONWith metal prices decreasing and operating costs rising, concentrator operators are looking for ways to improve their bottom line. Lower unit costs can be achieved by reducing expenditure, increasing production, or by a combination of both. To meet the expectation of shareholders, mineral processors must turn to areas where they can get the best return for their efforts. One area where there is a large opportunity for improvement is in the maintenance of flotation equipment.On many mine sites, both domestically and around the world, it is quite common to see the philosophy applied of repairing equipment only once it has failed. Though some sites have advanced enterprise management systems and monitoring programs, in the authors’ experience, the decision on flotation equipment maintenance is rarely made on a proactive basis. Two common trends that are evident in the mining industry are that operations are under pressure to keep the plant producing, and maintenance managers generally have very strict budget targets to meet. In addition to these factors, few sites have a good understanding of the financial implications of running with worn or broken flotation equipment. Knights, Jullian and Jofre (2006) summarize this situation well, stating that the lack of correlation between some commonly used maintenance performance measures and key business drivers can lead to maintenance being seen only as a cost center (that needs to be reduced) rather than a tool for productivity improvement."

"INTRODUCTION The Central District of the Florida phosphate industry is located in southwest Polk and southeast Hillsborough Counties, with the Southern Extension lying in western Hardee, eastern Manatee and northwest De Soto Counties. (Lawver, 1983) Figure 1 shows the major phosphate formations in Florida. Almost all Florida phosphate production has been in the Central district with additional production from a mine in the Northern District. The Central District is comprised of the Bone Valley Deposit, a relatively thin layer of high grade ore which has been the main source of phosphate mining for decades, and the Hawthorn formation, a thick but low grade formation which covers most of peninsular Florida. (Lawver, 1983) Florida phosphate producers use the Crago process where calcium phosphate is floated with anionic, fatty acid type collectors followed by cationic reverse flotation of silica with amine type collectors. The phosphate matrix is put through various size separation techniques to obtain a typical -28 Mesh (< 700 µm) particle size for fine flotation and a -16 mesh (< 1190 µm) to +28 mesh (> 700 µm) particle size for coarse flotation. In some cases this coarse fraction can be sent to shipping as an intermediate product. The +16 mesh (>1190 µm) to – ¾“ (19 mm) fraction is sent to shipping as a final product called pebble. Figure 2 demonstrates a simplified diagram of the mining and processing of calcium phosphate (matrix) through a Central Florida mine. Particle size and mineralogy are important considerations in the Crago process for two main reasons, the mass of the particle and the particle surface area. Both of which are dependent on the coordination of the anionic collector to available Ca2+ sites on the minerals’ surface. The increased surface area, and available Ca2+, of the smaller apatite particles will allow for more fatty acid molecules to coordinate than the larger particles, with a lower availability of Ca2+. So, the larger particle would require more collector to be introduced in the system to sufficiently cover the apatite particles to produce a surface sufficiently hydrophobic to attach to air bubbles allowing flotation to occur. (Guan, 2009) The Bone Valley deposit has very favorable flotation characteristics when compared to other mining ores around the world. The matrix of the Bone Valley is relatively high grade, BPL (Bone Phosphate in Lime) values typically range from 6-18%, BPL recoveries, from such a matrix, can often be achieved above 85+% with fatty acid based collectors dosed below 1 #/ton. As mentioned, the sizing is an important step as there is also high grade apatite in the +16 mesh (1mm) that is screened to a final product grade, 60-65% BPL. The lack of quartz in the larger size fraction has allowed the Central District to produce high quality, low cost phosphate product, called pebble, through effective screening with no further beneficiation. "In Belgium, Boom Clay is considered as one of the potential host formations for the disposal of the High Level radioactive Waste (HLW). The URL HADES at 223 m depth at Mol site was constructed in order to study the feasibility of HLW disposal in Boom Clay. Since 1995, the URL R&D programme has focused on large scale demonstration tests like the PRACLAY experiment.The PRACLAY in-situ experiments include a set of three tests: The gallery and crossing test, PRACLAY Heater test and PRACLAY seal test. The main aim of the Heater test is to study at a large scale the thermal impact of a HLW repository on the host rock. The test is housed in the PRACLAY gallery. A hydraulic seal, made of compacted swelling and low permeable bentonite annular ring was installed at the intersection between the heated and the non-heated part of the gallery. The primary objective of the seal is to provide undrained hydraulic boundary conditions for the Heater Test.The PRACLAY gallery was constructed in 2007 and the hydraulic seal was installed in 2010. The bentonite is hydrated by natural and artificial process. The swelling, total pressure and pore pressure of the bentonite are continuously measured and analysed by numerical simulations to get a better understanding of this hydration processes. The performance of the seal is tested systematically by means of gas injection breakthrough tests and permeability tests at interface bentonite / Boom Clay and in the Boom Clay around the seal.The PRACLAY Heater will be turned on at the end of Oct. 2014, since a sufficient seal swelling has been attained to fulfill its role for the PRACLAY Heater test. This paper will focus on the PRACLAY Seal test: How we understand the process behind the hydration of the bentonite and how we test the performance of the bentonite seal."

"SynopsisScattered mining was practised on Kusasalethu Mine (previously Elandsrand Gold Mine) prior to 1998, but at deeper mining levels it was no longer feasible, since it would have resulted in unacceptably high stress levels and energy release rates. Longwall mining was not adopted at these depths as the mine required a more flexible mining method owing to the highly variable grade and the presence of geological structures. A mining method was developed that consisted of dip stabilizing pillars for regional support, as well as bracket pillars to clamp geological structures. A strict sequence of extraction was followed and this, together with the particular layout, was called the ‘sequential grid mining method’. This method addressed two key problems, namely negotiating adverse geology and the erratic grade of the Ventersdorp Contact Reef (VCR) orebody. However, a significant drop in production rates resulted in the need for alternatives and improvements to the original mine design. Modifications to the design were proposed in order to increase production rates, and an investigation to consider the rock engineering implications of these modifications was conducted. The study indicated that the modified method, called the ‘multi-raise mining method’, appears to be feasible and might address some of the production problems that were experienced with the original sequential grid design. An analysis of actual seismic data showed no significant differences between the original sequential grid mining and the implemented multi-raise mining. The numerical modelling of the mining layouts showed slightly higher interim energy release rates (ERRs) and average pillar stress (APS) levels during the extraction process. The final values are nevertheless identical to that of the original sequence. The study also investigated the use of a modelled moment method to analyse future seismic trends. The study illustrated that the expected seismic trends will be very similar for the multi-raise method compared to the original sequential grid mining method. This study is nevertheless considered of a preliminary nature and ongoing monitoring and analysis of seismic data at the mine is required to verify the response of the rock mass to the modified sequence and increased extraction rate. In particular, future work needs to investigate the effect of mining rate (advance rates in individual panels as well as volume of mining in particular raise lines) on the level of seismicity."

Many large rock avalanches and/or landslides have occurred in mountainous regions around the world. Their occurrences are normally rapid and unexpected, which can cause disasters. They have been investigated extensively by many researchers and engineers since the 1903 Frank Slide on Turtle Mountain, Alberta, Canada. They are one of the most peculiar phenomena because the rock debris of more than one million m3 can move over the horizontal distances exceeding those expected from conventional friction physics. This paper presents a gas cause hypothesis responsible for the large rock avalanches. It is the migration and expansion of a certain amount of highly pressurized and dense natural gas mass from deep geological grounds into the mountainous rock mass slopes. The natural gas with high pressure and density can escape from the deep geological ground and flow through faults, weak zones and/or porous channels into the rock mass forming a mountainous slope. The rock mass forming the slope has the high tensile and compressive strength and can resist the initial loading of the gas mass migrated into and stored in their voids, pores, holes, gaps, openings, apertures and cavities. With time, more and more gas mass from deep ground can migrate into and stored in the slope rock mass. Eventually, the peak equilibrium of forces and deformation reaches. The expanding power of the gas in the slope rock mass would instantly and rapidly break, erupt and/or explode them. The compressed and dense gas mass would mix, flow and expand together with the broken rock debris mass and continue offering their remaining expanding powers to the moving and sliding debris mass. As a result, the rock debris of large volume can reach the runout distances exceeding those expected from the conventional friction physics. The gas would escape into the sky and the solid rock debris would remain on the ground spreading over large ground area. The 1903 Frank Slide is examined to show this gas cause and mechanism in mountainous regions.

The Mitchell Creek Landslide is a large, structurally controlled, complex bedrock instability located in northwestern British Columbia. Characterization of the landslide using aerial photograph, exploration geology, and geotechnical investigation data has been completed allowing the development of a three dimensional conceptual model of the landslide domains and slope behaviour. Three domains have been identified in the landslide, from top to bottom: the Sliding domain, a relatively intact slab slowly sliding into the valley; the Transition domain, located in the mid slope of the landslide and showing evidence of significant extension and continuing to subside and displace into the valley; and a Toppling domain, at the toe of the landslide in an area of overturned foliation. Movement is greatest in the Toppling domain, with long term estimated rates of movement up to 4 times that of the Sliding domain; the Transition domain exhibits the greatest range of displacement rates, with average long term values approximately double the slower Sliding domain. This paper documents the results of numerical modelling of the Mitchell Creek Landslide with variation in geomechanical properties, basal rupture surface configuration, structural fabric, and pore water pressure conditions. The locations of internal shear surfaces within the landslide have been estimated from surface scarps, structural fabric orientation, and borehole monitoring data. The performance of each numerical model was evaluated against observed behaviour of the landslide. The configuration and properties of the basal rupture surface were identified as critical to model behaviour, as was spacing and location of internal structures.

"The Central Subway is Phase 2 of the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency’s (SFMTA) Third Street Light Rail project and will extend the existing Phase 1 initial operating segment from its current connection to the Embarcadero line at Fourth and King streets along Fourth Street to Market Street, under the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) and Muni Metro tunnels and then north beneath Stockton Street to Chinatown (Fig. 1).Total new track to be constructed as part of the Phase 2 work consists of approximately 734 m (2,410 ft) of surface track and 2,636 m (8,650 ft) of tunnels. The tunnels were constructed as twin, singletrack bores by two tunnel boring machines (TBMs) (Johnson, 2014) moving north from the southern end of the launch box under the I 80 freeway between Bryant and Harrison streets. North of Chinatown Station the TBMs continued another approximately 683 m (2,240 ft) to a retrieval shaft near Columbus Ave. at Washington Square. The project also includes five cross passages to connect the two tunnels, and three underground stations (the Yerba Buena/ Moscone Station, Union Square/Market Street Station and Chinatown Station.)Excavation of the twin tunnels was performed with two TBMs, with both TBMs driving northward from the launch box. TBM excavation was performed such that the location of the machines was staggered to separate the active excavation faces by a minimum of 91 m (300 ft) between headings. This minimum separation was maintained until the first TBM arrived at the retrieval shaft plug, at which time the separation requirement was relaxed.Excavation began with the “southbound” (SB) tunnel which will ultimately accommodate the southbound TBM light rail trains followed by the second TBM in the “northbound” (NB) tunnel. With the completion of the drives in June 2014, cross passage excavation then began and was completed in April 2015. Overall, construction of the Central Subway tunnels was a success considering the nature and complexity of the project. Additional details of the completion of the Central Subway tunnels are presented in another paper from the RETC 2015 conference (Leong et al., 2015)."

"A major geomechanical study was conducted for one of the UAE onshore oil fields with the purpose of studying reservoir rock properties and stress distribution, based on which a 3D coupled reservoir geomechanical model was built. This model was later used for wellbore stability analysis and for analyzing the effect of fractures on future reservoir production performance, including fracture deformation and permeability evolution occurring due to reservoir depletion and resulting changes in local stress field. The subject of this study was a complex fractured Upper Cretaceous carbonate reservoir characterized by high degree of heterogeneity, both vertically and laterally. Wellbore instability related drilling problems were encountered while drilling the wells in this field. The problems were mainly in drilling the horizontal wells, including breakouts and mud losses. Experimental results of laboratory tests used in this study are summarized in Part I of this paper whereas wellbore stability analysis and formulation of a3D geomechanical model that was built for that purpose is summarized herein.A 3D geomechanical reservoir model was developed, which included natural fractures. The mechanical properties of the reservoir rock, such as Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ratio, UCS, friction angle and tensile strength were populated based on the correlations established in Part I of this paper and the developed model was then used to simulate the 3D mechanical-property distribution and the evolution of the in situ stresses in the field due to depletion from 1983 to present-day. Based on the full field model, mud weight cubes were developed to predict the safe mud weight windows in different drilling directions. In addition, well stability prediction for two planned wells was performed using a 3D near-borehole model. Firstly, the computed stress state and mechanical properties simulated in the full field model were extracted along the well trajectory of an existing horizontal well which was drilled recently and then, a3D near-borehole model was constructed along the well trajectory. The wellbore stability analysis along the well trajectory, including stress state, strain distribution and displacements, was performed to identify the instability events along the well trajectory. It has been seen that the presence of natural fractures is closely related to the recorded borehole instability incidents. The computed plastic strains which indicate the wellbore failure were consistent with the recorded wellbore instability events in the FMI image logs, what provide further verification of the developed model. Then, this 3D near-borehole model was applied to two planned horizontal wells and the wellbore stability analysis for the two wells was carried out.The results showed that drilling vertically in the reservoir is safer than drilling horizontally. However, the drilling mud weight window in the vertical direction is narrow, being as narrow as 18.7 pcf or 0.299 sg locally. Drilling horizontally is less stable towards the maximum far field stress direction than towards the minimum far field stress direction. The mud weight cubes were used to identify the optimal well placement and well trajectory. For planned well trajectories, this technology can also be used to determine the optimal mud weight."

"Malaysian offshore and surrounding region are favorable to the installation of driven piles. During the design phase, pile driveability analysis plays a major role in pile make-up design to suit and selection of the feasible hammer, besides defining acceptance criteria to ensure a certain level of confidence of its fitness for purpose. The accuracy level of driveability analyses depends substantially on the selection of its parameters that best represent the in-situ scenario. The most uncertain of the parameters are those related to the soil model. It is noted in various projects in the region, that the consideration of suitable soil resistance to driving, coupled with soil dynamic parameters, significantly affects driving sequence planning, design, material, hammer selection and most importantly pile acceptance criteria. This is particularly relevant for a region that contains predominantly clayey subsoil resulting in large diameter, long friction piles susceptible to driving disturbances and slow strength recovery. Various researchers suggested suitable dynamic parameters and soil resistance during driving calibrated to specific regions. Regional experience suggests a set of soil degradation and parameters to suit the different stages of driving which is corroborated by pile monitoring records during continuous and delayed driving scenarios. The most sensitive amongst all dynamic soil parameters is the skin damping in clay. Smith’s wave theory approach considers a conservative assumption in selecting the parameters in absence of site-specific data, while a different approach may be adopted based on consistency of the clay for a site where the geotechnical parameters are well defined. This paper summarizes some independent studies on the effects of variations in dynamic parameters and resistance at different stages of driving and suitability of choices of different pile make-up and hammers for an optimum design. Similar experiences, coupled with simulation studies and back-analyses of available driving records suggest a reasonable judgment for the region.INTRODUCTIONFixed structures are generally supported in the in-place condition on a pile foundation those may either be driven or drilled & grouted piles depending on the subsoil. The piles may be driven inside the jacket legs or drilled through individual skirts normally grouped in clusters at the base of each leg. The types of subsoil dealt with in the Peninsular Malaysia and Gulf of Thailand surrounding region are conducive to the installation of driven piles only. The design of an offshore pile is fundamentally the optimization of pile length, size and make-up those are suitable to the requirement and supply. An interactive effort combining aspects related to geotechnical, structural and constructability are required to converge into a feasible, safe and economic solution. Other than the checking of the installation feasibility using a set of hammers in a given environment, driveability analysis is also used to define acceptance criteria for a majority of the offshore piles. Unlike short and end bearing piles in sand/soft rock, the piles in clayey subsoil regime often could not be rested on a dense strata where it could be met by a definite set criteria. Usually a measurement of blow counts determined and defined by driveability analyses forms the acceptance criteria to ensure a certain level of confidence of its fitness for the purpose coupled with an optimum penetration. While softness and uncertainty of the soil strata at target penetration may be resulted in possible overdrive, an unusual delay or the presence of an unidentified cemented layer or a boulder may cause early refusal or underdrive scenario. Hence, accuracy of the investigation, driveabilty study as well as the precautionary measures to avoid delays during driving are of equal importance."

"In-situ remediation of contaminated land with deep mixing can enable a multi-technique remedial strategy on the same site combining low permeability barriers, permeable reactive barriers, stabilisation/ solidification treatments as well as ground improvement, delivering significant advantages over alternative strategies. This was the core objective of Project SMiRT (Soil Mix Remediation Technology) which involved the execution of the largest research field trials in the UK to date to provide field validation for this technique. Around 800m3 of soil were treated on a contaminated site in Yorkshire in May 2011 with 6 different treatments, testing ~40 binder compositions and 10 different installation methodologies. Field monitoring, testing and coring activities at the site took place within the first 2 months after treatment and then again at 34 months after treatment. This paper presents an overview of the field activities to date and some 3-year results and assessment of a subset of the treated soil sections. Some good correlations are seen together with some clear differences between treatments. There is generally an observed consistency with depth, with the mixing effectiveness having a more profound effect than the binder composition or content, within the tested materials and ranges. These field trial activities are currently being used in the development of the full-scale commercial remedial strategy for the site.INTRODUCTION AND OVERVIEW OF PROJECT SMiRTWhile there are strong financial and environmental incentives to remediate and redevelop brownfield sites there are also barriers including fear of the unknown, regulatory control, delays, increased costs and the stigma associated with such sites. Hence the remediation process needs to be conducted in such a way to maximise the incentives and overcome the barriers, which is how deep mixing found its niche in the land remediation market. Soil mix technology is such a versatile technique that can perform a number of remediation treatments on the same site. These include low permeability in-ground barriers (cut-off walls), permeable reactive barriers (PRB), stabilisation/solidification (S/S) treatments, other additive related remediation, e.g. in-situ chemical oxidation and bioremediation, as well as soil amendments for greening and also ground improvement all on the same site (Al-Tabbaa et al, 2011). Placed in the context of alternative solutions, soil mix technology could potentially replace the five techniques shown in Figure 1, which would be required to deliver the same treatments mentioned above. Treatment trains strategy, where a combination of techniques in succession are used to both reduce the contamination levels and deal with residual contamination, is becoming common in land remediation and the use of one set of equipment to deliver this would bring about significant financial advantages. In addition, soil mix technology has many other advantages in terms of speed of implementation, elimination of exposure to contamination, elimination of off-site disposal and low cost. Soil mix technology for the remediation of contaminated land emerged in the UK in the mid 1980s and has since been employed in over 30 or so projects, which far exceeds its application to ground improvement for which only a handful of jobs have been carried out to date."

The quiet banks of the Maumee River in Toledo, Ohio, received a wake-up call July 16 as two smokestacks in the Marina District were leveled with dynamite. B&B Wrecking, Inc. of Cleveland contracted the project with the city to bring down the twin stacks, both measuring over 250 feet tall. The structures were part of the Toledo Edison Steam Plant and were erected nearly a hundred years ago. A week’s worth of preparation went into final planning, drilling and loading holes with over 80 pounds of explosives. The felling went precisely as planned as onlookers cheered as the stacks were reduced to rubble.

"The Cement Mixing Pile (CMP) quality assurance assessment is an important programme in evaluating the efficiency of foundation improvement. Coring is the current specified method of quality assessment in China which has the shortcomings of long cycle, high cost and low efficiency. The field and laboratory test show that the regular cone penetration test can only detect maximum of 4m of effective detection depth in CMP. In contrast, the method of cone penetration test in the reserved hole can detect the quality continuously along the pile at any depth. The tip resistance of reserved hole penetration in the 7th day has good linear relationship with unconfined compressive strength in the 28th day. The slope of linear relationship decreases with the increasing of clay particles content.INTRODUCTIONThe method of Cement Mixing Pile (CMP) is often used to improve soft soil foundation in highway construction, with the major purpose of reducing settlements under embankments (Bruce et al., 2000),which is a form of what is known as the Deep Mixing Method (Bruce et al., 2013). The CMP technology spread quickly in China in the 1980s. CMP quality assurance assessment is an important programme in evaluating the efficiency of foundation improvement. Coring is the current specified method of quality assessment in China (China Academy Of Building Research, 2002). The method of Coring is perceived in some quarters that samples will provide lower strengths given the distress caused to the core during drilling and extraction (Bruce et al., 2002).The cone penetration test CPT can provide continuous measurements of the penetration resistance, sleeve friction at the tip of the probe, which has advantages of simple operation, low cost and high efficiency compared with coring. However, CPT tests have not been established to assess CMP in Sweden because of difficulties in maintaining verticality (Larsson, 2005). In Finland and Norway, however, CPT tests are commonly used (Halkola, 1999). One of the disadvantages of CPT is the tendency of the cone to steer out of the column (Porbaha et al., 2003). Darya Mokrousova (2010) states this tendency to deviate can be overcome by pre-boring and starting the penetration test from the base of the pre-bored hole. Sheng Haiyang (1999) found that probes may be deflected out, sometimes even at small penetration depths, and may not give a complete inspection of the pile. Liu Songyu et al. (2003) suggested that the Standard Penetration Test (SPT) is an effective way to evaluate the strength and quality of stabilized soil-cement columns. In general, Regular CPT can’t test the full length of CMP, and SPT still needed drilling which causes discontinuous detection. From the existing standard of China, core sampling compressive strength test is the main method, evidently, coring displays a longer test cycle, high cost and low efficiency. Therefore, an improvement of CMP quality assessment, by conjuring a fast and reliable detection and evaluation method, is necessary. The aim of this paper is to research the feasibility of using CPT in assessing the quality of CMP and presents an improved CPT method."

The microstructure evolution kinetics of aluminum alloy B206 during artificial aging has been investigated using non-isothermal calorimetry. A combination of differential-scanning calorimetry (DSC) and tensile tests have been utilized to develop an Avrami model to predict the precipitation kinetics as a function of the thermal processing parameters. The Avrami coefficients, found based on a Kissinger analysis, compare well against those reported in the literature for aluminum-copper alloys. The rapid precipitation kinetics predicted by the Avrami model at temperatures higher than 200°C were assessed through a qualitative comparison against hardness measurement results. In contrast to the continuous hardening observed at 150°C, the material softens with continuing heat treatment at 250°C resulting in an overaged state. This can be attributed to the rapid precipitation kinetics at this temperature, leading to the termination of the precipitation-hardening effects at early stages of artificial aging.

"Mass stabilization involves mixing binding agents into marginal or contaminated soil to improve the subject material’s physical and/or chemical properties. This paper concentrates on the principles of soil mixing and benefits and application to new and existing rail right-of-way. Successfully applied in Scandinavia and other European countries, the soil mixing is now being applied in right of way in the northern latitudes of the U.S. and Canada. These regions have significant areas of “peaty” soils that can complicate construction and maintenance of rail and structure foundations. Mass stabilization can be used to improve the bearing strength of these soft soils for subsequent construction of railroads, pipelines, roads, and buildings. In civil engineering, the technology is often used to improve the construction properties such as bearing strength, of a marginal soil. In environmental engineering, stabilization is remediation treatment technology that protects human health and the environment by immobilizing hazardous constituents within the treated material. . The treatment is conducted while the subject material remains in-place (insitu). Mass Stabilization is often used to accomplish both civil and environmental purposes on the same project effectively addressing marginal soil while eliminating the expense of soil removal and replacement. This paper presents the principles of mass stabilization technology, implementation in the field and recent completed railway projects. The example rail projects will present the various benefits that soil mixing provides to railway construction and maintenance. Bench-scale studies and full scale implementation as well as soil construction properties before and after mass stabilization will be discussed. The paper and presentation will include information on the advantages of mixing methods and binding agent delivery systems.INTRODUCTIONNew or existing railroad right-of-ways may cross ground with low bearing capacity. Right of way subgrade undergo deflection (strain) as loads (stress) are applied. The amount of strain or deflection of the subgrade caused by loading of a train is proportional to the stiffness of the subgrade materials. Some soils, such as tamped ballast, are very stiff and resist loads well. Other soils such as soft clay, peat, or loose sand have low stiffness and undergo substantial movement under loads. It is very desirable to have the stiffest possible material in a track subgrade. Stiff subgrade material limits deflection under load, reducing track roughness and occurrence of track defects. Mass stabilization is a geotechnical method that can be used to improve the bearing capacity or stiffness of soil in these right-of-way. Mass stabilization involves mixing binding agents into soil subject to treatment while the soil remains in-place or insitu. Variations in the design or areas subject to treatment can be used to address transmission of vibration to adjacent structures."

The Ambatovy Nickel Project comprises the development of mine, hydrometallurgical processing facilities and necessary infrastructure in Madagascar, positioning Ambatovy as one of the world’s largest producers of nickel and cobalt from lateritic ore. SNC-Lavalin successfully provided comprehensive Engineering, Procurement, Construction Management (EPCM) services for this major capital project which, apart from its sheer size, scope, and engineering design, represented significant location, infrastructure, labour, environmental and climatic challenges. Today, the project has reached 90% of its nameplate capacity and is in its final performance optimization stage. This paper will discuss the significant project management effort that was required to successfully address the complexity of this major project. It will cover the main project management control systems and the engineering tools and processes used during the detail engineering, procurement, and construction phases to achieve optimum project execution.

"SynopsisA number of important areas in nuclear fuel cycle, at both the front end and back end, offer ideal opportunities for the application of non-destructive evaluation techniques. These techniques do not only provide opportunities for non-invasive testing of e.g. irradiated materials, but also play an important role in the development of new materials in the nuclear sector. The advantage of penetrating radiation used as probe in the investigation and testing of nuclear materials makes X-ray and neutron radiography (2D) and tomography (3D) suitable for various applications in the total nuclear fuel cycle. The unique and different interaction modes of the two radiation probes with materials provide several opportunities. Their complementary nature and non-destructive character makes them most suitable for nuclear material analyses, analytical method development, and the evaluation of the performance of existing nuclear material compositions. This article gives an overview of the X-ray and neutron radiography/tomography applications in the field of nuclear material testing, and highlights a few of the success stories. Several selected areas of application in the nuclear fuel cycle are discussed to illustrate the complementary nature of these techniques as applied to nuclear materials.IntroductionDuring the development of new materials for the nuclear industry, materials testing and characterization are of the outmost importance to maintain safety standards and reliability. No compromise on safety in the workplace in any area within the total nuclear fuel cycle can be tolerated, and therefore most in-situ material characterization and testing is conducted by certified and qualified personnel schooled in destructive and non-destructive testing (DT and NDT) methods. Certification and qualification in NDT can be obtained through many training centres in South Africa in accordance with European, American, and other international standards (SGS, n.d.; SAIW, n.d.; African NTD Centre, n.d.)."

Hydraulic fracturing (HF) is a mulit-scale and multi-physics process which makes numerical modelling challenging. Conventional numerical models focus on multi-physics nature of HF but the multiscale nature is compromised by idealization of reservoir to be continuous, homogeneous and isotropic. However, natural fractures take a significant role in the success of HF for exploration of unconventional resources like Shale gas. Advancement in microseismic monitoring provides useful data for simulation in a much greater details. There is an urgent need to develop a suitable numerical tool for multi-scale threedimensional simulation to better understand the roles of discontinuities and heterogeneity in reservoir and its interaction with HF, especially to address the environmental concerns such as induced seismicity. In this paper, a simple discontinuum numerical method – Lattice Element Method (LEM) is proposed to model HF in a large scale three-dimensional model. A reservoir is modelled as a lattice network composed of 1D Hookean’s spring. Fracturing is modelled simply by removing lattices that meet a specified threshold as determined by the critical energy release rate of the rock. By introducing disorder in the model, mesh dependency in modelling fracture growth is minimized. Fluid flow is simplified as flow in pipe network and the permeability of pipe is related to fracture aperture by cubic flow law. Therefore, fracture flow and rock deformation are fully coupled. In this paper, four simulations of the same configuration except with different degrees of reservoir heterogeneity are presented. Fractures formed are diffusive and two groups of fracture are identified – connected fractures and isolated fracture without clear spatial correlation. The former forms a ‘fracture cloud’ and contributes to fluid flow and modeled by pipe network. The flow of fluid is highly tortuous and pipe network is sparely connected. The degree of reservoir heterogeneity controls the growth of ‘fracture cloud’ and pipe network. Microseismic monitoring often shows diffusive fracturing during HF on site and hence the outcome of the proposed model can be compared to such monitoring results.

The key questions about fault reactivation in shales concern the potential enhanced fluid displacement through a previously low-permeability aseismic shale formation. Here we selected a critically-stressed fault cross-cutting the underground research facility of Tournemire (France) which is located in Toarcian shales. Several inclined boreholes were drilled across the 8.5 m thick fault zone characterized by a fractured damage zone (FDZ) and a central 2.4 m thick complex core (FC) made of multiple shear bands with gouge intercalated with highly fractured lenses. The fault was pressurized using a straddle packer system defining a 2.4m long injection chamber normal to the fault surface. Three fault zone intervals were tested, two in the fault damage zone and one in the fault core. A three-dimensional displacement sensor set in the chamber allowed continuous synchronous coupled monitoring of fault movements, injection pressure and flow rate. An anticlockwise 0.22-to-0.05 mm fault slip was captured associated with a 10-to-100 hydraulic aperture increase of the fault. Preliminary analyses of the experiments show that leakage in the fault zone is controlled by strength and stress magnitude contrasts between the fault core and the fault damage zone. Fault damage zone discontinuities display a much higher peak static friction angle than the fault core shear zones, respectively of 34 and 22° that could be related to complex interactions between healing and sealing processes. Fault core leakage is much more dependent on strain than on effective stress variations. Discontinuous, pulse-like leakage, develops following complex failure processes that may simultaneously take place in the gouge zones and along the large pre-existing discontinuities. Such results may be of importance in evaluating fault seal integrity in oil and gas exploration, production or CO2 storage or underground excavations monitoring.

"After six years of successful excavation with a support pattern, some roof failures have happened in a room-and-pillar underground mine excavated in a stratified rock mass. In this paper the authors give explanation to the failure mechanisms and redesign the support in order to solve the recent problems of roof collapse.The mine magnesite bed is approximately 14 m thick, and runs in the E-W direction with an average dip of 18º. Due to mine constraints and the inexpensiveness of the ore, the excavation is performed in the mineral itself, avoiding the need for mining dumps and waste excavation. Rooms and drifts are oriented in the mineral bed to form an angle of 19º to the direction of the strata, reducing the roadway gradients to less than 10%. Rooms are 11 m wide and pillars are 7 m wide. They are designed to leave a 1 meter thick magnesite bed in the roof of the rooms to act as a supporting beam. More often than not there is a layer of very poor quality marly shale up to 1 m thick resting on this magnesite beam. Overlying the poor quality marly shale there is a better quality, self-supporting sandy shale.First, a characterization of the involved rock masses (magnesite, marly shale and sandy shale) is performed, collecting the geotechnical data from previous studies and performing new in situ geotechnical surveys to check the soundness of the previous data. A distinction is made between different quality zones inside the mine by means of the RMR classification, associated to the occurrence of faults.Back-analysis of some of the failed rooms and data from exploration boreholes were used to determine the failure mechanisms (associated to Voussoir type failure or occurrence of sub-horizontal joints crossing the magnesite beam). Based on an understanding of these mechanisms, the method used to design the support and to analyse the stability of the different possible thicknesses of the magnesite beams of the rooms and drifts of the mine were improved.Numerical models of the most relevant conditions found in the mine were performed in order to better understand the behaviour of the roofs and to simulate the supporting solution obtained in the previous analyses.The most relevant conclusions with regard to the main elements causing the instability of the roof include the appearance of sub-horizontal discontinuities crossing the magnesite bed, which causes total instability of the roof and usually leads to collapse; excessive thinness of the magnesite beam in the problematic rooms; and the relaxation of the deepest (around 270 m in depth) zone of the mine because of existing faults."
