The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, investigated recovery of concentrates containing tin, tantalum, and niobium from the Kougarok deposit on the Seward Peninsula, AK. To date, 25 million lb of tin has been delineated in occurrences containing 0.36 to 1.32 pct Sn, and the resource potential is estimated to be as high as 25 million short tons at average grades of 0.75 pct Sn, 0.025 pct Ta, and 0,025 pct Nb. Deslimed ore was concentrated to 54 pct Sn, 0.3 pct Ta, and 0.3 pct Nb, with recoveries of 74 pct Sn and 44 pct Ta/Nb using a Humphrey's* spiral followed by a Deister shaking table. Tin values in the slimes were upgraded to a 5-pct-Sn concentrate using a Bartles-Mozley separator followed by flotation. The 5- pct-Sn was further upgraded by fuming to give a concentrate containing approximately 60 pct Sn. The recovery of the two products combined was 80 pct Sn and 46 pct Ta/Nb, A flowsheet with mill-design parameters resulted from the metallurgical testing. An economic analysis was made based on the proposed process.

Mexicana de Cananea, S.A de C.V. is a major copper producer mining a large deposit of the disseminated porphyry type considered one of the largest copper resources of the world with 2.7 billion tons of 0.60% copper for the mill plus 4.1 billion tons of averaging 0.26% copper for leaching. Mining of low grade sulfide leach ore, has been an important part of the overall production of the open pit mine which started in 1944. Before this time all the mining in Cananea was by underground methods. The leaching process in Cananea began on the 1920's with in situ operations in the underground mine and small dumps up to the 1950's. Large scale leaching operations began in 1960 and the copper solutions produced were treated in precipitation plants until 1,980 when the first SX/EW Plant was put in operation in Cananea. Leaching action is essentially ferric-bacterial, with no fiesh acid added to the leaching solutions. Traditionally, 5540% copper extraction is recovered fiom ROM, 70- 120 meter high leach dumps in 80 months of leaching. Cananea has successfully improved copper recoveries by implementing several actions that include: 1. Stripping of old dumps. 2. Leaching of old dumps through slotted casing. 3. Crushing conveying leach ore to minus 8 inch and stacking it in 30 meter lifts. As result of these actions, copper recovery has been increased' to about 70% of total copper with actions 1 and 2 and up to 85% in half the time by crushing-conveying the leach ore, based on the same solubility index of the run-of-mine ore. This paper describes the above actions that were implemented to enhance the leaching recoveries from. sulfide leach dumps and the economics of such actions.

Thallium is a very minor element found in lead ores. It's behaviour during lead smelting has recently become of much greater interest due to the effects it had on the health of waste heat boiler maintenance contractors at a Canadian smelter. In this paper the behaviour of thallium in both traditional and direct lead smelting processes will be examined using computational thermodynamics techniques. Yazawa and his coworkers have made extensive use of computational thermodynamics to examine and illustrate pyrometallurgical processes. It has been shown that thallium behaviour during smelting is strongly influenced by the extent of oxidation of the lead concentrate and by the presence or absence of chlorine in the charge. The condensation behaviour of thallium species in the waste gas handling system was also modelled and it has been confirmed thallium-rich deposits can form at the high temperatures prevailing in waste heat boilers.

Spectral reflectance data for 335 minerals, including 228 minimum-maximum combinations for anisotropic minerals giving a total of 563 data sets, have been collected from the literature and combined into a single database. Quantitative color values for x, y, Y, Ad , and Pe referred to ICI standard i11uminant C have been calculated from the spectral reflectance data and are included in the database. The programs plot spectral reflectance curves together with all quantitative color data for each mineral in the database. The plots and data can be directed to a dot-matrix printer such that a databook of quantitative color and spectral reflectance having one mineral per page can be generated for the ore microscopy laboratory. In addition, by sorting the database and grouping the minerals, groups or individual minerals can be plotted on the chromaticity diagram, and this plot can also be sent to a dot-matrix printer. The programs are written in compiled BASICA for an IBM-PC with graphics capabilities and at least 128KB random access memory (RAM). The databases are accessible either through the BASIC programs or through any commercial database system capable of loading and writing to an ASCII format sequential file. The programs and database are available by sending a blank diskette and self addressed, stamped envelope to the authors.

In an effort to develop a novel flash ironmaking process, the chemistry of selected slags was investigated. In different ironmaking processes, the molten bath (iron-slag bath) is expected to be in contact with gas atmospheres of H2/H2O, CO/CO2/H2/H2O, and CO/CO2. The latter was investigated to allow comparison with the blast-furnace conditions. The slag composition was selected to resemble that of the blast furnace with CaO/SiO2 in the range 0.8 to 1.4. The temperature range was 1550 to 1650°C. The oxygen partial pressure was maintained in the range 10-10 to10-9 atm. The effect of water vapor on the chemistry of the slag as well as the equilibrium reactions involving the slag has been studied for the first time. H2O dramatically affects the chemistry of the slag and strongly affect the phase equilibria in the slag as well as the equilibrium distribution of elements between slag and molten metal.

A proposed alternative to the conventional zinc extraction processes is the flash reduction of zinc calcines. As part of an overall study of this process, the kinetics of single zinc oxide pellets were investigated. Pellets, compacted from Outokumpu zinc calcine (60.9% zinc, 9.6% iron), were suspended in a flow of CO/CO, mixtures and reduced at temperatures between 1000 and 1200°C and atmospheric pressure. The pellet weight loss with time was recorded and analyzed. It was found that the reduction of calcine pellets (0.9 cm height and 1.36 cm diameter) was controlled by chemical reaction. This paper includes an analysis of the experimental results of two previous investigations of ZnO reduction.

After the Krupp-Renn process was shown to be unsuitable for treatment of the Greek nickeliferous laterites, the LM process was developed. It involved roasting reduction up to metallic iron in a Rotary Kiln (R/K) and smelting in an Electric Furnace (E/F). Ferronickel (with 15% Ni) produced in the E/F, was upgraded to 90-95% Ni in an 02 converter. Raw Ni was then electrolyzed to pure Ni. The LM process was not applied for very long however, due to various problems. So, the Larco process was developed, i.e., pre-reduction in R/Ks, smelting of the calcine in E/Fs for ferronickel production (15% Ni) and enrichment to 20% Ni, in an O2 converter. Until now, many technological improvements have been invented and applied or adjusted to the process, which have made it a fully reliable and competitive one. sohe of the improvements were the invention and application of a new granulation process for liquid ferronickel, the modification of the existing R/Ks, E/Fs and converters and the design of new ones, and others that are described in the paper. Some attempts were made to recover and remove of uranium that may be present in refining effluents, mine waste Water, and other waste sources by using microbial biomass. To establish which microorganisms accumulate the most uranium, 135 species of microorganisms (42 bacteria, 26 yeasts, 34 fungi and 33 actinomycetes) were screened. Of these 135 species of microorganisms tested, extremely high uranium absorbing ability was found in Pseudomonas stuzeri, Neurospora sitophila, Streptomyces albus and Streptomvces viridochromogenes. In addition to the research on uranium uptake, thorium recovery by using microorganisms was investigated. High abilities were found in Streptomyces levoris and Bacillus subtilis. The selective accumulation of heavy metal ions by various microorganisms has also been examined. Uranyl, mercury and lead ions were readily accumulated by almost all of the species of microorganisms tested. Actinomycetes and fungi differ from many bacteria and most yeasts in their selective accumulation of uranium, and mercury. The basic features of uranium uptake by Streptomyces viridochromogenes, a microorganisms with high uranium-uptake ability, were investigated systematically. Synthesizing these results, we suggested that the accumulation of uranium into these microbial cells is not directly mediated by any metabolic process:, but almost completely dependent upon physicochemical adsorption on the cell components. In addition to this fundamental research, uranium recovery was investigated in immobilized Streptomyces viridochromogenes. These immobilized cells adsorbed, uranium readily and selectively. The immobilized cells recovered uranium almost quantitatively and almost all uranium adsorbed was desorbed with 0.1 N Na2CO3, These results showed that microbial cells are more stable after Immobilization and can be used repeatedly for the process of uranium adsorption-desorption. These results suggested that these microbial cells can be used for the recovery and removal of nuclear fuel elements, such as uranium and thorium, from refining effluents and mine waste water.

"This study investigated calcination behavior of one of the Turkish laterite deposits, which was recently found in Sivrihisar region. Representative limonitic laterite samples (1.26% Ni) taken from Yunusemre Karasivritepe and Kucuksivritepe location were first subjected to drying. Removal of chemically bound water and other volatiles were then studied, in detail. In the calcination experiments, temperature and time were the main experimental variables. Thermal treatment was conducted at the specific temperatures in 250 °C - 800 °C range. The weight losses due to elimination of chemically bound water and other volatiles were reported to be approximately 10 per cent of the weight of the ore. For the particle size used in the current work, 700 °C and 40 minutes were determined to be the optimum calcination temperature and time, respectively.IntroductionThe nickel ores that are economically valuable can be grouped into two categories: sulphide type nickel ores and oxide type nickel ores, namely laterites. Over all reserves in the world, 40% are sulphide nickel ores and the remaining 60% are laterites [1]. Pyrometallurgical nickel extraction from sulphide type nickel ores is conducted via matte smelting. More recently, laterite ore bodies have been subjected to nickel extraction. Depending mainly on the chemical composition of the laterite and the process economics, various extraction techniques have been implemented: pyrometallurgical route involves ferronickel smelting. High pressure acid leaching (HPAL) is the commercial method for hydrometallurgical nickel extraction, while ammonia leaching (CARON Process) is a combination of pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical processes [2]. With the improvements in these processes, it is predicted that laterite’s share in the world nickel production will rise to 50% in 2012, while it was reported to be 42% in 1,200,000 tons of annual production in 2003 [3]."

Natural and technogenic sources of rare earth elements (REE) and other rare and scattered metals are remarkable for their chemical diversity. The pregnant solutions going to processing for the valuable metals have very complex compositions. Both targeted elements and competing impurities are present in the solutions in different chemical forms. Thus processing of such materials demands application of different technological tools addressing numerous specific tasks on the way to the final product. Screening work was undertaken to identify the best resins among developmental and commercial products addressing typical cases in the hydrometallurgy of scandium and REE. The cases outline typical sources of scandium and REE, such as streams of TiO2 production, extracted phosphoric acid, barren uranium solutions and others. Specially designed ion exchange resins can be effective tools.

"The use of self-propagating combustion reactions to synthesize metallic, ceramic, and composite materials is described. The limitation of this process because of the porous nature of its products is discussed. The formation of dense bodies through the simultaneous application of pressure is shown for a metal-matrix composite. The effect of an external electric field on the synthesis of ceramic and composites is described. The nature of the effect of the field on the mechanism of synthesis is analyzed theoretically and experimentally. The use of the self-propagating combustion to synthesize intermetallic thin films is presented for the Ni-Al and Ti-Al cases. The formation of functionally gradient materials (FGM) by centrifugally-assisted self-propagating high-temperature synthesis is described.IntroductionThe use of self-propagating combustion reactions for the synthesis of a large number of simple and complex materials has been described in numerous publications. These have been amply discussed in several review articles [1-4]. The many benefits of this method of materials synthesis are commonly examined in light of its most significant limitation: the porous nature of its products. The porosity in the products of self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) is an intrinsic characteristic of the process and its elimination has been the focus of numerous attempts. Various experimental methods have been used to accomplish this goal."

The stags from the Teniente Converter (TC) have high copper and magnetite contents. The reduction and copper impoverishment of these slags in an electric furnace was simulated in the laboratory, as part of a conceptual study for the Ventanas smelter of ENAMI. The effect of power input, electrode immersion, temperature of the slag, coke and solid revert additions on the rate of magnetite reduction and copper recovery was investigated. It was found that the addition of solid reverts, containing copper matte, enhanced the recovery of copper. Magnetite stratification and a corresponding gradient of the copper content occurred in the slag. Microscopic examination of slag samples showed the presence of copper in the form of matte and metallic copper inclusions. The results of the experimental work combined with an analysis of the phenomena that take place in an electric furnace led to a better understanding of the slag cleaning mechanism. The successful start-up of the slag cleaning electric furnace at the Ventanas smelter resulted in good copper recovery and confirmed the beneficial effect of solid reverts addition. Electrode consumption is lower than anticipated. No bottom build-up problems have been experienced. Keywords: copper, slag, magnetite.

Detailed mineralogical and metallurgical investigations were carried out on a phosphorous-bearing manganese carbonate ore from the Huayuan manganese mine, Hunan, China. Microprobe analyses indicate that the Manganese occurs mainly in calc-rhodochrosite and in rhodochrosite. The cOll'pOsitional range of these manganese carbonate minerals is 50 -80 % MnOJ3, 0 -35 % CaOJ3, 5-35 % MgC03 and 0 -15 F~. The manganese carbonate minerals are very fine grained, IOOSt are between 4.6 and 9.4 1m in diameter. The small grains are clustered into aggregates that form bands 0.5 to 10 rnn wide. The phosphorous-bearing mineral in the ore is fluorapatite and is in grains that are generally smaller than 6 1m in diameter. Metallurgical tests show that it is possible to concentrate the aggregates of manganese carbonate minerals by high intensity magnetic separation, and to reduce the phosphorous content by rpasting the concentrate to convert the manganese carl::x>nates to insoluble hausmannite, and then leaching the roast product with HCI to dissolve the fluorapatite.

"The separation of nickel from the aluminum present in spent catalysts and different metallic industrial residues, is proposed in the following systems: alloy Al2Ni and the mixtures 50 wt% Ni + 50 wt% Al, 10 wt% Ni + 90 wt% Al2O3 and 12 wt% NiO + 88 wt% Al2O3. The experiments were carried out in a tubular reactor with a flow of 2 l/h of gaseous chlorine and from 200 ° to 800 °C. The final products of the reaction, extracted from the hottest zones of the reactor where characterized by XRD, SEM, EDS, AA and XRF, as NiCl2 y NiCl2.6H2O while in the coldest regions AlCl3 was deposited in the first two cases and in the other there was a residue of ?, a- Al2O3, sometimes mixed with some remainder of Ni and NiO. The procedure attained different separation factors which showed the optimun conditions for the recovery of both metals. Introduction Some studies of nickel corrosion were carried out in chlorine gas at temperatures above 950ºC, and suggested that nickel is not corroded below 538ºC. [1] However, in a previous work it was shown that the chlorination allows the separation of nickel from aluminum and the formation of NiCl2 was detected from 200ºC in binary mixtures Ni-Al 50 wt%, for isothermal conditions in chlorine flux. [2] Other researchers obtained selective chlorination above 650ºC of a fly ash containing 1.4 wt% of Ni and other metals (V, Mg, Al and Fe). The Ni was separated from the Mg and NiCl2 started to vaporize at 550ºC and was after condensed in a zone of the reactor above 380ºC with 90% of purity. [3]"

The bainitic Fe-C-Si alloys with optimum content of retained austenite serve as ?containers? for storing of hydrogen. Both the vacancies of fcc lattice and the possibility of forming hydrides of silicon and other alloying elements will be used. The idea is based on our scientific hypothesis. There is the silicon threshold (Si=0,50%) in "Fe-Si" system and Fe-C bainitic alloys, above which it causes self-organized phenomena: sudden increase of hydrogen solubility and amount of retained austenite in the alloy after ??ß transformation, formation of two supersaturated solid solutions <a??r>, "rejuvenation? and its reverse process. Rapprochement of iron atoms when Si=0,50%, causes appearance of new covalent forces where uncompensated electrons of 3d-subshell are involved and it provokes synergetic phenomena. They ?free? silicon atoms from the previous bonds. After that silicon itself becomes a getter of hydrogen using vacancies (14) of 3P2(6)d0(10) subshell and it results in sudden increase of hydrogen solubility in metal. Simultaneously sudden decrease of iron activity takes place. That in its turn ?releases? the carbon. Thus, its redistribution, controlling the bainitic transformation, is hastened. It stipulates for creation of ?brittle bainite" B[a(C,H)+?r(C,H)] after ??ß transformation. While weathering of metal, "rejuvenating", hydrogen diffuses in ?islets? of retained austenite and ?relaxed bainite? (B[(C)+?r(C,H+H)]) is obtained. When heating austenite ?(C,H) is obtained, and after cooling ?brittle bainite? is obtained, etc. Presented scientific hypothesis explains the available experimental facts ("rejuvenation? and its reverse process, graphitization, weldability, forming of flakes, reaching high strength, etc.) in a new manner, as well as, gives real opportunity for creating of new trends in many fields, e.g. iron based HAA. Provisional data having been obtained are encouraging.

"Natural fibers obtained from plants have increasingly been used as reinforcement of polymeric composites in engineering applications. This is the case of the fiber extracted from the piassava palm tree, a native of the southeast region of South America, which for a long time has been used in simple items like brooms and brushes. Recently it was reported that the tensile strength of the piassava fiber varied inversely with the equivalent diameter. Following that previous work, the elastic modulus and the density dependence on the diameter of stiffer piassava fibers of the Attalea fiinifera species was investigated. Precise measurements with a profile projector and Weibull analysis of the experimental results indicated that both the elastic modulus and the density of piassava fibers also follow an inverse correlation with the diameter. Scanning electron microscopy observations of the microstructure and fracture surface showed that defects and participation of microfibrils are responsible for this correlation.IntroductionIn the past decades, both the increase in the price of the petroleum and climate changes due to greenhouse gas emissions are motivating the use of renewable and low cost natural materials as a substitute for energy intensive and CO2 contributor synthetic materials [1]. A typical case is that of natural cellulose-based fibers extracted from cultivated plants in comparison to glass fibers, which are extensively used for composite reinforcement. In fact, these natural lignocellulosic fibers are increasingly being investigated [2-6] as possible reinforcements of polymeric composites, and in some cases, successfully replacing glass fiber composites in engineering applications [7]. The automobile industry has remarkable examples of lignocellulosic fiber composite substitutions [8-10]. Not only do some of these fibers display specific mechanical properties comparable to glass fibers but their composites also contribute to lower equipment wear and better finishing of molded components [6]."

"Brickless reaction shaft is the latest progress for flash smelting furnace. However, there are many factors influence the melting point of the freeze slag inside brickless reaction shaft, and their variational regularities are not obvious, thus, it is difficult for conventional methods to analyze accurately the complex data. In this research, the experiment data of slag melting point were processed based on optimal discrimination plane. For this method, two orthogonal vectors were firstly built up based on the Fisher's criterion, and then the experiment data were projected onto the two vectors, thus, two-dimensional feature vectors were extracted as criteria to determine the factors effect degree on the slag melting point. Results show that the CaO content is the greatest factor to the melting point of the freeze slag inside brickless reaction shaft, the content of Fe3O4, SiO2, Cu2 O and MgO is the second, and the FeO content is the last.IntroductionBrickless reaction shaft is the latest progress of flash smelting furnace reaction shaft. To research the influence factors on the slag melting point inside the brickless reaction shaft is significant to form freeze slag with compact structure, good heat insulation, certain intensity, appropriate thickness and reasonable distribution, to extend furnace life, to reduce energy consumption, and to promote safe production.However, due to the complex components, there are many factors influence the melting points of the freeze slag inside brickless reaction shaft, and their variational regularities are not obvious. Therefore, it is difficult for conventional methods, such as variance analysis, data fitting, etc., to analyze accurately the complex experiment data.Pattern recognition can easily classify information, even if there are many influencing factors. For pattern recognition, there are some sub-disciplines such as discriminant analysis, feature extraction, error estimation, cluster analysis (together sometimes called statistical pattern recognition), grammatical inference, parsing and matching (sometimes called syntactical and structural pattern recognition) [1, 2]."

The close proximity of cobalt and nickel on the Periodic Table and their frequent occurrence together in nature means that their separation in primary hydrometallurgical flowsheets is not only often necessary, but requires the use of innovative chemistry to achieve high selectivity. Today, increasingly stringent demands for the high-purity cobalt and nickel salts required for battery applications in consumer electronics, electric vehicles, and solar applications are again challenging the state of the art. The evolution of cobalt–nickel separations is traced from the basic precipitation technologies employed in 1960s, through commissioning of the first cobalt solvent-extraction plant in South Africa in 1974, to the commercialisation of organophosphinic-acid extractants (which provided a step-change improvement in selectivity) and their eventual widespread use in the 1980s and ’90s. This was followed later by their sulphur analogue, which enabled different possibilities for laterite processing in the new millennium. Separations in chloride media, which take advantage of the different speciation chemistries, and nickel extraction by oximes in ammoniacal systems are also discussed. More recently, chelating and solvent-impregnated resins have added further dimensions to the possibilities for flowsheet design and enabled higher purity products to be attained from both primary and secondary sources. Selected case studies and flowsheets are described.

"The search for technological innovations in the Civil Construction takes as an objective the reduction of costs and increase of the productivity. However, these technologies demand analysis and studies of parameters of control that provide the quality of the products. With the intention of improve the knowledge on industrialized mortars used in mechanized projection machines, a characterization was done in the state anidro, fresh and hardening of three mortars, being each one of a State, Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and Bahia. The tenors of water/ mortar was obtained through tests done in built environment, it varied from 0,17 to 0,26. From these results, the mortars were projected by his respective consistency, analyzing its compressive strength, and traction adherence resistance, in this way, the good performance of the revetments was provided.IntroductionThe market competitiveness of Construction has led companies to invest in construction processes and techniques in order to rationalize and optimize the buildings.
