The mining, quarrying and construction industries are often blamed for causing damage to residential-type structures when explosives are used. The claim experience for blasting vibration damage has been poor. This coverage is excluded from the Comprehensive General Liability (CGL) policy. To obtain this coverage, the policyholder must meet additional criteria and an additional premium must be paid. The risk management process offers the explosives user a technique for minimizing the risk of complaints and vibration damage claims on his insurance program and his cash flow. Case histories indicate that the vibration damage claims expense may be a lower risk than the risk of interference with production and cash flow. An annotated bibliography on risk management and defense of vibration damage claims is provided.

Small blocks of granodiorite have been subjected to blast loads from a single borehole and from a series of boreholes detonating at various timing intervals. The damage of the blocks was assessed through P-wave velocity monitoring, measuring the change of the point load strength index of the rock after dividing the large blocks into smaller ones and measuring the work index of the material at different distances away from the blasthole. Numerical modelling with the AutodynTM code enabled visualization of damage. It was shown that damage is optimum at a small delay time between successive holes while it drops rather drastically after this point.

Given the capital intensity of the dragline operation coupled with rising cost of explosives, the onus is on mine operators to make maximum use of explosives in blasting to assist dragline diggability. At a surface coal mine in South Africa large boulders necessitating secondary breakage and in some cases completely unfragmented sections of a blast resulting in low dragline diggability were encountered in the interburden blast. Twelve blasts were therefore closely monitored and dragline productivity evaluated. The ultimate aim was to improve the overall blasting performance and hence increase dragline productivity. Three areas were in focus; fragmentation assessment, dragline productivity assessment and cost analysis. The studies indicated unsatisfactory explosive and initiation performance, problematic blast design and questionable operators performance. It is established that dragline cost account for 60% of the total mining cost whereas the drilling and blasting cost account for the remaining 40% and that improvement in dragline productivity results in automatic cost saving.

Transmission of sound through the atmosphere is affected by local conditions. Anecdotal accounts of the sound of cannon fire traveling great distances go back to the Civil War. The Royal Society published a paper near the turn of the century concerning the reports from the cannons fired in London at the funeral of Queen Victoria. Early computers were used by the U.S. Army at Aberdeen in Maryland in the 1950’s to model airblast problems during munitions demolition. Today’s blaster has to have access to weather information beyond a simple local forecast. Surface winds, winds aloft and temperature profiles have a dominant role in neighbors reaction to blasting. Many ground vibration complaints are really airblast complaints. Blasters who maintain ground velocities under . 1 inches/ second are often perplexed by complaints from distant neighbors, even when local monitoring shows airblast to be under 110 dB. This paper will help the blaster identify warning signs of high airblast conditions.

There are several methods for demolition of structures but most of them depend mostly on conventional ways of using machines for breaking and crushing structural elements. However the need for lots of work force, expense and extreme amount of time for demolition, made most of these methods non-popular nowadays. Therefore, trials to accomplish a more economic and less time taking method lasted with the use of blasting. By applying controlled blasting on a suitable structure, the structure can collapse and break down to pieces in very short period of time, with no extra work force and cost. In spite of advantages of explosive demolition, the potential danger of explosives and the damage that the blasting may cause to surrondings, if not controlled properly, made people timid to the method especially in urban areas. Therefore, the pre-assumption by computational analysis has become an essential matter in the process.

The Dynamics Effects Laboratory at the University of Maryland conducted a series of very small scale tests to measure the impulse delivered to a plate by the detonation of an explosive charge which was buried in saturated sand. These tests were conducted to support a full scale tests series being supported by the Navy (NSWC Indian Head Division) to learn more about loads applied to structures by explosive detonation. For each of the tests being predicted, a series of three tests were conducted at Maryland, one with a 0.203 gm charge, one with a .609 gm charge, and one with a 3.3 gm charge. A high speed digital camera (500 frames per second) was used to record the displacement of the plate as a function of time. From this the initial velocity of the plate was determined and then the impulse delivered to the plate by the explosive. A best fit line through the data was determined for the three model tests conducted and this equation was used to extrapolate the predicted impulse for the full scale tests.

This paper includes research and investigation into blast design and blast optimization for vibration control in municipal and tight blasting situations, where specifications were extremely stringent. The paper is written for the field blaster to understand and develop blast plans based on field conditions. The paper includes blast design considerations, utilizing seismograph arrays to check and predict vibration results, and problems encountered in vibration monitoring in extremely tight situations (0-20 feet). Blast vibration frequency, acceleration, peak particle velocities, and relative displacement are discussed with effects in the near and far fields and blast designs utilized to stay under limits. The paper also discusses using the latest in technology for blast design to control vibration. Equipment includes 2D and 3D laser profiling systems, digital video, fragmentation analysis, seismograph arrays, and borehole tracking devices. Other topics are discussed such as public relations, working with regulatory personnel, unions, and other project consultants, and the problems associated with municipal blasting situations, such as, flyrock and proximity of other personnel and equipment on the project.

Active avalanche control is the intentional triggering of avalanches while people are kept out of the hazard area. Explosives are frequently the most effective tool for triggering avalances. In a highway setting an avalanche control program will reduce total highway closure time, while providing greater safety to motorists and maintenance personnel. Avalanche control with explosives is effective when the snow is somewhat unstable and almost ready to slide naturally. Forecasting this condition involves having a network of local meteorological stations, examining snow structure, using mountain weather forecasts, doing snow strength tests, and having the results of ski and explosive tests. The method of delivery of explosives to an avalanche starting zone is governed by the accessibility of the starting zone. Common methods include; hand placing or throwing charges, remote delivery cableways, or "trams", surplus military weapons, and a compressed gas charge launcher, or "Avalauncher". Charges dropped from helicopters are also occasionally use. We have increased the effectiveness of our program by use of large elevated charges. Efforts are being made around the world to develop and utilize better methods for the safe, remote initiation, but procedures have varied dramatically between individual control programs. There is now a movement to review and standardize operational guidelines for avalanche control. Highway avalanche control is often done at night, during winter mountain storms. Heavy rain or snow, high winds, and high avalanche hazard, are common work site conditions. Commercial and economic pressures are increading, so methods that redice highway closure time are important. There are also many safety issues to be addressed in avalanche control work.

Photos 1 - 4 – Chris Elliott is a rock slope supervisor on a construction project east of Seattle, Washington. His job is to look after a “two man” scaling crew working on the rock bluffs some 300 feet in height along the I-90 interstate just east of the town Hyak. The Washington State Rock Engineers noticed a very large mass of unstable rock along the upper rock face and asked us to take it out. Chris is loading explosives in 1½" ” holes that are 8 to 10 feet deep by 40 feet long with 1¼” x 8” power primer on the unstable rock mass that is about 300 feet above the new road construction. I-90 runs east and west longside the new construction note the containment fence and the ship containers along the highway for protection and Lake Keechelus in the background.

This paper explores a multi-faceted approach to drill optimization, focusing on minimizing delays, and enhancing operational effectiveness. Key areas of inefficiency such as shift changes, fuel and water delays, and time lost between drilling holes are analyzed to identify actionable improvements. Equipment related factors, including the frequency of drill bit and drill steel changes, as well as the condition of deck bushings, are evaluated for their impact on downtime and performance consistency. Additionally, the integration of smooth drives and shock subs is examined for their role in reducing vibration related wear and improving drilling precision. Optimization of pattern approach strategies is highlighted as a means to reduce non-productive movement and align drilling with blast design more effectively. To support continuous improvement and accountability, the implementation of a driller scorecard is proposed. This tool enables the measurement of individual performance based on key operational metrics, fostering a culture of data driven management. Through a combination of field data analysis and best practice recommendations, this study provides a comprehensive framework for enhancing drilling productivity in mining operations. The findings aim to support mine operators in achieving higher efficiency, reducing operational costs, and extending equipment life through targeted optimization strategies.

A few years ago, the term Track & Trace for explosives was only known in Europe and Brazil at most; the introduction of this technology is experiencing an undreamt-of boom worldwide. More and more countries are enacting legislation to introduce Track & Trace of explosives and follow Europe and Brazil on this path. At present, the world's leading manufacturers are already using such solutions, are in the process of implementing them, or are in the planning process. However, based on the experience gained in Europe, there are outstanding challenges for all manufacturers. These are questions of compliance, logistics, distribution, and, of course, especially, the necessary adaptation of the production environment. However, this development involves considerable effort on the part of the manufacturers. New devices for marking the explosives and digitally recording the data are integrated into the production process. This should be done as cost-effectively as possible, without restricting production capacity and speed, and with as few process changes as possible. This paper uses real-life customer experiences examples to explain paths from project design to real implementation. Lessons learned from the experience of European explosives manufacturers are presented, missteps are described, and solutions are identified. Individual steps along this path are explained, and solutions are told to avoid pitfalls and bottlenecks. Finally, it refers to the risk analysis and concrete examples in implementing the planning into production. Methods of marking various explosives are shown, and the use of Track & Trace to solve logistics tasks in picking and shipping explosives, including the data exchange with ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) systems.

A large iron ore open pit mine in Brazil operates with reduced blast sizes, due to the imminence of red alerts in the rainy season and the proximity of plant and dam structures that demand control of the maximum load of fired explosives. Blasts are currently not allowed to remain loaded with explosives due to the risk of red alerts, limiting mine operations close to them. There is a need to increase the blast sizes, reducing the number of events required to obtain the planned mass and, consequently, the unproductive operating hours lost with mine evacuations. The WebGen™ wireless electronic initiation system is a technology for firing detonators via lowfrequency magnetic induction that propagates through the medium, without physical connection. A blast was carried out with 406 holes divided into 4 panels, aiming to validate the preloading technique with wireless detonators and its performance in safety and productivity. The absence of lead wires in the system eliminates the risk of interaction between vehicles and detonator cables in stemming and loading operations, which can result in unplanned detonation or misfire. By eliminating the need for a spotter, it reduces people's exposure to dust and the risk of human-machine interaction. Furthermore, it eliminates the risk of unplanned detonation caused by lightning strikes. The pre-loading technique with wireless detonators enables flexibility and efficiency in planning through temporary accesses over loaded areas. In the demonstration, driving over the loaded area was essential to avoid jams and excessive wear on equipment due to the narrow berm and very friable material. Another gain in productivity was optimizing operational stages, since detonators were programmed in parallel with loading, anticipating process stages, in addition to eliminating the need to connect detonators. Considering the average handling and savings in downtime due to the reduction of blasting events, a potential increase in movement of 49,000t (54,013 short tons) in 3 months was estimated, keeping the vibration results within the required limit. The trial with wireless detonators demonstrated the feasibility of carrying out blasts with preloaded panels, without restrictions on the number of panels or detonators, enabling vibration control, innovating mine planning and increasing safety and productivity
