AT the beginning of 1944 it was expected that the production of metallic zinc in the United States from domestic and foreign concentrates would exceed the 1943 figure though domestic production of concentrates was expected to drop below the 1943 rate, mostly in the Tri-State area. Imports of concentrates were estimated to more than take care of such deficiency. North American concentrate production, available for import to the United States or elsewhere during the year, was estimated at over 200,000 tons recoverable zinc content; South American at about 65,000 tons; Australian at about 50,000 tons. Production of both concentrates and metal in the United States, however, did drop, attributable in considerable part to man-power shortage in the industry. However production exceeded consumption, which fell off, and stocks of metal increased. These stocks have increased since the middle of 1942 but production and consumption are coming nearer to a balance. The A, B, and C premiums, which have played an important part in keeping up domestic production of concentrates, extend only to the middle of 1945 by present legislation. Reduction of silicon from blast-furnace-type slags by carbon-saturated iron is a very slow reaction even under conditions of rapid stirring. Equilibrium under atmospheric pressure of carbon monoxide was approached from both sides, and the silica-silicon relation was established at temperatures of 1425º to 1700°C for slags containing up to 20 pct Al2O3. Silicon carbide is formed by reaction of graphite with high silica slags and the conditions for its formation were determined. Activities of SiO2 and of CaO in their binary solutions at 1600°C were determined. The effects on the activity of SiO2 were established for additions of 10 to 20 pct AI2O3 and of 10 pct MgO. STUDIES of chemical reactions between blast-*>-5 furnace slags and metal have been focussed on the transfer of sulphur from metal to slag. The important role which silica reduction plays in this process' has led to a study of the transfer of silicon from slag to metal and the equilibrium represented by the equation SiO2 (in slag) + 2C (graphite) = Si + 2CO (g). [I.] The authors2 have published an account of the experimental method employed in attacking this problem and of three series of experimental results at 1600°C. This paper contains data on some additional compositions and extends the observations to cover the temperature range 1425° to 1700°C. The data are used to determine the activity of silica in the slags. As in the earlier experiments, the atmosphere was carbon monoxide which flowed through the furnace at 150 ml per min. In certain heats designated in the tables and figures, the gas was bubbled through the melt using a graphite tube. The latter increased in porosity during a run and in some cases bubbling ceased as indicated by cessation of surging. Some results were discarded for this reason. Experimental Results The new data are shown in Tables I through V and both old and new data are plotted in Figs. 1

PONCA CITY proved an ideal selection as a place of meeting for the Petroleum Division this fall. The accommodations at the Conoco Club were just what was required for such a gathering; the committee having the arrangements in charge functioned with the efficiency of veterans and the enthusiasm of neophytes; and the members and guests followed the speakers with close attention, entered the subsequent discussions with gusto, and divulged the "low-down" at private conferences. No one minded the drizzling rain on the first day, which only served to keep up the attendance in the auditorium; the weather then cleared up in time for a group picture before the gathering went their separate ways.

AMERICANS like engines, but more than anything they like powerful engines, and next to that they want them quiet, silent, smooth; perhaps a slight purr might be permitted, but they must not knock. To provide a gasoline to fit all these requirements, American petroleum technologists have experimented for years, and mounting octane numbers of the gasolines the refiners have produced both before and during the war bear witness to their success. The question on everyone's mind now is what may we expect in the way of engine fuel in the postwar period? The gasoline drouth during the war rationing, the inconvenience of doing without a car were major annoyances to all motorists, but they put up with them pretty cheerfully for the most part. However, now that the war is over, and the jalopies are all out and the better cars have been taken off the jacks and brought out on the road, the call is for "Some of that good gas-fill her up, if you please."

THE second session on geophysical prospecting at the February meeting of the Institute was a discussion of the mining law and the bearing of the new method of search on location of claims and assessment work thereon. Allen H. Rogers was chairman of the meeting, which he opened by reviewing the present law and the proposed changes. W. R. Ingalls commented (by letter) on the Arentz bill, as introduced into the House of Representatives in 1921 and the need for revision of the present mining law. L. W. Douglas explained (by letter) the bill that he introduced and which has been passed by the House. SAMUEL S. ARENTZ, Nevada: It is my opinion that if the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers is to sell this proposition to the people in the West, they have to sell it to the lawyers, because, after all, they are heard loudly when it comes to speaking in Congress. One man tells the other, "This thing is a vicious piece of legislation"; it might not be, but they will pass it on if it affects them. If the Institute would impress on the people affected that we need a re-codification of the mining law and that such is necessary along certain lines; that things have changed during the past decade or two, so today instead of doing our prospecting alone through the sinking of a shaft, through a discovery that may be seen, we are now moving on to more modern means of discovery through geophysics, through the churn-drill, through geology, through geological inference, I think we could get somewhere.

MECHANIZATION in coal mining is a phrase which has attracted world-wide attention, and those persons not engaged on the practical side of coal-mine operations seem to regard mechanization as a panacea for many difficulties of the industry. The term "mechanization" as now employed by experienced mining men is restricted to mean mechanical loading of coal at the face. In a broader sense mechanization in coal mining was begun nearly half a century ago with the introduction of compressed-air undercutting machines and locomotives and, later, of electrically operated locomotives, undercutting and shearing machines, and drills. The use of coal-cutting machines, which has increased until now about three- fourths of the bituminous coal produced is being mechanically cut, first displaced hand-picking except in a few long-wall mines, and later gradually displaced the dangerous and coal-smashing method of blasting-off- the-solid.

Measurements of the 103 yield stress of ordered and disordered poly crystalline Cu ,Au were related to the ordered antiphase domain size determined by resistivity measurements. For undeformed material, a yield stress maximum wa obtained at a critical domain diameter of about 40A. Plastic deformation resulted in a marked increase in the yield stress and electrical resistivity of the ordered alloy compared to the disordered, the strain hardening rate increasing regularly with initial antiphase domain size. Order hardening was accompanied by a sharp reduction in size of the initially large domains. It has been observed that the yield stress of ordered and partially ordered Cu3Au alloy varies sensitively with antiphase domain size aid degree of order.ly2 In addition, ordering of the lattice leads to a marked increase in the strain hardening rate (order hardening) as compared to the rate for the disordered alloy. In the present investigation, changes in the electrical resistivity and yield stress of ordered polycrystalline Cudu with varying initial domain diameters were measured after tensile plastic deformation in order to examine the effect of cold work on the antiphase domain size. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Au-Cu alloy of 99.99 pct purity analyzing 50.85 wt pct Au-balance copper was obtained from the Handy-Harmon Co., N. Y., in the form of 0.061 in. diam drawn wire. Wire specimens 3 in. in length were given the following annealing treatment in nitrogen: 500" for 72 hr, 820" for 15 hr, and 450" for 5 hr, followed by a water quench. The annealing sequence resulted in a completely disordered structure with a grain size of about 0.2 mm. The disordered specimens were then reannealed at 360' in nitrogen for periods varying from 10 min to 150 hr followed by quenching to produce ordered structures with varying domain sizes. The degree of ordering and variation of domain size was followed by electrical resistivity measurements made at room temperature using a low resistance precision Kelvin double bridge apparatus. The specimen resistance was determined over a length of 4.0 cm between two brass knife-edge contacts while the specimen was immersed in an oil bath to minimize temperature variations. In addition, the current flow in the circuit was minimized by a current pulse technique in balancing the bridge in order to avoid heating the specimen. Using a sensitive galvanometer to detect the bridge null, the accuracy of the resistance measurement Wire specimens were plastically strained in tension with an Instron tensile unit at strain rates in the range 5 x 10"5 sec-' to 2 x 10"4 sec-'. Stress and extension data were fed into the Instron chart drive amplifier to obtain the actual stress-elongation curve from which the yield stress at 10"3 strain was determined. The maximum resolution of the apparatus was approximately 50 psi stress and 3 x 104 strain. At various plastic strain levels, deformation was interrupted and the electrical resistivity determined after removing the stress. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION 1) Yield Strength of Ordered Cudu. In order to determine the effect of the ordered antiphase domains on the initial yield stress, specimens were prepared with varying domain sizes ranging from zero for 5 completely disordered structure to about lo5A for a completely ordered structure by suitable annealing treatment. Domain sizes were estimated by comparing room temperature electrical resistivity data with the original data of Jones and sykes3 as modified by rdle.' In agreement with previous work, the resistivity varied sensitively with domain diameter and degree of order, decreasing from approximately 11.6 x l0- ohm-cm for the disordered structure to about 5.9 x l0- ohm-cm for ordered domains above 10"3 cm in diameter. A numerical method for computing the dynamical behavior of fluid- fluid interfaces is described. Results of studies made to assess the accuracy and economy of the method on a computer are reported. It is concluded that it is practical to obtain digital computer solutions for fluid- fluid interface problems with two space dimensions. PROBLEM DEFINITION We consider two-dimensional flow in a rectangle as shown in Fig. 1, where a fluid-fluid interface divides the rectangle into two regions. The pressure is specified along the lower boundary (the injection boundary) and upper boundary (the withdrawal boundary). There is to be no flow of fluid across the side boundaries, which are walls of symmetry for the flow, and px = 0 along these boundaries. The fluids are incompressible, the absolute permeability and porosity is constant, and each fluid has its own constant mobility. Thus, the pressure satisfies Laplace's equation in each region. Across the interface, pressure is continuous and the normal component of fluid flux is 1. These conditions are shown in Fig. 1. The velocity of a point on the interface in the direction of the normal from Fluid 1 into Fluid 2 is U,/ Q, where Un is the normal component of volumetric flux at the point on the interface, i.e., For brevity, we call the problem defined above "Problem A". Problem A is a simple example of a dynamical fluid-fluid interface problem. However, the same numerical methods which we use to solve Problem A can be extended to the solution of a large number of fluid-fluid interface problems which are mathematical models for various oil recovery processes,l hence our interest in Problem A. We define the interface by prescribing the x, y coordinates of a finite set of points. These points are called "interface mesh points" and are illustrated by triangles or asterisks in the figures. Fig. 2 is a procedural (flow) chart displaying the main steps in the solution. We comment briefly on some of these steps in this section and then give further details in subsequent sections. Understanding of the diffusion problem has recently been furthered by the analysis of Birchenall and Meh1.l They pursued the problem of the variation of the diffusion coefficient with composition for non-ideal solid solutions. Their analysis follows the tradition of Wagner,l Jost, Dehlinger, and Darken & who assumed the net flux of diffusing material to be proportional to the gradient of a quantity related to free energy. The basic assumption in Birchenall and Mehl's formulation of the problem is that the net flux of diffusing material is proportional to a thermodynamic activity gradient. To estimate the applicability of the derived relations, they corrected the diffusion coefficients of carbon in austenite by utilizing Smith's6 activity data for carbon, and the diffusion coefficients for zinc in copper with activity data computed from the vapor pressure measurements of Har-greaves.' The corrected coefficients for carbon were virtually independent of carbon concentration. For the diffusion of zinc in copper a moderate variation of diffusion coefficient with concentration remained after the correction. The problem of diffusion can be formulated in another way than that used by Birchenall and Mehl. The method is that of chemical rate theory and has been used by Eyring and his coworkers8,9 as well as by Eyring and Zwolinskilo in a discussion to Birchenall and Mehl's paper. As yet the method has not been applied to substitu-tional solid solutions. On the basis of their assumptions, Eyring and Zwolinski derived a relation between the diffusion coefficient and activity that is identical with that of Dehlinger and Darken but which does not correct for the variation of the diffusion coefficient with concentration as well as does the relation derived by Birchenall and Mehl. It was thought that the theory of diffusion would be more complete if the inconsistency between the two analyses could be rationalized and if diffusion in substitu-tional alloys were analyzed on the basis of the concepts of the chemical rate theory. Although preventive maintenance is not a new concept and has many proven applications, it is believed that the Pittsburgh & Conneaut Dock Co.'s Computerized Preventive Maintenance System is the first and possibly the only application related to heavy duty bulk material handling equipment. This paper is presented to describe the development, installation, and application of a Computerized Preventive Maintenance System applied to an 18 million t (20 million st) coal and iron storage and reclaim facility located on the shores of Lake Erie at Conneaut, Ohio.

Long range expansion plans begun in 1966 by The International Nickel Co. of Canada, producer of over 50% of the free world supply of the white metal, are so mammoth as to give rise to the speculation that something might have to burst at the seams. From an annual level of capital expenditure of $35 to $70 million, the company jumped in 1967 to $145 million in new capital investment and will come close to $200 million in 1968. Inco expects to spend $700 million in the next five years, beginning in 1968, for new mines and surface facilities in Canada. The program involves the opening of nine new mines within the next 3 1/2 years, expansion of producing mines, and construction of new plants and modernization and expansion of established ones to process the increased ore production. Beyond this, the company is committed deeply in developing new sources of nickel abroad. Any one of these new projects, if proven economic, would necessitate expenditures of about $100 million or more. For Inco, the economic strain was relieved without a rupture this spring when Henry S. Wingate, company chairman, reported' at the stockholders annual meeting that $150 million had been raised by the sale of bonds. This marked the first time in 32 years that the company had gone into debt.

ALTHOUGH Gaudin1 and more recently Sutherland2 have calculated the probability of collision of a falling mineral particle with a rising bubble, there is no published information concerning the details of the mechanism of attachment of a collector-coated particle to a bubble. During the past year the writer has developed a theory for the mechanism of attachment, which has been substantiated experimentally.' Funds for the investigation and for some of the equipment used have been supplied by the Mines Experiment Station of the University of Minnesota. Motion picture studies of the phenomena involved in the collision between mineral particles and bubbles, such as those of Spedden and Hannan,3 show that the contact can be completed within 0.3 millisec. Formulas developed for rigid bodies have hitherto been used' for the calculation of the motion of bubble and particle, but it is obvious that a bubble cannot be regarded as a rigid body. On the contrary, Spedden and Hannan's pictures show a great degree of deformation during the collision. The time of attachment was calculated as the time the particle drifted past the bubble. Time of Collision The theory presented in this paper enables calculation of the time of collision; using the concept that the bubble, or more generally, a liquid-air interface, acts as an elastic body. The elasticity, defined as the restoring force on a mechanical deformation, is caused by, the surface tension and is the result of the principle of the minimum of free surface energy. It is well known that an elasticity together with a mass determines a frequency of vibration. The vibrations of jets and drops caused by the elasticity of the interface are known to comply exactly with the classical theory of capillarity.5 However, the vibrations of isolated bubbles, as distinct from foams, have not been investigated previously. The following equation, presented elsewhere,' has been deduced for these frequencies: [3fB = 9.20•'./V•Vn- (n-1) • (n+2) /8[1]] in which fB is the frequency of a harmonic of the bubble in cycles per second, V the volume of the bubble in cc, n a number determining the order of the harmonic, and n = 2 the basic vibration. The first (basic) harmonic describes a change of the spherical bubble to an ellipsoidal bubble. The higher harmonics are more complicated, for the circumference of the bubble is divided approximately into as many parts' as the order of the harmonic. As an example, Spedden and Hannan's published motion picture of, a vibrating bubble corresponds to the sixth harmonic. Eq 1 shows that only the first and third harmonics are simple multiples (1 and 3), all the others being irrational fractions of the basic frequency. This means that the shape of the vibration can change with time and is in general unsymmetric in respect to the time axis. Such conditions prevail when there is a distributed elasticity or mass, as in the case of vibrating membranes or rods. The constant 9.20 is valid for water at room temperature, but a general solution involving the physical constants of the liquid has not been found. The case of the floating particle is much easier to treat I than that of the bubble. It can be assumed that the elasticity is caused exclusively by the interface and that the mass is concentrated in the particle together with some adhering water. The following expression for the frequency of a system, of one degree of freedom can be applied: [1E/m[2] fP = 27] Here f, is the frequency of the particle vibration in cycles per second, E the elasticity in dynes per cm, and m the mass in grams. The classical theory of impact phenomena gives the time of collision during the striking of a spring (in this case the surface of the bubble) by a mass, as: [t~ = 2/f = 7r\/m/E[3]] It is now possible to develop an expression for the elasticity of a floating cylindrical particle. MILITARY power stems from industrial power and industrial power in turn depends predominantly upon an ample and assured supply of mineral raw materials. It thus becomes the duty of mineral economists to collate the vast array of data and logical deductions in order to reach an unemotional judgment as to the ability of the Soviet economy to withstand the strain of prolonged military action on the modern scale. Russian publications, reports: and official speeches have been laboriously screened and analyzed. Since these are the sources of information for the lower echelons of the Soviet industrial organization itself, they carry factual data that can be pieced together to show the present-day pattern. Apparent contradictions and obvious distortions or omissions can often be rationalized on the basis of observations made by foreign engineers and consultants during the 1930'5 and by checking against the technical literature published before even so-called technical articles were riddled by bombastic and presumptuous claims.
