A new crude ilmenite beneficiation process was recently proposed that allowed for the preparation of a smelter grade ilmenite from ilmenite with elevated chromium content. Magnetising roasting was not utilised in the process. As part of this circuit an ilmenite low susceptible reject stream was produced that had a low magnetic susceptibility. In this article a magnetising roasting process was investigated to beneficiate this material. Tests were conducted on material produced by pilot scale simulations on a typical South African East Coast heavy mineral reserve. The results obtained were compared to those published in literature for crude ilmenite. The small-scale experiments were used to define approximate operational limits for the oxidising roasting of a low susceptible ilmenite low susceptible reject stream, although industrial roasting conditions may differ significantly from those obtained in laboratory units. In a next phase these results will be confirmed on pilot plant scale.

In planning and operating mining projects, managers must take into account economic conditions in foreign markets in addition to Australian conditions. As the manager has little influence over the price or the demand for the product, it is particularly important that close attention is paid to the control of costs to ensure that the mining operation remains competitive with foreign producers. This is not necessarily true for some sectors of the domestic manufacturing industry where foreign competition is restricted and costs can be passed on to consumers because of the protection afforded by tariffs. The effects of protection on the cost structure of Australian industry are more pervasive than is commonly understood. The issue of protection is particularly important to the Australian mining industry management because the cost burdens imposed by local protection must be absorbed within profit margins. Furthermore, because protected industries are effectively subsidised to use scarce resources such as skilled labour, the development of more efficient industries such as mining is inhibited. The mining industry has much to gain from any relaxation in protection policy, and hence the issue is of considerable importance to all managers in the mining industry concerned with costs.

The allocation of boggers and trucks at Telfer’s sublevel cave mine is currently assigned by manual techniques, with decision-making primarily dependant on the judgement of the operators and mine control. Field observations indicate that allocation decisions could be improved by establishing a systematic approach to dispatch. An investigation into the current state of technology determined that no currently available solution would provide a tool to make optimal decisions for the Telfer dispatch challenge.In an underground sublevel cave (SLC) environment, the destination decision is fixed and the source is variable, so open pit and block cave solutions are not relevant. Newcrest underwent a development venture with an external vendor to develop a novel production dispatch algorithm and user-friendly software program to make allocation decisions in a systematic way with consideration given for the true complexity of the operation.This new production software, nicknamed Dingo (for Dispatch ‘n’ Go), is a smart way to assist forepersons and mine control operators in their day-to-day roles of planning shifts and allocating trucks and loaders to optimal locations during shifts.CITATION:S Graskoski, 2017. Analysis of different environmental scenarios and to represent, spatially, of impacted areas is possible by the use of geoprocessing techniques, specifically Systems of Geographical Information (SIG). Through these systems it is possible to create dynamic mathematical models, constituting of a georeferenced digital database and employing the integrated data originated from several sources. In this context, the general goal of this paper is to apply this tool in an environmental analysis of a specific karstic area impacted by mining activities. In order to preserve a limestone site, internationally recognised by its archaeological features, including caverns, lakes and evidences of prehistoric ages, the Brazilian government has created the Lagoa Santa Environment Protection Area. This place is located in the proximity of the Belo Horizonte international airport. In the past two decades exploitations of dimension stones have increased in this area. These exploitations have been done without a mine plan promoting several environmental impacts. The objective of this paper is to analyse these activities using SIG as a basic tool to locate the main mining related impacts and propose mitigation measures including waste and tailings disposal and reshaping of the landscape and introducing a drainage system for the considered zone.

Prior to 1986, users of satellite based remotely sensed data were almost exclusively reliant on the United States Landsat series of satellites to monitor our Earth's resources. This situation changed when France, Belgium and Sweden launched SPOT-1 in 1986. The year of 1988 saw the Japanese also enter into the earth resource satellite business. The Japanese launched an earth resource monitoring satellite with an emphasis on marine resources, hence the name MOS-1 (Marine Observation Satellite). Many more remote sensing instruments are planned for launch by these nations and others in the next 10 years.

In order for the Australian underground coal mining industry to achieve the high productivity rates demanded of it without compromising its good safety record, improved geotechnical monitoring systems are required. One of the main problem areas affecting underground coal mining is the deterioration of previously stable roadways.CSIRO Division of Geomechanics has been working on a NERDDC funded project to develop an instrument to monitor coal mine roof deformation. The instrument which has been developed, Roof Alert, is a self contained, battery powered, intrinsically safe device. It can monitor the magnitude and rate of deformation and give multiple, variable visual alarm signals where preset levels ate exceeded.

Landform evolution models (LEMs) can assess the effectiveness of landform designs applied to a rehabilitated landform by predicting where erosion may occur. Here, we compare erosion predictions produced by the CAESAR-Lisflood LEM with field observations from the rehabilitated Pit 1 landform of the Ranger uranium mine, based in the Northern Territory, Australia (Figure 1). The ability to predict long-term erosion at a catchment scale is important, as the final rehabilitated Ranger landform is required to physically isolate buried tailings material for at least 10 000 years. CAESAR-Lisflood has been extensively tested and calibrated using data collected from erosion plots (0.09 ha) on the Ranger trial landform (TLF) for multiple years (Lowry et al, 2020; Saynor, Lowry and Boyden, 2019). However, until recently, it was impossible to compare model predictions with field observations for areas larger than the TLF erosion plots. We can now compare model predictions of Life of Mine Conference 2023 | Brisbane, Australia | 2–4 August 2023 116 gully development with field observations from the newly rehabilitated, 40 ha surface of Pit 1 over two contiguous one-year periods: 2020–2021 and 2021–2022. The aim of this study was to assess whether the CAESAR-Lisflood model can successfully predict gully erosion at a larger spatial scale.

Tasker (1985) has detailed the accepted practices for constructing polygonal blocks of influerrce in the estimation of ore reserves. Further he suggests that users might fall into traps such as omission or overlap when determining the area of influence for each sample point.As an example of these types of errors Tasker (1985) describes under "Coverage ofthe Area" how 25 per cent of the exploration area will not be included in an equiangular triangular grid where hexagonal blocks of influence are used.The introductory suggestion of Tasker (1985) of "incorrect procedure" by Rudenno (1983) (and Armstrong (1983)) reiterated around the Figure 2a of Tasker (1985), is based on the brief description of the polygonal area of influence by Rudenno (1983). That description is not too different from that given by King, McMahon and Bujtor (1982).

The current trend in the UK towards the adoption of retreat longwall mining methods and the associated rapid development of the access drivages have exacerbated the environmental conditions experienced within these workings. There is a recognised need to improve the efficiency of the design and operation of mine ventilation systems in order to maintain an adequate environment and climate within these workings. Any improvement achieved in the quality, quantity and control of the delivered ventilation will assist in the provision of improved gas and dust dilution and climatic control. The paper presents an analysis of the psychrometric data recorded during the execution of a series of comprehensive climatic surveys conducted within two representative deep underground UK coal workings. The surveys were performed across two high production retreat longwall districts within UK Coal Ltd collieries. The surveys employed intrinsically safe psychrometric transducers and digital data-loggers to collect a continuous record of the mine climate over designated weekday production and weekend non-production periods. The transducers and data-logging units are capable of simultaneously measuring and digitally recording changes in the dry bulb temperature and the relative humidity at regular time intervals for extended periods of time.

Legacy tailings storage facilities exist within operating mine sites across Australia. These tailings storage facilities are often viewed as rehabilitation liabilities but with considered assessment may prove to be a resource. Extraction of such a resource might add value to operations by providing cash flow during the development of new mines; providing supplementary mill feed for existing mines undergoing step changes in operations; and supporting mine closure activities. Hellyer Gold Mines is successfully extracting and reprocessing sub-aqueous material from legacy tailings storage facilities at their Hellyer operation in north-west Tasmania. The Hellyer tailings storage facilities contain poly-metallic material from the Hellyer and Fossey underground deposits dating back to the 1980s as well as material from tailings reprocessing activities by other operators of the Hellyer site. Hellyer Gold Mines is reclaiming sub-aqueous material using cutter-suction dredgers and reprocessing on-site. Hellyer is the only operation of its type in Australia and few such operations exist worldwide. Key learnings around the estimation of a resource for legacy tailings storage facilities have been acquired at Hellyer that can be applied to the assessment of other tailings storage facilities. The application of dredging as a mining method at Hellyer is delivered through collaboration with experts from outside the mining industry under the direction of a mining engineer. Key elements required for the planning and delivery of safe and efficient dredging inside tailings storage facilities have been identified at Hellyer and are presented to provide a road map to the development of other dredging operations.

Significant value can be added to ore supplied from the mine to the mill by measuring its quality in real time and performing grade control additional to that within the mine. Responsibility for ore quality between the mine and mill stockpiles is not always clear due to operational siloes so geologists and mining engineers need to be involved collaboratively with metallurgists to optimise ore value prior to processing. Sensors, such as the GEOSCAN-M which utilises high specification Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis (PGNAA), that measure conveyed ore flow representatively (continuous and fully penetrative) and in real time have been used in the minerals sector since 2003 and have been successfully applied in multiple commodities. Quality can be measured within the mine where material is conveyed underground or in-pit. Bulk ore sorting is used to divert increments of waste from the ore stream to upgrade material sent to the crushed ore stockpile (COS) as well as to create run-of-mine (ROM) stockpiles of different qualities to maximise blending opportunities and accommodate processing priorities, eg blending out deleterious content. The real time composition measurement can be combined with moisture and fragmentation analysis data for improved ore type characterisation, to control ore blending, for feedback to the mining schedule and block model reconciliation, and feed forward control for grinding and processing operations. The paper discusses various parameters measured and derived in existing operations that are used to maximise coarse waste rejection and metal recovery, optimise plant feed quality consistency, and reduce consumables; power, grinding media, water, reagents, and minimise fine tailings generation. Innovative geometallurgy applications are also discussed.

ERM Consultants Pty Ltd was established in 1980 for the purpose of introducing a disciplined coal technology and power station planning service, to support Australia's efforts in establishing a major export steaming coal industry. At that time, major coal exploration programs were mounted on more than 50 potential export coal deposits with proven open-cut reserves to export 200 Mt/a of coal. The fact that Australia achieved an export trade of only 30 Mt/a, equivalent to the energy requirements for a population of around 5 million people, illustrates the very small achievement to date. The main reasons for this small export steaming coal growth have been: 1. Failure to convince potential overseas coal buyers of the benefits of coal-fired power generation, and the ability of proper power station design to overcome environmental problems, and achieve reliable operation and long life when burning Australian coals. 2. Failure to promote Australian power engineers to advise on the use of Australian coals, resulting in Northern Hemisphere power station experience dominating in market countries. 3. Failure of governments to draw on privately practising Australian power engineers and coal technologists in technical workshops, presentations and assistance to overseas countries, to ensure that personnel whose business it was to serve the follow-on needs of countries were readily available. The result of these failures has been that: 1. Only a fraction of prospective overseas coal-fired power projects have proceeded. 2. Australia has had no influence in the design of overseas power stations to ensure that potential customers would be confident that Australian coals could be reliably burnt in their boilers.

The Argyle deposit in the Kimberley region of Western Australia was the world’s largest accumulation of natural diamonds. Following its discovery in 1979, the mining of associated alluvial diamonds commenced in 1983, followed by the pipe in late 1985. Over the life of the mine to its closure in November 2020, Argyle produced approximately 900 million carats of diamonds. Argyle diamonds are distinctive in having a predominance of brown colours and rare highly-prized pink diamonds, which are a signature of the deposit. The 3D geological model developed from mining and deep drilling shows that Argyle is a composite pipe formed by the coalescence of several steep-sided diatremes, each with their own feeder zones at depth, that were erupted along a NNE-trending fault. The ~1.2 Ga Argyle pipe is comprised of diamondiferous olivine lamproite volcaniclastic rocks and intruded by sparse olivine lamproite dykes. The volcaniclastic rocks are predominantly comprised of unconsolidated quartz-rich lapilli and coarse ash deposits formed by numerous phreatomagmatic eruptions of olivine lamproite magma through Mesoproterozoic water-rich sands and silts. Post-emplacement deformation has tilted the orebody 30° to the north and regional strike-slip faulting has offset, segmented, and elongated the orebody. Recent significant modifications of the geological model resulted from underground block cave operations, producing several critical lessons learnt. Diamond grade and quality reconciliation issues warranted a geological investigation which resulted in the recognition of new volcaniclastic olivine lamproite domains with a broad range of diamond grades, including some very high-grade units. The new lamproite domains had a significant effect on the block cave mining and resultant recovery of diamonds. The new findings enable a more coherent and detailed geological understanding of the volcanic emplacement and paragenetic sequence of the Argyle AK1 pipe. Structural modelling of the deposit also played a major role in the block cave mining tonnage recoveries and daily operations. The re-examination of the geology of the Argyle pipe and the results of this new information reinforces the need for ongoing robust geological work both in the early stages of mining a deposit and continued during the life of the mine.

White phosphorus (P4) is a critical element in industry, but its current production from phosphate rock using the carbothermal reduction method raises significant environmental and health concerns. This pressing issue necessitates the development of new technologies that facilitate the sustainable production of P4. In response, my team is actively developing an innovative, coke-free approach for white phosphorus production. This method involves the dissolution of phosphate rock in molten CaCl2, followed by the extraction of P4 through electrochemistry at relatively low temperatures. Moreover, this approach has the potential to utilise phosphate-bearing solid wastes as raw materials, further enhancing its environmental benefits. By employing this cutting-edge technique, we aim to revolutionise the phosphorus chemical industry towards greener and more sustainable practices. This paper provides evidence of the feasibility and effectiveness of our proposed approach.

This paper outlines the contributing factors to a series of erroneous Mineral Resource estimates which led to considerable loss, including significant reduction of mine life and consequently a large write-down of asset value. The error prompted divestment of the mineral asset in the short-term by the owners, a major mining company. There were multiple and complex contributions to the result: • The mine was undergoing a transition in the deposit geology with increasing depth that was not accommodated in the models. Early indications of the geological transition in initial drilling were generally unrecognised in resource modelling. The shortcomings of the models became apparent with increasing infill drilling and subsequent production reconciliation. • There was a lack of recognition of, and confidence in, site-based input and skills by corporate technical management. The site had a reputation internally for over-delivery to plan early in its life and that supported the anticipation of ongoing metal delivery into the mine plan by management. • A corporate lack of confidence in site being able to adequately domain the mineralisation led to the use of a CIK domaining process, rather than one which was geologically based. This domaining process led to gross over-statement of mineralisation trends reflected in the subsequent OK estimate. • Timelines on the outsourced estimation process were so short that validation was not possible. Obvious errors in the estimate versus data were not able to be used to correct the issues and the site’s Competent Person sign-off occurred without adequate checks. This case study is presented to reinforce the concept that Mineral Resource estimates are not solely based on the ability of the Competent Person to satisfactorily guide the process. There are usually multiple complex issues in the estimation process which need to be recognised and considered in judging reconciliations of model to actual.

The QSL continuous lead smelting process incorporates two basically different pyro- metallurgical operations: roast-reaction, smelting of galena concentrate, followed by carbothermic reduction of some by-product lead oxide slag. Both steps are performed simultaneously in separate compartments of a long horizontal cylindrical reactor, which is lined with fused chrome-magnesite bricks. This converter-type reactor contains a liquid bath consisting of a shallow layer of lead bullion with a superimposed layer of slag, the lead content of which is gradually reduced from about 50% to discardible levels. Metal relative to slag, and slag relative to the gas phase are in continuous countercurrent motion. A lead well is arranged at the flue end of the reactor, and an overflow tap for slag at the opposite end. Tonnage oxygen for oxidation and smelting of the charge, and sub- stoichiometric mixtures of pulverized coal and oxygen for reduction and heating of the slag, are directly blown into the bath using fluid-protected Savard-Lee injectors. High gas-liquid momentum transfer ensures intensive local mixing, and enables rapid mass and heat transfer.

Mine planning processes are continuously evolving, increasing in complexity, and are required to be developed in shorter timeframes, often missing important steps in the process. Underground coal mines are also moving into more challenging environments, with the more favourable resources having been exhausted. In addition to traditional mine planning processes there is an increasing level of complexities associated with parallel systems including the preparation of Joint Ore Reserves Committee (JORC) compliant estimates (JORC, 2012 and Guidelines Review Committee, 2014) or seeking critical regulatory development consent to undertake mining. There is a clear link between geotechnical considerations and success of mining operations, and therefore it is essential that such considerations are elevated in both status and priority. It is obvious that geotechnical considerations are paramount in any mine, however it is imperative to accept that such considerations, and the collection of information relating to such, are undertaken from the onset of any mining project. Progress on this project will be verbally reported and a description given of the main features. A detailed feasibility study was completed in December 1986, and the Joint Venture has issued an Environmental Impact Statement. This was open for public comment until 16 February. Issues presently being considered include economic justification traffic, air quality, noise, marine fauna and flora, visual impact, heritage and construction impact. Detail design and construction is likely to commence in mid 1987, following determination of the above matters.

There are many small to medium carbonate hosted complex zinc containing deposits where the zinc is not economically recoverable either as concentrate or metal. High grade (>20% Zn) run of mine ore can be processed but even this material gives relatively poor returns. Considerable effort has gone into developing new technology for either upgrading the ore and/or recovering zinc metal hydrometallurgically but there has been limited success. Minetometal has developed a process capable of economically treating these deposits to give marketable lead and zinc products. Its object is to describe the surface geology and the tin lodes, and to relate the lodes to the structure of the field.PREVIOUS REFERENCESR L. Jack made his first report on the field in 1880, but his principal report was made in 1883. W. E. Cameron described the Great Northern lodes in 1904. Numerous later reports on various mines were made by L. C. Ball, J. H. Reid and C. C. Morton, the most important of which were on the Black King, Good Friday, St. Patrick and the Great Northern Gully Shaft.GENERAL GEOLOGYJensen maps the Herberton area as part of a granite massif intruding rocks of two ages, the Younger Metamorphics of Silurian-Devonian age, and the Older Metamorphics of Older Palaeozoic age. The distinction is apparently based on lithological data. The Older Metamorphic rocks occur as inliers in the granite massif to the west and east of Herberton (Fig. 1).The area described consists of granite traversed by numerous dykes. West of the area, approaching the Older Metamorphic rocks, the granite becomes finer grained as if chilled towards its contact, and the dykes more numerous. To the east, passing from the Nova Scotia mine to Mount Lavery there are numerous dyke rocks, but the outcrops are poor and knowledge of the geology indefinite. The area is the main tin-producing area. To the west there are comparatively small tin lodes in the granite, and the "Copper Firing Line" occurs in the Older Metamorphic...
