In-mine Continuous Wave (CH) Radio Imaging method (RIM) instrumentation has the capability of measuring EM wave propagation constants in layered formations. The RIM method is based upon the fact that seams of coal, trona, potash, quartzite, gilsonite and oil bearing sands form natural waveguides for low loss transmission of electromagnetic (EM) waves. The waveguide forms whenever the seam is bounded by more conducting claystone, mudstone, shale or in the case of oil/gas traps, by a floor of saline water. Disturbances caused by faults, shear zones, paleochannels, sills and dikes significantly alter the propagation constant. The analytical values of the EM wave propagation constants depend on the physical and electrical parameters of the seam. The values are presented in this paper in a graphical form to assist in the interpretation of RIM tomographic images. This paper compares in-mine geologic mapping obtained during mining to tomographic images of the geologic disturbance zones in a Central Utah coal mine.

A major problem in future discoveries of base metals is their "explorability". By this I mean an exploration program must be designed that assures accurate assessment of the potential for ore, but is within reasonable budgetary constraints. As we are compelled to depend more and more on non-outcropping prospects, "blind" deposits, and as drilling costs multiply, the costs of exploration increase significantly. Solutions to the problem of defining exploration targets are influenced by our conceptions of the origin and recognition o f conditions that localize ore. The maxim that "elephants should be sought in elephant country" presumes we can recognize elephant country. This paper presents a suggested origin for some mineral deposits, and their controls; particularly those termed ?Mississippi Valley type". Tennessee is used as an example of the ideas offered. Mining districts designated "Mississippi Valley type" are, and have long been, the principal sources of barite, fluorite, lead and zinc ores in the United States and elsewhere throughout the world. A large volume of literature is available describing this class of ore deposits, explaining their habitat, and invoking genetic models for them. The quality of this literature is notably uneven, some of it demonstrably erroneous, and much of it is restricted to detailed descriptions of one aspect of the problem, or to detailed descriptions of one aspect of the problem, or to a single mine, or even a single stope. Good morning, it is truly an honor to have been invited to speak before you today Before I begin my update on MSHA's activities, I?d Like t o quickly say a few words about the American mining congress and its mission in Washington, AMC is a national trade association representing most of the producers of the nation's metals, nonmetals and coal, we also represent the manufacturers of mining equipment and supplies and the financial and consulting institutions which service the mining industry. It is the diversity of our representation which gives us our greatest strength in our petitioning efforts, the administration and the members of congress know that an AMC position is the result of the careful consideration of a vastly diverse group of mining concerns. Our president, Al Overton, perhaps has the best description of AMC when he speaks of us as "the mining industry's eyes and ears and its collective voice in Washington."

In the course of the grinding experiments conducted at Climax over the past twenty years one interesting phenomenon was discovered. This was that balls made of certain types of steel grind more ore than some others. The most significant variation was found in the results secured with a hard alloyed forged bail compared with the forged carbon ball supplied by most ball manufacturers These findings were confirmed in many repeated controlled tests. The value of these tests depends on the methods used, the facilities available and the care with which the investigations were conducted. These are described in the following. This testing has largely been done in eight 91 x 81 low discharge ball mills in closed circuit with 7811 duplex screw classifiers. The mills run at 20 RPM on a feed approximately minus 3/8 inch. The ore is ground through 28 - 35 mesh in one stage. Each mill and auxiliary classifier is in a separate, parallel grinding and flotation section The, ore to each: section is the same in every particular and is fed to each mill bin from a common conveyor tripper. The ore from the bin to the ball mill is weighed on a conveyor scale. The power input to each mill motor is determined with a watt hour meter which measures the power to the mill motor only. Both the scales and meters are checked periodically by standard methods and have been found to give consistent readings. Automatic samplers are employed on each section to obtain accurate measurement of the size reduction. A size analysis of the classifier overflow is made each shift and a composite size analysis is obtained from a weighted average of the various shift analyses. The mills are driven by 450 horsepower synchronous motors so that there is no speed variation and shell liner age is kept as nearly the same as possible in mills under test. The same set of operators is assigned to a mill under test as to the control mill. In all other particulars such as ball load, mill density, liner design, etc., the mills are operated in precisely the same manner. This is an ideal arrangement for plant testing. From observations of ball mill performance over the past twenty years, it is the opinion of the operating staff that variations of as little as one to two percent in mill capacities may be determined if sufficient operating hours are devoted, to a test. Relations between mill capacities, fineness of grinds and power consumptions have been established with a high degree of accuracy. In Table I are given the figures for one test. These show that while the grind with the hard ball was slightly coarser, the tons ground per hour was 5.4 percent greater with the soft ball, and 6.1 percent greater on the basis of minus 100 mesh produced. The power consumed per ton with the hard ball was 4.4 percent greater on a tons per hour basis. The soft ball was inferior in wearing qualities and steel consumption per ton of ore was 24 percent greater with it. In this test the mills were charged with the two different balls for a period of three months to allow the ball loads to come to equilibrium. In Table II are given the specifications of the two balls. The difference in grinding rates may be accounted for by the nature of the ball surfaces. The surfaces of the soft balls after being worn a while are rougher to the touch. Enlarged photographs of the worn-in surfaces of hard and soft balls are shown in Figure I. These show the presence of scratches or skid marks on the hard ball surface which indicates less nipping effect. The Climax ore pulp has a pH of 6.0 and is in a dispersed state. The viscosity is low compared with most ores especially those that are conditioned with lime. This would lower the tendency of the pulp to adhere to the balls with a lower grinding efficiency as a result. It was also thought that the relative rates of wear from surface to center might affect the make-up of an equilibrium ball charge. This probably has little effect on capacity as shown by the size analyses of the two ball charges in Table III. This hypothesis was subsequently investigated by the use of rationed charges. By introducing the hydrochemical damage variable of coal gangue granular material, this paper analyzed the evolution law of gangue mechanical parameters with hydrochemical damage. By constructing a gangue damage model considering multifield coupling, the damage mechanism of gangue under multi-field coupling was revealed from the microscopical aspect, and the influence law of gangue damage mechanism on the dissolution of toxic substances under multi-field coupling was obtained: the conditions of Test 1 have the greatest influence on the porosity of coal gangue, and the damage of coal gangue is the greatest. Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb are more easily leached under acidic conditions. The coupling effect of seepage, temperature, and chemical field can promote the formation of secondary voids, change the voids, and form migration paths in coal gangue. The kinetic model of toxic leaching of coal gangue under multi-field coupling can be well characterized by Elovich equation. The release mechanism of heavy metals is mainly manifested as delayed diffusion or dissolution in the early stage, diffusion and dissolution in the middle stage, and depletion in the late stage.

High angle conveyor (HAC®) systems in open pit mining offer many advantages over the traditional, truck only, haulage systems, including: (1) superior energy efficiency, (2) less dependency on petroleum products, (3) less sensitivity to inflation, (4) less labor, (5) less excavation for the amount of ore recovered, and (6) less ramp construction and maintenance costs. Previous studies had revealed the technical and economic feasibility of high angle conveyors. This paper presents the Sandwich Belt HAC® as the vital link to optimization of in-pit conveying systems. HAC development to date is discussed, beginning with studies in 1979, to the first large scale prototype in 1983, to the first commercial unit in 1984, into "the latest commercial installations. Discussion continues with the HAC systems to suit the various open pit mining operations and the corresponding characteristics of the system components, particularly the high angle conveyor. The range of HAC systems from the low capacity (up to 1,814 t/h), low lift (10.7 to 36.6M), highly mobile to the moderate capacity (1,814 to 3,629 t/h), moderate lift (36.6 to 76.2M), intermittently mobile to the high capacity (greater than 3,629 t/h), high lift (greater than 76.2M), semi-mobile, are discussed along with some possible combinations of these.

Since the 1974 introduction of catalytic converters to automobiles in the United States, more than 150,000 kg (5,000,000 oz) of platinum, palladium, and rhodium have been used in the converters. An estimated 8 to 10 million converters are being used annually in the United States, each containing from $5 to $15 of PGM metals. In addition, use of converters is beginning in Europe which will significantly increase the quantity of PGM used. Two basic types of catalysts for converters are being used: pellet and monolithic. The pellets are small, discrete spheres or cylinders of gamma-alumina coated with platinum group metals, Figure 1. The monolithic are honeycombs of a cordierite, A13(Mg,Fe)2Si5AlO18, base coated with gamma-alumina and subsequently with platinum group metals, Figure 2. Pellet catalysts are being used by General Motors and American Motors; whereas Ford and Chrysler are using monolithic catalysts. The table below compares the PGM content and value of the catalysts.

The University of Alabama Mineral Resources Institute (MRI) has developed a unique process for selective fatty acid flotation of carbonate gangue from sedimentary apatites (francolite) in the pH range of 4-6 without collector conditioning of the pulp. The process, which does not require an apatite depressant, was modified to benepciate a high- MgO siliceous phosphate matrix from south Florida. The modified process includes two flotation stages, one for car- bonate removal and the other for phosphate recovery from the siliceous gangue. The selective flotation separation of the carbonate and phosphate from siliceous constituents of the matrix at various pH levels and collector dosages are discussed. In the carbonate flotation stage, about 70% of the MgO was rejected in the froth. The phosphate flotation stage produced concentrates analyzing about 31% P2O5 0.7% ? 5 MgO, and 4% insol. This study intends to demonstrate the engineering application of ground penetrating radar (GPR) that would enable site engineers to prevent the high cost of blind drilling. At the tailing dump located in Zhairem Mining and Processing Plant, the challenge of sheet pile driving is encountered due to the indefinite watertight clay layer deposition depth that serves as a protective layer against groundwater contamination. A numerical model of the soil underlying the tailing dump is built using the existing hole data to compare and confirm the existing geological cross sections for three profile lines along the south and southeast parts of the tailing dump. GPR is employed to investigate the subsoil geological structure and detect the watertight clay layer deposition. On the basis of radargrams tied to the existing borehole data in the numerical model, 21 drill hole locations are suggested to assess and confirm the clay layer depth along profile lines at the tailing dump. The drilling results of the suggested holes confirmed the expected depth of the clay layer. It is concluded that GPR is a practical and economic subsurface mapping method that can prevent the high cost of blind digging of the ground and orient the drilling operations effectively.

Newmont Mining Corporation owns and operates the Phoenix Mine near Battle Mountain, Nevada, USA. The existing milling facility has operated since 2006. Following the startup of the milling operation, and coupled with the upswing in the copper market, Newmont realized that Phoenix needed a process option to treat lowgrade transition and oxide copper ores. This meant that potentially revenue generating ore was being mined as waste. With no system in place to treat the transition and oxide copper, work began to determine the most feasible approach. After evaluating multiple options, the flow sheet was set for a run-of-mine (ROM) heap leach pad and solvent extraction/electrowinning plant (L-SX/EW). This paper will discuss the synergies and challenges of developing a copper L-SX/EW plant at the Phoenix copper-gold mill.

"The mining industry has made great strides in making mining safer and reducing the occurrence of mine disasters. Nevertheless, sometimes miners encounter smoke while trying to escape from a mine. Underground miners use different visual cues to help them escape from a smoke-filled environment. Foremost, miners look for primary and secondary escapeways that are typically indicated with reflective markers of various colors, with at least 11 colors available from manufacturers. Federal regulations require that escapeways be marked, but they do not specify the colors to be used. Thus, no standard color code exists and some colors can be more difficult to see in a smoke-filled mine.Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) tackled this problem by taking a human-centered approach to provide miners with better visual information that would improve their ability to see escapeway markers in smoke, thus enhancing their ability to self-escape. What marker colors does your mine use?Does your mine use blue retro-reflective markers to indicate primary or secondary escapeways? Is your mine ready to purchase new or replacement retro-reflective markers? Color is important and blue had the poorest visibility as determined by OMSHR’s recent research investigating the visibility of markers in smoke. OMSHR researchers are not alone in their interest to improve a miner’s ability to escape - specifically when their efforts are hampered by smoke. For instance, there is a LinkedIn Mining Safety subgroup called "Standardized Color Code for Escape Ways and Returns in Underground Mines," and a recent National Academy of Sciences report recommended the development of humancentered technologies to enhance self-escape from underground mines. The mining industry has a common goal of helping improve miner safety, especially when it can be done by way of a simple and relatively low-cost solution of using escapeway colors that are more visible."

INTRODUCTION During the past decade, significant pro¬gress has been made in applying rock mechanics principles to mine design problems by a great number of researchers. Some of these new techniques have found their way into the engineering and planning offices of the operating mine. In spite of these advances, however, the application of rock mechanics in the day-to-day mine planning and design of our domestic coal mines is rela¬tively rare. There are a number of reasons responsi¬ble for this relatively slow progress, not the least of which is the question of how to measure the success or cost effectiveness of a sizable rock mechanics effort in an opera¬ting mine. Firstly, the properties of geologic materials generally vary over a wide range and it is, therefore, difficult to assess whether an improvement in the mining conditions is due to a design change or due to a change in the geologic conditions. A second reason for the slow acceptance of rock mechanics in engineering thinking is the fact that some of the concepts are quite difficult and that physical evidence of their validity to mine design is still rare. Thirdly, com¬munication between research, engineering and applications oriented people appears to function only intermittently. In our view, however, the most important impediment lies in the "state-of-the-art." Exactly how much can rock mechanics help the mine operator? The best that rock mechanics can do at present is determine whether one approach is better than another when weighed against some design objective (stress, strain, deformation). We cannot determine the abso¬lute best ground control design -- only what is better. If ground control is lost, the statement that "it's the best one we looked at" means very little to the harried operator. While the "state-of-the art" has advanced a great deal, it has certainly not been reduced to an engineering matter in that design hand¬books are available -- they are not. The success of a rock mechanics program, there¬fore, can be determined only over a long period of time of continuous effort.

Introduction and Historical Background Although both sluices and devices using a simple flowing film are among the oldest known methods of concentration, they are still extensively employed in a variety of situations where they are not only efficient but also have a low operating cost. More particularly, they are valuable for making a bulk concentrate of high specific gravity minerals from alluvials and beach sand and in upgrading low value ores. The antiquity of some of the basic concepts can be seen in the fact that they are found in Agricola's De Re Metallica which was published at Basic in 1546, while in 1602, Carew114 gave a fairly clear account of tin ore dressing in Cornwall in which grass turves were used to catch the cassiterite. This is perhaps one of the forerun¬ners of the blanket strake. The planilla of Mexico, the lanchute of Malaysia and the old Cornish box huddle are also descended from these early strakes. In fact, a sluice with holes in the bottom for concentrate discharge was shown by Agricola, not unlike the principle used in the plane table and the lamflo sluice. The convex huddle for the treatment of sandy material appeared about 1848 and the concave form eight to ten years later. For the treatment of "slime" sizes, wooden dead frames which were manually worked were used in Cornwall for many years but gave way to the automatic water-operated type in 1860, and even a mechanically tilted frame was described by Henderson115 in 1857. Theoretical Considerations The behavior of solid particles in suspension depends to a great extent upon the pulp density and the size of the suspended particles. In a fairly dilute suspension, such as that normally used when dealing with small particle sizes, the behavior of particles in a flowing film results from two effects. These are the lateral displacement, which is determined by the time taken for each particle to penetrate the flowing film and reach the solid surface, and the resistance offered by each particle to further displacement after it has reached this surface. The initial penetration through the flowing film depends on the size and specific gravity of the particle and the thickness and viscosity of the film. As a result the smaller particles will migrate further before their movement is retarded relative to larger particles of the same specific gravity. The behavior on reaching the solid surface de¬pends on whether there is a single particle layer or, as is more often the case, a multiple layer or thin bed of material which is sufficiently dilated, permits the penetration of higher specific gravity grains. Thrust of Flowing Films. When a thin film of liquid flows over a plane solid surface, the layer next to the surface remains at rest but the velocity of the film increases with the distance from the surface and becomes a maximum near, but not quite at, the free surface. Therefore, a particle in suspension in such a film is acted upon by a greater force near the upper part of the film than at the lower part, resulting in an overturning effect. After a particle reaches the separating surface or an accumulated densely packed bed of other particles, the liquid flow causes it to move downstream by rolling, sliding, or by a movement involving alternating suspension and deposi¬tion (saltation). In rolling and sliding, which are brought about by a substantially noneddying stream, the large submerged particles are acted upon to the greatest extent and they move more rapidly than smaller ones, notwithstanding their greater mass. When two particles of the same size but of different specific gravity are considered, the higher density one moves more slowly by reason of its greater mass. As a result the particles tend to become arranged in the manner shown in Fig. 29. If any particle is so large as to stand above the water surface, the transporting force on such a particle, although the maximum available, will have less effect than that on a submerged one. Such large grains are therefore carried a lesser distance. Fluid Velocity in a Flowing Film It can be shown that if y is the distance within the flowing film from the interface, the fluid velocity v' at this point is given by IIn this equation p' is the fluid density, g the acceleration due to gravity, a the viscosity, a the angle made by the film to the horizontal, and 0 the film thickness (in cgs units). From these expressions it can be seen that the depth of the flowing film varies as the cube root of the volume of fluid and inversely as the cube root of the sine of the plane surface inclination. Similarly the distance a particle can travel before reaching the surface is directly related to the quantity of fluid and its viscosity. The viscosity of pulp is greatly increased by the presence of near colloidal particles and consequently the penetration of the somewhat larger grains through the flowing film is retarded, resulting in them being carried further across the concentrator deck. Obviously this effect can be reduced by prior removal of some or all of the ultra¬fine particles. The detrimental effect of kaolin on the separation of fine ferrosilicon from quartz has also been demonstrated by Johnston,116 the relationship between viscosity and efficiency of separation being shown in Fig. 30. The pH value also has a very marked influence on the viscosity and the use of acid mine water, for example, can increase viscosity materially and thereby result in lower efficiency. Dilation of Multi-Particle Systems Except during washing (when a single particle layer may exist) concentration usually takes place in a bed of particles which is partially dilated or stirred by eddy currents. A worker’s personal exposure to respirable dust in occupational environments has traditionally been monitored using established methodologies which entail the collection of an 8-hour representative sample that is sent away for laboratory analysis. While these methods are very accurate, they only provide information on the average exposure during a specific time period, generally a worker’s shift. The availability of relatively inexpensive aerosol sensors can allow researchers and practitioners to generate real-time data with unprecedented spatial and temporal granularity. Low-cost dust monitors (LCDM) were developed and marketed for air pollution monitoring and are mostly being used to help communities understand their local and even hyper-local air quality. Most of these integrated sensing packages cost less than $300 per unit, in contrast to wearable or area dust monitors specifically built for mining applications which have been around for decades but still average around $5,000 each. At the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), we are leveraging the power of high-volume data collection from networks of LCDM to establish baseline respirable hazard levels and to monitor for changes on a seasonal basis as well as following any application of control technologies. We have seen the effective use and advantages of monitoring live data before, during, and after events like shift changes, operational changes, ventilation upgrades, adverse weather events, and machine maintenance. However, many factors have prevented a systematic adoption of LCDMs for exposure monitoring: concern for their analytical performance, the complexity of use, and lack of understanding of their value are some factors. This contribution outlines a one-year case study at a mine in Wisconsin USA, covering the installation, maintenance, data visualizations, and collaboration between NIOSH researchers and the industrial hygiene professionals at the mine.

The environmental and economic problem created by pyrite in coal are well documented. The removal of pyritic sulfur prior to, or during, utilization has been the object of considerable research, however, much of this research has proceeded without a proper knowledge of the microscopic occurrences of pyrite in coal. This paper investigates the forms, occurrences, and variations in the distribution of pyrite in major West Virginia coal scan. Twenty-nine samples from twenty-two major west Virginia coal scans were selected for this study (see Table I). The samples were selected so as to be representative of the major coal producing areas of the state. All samples, except five, were collected at active surface mines, as indicated in Table I, and all except one were channel samples. The time interval between sampling and preparation of polished microblocks varied from two months to two years, though most were prepared within three months of collection. Grinding, screen¬ing, and riffling of samples to obtain 250 grams of -20 mesh coal for microscopic analysis strictly followed ASTM procedure D2013-72.

Heavy mineral mining has been a relatively small but important Florida industry for over sixty years. Geology of the Florida heavy mineral deposits is similar. Each formed along active coastlines after which the titanium minerals were upgraded in TiO2 by post depositional oxidation and leaching of the iron. There are four heavy mineral plants currently Operating in Florida. Ore is mined by dredges and the heavy minerals concentrated by gravity separation. The heavy mineral concentrates are further processed with high tension and electromagnetic separators to Produce titanium mineral concentrates for TiO2 pigment manufacturing plants. Zircon sand is produced as a co-product at all of the Florida plants. Staurolite is produced by Du Pont and Titanium Enterprises. Du Pont also markets a kyanite-sillimanite product. (Monazite is produced by Humphreys and Titanium Enterprises). Reclamation of mined-out land is an important part of heavy mineral mining. At the Du Pont plants soil is removed ahead of the dredge and placed over the quartz sand tailings. Grass is planted after fertilizing. A year later the land is fertilized again and pine trees planted. Most of the heavy mineral deposits now being mined will be nearly exhausted by the end of the century. New deposits to be mined in the 21st century will probably be smaller and lower grade than those now being mined. Advances in mineral processing technology will have to be made to allow these lower grade deposits to be mined economically.

It is well known in both the research field and in commercial flotation processes that the grades and recoveries obtained from flotation plants are heavily influenced by the structure and height of the froths produced in the flotation cells. The development of steady-state mathematical models of flotation processes based upon practical and readily obtained parameters have demanded detailed information about the structure of flotation froths. The important parameters are the distribution of floating values, gangue and water in the froth with respect to froth height, cell pulp density, cell air flow rates and flotation inducing additives. Little work has been conducted in this field although considerable attention has been paid to bubble loading and other factors close to the cell froth/pulp interface. Laboratory batch tests are prefaced for the derivation of the above mentioned parameters for both practical and economic reasons. The standard laboratory flotation tests using a batch cell produces a froth of low height (1 to 3 cms generally) together with a varying cell pulp density as the test progresses due to the addition of top up water and the removal of froth from the cell. This form of test can be considered only as giving information about froth conditions close to the cell froth/pulp interface under conditions of widely varying cell pulp densities. In commercial processes the froth heights are much larger (frequently greater than 10 cms); therefore the laboratory batch test, although useful in many ways, does not directly yield parameters relating the state of the froth flowing over the cell lip to process operating conditions. To investigate flotation conditions, where more realistic froth heights are developed, an equilibrium type of batch cell has been developed at Warren Spring 1 Laboratory .
