"One of the most important phases in Canada's relatively rapid development of its metal mining and refining industries was launched in 1928 when the directors of Noranda Mines Limited decided to establish an electrolytic copper refinery ""somewhere in Eastern Canada”. Noranda's president, J.Y. Murdoch, had already evolved the company's ""mine to market"" policy and was determined to prove the economic feasibility of refining Noranda copper in Canada. The time appeared to be ripe as buoyant business conditions continued into 1929. In addition, proven ore reserves at the Horne Mine in northwest Quebec had virtually tripled and the price of copper had reached a healthy 15 cents per pound. Letters Patent incorporating the company bearing the date February 6, 1929 had been granted by the Secretary of State in accordance with an application that specified a capital structure of $2 million divided into 20 000 shares with a value of $100 each. Noranda assumed 70% of the original investment in the proposed refinery, while the Nicholas Copper Company of New York (which later became Phelps Dodge Corporation) and British Metal Corporation Ltd. of London, England, each were responsible for 15%. Nicholas Copper Company agreed to supply the design and to supervise the construction of the refinery and British Metal Corporation would act as sales agent and market the refinery's products."

"Abstract - Rare-element pegmatites may host several economic commodities, such as tantalum (Taoxide minerals), tin (cassiterite), lithium (ceramic-grade spodumene and petalite), and cesium (pollucite). Key geological features that are common to pegmatites in the Superior province of Ontario and Manitoba, Canada, and in other large tantalum deposits worldwide, can be used in exploration.An exploration project for rare-element pegmatites should begin with an examination of a regional geology map. Rare-element pegmatites occur along large regional-scale faults in greenschist and amphibolite facies metamorphic terranes. They are typically hosted by mafic metavolcanic or metasedimentary rocks, and are located near peraluminous granite plutons (A/CNK > 1.0). Once a peraluminous granite pluton has been identified, then the next step is to determine if the pluton is barren or fertile. Fertile granites have elevated rare element contents, Mg/Li ratio < 10, and Nb/Ta ratio < 8. They commonly contain blocky K-feldspar and green muscovite. Key fractionation indicators can be plotted on a map of the fertile granite pluton to determine the fractionation direction: presence of tourmaline, beryl, and ferrocolumbite; Mn content in garnet; Rb content in bulk K-feldspar; and Mg/Li and Nb/Ta ratios in bulk granite samples. Pegmatite dikes with the most economic potential for Li-Cs-Ta deposits occur the greatest distance (up to 10 km) from the parent granite.Metasomatized host rocks are an indication of a nearby rare-element pegmatite. Metasomatic aureoles can be identified by their geochemistry: elevated Li, Rb, Cs, B, and F contents; and by their mineralogy: presence of tourmaline, (Rb, Cs)-enriched biotite, holmquistite, muscovite, and rarely garnet.Once a pegmatite dike has been located, the next step is to assess its potential to contain Ta mineralization. Pegmatites with the highest degree of fractionation (and thus the most economic potential for Li-Cs-Ta) contain blocky K-feldspar with >3,000 ppm Rb, K/Rb < 30, and >100 ppm Cs; and coarsegrained green muscovite with >2,000 ppm Li, >10,000 ppm Rb, >500 ppm Cs, and >65 ppm Ta. Pegmatites with Ta mineralization usually contain Li-rich minerals (e.g., spodumene, petalite, lepidolite, elbaite, amblygonite, and lithiophilite) and may contain Cs-rich minerals (e.g., pollucite, Cs-rich beryl). The ore minerals of Ta are commonly manganotantalite, manganocolumbite, wodginite, and microlite; Ta-rich cassiterite is also commonly present. Tantalum mineralization tends to occur in albitic aplite, mica-rich (lepidolite, cleavelandite ± lepidolite), and spodumene/petalite pegmatite zones."

"There has been a continuous evolution with the use of pre-cast concrete elements in the construction of aluminum smelters. In 1990, Phase I of Alouette was built using cast-in-place concrete exclusively. Whereas, other AP 30 technology plants such as Hillside 2 in the mid-1990s used pre-cast concrete beams with cast-in-place floors. Mozal 2, in 2002, used pre-cast concrete beams with pre-cast partial-slab operating floors. Alouette Phase II went further. Not only were the potroom building beams and floors pre-cast, but the entire pot support system, insulating walls and basement jersey walls were pre-cast. Once the techniques for bending and welding the reinforcement bars and the design for attaching electrical insulating plates to the concrete was perfected, the challenge for the project remained only in the logistics of transporting the pieces to site and simple erection. The overall impact on the project was dramatic. Using prefabricated concrete not only allowed advancement of the schedule, but totally eliminated formwork, re-bar installation, and form removal activities along with the handling of all the materials involved with these activities. With the elimination of these labour and material-intensive portions of the job, exposure to work injuries was dramatically reduced. The most prevalent activity for lost time accidents is during the rough work associated with concrete formwork, placing concrete and form removal. Another area where prefabricated elements were successfully used on Alouette Phase II was for the insulating walls enclosing the pot area, known as the ""claustra walls"". Usually these walls are constructed in-situ using mortar and breeze block. Success was also achieved with prefabrication of the perimetric walls that are installed at the lower floor of the potroom. A big advantage of using prefabricated concrete in the electrolysis area is in assuring electrical isolation for the operating floors. "The Cerro Corona mine consists of a Cu-Au porphyry deposit located in the Andes of northern Peru. The deposit comprises a typical Cu-Au multiphase porphyry mineralisation that has been overprinted by an epithermal event. This has generated a complex pattern of argillic alteration facies, which was accompanied by a locally structural-controlled Au-Cu mineralisation with the presence of gold and limited Cu sulfides and sulfosalts. These features, along with the porphyry-style mineralisation, produced a multifaceted occurrence of gold.Since the beginning of operations at Cerro Corona in 2008 there has been a continuous improvement of the geological and mineralogical knowledge. All mineralogical studies have mainly focused on host rock types and, to a lesser extent, alteration minerals, but little work has been done on the mineralisation itself. As a consequence, limited mineralogical information was available for use in the process optimisation initiatives.In the last two years, a series of mineralogical characterisation studies were undertaken with two main goals. First, to gain an understanding of the mineralisation genesis and second, to obtain a detailed characterisation of copper and gold minerals to support ongoing process optimisation. The first goal was achieved by conventional optical microscopy while the second required electronic microscopy and other microanalyses due to the necessity of quantifying several minerals of interest for the processing.The results were used to refine pre-existing geometallurgical domains, explain copper and gold losses in the flotation process and to some extent, improve copper and gold recoveries. The mineralogical characterisation is an ongoing work. Using the cellular automata computational technique it was possible to simulate the generation and discharge of an iron ore pellet pile inside a direct iron reduction oven, as well as to calculate the reduction degree of the pellets as they leave the oven. It allows simulation of the variation of operational parameters and verify the results of those variations in the pellet reduction degree. The simulated data was validated in two instances: for the dynamics of the pellet flow inside the oven it was used in an acrylic bi-dimensional silo; and data from direct reduction iron literature was used for validation of the pellet reduction. The simulated results were considered acceptable to describe the movement of the iron pellet inside the direct reduction iron oven and to describe the iron pellet reduction direct in the oven.

Magma Copper Company&apos;s San Manuel SX-EW facility has operated since May, 1986. The original facility had a design capacity of 25,000 tons per year of electrowon copper cathode produced by processing pregnant leach solution from an open pit/heap leach operation. In 1988, the plant was expanded to 50,000 tons per year to incorporate processing in-situ leach solutions. This paper focuses primarily on the heap leaching area with regard to exploration, testing, feasibility, permitting, design and construction, and operating practices. Research utilizing surfactant leaching aids to enhance copper recovery is also discussed.

This work concerns a process for the inertization of asbestos-containing wastes and the subsequent recycling of the inerts for the production of ceramic refractories. One of producted refractories is cordierite, that is widely used in the electronics industry and also in mechanical engineering for the manufacture of catalytic converters for automobiles. The process thus achieves the twofold objective of eliminating toxic and harmful refuse containing asbestos, while making available high-tech materials at a reasonable cost.

In one of North AmericaÆs largest mines, which contains more than six active coal-producing faces, mine controllers must meet the complex challenge of adhering to the mine plan while also ensuring customer quality. Fleet management systems (FMS) provide many different avenues to control production flows, from the faces to the various pit crushers. Nonetheless, mine controllers must balance a variety of factors such as unplanned downs, differing customer demands, their own daily key performance indicators (KPIs) related to equipment utilisation, among others. Deviating from the short-term mine plan is the most common means of balancing the other factors, since adherence to the plan is traditionally only measured during the weekly variance meeting with engineering staff. However, such deviation may be one of the most costly responses, as long-term scheduling issues may arise such as multi-face dead-heading or insufficient stripping. This paper focuses on the development of a system for real-time adherence to mine plan within a control room environment. This system is part of a larger blending-focused, multi-million dollar project with elements of a centralised remote control room, developed at the University of ArizonaÆs Mining Information Systems and Operations Management (MISOM) Mine Control Center (MC2). The mine plan (MPL) component of the overall blending system integrates both historical and real-time FMS data with mine plan requirements directly sourced from original systems (no additional input required). The measures, displayed largely as graphs, have tools to help controllers manage the production to facilitate adherence to the plan. Some measures are designed to motivate crews to perform by inciting competition between crews, softened through a study of the controller culture. The MPL component was deployed at the mine, and the before and after deployment adherence was measured. This paper discusses the technical development of the new tool, its deployment, and an ethnography (study of culture) to understand controller motivation.

"In a continuing program of mapping glacial dispersal trains, near-surface till samples were collected down-ice from a copper-silver-gold prospect at Onaman River, Ontario, and down-ice from the past-producing gold district at Oldham, Nova Scotia. The program is designed to aid exploration by illustrating glacial dispersal from various types of known occurrences and by identifying postglacial processes that control drift composition at a detailed scale.Native gold was mined at Oldham from arsenopyrite-bearing saddle reef quartz veins in a dome in Early Paleozoic slates of the Meguma Group. Gold abundances greater than 10 ppb in till form a dispersal train at least 1900 m long. Gold abundances between 40 and 100 ppb occur in clusters up to 600 m down-ice from gold-bearing bedrock. Anomalous arsenic abundances in till form a broad train 1100 m long that is significantly different in shape from the gold train.At Onaman River, subeconomic amounts of Cu-Ag-Au occur in quartz lenses in Archean mafic volcanic rocks. A dispersal train defined by the distribution of mineralized boulders and increased abundances of Cu, Ag and Zn in till extends 600 m down-ice from mineralized bedrock. Gold abundances between 10 and 70 ppb do not define this dispersal train, but occur instead in clusters 300 to 600 m down-ice from mineralized bedrock. In vertical sections in the upper 2 m of copper-rich till, Au abundances vary sympathetically with Ag and Cu levels; however, there seems to be no preferential site of Au enrichment in the mineral portion of the soil profile.Several of the mineralized boulders at Onaman River are richer in Au and Ag than the mineralized bedrock from which they were derived. Although some of the high Au and Ag assays were caused by biased sampling of sulphide-rich portions of the boulders, many were caused by leaching of sulphide minerals from 'the boulders, which left a limonitic boxwork that is enriched in Au and Ag. A few of the Au-rich boulders may have been derived from an unknown bedrock source."

"Image-based rock fragmentation sensing in mining and quarry applications includes an important rock boundary delineation step, which is commonly referred to as rock segmentation. This paper presents a novel approach to solve this problem, using artificial intelligence. In the proposed technique, priorknowledge of previously analyzed images is encoded into mathematical/statistical models. A set of human labeled images are used as training inputs. These images are used to train neural networksthrough an optimization process. The networks can then be used in real time for rock delineation. "

"Geometallurgy is a discipline that seeks to improve the sustainability of the extraction of metals and minerals by promoting the smarter use of non-renewable resources, better energy efficiency and greater use of renewable energy. To achieve these goals, development of innovative technologies and approaches are being developed along the entire commodity value chain, starting with exploration and extraction and extending to reuse and recycling. This paper discusses the geometallurgy of industrial minerals with special emphasis on kaolin, a versatile industrial mineral applied in ceramics, paper, paint, plastics, rubber, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, ink, sealants, adhesives, sanitary ware, glass fibre, toothpaste, animal feed etc. Aspects of kaolin extraction in south-west UK are analysed from a geometallurgical perspective. While geometallurgy already features in kaolin extraction, its role can be significantly expanded by combining advanced in-pit characterisation and orebody modelling with integrated planning and control of the refining and calcination process. "The key technologies of a large rectangular pipe jacking machine with dimensions of 10.12m × 7.27m (width x height) include selection of rectangular cross-section cutting modes, analysis on the strength and stiffness of the rectangular shield, integrated control of electro-hydraulic proportional thrust systems and ground conditioning for excavation are presented in detail in this paper. These key technologies have been successfully applied and verified on site during tunneling, providing a new concept for the building of large rectangular traffic and pedestrian tunnels in urban areas for the future.1 INTRODUCTIONIn the past, underground tunnels were mainly used for drainage, sewage, utilities, metro tunnel, etc. and most of them had circular cross-sections. Recently, as a result of economic development, gradually accelerating urbanization process and diminishing ground space, underground tunnels have already become a new trend for urban underground space utilization. Due to the heavy traffic flow, the demands for rectangular cross-section underground tunnels, such as pedestrian underpass and road tunnel, are increasing gradually.The Rectangular pipe jacking machine (hereinafter referred to as RPJM) was firstly developed in Japan for the construction of metro station, pedestrian underpass, underwater tunnel by-passes, etc. Kazunaki Kawai et al. introduced a RPJM developed and manufactured by KOMATSU in 2002 [1]. Tosikazu Kubota et al. confirmed the rectangular tunnels’ superiority to circular tunnels with regard to larger inner cross-section and lower construction cost in their RPJM construction reports [2]. Compared to circular pipe jacking machines, a RPJM also has the merits of a higher inner tunnel space utilization ratio and is able to excavate in shallow overburden areas. As shown in Figure 1, the effective area of a rectangular tunnel is more than 20% higher than that of an equivalent circular tunnel."

The Carlin Trend is one of the most significant gold mining districts in North America. Located in northeastern Nevada, a total of over 17 million ounces of gold have been produced since 1965 at Newmont Gold Company's open-pit and underground operations. Oxidized portions of the sediment-hosted, disseminated gold deposits at Carlin generally consist of finely disseminated concentrations of sub-micron sized native gold particles hosted in Paleozoic siliciclastic or carbonate rock. Oxide ore is commonly amenable to dump leach or heap leach processing, yielding an average 50 to 70% recovery of total contained gold. Refractory unoxidized ore requires some form of pretreatment oxidation to ensure economic gold recovery. Geologic ore control is typically combined with standard assay and engineering techniques to maintain both grade and metallurgical control ofleach grade ores. Mine geologists provide a vital function through field observation and recording ofmineralogic data during daily, visual blasthole logging. Intricately mixed refractory materials must be separated from oxide ore to ensure highest possible gold recoveries. Geologic information is combined with assay data to create mine polygons in an engineering computer database. Mining selectivity is further enhanced by in-pit ore control geologists who are available to make production decisions based on direct mineralogic observations at active mine faces.

The business of mineral exploration and development has become much more than simply a problem of locating orebodies and designing mines. Favorable economic analysis of mining and processing feasibility is no longer sufficient to justify the development of a mine. New laws, enacted by virtually every level of government, require comprehensive land use planning, environmental analysis, mineland reclamation, mine safety studies, and many other considerations. This profusion of new laws says in effect, that the mining company is no longer responsible only to its stockholders. Mineral development today can be compared to a partnership. As in all partnerships, the risks and liabilities as well as the benefits are held jointly by all the participants. In addition to the mining operator, this partnership consists of the public, through its many levels of government, interest groups, and individual citizens. Therefore, you&apos;d better know your partner very well - his responsibilities and capabilities. Mining is considered a high risk venture. The risk on the part of the operator and the lending institutions has long been recognized. The risk that the public and its government take in these mining ventures has now been recognized also. The people and their government have learned that they inherit, through abandonment or forfeiture, the mistakes and problems of individuals and companies regarding these natural resources. In looking through the "Mining Engineering Handbook" recently published by the Society of Mining Engineers, I noted that in their discussion of liability for excavations, the authors quoted from the book of Exodus, 20th chap., where Moses said to his people: "When a man leaves a pit open, or when a man digs a pit and does not cover it, and an ox or an ass falls into it, the owner of the pit shall make it good; he shall give money to its owner, and the dead beast

"It is widely accepted that bulk ore sorting could provide a step change in processing of low-grade ores. For this to be achieved a rapid, accurate bulk sensor of grade is required as well as sufficient natural variation of grade in the ore stream. CSIRO trialled a magnetic resonance (MR) sensor capable of measuring chalcopyrite, and by inference total copper grade, on the 1300 t/h Ridgeway portal conveyor. The gauge produced an unprecedented set of data down to a 1 t scale for months at a time. This paper analyses the measured variation and compares it to a simple model derived from the bore core data and mixing within the block cave mine.The model of the small-scale (&lt;1000 t) variation is developed using fractal methods which have successfully been used in the past for copper porphyry deposits showing a power law or near power law distribution of copper grade and vein sizes. These fractal distributions have two features highly favourable for segregating ore, a large proportion of low-grade pods and the large-scale spatial clustering of grade. We show the presence of fractal ordering in bore core data at short range in the Cadia Ridgeway porphyry deposit and measure its persistence in the crushed rock produced by the Ridgeway block cave mine over one month. The model is then extended to demonstrate the effect of varying head grade, mixing and pod (or diversion) weight on bulk sorting efficiency.CITATION:Coghill, P J, Miljak, D, McGann, A, 2016. "In the differential metal sulfide ore flotation it is desirable to replace the toxic inorganic depressants with environmentally benign chemicals. Chitosan, as a natural and non-toxic polymer, has been proven to be an efficient depressant for chalcopyrite while allowing galena to be floated by xanthate collectors. However, the poor solubility of chitosan limits its potential applications as the flotation could only be carried out at about pH 4 where chitosan is soluble. A carboxymethyl derivative of chitosan, named N-carboxymethyl chitosan (N-CMC), was synthesized by substituting the amino groups of chitosan with carboxymethyl groups. The substitution significantly improved the solubility of chitosan. The structure of N-CMC was studied and compared with chitosan via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Flotation tests were performed on single minerals and mineral mixtures (with weight ratio of 1:1) with the addition of appropriate amount of potassium ethyl xanthate (KEX) and N-CMC. The solution pH was varied from neutral to alkaline. The flotation concentrates and tailings were collected and analysed for the contents of copper and lead. FTIR measurements showed that new peaks of C=O stretching of -COOH and N-H deformation of -NH- appeared in N-CMC, which indicated that the carboxymethyl groups were introduced and the amino groups were the sites for the substitution. Flotation results indicated that N-CMC could depress either chalcopyrite or galena depending on the pH. The results were not affected by the sequence of KEX and N-CMC addition. Therefore, N-CMC is potentially useful in Cu-Pb sulfide separation following a bulk Cu-Pb flotation. The N-CMC was also found to have surface cleaning functions, and was able to remove contaminating copper ions from galena surfaces. Therefore, its application in sulfide ore flotation is expected to be more robust than the original chitosan."

The Polokwane Smelter Complex (PSC) relies on a single 68MW high-intensity six-in-line furnace to smelt a planned 650 000 t/a dry concentrate to produce a platinum group metals (PGM)-bearing matte. As typical of a greenfields venture, considerable attention was paid to the project development and implementation stages of design, engineering, construction and commissioning. Somewhat unusual though, was the role of a dedicated multi-disciplinary "Operational Readiness" and support team, comprising the owners team and specialists from the furnace designer, HATCH, to effect a safe and rapid ramp-up to the design smelter capacity of 68MW. The challenges encountered in developing an effective partnership will be discussed. The modus operandi and roles of the "Operational Readiness" team during the design, procurement, construction and commissioning stages as well as that of the operational support team within the overall ramp-up objective will be presented. "The Mount Todd gold mine is located approximately 50 km (31 miles) north of the town of Katherine in the Northern Territory (NT) of Australia just off the Stewart Highway, and was operated in the 1990s until 2000 (Fig. 1). After cessation of mining operations, meteoric precipitation and acid rock drainage (ARD) associated with surface water runoff continued to report to the retention ponds across the mine site. In 2000, the mine site entered receivership and the NT government became responsible for the care and maintenance program. In 2006, Vista Gold Corp. (as Vista Gold Australia) acquired the rights to resume exploration on the mine site without the financial responsibility of the environmental liability. In January 2007, Vista Gold assumed the care and maintenance activities on behalf of the NT government, with the environmental liability remaining with the NT government, with the goal of reinitiating mining operations. A critical path component of the planned upgrades to the existing mine/milling facilities and infrastructure was the development of a cost effective treatment and dewatering program for the approximately 11 GL (2,900 million gal) of ARD stored in the Batman Pit (RP3), which has a maximum capacity of approximately 12 GL (3,200 million gal). The Batman Pit must be dewatered in order for Vista Gold to restart mining activities. The Batman Pit Lake had reached a maximum water depth of 104 m (341 ft) when Vista Gold initiated water level monitoring. It is important to note that the ARD water in the Batman Pit has been pumped into it from 2000 to 2012 under an NT government-approved environmental control program.The Batman Pit has virtually no connection to the local ground water regime due to the intensive silicification that accompanied the mineralizing event. In October 2012, just prior to treatment, the pit lake profile was characterized by uniform acidic pH (approximately pH 3.2) and oxic conditions (dissolved oxygen greater than 7 mg/L with depth (Fig. 2). The temperature decreased by approximately 4 °C (39 °F) between the lake surface and approximately 20 m (66 ft) deep, and remained near constant with increasing depth. This temperature difference is believed to be associated with an existing shallow mine bench at approximately 20 m (66 ft) deep around the perimeter of the pit. Similarly, electrical conductivity, an estimate of total dissolved solids, decreased by about 85 microSiemens per centimeter (µS/cm) from 2,800 to 2,715 µS/cm between 10 and 20 m (33 and 66 ft)."
