The Archaean Yilgam craton has been a major gold province since 1888 with production and reserves of about 4700 tonnes. Production in 1994 was about 135 tonnes. The largest deposit, the famous Kalgoorlie Golden Mile, contains about 2000 tonnes of gold. About 40 deposits containing more than 35 tonnes (1Moz) of gold has been discovered so far in the Yilgarn. Most of the craton has deep weathering profiles inherited from previous tropical climatic conditions, modified by subsequent arid conditions. A mantle of transported material covers much of the variably stripped weathering profiles. Resolving the geology of the volcanic-sedimentary units (greenstones) and the structures that host the gold mineralization relies heavily on aeromagnetics and shallow drilling.

Talc is used as an essential ingredient in a wide variety of plastics applications ranging from polyester body patch compounds through polypropylene automotive, appliance, and household furniture components to high performance parts made from liquid crystal engineering resins. The paper focuses on polyolefin applications; the three tier market for talc in polypropylene; the effects of various talcs in typical compounds; and trends in each market segment. Emphasis is given to emerging markets, examples of which are polypropylene compounds which mimic higher cost resins, and polyethylene films, customer requirements for talcs for these purposes are discussed.

Barrick Gold Corporation installed an expert style control system on the grinding circuit at its Mercur mine. Barrick's main objective was to increase mill throughput by a minimum of 3%. The expert system team collected operating data and then created a knowledge base using Comdale/X expert system development software. The expert system moved from on-line "advisory" mode, testing of expert rules, to full process control in four weeks. Expert system control benefits include a 9-15% increase in mill throughput, consistent mill loading leading to less wear on SAG mill parts, and improved downstream process control.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the New Mexico Bureau of Mines is conducting an assessment of mineral resources in the 36,800 km2 Mimbres Resource Area, southwestern New Mexico. Included in the assessment is a literature-based evaluation of sand and gravel that utilizes third party geologic information. The USGS has developed a method based on existing 1:500,000 scale geologic maps supplemented by remote sensing, statistical models, and point data such as test hole or pit records. The method defines the areal extent, quality, and quantity of aggregate.

"From June 16 to 19, more than 1,400 tunneling and underground construction professionals gathered in Chicago, IL for the bienial Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC). There, they were greeted by a full technical program and an exciting exhibit hall that provided a comprehensive look at the world’s bustling tunneling and underground construction industry.The successful conference was a reflection of the industry itself, which is to say, busy. As much of the world has begun to focus on creating a cleaner and greener environment, the global tunneling industry has seen an uptick in infrastructure projects move from design-build to construction phase. With a global shift away from the use of fossil fuels, major cities around the world are looking to increase public transportation options, which leads to the need for more transportation tunnels. And as urban populations continue to grow, the need for clean water calls for more tunnels, and as urban footprints continue to expand, the need to increase and update combined sewage overflow tunnel grows with them.During two and a half days, more than 20 sessions covering all of these topics were presented at the Hyatt Regency in Chicago, many to packed rooms in which every seat was taken and people were standing along the side and back walls.RETC is a biennial conference and one of the largest in the North America for the tunneling and underground construction industries. As such, it hosts a robust exhibit floor. This year 172 vendors occupied 205 booth spaces. The exhibit included everything from tunnel boring machine manufacturers, like Robbins and Herrenknecht, to the companies that supply all kinds of parts and services to the industry."

The adsorption of zinc species onto silica in ammonical solutions has been studied. Adsorption isotherms reveal that increasing adsorption occurs as the solution pH is made more alkaline. Fr-IR spectroscopy revealed that the adsorbed species is a zinc ammine complex.

Three high performance TBM's equipped with large diameter (483mm) disc cutters are currently operating in Norway. This paper summarizes the design philosophy, field performance and ongoing technical development of these cutters. Included are discussions of the early problems encountered with their usage and the solutions to these problems that have been developed. Also included are discussions of the penetration rates and cutter usages observed. From this data it is concluded that high performance TBM's with large diameter cutters can produce significant improvements in both overall performance and in cutter costs under hard rock conditions.

Machine Situational Awareness (MSA) requires the ability to efficiently evaluate the probability of interaction of objects within the environment, without creating false alarms or ignoring materializing hazards. To do this, an MSA system needs to assign context to observed object activity and integrate as much information about object identity, kinematics, behavior, and current state as possible. This paper describes how known object characteristics, attributes, and activities (drilling, dumping, driving, etc.) can refine interaction probabilities and help identify rogue actors that introduce anomalous risks to the health and safety of miners. Path projections need to incorporate velocity and direction as a function of time while accounting for terrain, safety response, environmental factors, current assigned activity, etc. This paper also describes the methodology for properly prioritizing responses to place the highest value on human safety.

The purpose of this paper is to outline briefly some basic principles of ground-water hydrology that have application in mine hydrology and to suggest that an understanding of these principles can help to forestall problems that are internal as regards mining operations and external as regards damage or harm to surrounding areas. The development of a mine below the water table pleads for accurate values to answers of hydrologic problems. Such internal problems involve both an inflow of water without adequate drainage facilities and a deficiency of water for the required mining or milling use. Methods which give acceptable quantitative values for the solution of many ground-water problems depend on rather simple geologic structures, characterized chiefly by homogeneous rocks of considerable areal extent. Unfortunately, mining operations are likely to be centered where rocks are not homogeneous. Consequently, methods that attempt to show values of the storage and transmitting capacity of rocks in mining areas must be applied with caution. In spite of complex geology and apparent uniqueness of individual mines and quarries, adherence to some concepts of ground-water occurrence and movement should be helpful to mine operators. Mining operations that extend below the water table disturb the natural hydrologic regimen. Prior to development, the water table slopes away from the site of a mine in at least one direction, but as soon as development begins and water is removed from the mine, the mine becomes the apex of a depressed cone in the water table, causing a convergence in the flow of water toward the mine, The behavior of the cone of depression, as it tends to deepen and to increase in areal extent when the mine is deepened, is related to the rate of withdrawal of water necessary to keep the mine dry. The significance and nature of the cone of depression in the vicinity of pumped wells has been studied by ground-water hydrologists for years, but the cone caused by pumping water from mines has generally been less systematically appraised. "In order to conserve the coal resources, many coal mines which have been mined begin to re-mine. Re-mining face is of complicated circumstances and coal spontaneous combustion is unknown, so experiments are designed to study the characteristics of multiple oxidized coal samples. The investigation into the oxidation of coal is conducive to the safe mining of the coal seam groups and thick coal seams. The non-caking coal is collected as coal samples. The raw coal sample with initial oxidation and the sample after second oxidation and third oxidation are obtained after a certain treatment of the coal. The temperature-programmed system, and proximate and ultimate analysis are adopted to compare the releases of gaseous products of spontaneous combustion characteristic parameters of the multiple oxidized coal sample. With the increase of oxidation times, experimental results indicate that the oxygen consumption rate, the release rate of carbon monoxide and the intensity of heat release are significantly decrease. The characteristic temperature dropped and the size of the pores in coal is smaller as well. INTRODUCTION China accounts for 13% of global coal resources [1-2]. In recent years, more and more coal mines begin to re-mine in order to conserve resources. This production mode is to mine coal pillar left by last exploitation or unavailable for mining. In the process of slicing mining for coal seam groups or thick coal seams, the second or multiple oxidation due to the mining-induced effect, may take place in the goaf of the lower seam. So the spontaneous combustion is prone to occur in this area. The study on oxidation of coal is conducive to the safe mining of the coal seam groups and thick coal seams. Scholars [3-7] have discussed the workability of re-mining for coal mines, verify the feasibility of the existing mining technology for re-mining area, and set up the prevention measures of coal spontaneous combustion. But all these measures are only based on on-site observation data, instead of experiment on spontaneous combustion characteristic parameters of re-mining coal samples which have a great importance for early prediction and forecast. The authors aim at investigating the multiple-oxidated coal spontaneous combustion law, and perfecting the coal spontaneous combustion mechanism to provide a basis for the prediction and forecast."

"Sepiolite is a magnesium-rich, porous, and fibrous clay mineral with broad applications. These applications take advantage of sepiolite’s high specific surface area and unique nano-sized channel structure. Over the past years, numerous materials and techniques based on the structure and property of sepiolite have been developed. This article reviewed the recent achievements in developments and applications of sepiolite in environmental protection, catalysis area, and nanocomposites. The prospectives of sepiolite applications is also discussed. INTRODUCTION Sepiolite is a magnesium-rich, porous, and fibrous clay mineral. The typical chemical formula of sepiolite is Si12Mg8O30[OH]4[OH2]4·8H2O [1]. Sepiolite has a high specific surface area and nano-sized channels because of its special structure [2]. This unusual crystal structure projected onto the [001] plane is shown in Fig.1 [3]. As it can be seen, silicon and oxygen atoms make up for the tetrahedral structure and magnesium and oxygen atoms form octahedral structure, respectively. Those tetrahedral-octahedral-tetrahedral ribbons expand boundlessly in one direction, leading to the special fibrous structure of the sepiolite. Every tetrahedral-octahedral-tetrahedral ribbon is combined to the next by an inverted Si–O–Si bond, which causes an interlaced layer with a continuous tetrahedral sheet and a discontinuous octahedral sheet. Terminal MgO at the edges of the ribbons is coordinated with two structural water molecules, which can form hydrogen bonds with zeolitic water molecules that are located in the channels running parallel to the fiber axis [3,4]. The Mg2+ ions inside the channels can be exchanged with other cations in solution. Therefore, sepiolite can be used to remove metal cations from aqueous solutions [5,6].It can be seen from Figure. 1 and Table 1 [7], the unique structure endows sepiolite with a substantial surface area and nanoscale channels. Its specific surface area reaches 320 m2/g and channel dimensions up to 3.7×10.6 Å. There are three active adsorption sites on the surface of sepiolite: one is oxygen atoms of the Si-O tetrahedron. The second is the structural water molecules paired with magnesium ions at the edges of the ribbons, which can form hydrogen bond with adsorbent. The last one is the Si-OH groups due to the breaks of the Si-O-Si bonds on the surface of Si-O tetrahedron. Thus, sepiolite has strong adsorption ability which has been widely used in environmental protection. Moreover, sepiolite has many significant features such as good mechanical and thermal stability, rheological property, porous, and easily modification, making it be a hotspot in chemical and biological researches. However, with the development of technology, broader and more advanced applications of sepiolite have been carried out in recent years. In this study, the recent achievement in sepiolite applications is summarized, the further tendency is also discussed."

Sustained elevated metal and coal prices in 2011 continued to drive mining projects across British Columbia. The province is the top producer of copper, exporter of coal and the only producer of molybdenum in Canada. The province also produces significant amounts of gold, silver, lead and zinc and more than 30 industrial minerals. The total 2011 value of solid metal production is an estimated $8.6 billion and the outlook for 2012 is positive. British Columbia is poised to bring several new mines onstream in the next few years. Construction continues at the New Afton and Mt Milligan copper-gold projects that are anticipated to be open in 2012 and 2013, respectively. The provincial Environmental Assessment Office indicates there are 26 mine proposals in process with three currently under review and 23 in the preapplication stage. The following text briefly describes 2011 metal and coal mining activities in the five regions reported on by the provinces? regional geologists (Fig. 1).

It is clear that precise overground and under-ground mapping is an important factor for all designers. Due to rapid changes in underground construction, tunnel designers are increasingly in need of updating project information. This article explains the latest techniques for detecting under-ground utilities as well as underground mapping. Global Positioning System (GPS) is a very ac-curate and popular navigation and mapping system that has been used extensively above ground, but is not used for underground mapping as signals are not strong enough to pass through ground or water. Most underground techniques were developed for military applications during the first and second world wars. Later, the techniques became public. For example, ground penetrating radar was developed for the military in 1970 to be used for locating tunnels under the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea. Later, the same technique was used for detecting unexploded ordinance such as plastic land mines.

The prestressed concrete industry in particular, and the precast concrete industry to some extent, are rank newcomers to the concrete construction field compared to the cement, ready-mixed or concrete masonry industries. This young industry reflects its youth and vigor in its enthusiasm, optimism and the belief that it can reach any goal it chooses to set -- and it is setting its sights high. The prestressed and precast concrete industry fully expects to become the major structural and architectural material by the 1980's. Before exploring how the industry expects to reach this goal, a brief look at the origins and the growth of the industry may be useful in an evaluation of the feasibility of this goal. It was always recognized that concrete, strong and efficient for supporting loads which cause compression, was weak and inefficient when used to carry loads which induce tension. Thus the reason for reinforced concrete in which the concrete efficiently carries the compression in a flexural member while low grade steel bars reinforce the concrete in the areas 'of tensile stress. (Fig. 1). The steel being relatively inexpensive, can passively, but quite effectively carry tensile force while the concrete carries compression. The concrete in contact with the reinforcing also protects the steel from corrosion and acts as insulation to provide a superior "built-in" fire resistance. The major disadvantage of reinforced concrete relative to its main competitor, steel, is its weight in relation to its load-carrying capacity. In this paper, an innovative concept in longwall tailgate support is discussed. This new concept utilizes a new high capacity roof truss system in lieu of conventional wooden crib block. The first field test was conducted at Bailey Mine and was very successful. Similar tests have been installed in other mines and seams. An extensive instrumentation plan was designed and implemented in the truss test area. The test data has shown that the dynamic roof truss system effectively controls the various abutment pressures caused by longwall mining thus maintaining a stable tailgate entry.

A new mining project can raise questions about what effect it will have on the community after it closes. Historically, little was done by communities to plan for and accommodate the changes in the economic infrastructure when a mine project is finished either after the ore runs out or if market conditions deteriorate and make it unprofitable. Projects that were underfunded were generally unable to withstand periodic market downturns. However, data in a recent study conducted by the Seidman Research Institute leads to the conclusion that, even when a mining project is terminated, there can be (and, in the specific case studied, is) a residual beneficial economic effect in the community, which lasts for a long period of time.

One of the most important problems facing the coal industry today is the disposal of refuse from the coal preparation plants in a safe, economical, and efficient manner while complying with all legal requirements. The most commonly used refuse disposal method has been landfill/impoundment. In this method, the coarser refuse fractions are disposed of by layering and compaction into a landfill. The fine coal slurry refuse fraction is impounded in a dam constructed of a portion or all of the coarser refuse fractions. The failure of an impoundment at Buffalo Creek, Saunders, West Virginia and the sliding failure of a coarse refuse pile at Aberfan, Wales, England, resulted in an evaluation of refuse disposal methods by various regulatory agencies as well as coal producers. The result of this evaluation was the promulgation of Federal regulations dealing with the preparation, operation, and final abandonment of coal refuse disposal areas. As a consequence of these regulations the use of the landfill/impoundment method of disposal became in some cases economically unfeasible or technically impossible. At the time of the promulgation of the new Federal regulations, United States Steel Corporation was in the process of designing the Cumberland preparation plant. As a result of the new regulations

Newmont Mining Corp. has been producing gold from the Carlin Trend for more than 45 years. Naturally, the focus, scale and complexity of the operations have changed considerably during this time. Newmont discovered and developed the Carlin Main orebody that is located about 32 km (20 miles) north of Carlin, NV. The property was developed as a one-mine, one-gold mill treatment plant operation, which produced about 6.2 t/a (200,000 oz/year) of doré gold bars. The initial mine, mill and gold refining facilities were relatively small in comparison to today?s standards. The milling circuit used the Merrill-Crowe zinc precipitation process to recover dissolved gold and prepare a concentrated precious metal ?precipitate? to be melted into a doré bar for sale.

In this paper, the flotation rule and behaviors of kyanite-group polymerphous minerals were studied in modified Hallimond tube in detail. Furthermore, the energy change of collector/mineral systems before and after adsorption and the net charge densities of the atoms on the minerals surfaces were calculated by use of quantum chemistry. The flotabilities in minerals were successfully explained.

New Mexico?s active coal mines have reclamation challenges that are being successfully resolved through the application of geomorphic grading methods. Soils and overburden material are often of poor quality, and annual precipitation is low. Revegetation on south and west aspect slopes often failed to persist. The New Mexico Mining and Minerals Division had therefore been encouraging topographic diversity on reclamation to improve water harvesting and reduce the percentage of south aspect slopes. Steeply dipping, multiple coal seams may be mined by open pit methods. Structurally-controlled trellis drainage patterns that exist premine have to be replaced with dendritic drainage patterns on reclamation where the overburden had been pulverized. Sodic spoil material is prone to differential settling and the creation of piping features in areas where runoff ponds, which may lead to downslope instability. In each of these scenarios, the approximation of natural drainage patterns on the reclamation has reduced erosion and sedimentation by creating shorter slopes with correct profiles, and by improving conditions for revegetation establishment.
