The business objectives of a metallurgical project determine targets and constraints, such as the range of products, production capacities, in-service dates, and capital and operating cost parameters. Permitting is usually left to the project team, as are decisions regarding site location, technology, and construction approach. Success requires an orderly methodology, represented in this book by front end loading (FEL) phases: FEL1 examines several alternative approaches; FEL2 ranks and eliminates less economically or technically attractive options; and FEL3 develops the preferred option to the point of major permit completion, with defined scope, schedule, and cost to submit for approval to proceed with implementation in FEL4. Working through FEL1, FEL2, and FEL3, the project definition improves, estimates become more accurate, and project risks are reduced. The project design basis at the end of FEL3 is the control document for project implementation in FEL4.

"With the purpose of increasing the extrudability of lean alloys, we reduce levels of the alloying elements Mg and Si in a 6xxx extrusion alloy. To avoid sacrificing strength, we investigate the compensating effect of smaller amounts of lithium and germanium, alone and in combination. Recent studies by atomically resolved high angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) together with density functional theory (DFT) calculations have demonstrated that while Li replaces Mg, Ge substitutes Si in the columns in the hardening ß’’-phase. Several studies have shown that Ge replaces Si in other precipitates as well, and that both Li and Ge promote precipitation and can improve macroscopic properties, like strength and thermal stability. The scope of the current work has been to investigate and document the combined effect of the two alloying elements. Of the investigated alloys, the one containing both elements displayed highest hardness, corresponding with a significant increase in precipitate number density. We used HAADF-STEM to determine the extent of Li and Ge in the precipitate structures.INTRODUCTION The two most important alloying agents, with respect to age hardening of the 6xxx alloy series, are Mg and Si. In general, 6xxx alloys are formed into their final shapes by rolling or extrusion, before being age-hardened at elevated temperatures around 180°C. The hardening effect during this stage is due to the formation of metastable, semi-coherent, precipitate needles along the three < 001>Al directions generally following the precipitation sequence (Marioara, Nordmark, Andersen, & Holmestad, 2006): Supersaturated solid solution ? atomic clusters ? The last three decades have seen significant mining development in northern regions of Canada, where the freeze and thaw cycle of permafrost and the corresponding surface subsidence and heave represent a significant challenge to the design and maintenance of infrastructures. Identifying areas at risk is of great assistance to reduce the impact of this issue. Over the past ten years, Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry (InSAR) has been widely used to monitor ground surface deformation. With this technique, changes in phase between two SAR acquisitions are used to detect centimeter to millimeter surface displacements over a large area and with high spatial resolution. InSAR can be used as a tool to assist the siting and design of new infrastructure as well as highlighting the risk to existing structures in areas of unstable terrain. This paper presents the results of a project carried out by Effigis, which made use of SAR interferometry in the context of monitoring terrain and infrastructure stability in a northern mining environment that is affected by permafrost seasonal and long term changes. TerraSAR-X images acquired during two periods, August to November 2012 and March to October 2013, were used to measure the deformations and/or movement of ground surface, infrastructure and stockpiles caused by seasonal changes in permafrost extent in and around a mining site located in Nunavik, Quebec. The results showed that spatial and temporal distributions of surface displacements are in accordance with scientific and terrain knowledge. Some displacements were observed in loose soil areas while, as expected, none were detected in bedrock and rock outcrop areas. The areas most affected by active layer changes showed surface subsidence in the thaw settlement period. This study confirms that SAR interferometry has a great potential for operational applications related to risks induced by surface deformation in mining environments. It shows that this technique can be used to produce reliable maps of surface movement and monitor the vertical displacement of important infrastructure.

"SART technology is a useful tool for improving the economics of gold recovery from certain types of complex gold ores. SART liberates cyanide consumed by base metals such as copper, zinc and nickel, and enables the newly freed cyanide to be recycled to precious metals leaching while producing high-grade base metal sulphide concentrates for sale. The benefits of SART include the reduction in cyanide consumption, avoidance of cyanide destruction costs, minimization of risks of environmental non-compliance due to residues of cyanide destruction reporting to mine effluents, and generation of extra revenue from the sale of base metal concentrates. Concerns with SART typically include uncertainties around capital and operating costs and proper integration of SART into the overall metallurgical flowsheet. This paper presents two case studies addressing these concerns. The first involves actual costs of the full scale SART integrated into a gold heap leach operation and treating up to 500 m3/hr of leach solution at a mine in Mexico. The second involves field pilot testing and a preliminary cost estimate for integrating SART into a silver mine in Peru using Merrill Crowe.INTRODUCTION One of the current trends in the gold industry globally is the increasing importance of complex polymetallic gold deposits as discoveries of large Carlin type gold deposits become increasingly rare (Sceresini, 2005). The presence of cyanide soluble copper and zinc in complex gold deposits necessitates changes in traditional gold extraction metallurgical flowsheets. One of the tools available to the industry to help deal with interferences of cyanide-soluble base metals in gold extraction is the SART (sulphidization-acidification-recycling-thickening) process. SART breaks the weak acid dissociable (WAD) base metal-cyanide complexes, precipitates the metals as high-grade sulphide concentrates and makes the freed cyanide available for recycle. Although SART is a commercially available technology, it is still relatively new to the industry. Fewer than ten (10) full scale plants have been constructed in the past couple of decades. Some of these SART plants are small, most are located at remote sites, and the majority have not operated on a continuous basis. This has resulted in a general lack of information in the industry about the true costs, operability and metallurgical performance of SART. BQE Water has been involved in the design, construction, commissioning and operation of large scale SART plants in Mexico, Turkey and Chile and has conducted field testing programs as part of the technical assessment of SART integration into various metallurgical circuits. Having built and operated numerous plants utilizing selective sulphide precipitation of heavy metals, BQE Water has gained unique insight into the design and control of the sulphidization stage of SART to minimize costs and ensure high efficiency in cyanide recovery."

"Tremendous progress has been made in recent years towards developing computational tools that allow ready solution of most common rock engineering problems, with amongst the most advanced of the tools focusing on evaluating engineered openings within Synthetic Rock Masses. These new codes have the potential to allow much more realistic design, but they must not be used without careful calibration – prior to – during and – post completion of any modelling. This paper explores some of the pitfalls of inadequate data collection and suggests more emphasis be given to calibration. Guidelines for minimum levels of parameter data are suggested for improving application of basic to sophisticated modelling codes.INTRODUCTION & BACKGROUNDTremendous progress has been made in recent years towards developing computational tools that allow ready solution of most common rock engineering problems. The degree of sophistication now possible with some of the available codes allows one to tackle extremely complex problems that were not thought tractable even a decade ago. Indeed, generation of synthetic numerical rock masses, based on discrete fracture network representations that closely mimic actual rock mass conditions, such as are shown in Figure 1, is today relatively straightforward, and not as user-challenging as employing state-of-the-art codes of even a few decades ago. This is largely because major improvements in computer graphics and in availability of ready-made user-friendly input-output interfaces have paralleled development of these new codes, now in some cases outpacing actual new analytical/procedure developments. This is something of a reversal from the first few decades of DOS-based rock engineering computational experience, when only rudimentary graphics were available and user-friendly input-output interfaces were virtually non-existent."

"Ecstall Mining Limited was formed to operate the Kidd Creek mine, discovered by Texasgulf Incorporated in 1961 the orebody is geologically very complex, containing rich values of zinc, copper, silver and lead. The first phase of the operation involved an open pit, railroad and concentrator complex, which was under construction in 1965 and began operations in late 1966. The open pit, with rim dimensions of 2,000 by 1,000 feet, was computer-designed and highlights excellent wall control and efficient ore extraction and grade control. The railroad was built over the worst type of muskeg country, but it has been well maintained, resulting in an uninterrupted supply of ore in the trains. The 10,000-tpd concentrator, located 17 miles from the mine, is highly instrumented and automated. It features computer control of reagents and, in addition to the copper, zinc and lead flotation circuits, has a modern gravity tin plant. The concentrator is large, because very fine grinding is required for good metallurgy and nearly 2,500 tons per day of concentrates are produced. In 1969, work was started on the underground mine to take over from the open pit; it began partial production in mid-1973. The mine is highly instrumented, has a ramp from surface, a high-production shaft, an underground gyratory crusher and an efficient orehandling system, and employs the latest mining techniques. The electrolytic zine plant, rated at 120,000 tons of slab zinc per year, started operation in April, 1972, with batch leaching and purification circuits. It has been converted to continuous leaching and is now in the process of converting to continuous purification. Further modernization and automation will be carried out in the next few years. Five service departments support the five operating departments. These are maintenance, engineering and technical services, geology, administration and employee relations. How these ten departments function and work together using the most advanced technology to produce an efficient operation is the main theme of the Ecstall Story."

After German reunification the mining industry in former East Germany was profoundly restructured. Beside privatization of profitable companies the public sector took over responsibility for the mining operations to be shut down. Therefore state-owned companies cope with technical, ecological, and social challenges. The rehabilitation and reclamation has to rededicate former mining areas to new use and provided new jobs as well. In the lignite mining districts there are around 100,000 ha of mining area, a mining caused disturbance to the groundwater balance and to the system of surface water bodies of approx. 390,000 ha. They are called the largest landscape construction site in Europe. In addition to the results and diverse experience achieved over the past 23 years, a description will follow of our new challenges and of an outlook on remaining tasks. This article will describe the financing, as well as aspects of the jobcreation policy arising from lignite industry remediation.

"Energy efficiency in mining and minerals processing has attracted considerable public and industry attention because of the significant quantities of energy consumption involved. In this context the question of what are worthwhile targets for energy efficiency improvements ought to be of the highest priority. It is however worth taking a step back to avoid falling in the trap of taking preconceived ideas that have been reiterated repeatedly before as gospel. The aim of this paper is to highlight areas where new or alternative approaches could potentially be the better way forward. Some may come as a surprise to conventional industry thinking. Ultimately any such solutions are attractive to practitioners not just in an environmental but also in an economic sense, and hence should be targeted through applied research and development efforts. This paper highlights key aspects of each group of opportunities and some of the individual approaches to provide an overview of the current status quo.MINING INDUSTRY POWER UTILISATION – WHERE IS THE BIGGEST BANG FOR THE BUCK?The question of where is the biggest bang for the buck when trying to determine worthwhile targets for energy efficiency improvements has not always been reported on broadly enough, typically because industry practitioners operate in specific areas of expertise and comfort zone. Looking beyond the familiar doesn’t always come easy. Any technology or methodology consideration to address energy efficiency needs to take into account the context of alternative opportunities of superior value or risks not achieving desired uptake. The following sub-chapters have been ordered by magnitude of improvement potential as best as is possible, starting with the biggest first, and the smallest last. Some may be a surprise relative to conventional mining industry thinking."

The Jinping-I double curvature arch dam, located in the middle reach of the Yalong River and with a maximum height of 305 m, is the world highest dam of the same type that has been completed. Since the second and third periods of the reservoir impounding, after which the reservoir water level was raised by about 200 m, a significant amount of leakage was observed out of the drainage holes deployed in the lowest drainage tunnel at the left-bank abutment at EL. 1595 m, with a pressure of 0.3 MPa at one typical hole when it was blocked. In this study, a number of analyses including water quality analysis, digital borehole imaging, tunnel geological mapping and in-situ groundwater monitoring were performed to investigate the source of leaking, the leakage passages and the performance of the grouting curtains. An inverse modeling procedure combining the orthogonal design, finite element forward modeling of the transient seepage flow, artificial neural network and genetic algorithm was invoked to further evaluate the permeability of the foundation rocks whose permeability was underestimated in design, using the in-situ measurements of flow rate and piezometric head. The geological structures that lead to the leakage were identified and the seepage flow behaviors in the dam foundation and the left bank abutment were assessed. Given the connectivity nature of the sub-vertically oriented fractures that induce the leakage event, it is found that some of the drainage holes with relative larger amount of discharge could be closed or blocked for reducing the amount of leakage without remarkably increasing the pore water pressure in the foundation rocks.

Environmentally assisted cracks in linepipe steels are initiated either as a result of stresses in combination with environmental effects, as in stress corrosion cracking (SCC), or as a result of trapped hydrogen in the steel, as in hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC). To understand better the mechanism of the crack initiation process, key metallurgical and environmental elements that can affect the cracking phenomena were investigated and are reviewed in this paper. The complexity of both cracking phenomena results from the dependence of SCC and HIC on multiple metallurgical, mechanical, and environmental parameters that may all influence both crack initiation and propagation; e.g., composition, microstructure and non-metallic inclusions in the steel, applied stress, water chemistry in the field, and ionic concentrations in the groundwater near the pipe surface to name a few for SCC. In addition, for HIC phenomena, one can add the concentration of H2S in the fluids transported in the pipe as well as concentration of CO2, pH, etc. In this paper, cracking of linepipe steels is analyzed critically, with particular attention to the crack initiation process. The paper is divided into two parts: The first part covers SCC and the second covers HIC.

While new jobs and taxes are major incentives for support of mining, stakeholders must also be assured that current jobs, resources and environment will be protected. Mining companies can help achieve stakeholder support by frankly addressing Acid Rock Drainage CARD) issues. To prevent ARD, miners must begin early in the mine life-cycle to develop an ARD management plan and integrate it into the mining operation. As this proactive preventative program is initiated, mining companies also need to engage and collaborate with stakeholders to insure that their expectations and needs are met. Stakeholder engagement is enhanced as mining companies emphasizes the value of clean and available water for current and future generations.

Field experimental cells were constructed in 2007 to assess the performance of different cover scenarios for the reclamation of the Parc 1 tailings disposal facility at the Westwood-Doyon Mine site (Abitibi, Quebec). Three configurations of cover with capillary barrier effects (CCBEs) with different thicknesses and material types for the moisture retention layer (MRL) were studied. MRL with 80 cm till, 40 cm till, and 40 cm clayey silt were used for cell nos. 2, 3, and 5, respectively. The capillary barrier layer (CBL) and drainage and protection layer (DPL) of the CCBE consisted of 30 cm gravel. A reference cell without cover was also constructed to compare the geochemical performance of the CCBEs. Due to an unexpected flooding in the leachate exit area of the cells in spring 2008, the cell instrumentation for hydrogeotechnical monitoring was postponed to spring 2009. Changes with time in volumetric water content, suction, soil oxygen concentration, and temperature were measured at different depths. This paper presents and discusses preliminary results obtained from spring 2009 to autumn 2010. In all cases, the degree of saturation Sr is lower in the CBL than in the MRL, indicating the presence of capillary barrier effects at the interface of these layers. Cell nos. 2 and 5 showed hydrogeotechnical behavior typical of an effective CCBE, with Sr maintained above 85% in the MRL and lower than 30?50% in the DPL and CBL. Based on the obtained results, and as expected, MRL thickness and the type of construction material used appear to affect the hydrogeotechnical behavior of the CCBE. Oxygen concentration profiles through the CCBEs were used to estimate the oxygen flux, and results indicate that cell nos. 2 and 3 performed better than cell no. 3. CCBE performance is currently being investigated using the geochemical monitoring data.

L’industrie minière génère chaque année une quantité considérable de rejets miniers, principalement sous forme de stériles ou de résidus de l’usine de traitement. Les stériles sont des roches sans valeur économique, excavées pour atteindre la roche minéralisée. Ils sont usuellement empilés en surface formant des haldes à stériles. Les résidus miniers sont des roches finement broyées, mélangées avec de l’eau, résultant du traitement du minerai. Ils sont généralement pompés et entreposés en surface dans des parcs à résidus. Cependant, leur stockage peut être sujet à des instabilités géotechniques, mais également géochimiques, pouvant entrainer des problèmes environnementaux majeurs, tels que le drainage minier acide (DMA). Le DMA se produit lorsque des minéraux sulfureux, contenus dans ces deux types de rejets, s’oxydent au contact de l’eau et de l’oxygène [1]. Le DMA se caractérise par une solution acide (pH inférieur à 6) riche en métaux, contaminant les eaux souterraines et de surface et représentant alors un danger pour la faune, la flore et la santé humaine [2]. La remise en état et la fermeture des sites miniers doivent donc être pensées dès la phase d’étude du projet d’exploitation, afin de proposer une méthode de gestion des rejets qui permettra de limiter les impacts environnementaux pendant et après l'exploitation.

"Oil sands tailings impoundments rank among the largest (spatially) in the world, covering a total of approximately 220 km2 of northern Alberta, Canada. A preliminary geomorphic design for an oil sands tailings storage facility (TSF) landform was completed with the goal of eventual closure and delicensing in mind. This paper outlines methods identified during the design process that streamline closure when implemented early in the mine planning and TSF design stages. With most oil sands TSFs currently in active operation (and some still in the planning stages), geotechnical engineers and mine planners have the opportunity to make operational and design decisions, such as those outlined herein, that are likely to improve the geotechnical and environmental performance of the landform post closure. ¦ KEYWORDS Alberta, Athabasca oil sands (AOS), Landform design, Reclamation, Sand dam, Tailings storage facility (TSF) RÉSUMÉ Les bassins d’accumulation des résidus issus des sables bitumineux font partie des plus grands (en termes d’espace) au monde, et couvrent au total environ 220 km2 dans le nord de l’Alberta, au Canada. Une conception géomorphologique préliminaire a été réalisée pour le modelé d’une installa¬tion de stockage des résidus (ISR) issus des sables bitumineux en gardant à l’esprit la fermeture et le retrait de permis à terme. Cet article présente les méthodes identifiées pendant le processus de conception qui simplifient la fermeture lorsqu’elles sont mises en oeuvre dès les premières étapes de planification de la mine et de conception de l’ISR. Oil sands located within 100 m of the original surface account for 4,800 km2 of the total area and are considered to be economically mineable (Figure 1; ERCB, 2009). Bitumen, the thick, tar-like substance contained in the AOS, is extracted through open-pit mining and in-situ methods. During mining, the overburden is first removed as waste and the sandy, bitumi¬nous ore (“oil sand”) is transported to processing facilities via conveyor belts and 400 t trucks. Warm and hot water, as well as process aides such as caustic soda, are mixed with the oil sand, creating a slurry from which bitumen is mobilized and extracted. The resulting slurry waste product is called “tailings” and contains mineral solids, process water, and small proportions of unrecovered bitumen (Masliyah, Zhou, Xu, Czarnecki, & Hamza, 2004; Sobkowicz & Morgenstern, 2009)."

"The application of pneumatically-assisted fluidized bed flotation, specifically the ERIEZ HydroFloatTM technology, has found widespread use in non-sulphide processing (particularly phosphate, potash and coal) for the recovery of coarse particles. In gold processing, centrifugal gravity circuits and flash flotation cells are typically employed for the recovery of coarse and near-size liberated gold which tends to accumulate in recycled grinding streams due to bypass to the classifying cyclone underflow streams owing to the higher specific gravity of these gold particles. Early removal of this gold from the grinding circuits contributes toward the reduction of downstream processing losses as a result of overgrinding and particle shape deformation in the case of flotation processing, longer leach residence times in the case of extractive processing, and surface occlusions in the case of both flotation and extractive processing. Furthermore, recovery to bullion attracts higher payment terms by way of comparison to concentrate sales in the case of copper-gold concentrators. This paper assesses the application of pneumatically assisted fluidized bed flotation for the recovery of coarse liberated gold through the analysis of piloting data generated from the operation of a continuously operated 16 inch ERIEZ HydroFloatTM unit treating a sized coarse grinding circuit stream. The paper presents the stage recovery by size performance of the ERIEZ HydroFloatTM unit together with quantitative gold deportment analysis to demonstrate the efficiency with which gold was recovered during this pilot campaign and then compared to more conventional processing units – centrifugal gravity and conventional flotation.INTRODUCTION Newcrest Mining Limited (NML) has identified that an opportunity exists for improving the recovery of coarse composite particles at its current operations, both as a means for improving overall recovery and as an opportunity for early gangue rejection. As such, Newcrest Mining Limited has taken an interest in the application of pneumatically-assisted, fluidized-bed flotation i.e. ERIEZ HydroFloatTM technology. This interest dates back to 2011 with sighter testwork carried out on their Australian-held ore bodies (Kohmuench et al, 2013). Newcrest continues to assess ERIEZ HydroFloatTM potential for coarse composite recovery and, in the case of the topic of this paper, coarse gold recovery based on examples in the literature which demonstrate the efficiency of this technology in this regard (Carmona Franco et al., (2015); Miller et al., (2016); and Kohmuench et al, 2013)."

"As real estate for new development in urban settings becomes scarce, commercial high rises are being constructed above open passenger rail tracks and vehicular roadways. Rail and roadway overbuilds are treated as tunnels requiring emergency ventilation systems for train or automobile and truck fires. The value of floor space in residential and office towers poses challenges to engineers responsible for designing fan rooms and shafts for tunnel ventilation systems within the towers. This paper describes a case study of the unique incorporation of tunnel ventilation fan plants in the overbuild structure of a passenger railyard and an adjacent roadway.INTRODUCTIONTunnel ventilation systems are required for passenger rail and transit (subway) tunnels by the NFPA 130 Standard for Fixed Guideway Transit and Passenger Rail Systems, and the NFPA 502 Standard for Road Tunnels, Bridges, and Other Limited Access Highways requires tunnel ventilation systems for vehicular (road) tunnels. Passenger rail and transit (subway) tunnels are typically ventilated with a series of shafts placed longitudinally along the tunnels to provide piston relief for normal train operations and emergency ventilation of train fires utilizing reversible axial flow fans. The shafts are incorporated in dedicated ventilation buildings that house the tunnel ventilation fans and starters, switchgear to power the fans and other equipment and systems in the building, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) to control fan operation with Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) software, and HVAC fans and ductwork to ventilate the spaces in the building. These ventilation buildings may also provide access to the tunnels below with ingress/egress stairs for use by first responders and firefighters entering the tunnels and train or transit system passengers exiting the tunnels in an emergency. The EKATI"" Diamond Mine commenced operation in October 1998. It is operated by BHP Diamonds Inc., which is a part of the Non-Ferrous and Industrial Materials Division of BHP Minerals, a business unit of BHP Company Ltd. of Melbourne, Australia. The EKATI"" Diamond Mine is a joint venture of BHP Diamonds Inc. (51%), Dia Met Minerals Ltd. (29%), Charles E. Fipke (10%) and Dr. Stewart L. Blusson (10%). In December 1993, an office was opened in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories specifically for the then Northwest Territories Diamonds Project (EKATI"" Diamond Mine) development. EKATI"" Diamond Mine is located 300 kilometres northeast of Yellowknife and 200 kilometres south of the Arctic Circle in the Northwest Territories of Canada (Figure 1 ). The site is located in a remote tundra area of continuous permafrost, north of the tree line, which is part of the Canadian Shield. Wekweti (Snare Lake), a Dogrib community approximately 180 kilometres southwest of the project, is the closest neighbour. The mining area and facilities lie within the 10 960 hectares land leases held by the joint venture. The total claim block (core zone and buffer zone joint ventures) covers 344 000 hectares. To date, more than one hundred kimberlite pipes have been identified within the claims. Five of these provide the basis for the present mine plan. Total capital investment in the project is over C$700 million. At full production employment will be about 600, including employees and long-term contractors, with over 33% being Aboriginal from the Northwest Territories.

The Stillwater Mining Company operates an integrated mines, mill, smelter and base metals refinery complex in Montana, USA for the production of a high-grade platinum group metals (PGM) bearing concentrate, nickel sulphate crystal and cathode copper from the PGM-containing nickel-copper converter matte. The complex was constructed in stages over several years, starting with the mine and the mill, followed by the smelter and finally, a base metals refinery, which was commissioned in 1996. Due to the relatively small quantity of matte production, a straightforward refinery process was initially selected to extract the base metals, which reported to a mixed nickel-copper solution for further treatment off-site, and yielded a high-grade PGM concentrate suitable for treatment in a PGM refinery elsewhere. Subsequently, as a result of increased matte production, the process was modified to separate the nickel and copper, and to produce a nickel sulphate salt and cathode copper. This paper describes the design and operation of the original and the modified processes utilized in the base metals refinery (BMR).
