Magnetic separation is an age-old technique for mineral beneficiation operations. The existing mathematical models for magnetic separators are quite complicated, and it is very difficult to measure the theoretical separation efficiency. The connectionist approach of modeling, to establish the relationships of the inputs and outputs, is preferred for this kind of problem. Experiments were carried out on a high-intensity roll magnetic separator to develop a database using four input variables (magnetic flux intensity, particle size, splitter position and roll speed) and two output variables (weight recovery and Fe recovery). The artificial neural network (ANN) and statistical methods (MLRG) were used to model the magnetic separation process. For the ANN, the regression coefficient (R2) values between the predicted and measured results were 0.89 and 0.94 for Fe recovery and weight recovery, respectively. Compared to ANN, the multivariable linear regression analysis showed inferior performance in predicting the weight recovery and the Fe recovery. The ANN models for the roll magnetic separator can predict the separation efficiency up to an acceptable limit. These models can be used to modify the operational parameters at mineral beneficiation plants to minimize the effects of variations in the raw material characteristics.

Newmont Gold's methods for deposit modeling vary, depending on geology, mining and processing methods, economic feasibility and availability of historical information. It is argued that successful modeling requires understanding these factors, knowing the strengths and weaknesses of the various modeling techniques and being flexible in selecting the appropriate methods. Newmont is one of the world's largest gold mining companies, with operations in the United States, Peru, Mexico, Indonesia and Uzbekistan. And it is active in exploration worldwide. At the end of 1996, Newmont declared a total reserve of 1.15 equity kt (37.1 million equity oz) of gold and 2.17 equity Mt (2.39 million st) of copper. The gold deposits managed by Newmont totaled 752 Mt (829 million st) of ore containing 1.28 kt (41.3 million oz) of gold averaging 1.71 g/t (0.05 oz/st). In addition, Newmont is developing a porphyry copper-gold deposit that totals 9.1 Gt (1 billion st) of ore containing 380 t (12.1 million oz) of gold and 4.82 Mt (5.32 million st) of copper. (In May 1997, Newmont Gold Co. merged with Santa Fe Pacific Gold Corp., thus increasing Newmont's reserves to 1.72 kt or 55.2 million oz of gold and 2.17 Mt or 2.39 million st of copper.)

The prevention of AMD in situ is more attractive compared to subsequent downgradient treatment alternatives that do not involve source control. AMD source control can be achieved by shifting the microbial activity in the sulfidic rock from pyrite oxidation to anaerobic heterotrophic activity. This is achieved by adding biodegradable organic carbon amendments to the sulfidic rock. This technique was applied in an abandoned mine pool with a pH of 3-3.5. Following treatment, near-neutral pH and decreased effluent heavy metal concentrations were achieved. In situ bioremediation by enhancement of bacterial iron and sulfate reduction is a promising technology for AMD prevention.

Charleston Water System?s Daniel Island Extension Tunnel, initially thought to be the simplest of the four replacement tunnels to design and build, became the most challenging after the discovery of an unexpected 30-ft thick lens of sand in the normally consistent Cooper Marl while sinking a shaft on Daniel Island. This paper will explore the challenges involved with determining the extent of the unforeseen lens of sand, the accelerated boring program, and the redesign of the vertical alignment?keeping the alignment between the sand layer and the bottom of the Cooper River. It will describe how the challenges were overcome, and how the Owner, Engineer, and Contractor were able to team together to achieve the desired results.

Surface and underground mining operations require equipment with high power output ratings. Haul trucks, loaders, dozers, and other equipment need increasing horse-power to meet production demands. To get more horsepower out of the engines driving the equipment, most manufacturers use turbocharging. Detroit Diesel puts the number at about 90% turbocharged, while Caterpillar estimates 75% to 80% of all its equipment is turbocharged. Turbocharging increases the power output and overall engine efficiency. But it presents some maintenance and operational problems that were not factors when only naturally aspirated engines (nonturbocharged) dominated the scene. A turbocharger is an exhaust-driven air compressor. Using the waste energy in the engine exhaust, a turbine wheel is driven. This wheel is connected by a common shaft to a compressor wheel. The shaft is supported by two plain bearings, or bushings. As the turbine wheel is rotated, the compressor wheel continually compresses the intake air to the cylinders. Compressing the intake air means that more air can be put into the cylinder to burn more fuel. The more fuel the engine can completely burn or combust, the more horsepower the engine can produce. Even though the turbocharger is a relatively simple device, it is a sensitive engine component. It requires special consideration at engine start-up and shutdown. Being freewheeling and exhaust driven, turbochargers can experience temperatures of 540°C 1000°F) and rotational speeds of more than 100,000 rpm. Due to those temperatures and speeds, lubrication is critical to the operation and life of a turbocharger. The turbo is located high on the engine, with the oil supply running through an external line from the sump. The recommended practice is to start the engine and allow it to idle for a few minutes before any revving or loading. This allows the oil to reach the turbo and properly lubricate the bearings before high rotational speeds are seen. Turbo oil supply lines can be as long as 1.5 m (5 ft). Depending on ambient temperatures and oil viscosity, it can take as long as 30 seconds for oil to reach the spinning turbo. However, as little as five seconds without oil can damage the turbo's bearings, reducing its life and overall efficiency. Lubrication problems seen at shut-down can also significantly affect turbo life and efficiency. Manufacturers recommend an idling period of five to seven minutes before engine shutdown. This allows the turbo to slow down and cool off somewhat to help prevent oil coking and bearing damage. When the engine stops, so does the oil supply. There is very little oil left on the bearing surfaces and in the turbo oil supply passages. The immediate heat transfer from the turbine wheel to shaft, bearings, and turbo body literally cooks what is left. This high heat without oil flow can cause bearing deformation by actually melting some of the bearing material. The rapid oil oxidation and coking will restrict oil passages, damage bearings and shaft. Besides heat soaking, there is another problem. If the turbo is spinning at high speeds when the engine is shutdown, the turbo must spin-down to a stop without oil flow. With the large size of turbos used on mining equipment, this spindown time without oil can be for as long as 10 to 20 seconds. Fortunately, lack of lubrication at start-up and shutdown and the subsequent bearing damage can be prevented by oil injection devices. These devices hold a reservoir of engine oil. The oil is injected to the turbocharger bearings immediately on start-up and for several minutes after shutdown. Oil injection devices are spring loaded, hydraulic accumulators. They are actuated at start-up by a solenoid wired to the starter motor. Engine oil pressure charges the accumulator during normal operation. Upon shut-down and loss of oil pressure, the device provides oil to the turbo for about two or three minutes. With an oil injection device, the engine can be started and immediately driven without fear of turbo damage. Also, an abrupt shutdown will not damage the turbocharger since the device will continue to lubricate for two or three minutes. A word of caution. Be sure the oil injection device provides positive oil displacement (pressurized oil flow). Do not use a gravity-flow device. Unless it is a true accumulator, the device could starve the turbo for oil on start-up, Ask for start-up and shut-down pressures and delivery times before considering installation. Keep the oil clean, and follow the manufacturer's recommended oil change intervals. These intervals are usually shorter than with naturally aspirated engines. Use oil with a CD rating designed for diesel applications. A multiviscosity oil is preferable. Use a synthetic engine oil, such as Mobil's Delvac 1, Gulf's Super Duty II, or Chevron's Sub-zero Fluid. Synthetics have much better flow properties at low temperatures. They also have greater oxidation stability (they can take the high heat of turbo-bearing lubrication. And they produce fewer deposits because they are more thermally stable. But synthetic oils do cost more - two or three times more. One additional point - maintain the air intake system. Since all mining is usually in a dusty environment, air filters should be changed regularly and intake systems should be checked for leaks. All intake air passes through the turbo. Any dirt or abrasives entering the turbo will damage the unit and shorten its life. While mining is a heavy duty business with severe operating conditions, you can get the life from your turbocharger that you expect by following a few simple steps: • equip the turbo with an oil-injection device to provide lubrication on start-up and shutdown; • change the oil and filters regularly; and • use the proper oil-synthetic, if possible.

Conventional Atmospheric Monitoring System (AMS) installations for monitoring CO, CH4, O2 and air-velocity throughout underground mines are usually relegated to a modest 3-5 mile extent and with data communication speeds confined to a ponderous 1-5K baud range. New US-MSHA and state regulations require fast reporting of unsafe conditions, and the old 20-30 minute updates are no longer acceptable. To communicate farther and faster has always been a problem, because data reliability degenerates with excessive distances and high speeds. Because of this, very large mines often resort to costly optical-fiber media, using expensive OF cables and repeaters to obtain the necessary coverage. This entails high initial cost, as well as high maintenance and downtime costs to repair or replace broken optical fibers. Rel-Tek has pioneered with its DX-Bus communication data highway, which uses inexpensive twisted-pair telemetry cables, which can now communicate well into the 20-mile extent of the largest mines -- normally a brick wall for low-tech AMS systems. This extended range, enables the use of twisted-pair cables and provides a low cost alternative to OF systems. This paper discusses the DX-Bus, and its latest accomplishment, the ?B-LINK,? a unique high-speed communication repeater that maintains the 19.2K-Baud data rate. On-going innovations to our workhorse Millennia-DX computer software have kept pace with this extra speed/distance phenomenon, resulting in a dually-optimized AMS package: both hardware and software. Cost savings are substantial, and at no sacrifice of reliability ? nearly always at 100%. Sensor updates are measured in seconds, not minutes and hours. Twisted pair copper cable is cheap to purchase and install and a breeze to maintain. Rel-Tek uses the B-LINK's wide branching capabilities to enable the AMS to extend 20-miles both far and wide. Actual experience in large US coal mines -- both longwall and continuous mining operations -- confirms the large mine performance. The ventilation and safety benefits to the mining industry are immeasurable.

"Quang Ninh province is located in the north east of Vietnam and the coal mining in the province generates two thirds of the province’s GDP. The coal is extracted from both open pit and underground mines for the country’s complete coal export and by a share of more than 90% for domestic coal usage. Overburden generated through open pit mines is piled up nearby in the form of large waste rock dumps. The side-hill fill dumping near open pit mines is the source of environmental degradation in the region. Among the current problems at solid waste rock dump sites are dust emissions during and after dumping as well as Acid Rock Drainage (ARD). One of the major existing problems at waste rock dumps is dump stability (comprising erosion, sliding and subsidence issues). The RAME R&D project (Research Association Mining and Environment in Vietnam) is - among other activities - actively involved in the research for stabilisation and rehabilitation of mine waste rock dumps in Vietnam in the form of several sub-projects. The Institute of Mining Engineering I of RWTH Aachen University is leading the sub-project of mine waste dump stabilisation in co-operation with Chair of Geotechnical Engineering and Brenk Systemplanung GmbH. Mine waste dumping in the form of layers as an alternative to the side-hill fill dumping is expected to bring up environmental and economical benefits by minimising the problems of dump sites with the contribution to a sustainable development. Reduction of the post construction settlements, long term stable dump profile with minimum erosion, improvement of material parameters for geotechnical slope stability through compaction from hauling trucks as well as economical evaluation of new dumping concepts are the areas of the current research. The project has been financed by German Federal Ministry for Research and Education (BMBF). The ultimate aim of the sub-project is the compilation of the project results in the form of a "Best Practice Guide" and software based "Decision Support System" for planning and management of solid mine waste dumps."

Introduction The most commonly used ground control design in coal mining is the determination of pillar size by various pillar strength formulae for mine layout (Bieniawski, 1983; Holland, 1973; Hustrulid, 1976; Obert and Duvall 1967; Wilson and Ashwin, 1972). However, there have been few documented case histories concerning the validity of those strength formulae. Recently there are indications that those strength formulae tend to overdesign considerably. From a safety point of view, there is nothing wrong with overdesign. But an overdesign with large chain pillars reduces the flexibility of machine movement and decreases production. It also reduces coal recovery and, thus, shortens the reserve's life. This is especially true for small operators who own a limited reserve. Those small mines, through past practices or out of necessity, experiment with smaller pillars than those predicted by the strength formulae. Conclusive ev¬idence has been collected that points to the need of a new concept of coal pillar design. Two case studies will be cited to illustrate this point. 3-D US pillar strength formulae Figure 1 shows a sectional layout of a one-unit mine. The seam was about 1.3 m (50 in.) thick with a uniform cover of 64 m (210 ft). A house was located near the center of the section. The homeowner demanded that no surface subsidence and domestic well dewatering should ever be allowed as a result of underground room-and-pillar mining. Physical properties - strength and Young's modulus - of the rock strata including coal were obtained by testing small samples in the laboratory. The uniaxial compressive strength of the coal was 3660 kPa (823 psi). Using various pillar strength formulae, the homeowner recommended that square chain pillars be at least 11 m (35 ft) wide. The coal company, however, desired to pursue optimum coal recovery in the safest and most economical manner. They engaged in three-dimensional finite element analysis of the section taking into account the complete stratigraphic sequence of the overburden. Results indicated that the section can be developed by 5.5 m (18 ft) wide entries at 21 m (70 ft) center-to-center. In retreat, the pillars can be splitted along both centerlines leaving a stump pillar of 5.5 m (18 ft) square at each of the four corners. The 5.5 m (18 ft) square stump pillars still maintained a safety factor of 1.5, although the safety factors calculated by various pillar strength

The National Mining Hall of Fame will induct five mining greats on Saturday, Sept. 17, 2005 at the Museum Convention Center in Leadville, CO. The 18thAnnual National Mining Museum and Hall of Fame Induction Banquet will begin with an open house and reception at 5:30 p.m., followed by the dinner and program at 7 p.m. The five inductees are Nathaniel Peter Hill, John Munro Longyear, John McDonald, Julius Eckhardt Raht and John Dennis Ryan. Nathaniel Peter Hill (1832-1900) built the first successful smelting operation in the Rocky Mountains in1867 at Black Hawk, CO. From 1879 to 1885, he was a U.S. senator. He also taught courses at the Colorado School of Mines.

The empirical rock failure criteria play an important role in predicting the mechanical behavior of rocks, since affecting parameters on the behavioral properties of rocks are complex and numerous. Usually the empirical failure criteria are obtained by statistical methods, namely by means of fitting the mathematical function onto the experimental data. For evaluation and verification of the results, however, the quality and accuracy of the fit must be considered. This paper studies the efficiency and accuracy of conventional empirical rock failure criteria using a new approach, which is based on the analysis of uncertainty amplitude on the constant parameters of each criterion. The approach adopted here, is based on the combination of some parameters such as Mean Squared Error (MSE), Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE), type of function, degree of freedom and the confidence level of constants. Correlation coefficient (R2) is then a comprehensive test and can be used effectively for comparison and accuracy of empirical rock failure criteria.

Introduction The Cannon mine at Wenatchee, WA has recently been brought into operation to recover gold from the sandstones of the Swauk formation. The mine is a joint venture between Asamera Minerals (US) Inc. and Breakwater Resources. A tailings impoundment was constructed to impound 2.7 to 3.6 Mt (3 to 4 million st) of tailings at 1.8 kt/a (2000 stpd) over about five years. This paper describes the design and construction of the impoundment. In particular, it describes the 100 m (300 ft) high earthfill embankment that is the main feature of the facility. Project environment The project is located on the outskirts of Wenatchee, a town of about 40,000 people. The town is situated on the flat alluvial terraces beside the Columbia River. The Cascade Mountains rise from the terraces in a series of ridges and valleys. The mine is at the foot of the Cascades. The tailings impoundment is in one of the steep valleys. The climate is mild and dry (Table 1). Site selection Twelve alternative sites within a 16-km (10-mile) radius of the mine were examined. Decision making theory was used to select the most suitable site. Advantages of the chosen site include its proximity to the mine and its low visibility from points of common public access. Also, the area was already heavily impacted by an existing silica quarry. The major disadvantage of the site is the need to pump tailings over a distance of 1.5 km (1 mile) and against a static head of 200 m (655 ft). Also, it is located in a gulch just upstream from the town of Wenatchee. Site geology The impoundment is generally underlain by interbedded sandstones and siltstones. The siltstones are often shattered. The sandstones are often friable. Both rock types are extensively jointed. Some isolated faulting of the sediments occurred before the area was covered with basalt flows. About 10,000 years ago, at the end of the ice age, the basalts were covered by 3 to 10 m (10 to 33 ft) of wind blown loess - a fine sandy clay and silt. River deposits filled the base of the valley to depths between 5 and 25 m (16 and 82 ft). Under the main part of the embankment, these materials were removed to expose bedrock. Ground water flow is generally through the more permeable layers. The permanent water table is about 5 m (16 ft) beneath the ground surface. Selecting a minicomputer is not unlike selecting a costly piece of mining equipment such as a truck, shovel, crusher, or conveyor belt system. A marked difference might lie in the frequency at which such selection takes place; another difference might be mine management's familiarity with mining equipment vis a vis a minicomputer. These basic differences might prompt a mining company to seek the aid of a consultant when selecting a minicomputer system. Advantages and Disadvantages The fundamental advantage of employing an independent consultant is that it provides management with a source of knowledge and breadth of experience not readily available within the organization. If the consultant has a minerals background, such knowledge and experience are further enhanced by actual experience in exploration, mining, and mineral processing. If the consultant has worked within a mining company, such hands-on experience is supplemented with a meaningful understanding of the client's business; this facilitates communication between the consultant and members of the client organization. The consultant has been, so to speak, "in the client's shoes." There are several other advantages. Since computer systems cut across organizational boundaries, the independent consultant may be able to move within the organization more easily than an inside staff person to collect necessary information. Also, detachment from any manufacturer should provide the client with an objectivity and a set of recommendations as near optimal as feasible. The principal disadvantages lie in the area of continuity and accountability. Once the consultant's report has been submitted and his recommendations implemented, a discontinuity might occur. Also, if implementation does not provide the desired results, the consultant might not be available to correct the situation or account for actions taken. Proper selection of consultant services, relative to kind and duration, and the consultant's method of operation, will often prevent many of these aftereffects. Services Offered The professional consultant can help a client: •Define and summarize information systems technology* needs; • Evaluate alternatives such as in-house capability and capacity, time-sharing, or service bureaus; • Prepare a formal request for proposal (RFP) to be submitted to vendors; •Evaluate vendor proposals; •Evaluate the economics of lease vs. purchase; and •Assist in the conversion and installation. Thus, consulting services may range from evaluating an existing system and upgrading to a larger piece of equipment, to selecting a new first-for-the-organization computer. First, Define and Summarize Needs Regardless of circumstances, the most valuable document required before equipment selection is the information system plan (I/S plan). It helps insure that the company's information needs are met in a cost-effective manner. An I/S plan is usually a comporient of the mining company's overall business goals. Since an I/S plan is a formal vehicle for establishing and communicating the direction the organization intends to take to satisfy information requirements needed to achieve goals and objectives, most initial systems services are likely to center around creating such a document or updating an existing document. The trend toward company-wide I/S planning is increasing in the mining industry; however, smaller scale efforts focused at the information systems needs to support an individual

The Gualcamayo Mine is located in the Andes Mountains north of San Juan, Argentina (Figure 1). A property of Yamana Gold Inc, it declared commercial production in July 2009 and has a total mineral reserve and resource base of approximately 88,000 kg of gold. Crushing operations for the open-pit mine are located in a 13,500 m3 underground cavern with a ceiling height of 22 m. More than 3,600 m of tunnels are used to access the cavern and convey the ore. The Project as described in this paper relates to the design and construction of the Main Cavern, Conveyor System Exit Tunnel, the Mechanical System Access Tunnels, and two 4.20 m diameter shafts (Ore Pass #1 and Ore Pass #2) as shown in Figure 2. [ ] Preliminary engineering for the Project was performed by Hatch Chile. Rizzo Associates Argentina, S.A., a division of Paul C. Rizzo Associates, Inc (Rizzo) was contracted to provide geomechanical and geotechnical support for the construction of the access tunnel system and geomechanical design and construction supervision for the cavern and shafts.

We look at the empirical evidence of coal block auctions in India to understand how competitive intensity affects the bid amounts in common value auctions. The results suggest that competitive intensity measured through the number of bidders for a coal block is instrumental in determining the bidding outcomes. The presence of higher numbers of bidders in the auction leads to higher bids - every additional bidder causes the bid amount to rise by INR 142.67 per tonne of coal for auctions studied for 127 coal blocks from 2014 to 2023. The paper also examines the moderating and mediating effect of competition on bids and on excess of bids from the comparative market price of coal from alternative source of Coal India Limited. The results indicate that competitive intensity does not have statistically significant impact on the relationship between common value of coal blocks and bids, neither as a moderator nor as a mediator. The strategic behavior of the bidders has also been observed as bidders have been seen to bid in a higher than market price in order to outbid the competitors.

The vast majority of U.S. coal preparation plants utilize screen-bowl centrifuges to dewater their fine clean coal products. In light of this popularity, researchers at Virginia Tech have engaged in a variety of laboratory and industrial field test programs to develop technological enhancements that have the potential to further improve the performance of this important solid-liquid separation process. These enhancements, which include simple design modifications and new reagent packages, have been shown to significantly improve solids recovery and reduce product moisture in several experimental trials.

The possibility of using 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol dissolved in tetrachloromethane as extractant for boron recovery is discussed. The parameters optimized for this purpose are contact time, boron concentration in the aqueous phase, extractant concentration, equilibrium pH and phase ratio. NaOH is used as stripping agent for boron recovery from the loaded organic phase. Boron extraction is found to be a slow process (equilibrium time 20 minutes) compared to boron stripping, which is reasonably fast (equilibrium time 5 min). Maximum boron extraction is possible at a broad pH range from 1.0 to 6.0. Using 1.0M extractant concentration, a 1:1 phase ratio (organic: aqueous) and two stages, ~99% boron extraction is achieved. More than 97% boron stripping is possible using 0.5M NaOH at a 1:1 (organic: aqueous) phase ratio in two stages. Overall, a 95.6% boron recovery was achieved. Loss of solvent into the aqueous phase and co-extraction of Ca, Na and K into the organic phase at higher equilibrium pH are two major concerns in his process.

To mitigate and control the combined sewer overflows from 17 outfalls in the City of Detroit, three outfalls in Dearborn Heights and eight outfalls in Redford Township, the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department has completed the preliminary design of a storage tunnel in 2005. In 2006, a final design has revised the alignments and the inside diameter (ID) of the tunnel. The revised tunnel system includes an 11.28-km(7-miles) 9.14-m (30-ft) ID tunnel, a 24.4-m (80-ft) ID pump station, two work shafts about 15.2-m (50-ft) ID each, and 14 drop shafts with various IDs. This paper discusses the latest development of this tunnel system.

Fourteen samples of pyrite-bearing Archean greenstone rock (d < 6.35 mm, 0.04% < St < 1.22%) were characterized (particle size, chemistry, mineralogy) and subjected to laboratory dissolution testing. The only sulfide and carbonate minerals identified were pyrite and siderite, respectively. Quartz, chlorite and sericite typically comprised 90 to 98 percent of the mineral content. For the first 60 weeks, seven samples with sulfur contents less than or equal to 0.16% produced drainage pH values exceeding 6.0. Over this period, six of the seven samples with sulfur contents greater than or equal to 0.20% produced drainage pH below 6.0, with minimum values ranging from 3.2 to 4.7. The seventh sample (0.72% S) had a siderite content of 18%. Small amounts of magnesium and, to a lesser degree, calcium carbonates present in the siderite apparently dissolved to neutralize acid and maintain drainage pH above 6.0. Sulfate release rates generally increased as sulfur content increased, and the rates of pyrite oxidation estimated for individual samples were roughly half to five times that reported in the literature for the abiotic oxidation of pyrite by oxygen. In 1998, the Concentrator Modeling Center was established within the Coleraine Minerals Research Lab to develop models for simulation of iron ore processing plants, and to assist plant operators in improving performance of their aging plants. The short-term objective was to develop necessary models for reliable simulation using conventional techniques, while the long-term objective was set as liberation-based modeling and simulation of these plants. The short-term objective was achieved in 2002, after the development of models for magnetic separators, hydroseparators and fine screens. A project funded the US Department of Energy was carried out to demonstrate the capability in improving iron ore processing at the Mittal plant. As a result of this study, a 10% improvement in throughput at the plant was obtained, and simulation became a desired tool for plant operators. A significant step in the long-term objective was reached in 2005 with the development of a liberation model. This was followed by incorporation of models capable of processing liberation data into the software. By early 2007, the Center had the capability of performing liberation-based simulation of entire plants.

It is undisputed that an interaction between mine fires and mine ventilation systems exists. The ventilation carries the poisonous and sometimes explosive combustion products, which constitute the greatest danger of mine fires, through the mine and it provides the oxygen on which the intensity of the fire depends. The fire, on the other hand, can produce considerable ventilation disturbances which make it difficult to predict the path along which the combustion products travel. The opinions, how serious a threat such fire generated ventilation disturbances are, vary. Where shallow deposits are mined and brisk ventilation currents are used, it is frequently felt that these disturbances are of no serious concern. Where mine workings extend over larger elevation differences and where such disturbances have been encountered and been the cause of some larger disasters, their assessment is an integral part of all fire emergency plans. The author felt that the potential of digital computers for the design of ventilation emergency plans, contrary to their acceptance for conventional ventilation planning for more than two decades, is not yet fully utilized. He designed a program for the simulation of ventilation systems under emergency conditions in particular fires. This was part of work completed for a contract with the U.S. Bureau of Mines ( Open File Report OFR 115(1)-78)
