"After detonation of the explosive, the final blast-induced damage area around the blast-hole falls into three categories, namely crushed zone, fractured zone, and elastic deformation zone. This paper presents a modified model to calculate the size of crushed zone around a blast-hole in drill-and-blast, with the hoop compressive stress and cavity expansion effect taken into account. The material in the crushed zone was assumed to be a granular medium without cohesion, but with internal friction. On this basis, the formula for crushing zone radius was derived. The proposed approach was verified with tests reported in the literature and the simulated results from SPH-FEM coupled models. A full statistical analysis was also carried out, and the predicted values were found to be in better agreement with the test results compared with other models. A sensitivity analysis of the modified model showed that the size of the blast-induced damage area is mainly affected by the following factors: rock mass properties, in situ stress, and borehole pressure. In particular, the roles of borehole pressure and in situ stress are discussed. Finally, suggestions are made on how the size of the crushing zones can be decreased. IntroductionOver the past decades, drill-and-blast has become the most commonly used technology in rock excavation. It is well known that in rock mass fragmentation with explosives, the annular rocks around the blast-hole are converted into fines. The formation of these fines consumes a significant part of the energy of the detonation, which in general is ignored in the determination of the efficiency of detonation (Glatolenkov and Ivanov, 1992; Furtney et al., 2012). Many studies show that only 20–30% of the total explosive energy is effectively used in fragmenting the rock, and up to 50% of the energy generated by conventional charges is wasted in overcrushing of the crushed zone and the inner part of the fractured zone (Ouchterlony et al., 2004; Sanchidrian et al., 2007). How to control the crushed zone to enhance the effective utilization of explosive energy, reducing the unit explosive consumption and the engineering cost, is therefore of great significance."

Effective perimeter control during drilling and blasting is critical not only to blasting results but also to the overall stability of the pit over its entire life span. A pit where perimeter control is not given enough attention when conducting drilling and blasting operations, often experiences over-break or back break beyond final pit wall limits, and therefore has a relatively high probability of failure. Such a pit also becomes unsafe, sometimes not easily accessible, has increased loading costs due to production of oversize, longer cycle times and often problems are encountered when blasting subsequent benches. All these are undesirable consequences, which have negative cost implications. Specialised blasting techniques such as trim blasting and pre-splitting have over the years proved to be effective perimeter control measures. However, the success of these techniques is directly attributable to the time and effort given to the processes. This paper presents results of a project undertaken to monitor, review and optimize the trim blasting and pre-splitting processes at Orapa Diamond Mine in Botswana. The project was specifically incepted to improve the final wall conditions, which continued to deteriorate due to persistent over-break during blasting. The paper also analyses the results obtained against a benchmark of results taken prior to project implementation. Specific blast design parameters which are critical to blasting results were identified as problem areas after auditing of the pre-implementation drilling and blasting practices. These include drill-hole depth, spacing, splitting factor for pre-splits and timing of trim blasts. The impact of different rock types on the results was also studied, and recommendations were made at different phases of the project and results obtained after implementation analysed until optimum results were achieved.

The Namakwa Sands heavy mineral deposit is located along the West Coast of South Africa and the mine is a world class producer of high quality zircon, ilmenite and rutile concentrates from essentially unconsolidated marine and aeolian sands of Cainozoic age. The objective of this study was to characterize rutile with respect to distribution, grain size, textures, colour and mineral chemistry within the Namakwa Sands orebody with the aim to explain its overall poor recovery. A representative suite of heavy mineral concentrates from various sections of the orebody and stages in the recovery circuit has been investigated microscopically and by means of SEM-EDS and LA-ICP-MS. The rutile grain size distribution displays a wide range and is directly related to its variable chemistry and consequently density. In placer deposits such as Namakwa Sands, mineral sorting is a function of hydraulic equivalence, and high density grains are smaller than the lighter grains when deposited under similar conditions. Grain size is also a function of sediment maturity, and the highly mature red aeolians and (RAS) component of the deposit has a coarser grain size than the less mature orange feldspathic marine sands (OFS). The above primary characteristics of rutile are responsible for the loss of the coarse-grained fraction during screening and, given the empirically determined relationship that increased substitution elements reduce conductivity, also during electrostatic separation. Provenance studies using geothermometry have shown that the heavy mineral suite has been sourced mainly by the proximal medium-to high-grade Namaqualand Metamorphic Complex. The positive relationship between substitution elements and temperature of formation explains their high concentration in rutile of this deposit. The heterogeneity of rutile, produced by the combination of a high temperature primary source and the typical marine-aeolian placer genesis is deposit specific and unfortunately not conducive to high recovery levels in the current Namakwa Sands beneficiation circuit.

The leaching kinetics of cerium (Ce) and yttrium (Y) in sodium-hydroxide-digested non-magnetic coal fly ash using acetic acid were investigated. The variables analysed were pH, solid-to-liquid ratio (S/L), and temperature. The results show that cerium and yttrium's maximum recovery was 57.33% and 58.36%, respectively, under leaching temperature of 90°C for Ce and 60°C for Y at pH of 1,74 and 10 g/mL solid-liquid ratio in 240 minutes. Increasing the leaching time to more than 120 minutes did not significantly improve the results. After the magnetic separation process, the ICP-OES analysis shows a slight increase in the concentration of cerium and yttrium on nonmagnetic components. The XRD and ICP-OES analysis for the sample before and after silicate digestion shows that 40% silicate was dissolved. The calculation of apparent activation energies of leaching using the Arrhenius law for the leaching of cerium and yttrium gives 22.72 kJ/mol and 35.84 kJ/mol, respectively. The kinetic leaching model of cerium and yttrium all fit Dickinson's new shrinking core model. The calculation results show that the leaching reaction is controlled by combining interface transfer and diffusion across the product layer.

"As geological and mining conditions become more complex, and as overall mining economics become more marginal, short- and long-range decision-making regarding multiple-seam surface mining becomes more difficult. The decision-making problem involves a study of economics, cut-off grades and ratios, equipment capabilities, sequencing and selective mining practices.This paper is concerned primarily with multiple-seam mining of bituminous coal. The research has led to the development of an economic decision-making model for use as a day-to-day tool to aid mine operators and pit geologists to decide what and how to mine.The model is designed as an aid for feasibility decision-making in multiple-scam situations and for situations where selective mining is needed or desired. In effect, a simulation of the feasibility and preliminary mine planning phases has been developed. The model is divided into four separate segments: decision-making, simulated mining, cost calculations and the determination of the discounted cash flow return on investment."

Over many decades, numerous feasibility studies have demonstrated, that the production of sulphuric acid remains the most viable option of sulphur recovery from smelter off gas and abatement of SO2 emissions to the atmosphere. This is particularly more pronounced as smaller but more concentrated off-gas flows are to be treated from smelters, and enhanced sulphuric acid processes be-come available. Off-gas handling systems represent a significant capital and operating cost burden to the metallurgical operation. Modern pyrometallurgical smelter processes for sulphide ores based on the use of oxygen-enriched air, produce relatively small off-gas flows with high SO2 concentrations in the smelter gas of 30?60 %-vol. of SO2. This is a prerequisite for substantial cost reductions in the smelter off-gas handling and treatment system. As an alternative to sulphuric acid production, numerous scrubbing concepts with alkali or dual-alkali combinations as well as organic absorbents have been proposed. Also the reduction of the SO2 to elemental sulphur has frequently been studied. Very few of those alternative processes have been built in industrial scale, but all were generally characterized by none sustainable operation due to cost reasons, problems with issues related to chemicals used and by-products or poor availability. Thus the traditional concept of converting the SO2 to sulphuric acid is most common, although regarded as un-economic, but is at least a proven, environmentally sustainable and reliable way of sulphur gas processing. With the high acid price levels these days, operating companies are even able to generate significant revenue with their otherwise ?fatal? acid.

The wear in mild steel pipelines used to convey rod-milled waste backfill was determined and then compared with that obtained using a laboratory rig designed to simulate the wear condition in slurry pipelines. The relative importance of corrosion and abrasion was investigated under various conditions of water quality and particle size distribution. The laboratory rig was then used to evaluate other possible materials of construction for backfill pipelines. A preliminary assessment of the economic viability of pipelines made of alternative materials is included.

Zimbabwe hosts a varied array of coloured gemstones. With the exception of emerald deposits and several world-class pegmatites, few of the gemstone occurrences have received detailed attention from the scientific or mineral exploration communities. In the present contribution we summarize the status of knowledge of the gemstone deposits and occurrences in Zimbabwe, paying particular attention to the geological settings in which they were formed. Synthesis of this regional geological approach reveals that there may be significant exploration potential for further gemstone occurrences, particularly in the extensive pegmatite fields and in Al-enriched orogenic belts that have undergone greenschist to granulite facies metamorphism. Further socio-economic and developmental initiatives will aid in optimizing the value generation from this important sub-sector.

Slope stability is a fundamental part of a successful mining operation. It impacts directly on the safety of personnel and the economics of the mine. The Jwaneng Mine in Botswana is planning a push back of 644m depth in the south east wall. Mining will commence in 2010 and be completed in 2024. This will put the mine in the deep pit category. The mine has invested in extensive geotechnical data gathering and design programs that started as far back as 2003 for the south east wall. The south east wail of Jwaneng Mine is characterized by foliation that dips adversely into the mining faces. The orienta1ion of the foliation is variable due to intense tectonic movements that have also caused the occurrence of faults that are sub-vertical. A considerable amount of information on the characteristics of structural patterns and the rock mass has been collected. This paper presents an overview of the feasibility level geotechnical design that is about to be concluded.

Coal is a complex mixture of organic and mineral constituents and is the most abundant resource of fossil energy in the world. In recent years, significant research into dry coal beneficiation has gained much attention, primarily due to the need to improve grades and reduce the environmental contaminants in coal without the use of water, and to achieve this in as cost-effective manner as possible, relative to wet beneficiation processes. This paper seeks to review the application of various electrostatic separators with their process principles, to draw comparisons between different dry beneficiation techniques with specific emphasis on the tribo-electrostatic separation method, and finally to report the results of tribo electrostatic separation conducted on various South African coals. Previous research conducted on Indian, European and American coals has indicated that this technique is likely to lead to significant economic benefit through the reduction of ash content, NOx and more specifically Sox by separating out the liberated Fe-S-bearing minerals prior to utilization. The removal of the latter suite of minerals is also likely to significantly reduce or eliminate the emissions of associated trace elements, including mercury and arsenic. The research results reported in this paper indicate that the rotary tribo-electrostatic process has the potential for significant upgrading of high ash pulverized South African coal. The impact of various operational parameters was investigated and key factors established for the optimum recovery of low ash and low sulphur fine coal.

The idea of GOLD 100, an international conference on gold, was first conceived by Mr Les Haughton of Mintek in mid 1984. By the beginning of 1985, plans were well advanced to hold what was to be the most comprehensive conference on gold ever organized. Appropriately, GOLD 100 was timed to coincide with the celebration of Johannesburg's centenary. Leaching The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy will hold a two-day colloquium on the topic of leaching on 8th and 9th November, 1988, with the objective of bringing the latest developments in leaching technology to the attention of the mineral-processing industry.

Exxaro installed their first ultra fines treatment plant at Leeuwpan Coal mine. The plant is now fully operational and results already show that the plant has great potential. The plant was designed and installed by DRA. Several challenges were faced during the installation due to the space constraints in the Leeuwpan plant. Efficiency tests were conducted on both modules after commissioning and showed very promising results. A lower ash product with a higher yield can be produced with the fine coal dense medium cyclones compared to the spirals previously employed.

The surface chemistry features of spodumene and feldspar were investigated by XPS, zeta potential measurements and first principle calculation. The results indicated that the zeta potential of feldspar was more negative than that of spodumene. The most possible active sites on spodumene and feldspar were Al sites and O sites. However, the number, type and activity of these sites were different. The flotation behaviour of five new collectors (cationic collector decyloxy-propyl-amine (DPA), anionic collector α-bromododecanoic acid (α-BDDA), N-Dodecyliminodiacetic acid (DIDA), and mixed collector DPA-BDDA and DPA-DIDA) were investigated through micro flotation experiments and analysed based on the surface chemistry features of spodumene and feldspar. The results revealed that cationic collector DPA processed a high collecting capacity for both minerals. The highest recovery of spodumene and feldspar was 91.60% and 95.30% respectively. The anionic collector α-BDDA and DIDA showed poor flotation behaviour. The recovery of spodumene and feldspar when using α-BDDA as collector was less than 5% and when using DIDA as collector was less than 1%. For the mixed collector DPA-BDDA, the recovery of spodumene and feldspar was 82.27% and 32.61% respectively at pH 4.5. For mixed collector DPA-DIDA, the recovery of spodumene and feldspar was 35.69% and 9.08% respectively at pH 5.8. The results indicated that the cationic collector had high collecting capacity, but low selectivity. The collecting capacity of anionic collector for spodumene and feldspar was poor at the same concentration compared with cationic collectors. Mixed collector DPA-BDDA showed good flotation behaviour and selectivity on spodumene. The ―COO- in mixed collector might improve the selectivity. However, too much ―COO- would increase the electrostatic repulsion, which might cause low selectively and poor recovery. ABSTRACT: A fully dynamic, two dimensional, stability analysis of a highly discontinuous rock slope is demonstrated in this paper. The studied rock slope is the upper terrace of King Herod’s Palace in Masada, situated on the western margins of the seismically active Dead Sea Rift. The dynamic deformation of the slope is calculated using a fully dynamic version of DDA in which time dependent acceleration is used as input. The analytically determined failure modes of critical keyblocks in the jointed rock slope are clearly predicted by DDA at the end of the dynamic calculation. It is found however that for realistic displacement estimates some amount of energy dissipation must be introduced into the otherwise fully elastic, un-damped, DDA formulation. Comparison of predicted damage with actual slope performance over historic time span window of 2000 years allows us to conclude that introduction of 2% kinetic damping should suffice for realistic damage predictions. This conclusion is in agreement with recent results of Tsesarsky, Hatzor and Sitar (2002) who compared displacements of a single block on an inclined plane subjected to dynamic loading obtained by DDA and by shaking table experiments. Using dynamic DDA it is shown that introduction of a simple rock bolting pattern completely stabilizes the slope. RÉSUMÉ : On présente dans cet article une analyse bidimensionnelle complète de la stabilité d’une pente rocheuse très fracturée. La pente rocheuse étudiée est la terrasse supérieure du Palais du roi Hérode à Massada, située sur la rive Ouest du Rift sismiquement actif de la Mer Morte. La pente est constituée de blocs de dolomite raide présentant une stratification sub-horizontale et des joints sub-verticaux. La déformation dynamique de la pente est calculée en utilisant une version entièrement dynamique de l’Analyse de Déformation Discontinue (DDA) où l’accélération dépendant du temps est utilisée comme donnée. Les modes de rupture déterminés analytiquement des blocs clés dans la pente rocheuse fracturée sont clairement prévus par l’approche DDA à la fin du calcul dynamique. On trouve cependant, que pour obtenir des estimations réalistes du déplacement, il faut introduire un facteur de dissipation énergétique sans lequel la formulation DDA serait totalement élastique et sans amortissement. En comparant l’endommagement prévu avec les caractéristiques de la pente sur une période historique de 2000 ans, nous pouvons conclure que l’introduction d’un amortissement cinématique de 2% suffit pour obtenir de prévisions réalistes. Cette conclusion est conforme aux résultats récents de Tsesarsky, Hatzor and Sitar (2002) qui ont comparé les déplacements d’un bloc isolé sur un plan incliné sous chargement dynamique obtenus avec l’analyse DDA et à partir d’essais sur table vibrante. Der untersuchte Hang ist die obere Terrasse des Herodespalastes in Massada, welche in den westlichen Randgebieten des seismisch aktiven Toten Meer Grabens liegt.Die dynamische Deformation des Berghangs wird mit Hilfe einer vollstaendig dynamischen DDA-Version berechnet, in welcher als Input die zeitabhaengige Beschleunigung eingegeben wird. Die analytisch bestimmten Versagensarten kritischer Schluesselbloecke in diesem zerkluefteten Steinhang werden durch Anwendung von DDA am Ende der dynamischen Berechnung klar vorausgesagt. Es zeigt sich jedoch, dass fuer realistische Dislozierungs-Abschaetzungen ein gewisses Mass an Energieverlust in der sonst vollstaendig elastischen, ungedaempften DDA-Fassung einbezogen werden muss. Der Vergleich des vorhergesagten Schadens mit dem aktuellen Verhalten des Berghangs waehrend einer historischen Zeitspanne von 2000 Jahren erlaubt uns zu schliessen, dass ein Zusatz von 2% kinetischer Daempfung fuer eine realistische Vorhersage des Schadens ausreichen sollte. Diese Schlussfolgerung steht im Einvernehmen mit neuen Ergebnissen von Tsesarsky, Hatzor und Sitar (2002), welche die Dislozierung eines einzelnen Blocks auf geneigter Ebene unter dynamischer Belastung – unter Anwendung von DDA und “shaking table”-Versuchen – verglichen. Mit Hilfe der dynamischen DDA wird gezeigt, dass der Steinhang durch Anwendung einer einfachen Steinschraubenstruktur vollkommen stabilisiert werden kann.

SYNOPSIS The paper gives a background to the water hazards of the so-called West Wits Line and refers to some geological aspects of the Wonderfontein Valley in which the West Driefontein mine property lies. It describes the precautions taken against flooding during shaft sinking, development and stoping; these include cover hole drilling with cementation, provision for water storage in worked-out areas, installation of water tight bulkhead doors and pumping capacity well in excess of the mine's normal requirements. The plan of campaign adopted after the inrush took place is explained and the reorganization and expansion of pumping arrangements are discussed. When it became clear that the only means of saving the mine was to construct plugs to isolate the inrush while still maintaining all emergency pumping measures, the work was put in hand with the utmost dispatch. In considering the design of the plugs a number of major factors had to be taken into account. The most vital was the need for speed which was complicated by difficulty of access to the plug sites because of the huge volumes of water flowing in the drives. How this and other factors affecting plug design and construction, leakage problems, sequence of operations and final closure of the valves, were overcome is detailed in the paper. INTRODUCTION The inrush of water into the West Driefontein mine, the biggest gold producer in the world, which began on 26th October, 1968 and continued unabated for 23 days before the flood was stemmed, was unprecedented in the history of mining. Also unprecedented were the tremendous efforts and organization which made it possible to bring the situation under control and so save the mine from being lost for a matter of years. BACKGROUND Before going into details of how the situation was brought under control it is appropriate to consider the background to the event. The water problem on the so-called West Wits Line has been recognized for many years. As far back as 1912 the Pullinger Shaft, situated in the centre of what is now the Venterspost mine property, had to be abandoned because there were no means then available of coping with the large quantity of water encountered. To appreciate what vast quantities of water were involved, it helps to refer to some geological aspects of the Wonderfontein valley in which the West Driefontein property lies. The narrow tabular Witwatersrand gold-bearing beds, which dip at about 25 degrees towards the south, are overlain by a surface layer of dolomite which reaches a maximum thickness of some 4,000 ft at West Driefontein. A number of vertical syenitic dykes intersect the valley more or less at right angles to its course (Fig. 1). These dykes are about 150 ft thick on average and are spaced at about eight-mile intervals in the West Driefontein area. They penetrate both the dolomite and the Witwatersrand beds and as they are impervious to water they divide the valley into a series of large underground water compartments.

An account is given of the development of ferritic stainless steels since their discovery in the early years of this century. The alloys became very widely used in the 1950s, the market during that decade being driven strongly by a demand for automobile trim made of ferritic stainless steel. The production of ferritic stainless steel declined as a proportion of the total at the end of the 1950s as consumer preferences changed. However, the market is now growing strongly again, this time driven by a demand for oxidation-resistant alloys for motor-vehicle exhaust systems. The tonnages produced, applications, and market shares of the various alloys are discussed and compared. Trends in world stainless-steel production, product forms, technological development, and usage are examined.

"Zircon is a naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM) and as such is subject to a variety of regulations around the world. The regulatory processes and their implementation are summarized and the key issues affecting zircon and zirconia highlighted. Having absorbed the activities of the former Zircon Minerals Committee, the strategy of the Zircon Industry Association (ZIA) is to be the ‘go-to place’ for information on these matters, and its activities in the NORM space are described. Chemical industry regulations such as REACH are spreading around the world, and the paper provides an update of their status in the key jurisdictions. As mineral sands are transported to market in oceangoing vessels, they are subject to the regulations of the International Maritime Organization, which are summarized in the paper. IntroductionFrom a global perspective, zircon is generally not found in high concentrations other than in placer and dune deposits where it has been deposited along with other heavy minerals such as ilmenite, rutile, and monazite. Such deposits have been sorted and concentrated over geological time by the action of tides, waves, and wind to form concentrated deposits of heavy minerals along old coastlines and in river beds and deltas. Consequently, zircon is mostly found in association with the principal titanium minerals ilmenite and rutile. These secondary concentrations in placer deposits provide the commercial sources of zircon.All geological materials contain natural radioactivity, although the term NORM (naturally occurring radioactive material) is mostly used for minerals and other materials with above-average uranium and thorium concentrations. Importantly, the radioactive nature of zircon has not changed, but the way in which radioactivity is viewed by regulators has, affecting the zircon industry throughout the value chain."
