In this study, the ground improvement application applied under the live railway bridge's approach embankments in Sivas, Türkiye was investigated as a case study. The soil profile is mainly composed of orangish conglomerate, clay, silty sandy clay, and under claystone, and mudstone units in the study area. As a soil improvement method, the Deep Soil Mixing (DSM) technique based on the principle of simultaneous mixing the ground while injecting with the water-cement mix, was selected. The application of DSM columns is designed to be 45 degrees horizontal, in order to reach the deepest point of the soft clay units for better improvement against settlement. The core samples were taken from the DSM columns and the compressive strength tests were performed in the laboratory. The results were higher than the minimum designed values. It means that inclined DSM columns were applied successfully, and the excessive settlement problem was solved.

Most existing impoundment ponds and dams leak effluent into the soil or rock upon which they are constructed. However, proposed environmental legislation will require very stringent control on the release of toxic effluents such as cyanide. More exacting investigation, design, and construction techniques than have been used in the past will be required to satisfy these new regulations. This paper discusses the types of field and laboratory investigations required to develop the data for the design of an impoundment system containing toxic effluent, and discusses in detail technical considerations necessary to design this system. Design topics include reservoir sealing with natural and man-made materials; embankment sealing; embankment design considering stability, surface hydrology, capacity, and downstream catchment basins; and special implications of cyanide effluents.

"Temporary retaining walls are ordinarily used for tunnel construction work conducted using the opencut construction method. Retaining walls in such instances are typically installed vertically. However, shoring (such as struts and king posts) is required to ensure the stability of retaining walls in cases of excavation work to depths that exceed approximately 4 m. A new design and construction method that focuses on the effectiveness of retaining walls that are installed on an incline was studied with the aim of improving construction workability by omitting shoring. The inclined braceless excavation support (IBES) method, which was developed for use with the inclined buttress method, requires no shoring, even for deep-open-cut construction work and can be applied to deep excavation work on ground with a high groundwater level. This method has been applied at six work sites in Japan in recent years. This paper introduces the IBES design and construction method and presents verification results based on the design method, a model experiment, finite element analysis, and measurements obtained during construction work.INTRODUCTIONBackgroundIn the past, temporary retaining walls used in open-cut construction work have been installed vertically, and shoring (such as struts and king posts) has typically been used to ensure the stability of these retaining walls when the excavation depth reached 3–4 m. However, shoring interferes with structures built within excavations and requires box-outs and penetration sections in the structures, as well as concrete joints that raise concerns about their impact on the watertightness and long-term durability of structures (Figure 1).Shoring also narrows the space available for conducting construction work and reduces construction work efficiency, and the installation and removal of shoring increases the construction duration and cost. As a result, there has been a demand for ways to reduce or eliminate shoring to improve the quality of structures and construction work efficiency."

Fermilab is constructing a large underground cavern in Limestone to house scientific equipment. The cavern will have a complex L-shaped geometry and about 215-foot depth with relatively shallow rock cover, with service/egress shafts accesses into the cavern. Three-dimensional analytical models were developed to study the ground behavior and support performance. Multiple rock constitutive and failure models were evaluated. The models were significantly impacted by the high lateral in-situ earth pressure at the site. This paper will describe the design approaches that were taken to optimize the cavern arch geometry to allow safe construction in shallow rock, and permanent support requirements.

Usually different methods for designing a single pile submitted to a lateral loading are available. They are based on theory of elasticity with the parameters E,v or subgrade reaction method using the p-y curves. The subgrade reaction methods are commonly used. They allow determining the efforts exerted along the piles and their corresponding displacements. Before any design the reaction curves P-y must be well defined for each foundation soil layer. These curves link the pile horizontal displacement y to the subgrade reaction of soil P. Different in situ tests such as the static penetrometer or the pressuremeter give a possibility to get the P-y curves in the case of a single pile installed in sand with an horizontal surface and statically laterally loaded. These ideal conditions are not always respected on the site around the pile if appear slopes, embankments, or buildings... The behaviour of such configurations of piles is more sophisticated due to the proximity ( slope, embankment, earthworks, buildings,..). A research program has been conducted to determine the influence of a slope on the P-y curves by centrifuge modelling. The centrifuge tests constitutes an experimental approach allowing parametric studies in respect with similitude laws in geotechnique. Before all, repeatable tests have demonstrated that the test conditions, the instrumentation equipment and the installation method for piles are well controlled. By this way, the obtained results from centrifuge tests can be transferred to the prototype i.e. the in situ piles. Many tests have been performed on piles in sand to determine the influence of a pile on the p-y curves. The main objective is to give for practice some coefficients to apply to p-y single pile curve to take into account the proximity slope effect. Here the experimental set up is described and in particular the proximity slope effect is discussed. Deduced subgrade reaction reduction factors are proposed for piles in sand under lateral loading.

The philosophy and detail of mill design in developing countries, where it is frequently difficult to obtain experienced, qualified supervision to operate the plant, are discussed. The resulting design suggests the desirability of simple units, with maximum visibility of equipment operation and material movement, which allow the minimal technical supervision to see the plant conditions prevailing. Information on plant conditions during periods of lesser supervision can be provided by the use of simple, low-maintenance recorders. Where the mill is intended for operation in a developing country, it is insufficient for the flowsheets and plant layouts merely to be drawn: the process metallurgist must pay meticulous attention to details that could ordinarily be left to the design detailing group. The design of this type of mill requires a knowledge of human engineering—of the type of individual who will operate and supervise the plant; probable changes in personnel should be taken into account. Details are suggested for coarse-ore handling, screens, feeders, secondary and tertiary crushers, conveyors, dust collecting, fine-ore feeding, grinding mills, conditioners, flotation, thickeners, filters, reagent systems, sand pumping, sampling, instrumentation, safety and construction

The development of the Montreal metro extension Line 5 -Blue Line- toward the northeast are located between the existing Saint-Michel station and Anjou. It consists of 6-km long two-track tunnel, five new stations and six auxiliary structures. Most of the tunnel (5.5 km) will be excavated by a 9.6 m diameter shielded rock TBM and supported by a precast segmental lining system. TBM will be fitted for probing and preexcavation grouting to control water inflow into the tunnel during the excavation. This paper presents major design aspects of the TBM tunnel including alignment, geological condition, spaceproofing, precast segmental lining, and geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring.

Commercd explosives have evolved through this century f?om dynamite through ANFO to the current lines of Water Gels and Emulsions. Water Gels and Emulsions evolved to counter the lack of water resistance and density of ANFO yet maintain its low cost position verses dynamite. Today, explosives must be safe and inexpensive and perform under a wide range of temperatures, function efficiently in wet or dry boreholes and have a good shelf life. Emulsions meet this criterion, which is why they are the current trend products worldwide.

INTRODUCTION This chapter outlines some general principles and procedures that a rock mechanics engineer can use to arrive at a logical design for the size, shape, and spacings of underground openings in various types of com¬petent rock formations. Rock formations can be clas¬sified into six major categories which are useful for design purposes, provided the necessary input data are available regarding the geology of the site, the physical properties of the rock, the in-situ stress field in the rock, and the general geometry of the underground openings. The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) developed a rock classification system based upon these concepts and found it to be useful for design purposes (Obert, et al., 1960; Obert and Duvall, 1967). This classification sys¬tem is given in Table 1; however, an extra column has been added to the original classification to indicate the appropriate design techniques for each rock class. In this classification system, two main classes of rock are considered: competent rock and incompetent rock. Competent Rock Competent rock is any rock which, because of its mechanical and geological characteristics, is capable of sustaining underground openings without the aid of any structural support except that provided by unmined rock in the form of pillars and side walls, etc. Roof bolts and small random props which support only local loose rock are not considered structural supports. Competent rock is further subdivided into three ad¬ditional categories-massive, laminated, and jointed¬ which are defined as follows: Massive Rock: Massive rock is a rock formation where the spacing between mechanical defects such as joints, partings, or faults is equal to or greater than the critical dimensions of openings, or where the strength of the bond across these mechanical defects is com¬parable to the rock strength. Laminated Rock: Laminated rock is a rock forma¬tion divided by approximately parallel planes of weak¬ness into lamina whose thicknesses are small compared to critical dimensions of openings and where the bond between the lamina is weak compared to the rock strength. Elastic Rock-This is rock whose physical proper¬ties will permit the use of elastic theory to predict strains and displacements from applied stresses. Inelastic Rock-This is rock whose physical proper¬ties are such that strains and displacements are a strong function of time as well as applied stress. Incompetent Rock Incompetent rock is any rock which, because of its mechanical and geologic characteristics, is not capable of sustaining underground openings without the aid of additional structural support in the form of linings, steel sets, or systems of props. This classification system for rock depends not only on the mechanical and geologic characteristics of the rock but on the size of openings and their depth be¬low the surface. For example, many competent rocks at shallow depths for small stress fields could become inelastic rock at greater depths and larger stress fields, or competent massive rock for small openings could be¬come laminated or jointed rock for larger openings. Thus, to classify rock for design purposes requires a knowledge of the geologic properties of the rock mass, the physical properties of the rock, the general size of the openings to be mined, and the average range of the in-situ stress field to be encountered. To design underground openings and structures in rock, it is necessary to use criteria of failure for rock under various stress conditions, and to use safety factors to allow for differences between laboratory and in-situ strength properties of rock and to account for errors in¬troduced by the various assumptions made in the design process. Criteria of failure based on maximum stresses have been found to give reliable results in practice. Thus, it is assumed that rock will fail in tension when the tensile stress exceeds the tensile strength of the rock as determined by a standard modulus of rupture test on samples of rock core. If the tensile stresses in rock are small, then it is assumed that the rock will fail at a value of compressive stress equal to the compressive strength of the rock as determined by standard uniaxial compres¬sive strength tests on samples of rock core. "Most underground mines require heating or cooling systems to meet health and safety standards in the working areas. In regions where daily or seasonal fluctuations of environmental conditions exist, these systems tend to be over-sized and operate at low average load factors, which increase both investment and operating costs. One possible approach to reduce the temperature variations of the fresh air supplied to the mine, and so reducing the investment in large heating or cooling systems, is to use rock as a thermal regenerator or thermal storage system. Packed rock beds act as thermal inertial units, damping the atmospheric temperature oscillations to provide a more constant fresh air temperature. However, although regenerators exist in some mines, and packed bed rocks have been studied in detail in solar thermal power applications, there is a lack of tools to design new and sufficiently large storage systems of this kind. This work fills the existing gap by presenting a methodology to design and evaluate the impact on the ventilation systems of these regenerators. The method is validated using existing rock bed systems found in the literature and illustrates possible designs for small and large size regenerators in both hot and cold climates.1 INTRODUCTION “ It is quite amazing how often answers to extremely complicated problems can be obtained in this way, by using greatly simplified models of the real situation for the purpose of calculation.” Whiller, A. in private communication to J. Motivation Most underground mines located in regions with extreme climatic conditions require the thermal pre-treatment of the fresh ventilation airflows, whether for heating or cooling. Heating commonly is needed in sites with sub-zero temperatures and is usually effected by direct or indirect burning of natural gas or propane. Alternatively, cooling is required in areas with hot temperatures, or in mines with high underground thermal loads where the fresh air at ambient temperature cannot provide enough refrigeration. Thus, when the ambient air conditions cannot provide by itself enough thermal power to ensure safe underground working conditions, a heating or cooling plant is required, which involves a considerable equipment and operation cost."

Safety bulletins and stickers issued for the paste backfill plant at Cannington read as follows: æCannington Paste Fill Plant, First of ItÆs Kind in AustraliaÆ. We could even dare to state that the Cannington plant is different than any other paste backfill plant in the world because of the overall design, plant equipment and underground delivery. However, one thing to be certain of is, the paste backfill plant works as designed and a pump is not required to deliver paste underground given the general plant arrangement at Cannington. The past two years have been a process of evolution to design and construct the plant and make it work. This paper will describe the paste process using full mill tails along with placement of cemented paste underground. Discussions will include rationale of fixed plant selection along with various control requirements. BHP World Minerals recently commissioned its paste backfill plant in December 1997. Cannington is placing full mill tails underground via two surface boreholes that deliver either to primary or secondary stopes.

"Northeast Frontier Railway (NF Railway) intends to connect Imphal, the capital of Manipur (bordering Myanmar) with Assam by railway link. They have planned a 125km long railway line that passes through steep rolling hills of Patkai region, eastern trail of Himalaya, and as a result large number of tunnels and bridges need to be designed. While the high mountains are penetrated by tunnel, the deep gorges between the mountain ridges are connected by tall bridges. The tallest of such bridges connects a gorge at about 140m above its bed level with an overall length about 700m at rail level. In all, five such bridges with tall piers are now under construction. With extensive study on possible alternate arrangement of the bridges considering the effect of high seismicity of the area, moderately to highly weathered siltstone/ sandstone as ground bed material, slope of the hills etc it was decided that bridge will be founded on 1.5m diameter bored cast in situ piles with length varying from 20m to 30m depending on the location. The substructures are RCC hollow pier and superstructures are steel open web through type girder of 103.5m span. Considering absence of any major construction work in the vicinity, it was decided that prior to design work, Site-specific spectrum study will be carried out and design will be carried out considering the varying stiffness of the tall piers, each of different height. Interesting results were obtained regarding behavior of piles under lateral loads generated by high seismic conditions. The paper discusses in detail the design of Pile foundations and the effect of bed material along the steep slope on which the piles are being constructed.INTRODUCTIONIndian Railway has undertaken the construction work of connecting the North-Eastern states of India through railway line. The major stretches of the area passes through hilly terrain and as a result the line passes through tunnels and bridges in succession. The tall mountains are being penetrated with tunnels and immediate after deep gorges are crossed with high level bridges. The entire area is under high seismically active zone. The bed material below the ground level of the sloped hill is 4 to 10 meter of mixed soil of sand, gravel, pebbles etc underlain by moderately to highly weathered sandstone, siltstone at the higher level and moderately weathered sandstone, siltstone at lower level. Considering all the aspects like constructability, maintainability, geological and geotechnical aspect, seismicity, stability, safety, functional aspect and cost it was finally decided that the bridges will be simply supported structure with open web through type steel superstructure of maximum span 103.5m and hollow cylindrical discretely varying RCC substructure with 1.5m diameter group of piles as foundation. The paper discusses on the design aspect of the pile foundation in the rocky strata in the hill slope. The codes and standards that have been followed for design are IRS (Indian Railway Standard), IS (Indian Standard), IRC (Indian Road Congress), AREMA (American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-way Association), UIC (International Union of Railway) provisions."

The realignment of U.S. Highway 95 in Sandpoint, Idaho, is being designed on a site underlain by glaciolacustrine soil that includes very thick deposits of soft, sensitive clay to estimated depths of greater than 200 m. The highway realignment will include construction of numerous embankments, mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) retaining walls, and pile-supported bridges. The area of the proposed new highway corridor also includes existing historic and commercial buildings, a railroad, sensitive environmental areas, and economically vital tourism/recreational assets. The evaluation of pile axial capacity included the use of a variety of methods, including total stress, effective stress, and empirical methods using the results of piezocone soundings and conventional borehole and laboratory tests. These methods were used along with the findings from an instrumented static loading test to design the piled foundations for the bridges. A critical factor throughout the design of the pile foundations was controlling settlements to levels that could be tolerated by the bridges. Also, because of the proximity of the pile foundations to the existing structures and the proposed new embankments, the project has required careful consideration of the potential interaction between these elements. The analysis of piles also considered the potential for settlement of embankments, drag loads on the piles, and downdrag.

DESIGN BASIS Size of Project The size of the project generally is expressed in tons of ore milled per day, but company policies differ widely in this respect with a few adhering to this set figure but many expecting the design capacity to be liberal. To some companies that follow the latter practice a 25,000-tpd milling plant that cannot reach 30,000 or 35,000 tpd with¬out major additions is a disappointment. The engineers responsible for planning the operation must know what is intended. Other projects are sized according to the tonnage of product rather than of mine ore; examples are iron ore mills that express size in terms of tons per year of pellets or high-grade concentrates, heavy minerals plants in tons per year of rutile or ilmenite, cement plants in barrels per year, potash in tons per year of muriate, phosphate in tons per year of washer rock and flotation concentrate, and others. However, tons per day milling rate is also the common denominator in most of those instances because the major equipment has to be selected on that criterion. Equally important are operating schedules, particularly the number of operating days per week and shifts per day for ore delivery, crushing, grinding, and processing. Hours per shift also are an impor¬tant factor in design, particularly in the case of ore delivery, and the lost time expected for maintenance, cleanup, inspection, preventive maintenance shutdowns, and many others, has to be taken into ac¬count. Frequently, the ore deposit will vary in hardness and grade to such a degree that the capacity of the mill will vary widely from year to year and cannot be expressed as a fixed figure, but rather as an average over a calculable period, such as ten years, or as a specific daily capacity over the first two years, next four years, etc., or some similar projection. A good example of this kind of situation is Asarco's Mission operation 15 miles southwest of Tucson, Ariz., described by Weiss and Vincent,1 where the major rock types differed widely in hardness, so that a change in the proportion of these types in the mill feed could have imposed difficult design problems if a constant tonnage rate had been expected. Expected Life The life of a mining operation depends upon the size of the deposit and the rate of mining. The latter is a policy decision based on an economic analysis2 which, in turn, is based on many factors. From the point of view of mill planning, the estimated life of the operation determines many criteria and affects many decisions on strength of structures and degree of protection of men and materials, the quality of the materials-handling and process machinery, the type of delivery systems for ore to the mill and concentrates to the smelter or market, environmental considerations, and many others. Costly installations that may be excellent investments for a 20-year project may be waste¬ful for a 5-year operation. An example is the comparison of different methods of crushing or grinding. Take single- vs. multiple-stage grind¬ing-the former may be found more economical for a 5-year operation, and the other, more costly method more economical for a 15- to 20-year life. Mining and Ore Transportation The mining method and the means of transportation of the ore to the first crushing stage have far-reaching effects upon mill design, particularly the crushing sections, and upon site selection (see Chapter 2, Situation of Mill). Consequently, mill design cannot advance until the mine planning has reached at least tentative decisions concerning these important matters, or reach the final stages until much is known about the ore that may be expected month by month and year by year for a reasonable period. Methods of ore transportation used in over 90 underground and open-pit mines are listed briefly in Section 32 (Table 1), and more detail is found later in this section and in Section 10, Storage and Transport. These methods include surface railroad, trucks, conveyors, surface skips, underground skips, and tramming from hoist or tunnel. In surface mining, transportation of the uncrushed ore by rail or truck to the primary crushing plant-conveniently located for lowest overall cost-is most common. Rail transportation provides low perton-mile costs. Truck transportation, though in some cases less eco¬nomical, is more flexible and more adaptable to mountainous terrain; furthermore, recent improvements have reduced the operating costs to keep trucks competitive on low-grade ores. The design of the primary crushing plant will be essentially the same whether delivery is by truck or rail, but the location of the plant is subject to more rigid restrictions in the latter case because of grade limitations, and these in turn may adversely affect the selec¬tion of the mill site as well. The influence of truck haulage in reducing the stripping ratio in open-pit mines is an added reason for predicting a minor role for rail transportation in the future. The use of conveyors to transport ore from the pit to the milling plant involves (in most cases) crushing the ore to a reasonable size (10 to 20 in. maximum with today's crushers) before conveying. The Twin Buttes system3 which went into operation in late 1969, utilizes primary crushers (two) and conveyors to receive rock waste, ore, and low-grade stockpile material from trucks, then transport them to the appropriate destination. Flexibility is dependent upon the porta¬bility of the primary crushers. In the face of this development, inclined skip hoists are no longer important to the mill designers. Underground mines generally pose fewer problems of design; these will be discussed in Chapter 2. Character of Deposit The degree of homogeneity of the ore in various parts of the mine is an important factor. The characteristics that concern the millman (approximately in order of importance) are: hardness, assay, metallurgical response, size distribution,4 and moisture content. Under metallurgical response may be included degree of oxidation, mineral¬ogy, clay content, and reagent consumption, as well as process re¬sponse in general. Short-term variations-hour-to-hour, day-to-day, or even week-to-week-make operation of the plant more difficult, require greater flexibility of process design and, perhaps, also require more instrumentation and manpower. This paper will describe design of precast segmental tunnel lining for the Pawtucket CSO Tunnel Project in Providence, Rhode Island. The tunnel is 11,700 LF long with 30-foot finished diameter to be constructed in complex sedimentary rocks. Special features of the segments include a large keystone and no connector used on radial joints. The typical segments will be steel fiber reinforced, and hybrid segments with additional steel rebars and shear bicones will be used around the adit openings without use of any structural framing. The important design considerations will be discussed, including special 3D segment to adit connection analyses performed.

Nowadays more infrastructure tunnel projects are procured using design-build method. In this environment, the Owner’s engineer would typically provide performance requirements for the design-builder, and the Contractor’s designer would work with the contractor to design the tunnel lining based on the Contractor’s means and methods and manufacturing process. This paper will describe the typical requirements provided by the Owner based on its design objectives, and the means and methods by the Contractor that would significantly impact the design. Project examples and recommendations for Owner’s requirements will be provided that can optimize the design and still achieve the Owner’s performance objectives.

"Pilot plants for pressure hydrometallurgy represent special design and project execution challenges. Over the past twenty years, Zeton has designed and fabricated a variety of world-class pressure hydrometallurgical pilot-plant facilities for the nickel industry, and this paper discusses design considerations and strategies related to such projects. Project execution methods are also discussed, and guidance is given for the selection of materials of construction and for the selection of appropriate pressure and temperature design points for pressure hydrometallurgical pilot equipment. The paper concludes with a discussion of the need for process similarity with future commercial operations and the realities of pilot-scale equipment.INTRODUCTION The process technology developer or owner and the designer/fabricator of a new pilot-plant facility are faced with some difficult technical choices even after the decision to build a dedicated plant has been taken. A pilot-plant project is usually on the critical path of a large commercial project involving investments many multiples greater than the capital cost of the pilot plant. Schedule savings in the design, manufacture, and commissioning of the pilot plant or in a rapid completion of the experimental program can be disproportionately beneficial to the overall development project. However, inappropriate shortcuts resulting in major oversights can be disproportionately problematic. A number of considerations and suggestions for both the project execution approach and the process engineering design of pressure hydrometallurgical pilot-plant facilities are presented as a guide for potential owners and operators of new pilot-plant equipment and facilities. These suggestions are particularly applicable to the nickel industry, where the majority of our firm’s prior hydrometallurgical experience was obtained. This paper is an update to an earlier publication (Martin, 2004), offering an opportunity for a new generation of metallurgists and engineers to learn the specialist requirements of pilot- and demonstration-scale plant design, which are key functions in the development and commercialization of new processes."

Raise caving is a novel cave mining method, which has been proposed for mass mining at increasing mining depths in LKAB operations. The method makes use of the raise mining technology and an active stress management approach. For the implementation the method is split into two phases, namely a de-stressing phase and a production phase. In the de-stressing phase, a slot-pillar system is established. The purpose of slots is to provide stress shadows and the purpose of the large pillars is to control stress and seismicity. The production phase follows after the de-stressing phase. Required infrastructure in the production phase is developed delayed in stress shadows and bulk extraction takes place in de-stressed zones. Eventually the pillars crush and they are extracted in the production phase. A comprehensive research and development program has been launched to develop the raise caving method towards implementation. As part of this program a full-scale test site of raise caving will be conducted as well as raise caving operations are planned for depth extensions in LKAB mines. This paper discusses the design of raise caving operations in practice at the LKAB mines. In particular, the purpose of the paper is to focus on requirements for the development and design of a raise caving operation. The development of raise caving is discussed from a systems engineering perspective as well as from a management perspective. The functional requirements in the destressing and production phase are outlined and discussed in the paper. The discussion is on basis of the main elements of the raise caving system, such as slots, stopes, pillars and infrastructure. Critical rock engineering design requirements in the de-stressing and production phase are highlighted and dependencies between individual main elements are identified. The analyses show that pillars are especially important for the success of the mining method. Overall, the analyses show that raise caving is a complex system and that its development demands a multidisciplinary approach.

THE Yallourn chimney has aroused interest, as it is, for the time being, the tallest structural erection in Australia. Its height was not decided on, however, with the object of breaking records, but is purely incidental to the purpose which it serves. Theboiler plant at the briquetting works (first instalment) consists of five Babcock and Wilcox land-type water-tube boilers, each of 4510 sq ft. heating su:r£ace and 225 sq. ft. grate area in the form of step grates. Four boilers will normally produce 73,000 lb. of steam per hour at a gauge pressure of 265 lb. and a temperature of 6500 F., the fifth boiler being a reserve. Each boiler will consume about 100 tons of Yallourn coal per 24 hours. Provision is made for future installation of economizers, should it be found desirable. Designing for this condition, and allowing for a waste gas temperature of 3500 F. and an air temperature exceeding 1000 it was found necessary to have a draft of about 1.3 in. (water gauge) at the base of the chimney, and to deal with about 2000 cub. ft. of gases per second. Estimates were made of the cost of providing the necessary draught by means of fans and by means of a tall chill).ney. The annual charges of the two methods differed only slightly, and the tall chimney wasselected as being the more general practice in briquetting factories.Estimates were prepared for brick and concrete chiIlllleys. Yallourn bricks at that time were hand-made, and, while very suitable for domestic work, were not capable of withstanding high compressive stresses. The chimney design to suit these bricks thus required to be on very ample lines, resulting in high cost. "Inherent existence of different rooms (openings) along the extraction line in a depillaring panel provides an easy path for the goaf to encroach the working area. Each of these openings in a mechanized depillaring (MD) operation along the extraction line is supported by the roof bolt-based breaker line support (RBBLS) to restrict the goaf encroachment. Different field studies by Council for Scientific and Industrial Research - Central Institute of Mining and Fuel Research (CSIR-CIMFR) found that the RBBLS works effectively during the depillaring under the shadow of stable surrounding ribs/fenders only. It is observed that, generally, these natural supports experience high value of induced stresses after a large amount of void creation inside the goaf. The induced stress creates spalling/loosening of the sides of the natural supports. Field studies also found that the positions of the RBBLS at the goaf edge need to be adjusted according to the depth of this spalling/ loosening. However, a systematic study in field for the correct positioning of the breaker line as per the spalling/loosening under different site conditions is difficult. Therefore, on the basis of the data and guidance provided by these field investigations, a detailed parametric investigation was conducted in the laboratory on simulated models for an effective design of RBBLS in a MD panel. FLAC3D is used for the simulation of the depillaring, and the available empirical formulations for Indian coalfields are used for subsequent calibration. An analysis of stress redistribution for different stages of the MD in simulated models showed the significance of the nature of overlying strata/induced stress for the RBBLS design. Discussing some results of field studies, this paper presents results of the laboratory investigations for an effective design of the RBBLS.INTRODUCTIONContinuous Miner (CM)-based mechanized depillaring (MD) is an important issue for Indian coalfields, where huge amounts of coal are locked up in standing pillars (Dixit and Mishra, 2010). Considerable variations in site conditions of these developed pillars bring a number of technical challenges into consideration during their final extraction. One of these challenges is goaf encroachment/overriding during caving of the competent roof strata. Goaf encroachment/overriding can effectively be controlled, mainly, by suitable design of natural supports (rib/snook/fender). However, there is a requirement of applied supports against the immediate roof as a considerable portion of this roof is exposed due to the presence of different openings along the line of extraction. These applied supports act as a fulcrum at the goaf edge between the working area and the goaf to facilitate the break out of the hanging roof inside the goaf. This is called breaker line support. An effective breaker line support is important for the efficiency of a depillaring operation. Generally, MD adopts roof bolt-based breaker line support (RBBLS) at the goaf edge (Singh, et al., 2014). For the first time in India, roof bolts were applied at the goaf edge as RBBLS in a CM-based MD (Leeming, 2003). In the beginning, three rows of roof bolts were installed as primary and secondary breaker lines support. On the basis of the observations of instrumented bolts, only two rows of roof bolts were used as secondary RBBLS (Ram, et al., 2014). Now, most of the MD operations in India are using only two rows of bolts as RBBLS (Table 1). However, the strata mechanics studies at different MD operations showed interesting characteristics resulting from this support (Ram, et al., 2015)."
