Until the past decade, the energy-size reduction relationship was the dominant form of mathematical model used in the description of tumbling mill grinding processes (1,2). Typically, in these models some single measure of product fineness (e.g. the 80% passing size, the size modules, the specific surface area) is chosen as the dependent variable and the energy input per unit mass of material being ground acts as the independent variable. In some instances these models have been useful for the correlation of experimental data, but, invariably, they have been found to be inadequate for meaningful process simulation. During the last decade considerable advances have been made in the development of phenomenological grinding models derived from population balance considerations (3-7). In these models a set of dependent variables is employed, corresponding to the set of mass fractions which constitute the product size distribution, and energy input is abandoned in favor of "time in the mill" as the independent variable. The phenomenological models have been shown to provide accurate simulations of the entire size distribution of ground products produced in batch (8-10), locked cycle(11)and steady and unsteady state, open and closed circuit continuous grinding(12,13).

This paper describes the results of a digital computer simulation study in which the impact of the proposed truck dispatching on the overall mine productivity was investigated for an operating open pit mine. In the study, the existing operation was first simulated for a one-month period, using both the actual time study data and the computed cycle times. By adjusting certain input parameters to the simulation program, the actual one month production was first duplicated through simulation. Afterwards, the operation was again simulated in a dispatch mode. Comparison of simulation results under the dispatch mode, with the initial base case simulation results, showed a definite improvement in overall productivity with dispatching; i.e., approximately 10% gain for the operation. As expected, the results also showed that the extent of possible improvement did vary with the particular pit configuration being investigated.

The control of soils has been found to be one of the highest priority factors influencing the return of reclaimed prime farmland to production. The compaction of soil is primarily a result of the movement of high ground pressure wheel scrapers and dozers over soils during the soils replacement and regarding process and occurs to a maximum depth of about 1.2 m (4 ft) The deleterious effects of soil compaction can be controlled by deep soil loosening to a depth of 1.2 m (4 ft). Most farm tillage equipment can only loosen soils to a maximum depth of 0.33 m (1.0 ft). Deeper soil loosening equipment, in the 0.33-1.2 m (1.0-4.0 ft) range is currently avail- able in the U.S. and abroad which may have potential for application on reclaimed prime farmland. This study has appraised such available equipment and the results indicate that a few manufacturers in the U.S., West Germany, and England market static and vibratory soil loosening equipment which have potential for deeper soil loosening of reclaimed prime farmland.

The Carlin Gold Mining Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of Newmont Mining Corporation has been successfully operating an open pit gold mine and cyanide mill for approximately the past ten years. It is a unique operation in that about 20 percent of the mill feed is a carbonaceous ore refractory to cyanidation that must undergo a pretreatment stage developed for, and by, Carlin. The mine and plant are located in the Tuscarora mountain range is north-eastern Nevada near the towns of Carlin and Elko. Claims were staked at the minesite in 1961 and 1962. A drilling program was initiated late in 1962 and after drilling a total of 250,000 feet of rotary drill holes an estimated 9,300,000 tons of ore at a grade of 0.32 ounces of gold per ton was delineated.

Several years of rock-burst research conducted by the Federal Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the mining companies of the Coeur d?Alene Mining District, Idaho, in addition to progress made by others throughout the world, have led to a good understanding of the rock-burst problem. This paper describes conditions which have caused specific bursts, present capabilities of detecting stress buildup and bursts, control methods, and a suggested approach to analyzing any individual mine-burst problem.

AVAILABLE MACHINES Machines discussed in this section include only rubber tire mounted kerf cutting machines of a self¬propelled electrically powered design. Such machines handle bars up to 4.6 m (15 ft) in length, cutting kerfs of from 115 to 191 mm (4.5 to 7.5 in.). The basic design concept of all machines currently in production is very similar. The chassis features dual driving wheels on the cutter-bar end, fixed directly to the main frame. The steering wheels on the outby end of the frame are articulated in some manner to keep all four wheels on the floor over uneven bottom. Machine power for tramming, and all other functions except powering the cutting chain, is furnished from a pump motor that drives the specific pump or pumps required by a given machine. The cutter chain is driven through a mechanical drive train from a separate electric motor having no duty other than driving the chain. The general arrangement of a cutting machine is shown in Fig. 1; two types of machines, with their specifications are shown in Figs. 2 through 5. A hydraulically powered cable normally is included to eliminate the need for manual cable handling and make this a one-man machine. A bug duster, though optional, is needed for most applications. The bug duster is an hydraulically driven scroll conveyor located directly behind the cutter chain drive sprocket. Its function is to move the cuttings away from the sprocket to prevent them from packing up in this area and consuming a lot of machine power to further pulverize them. Available machines vary from models 610 mm (24 in.) high that can cut horizontally only from 203 mm (8 in.) below ground line to 229 mm (9 in.) above, to machines 1143 mm (45 in.) high that can cut in any plane from 178 mm (7 in.) below the ground line to 3.7 m (12 ft) above it. Most currently manufactured machines fall in the 17 200 to 20 400 kg (38,000 to 45,000 lb) weight range, but can be dis¬assembled for underground installation where weight and size are a problem. Maximum teardown results in all pieces having a weight of 5400 kg (12,000 lb) or less and a size allowing passage through a 1.2 x 2.1-m (4x7-ft) opening. Further reduction in either size or weight of the parts becomes a serious problem. Machines currently being manufactured are avail¬able for use with power supplies of 250 v dc; 500 v dc; 440, 550, or 950 v ac (60 Hz). Also available are machines for use on 415, 500, and 950 v 50 Hz. De¬signs to allow operation on other voltages of either 50 or 60 Hz can be made available without any serious problems. As of September 1977, a typical medium-seam ma¬chine without the extra options needed for unusual conditions, but fully equipped to operate, was selling for about $185,000. Introduction In response to industry needs and requests, Joy Mining Machinery is aggressively evolving a "game changing" system of underground development mining machinery. This entry-development system (EDS) project is concentrated on providing clean, protected and ergonomic operator areas and a quantum leap in productivity. To meet these goals, a virtually continuous and automated mining system is needed. Operators must be able to efficiently and ergonomically perform required functions from a protected environment. Health-related issues, such as respirable dust and noise, must also be addressed. A new concept system of integrated face equipment, from the continuous miner to and including advancing the section belt and services, is needed. Phase I of the project was aimed at developing the bolting technology required. Through acquisition of Cram Australia and joint development efforts with Canyon Fuel Co., Joy now has this capability. The test platform, known as the Joy Multibolter, has successfully completed its trials at Canyon Fuel's SUFCo Mine (Fig. 1). These tests validated the bolting technology and operator protection and ergonomic issues. Phase II includes the development and testing of an integrated mining machine (IMM) capable of advancing a heading 1.5 m (5 ft) while simultaneously cutting a fullface width (single pass) and installing a complete bolt pattern. The IMM, unveiled at MINExpo 2000, incorporates the bolting technology of the Multibolter with automated full-face cutting. This machine was designed to meet Joy's stringent health, operator protection and 300m/d (1,000-ft/d) productivity goals. Phases III through V will include development of processes and integrated haulage, ventilation, power, material handling and section services advancing equipment. Processes and equipment developed will be designed for seamless integration into a complete entry development system. The focus of this paper is the new continuous miner (IMM) development, proposed testing and expectations for the EDS. The IMM is scheduled for commissioning and trials beginning in April 2001 at the SUFCo Mine. SUFCo Mine Canyon Fuel Co. is jointly owned by Arch Western Resources and the Itochu Corp. of Japan. It owns and operates three coal mines in Utah: the SUFCo Mine in Sevier County, the Skyline Mine in Carbon and Emery Counties and the Dougout Canyon Mine in Carbon County. Incorporating state-of-the-art-mining technology and advanced mine management practices, the SUFCo Mine is one of the most efficient underground coal mines in the world. The SUFCo Mine is located approximately 50-km (30 miles) northeast of Salina, UT, in the Wasatch Plateau portion of the Uinta coal basin. The mine property consists of 9,900 hm2 (24,470 acres) with approximately 118 Mt (130 million st) of recoverable reserves. Public utilities and industrial concerns purchase approximately 95% of the coal mined at SUFCo through short- or long-term contracts. Coal reserves are extracted by longwall mining, and the panels are developed using continuous miners. The longwall face at SUFCo Mine is 283-m (930-ft) wide, and the seam height ranges from 2.4 to 4 m (8 to 13 ft). The two development sections are in full operation using Joy 12CM12 continuous miners. Two super longwall panels, under development in the northeast portion of the lease block, are 4,270-m (14,000-ft) long with a 283-m (930-ft) wide longwall face. Introduction Borne out of the need for reductions in capital expenditure and increased production, several new and innovative carbon systems have been developed for small precious metal heap leach operations throughout the United States. Perhaps the most important aspect of these systems is the carbon column. Though diverse in design, these columns can be categorized into three basic types. The first is known as the gravity flow type or Cortez type. As the name indicates, solution flows via gravity, throughout 4 to 6 columns which are arranged in a normally stepped con- figuration which is conventionally upflow in design. The second type, known as the vertical column, is an arrangement whereby flow is established through pressurization in an upward manner, throughout 4 to 6 columns in a vertically stacked configuration. This arrangement is typically intended for use with small portable heap leach operations and employs a semi-continuous mode thus preventing gravity from occurring. The third type and newest development in carbon columns is an arrangement whereby the solution flows throughout 4 to 6 columns placed in a side by side configuration and pressurized by a single feed pump (Figure 1). A unique aspect to the third type, is that the adsorb and desorb cycles are accomplished in the same column, due to a fixed carbon charge. An in-depth analysis is warranted due to numerous advantages of this arrangement, and is therefore the subject of this paper. Advantages and Variations One advantage to the third type of carbon column is the fact that initial capital expenditures and operating man- power requirements are reduced. Another advantage is that the system can be made fully portable up to a 0.0315 m3/s (500 gpm) capacity. Systems of this nature are operational at several sites. Above this flow rate, the system's portability is one which can be maintained, but disadvantages (i.e. larger diameter carbon column and greater weights) far outweigh the advantages. There are several variations in each of these systems which allow for unique operation. For example, carbon columns made highly portable, can be moved from unitized heap leach operations to central stripping facilities. Although this method has been used in Colorado, transportation of these units has been known to be quite cumbersome. If distances exceed 5 km (3.2 miles) then special front-end loaders are required. This limits heap locations to within 5 km (3.2 miles) of the central processing facility. Another example transports the carbon charge from the heap leach locations to a centralized processing facility; this method is quite effective. For the past 5 years one mine has employed this technique of transporting carbon in 907 kg (1 ton lots), in DOT containers, towed by company pick-ups. This operation uses a vertical column with a 907 kg (1 ton) carbon charge. A third example uses static carbon columns with fixed carbon charges. Carbon Adsorption System The carbon adsorption system (Figure 1) is fed by a single preg solution feed pump. This feed pump pushes the preg solution through all four to six fixed charged carbon columns, which are on line. The sequencing of the carbon columns is achieved using valves. Expansion of the carbon charge is dependent upon the carbon selected. The carbon typically used is a 6 x 12 mesh size, with a nominal flow rate of 0.00135 - 0.00138 m 3/s (22-25 gpm) per square foot of carbon, based on a 40% bed expansion. With 8 x 16 mesh size,

In a long term toxicology study SPF, F-344 rats were exposed 6 hours/day, 5 days/week for up to 24-months to a special test toner at 0, 1 (low), 4 (medium), and 16 (high) mg/m3, or Ti02 at 5 mg/m3, or Si02 at 1 mg/m3 by the inhalation route. The test toner was composed of about 90% random, high molecular weight acrylic copolymer and 10% high purity, medium color, furnace type, carbon black. It was enriched in fine particles such that the respirable aerosol concentrations (ACGIH) were to 0, 0.35, 1.4 and 5.6 mg/m3. There were no effects of exposure on survival, causes of death, body weight, food consumption or clinical chemistry and hematology parameters. There was no evidence for systemic or upper respiratory system toxicity as all of the changes were restricted to the lungs and associated lymph nodes. The lung tumor frequencies in the control (air and Ti02) and toner exposed groups were comparable. There were no changes at the low exposure level, which is the most relevant in regard to potential human exposures. The lung changes at the high exposure level consisted of decreased alveolar clearance, increased toner retention, increased lung weight, chronic inflammation, decreased pulmonary function and a moderate degree of focal fibrosis in all animals. The changes in the middle exposure level were smaller in magnitude than at the high level, and a very slight degree of fibrosis was found in 20% of the animals. In a follow-up investigation, female F-344 rats were exposed to one of three toner concentrations; control, low (10 mg/m3) or high (40 mg/m3) for 13 weeks followed by five, 13 week observation intervals. At the low exposure level, slight clearance retardation and modest inflammatory changes were observed at the end of exposure. They returned to normal values within six months post-exposure. In contrast, at the high exposure level, increased lung weight, decreased alveolar clearance and a disproportionate increase in toner retention, as well as an inflammatory response, were noted, which persisted throughout the post-exposure interval. While no significant histopathological changes were noted at the end of exposure, a very slight degree of fibrosis was observed in all of the animals in the high exposure group, after 65 weeks of observation. All of the above alterations are ascribable to "lung overloading", a generic response to excessive amounts of any dust retained in the lungs for a prolonged time interval. Published accounts in the toxicology literature document that long-term inhalation of large quantities of even innocuous particles such as Ti02, carbon black, petroleum coke, toner, and other polymeric and insoluble materials has resulted in a spectrum of generically similar pulmonary changes. Scaling of the rat-data, using 1 mg dust/g of lung as a threshold for "lung overloading", normal ventilatory parameters and 300-500 day human retention halftimes project "lung overloading" upon long-term exposure to insoluble respirable dust above 0.2-0.33 mg/m3. Other types of information are consistent with an exposure limit in the range of 0.4-1.0 mg/m3 for respirable dust. The absence of definitive toxicology data in support of the current OSHA respirable nuisance dust limit, coupled with the lack of sound epidemiology data, indicate the need to reexamine the validity of the current nuisance dust health standard.

Introduction The US coal mining industry is in the midst of a serious economic crisis. To overcome increased operating costs, operators must take advantage of technological advancements in mining systems and equipment. A relatively new concept available to underground operators is that of extending the cutting depth for continuous mining machines (continuous miners). This system is referred to as deep-cut mining, and may be described as mining cuts to depths greater than the standard 6 m (20 ft). Productivity is increased through the reduction in continuous miner tram time since the machine stays longer in each working face. To successfully implement a deep-cut mining system, three problems must be overcome: Exposing personnel to unsupported roof, methane removal, and controlling respirable dust. Remote control cutting The solution to the unsupported roof problem is remote control. Recent advances in remote operation, especially in radio remote controls, have resulted in what is generally accepted as a safe and reliable tool. By installing remote control on the continuous miner, the operator and helper can now be stationed in a supported area. This allows for improved visibility while cutting coal. With this in mind, the limiting factor now becomes the position of the haulage equipment operator. North River No. 1 uses Joy 21SC shuttle cars and Jeffrey 4110 diesel ramcars. These cars are pulled against the bumper of the continuous miner. Thirteen meters (43 ft) can be cut with the shuttle car and 14 m (45 ft) with the Ramcar before the operator of the car is inby permanent supports. By loading away from the bumper, about 1.5 m (5 ft) can be added, bringing total cut depths up to 14.5 and 15 m (48 and 50 ft), respectively. Methane removal The second problem involves methane removal, and the line curtain-to-face distance. In other words, how to maintain the line curtain to allow sufficient ventilation to remove methane and not expose workers to unsupported roof. The solution, in most cases, is to use a blowing-type ventilation system. Unlike the exhausting system that, to be effective, must be installed within 3 m (10 ft) of the working face, the blowing system can be effective at greater distances from the face. Numerous studies have documented the advantages of a blowing-type ventilation system over an exhausting system. Furthermore, a blowing system can be significantly improved by in¬creasing the velocity of the air delivered without increasing the volume of air. With this greater ventilation efficiency, it is possible to secure ventilation plan approval from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) for a greater curtain set-back distance. This eliminates the need for personnel to travel inby permanent supports to extend the face brattice. The distance from the face MSHA will approve, however, is on a mine-by-mine basis. MSHA will evaluate the particular mine's face methane liberation rates, along with the specific proposals regarding face ventilation volumes and velocities. Dust control The third problem is controlling respirable dust. This is actually a result of the solution to the second problem. In the blowing system, while mining on the slab cut, both the continuous miner and haulage units are located on the dusty side of the line curtain (Fig. 1). In the early 1970s, underground operators virtually abandoned this system, in order to comply with the 2 mg/m3 (0.87 gr per cu ft) federal dust standards. The iron and steel industry continues to operate at depressed production levels due to the low level of demand for steel and foundry products. Crude steel production in the Western world dropped by 13.7% from 459.3 Gt (506 billion st) in 1981 to 396.4 Gt (437 billion st). The reduction was particularly severe in North America where the industry suffered a loss of 37.3% from 123.6 to 77.5 Gt (136 to 85 billion st). This reduced level of production severely affected iron ore and agglomerates output. Substantial curtailment was made in both sintering and pelletizing plants to meet reduced demand. The pressure on these plant operators shifted from quantity to quality. With energy cost becoming an ever increasing part of production costs, conservation was a major area of emphasis. Iron Making Sinter has continued to be the favored burden for blast furnaces overseas. As hot metal production declined and excess sintering capacity developed, many of the overseas operators that have been using pellets found it advantageous on hot metal production cost to increase the ratio of sinter at the expense of pellets. This was the case despite the depressed price level of pellets in the world market. In North America where pellets have been the predominant burden material-mainly because it is necessary to pelletize the fine grain iron ores available domestically-there was also increased interest in sinter usage. Bethlehem Steel Corporation's 13.6-m (44.5-ft) furnace at Sparrows Point experimented with a burden with more than 70% of sinter during the second half of the year and indicated some favorable results as compared to its previous 50% super flux sinter and 50% acid pellet burden. The blast furnace operators continued to press for improved burden quality. In addition to the emphasis on the importance of burden chemistry and quality, uniformity, much emphasis was placed on improving reducibilitiy and high temperature metallurgical qualities. These burden properties were recognized to hold further promise in reducing fuels rates. Sintering With reduced consumption caused by the cutback in hot metal production, many sinter plants sat idle while others operated at greatly reduced rates. The deemphasis on production in many plants allowed them to experiment with various means to reduce operating costs. The most notable action was the introduction of low cost South American pellet feed fines into the sinter ore mix. These feed fines, which are finer than 150 µm (100 mesh) ore, were previously thought to be too fine for sintering. However, when the full production rate is not required the use of up to 40% in the ore mix was reported to be successful with the aid of burnt lime and adequate premixing and granulation of the sinter mix before sintering. The emphasis on quality and tighter cost control also has resulted in a further breakthrough in sintering technology. It was recognized that good feed preparation-including selection of compatible ores, good blending, good pseudo-particle formation, additive size control increased bed depth, and closed control of the sintering bed heat pattern-could allow the production of high quality sinters with much lower heat input and FeO level. Bed depth of more than 600 mm (23.6 in.) was practiced in a number of operations. Total heat input of better than 1.3 GJ/t (290,300 kcal per st) has been achieved. Almost 100 sedimentation ponds were conceptually designed for a large surface mining study area in northeast Texas. An approximate procedure was developed to economically estimate construction quantities in order to predict surface water control costs. This procedure utilized site-specific empirical relationships developed from detailed analyses on a representative number of proposed sedimentation ponds. Use of these equations provided earthwork volumes, and spillway pipe lengths. The procedure developed for this study is presented along with the results of a verification analysis.

The trend in the coal industry for many years has been to make everything "bigger and faster" This also held true for loading and storage facilities. Where once a million ton per year mine was rare, three to five million ton per year mines are not uncommon today in the bituminous industry. This greatly increased production, made possible through mechanization, required greatly improved loading facilities just to get the coal away from the mine. Also, there is a trend toward combining production from more than one mine and cleaning it in a single preparation plant. In addition to increased loading capacity, this frequently necessitates raw coal storage and blending facilities. The development of the unit train, more than any other factor, has contributed to the widespread construction of storage and high-speed loading facilities for clean coal. In the export market, the construction of ever larger coal bulk carriers has contributed to a need for faster and larger loading facilities at ports. The present engineering and construction cost of these larger facilities make it essential that the flow and handling properties of the particular coals are fully known. These properties can be measured well in advance and the proper design criteria established. This eliminates costly surprises later on during start-up and operations. This paper will review coal and coal refuse properties, such as shear strength, cohesion, friability, and the flowability of coal and how they affect the design criteria of storage silos.

The Groveland deposit, in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, consists of an E -W trending overturned syncline of Middle Precambrian Vulcan iron formation. At Groveland, the Vulcan formation can be divided into four units or facies. The total succession may be more than 550 feet thick, and consists of a basal unit composed of a lean chemical quartzite with traces of magnetite; a non-banded, partly clastic unit characterized by the preponderance of hematite over magnetite; a transition unit of well-banded magnetite-bearing iron formation interbedded with non-banded oolitic hematite; and a well-banded magnetite-quartz silicate unit at the top of the exposed sequence. The present magnetite-hematite ratios of different units within the orebody are considered to be a primary (post-diagenetic) feature of the original sediment. Subsequent regional metamorphism has increased the grain size of the original iron oxide minerals, but did not appreciably alter the oxidation state of the original sediment.

In southwest Wyoming lies buried the world's largest source of natural sodium carbonate, or soda ash. Perhaps a hundred billion tons of trona (sodium sesquicarbonate) are contained in ancient lake beds in the Green River basin'). There the Green River Formation encloses more than 40 extensive beds of trona. At least 25 of these exceed 3 feet (1 meter) in thickness and most of them are more than 300 square miles in extent. Five have been exposed in mines and lie between 800 and 1500 feet below the surface. Others lie at depths of from 400 to 3500 feet. Three companies have underground mines that supply trona to adjacent soda ash plants. These are the FMC Corporation, Allied Chemical Corporation, and Stauffer Chemical Company. A fourth, Texasgulf Corporation, has a mine under development. In 1974, annual soda ash capacity in the Green River area was approximately 4,300,000 tons, which requires the mining of about 7,500,000 tons of trona.

The history of mine safety legislation in this country is also a history of mine explosions. Nearly every piece of safety legislation that has been introduced or amended has resulted from some type of a disaster. When coal was first discovered and mined, it was extracted from along outcrops. As the coal became depleted near the surface, underground mining developed. When the first mine penetrated the outcrop, a great number of problems developed, many of which remain with us today. One of those problems is the potential for mine ignitions and explosions. Naturally, when underground mining progressed a few feet into the outcrop, some type of artificial light was needed. Early accounts of mining in Spain, Italy, Japan, and Great Britain indicate that torches served to light the mines. Later, candles were used, and still later, earthern oil lamps containing fish oil were used. As workings got deeper, explosions began to occur. When one did occur it was thought to be the work of goblins or the devil. As explosions became more frequent, it became very obvious that the use of open flames for lighting was very dangerous. A substitute was sought. Dried fish skins which gave off a weak phosphorescent light were tried. A mixture of flour and lime made from oyster shells called Canton phosphorous was also tried unsuccessfully. Fireflies in a bottle were also used.

Typical operations necessary to develop oil and gas reservoirs are reviewed, including exploration, drilling, cementing, completion, work over, sand control, stimulation, enhanced recovery and production. One responsibility of a manager is to improve his human organization. Some executives believe a manager should be measured and compensated accordingly on the basis of his ability to improve the quality of his human organization. Officials in the coal mining industry have had a tough road to travel in this regard due to fluctuating coal production demands, contractual obligations, and improved mining equipment and methods. The time may have finally arrived when we are able to recruit, select, and develop men from the labor market to fill vacancies, This is particularly true of our maintenance organizations. Because of the importance of this responsible function and the types of skills required, we must develop an extensive improvement pro- gram. Anyone in the industry who fails to undertake a manpower audit and who accepts a philosophy which will not permit collective planning, organizing and con- trolling the improvement of the human element throughout his maintenance organization may certainly cause deterioration within his company.

Investments in new technology are often intended to improve the production or cost performance of existing operations. The economics used to justify these projects can be flawed, however, if they do not adequately consider the potential benefits of the alterative: the fully optimized use of the facility's present equipment and personnel. While new technology can be effective, dramatic improvements in production performance can also be achieved through the rigorous application of standard industrial engineering and operations management practices. An intermediate approach may also be effective: many basic improvements In the mine or plant necessary to support new technology will be equally effective when implemented for the facility's present operators. Firms who optimize their present operations are able to save the capital and avoid the risk associated with new technology. These firms will also be able to capitalize more quickly on new technology when it is implemented.
