Over recent years there has been a significant increase in the number of miners in the Pilbara region of Western Australia targeting channel iron deposits (CID) located in valleys, intersected by ephemeral creeks and below the groundwater table. The falling iron ore price has triggered a drive to reduce cost and maximise yield. Creek diversions provide an opportunity to maximise the utilisation of orebodies and extend the life-of-mine.Creek diversions that are required during mining operations to access ore and provide flood protection have historically been constructed as uniform engineered channels designed primarily for flow conveyance while minimising earthworks costs; however, the design of diversions becomes more complex when they are required to function in a similar way to the existing creek system during operations and remain stable during more extreme events than would typically occur following mine closure, in accordance with current regulatory guidance. The design specifications for closure are often more rigorous than the operational phase, and could incur significant additional cost to implement retrospectively if not planned and designed upfront.The complexity of diversion design depends on site specific factors such as: the size of the creek to be diverted; hydrology; corridor restrictions; geomorphology; hydrogeology; geology; environmental and heritage values; potential impacts and the risk to operations and environment. The complex interactions of these factors must be well understood and hydraulic modelling undertaken to characterise the existing creek system, demonstrate the diversions, provide adequate flood protection during operations, and can function in a similar way to the existing system following mine closure. Coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP) has re-emerged as a major concern in the Australian coal mining industry. Harmful effects from coal dust inhalation have been well documented, but the underlying causes and mechanisms of CWP are still debatable. Research conducted in the USA has proposed a plausible link between the presence of pyrite in coal and the prevalence of CWP. Reactive pyrite in coal oxidises under ambient mine conditions to produce various iron sulfate minerals such as melanterite, rozenite, roemerite and szomolnokite. Rapid reaction rates are promoted by the form (size and morphology) of the reactive pyrite present, which provides both increased surface area and increased porosity for easy air access to reaction sites. The products formed from reactive pyrite oxidation are often needle-like crystals with thicknesses in the order of 1–2 µm (eg melanterite and rozenite) and prismatic crystals with thicknesses less than 5 µm (eg roemerite) have been recorded. The densities of these minerals are significantly less than quartz, which makes them prone to becoming airborne with the normal coal dust. In fact, the mix of these mineral salts is commonly referred to as ‘fairy dust’ by mine workers due to the way they can become entrained and sparkle in the mine ventilation air, particularly if they occur in the upper part of a seam that is forming a coal roof. Examples are presented of the various products of reactive pyrite oxidation found in three Australian coal samples, which provide evidence of the physical and chemical mechanisms that would support the USA findings, particularly in terms of a source of bioavailable iron leading to increased inflammatory stress response.CITATION:Beamish, B B, Ward, C R and Chalmers, D, 2017. A new lead refinery with a capacity of 230,000 tons per year commenced operation at Port Pirie in October, 1959. This plant superseded the refinery which had operated from 1933 with the advent of the continuous lead refining process. The incorporation of new equipment following local metallurgical developments, together with the overseas demand for lead of extremely low antimony content createddifficulties in operating the original plant. The new refinery project was undertaken to cover this disability and to gain the full advantage of the new processes.Desilverising and softening are carried out in units identical in size to those used previously. Metallic zinc is recovered from the entire output of desilverised bullion by vacuum distillation. Final refining is carried out by batch treatment with caustic soda yielding lead of purity previously unattainable at Port Pirie.These two processes replace continuous dezincing by oxidation, a high temperature process which caused large quantities of lead and antimony to be recirculated. The final stage is a batch process; therefore the product composition can be checked before casting. Individual batches can be adjusted to produce special alloys to consumer's specification.Improved casting equipment allows the quantity production of pigs of good physical characteristics either as 56 lb bars or 2000 lb pigs.This, together with the high purity of the lead, assures the Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty. Ltd. (RH.A.S.) position in world markets.Automatic control systems are extensively employed, particularly on the vacuum dezincing unit.The anticipated financial benefits have been achieved mainly by a reduction in the tonnage of recirculated materials, a smaller labour force, and reduced maintenance requirements.INTRODUCTIONIn December 1956 a decision was made to build at Port Pirie a lead refinery on a completely new site, and in October 1959 the new refinery was brought into operation. Energy comes at great cost to our world and societies and therefore we should use it wisely and optimally. Societal pressure is enforcing this and the industry must respond by being proactive.The mine-to-mill approach to integrated mine and semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill optimisation demonstrated that throughput gains of up to 20 per cent could be obtained through a closer match of blasted run-of-mine ore to the feed best treated by a SAG mill. Since that approach was developed, new drivers have risen to prominence including environmental costs and impact of energy, water, waste. This is set against a backdrop of reducing ore grade and increasing demand that is pushing up our impact on the environment. The new challenges demand new approaches.This paper explores the opportunities in taking traditional approaches to optimisation to new levels of two-way integration and incorporating potentials for ore upgrade into circuit design. The new mantra may be æflexible circuitsÆ û designing and building for the present and the future by allowing for the uptake of new and future technology.

Gold Fields Australia is constructing two major ventilation shafts at the Wallaby gold mine in Western Australia. The new ventilation shafts are required to facilitate the long term ventilation strategy for the mine, thereby allowing continued extraction of ore beyond 1000 m below the surface. The construction work has involved all of the challenges that shaft construction can throw up, including challenging geotechnical conditions, unexpected high water inflows and major circulation loss during pilot hole drilling for raise boring. An extensive geotechnical and hydrological investigation program was undertaken prior to awarding the shaft construction contracts. While most of the risks were identified, several proved to be much more challenging than expected. The shaft construction methods included conventional sinking into the fresh rock profile in each shaft, followed by raise bore pilot hole drilling and reaming. A headframe was constructed for the first shaft, which was sunk to 92 m with a stage suspended in the shaft to facilitate the concrete lining and provide rope guides for the kibble winding. Drawing from experience when sinking the first shaft, additional ground pre-conditioning was implemented for the second shaft, which was pre-supported with continuous piles to 28 m followed by sinking to 50 m using a crane instead of winders and a headframe. Following the conventional sinking through the weathered zone in each shaft, the shafts were completed using a raise bore. The first shaft utilised a riser pipe and rotary vertical drilling system (RVDS) with the second shaft having utilised a dual rotary rig for pilot hole drilling. The epithermal Au-Ag deposits of the Hauraki Goldfield have formed in the convergent plate margin setting of the Coromandel Volcanic Zone (CVZ). The deposits form as siliceous lodes in the upper parts of geothermal systems associated with andesitic and rhyolitic volcanism. Two types of low sulphidation epithermal mineralisation are recognised in these volcanic terranes. Vein deposits within the rhyolitic terrane in the east and south of the CVZ (Whitianga Province) are typified by Chalcedonic Silica-Adularia-Illite type mineralisation. The veins are hosted by both rhyolite-dacite volcanic rocks and the underlying andesitic basement. The mineralisation formed by episodic violent decompressional boiling of deeply circulating meteoric water, with some magmatic fluid contribution; this boiling was associated with hydraulic fracturing and hydrothermal eruptions in geothermal systems where the piezometric surface of the deep geothermal reservoir lay near-surface. Such episodic boiling provides chalcedonic veining, banding and brecciation textures, adularia stability, bladed calcite, and extreme loss of H2S gas from the fluid to cause major gold deposition.   Crystalline Quartz-Illite-(Adularia-Kaolinite) type mineralisation is widespread in the andesitic terrane forming the northern and western portions of the CVZ (Kuaotunu Province). There is a spatial association with weak mineralisation of the high sulphidation (Vuggy Silica-Alunite-Kaolinite-Illite) epithermal type and porphyry eu-Au type. Crystalline Quartz mineralisation is probably formed by the mixing of shallow acidic groundwaters with the ascending deep geothermal fluid in geothermal systems beneath andesitic stratovolcanoes. The piezometric surface to the deep geothermal reservoir in these systems is likely to lie at considerable depth, with acidic gases rising from the geothermal reservoir condensing within the overlying vadose zone. The cooling effect, oxidation and pH decrease accompanying mixing apparently overcomes the dilution effect, and results in quartz deposition, illite (and locally kaolinite) alteration, and precipitation of gold. A high level of base-metal sulphide precipitation also enhances gold deposition. Violent boiling of the mixing fluids may occur at local structural dilation sites, producing high grade "bonanza" gold mineralisation.

Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB (LKAB) operates one iron ore mine, three concentration plants and three pelletising plants in Kiruna, Sweden. The current methods of separation at the beneficiation plants are low intensity magnetic separation (LIMS) and reverse apatite flotation, where the wet LIMS stage is regarded as the crucial part of silica separation from the ore. Because future silica levels are expected to increase in the incoming material to the beneficiation plants, geometallurgy has become an important area of development and research.A laboratory-scale methodology was developed for the systematic characterisation of the ore for mineral processing, with the focus on the high silica ore type B2 and newly discovered subtypes. This methodology combines mineralogical, geochemical and process mineralogical characteristics. Automated mineralogy (QEMSCAN®) is used to study the modal mineralogy, the distribution of silicate minerals in different particle size classes after comminution, the deportment of silicon (Si) between various silicates and the degree of liberation and intergrowth of magnetite and silicates. An essential stage in the systematic characterisation of the ore deposit for mineral processing is the estimation and simulation of different parameters from the laboratory scale to the full scale at the concentration plants. This is achieved by using empirical models based on the data collected at the mineral processing plants. As the first step to implement the geometallurgical information, the current geological model is reconstructed with the mineralogy and the two, newly defined subtypes of high silica ore type B2 are separated into different domains.To study the reduction of the SiO2 content in the magnetite concentrate, a large-scale reverse cationic silicate flotation laboratory test program was initiated in early spring 2016. This program investigated potential silicate flotation in the beneficiation plants at the Kiirunavaara site. The second target is to implant mineral processing parameters into the block model based on the new geological model. "The SUSOP« Framework is a new technique that helps incorporate sustainable development principles and objectives into the design and operation of businesses. Developed through the Co-operative Research Centre for Sustainable Resource Processing, it brings a design methodology to sustainability, similar to what hazard and risk techniques such as HAZOP did for safety.Metallica Minerals Limited (æMetallicaÆ) adopted the SUSOP« framework to help identify opportunities and risks that could directly improve or affect its flagship SCONI (nickel-cobalt and scandium) project. This project has the potential to become the worldÆs largest producer of scandium oxide (æscandiaÆ) which is used in solid oxide fuel cells and strengthens aluminium alloys. Located northwest of Townsville in Queensland, the plant site will be located within the previously mined and partially rehabilitated Greenvale Nickel Mine. By applying the SUSOP« framework through a series of multi-disciplinary workshops and offline analysis, Metallica was able to identify numerous sustainability opportunities and risks. Opportunities were clustered together to form concepts to develop a more holistic understanding of the projectÆs overall potential contribution to sustainable development as well as determine where key risks could be mitigated. Four key concepts were identified: Waste and Water Workforce Community and Enterprise Development Energy and Greenhouse Gases (GHG). Metallica was able to include a range of initiatives that could deliver enhanced environmental, social and community outcomes into their mine development plan. These included measures to reduce reliance on water, reduce the volume of waste, provide local opportunities for training and skilled employment and create support for local enterprise development. In the last 30 years, human appropriation of global renewable resources has accelerated to the point where 35 per cent of the earthÆs land surface is now in managed agro-ecosystems, consumptive water use consumes between 50 per cent and 85 per cent of freshwater supply and 60 per cent of ecosystem services are utilised in an unsustainable manner. There are virtually no landscapes in which renewable resources are not already fully allocated among different economic and environmental uses. Furthermore, it is increasingly recognised that water availability issues do not exist in isolation but are linked with the related environmental issues of biodiversity preservation, the carbon cycle, soil degradation, and energy use and supply. It is against this background that the sustainable management of water in mining is increasingly developing a strategic viewpoint where water is viewed as a resource within an interconnected landscape, having economic, environmental and social value and providing a range of environmental services in the provision of public and private goods. This paper explores the issues associated with sustainable management of water in mining from a strategic viewpoint. The cumulative impacts of multiple water users, both within and outside the mining sector, is increasingly threatening the security of supply for all users. To quantitatively assess the ætrueÆ value of water it is necessary to: Better understand the science of ecosystem functioning and how human actions impact on environmental processes. Develop appropriate policy, finance and governance structures to support innovative programs that preserve ecosystem function and services (including market based instruments). Apply knowledge as interventions across landscapes in ways that maximise benefits and minimise unintended consequences taking into account differences in the value of water among sectors. A strategic viewpoint of water management relies on knowledge to guide decision making that has been acquired at a range of scales from mine site to mining region. This knowledge must be based on rigorous science, sound data and syntheses of different types of information. Strategic management of water resources will better position the industry in terms of understanding the risks posed by complex, interlinked environmental issues that are increasingly impacting on future access to land and renewable resources, including water, thereby ensuring miningÆs future social licence to operate.

The mining residues at the abandoned copper mine site Pe±a de Hierro, located at the headwaters of the Rio Tinto, contribute substantially to the pollution of the river with high loads of Fe, As, Pb, Zn and Cu. The pH of the outflow ranges from 0.5 to 2.4 in the dry and wet season, respectively. One heap composed of alternating layers, which were deposited parallel to the slope, was investigated in detail. Unsorted blocky to fine materials including gossan material, pyritic volcanics, ashes from pyrite combustion and slate were observed here. The top of the heap has a gentle slope and a hill contouring channel-rip morphology. The initially rugged surface was smoothed by heavy rainfalls filling up the pores of the blocky material with fines. These fines are capable of storing the water for a prolonged time, providing an extended reaction time close to surface in a dry climate at extremely low pH conditions (one to four). All minerals, pyrite, mica, barite and even quartz (probably due to F released from dissolved mica) have been digested and silica gel precipitates have formed a stable and quasi impermeable 100 ¦m layer with very low porosity (<5 area per cent, estimated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imaging). The silica layer itself is covered by Fe-oxy-hydroxide (ie FeOOH) coating (10 ¦m) and seals a 1 - 5 mm thick stable hardpan. This hardpan covers the channels and part of the rips almost entirely, guiding the rainwater subhorizontally towards slopes and sinkholes. By geoelectrical measurements, a 3D-resistivity model of the internal structures and the bedrock relief underlying the heap was generated. Internal structures relate to lithological changes in a number of layers. Zones of low resistivity may be attributed to washed-in fines within the mega pore system, whilst zones of high resistivity close to the surface probably reflect the advanced stage of drying beneath aging hardpans. The water movement at the surface was investigated by an artificial precipitation experiment with monitoring of the subsequent changes in resistivities.

Copper waste dump leaching is growing in importance because of the.large tonnages (up to 250,000 ton/day) of low grade waste rock available from open cut mining of copper deposits and proof that controlled leaching of copper from such dumps can be profitable.Overburden or waste rock, ranging in size from large boulders to fines, is dumped as cheaply as possible on sloping sites. Copper is leached from the dumps by applying up to 12,000 gal/min of leach solution (a combination of spent solution from cementation and make-up water) to the top of the dumps by various techniques.Efliuent from the dumps is sent to a cementation plant for copper recovery.Factors which may be controlled, either directly or indirectly, to give a controlled copper content in the dump efliuent (usually 1-2 g/l.) are the cycle of operations (i.e. the alternate wetting and drying periods), thevolume of solution applied to the dump, pH, Fe2+ and Fe3+ content or redox potential, oxygen content, bacteria and their necessary nutrients, and temperature.Dissolution of oxide copper minerals appears to be mainly a function of acid concentration. Copper sulphide minerals need oxidation for dissolution to occur and this is accomplished by a combination of oxygen,ferric ion, and bacteria. Oxidation of pyrite, oxidation of Fe2+ to Fe3 +, and hydrolysis of Fe3+ are of some importance in leaching practice. The presence of gangue carbonate minerals is detrimental.Physical factors connected with penetration of solution into large rocks are important and the treatment of an individual dump usually extends over a period of many years. Recovery of copper from solution is usually achieved by cementation with iron (usually in the form of crumpled cans) but the use of sponge iron is becoming more important. Iron consumption varies from 1 to 4 lbiron per pound of copper. Preconcentration of the copper in the efliuent solution by solvent extraction followed by electrolysis may become a useful method.Application of dump leaching techniques to metals other than copper depends on finding an economic method of recovering the metal from solution...

Development of New Comminution Testing Methodologies for Geometallurgical Mapping of Ore Hardness and Throughput The emerging discipline of 'geometallurgy' is becoming increasingly recognised as a discrete and high-value activity that reflects an ongoing trend towards more effective mine site integration and optimisation. Constrained sampling that reflects and defines inherent ore body variability is a key geometallurgical requirement. This requires use of larger numbers of low-cost physical testing which can be applied to small sample volumes suitable for defining natural variability. The AMIRA P843 'GeMIII' project (Geometallurgical Mapping and Mine Modelling) is a major industry-supported research initiative designed to develop new tools, methods and protocols to support geometallurgical integration. As part of this integrated research a new more rapid low-cost comminution test (GeM Comminution index) has been developed which can be employed as a front line tool for geometallurgical mapping purposes and predictive throughput modelling. The test has been designed to be inserted into routine assay sample preparation and is based on constrained jaw crushing protocols linked to analysis of resultant size distributions. Extensive validation and modelling has shown the GeM Comminution Index (Ci) is correlated with the Drop Weight index A*b and Bond Mill Work Index (BMWi). Large scale trials have been conducted within a commercial assay laboratory to demonstrate and optimise incorporation of the Ci test into routine sample preparation protocols. While Ci based estimates of A*b and BMWi are not as precise compared to larger volume more expensive test-work, the ability to undertake large numbers of tests typically in a systematic down-hole manner, provides a high level of data support through adjacency. A Ci based approach is highly suitable for variability mapping, domaining and selecting large composite samples for more precise testing. Within the context of the AMIRA P843 project this forms part of an integrated work flow designed to support geometallurgical integration. The development of a comminution test linked to routine assay sample preparation represents significant value adding to a process that in most cases is already going to be carried out. The minerals industry is facing a productivity and investment crisis. The ‘Millennium Super Cycle’ from 2003–2011 was an unprecedented period of growth and investment resulting in increased throughput and development of lower grade resources to meet demand. During the boom quantity became more important than quality with throughput the key metric. This was accompanied by a general trend of decreasing feed grades across all commodities that was offset with higher production volumes.Current industry perception is that feed grade depletion is an unavoidable consequence of ore deposit geology and mass mining technologies for increasingly mature mining operations. In typical crush-grind-float operations value recovery only takes place at ~1–200 micron particle size during flotation, ie 3–4 orders of magnitude size reduction compared to primary feed. For increasingly low-grade deposits the cost of energy and capital intensity required to process and reject low value material at micron scale drives poor productivity. An alternative is to deploy a range of coarse (~10–100 mm) separation and rejection technologies. Grade Engineering® is an integrated approach to coarse rejection that matches a suite of separation technologies to ore specific characteristics and compares the net value of rejecting low value components in current feed streams to existing mine plans.Coarse rejection can be used on size distributions ranging from run-of-mine (ROM) to semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) discharge. Grade Engineering® is based on five rock based ‘levers’ linked to combinations of screening, sensor-based sorting and heavy media separation. These involve exploitation of preferential grade deportment to specific size fractions during breakage: differential blasting to condition grade by size at bench scale; sensor based sorting at truck and conveyor scale; and differential particle density.Grade Engineering® is being developed and implemented by a consortium of over 30 mining companies, equipment suppliers and research organisations. The structure of a comprehensive research project into mine fires study applying the Ventgraph mine fire simulation software, preplanning of escape scenarios and general interaction with rescue responses is outlined. The project has Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) funding and also relies on substantial mining company site support. This practical input from mine operators is essential and allows the approach to be introduced in the most creditable way. The effort is built around the introduction of fire simulation computer software to the Australian mining industry and the consequent modelling of fire scenarios in selected different mine layouts. Application of the simulation software package to the changing mine layouts requires experience to achieve realistic outcomes. Most Australian mines of size currently use a ventilation network simulation program. Under the project a small subroutine has been written to transfer the input data from the existing mine ventilation network simulation program to æVentgraphÆ. This has been tested successfully. To understand fire simulation behaviour on the mine ventilation system, it is necessary to understood the possible effects of mine fires on various mine ventilation systems correctly first. Case studies demonstrating the possible effects of fires on some typical Australian coal mine ventilation circuits have been examined. The situation in which there is some gas make at the face and effects with fire have also been developed to emphasise how unstable and dangerous situations may arise. The primary objective of the part of the study described in this paper is to use mine fire simulation software to gain better understanding of how spontaneous combustion initiated fires can interact with the complex ventilation behaviour underground during a substantial fire. It focuses on the simulation of spontaneous combustion sourced heatings that develop into open fires. Further, it examines ventilation behaviour effects of spontaneous combustion initiated pillar fires and examines the difficulties these can be present if a ventilation reversal occurs. It also briefly examines simulation of use of the inertisation to assist in mine recovery. Mine fires are recognised across the world as a major hazard issue. New approaches allowing improvement in understanding their consequences have been developed as an aid in handling this complex area.

Water rights and availability are extremely contentious issues in many mining regions around the world, in some instances leading to violent confrontation. This situation has the potential to only get worse because competition for 'scarce' water resources will increase with population growth. In this environment the dilemma facing the mining industry is how to generate confidence in developing a responsible, sustainable and transparent water management strategy that is recognised as such by all stakeholders. Whilst the water needs of the mining industry are minor compared to those of agriculture, an operating mine requires a relatively large quantity of water on a daily basis to carry out operations. Another contentious aspects of new mine development is the debate between all stakeholders on the amount and quality of water that a mine is able to discharge into the environment should this be required. There are a multitude of water resources available to the mining industry for operational needs however much of this water is saline and over the last two decades there has been a continual decline in water quality (ie salinity has increased). In today's world there are enormous internal and external pressures to reduce water consumption at a mine and/or alternatively use water not considered a resource by the local community (ie sewage, saline or salt water, desalinated water). Strategies to meet these objectives can be achieved by implementing good water management practices, by recycling process water, reducing water losses by evaporation and seepage (ie by increasing and improving dewatering practices) and employing new technologies such as dry stacking and dry processing. Recycled water, acid mine drainage water and water collected in the mining area have the potential to impact mineral processing performance, unless they are treated, because of the build up of mineral salts and decomposed chemical products in these types of waters. Besides this the regulatory requirements of any water discharged from a mine site (quantity and quality) have also become more stringent. For these reasons there is now some form of water treatment practiced at most mining operations around the world. This paper provides an overview of water stewardship undertaken in the mining industry over the last two decades and provides examples of water treatment practices that have recently been installed at mining operations that may be of interest to the reader.

Paradoxically, the increased emphasis on water treatment in mining has generated a new problem û hypersaline brines. Currently brines are either disposed of into ash systems, lined evaporation ponds or hazardous waste sites. Evaporative crystallisation (EC) is an alternative, but the energy requirements can be prohibitive and the salt product is still a waste that must be disposed of. Eutectic freeze crystallisation (EFC) is an alternative technology that is capable of separating aqueous solutions into pure water (as ice) and pure, solidified solutes. It is highly energy efficient and does not depend on the introduction of any solvents. In addition, the simultaneous production of pure ice and potentially saleable pure salt(s) is a major advantage. Although EFC has been shown to be effective in separating a single salt and water, it is still in the early stages of being applied to the multi-component hypersaline brines that are typical of reverse osmosis retentates generated by mining and extractive metallurgy.This paper presents an EFC brine treatment protocol developed by the Crystallisation and Precipitation Unit at the University of Cape Town. The protocol incorporates brine analysis, thermodynamic modelling to establish which salts will freeze out and at which temperatures, followed by experimental studies to determine the kinetic parameters, such as nucleation temperatures, salt yields and crystal purity.Case studies showing the application of EFC for the purification of typical brines containing high levels of sodium, chlorine, sulfate and ammonia (Brine 1) and a mixture of sodium and magnesium sulfate (Brine 2) are covered. Modelling tools were applied to describe the phase behaviour of the multi-component saline systems under different process conditions. Experimental validation was carried out using synthetic brines of different (and increasingly complex) compositions. The results showed that EFC could be used to selectively recover the sodium as a sodium sulfate salt from both different brines. The simulation tools were useful in the analysis and understanding of the process.A preliminary economic analysis showed that the operating costs for EC were approximately nine times those for EFC, but the capital costs were much less- equipment for EC cost about half that of EFC. However, it is important to note that the capital cost calculations for EC are based on a technology that is already well established and with only relatively marginal future equipment cost savings expected. In contrast, EFC is a new technology, with significant future technology improvements expected.

During the drilling campaign conducted between October, 1942; and May, 1943, to prove the extent of the scheelite deposit worked by King Island Scheelite N.L. at Grassy, King Island, Tasmania, 35 holes were drilled and 606 samples recovered and assayed for their content. Of these, 238 came from outside the limits of the orebody and were for the most part barren, although a few contained some scheelite. The present statistical analysis is made only of the 368 samples taken from diamond-drill cores of the orebody itself.Drilling Pattern and Sampling MethodsFrom the purely statistical viewpoint, it is realised that methods employed in selecting sites for diamong.-drilling, and of collecting samples from drill cores, do not give a completely unbiassed set of data for analysis. Fig. 1 is a sketch plan showing the relativepositions of the drillholes, which were inclined at an angle of depression of 50 deg. The pattern does not conform to a properly randomized and' regularly-spaced grid, the positions of the later holes being determined by the results obtained from previous holes.Statistically, the bias is, therefore, favourable. The unequal spacing of the drill holes and the lack of uniformity in direction of the lines along which the holes were drilled are unsatisfactory from the mathematical viewpoint; but it is realised that these irregularitiesare difficult to avoid in determining by the most economical methods the extent of such an orebody, and are dictated by geological rather than mathematical necessity.Sampling, also, is lacking in complete uniformity. Each sample is approximately 10ft. in length. However, owing to the fact that 100% recovery of core is rarely achieved, and actual lengths of samples taken are ,primarily governed by the length of the drill runs,and secondarily by lithological changes, there is a considerable amount of variation in the sample length.AssayingWith the exception of 28 samples from three drill holes all samples dealt with in this paper were assayed in the Melbourne University Ore-Dressing Laboratory of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation. These assays were given to the nearest 0.05% WOg as it was considered that more accurate determination was not possible. This fact has been taken into consideration in the frequency analysis below. The 28 assays determined by the Tasmanian Mines Department were given to the nearest 0.01%.

New Zealand Steel's Taharoa titano-magnetite mine, south of Auckland, set two national load records when it transported around 2000 t of mining equipment three kilometres overland on time, under budget and without safety incident. It was the first time in New Zealand that four platform trailers were assembled end-to-end to transport a load. It was also the first time that a single load of 1000 t was transported on platform trailers. The need for the relocation of all equipment was realized five years ago. It took two years of planning and specialist advice to relocate the mine's 250 t dredge, 500 t surge bin, 1000 t concentrator plant and ancillary equipment from the Southern Mining Region across a specially designed haul road to the Central Mining Region. The project was carried out during a six-week shutdown in early 2001. Two dry docks were constructed, one at each end of the relocation route. The equipment was floated into a dismantling pond that was interconnected with the dry dock in the Southern Region. Through pumping, the water levels were controlled to allow transfer of the separated units from the dismantling pond into the dry dock. Once drained, sets of self-elevating platform trailers were used to transport the main units, one at a time, between the dry docks. Five prime movers were used to pull the loads. At the receiving end, the units were off-loaded in a dry dock interlinked with ,the first mining pond. The equipment was relocated because the reserves in the Southern Mining Region were mined out. A natural watercourse û the Wainui Stream û defines the northern boundary of the Southern Region and the objective became to relocate the mining plant to the other side of the stream and re-establish in the Central Region. The project team selected the trailers as the most effective means of transporting the equipment, particularly given the non-invasive means of crossing the Wainui Stream. Negotiations with prime contractor Tranzcarr Heavy Haulage Ltd commenced in mid-2000. The remainder of 2000 was spent in developing concepts with the contractor, detailed designing, preparing the dry docks, haul road and initial mine plan for the Central Region. These activities occurred with no conflict to the normal site production.

Arrium (previously OneSteel) initiated a desktop study into the performance of its hematite ore beneficiation plant in early 2010. The beneficiation plant utilises jig concentrators and spirals to upgrade low-grade hematite recovered during mining at the Iron Duke (ID) mine site located 60 km south-west of Whyalla. The study, conducted in conjunction with Mineral Technologies, identified a number of opportunities for improvement, which were validated by a series of sampling campaigns and a pilot plant trial. One of the major recommendations was to upgrade the ultra-fines processing circuit from a single-stage spiral circuit to a three-stage circuit. The upgrade of the ultra-fines circuit was estimated to provide a significant increase in fines production and grade.In order to capitalise on the strong iron price at the time of the project, Arrium decided to utilise a fast-tracked approach to design, construct and commission the processing equipment required to achieve the improvements identified. This decision introduced the risk of missing critical steps in the project development process, which could have potentially resulted in major issues in latter stages of the project. In addition to the challenges introduced due to the expedited time line for project completion, this project presented unique challenges due to its brownfield nature. One such challenge faced was the integration of the new equipment and control system software.Furthermore, the importance of the ID ore beneficiation plant (OBP) contribution to the companyÆs export commitments meant the upgrade work had to occur while minimising disruption to normal operation. This decision presented a set of new challenges to an already complex project. One such challenge was the need to build and commission the new spiral circuit in isolation from the operating plant.The aim of this paper will be to highlight some of the challenges faced in a complex brownfield project such as the ID OBP upgrade and discuss how they were managed to enable the successful commissioning of the process in early 2012.CITATION:Selvapandian E and Barr, R, 2013. Mill operators are entrusted to manage what are normally the largest capital assets on any mine site. Achieving maximum utilisation and lowest costs that drive operating margins are realised by applying well known fundamentals of good housekeeping and proactive (as opposed to reactive) maintenance programmes. Historically, maintenance and operations staff are bought in late during the construction stage and often do not have the time, know how or tools to put in place (let alone train the incumbent staff) a functioning maintenance system before commissioning starts. They then get drawn into a reactive maintenance paradigm as teething problems post commissioning are dealt with and day to day issues envelop the line tradesmen and supervisors. Additionally, even when some semblance of a planned maintenance system is established, it is often the case that over time personnel and cultural issues mask the development of problematic maintenance practices. As has been observed by the authors on many occasions, even when some basic programmed maintenance system is in place, the collection of maintenance data is often inaccurate, incomplete and not subject to analysis. The net result is of course a high incidence of machine failure leading to lower than expected availability, which ultimately translates to lower revenue and higher net maintenance costs. The time taken and the cost to repair a failed machine is always greater than the timely and planned repair of a worn machine.Upon review of a number of processing plants around the world, especially gold and small base metal operations, it is apparent that companies need to implement maintenance systems whereby the operators are not overwhelmed with data and can manage by exception. Inadequate or inaccurate data collection and analysis result in poor decisions being made and misguided actions taken. GR Engineering Services (GRES) has developed a system to enable the custodians of mining plant assets to make more effective and effective use of maintenance data by being able to focus on the indicators of plant deterioration and to programme concurrent maintenance activities to maximise plant availability and utilisation.This paper outlines the structures that can be employed to address the challenges of implementing a proactive asset management system.
