One of the lithium minerals most widespread in the earth's surface is spodumene (Li20-A1203-4Si02), a lithium aluminium silicate. For some time, deposits of this mineral were known to exist in the Black Hills of South Dakota, but it was only quite recently that Hess4/ pointed out the great magnitude of the low-grade deposits in forth Carolina. The theoretical lithia (Li20) content of spodumene is 9.04 percent. The only other minerals with such high lithia content are the phosphates, but these occur only in pockets and are not in extensive deposits5/. Actually, however, the lithia content in spodumene is never found to be this high, being nearly always below 7 percent for the pure mineral, and part of the lithia is apparently replaced by other alkalies.

The pig iron nugget process is gaining in importance as an alternative to the traditional blast furnace. Throughout the process, self-reducing?fluxing dried greenballs composed of iron ore concentrate, reducing-carburizing agent (coal), flux (limestone) and binder (bentonite) are heat-treated. During the heat treatment, dried greenballs are first transformed into direct reduced iron (DRI), then to transition direct reduced iron (TDRI) and finally to pig iron nuggets. The furnace temperature and/or residence time and the corresponding levels of carburization, reduction and metallization dictate these transformations. This study involved the determination of threshold furnace temperatures and residence times for completion of all of the transformation reactions and pig iron nugget production. The experiments involved the heat treatment of self-reducing?fluxing dried greenballs at various furnace temperatures and residence times. The products of these heat treatments were identified by utilizing optical microscopy, apparent density and microhardness measurements.

The effects of adding varying amounts of type I portland cement to hydraulic backfill are described. Six different fill materials, each with three cement contents, were tested to determine which fill properties have the most significant effect on cemented strength. Two strength prediction equations, based on the physical and mineralogical properties of the fills, were formulated, and these accounted for 96 and 99 percent of the variability of the data. Results of both unconfined compression and triaxial tests of cemented fills are given, and the effects of moist curing and fill densification on the 7-day strength are discussed. Permeability test data are given, and the decreased permeability due to cement content and curing time is shown graphically. A discussion of the limited evaluation of other potential stabilization additives (expansive cement, fly ash, sodium silicate, gypsum, and asphalt) is included in an appendix.

CHUQUICAMATA open-pit mine is capable of producing a total of 105,000 tons daily. When the sulphide plant is operating to capacity the distribution of this quantity will be approximately 30,000 tons sulphide ore, 30,000 tons oxide ore and 45,000 tons of waste. At that time the combined capacity of the oxide and sulphide plants will be about 540 million lb of copper per year. Twenty one benches have been opened to date and all are still active except the three top ones at the northeastern limit of the pit. These have been pushed back to final slope line. The pit is 8850 ft long, 3540 ft wide and 980 ft deep. Benches are not all developed to a standard height as the large development shovels used in cutting new benches have been of different size and range. At this time new benches 521 ft high are being developed with an' 11-yd shovel. Ore haulage through the greater part of the pit operation has been on down grades to the crushing plant. With the opening of bench F-4 in April 1944 the first adverse-grade ore haul was encountered. Of the total tonnage now being mined, 35 pct comes from the four benches that are below the level of the crushing plant yard. Waste had been dumped on the same or nearly the same level as the bench from which it was removed up to the opening of bench F-4. Waste from this and lower levels is hauled to the level of the crusher, yard where it must cross the flow of ore traffic to reach the only available dumping space to the east of the mine. The average ore haul is 3.13 miles one way shovel to crusher, and the average waste haul from that portion handled by railroad is 3.32 miles one way from shovel to waste dump. Waste that is being removed by truck haulage from the upper part of the -mine is hauled an average of 1 mile. Ore loaded by trucks is hauled 3/4 mile to a car loading ramp and then by rail to the crushing plant. Drilling and Blasting There are two types of development for blasting being used: One for opening new benches and the other for bank shooting. The former consists of 9a in. diam churn-drill holes drilled 11.8 ft center to center in rows 10.2 ft apart with the holes staggered in the rows thus giving an equilateral-triangle pattern of 11.8 ft on a side. After the first block, 492 ft long by 71.5 ft wide, is shot in the pattern described above, the cut is advanced by smaller shots consisting of four rows of holes spaced 23 ft center to center with the rows 23 ft apart. These shots are fired in conjunction with side shots in which the holes are drilled 33 ft center to center and 29.5 ft back from the toe, thus squaring up the bank for subsequent shooting. The electrodes of a Submerged Arc Furnaces carry a high current and are subject to enormous stresses caused by both the electric arc itself, and the current distribution within the electrode. The external effect of the arc on the electrode is treated in a different paper at this conference, The purpose of this paper is to analyze the thermal effects of ohmic heating within the electrode at the arc attachment on the carbon based electrode, using data for Søderberg electrodes. The thermal conditions are then used to examine stress conditions in the vicinity of an arc. Two types of models of an electrode are presented in the paper. The first type is an accurate finite element model, based on both two and three dimensional elements and the second type is an one dimensional model, providing better insight into the problem. For the second type, a spherical model of thermal conditions in a semi-infinite solid has been developed. Results show that the electrode surface is heated quickly up to a maximum temperature and for a specific test case, the surface can only withstand the load for about 10 seconds. Also, the thermal stresses on the surface are very high which will increase erosion on the surface in addition to normal evaporation.

Rock stress measurement is cast in the more general context of the determination of boundary conditions for rock engineering. A study on the effect of elastic anisotropy on underground excavations reveals that this effect is actually controlled by the imposed boundary conditions. Applications to tunneling and to the Underground Research Laboratory (URL), Canada, exemplify a procedure for boundary condition estimation formerly developed by the authors. The procedure displayed fast convergence despite the complex geometry, and the high degree of non-linearity of the models. In the URL application, the 3-D model was able to completely reproduce the complex measured stress pattern, and the 90° rotation of the principal in situ stresses with depth. In order to reliably estimate the boundary conditions reproducing the current in situ state of stress, response measurements of the rock mass to current disturbances are necessary as input data. La mesure des contraintes in situ tombe dans le domaine général de la détermination des conditions aux limites pour les problèmes de mécanique des roches. Une étude sur le rôle de l’anisotropie élastique sur les excavations souterraines montre que ce rôle est contrôlé par les conditions aux limites qui sont imposées. L’application aux tunnels et au Laboratoire Souterrain de Recherche (URL) au Canada, nous permet de présenter une méthode de détermination des conditions aux limites. La méthode converge rapidement bien que le géométrie soit complexe et que le problème soit non-linéaire. Pour le URL, le modèle 3D est capable de reproduire la distribution des contraintes qui ont été mesurées ainsi que la rotation de 90 degrés des contraintes in situ avec la profondeur. Afin de déterminer avec précision les conditions aux limites responsables pour la distribution actuelle des contraintes, la réponse du massif rocheux doit être connue et mesurée. Eine Studie legt dar, dass der Effekt elastischer Anisotropie in unterirdischen Aushoehlungen von den Randbedingungen kontrolliert ist. Eine von den Authoren entwickelte Methode zur Bestimmung der Randbedingungen wird an Beispielen im Tunnelbau und im Underground Research Laboratory (URL) in Kanada illustriert. Auch bei komplexer Geometrie und einem hohen Grad an Nicht-Linearitaet zeigt diese Methode ein schnelles Konvergenzverhalten. Ein 3D-Model und dessen 90° Drehung der lokalen Hauptspannungen mit der Tiefe, kann bei einer URL Anwendung vollstaendig reproduziert werden. Um mit dieser Methode die Randbedingungen zuverlaessig abschaetzen zu koennen, werden der gegenwaertige lokale Spannungszustand sowie die Antwort des Gesteins und die resultierenden Stoerungen als Eingabedaten benoetigt.

"Scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM–EDX), and Time of flight secondary ion mass spectroscopy (TOF-SIMS)were used to analyze pyrochlore grains from Niobec froth flotation plant. Samples from the mill feed, pyrochlore rougher feed, pyrochlore rougher concentrate, and tail were analyzed in order to identify a potential relationship between pyrochlore matrix composition and selective separation. SEM-EDX analyses indicate that pyrochlore grains with high Fe content appear to be less recoverable than those with a lower Fe content and that the flotation response is related to matrix Fe rather than Fe occurring as inclusions. TOF-SIMS was used to analyse the surface of high Fe and low Fe pyrochlore, in order to identify a potential relationship between pyrochlore matrix composition and the related effect on cationic collector adsorption (tallow diamine). Surface analyses of pyrochlore from a conditioning test show that species indicative of the collector favour the surface of Fe poor pyrochlore relative to the Fe rich variety. The results from the conditioning test illustrate a negative relationship between collector loading and the presence of Fe and related oxidation species. This study identifies the link between pyrochlore matrix Fe content and, the presence of surface oxidation products, to collector loading. Poor Fe rich pyrochlore recovery noted in the Niobec froth flotation plant may be partially explained by this mechanism.INTRODUCTIONPyrochlore, the most abundant niobium containing mineral (Perrault and Manker, 1981) is economically recovered in Brazil, China, and Canada (Niobec) (Kouptsidis et al., 2008). Since 1974 Niobec has been extracting niobium from the St-Honorécarbonatite deposit. Niobec is the only operating Nb extraction facility in North American and one of the three major world producers of ferroniobium (Dufresne and Goyette, 2004; Belzile, 2009).Flotation is the preferred and most cost-effective method for pyrochlore recovery (Burks, 1958; Shapolov and Polkin, 1958; Zakharov et al., 1967; Razvozzhaev and Nikiforov, 1972; Bogdanov et al., 1973; Abeidu, 1974; Raby and Desrochers, 1975; Wilson, 1979; Biss and Nadeau, 1982; Biss, 1985). With the aim of optimising the flotation process for the Niobec ore, numerous experiments were performed on the influence of surfactants and type of water to optimise pyrochlore recovery and grade during flotation (Gomez et al., 1987; Rao et al., 1988; Dufresne and Goyette, 2004; Belzile, 2009)."

The Grasberg block cave rail haulage system will be located in the Grasberg mining district on the island of Papua, Indonesia at an elevation of almost 3000 m above sea level. It will transport 160 000 t of ore per day from multiple chute galleries to the underground crushing systems. The design entails approximately 23 km of rail (ballasted and embedded track), over 120 ore chutes to deliver ore to the muck cars and three unloading stations to deliver ore to the crushers. The rail haulage system is a closed-loop system entirely within the underground mining complex.The GBC rail haulage project will be a substantial operation. Trains consist of 11–12 bottom-dump 20 m3 muck cars driven by a 40 t electric locomotive, about 400 t per trainload. Approximately 12 trains and one spare are required to maintain full production at 160 000 t/d. All rail installations will be 1435 mm (standard) gauge with AS60 steel.The rail system is designed to operate in full automated mode, including chute loading, hauling and dumping. The operation will be controlled from a surface control room.The rail haulage project has been divided into five stages, which will be brought online over the course of ten years. Current development and construction are focused on Stage 1 for initial production that will occur beginning in late 2017. This stage includes 24 chutes in three chute galleries, one unloading station, workshop areas and almost 7 km of track (3 km of embedded and 4 km of ballast).This paper describes the key components of the rail haulage system and reports on the current status of development and construction of the system. Recently in Japan, unexpected degradation (surface subsidence) at old underground quarry sites, such as 'Ohya-Ishi' (pumice tuff) pit field has often been occurred. At these quarry sites, the excavation was started 20 or 30 years ago with mechanical chain cutter and the Room and Pillar method, and stopped 7 or more years ago. Therefore, a reliable method has been required for an estimation of long term mechanical properties of the rock and for an observation of a stability of rock-pillars or structures. In this study, creep tests under uniaxial compressive load were carried out on the 'Ohya-Ishi', with the aim of estimating the long term stability of the rock. From these results, a creep mechanism of the rock was discussed using the failure mechanism hypothesis proposed by Bieniawski and by others. On this basis, critical time to failure was predicted by the relationship between the logarithm of life time and stress ratio of the sustained axial creep load. Additionally, outline of the monitoring system of AE/MS activity in the field, which have set by the Ohya Aria Consolidate Public Corporation and the others to predict or to prevent the degradation of those residual pillars, is to be reported. The purpose of a mineral comminution circuit with a ball mill running in closed-loop with a hydrocyclone classification cluster is to feed the downstream process with the target particle size. Maintaining the optimal particle size in the flotation feed can significantly improve plant cash flow. In particular, reducing the amount of coarse material is often a major challenge. Existing instrumentation to provide particle size measurement is considered standard equipment in most modern concentrator plants. However, availability is often very low, mainly owing to high maintenance requirements of the analyser and associated sampling system.CiDRA Minerals Processing has developed two novel and robust technologies that address this challenge by providing high reliability and very low maintenance systems for on-line measurement of coarse material in the overflow of individual hydrocyclones. The first system is non-invasive and measures pebbles and rocks greater than 6 mm. This paper focuses on the second system, which is a ruggedized wetted sensor design with no moving parts and provides a real-time trend of the desired target grind size parameter, such as percentage above 150 micron.Both systems have simple robust designs and measure in the primary overflow stream of the individual hydrocyclone. Individual hydrocyclone measurement enables identification of poor performing hydrocyclones in addition to providing a representative measurement of the whole hydrocyclone cluster. The systems do not require sampling and associated sample transfer piping circuits that are prone to plugging, thus avoiding high maintenance requirements.The wetted sensor will be described in detail along with its implementation in a robust control scheme in a major copper concentrator in North America. We describe a technique that allows rapid imaging of the thermal diffusivity of the sample by a modified photo-thermal technique. The thermal diffusivity in hardened steels strongly correlates to the hardness. Hence in a noncontact manner and with optical microscope resolution, a 2D map exhibiting the crystallographic phases and hardness of the sample can be retrieved. Two almost collinear laser beams scan the surface, one as a modulated pump and a second as a CW probe. The deflection of the probe carries information on the thermal expansion of the sample and with it, on the thermal diffusivity. It is shown that a single determination of the time delay of the modulation of the probe beam can be used to retrieve the thermal diffusivity.

The Pebble deposit contains three contiguous zones. In the Pebble West zone, granodiorite stocks intrude gently warped volcanosedimentary rocks that had been intruded by diorite sills and two felsic intrusion breccias. In the Central zone, volcanosedimentary rocks are cut by diorite and granodiorite sills; the latter are genetically associated with the granodiorite stocks. In these zones, widespread potassic alteration consists of brown biotite and K-feldspar, with abundant quartz-carbonate-sulphide vein stockworks. Chalcopyrite/pyrite ratios range from 2/1 to 1/20. Diorite hosts the highest-grade mineralization, with much of it being disseminated. Patchy, later phyllic alteration is moderate and commonly depleted in copper. The Pebble East zone occupies a granodiorite stock and intruded host rocks below an eastwardly thickening wedge of barren Tertiary volcanic and sedimentary rocks up to 600 m thick. Brown biotite alteration and copper mineralization are strong, with chalcopyrite/pyrite ratios commonly over 1/1. The zone extends to a depth of at least 1200 m below surface; some drill holes bottomed in strong mineralization. Later, weak to moderate sericitic alteration removed some chalcopyrite and locally remobilized gold. The Pebble deposit has a Measured/Indicated resource of 3 billion tonnes grading 0.28% Cu, 0.32 g/t Au and 0.015% Mo (= 0.5% copper-equivalent) and an Inferred resource of 1.13 billion tonnes grading 0.30 g/t Au, 0.27% Cu and 0.015% Mo (0.55% copper-equivalent). The Pebble East zone has an Inferred resource of 2.13 billion tonnes grading 0.55% Cu, 0.34 g/t Au, and 0.037% Mo (0.97% copper-equivalent). The Pebble East zone is open to the east and to a lesser extent to the north, south, and to depth.

So far, a large number of algorithms have been developed for the optimization of pit limits, most of which follow deterministic rules. In this paper, a new algorithm is introduced, which follows a probabilistic logic using the Markov chain process. The algorithm is implemented on a transition matrix that corresponds to the 2D conventional economic block model of the mining area. The probability of mining a block is proportional to the desirability it may provide. Applying this algorithm, the probability of mining each block is obtained, and finally, the optimum pit limits are defined as the pit, which provides the highest probability of mining. In order to validate the proposed model, a numerical example is given and the results of the algorithm are compared to those of a dynamic programming algorithm. A 2D analysis of the problem is discussed in this paper. Although dealing with 3D problems requires larger size matrices, the optimization method is the same and the algorithm does not need any smoothing.

Batu Hijau is an island arc porphyry copper-gold deposit located in the southwest corner of Sumbawa Island in the Sunda-Banda archipelago of Indonesia. Southwest Sumbawa Island is underlain by Early Tertiary, low-K calc-alkaline to weakly alkaline volcanic and intrusive rocks. Within the mine area the oldest exposed rocks are medium- to thick-bedded, medium to coarse andesite volcanic lithic breccia, thin bedded, fine-grained volcaniclastic sandstones and mudstones and hypabyssal porphyritic andesite. In the eastern portion of the mine area there is a thick sequence of quartz diorite that postdates the andesites. A small stock of Equigranualar Quartz Diorite predates the Batu Hijau deposit and occupies the contact between the andesitic volcaniclastic sequence of rocks and the Porphyritic Quartz Diorite. Batu Hijau is a world-class copper-gold deposit that has a drill indicated mineable reserve of 914 million metric tonnes grading 0.525 per cent copper (10.58 billion pounds copper) and 0.403 g/t gold (11.8 million ounces gold). Mineralised material not in reserve accounts for an additional 580 million metric tonnes at 0.328 per cent Cu (4.19 billion pounds copper) and 0.171 g Au/T (3.19 million ounces gold), and including an oxide copper resource of 57 million tonnes at 0.37 per cent Cu and 0.12 g Au/T. Copper and gold mineralisation is directly related to quartz veining and wall rock alteration that developed with multiple tonalite porphyry intrusions. The tonalites were emplaced along the contact between the andesitic volcaniclastic rocks and quartz diorite intrusives. Copper and gold are zoned around the porphyry intrusions, which are designated by their contact-age relationships and other features as Old Tonalite, Intermediate Tonalite(s), and Young Tonalite(s). The Old Tonalite was the first copper-bearing intrusion, and although it is the smallest intrusion it has the highest quartz vein density, the strongest alteration and the highest grade. At least two tonalite porphyry intrusions followed the emplacement of the Old Tonalite. Each of these intrusions was associated with less quartz veining, weaker hydrothermal alteration and lower grade copper and gold than the previous intrusion. The intrusive cycle culminated with the emplacement of the Young Tonalite, which contains relatively few quartz veins, is weakly altered and mineralised. Hypogene hydrothermal alteration and sulphide mineralisation developed in five temporally and spatially overlapping stages. These stages consist of Early, Transitional, Late, Very Late, and I Zeolite alteration. Early alteration and sulphide mineralisation accompanied each tonalite porphyry intrusion, but with diminished intensity in each subsequent intrusion. Transitional and later stages of alteration and mineralisation postdate the tonalite porphyries and overprint Early stage alteration and mineralisation. Early alteration and mineralisation consisted of biotisation, secondary magnetite and plagioclase development, fine porphyry-style stockwork veining and ore mineralisation. Magnetite-biotite????quartz stringers and dark micaceous (biotite-sericite) veinlets were developed. The veinlets were accompanied by biotisation of magmatic mafic minerals and groundmass. Thin, irregular and discontinuous æAÆ type quartz veinlets and fine-grained chalcocite, digenite and bornite mineralisation accompanies the Early alteration. It is hypothesized that most of the copper mineralisation was originally deposited as bornite, digenite and chalcocite. Secondary plagioclase was added along the selvages of the early quartz veinlets. Early alteration is pervasive within and proximal to the tonalite porphyries. In the distal portions of the deposit, andalusite and anthophyllite formed at intermediate to shallow depths, and in the deeper portions of the deposit, respectively. The andalusite and anthophyllite probably developed at the same time as the early magnetite-biotite-quartz alteration in the core of the deposit. Transitional-age alteration consists of oligioclase/albite-sericite-chlorite- quartz-¦vermiculite and is associated with æBÆ quartz veins. Through-going planar æBÆ veins are thicker than æAÆ and æA-familyÆ veinlets and have chalcopyrite????bornite along vuggy centrelines and narrow oligioclase????albite alteration envelopes. Rare æCÆ chalcopyite¦quartz veinlets were also formed during Transitional alteration. During Transitional alteration early copper sulphide minerals (chalcocite, digenite and bornite) are converted to bornite and chalcopyrite. The majority of the copper (50 - 70 per cent) in the deposit is contained in ores in which chalcopyrite is the predominant sulphide. Late alteration consists of feldspar destruction and replacement by sericite and other minerals. The late alteration is accompanied by the development of æDÆ sulphide veinlets and veins. These veins consist of pyrite and quartz????chalcopyrite. Within the halos of the late pyritic veinlets biotite is replaced by sericite, quartz-sericite, quartz-andalusite, or quartz-pyrophyllite+kaolinite replace plagioclase, and magnetite is converted to specularite and/or pyrite. In the periphery of the deposit, the feldspar destructive alteration, together with outer zones of Transitional-age alteration, constitutes what is commonly referred to as a æpropylitic zoneÆ. Very Late hydrothermal alteration is also characterised by feldspar destruction, but differs from Late alteration in that feldspar is replaced by smectite in association with sericite and chlorite. Sulphide mineralisation in this stage consists of sphalerite, galena, tennantite, pyrite and chalcopyrite. The last stage or I Zeolite alteration consists of low-temperature, open space filling consisting of stilbite or laumontite¦calcite. Supergene oxidisation of the orebody extends to a maximum depth of 210m. Isolated deep oxidation occurs along open fracture zones to depths of ~400 metres along æDÆ vein filled fracture zones. Weak supergene copper enrichment occurs in a thin horizon (15 to 60 m thick) that blankets the top of the deposit. The main supergene copper mineral is secondary æsootyÆ chalcocite replacement of sulphide grains and as veins.

Yet, mining is a complex and risky business: plenty of high risk factors can occur and severely affect nature and the miner?s life and health. Especially for small and medium enterprises (SME) risks may also threaten the economic existence of the company. The responsible and sustainable management of a company should thus be based upon the systematic finding and handling of risks or briefly upon an efficient risk management system. Why do we need risk management? Because nobody is perfect and we make mistakes in the normal course of operation.

The productive potential of the Nation's principal active and inactive silver mining districts has been evaluated, using 1964 economic conditions and assumed silver prices ranging up to $3 per ounce. On this basis, the United States has an estimated 5 billion ounces of unmined silver, excluding minor byproduct silver in gold deposits. Approximately 3.5 billion ounces are contained in deposits requiring higher silver prices to be economically minable, and about 1.3 billion ounces are in currently operating mines. An analysis of silver consumption trends since 1954 indicates that the free world industrial market will climb to nearly 800 million ounces annually by 1985. U.S. industrial silver consumption has been projected to increase at an annual rate of 4 percent from 1965 to 1985. Average annual increase for the remainder of the free world has been 8.1 percent since 1953; this is expected to level off with an estimated average increase of 5 percent to 1975 and 4 percent from 1976 to 1985. Foreign silver production has, in the past, exceeded consumption, but in 1960 the supply deficit was over 100 million ounces. U.S. production, also traditionally exceeding demand, was suddenly overtaken at the start of World War II. By 1964 the annual deficit, excluding coinage, was over 84 million ounces. World coinage requirements of silver are fast declining and expected to total only 25 million ounces annually by 1985. In fact, coins are already becoming major short-term source of silver to fill the large deficit between industrial demand and current production. The larger, long-term deficit (to 1985, the limit of this study) must be balanced by silver from the hoards and new production from silver deposits. Eventually all of the deficit must be met by new production or silver prices will rise until consumption is greatly curtailed. To balance free world supply and demand, it is estimated that the free world must produce an additional 85 million ounces by 1975 and 375 million ounces by 1985. The estimated proportion expected from U.S. deposits is 17 million ounces by 1975 and 74 million ounces by 1985.

The EVINOS-MORNOS tunnel project with its 30 km of length is one of the longest hydraulic tunnel in the world realised with TBM method. The adverse geological conditions, the high cover and the short construction schedule were a great challenge for the successful construction of this tunnel. The paper will describe: the criteria adopted for the tunnel design, the selection of the construction methods and equipment, the productions of the 4 TBMs adopted and the comparison of the behaviour of the different type of TBMs in the various rock conditions, including special conditions, the characteristics of the adopted in situ and precast linings, a comparison between the foreseen and actual construction schedules, the contractual implications of realising a tunnel in such a severe and complex conditions.

The development of a process for upgrading offgrade titanium metal by electrorefining in molten salt led to an investigation of the electrotransfer characteristics of selected metals when alloyed with the titanium to be refined. Previous tests on seven binary titanium alloys showed that the degree of transfer of the alloying constituent depends on the constituent and on the operating procedurese.5 This report describes tests on electrorefining ternary mixtures of titanium with selected metallic elements. Ten alloys were prepared from high purity titanium and 2-1/2 percent of each of the metal pairs selected from the same elements used in the binary study; manganese, vanadium, chromium, zirconium, tin, molybdenum, aluminum. Operating variables were similar to those investigated in the binary alloy study that gave minimum alloy metal transfer. The data presented indicate the transfer characteristics of the various metals and combinations tested relative to each other.
