A lightweight fiberglass feed leg for hand-held pneumatic percussion rock drills has been fabricated and tested by the Bureau of Mines. Its lighter weight facilitates easier handling of the rock drill apparatus, thereby reducing the potential for back injury to the driller and in- creasing drilling productivity. Current hand-held feed leg drills of the same class are 50 pct heavier than the Bureau-devised feed leg drill, which is comprised of a reduced-noise drill and the fiberglass feed leg. In-mine tests of the fiberglass leg showed that its performance and cost are comparable to those of standard aluminum feed legs.

"The increase in tunneling operations that requires working under pressures greater than that of ordinary atmosphere has raised the question of the use and possible limitations of respiratory protective devices under such unusual conditions. As little, if any, information is available, there is need for a comprehensive study of this subject before specific recommendations can be made. In the absence of such data it seems desirable to make a few preliminary observations regarding the problems associated with wearing respiratory protective devices under increased air pressures.Two distinct problems must be considered--the mechanics of the apparatus used under such conditions and the physiological effects of increased pressures on wearers of respiratory apparatus. The exingencies of a world war have brought home to the American public, especially the people of the. Eastern States, the urgent need for conserving fuel. Transportation problems in the East have created an unprecedented situation wherein fuel-oil supplies are greatly restricted, and the consequent increase in demand for coal further complicates the problem of transporting and storing that commodity. People should awaken to the need for utilizing every possibly means of conserving to fuel, even to the extent of reducing the temperature in their homes.

A comprehensive review of published research was carried out to identify methods for teaching and assessing critical but nonroutine skills needed for coping with emergency situations. Computerized searches of the relevant data bases were carried out, along with identification of relevant articles and materials by personal contact with experts in many fields. The citations listed in this bibliography resulted from this systematic literature search and review. The computer searches and an analysis of this literature are described in technical report 1. Specific methods for assessing critical skills proficiency in aviation, medicine, organization management, the military, and other industrial/ technical workplaces were described. The potential application of these methods for teaching and assessing (1) critical first aid and (2) self-rescue and escape skills to underground coal miners in annual refresher training was explored. Research and development activities that may improve mine health and safety training were suggested. Most of the entries in this bibliography were assembled in 1984 through 1985. Study of these materials contributed to the completion of the project research that followed. This later work is reported in the project technical report 2 and the final report. This bibliography is most useful when combined with examination of technical reports 1 and 2 and the final project report.

U.S. supply and demand data for dry natural gas by source, form, and major consuming sectors--within and between States and defined regions--were tabulated for the years 1960 and 1965. State-by-State quantitative data are provided for the natural gas industry that can be arranged into regional groupings and used to determine regional flow patterns. The tables show the derivation of the total supply of gas available for consumption from total marketed production. The tables also report the distribution of the supply among the major consuming sectors (household and commercial, industrial, transportation, and electricity generation, utilities). The summarized data show an increase in the absolute demand for natural gas in all regions for the period 1960-65, although the relative posit ions of the various subregions, with respect to national consumption, remained about the same. To enable comparison of data on dry natural gas with data on other energy sources, quantities in terms of million cubic feet were converted to British thermal unit (Btu) equivalents.

The Bureau of Mines performed laboratory research into the effects of a barium-based fuel additive (the "postflame" type) on diesel particulate matter (DPM) emissions. The 5.6-L, six-cylinder test engine is typical of types certifiable for use in underground mines. Test parameters consisted of additive concentration and engine loads, speed, and air intake restriction. DPM emissions, including condensed volatiles, were measured gravimetrically. Also measured were gaseous emissions including carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and hydrocarbons. The fuel additive was effective, reducing DPM up to 75 pct, when used at a concentration of 0.09 wt pct (one-fourth of the concentration recommended by the manufacturer). The additive was most effective at the highest fuel-air ratios, reducing DPM from 400 mg/m3 for untreated fuel to 120 mg/m3. At light loads, 25 pct of full rated, no DPM reductions were measured. Based on these results, the additive is recommended for use in diesel fuel, at a concentration of 0.09 wt pct, to power underground mining equipment as long as certain conditions are met: that a beneficial DPM reduction is verified, that the minimum required quantity of additive is used, and that potential adverse effects such as increased nitrogen oxides are checked.

The failure of the immediate roof or "roof skin" between installed primary and secundary roof supports causes hundreds of injuries and, on average one or two fatalities each year in U.S. underground coal mines. Conventional roof supports cannot cover enough roof area to adequately control these relatively small, but very dangerous rock falls. The 2006 Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) accident database lists a total of 542 ground fall injuries, including 10 fatalities. An analysis of the database suggests that 434 of the injuries and three of the fatali­ties can be attributed to roof skin falls (See Figure 2). The key to controlling falls of the immediate roof or roof skin is maximizing the area of roof coverage ilnd confining these relatively small loose rocks. Roof screen offers maximum coverage of the immediate roof. Depending on the size and configuration of the screen panels, coverage of up to 100% of the roof area is possi­ble. Screen also offers a first line of defense for machine operators working in the face area by confining or deflecting small rocks that can come loose during mining or roof bolt installation. Figure 1 shows an example of the protection screen provides dur­ing bolt installation. Although the benefits of screen are well-known, mining com­panies in some areas of the U.S., mainly Northern Appalachia and the Illinois basin, are not convinced that roof screen is the best tool for dealing with roof skin control issues. The logistics of material handling, possible ergonomic injuries to workers, and the costs associated with installation are delaying the acceptance of screen as an on-cycle roof support tool. Other mines however, have concluded that installing roof screen can be cost-effective when compared to the cost of lost time accidents, training of replacement workers, or returning to already developed entries for the cleaning and rebolting process.

An investigation was made to devise and evaluate a flexible flotation method for beneficiating typical tactite types of calcareous scheelite - bearing ores ; these scheelite - bearing ores are available in large tonnages in deposits containing 0.2 to 0.3 pct tungsten trioxide . The objective was to achieve a high recovery of the tungsten in concentrates , containing a minimum of 10 pct WO3 , that would be suitable for chemical processing into high- quality synthetic scheelite . The principal problems encountered and resolved by bench- scale flotation tests on ore samples from five different deposits were to define the conditions and reagent combinations essential for ( 1 ) achieving selective flotation of a small amount of scheelite from a large amount of calcite and ( 2 ) controlling the effect of small amounts of calcium , magnesium , and iron salts in the ores and water used . The flotation process was evolved from batch tests and continuous runs in a pilot - scale mill with a capacity of 100 lb per hour . The flotation process comprised ( 1 ) removal of sulfide minerals , ( 2 ) conditioning the residual ore pulp with sodium carbonate , quebracho , and trisodium phosphate , and ( 3 ) rougher flotation and single - stage cleaning of a scheelite concentrate . In a pilot plant run , over 91 pct of the tungsten was recovered from ore containing 0.27 pct WO3 , in a concentrate containing 11.2 pct WO3 .

On January 1, 1960 there were 310 petroleum refineries in the United States, with a crude-oil capacity of 9,901,424 barrels daily, according to the Bureau of Mines' annual survey. Compared with a year ago, this represents a net decrease of three in the number of refineries and an increase of 81,578, barrels per day in crude-oil throughput capacity. Continuing the trend to fewer units with greater individual throughput, the capacity of the average refinery in the United states increased during 1959 from 31,373 barrels per day to 31,740 barrels per day. Compared with the previous year, total crude-oil capacity of refineries on January 1, 1960 was lower in the Appalachian No. 1, Other Rocky Mountain, and Texas Gulf refinery districts. All other districts showed slight increases in capacity. At the beginning of 1960 the industry had under construction facilities that would increase the crude-oil capacity in the United States by 70,947 barrels per day. This was the smallest capacity increase under construction at the beginning of the year since 19460 Included in this construction of additional capacity were two new refineries, one in Michigan and another in Hawaii. In addition, the industry was constructing facilities to replace 50,250 barrels per day of existing crude-oil capacity.

Improved practice resulting from recent changes in the method of supplying compressed air and in pneumatic drilling equipment used in secondary drilling and in development work at the Morenci mine of the Phelps Dodge Corp., has resulted in improved safety conditions, as well as in a reduced cost per foot of drilling. A large stationary compressor installed outside the mining area and the compressed-air pipelines in the mine were replaced by portable compressor units. A self-propelled, self-contained drilling unit was obtained for drilling large footages where short moves were involved. Large wagon-drill units were replaced by faster and lighter drill machines and conventional bits by carbide insert bits. The safe practices employed in air drilling and in the related blasting and scaling operations have contributed to an excellent safety record at this mine. The complete sets of instructions listed in the company codes of safe practice aid materially in training employees.

This report documents the status of a laser-based underground guidance system for tracking and controlling the movements of underground mobile mining equipment. This research is part of a multiple project effort at the U.S. Bureau of Mines to increase mine safety and efficiency by developing technology for computer-assisted mining. Guidance systems, which can track and control the movements of underground mining equipment, are essential during computer-assisted mining operations. A continuous mining machine at the Bureau's surface test facility served as the test-bed for initial development and experimentation of this guidance system. Subsequently, a continuous mining machine in an underground mine served as the platform for in-mine experimentation. The first section of this report includes details of the laser sensors, communication network, and computer hardware. The next section includes experimental results, which show the system capable of accurately tracking and controlling the tram maneuvers of a continuous miner underground. The final section discusses conclusions and recommendations.

Computing average grade and tonnage either for an entire ore deposit or for individual blocks of ore is a continuing problem in mining. As part of a research program, investigating application of statistical techniques to mine sampling, Bureau of Mines engineers at the Denver Mining Research Center have made extensive use of an electronic digital computer for developing mine sampling theory, simulation of ore deposits, and analysis of mine sample and assay data. This report is one of a series describing use of the digital computer for rapid solution of computing problems in the mining industry.3 4 Development of a computer program to compute ore reserves by the commonly used triangular method was necessary so that results could be made available for analysis within hours.

The United States has not begun commercial operations to tap its largest poten-tial sources of oil supply - oil shale and coal. The reason is that domestic petrol-eum has been plentiful in the past and liquid products probably could be produced from it at the lowest cost. In view of the ever-increasing need for petroleum in the United States, the critical international situation threatening foreign supplies, the growing demands for steel, and the heavy costs to industry of constantly discovering and developing new oil fields, it is believed that the prompt development of a synthetic fuel industry based on oil shale and coal is not only requisite to safeguard our oil supply but is an economically sound course for the foreseeable future, To neglect its development is to close our eyes and minds to our own resources at a time when they are needed critically. It also is apparent now that neither the Government nor industry would be taking any considerable economic risk in starting the initial plants, especially as measured against their potential value in meeting critical oil and chemical demands and in building a new industry in the West.

"The inhalation of silica has been shown to produce a dramatic inflammatory and toxic response within the lungs of humans and laboratory animals. A variety of cellular and biochemical parameters are used to assess the silica-induced lung injury. The purpose of this paper is to introduce the use of luminok:Jependent chemiluminescence as a new method to study inflammation in both phagocytic cells and lung tissue recovered from silicaexposed animals. Chemiluminescence, or the emission of light, accompanies the release of reactive forms of oxygen when phagocytic cells are challenged. In this study, male Fischer 344 rats were intratracheally instilled with either silica (10 mg/100 g bw) or saline vehicle. One day after the instillations. a marked increase in the chemiluminescence was observed in the lung tissue and bronchoalveolar lavage cells recovered from the silica- treated animals when compared with the saline controls. The light reaction was markedly decreased by either superoxide dismutase or N-nitro-Larginine methyl ester hydrochloride. Superoxide dismutase is involved in the enzymatic breakdown of superoxide anion. while N-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester hydrocholoride, a nitric oxide synthase inhibitor, prevents the formation of nitric oxide. When superoxide anion and nitric oxide react. they form the highly oxidizing substance peroxynitrite. This study then implicates peroxynitrite as an agent that may be responsible for some of the oxidant lung injury that is associated with silica exposure. The use of luminol-dependent chemiluminescence may prove valuable as a method to measure the earliest events in the inflammatory process. and may be an adjunct in studying the mechanisms that produce inflammation. - Environ Health Perspect 102(Suppl 10):37-42 (1994) IntroductionResearch on inflammation has not produced a method that links the initial events of the process to the controlling events. Rather, a variety of parameters are measured that are the result of and not the basis of the inflammatory reaction. Parameters such as tissue weight, edema, blood flow, enzyme and protein release, or production of metabolites (prostaglandins, leukotrienes) have been used extensively. A method is needed that could be applied to cells of a particular type, groups of cells of different types, and even tissue, in an attempt to study the kinetics of the inflammation as well as being sensitive enough to monitor the early events of the process . Since inflammation is so complicated, the relationship between the control of the initial events and the oxidation process has never been explained nor studied in any derail."

Heavy equipment manufacturers have made a long-term commitment to minimize operator vibration exposure for comfort, performance, and health reasons. Domestic and international guidelines/standards and EC laws dictate exposure limits based on measurement of vibration at the interface between the seat and the operator’s buttocks using seat-pad accelerometry.1-4 This is historically based on the assumption that the only major source of vibration is transmitted through the seat pan. However, vibration may also be imparted to the head and neck via the steering wheel and/or arm-rest controls and a relatively rigid upper body.5 Unfortunately, little is known regarding the influence of arm position on head and neck motion. The purpose of this study was to investigate relative head and trunk motions during riding simulations of large construction equipment, using three different arm control options. Methods Five typical heavy equipment ride files were “played back” through a man-rated Servo Test 6-degree-of-freedom vibration system. An 8-camera Vicon motion capture system operating at 200 frames per second, recorded the motion of reflective surface markers on 5th, 50th, and 95th percentile right-handed male subjects, using 3 seat and control configurations (steering wheel (SW), floor mounted armrest controls (FM), seat-mounted armrest controls (SM)). Two trials were performed for each ride and seat control combination (each trial: 60 sec of 6-dof and 60 sec of vertical vibration). The relative motions (change in distances) from the marker over the xiphoid process (caudal end of sternum) to markers over each shoulder, each mid-clavicle, the presternal notch, and to each of four markers on a tight band around the head were calculated (12,001 frames, 6-dof motion only). As a rigid body control, distances between markers on the head band were also monitored. The standard deviation (SD) of the 12,001 distances between pairs of markers was normalized by the mean (L) of the associated distances producing: SD/L which was used as a measure of motion. Error assessments were also performed by analyzing the motion between relatively fixed markers (on the headband). A repeated measures analysis of variance was used to evaluate the results. While five ride files were used, only one ride file containing significant lateral acceleration components was analyzed for comparing the effects of two armrest controls versus use of a steering wheel for this part of our study. Results Values of SD/L between the points on the relatively rigid head band were consistently small and similar to each other for all conditions with one exception due to treatment (SM v SW, p=0.0145). SD/L between the markers over the xiphoid process and the presternal notch, another region that should be relatively rigid, were also similar to each other for all conditions. Use of floor-mounted, arm rest controls versus a steering wheel produced a significant increase in the value of SD/L between the xiphoid process and: the right shoulder marker (92%, p=0.0316), the right mid-clavicle marker (47%, p=0.0478), and the right-front marker on the head band (28%, p=0.0182). To cool hot working environments in deep mines more efficiently, while substantially reducing the maintenance required by presently used cooling coil heat exchangers. Approach A mine's chilled water supply cools fresh air enroute to hot working areas, in an improved, direct-mixing heat exchanger. How It Works Warm, fresh ventilation air traveling through the mine's ventilation tubing enters the lower portion of the cooler heat exchanger through a large round opening designed to accept the ventilation duct. This air flow is turned upward and evenly distributed by egg-crate lattice and pair guide vans at the bottom of the cooler. On the diagram, warm air enters at the bottom left. As the air moves upward through the cooler, it passes through a plastic or wire mesh pad which is arranged so that it offers the most resistance to upward airflow immediately above the cooler inlet: this more or less equalizes the upward air flow along the length of the cooler. The air next moves through the cold water sprays, and then through a wire-mesh demister pad before exiting from the cooler at the top right. Cooling of the air is accomplished in several stages. As the incoming air passes through the lower plastic or wire mesh pad, it is exposed to water flowing downward through the pad to the water sump. This is water that has fallen from the sprays or dripped from the upper wire-mesh mist eliminator. This water is slightly warmer than the spray water since it has already done some cooling,

A family of modified-sulfur cements has been developed by the Bureau of Mines for the preparation of construction materials with improved properties. Various types of sulfur cements were prepared by reacting sulfur with mixtures of dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) and oligomers of cyclopentadiene (CPD). Durable cements were prepared with structural characteristics ranging from rigid to flexible. These cements were used to prepare corrosion-resistant materials for use in a wide variety of industrial applications where resistance to acidic and salt conditions is needed. These materials were prepared as rigid concretes, flexible pavings, spray coatings, and grouts. Production of modified-sulfur cements in a commercial-size plant was demonstrated.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report discusses the status of a laser-based guidance system to provide position and heading feedback and closed-loop control of tramming maneuvers for a continuous mining machine. The system has been developed and tested at the Bureau, and is now being prepared for underground experiments. The system hardware includes laser scanners, a sensor communication network, and host computer hardware. The system software includes a position and heading computation module and a tram control module. The description of the software includes discussions of laser data acquisition, error compensation methods, position and heading determination, safety checking for continuous miner tramming, and closed-loop tram control. The accuracy of the laser scanner's data, the reliability of the lasers in a dusty environment, and the system's accuracy on tracking the position and heading of the continuous mining machine are shown in the results of experiments performed at the Bureau. Conclusions are stated based on these experimental results, and further work to improve the system performance and prepare for underground testing is discussed.
