Introduction Horizontal drilling in coal mines is a relatively new technology. The earliest recorded drilling in the United States was done in 1958 at the Humphrey mine of Consolidation Coal Co. for degasification of coal seams. Spindler and Poundstone experimented with vertical and horizontal holes for several years. They concluded in 1960 that horizontal drilling in advance of underground mining appeared to offer the most promising prospect (for degasification) but effective and extensive application would be dependent upon the ability to drill long holes, possibly 300 to 600 m, with reasonably precise directional control and within practical cost limits (Spindler and Poundstone, 1960). Mining Research Division of Conoco Inc., the parent company of Consolidation Coal Co., began a research program in the early 1970s to achieve the above objective. The technology needed to drill nearly 300 m in advance of working faces was developed by 1975 and experiments on advance degasification with such deep holes began in 1976. Preliminary results of this research have already been published (Thakur and Davis, 1977). To date nearly 4.5 km of horizontal holes have been drilled for advance degasification and earlier results were reconfirmed. In summary, these are: • The greatest impact of these boreholes was felt in the face area where methane concentrations were reduced to nearly 0.3% in course of two to three months from original values of nearly 0.95%. • The methane concentration in the section return reduced to 50% of its original value immediately after the boreholes were completed, indicating a capture ratio of 50%. • The total methane emission in the section (rib and face emission plus the borehole production) did not increase but rather gradually declined with time. • Initial production from 300 m deep boreholes in the Pittsburgh seam varied from 3 m3/min to 6 m3/min but then slowly declined as workings advanced inby of the drill site (well head) exposing a larger surface area parallel to the borehole. Encouraged by these results, it was decided to design a horizontal drilling system that would be mobile and compatible with other face equipment. A mobile horizontal drill can be divided into three subsystems: the drill rig, the drill bit guidance system, and borehole surveying instruments. The drill rig provides the thrust and torque necessary to drill 75- to 100-mm diam holes up to 600 m deep and contains the mud circulation and gas cuttings separation systems. The drill bit guidance system guides the bit up, down, left, or right as desired. Borehole surveying instruments measure the pitch, roll, and azimuth of the borehole assembly. Additionally, it also indicates the thickness of coal between the borehole and the roof or floor of the coal seam. Thus, it becomes a powerful tool for locating the presence of faults, clay veins, sand channels, and the thickness of coal seam in advance of mining. In recent years, many other potential uses of horizontal boreholes have come to light, such as in situ gasification, longwall blasting, improved auger mining, and oil and gas production from shallow deposits. The purpose of this paper is to describe the hardware and procedure for drilling deep horizontal holes. The Drilling Rig [Figures 1 and 2] show the two components of the mobile drilling rig: the drill unit and the auxiliary unit. The equipment (except for the chassis) was designed by Conoco Inc. and fabricated by J. H. Fletcher and Co. of Huntington, WV. The drill unit. It is mounted on a four-wheel drive chassis driven by two Staffa hydraulic motors with chains. The tires are 369 X 457 mm in size and provide a ground clearance of 305 mm. The prime mover is a 30-kw explosion-proof electric motor which is used only for tramming. Once the unit is Crammed to the drill site, electric power is disconnected and hydraulic power from the auxiliary unit is turned on. Four floor jacks are used to level the machine and raise the drill head to the desired level. Two 5-t telescopic hydraulic props, one on each side, anchor the drill unit to the roof. The drill unit houses the feed carriage, the drilling console, 300 m of 3-m-long NQ, drill rods, and the electric cable reel for instruments. The feed carriage is mounted more or less centrally, has a feed of 3.3 m, and can swing laterally by ± 17°. It can also sump forward by 1.2 m. The drill head has a "through" chuck such that drill pipes can be fed from the side or back end. General specifications of the feed carriage are: [ ] The auxiliary unit. The chassis for the auxiliary unit is identical to the drill unit but the prime movers are two 30-kW explosion proof electric motors. It is equipped with a methane detector- activated switch so that power will be cut off at a preset methane concentration in the air. No anchoring props are needed for this unit. The auxiliary unit houses the hydraulic power pack, the water (mud) circulating pump, control boxes for electric motors, a trailing cable spool, and a steel tank which serves for water storage and closed-loop separation of drill cuttings and gas.

Many differences can be imagined between gas-oil flow in which the gas is supplied at the face of the core and gas-oil flow in which the flowing gas was originally dissolved in the oil. If capillary pressure characteristics and flow requirements control gas saturation distribution, the gas would be expected to be located at preferred sites within the porous medium as determined by pore sizes. On the other hand, during solution gas drive the gas first appears as bubbles through a nuclea-tion process. Nothing in self-nucleation theory specifies at which sites the first bubbles should be formed. In all probability they will be randomly distributed throughout the porous medium. Furthermore, it is not at all certain that even at low rates of production the gas will redistribute itself after nucleation to the channels normally occupied by gas in simple gas flow. Stewart, et at, have shown that at least for some limestone samples, oil recoveries could not be predicted for all rates of production using any one set of relative gas and oil permeabilities. An important factor in controlling recoveries during solution gas drive was the rate of bubble formation, higher rates giving higher recoveries. Stewart, et al, attributed the increase in recovery to a better distribution of the gas phase in heterogeneous limestone samples than is obtained by simple external gas drive. Differences in recovery from these causes were not reported for sandstone cores. In the experiments to be reported here, oil recovery, pressure and producing GOR history were measured during solution gas drive for a 5-ft sandstone core. The results were compared with predictions from the Muskat method for computing solution gas-drive behavior using external gas-drive relative permeability. The effects of changing the rate of production and oil viscosity were studied. At high laboratory rates of average pressure decline, two observations were made which would not have been predicted by Muskat's depletion theory: (1) oil recovery increased with increasing rate of production for a given viscosity oil, and (2) oil recovery increased with increasing oil viscosity for a given high rate of production. Both of these observations are explained as consequences of diffusion control of gas saturations superimposed on the normal gas-oil flow requirements, Fur- thermore, discontinuous gas phase flow appears to be significant during solution gas drive. The laboratory tests were performed at rates of average pressure decline many times greater than the maximum possible rate of average pressure decline in an actual oil field. It is, therefore, not possible to draw any direct conclusions regarding the effect of rate on recovery for the solution gas-drive mechanism under actual field conditions. However, at the lower laboratory rates, recoveries were nearly independent of rate and could be predicted by the Muskat method, using external gas-drive relative permeability data. These results suggest that at normal oilfield rates the effect of rate on recovery for the solution gas-drive mechanism is negligible. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The core material for the pressure depletion studies was Bandera sandstone from an outcrop in the Mid-Continent. This sandstone was selected because of its low permeability (about 10 md), which would permit the development of substantial pressure gradients in the corn at moderate flow rates. The core was 5-ft long and 2-in. in diameter. Its properties are listed in Table 1. Relative gas-to-oil permeability ratios were measured by an external gas-drive method2. The results are shown for a short 2-in. core and for the 5-ft core in Fig. 8. Oils used in the pressure depletion experiments were kerosene and a highly refined white oil (standard white oil No. 3) with gas-free viscosities of 1.8 and 25 cp, respectively. The gas was a naturally occurring methane from Gough field, Inglewood, Calif. The oil viscosities, gas solubilities and formation volume factors are plotted as functions of pressure at 75°F in Figs. 1 and 2. Methane viscosities and compressibilities were obtained from the literature"'. A core mounting was required which could withstand up to 2,500 psi internal pressure. A simple model for dilute interslitial solid solutions is set up which enables a solubility equation for the equilibrium between the solid solution and the gaseous solute to be deduced. This solubility equation is used to estimate the partial thermody -namic functions of Ag-O and Fe-N dilute interstitial solid solutions from the measured equilibrium between these solutions and the gas phase. It is shown that the partial excess entropy of the solute atom in solution is a vibrational entropy which is due Principally to the oscillation of the interstitial atom and does not arise from electronic or elastic interaction between the solute atoms and solvent matrix. In this work measurements of the equilibrium between dilute solid interstitial solutions and a gaseous phase are used to deduce the important thermody-namic functions of the solid solution with the aid of a theoretical solubility equation formulated from a knowledge of the thermodynamic functions of the gas and a simple model for the solid solution. The quantity of principal interest which is deduced from the equilibrium data is the change in vibrational entropy occurring when a solute atom (u) is placed in an interstial site in the solvent (u) lattice. This paper forms part of a more general study in which the properties of condensed phases are deduced from measurements of the equilibrium between the condensed phase and a gas. Previous investigations have dealt with the equilibrium between krypton and liquid metals,' a pure metal and its vapor,' and dilute substitutional alloys and the vapor,3 and the subject has been popularly reviewed by McLellan.4 In the latter investigation3 the vapor pressures of very dilute Cu-Ag and Cu-Au alloys were measured with a Knudsen cell technique over a large range of temperatures and the analysis of the vapor-pressure data showed that the relative partial excess entropies were large and positive [ds= -Sudk = 30 for Au-Ag alloys and 150 for Cu-Au alloys; these values should be compared to unity, the value assumed for these exponentials in the quasi-chemical theory of solutions]. For many interstitial solutions experimental data is available for the equilibrium between the solution and a gaseous phase, and this can be used to deduce the vibrational entropies of the solute atoms in solution. The general method employed is to calculate the chemical potential of the solute atoms in the gas and equate this to pi, the chemical potential of solute atoms in the solid, which is deduced from a simple model set up for the dilute interstitial solution (in which the solute atoms act as bound oscillators in interstitial sites). This enables a theoretical solubility equation to be set up. In the case of Ag-O and Fe-N solid solutions the solubility c, is found to vary with temperature according to a relation of the type, where PU2 is the pressure of the O2 or Np molecules. Essentially, the theoretical solubility equation enables the parameter A(T), which gives the vibration entropy, and the parameter AH, which gives the energy of solution of a solute atom, to be estimated from the measured variation of solubility with temperature. The solutions treated are dilute enough to enable solute-solute interactions to be neglected so that the partial energy and excess entropy of solution E, and GS are not functions of composition and the configurational entropy is that of a random solution. Large positive values have been found for sxSu this quantity has not been given sufficient consideration in recent work on interstitial solutions and it is felt that the partial thermodynamic quantities of very dilute solutions should be understood before the thermodynamics of concentrated solutions can be fully appreciated. EXPERIMENTAL DATA 1) The Silver-Oxygen System. The measurements of Steacie and Johnson,= using silver foils, indicate that there is a pronounced minimum in the solubility vs temperature curve for O-Ag solutions. Eichenauer and Miiller6 have recently redetermined the solubility of oxygen in silver using a method developed in the investigation of metal-hydrogen systems.7 The solubility determinations were carried out on compact specimens of differing shapes and sizes and the results indicate a much lower solubility than was obtained by Steacie and Johnson with no minimum at 400°C. REPUBLIC STEEL'S new iron blast furnace in Alabama, shown on the cover of this issue, is the first to be completed of those authorized by the Government last year when a shortage of scrap became acute. In addition to the furnace, the new equipment includes a new battery of by-product coke ovens, a boiler plant, a generating unit, a 3-mile-long 60-in. water line, a huge gas washer, and precipitators in which the dust from the furnace is washed, separated from the water, and fed back into the furnace as raw material. The new unit is a cylindrical steel giant reaching 130 ft. into the air above the ground level. Because of the high humidity in the deep South, the furnace has been air-conditioned to avoid blowing eighteen tons of water into the furnace daily. Designed by Republic engineers who also had charge of the actual construction, the new furnace incorporates the best in modern blastfurnace practice. Orders to proceed with the construction of the furnace were received Sept. 22, 1941. The engineering crew, which was immediately organized, made more than 1500 drawings. Excavation started the next day, and simultaneously work was begun on demolishing existing buildings and preparing the site. The first concrete was poured Oct. 7 and the first piece of steel swung into place by a giant derrick on Jan. 30, 1942. It began operating May 28. A total of 70,000 cu. yd. of earth was moved and 30,000 cu. yd. of concrete poured.

The concentration of a solute in a dilute ),zetallic solution may be measured by any of several parame- ters including weight percent, atom fraction, atom ratio, and lattice ratio. The ratio of filled to unfilled interstitial sites is useful for interstitial solutes. A variable 2 proportional to this ratio is used as a measuve of concentration. It is found that the same equations may be used to express the activity of a nonmetallic solute, sulfur, in liquid solutions of iron containing other solutes, both metallic and nonmetallic. For a nonmetallic solute or for one which strongly increases the actiuity of sulfur, it is convenient to assign arbitvarily a value vj = — 1. When this is done the derivative is found to be constant in each of the ternary solutions studied. The activity coefficient of sulfur in a complex liquid iron solution may be expressed as where nk is a second-order cross product determined in the quaternary solution Fe-S-j-k. The equation is used to calculate tlze activity of sulfur i)z three sevetl- component solutions. IN thermodynamic calculations concerning dilute solutions it is unnecessary to invoke laws and relations which extend across the concentration range to include concentrated solutions. In most binary metallic systems, as arkeen&apos; has recently pointed out, there exist two terminal composition regions of relatively simple behavior, connected by a central region of much greater complexity. When the solute is a nonmetal there is only one such region and in many systems the concentration range is extremely limited. It is the purpose of this paper to suggest a method for the calculation of activities in such a terminal region in which one or more solutes are dissolved in a single solvent of predominantly high concentration. HENRY&apos;S LAW In the usual textbook statement of Henry&apos;s law, concentration is stated in mole fraction. This has the advantage that it makes Henry&apos;s law thermodynamically consistent with Raoult&apos;s law. Since all measures of concentration at infinite dilution are related by simple proportion it follows that mole fraction, molality, atom ratio, weight percent, or any other unit of concentration can be used with the appropriate constant. At finite concentrations, however, calculations based on the law depend upon the unit employed. Deviations from Henry&apos;s law at finite concentrations depend upon the composition variable employed. They are evaluated in terms of activity and interaction coefficients2 which have become familiar features of metallurgical thermodynamics. It is the purpose of this paper to propose a measure of concentration for metallic solutions containing interstitial or nonmetallic solutes by means of which the calculation of activities in complex solutions may be simplified. The discussion will be restricted to free-energy interaction coefficients3 typified by Wagner&apos;s c|a BINARY SOLUTIONS The several measures of concentration which are to be considered are shown in line a of Table I. The corresponding activity coefficients are in line b and the deviation coefficients, sometimes called self-interaction coefficients, are in line c. Henry&apos;s law simply states that the activity coefficient approaches a constant value at infinite dilution. By adoptihg the infinitely dilute solution as the reference state and defining the "Henrian" activity as equal to the concentration in this state, the activity coefficient is always unity at infinite dilution. This convention is far sim~ler and more useful in dilute solution than emploiment of the &apos;Raoultian" activities and it will be used in the following discussion. The several definitions and equations of Table I will be referred to by means of their coordinates in the table. Early observations of deviations from Henry&apos;s law in metallic solutions were shown graphically4 rather than analytically. For the case of sulfur in liquid iron5 the slope of a plot of logfs vs (%S) was constant in the range 0 to 4.8 pct S, indicating constancy of eh2&apos; in Ic. He was proposed by wagnerz and has been widely adopted. The a function of IIIc recently employed by ~arkenl was designed specifically for dilute solutions. Darken has shown that the value of a12 remains essentially constant for many binary solutions within a substantial range of compositions. Internal-friction measurements on hydrogen-charged iron over the temperature range 4° to 300°K are reported. Two relaxation peaks, the hydrogen Snoek peak at 48 °K and the hydrogen cold-work peak in the range 145" to 2200K, are observed at 80 kc per sec. The effects of hydrogen-charging, aging, and deformation on the internal-friction results are determined and are used to show evidence of partitioning of hydrogen between solid solution and dislocations. The hydrogen-dislocation binding energy is estimated from the behaviors of the relaxation tiwzes and relaxation strengths of the Snoek peak and the cold-work peak. Its value is approxi,mately 6400 cal per mole. MANY investigators have demonstrated the usefulness of internal-friction measurements in determining the manner in which interstitial impurities interact with dislocations in bcc metals. Part of this success has resulted from the existence in bcc interstitial alloys of two anelastic relaxation peaks—the Snoek peak&apos; and the cold-work or Koster peak2 (designated hereafter by SP and CWP, respectively). The SP has its origin in the redistribution of interstitials in solid solution among sites made energetically nonequivalent by an applied stress. The rate at which the redistribution occurs, measured by the relaxation time for the process, is related in a simple way to the diffusion rate of the interstitial in the free solution. The relaxation strength is proportional to the concentration of interstitial in solid solution. The CWP appears to have its origin in the relaxation of an interstitial-dislocation complex for which the relaxation time at a given temperature is much longer than that for the SP. The relaxation strength depends strongly on the concentration of interstitial and the amount of deformation at relatively low concentrations and deformations.2-8 From the dependence of the relaxation strength on interstitial concentration, the SP and CWP may serve as measures of the concentrations of interstitials in free solution and bound at dislocations, respectively. Thus their behaviors have been used to investigate interstitial-dislocation interactions in Fe-C, Fe-N, and several refractory metal systems.&apos;-&apos; However, the Fe-H system has not been studied extensively,? even though disputes in recent years over the mechanism of hydrogen embrittlement in steels involve argument over the extent to which lattice hydrogen and hydrogen-dislocation interactions play an important role.?-&apos;&apos; Previous work on Fe-H indicates the internal-friction behavior to be qualitatively consistent with that for other systems. Apparently, both a SP and a CWP are observed in the temperature ranges 30" to 50°K and 100°to 140°K, respectively (at 1 cps). However, there is neither sufficient nor accurate enough information to identify convincingly these peaks with their supposed counterparts in other systems. Nor have there been any attempts to make quantitative use of these peaks to study hydrogen diffusion, aging, or interaction processes. In this paper, an attempt is made to obtain more complete information on internal friction of hydrogen in iron than presently available. Internal-friction measurements in the range 4° to 300°K on hydrogen-charged iron show that the two peaks discussed above are in fact the hydrogen SP and CWP. Several effects of hydrogen charging, aging, and deformation on these peaks are observed and are used to determine the partitioning of hydrogen between solid solution and dislocation sites in iron. EXPERIMENTAL Materials. The starting material for this investigation was a high-purity iron supplied by National Research Corp. as a 1-in.-diam rod. The following analysis was given (inwt pct): C, 0.004; N, 0.0003; 0, 0.007; P, 0.002; S, 0.005; Si, 0.006; Mn, 0.001; Cu, 0.002; Ni, 0.005; Cr, 0.001; Mo, 0.001. IT is a curious fact that while in our Transactions there are papers dealing with mining-districts in all parts of the world, in Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia, there is not one which describes the mining possibilities of Nicaragua; our near neighbor. To be most interested in distant objects, like the moon, .and to neglect what lies at our feet, appears to be a trait of human nature. The neglect of Nicaragua is not confined to the American Institute of Mining Engineers. In no other transactions am I :able to find papers dealing with mining in Nicaragua, some parts of which are as much in need of discovery and research as the North Pole.. I hope this paper will be the precursor of many others to be printed in our Transactions, dealing not only with the mining possibilities of Nicaragua, but with the whole of Central America, where there are vast areas awaiting skill and capital for their development. Much of this capital and skill should come from the United States in the future, although it is probable that European capitalists, when they appreciate fully the possibilities, will investigate more and more the mining-resources of Nicaragua and other Central American republics. Fig. 1 is a sketch-map of Nicaragua showing the principal mining-districts. II. HISTORY. Mining in Nicaragua did not begin yesterday. It was commenced by civilized man when the Spanish conquerors penetrated into the interior and forced the natives to procure the precious metal for them. It is strange that the Spaniards did not find more gold, and work on a scale as extensive as in Colombia and other parts of South America. Probably in Nicaragua the Indians covered up most of the rich prospects

Startup of the 9000 tpd Sacaton concentrator is expected to increase Asarco&apos;s domestic copper concentrate capacity by 21%. The plant site is located due west of the mining operations, consisting of both crushing and concentrating facilities. Arthur G. McKee & Co. served as the prime contractor for the project. The Sacaton mineralization contains both sulfide and oxide ores. Primary mineral constituents are chalcocite, azurite, malachite, chrysocolla, and minor amounts of silver and occasional gold. Sulfides are distinguished from oxides when more than half the total copper content is in the form of a sulfide copper mineral. While non-sulfide copper minerals are considerably less prevalent throughout the orebody, they tend to occur quite intimately with the sulfide minerals, particularly in the upper zones of the mineralization. For this reason the decision was made to treat all the ore in a flotation circuit using existing sulfidizing methods.

All acid mine drain waters, regardless of source, share certain characteristics; but they do differ in exact chemical composition, degree of acidity, and total solids content. Any serious program to treat such waters must recognize these differences and apply to each specific case the technique which offers the best promise of each specific case the technique which offers the best promise of technical and economic success. The Pennsylvania Dept. of Mines and Mineral Industries has originated and funded studies of many different treatment means. Neutralization with lime is now being used on 200 different polluted streams in Pennsylvania, and multistage flash evaporation has been selected for a particularly large and troublesome outfall near Wilkes-Barre, Pa. A 5 x 106 gpd plant for this latter site is now being designed by Westinghouse Electric Corp. which developed a concentration process based on multistage flash evaporation as part of the State&apos;s research program.

TO assist the mining industry in attacking problems of water control, the U. S. Geological Survey has begun a program of research in mining hydrology. In certain fundamental respects water control is similar to development of water supplies from wells or to the drainage of agricultural lands, as many of the tools developed in recent years for quantitative ground-water problems are applicable, with modification, to mine-water problems. In 1952 a 30-day pumping test conducted jointly by the Eureka Corp. Ltd. and the Defense Minerals Exploration Agency provided an opportunity to gain knowledge concerning water movements around a flooded mine shaft. The methods of analyzing the data may be used as a guide for the evaluation of similar problems elsewhere. The Fad shaft of the Eureka Corp. is on Ruby Hill, 1 1/2 miles west of Eureka, Nev. The shaft was completed at a depth of 2465 ft in November 1947 at a site adjacent to the downfaulted block in which the ore was found. As the drift on the 2250 level progressed toward the ore zone, a large flow of water was encountered after the Martin fault was intersected. This flow exceeded the installed pump capacity, and an unsuccessful attempt to recover the shaft and the 2250 level was made in 1948.1, 2 Geology and Hydrology: The complex structure of Ruby Hill is that of an anticline broken first by thrust faulting and later by normal faults. The present orebody comprises several mineralized zones within a block of the Eldorado limestone of middle Cambrian age which was downfaulted 1400 to 1600 ft, and it may be related to a similar body mined at a higher level south of the Ruby Hill fault. At the depth of the largest zone of ore the block is roughly rectangular in shape, about 1000 ft wide and 1500 ft long, and dips about 30" NE, see Fig. 1. It is apparently bounded on the south by the Ruby Hill fault, on the east by the Jackson fault, on the north by the Martin fault, and the west by the Bowman fault. Within the block, but between the Ruby Hill and the Martin faults, are the Office and Adams Hills faults; west of the block and the Bowman fault are the Albion and Spring Valley faults. There are many conflicting reports concerning the water-yielding characteristics of the Eldorado limestone and the condition of the fault zones, that is, whether they are open or tight. However, the diamond-drill records indicate that open spaces as much as 2 or 3 ft across were encountered, and considerable cementing and lining of holes was necessary to maintain circulation of drilling fluid. There is also evidence that the Eldorado limestone was cavernous where it was mined in the early days south of the Ruby Hill fault. At the site of the Fad shaft the formations encountered from the surface down included the Pogonip limestone, Dunderberg shale, Hamburg limestone, and Secret Canyon shale. These formations did not yield large quantities of water to the shaft. The Pogonip limestone, which appears to be permeable and might yield water elsewhere, is above the water table in the vicinity of the shaft. The Secret Canyon shale, immediately overlying the Eldorado in some places but in most places separated from it by the Geddes limestone,3 is apparently tight and does not transmit water. During the 30-day test period the shale briefly confined the water in the underlying formations so that artesian conditions were observed in drillholes E and F, which are cased into the Eldorado limestone, whereas unconfined conditions were observed in drillholes B, C, and D, which were open to the shale. The Geddes limestone, which normally lies between the Secret Canyon shale and the Eldorado limestone, was not encountered in the Fad shaft. The Geddes, a flaggy, fractured limestone, is reported capable of yielding large volumes of water. Water stored in the interstices of this thin-bedded limestone within the Ruby Hill fault zone on the 1200 level of the Locan shaft drowned the pumps in 1923 when the Richmond-Eureka Mining Co. attempted to explore the area along the fault. Eldorado limestone was not encountered in the Fad shaft. In the ore-block area the Eldorado limestone was not entirely offset from other water-yielding formations by movement along the Bowman fault; therefore it may be hydraulically connected with the other formations. Adjacent to the Ruby Hill, Jackson, and Martin faults, the Eldorado lies in contact with other possible water-yielding formations. One of these, the Prospect Mountain quartzite, is separated from the Eldorado by thin, sheared, and broken beds of the Geddes within the Ruby Hill fault zone. A limited examination by the author of the Prospect Mountain quartzite in the Richmond mine at a higher level and south of the Ruby Hill fault indicates that the quartzite is poorly permeable. The monzonite mass south of the quartzite would be a further barrier to the flow of water. The poor permeability of this area is substantiated by records of levels at which water was encountered south of the Ruby Hill fault. In view of the normally low rate of ground-water recharge, if this desert area had been permeable, water levels could not have been maintained at altitudes of many hundred feet above the present water table west and north of Ruby Hill. Thus the ore-bearing block of Eldorado limestone is in contact with possible water-yielding rocks on at least two sides, and if the fault zones are possible conduits for water circulation the geologic and hydrologic conditions are suitable for the infinite-aquifer type of analysis as used and modified here. History of Pumping: During sinking of the Fad shaft a maximum pumping rate of 1500 gpm kept the shaft dewatered sufficiently, but in March 1948, after the 2250 level drift passed through the Martin fault into the Eldorado limestone, the pumps and shaft were flooded. A large reserve of thick coal in southwest Virginia was developed by Clinch-field Coal Co. in 1957-1958 to produce a nominal rate of 1500 tph raw coal. Operation features coal cleaning in transit. Refuse removed averages 35 pct. Evolution of plant from initial conception to completion is discussed, selection of means applied is explained, and performance to date us design expectation is described. The long-range plan calls for ultimate handling capacity of 40,000 tpd raw coal with anticipated clean coal capacity of 26,000 tpd on a three-shift basis. From a materials handling viewpoint, the Moss No. 3 operation is principally of interest as an ensemble. Generally speaking, it uses time-tested equipment and ideas but some of these are employed on a scale that may be new in the industry. At present about 20,000 tpd of raw coal are being handled. This is expected to increase to 40,000 tpd as soon as business conditions justify it. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the evolution of the plant as to materials handling practices, to describe briefly the equipment and methods used, and to comment on performance in certain areas. The subject divides itself naturally into four phases: 1) operations at the mines, 2) transportation from mines to plant, 3) raw coal handling into the plant, and 4) transportation of refuse away from the plant. OPERATIONS AT THE MINES The coal reserves for Moss 3 are in southwest Virginia where Dickenson, Russell, and Buchanan Counties come together. This area contains about 15 square miles and over 100,000,000 tons of coal. Here the No. 4 (Tiller) and No. 5 (Jawbone) seams of the Norton Formation lie so closely together that for practical purposes, they constitute one seam of coal. This seam, which is called the Thick Tiller, varies from 10 to 18 ft in thickness and underlies Sandy Ridge, a mountain cresting between 2400 and 3300 ft above sea-level. At 18-ft seam height (which is considered to be the maximum practical mining height) the parting between seams will be about 3 1/2 ft thick and each bench of coal will be about 7 ft thick. Depending on the amount of impurities in the seams Drover. total reject in this height coal may approximate 50 pet by wt. It will average about 35 pet for the property as a whole. The first move in developing this resource was made in 1953 when contour maps of several square miles around Duty, Va., including all the known outcrop, were made by photogrammetry. At this time, it was felt the prospective operation would be served by the Clinchfield Railroad and a photogrammetric route survey was made by this railroad from Haysi to Duty. Study of the resulting maps indicated only one site—adversely owned—which might accommodate the size washing plant to be erected. Water resources of a dependable nature seemed nonexistent. In 1954 bulk washability tests were made on the Tiller Bench at the Moss No. 1 preparation plant. The tests indicated this portion of the seam, mined separately, would wash to 4 pet ash with good recovery. Also in 1954, development of Moss No. 2, south of Sandy Ridge, was begun. This mine is in the Tiller Seam where it is about 100 ft below the Jawbone Seam. The reasons for developing a mine in the normal Tiller Seam before tackling the Thick Tiller seemed compelling: Railroad service could be established quickly, communications were better (though not good!), more was known of the seam (it had been mined in the years 1911 to 19241, and there was no essential property to be acquired. After some legal skirmishing, the Norfolk & Western Railroad was granted the right to serve the new mine. Three decades earlier the old mine had been served by the Clinchfield Railroad. The event which triggered active development of Moss 3 was the Appalachian Power Co.&apos;s decision in 1956 to build a 450,000-kva power plant on Clinch River at Carbo. This solved the problem of marketing the steam coal which inevitably must be a product of a mine in the Thick Tiller. Management promptly decided to build the preparation plant at Carbo where an excellent site was owned; where railroad service existed; where telephone service could be obtained; and where roads, bridges, and water supply were tolerable.

FEW indeed are the sections of the country where trained or partly trained workers have not already been hired by a war industry plant or will be within the near future. Yet right in the midst of the heavily industrialized East lies the anthracite area, home of a million people, whose productive power has persistently been by-passed either by private industry or by the Government Plant Site Board. The chief reason given for not locating war plants in the area is that it is not within the strategic zone, but in numerous instances elsewhere this rule has been waived. Furthermore, the anthracite region is well protected on all sides by mountains and is at all points more than 100 miles inland. Continued depression in the anthracite industry and a crippling blow dealt by the war emergency to the production of silk and rayon goods, the chief manufacturing activity of the area, have resulted in a heavy migration, particularly of trained young workers, into near-by industrial areas. At least 50,000 people are currently unemployed, with the likelihood of an increase in coming months, and as many families are on relief.

THE phenomenon of air-hardening is well known in connection with special steels. It occurs when the rate of decomposition of austenite to marten- site is so retarded that it takes place on free cooling in air rather than on more rapid cooling in a quenching bath. If an air-hardening steel is quenched sufficiently rapidly it will remain in the soft austenitic state, while if it is cooled very slowly it will again become soft owing to growth of the carbide particles. It depends on a critical adjustment of the decomposition velocity and diffusion rate, and such alloys are rather rare, especially in the non-ferrous field. In carrying out some experiments on some copper- rich copper-cobalt alloys, the author found that these possess very marked air-hardening properties. The alloys are covered by a patent issued to M. G. Corson (1,723,022-1919), which states that an alloy containing between 2 and 5 per cent cobalt is hardened by simple quenching from above 850° C.

Hugh E. McKinstry (Professor of Geology, Laboratory of Mining Geology, Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass.) Pre-Cambrian age for the Coeur d&apos;Alene mineralization, as indicated by isotope studies and recently discussed by Silverman, Long, and Kulp&apos; would explain some features of the mineralogy of the district that have long been a puzzle. In the Silver Belt, especially in the Sunshine mine, lead-zinc min erali zation passes downward into tetrahedrite ore. Although commercially speaking this is a rich silver zone, the silver is, quantitatively, a mere impurity amounting to a small fraction of 1 pct. In effect the zonal change is from lead-zinc down into copper mineralization—-the usual zonal change that occurs in many districts. In the Burke-Mullan portion of the district, on the other hand, lead-zinc ore does not pass downward into copper mineralization of the Sunshine type. Instead, pyrrhotite appears in depth while the tenor in lead and zinc declines. The change occurs at increasingly greater depth away from the Gem stocks, deepening irregularly by some 3000 ft within two to four miles. As noted by Crosby, biotite, grunerite, and garnet appear in the deep zone. The marked difference between this apparent zonal change and the more nomal change to a copper zone is quite explainable if already existing pre-Cambrian veins have been locally metamorphosed by a Tertiary intrusive. The chief obstacle to this explanation is the evidence that mineralization cuts Laramide intrusives, but evidence on this point is conflicting as indicated by Crosby&apos;s observations and summary. This is not the first instance of a problem in determining the time-relationship of mineralization to a spatially associated intrusive. At the Noranda mine veins of chalcopyrite extend into a diabase dike which apparently cuts the ore, although Price2 concludes that the ore is later. However, at the Normetal mine diabase of a similar dike is thought3 to intrude the orebody but is cut by stringers of chalcopyrite. In the Sullivan Mine, B. C.,4 galena follows a fracture in a larnprophyre dike which, itself, cuts the main orebody. In the Sudbury district dikes of olivine diabase are clearly younger than the nickel ore, yet where they cut the Creighton orebody they contain stringers of chalcopyrite. In the laboratory, Hawley5 has developed veinlets of sulfide (chalcopyrite) it] silicate gangue by heating specimens of ore in a stream of H2S at 410 °C. From this and other evidernce. it seems clear that sulfides can be transferred from one site to another — at least through short distances — at temperatures well below their melting points. It would seem then that even if sulfide Mineralization in the Gem stocks can be shown unequ ivocably to be later than the intrusive the possibility of "remobiliza tion" need not be more than local. Thus the zonal relationships are quite in accord with a pre-Cambrian age for original deposition of the lead, zinc, copper, silver, and uranium in the Coeur d&apos;Alene district. REFERENCES 1. A. THE pioneer mining company in Idaho to use airplanes extensively is the Yellow Pine project at Stibnite now owned by the Bradley interests. From 1901 to 1903 the gold boom at Thunder Mountain, in central Idaho overflowed to adjacent areas, prospectors discovering cinnabar and stibnite near the present site of Stibnite in Valley County. The workings were practically abandoned by 1911 through lack of capital and high costs of transportation on pack train roads over several mountain passes open only five months each year. During the World War there was some prospecting and production, and in 1921 twelve of the original companies were merged. Small-scale mining up to 1927 proved that an expenditure of several million dollars would be necessary to operate profitably. These properties were purchased by the Bradley interests during the period of 1927 to 1930. In 1927, there was no mining equipment except hand tools, no telephones, and only one building. High-grade copper ore was discovered in 1932 in the long-dormant Mountain City (Cope) mining district, Elko County, Nevada. From 1932 to 1947, the one producing mine in the district, the Mountain City Copper Mine, produced 1,109,878 short dry tons of ore averaging 9.745 per cent copper, 0.274 ounces of silver, and 0.0057 ounces of gold per ton. The Mountain City Copper Mine is developed in eugeosynclinal rocks of Ordovician age, the Valmy Formation, which is part of the upper plate of the Roberts Mountains thrust. On the Valmy were deposited unconformably first, a elastic formation of Devonian or Mississippian age, the Grossman Formation, succeeded unconformably by a ·sequence of three conformable formations, the Banner, the Nelson, and the Mountain City. The Banner Formation probably is early Late Mississippian in age; the ages of the Nelson and Mountain City are not known precisely but are believed to be of Late Mississippian and Carboniferous(?) age, respectively. A thick formation of elastic rocks, limestone, and volcanics, the Reservation Hill Formation, has been thrust over the Mountain City. The age of the Reservation Hill is unknown but is presumed to be Pennsylvanian(?) and Permian(?). Several plutons of Cretaceous quartz monzonite intrude the Paleozoic formations; they and the intruded formations have been laid bare by erosion, and several sequences of volcanic rocks of Miocene and Pliocene age, and perhaps in part older, have been successively deposited on irregular erosion surfaces. The primary mineralization of the Mountain City Copper Mine is believed to postdate the deposition of the Nelson Formation and to predate the intrusion of the quartz monzonite. The primary ore bodies are lenticular in shape and are composed largely of quartz, pyrite, and chalcopyrite. The ore lenses, in general, strike northwestward and dip northward. They occur in the Valmy Formation within a definite stratigraphic sequence composed largely of shales with associated minor quartzite lenses. The ore is epigenetic. The principal ore body, the "200," was completely leached to the 200 level. Abruptly beneath the barren gossan was supergene copper sulfide ore, much of which assayed 50 per cent copper. The secondary copper minerals are sooty and massive chalcocite, bornite, and covellite. The supergene enrichment of the ore may have required a large part of Tertiary time.

GOING west from Denver on Route 6, the direct road to Grand Junction, one gets the first glimpse of mining a few miles east of Denver near Idaho Springs where the workings of defunct gold mines are visible on the sides of mountains along the highway. One enterprising company is turning a profit by showing tourists through the mine and mill and then selling them gold samples on the way out. We have always known that mining people are ingenious, but this proves it. About five and a half hours fast driving west from Denver brings one to Rifle, Colo., which is the site of the oil shale mine, retorting plant, and refinery of the U. S. Bureau of Mines. As you drive up to the mine, you can see a portal high on the face of the cliff in front of you where the mine surface plant literally hangs by its toenails. Below, the retorting plant and refinery gleam in the sunlight. Up at the mine, Fred Wright will show you how the oil shale is extracted in two benches (a third bench would be used for commercial mining) by the room-and-pillar method. In mining the top level, an underground crew of thirteen men have been able to produce 1500 tons of shale in each eight-hour shift. To do this, the mine is thoroughly mechanized. The mining method is de- scribed in the September issue of Mining Engineering.

APRIL 10-Officially, spring comes to the Great Lakes on March 21 as it does elsewhere in the country but in the Superior district continued snow and freezing until late in March have caused citizens in Duluth to place their bets on April 15 for the first ore vessels if the ice breakup is left to Mother Nature. North and west of Duluth and near the eastern end of the Mesabilies the little town of Aurora, population 1100. As the little v-nosed snowplow, pride of the community, shuttled back and forth clearing Aurora&apos;s few sidewalks, the crowd in Bradich&apos;s Cafe were more interested in the impending high school state championship basketball tournament in Minneapolis than in the outcome of Erie Mining Company&apos;s petition for water rights for their proposed 10 million ton taconite concentrating plant. Such a plant would employ 4500 workmen, and at the prevailing ratio of 10 people for every mine worker in Minnesota, this would mean a 45,000 increase in population for Aurora and the vicinity in the next few years. Downstate fishermen are alarmed at the flurry of activity by the mining companies in pushing plans for large scale recovery of iron from taconite. Inconvenience to these gentlemen will be inconsequential when compared with the vast increase in payrolls for range communities. Oliver is pushing the construction of a fine ore agglomeration plant at Virginia which will give them valuable experience for projected taconite processing. Oglebay, Norton & Co. is ready to go at Beaver Bay, north of Duluth, as the right of way for a railroad from Babitt to Beaver Bay is secured as well as permission to dispose of tailing into Lake Superior at the site of the proposed concentrating plant. This company is also doing research in agglomeration at Ashland, Ky., in cooperation with other interests. The financing is yet to be worked out. Of the four possibilities for agglomerating taconite concentrate-sintering, pellitizing, nodulizing and briquetting-the prospects for pelletizing appear the most favorable., It seems likely that 60 cents per ton can be saved by this process over sintering because only 1 to 2 pct of coal is required as compared with 7 pct for sintering. One reason for the lower coal consumption is that the chemical transition of magnetite to hematite which transpires in the pelletizing process is exothermic.
