The current application of copper-molybdenum (Cu-Mo) separation inhibitors is often associated with large dosage, high toxicity, environmental pollution problems. In order to solve these problems, a light sensitive Cu-Mo separation inhibitor LS（light sensitive inhibitor，abbreviated to LS） was developed. In this paper, inhibitory performance, photodegradation rule, and acting mechanism of LS were studied. The subsequent test results showed that, compared with traditional inhibitors, LS has shown comparative advantages, with lower dosage and good inhibiting effect. A series of flotation tests with LS as inhibitor were conducted on a Cu-Mo concentrate. A locked-cycle test showed that a molybdenum concentrate containing Mo 49.88% and Cu 0.6%, with 93.23% molybdenum recovery and a copper concentrate containing Cu 29.92%, with 99.99% copper recovery can be obtained. The photodegradation performance of the reagent was investigated under 365 nm, 254 nm and sunlight irradiation. The degradation of the reagents could be completely achieved by irradiation of three wavelengths of light. However, with the different wavelength of irradiation light, the degradation rate is different, the time required to reach 50% degradation rate being 3 h (254nm), 4 h (solar light) and 6 h (365nm) respectively. The inhibition mechanism on chalcopyrite was studied. FTIR study showed that LS could be adsorbed on the surface of chalcopyrite by chemical adsorption, which could enhance the hydrophilicity of chalcopyrite. Ultraviolet adsorption tests indicated that the adsorption capacity of LS on chalcopyrite surface was greatly affected by pulp pH value, and the proper pH value was 5-9. Each mining project goes through the same life-cycle, from prospecting and exploration to closure and post-closure periods. This prompts the question whether the closure of a mine constitutes the end of its life-cycle or whether the decommissioned mine can be employed for some other purpose. Best-practice references indicate that there are many viable options. In our opinion, the production of service water is one such option. Laboratory research was carried out on the water from a flooded underground coal mine in Ostrava- Karviná coal district, Czech Republic, concerning the production of service water from pumped minewater. The research proved the practical feasibility of service or process water production. Given the effect of global climate change with regard to water resources, good prospects for this additional resource can be assumed since the water has to be pumped in any case for safety reasons.

The utilization of computer assisted tomography (CT or CAT-scan)as general non-destructive examination (NDE) technique and as research tool for scientists in South Africa, is limited due to the relative unavailability or nonexistence of such specialized analytical equipment. Many medical hospitals are equipped with X-ray CT scanners for the diagnostic examination of patients but do not easily allow paleontologist or other scientist to utilize their very expensive equipment. As from 2003, Necsa hosts the South African Neutron Radiography (SANRAD) and tomography facility where neutrons from the SAFARI-1 nuclear research reactor and their penetrating power as well as X-rays as a complementing tool, are utilized in many R&D applications. This facility is being made available to HEI and specifically utilized by postgraduate students as part of their studies and/or by industry on an ad hoc commercial basis. The capability of these radiation imaging facilities at Necsa will be demonstrated in areas such as paleontology, geosciences and specifically the physical properties of rock and the distribution of minerals in borehole cores, petrophysics to predict the percentage tar/oil/water content within sandstone samples and others. The penetration capability of neutrons through specimens with a matrix of high atomic number (dense materials) and their ability to be attenuated by low atomic number material (light density) makes neutron imaging complementary to X-ray imaging. The capability of X-ray and gamma radiation for relatively easy penetration through specimens of low atomic number allows for viewing of imbedded high atomic number materials and density variation. X-ray micro focus radiography is capable of resolving objects of micro scale size that are micro distances apart whereas X-ray phase contrast radiography utilizes the wave properties of the electromagnetic spectrum of X-rays to clearly define edges of the specimen under investigation. Many applications with neutrons as imaging probe are successfully applied at several facilities across the globe such as at NIST in USA, Neutra at PSI in Switzerland, and ANTARES at FRM2 in Germany, etc, are documented 4?9, through world conferences on neutron radiography, for example. This is achieved through very well thought through and implemented instrumentation from the production of neutrons to their detection and interpretation of the images. The need arose at Necsa to upgrade the current facility from 42-year-old technology, which was successfully applied in neutron imaging over the past 10 years, to state-of-the-art technology found at European facilities. This initiative started under the auspices of an IAEA-TC programme for the period 2007?2010.

The Southern African region contains abundant gold tailing heaps that are an environmental concern due to dust pollution and chemical contamination of nearby water bodies. Nevertheless, these heaps contain gold with potential to be extracted for financial gain. In this study, the feasibility of extraction of gold from a Witwatersrand gold tailings using glycine was investigated using a two-level full factorial design. Effects of variables such as glycine concentration at levels of 0.5–1.5 M with a solid–liquid ratio of 50–200 g/L were investigated. Although the solid–liquid ratio used in this study was below the industrial norm, it provides a starting point for investigating the applicability of this technology. To enhance the gold extraction, potassium permanganate pretreatment and copper ion addition were adopted. The results revealed that 91.4% gold extraction was achieved after 24 h pre-treatment of the tailings using 2 g/L potassium permanganate followed by subsequent leaching using 1.5 M glycine at pH 12, with 50 g/L solid–liquid ratio and 2 g/L copper ions. Statistically, the solid–liquid ratio and potassium permanganate pre-treatment of the tailings were found to be significant at 95% confidence interval, whilst interactions of copper ions and glycine concentration were significant factors. The work demonstrates that potassium permanganate pre-treatment prior to glycine leaching of low-grade secondary gold resources, such as tailings, can be beneficial. Furthermore, the methodology developed in this work provides an opportunity for further investigation of the recovery of gold hosted in complex mineralogical matrices.

'Increased underground extraction of coal' was the theme selected for the 1981 mining vacation school, which was held at the University of the Witwatersrand in January and February. The response of the industry to the invitation to register was so good that three separate schools of one week each were arranged between 26th January and 13th February. In terms of the total number of delegates, some 225 actually attending, the school can be described as the most successful ever organized by the Institute.

A range of supported gold catalysts was prepared by ion exchange, varying many of the preparation variables, including concentration in the precursor solution, washing procedure, as well as drying and calcination procedures. These catalysts have been characterized extensively. TEM images show essentially the same crystallite size distributions, between 2?5 nm, for almost all catalysts, the only exception being catalysts not washed in ammonia, which did not show any small crystallites. Additional characterization with SEM yielded an interesting discovery. Catalysts that appear identical on the TEM also contain some large crystallites in the range of 50?500 nm. Differences in dispersion due to the drying procedure not seen on the TEM can now be observed. Oxygen chemisorption is being investigated as an additional method to characterize gold based catalysts to complement the typically used electron microscope techniques.

The residues from mining and processing ores can often be considered as secondary raw materials. However, the material is only available in the form of fine particles (< 3 mm). In order to recycle these wastes, it is necessary to agglomerate it for transportation prior to reprocessing. The resulting agglomerates need to mechanically resist the stress of transportation and loading into the furnace. X-ray computed tomography (CT) is an established method for characterisation of internal structures in material science. This non-destructive technique can provide information on size and distribution of particles and grains. However, the information is not limited to the size, but also can yield structural features like orientation and position of cracks and fractures, which are important features indicating potential for deteriorating the agglomerates. Furthermore, deduced features such as contact conditions of inclusions or boundary surfaces can also be calculated. We studied binder-free tablets of manganese-oxyhydroxide, bentonite, kaolinite and slag powder using micro-CT. Inclusions of highly absorbing particles were identified using a watershed transformation with automatic segmentation by Otsu thresholding. Subsequently, the resulting data was analysed regarding their volume percentage, distribution in size and location within the sample. For the slag agglomerates, the volume fraction of iron could be determined. Furthermore, visible cracks were investigated with the goal to determine the long-term durability. It was shown that the data provided by micro-CT is reliable and helpful for the characterisation of industrial waste agglomerates. The magnetic field characteristics due to electromagnetic stirring in the secondary cooling zone of an extra-thick slab during continuous casting are numerically determined using Maxwell's equations, with particular emphasis on the distribution of magnetic induction intensity and electromagnetic force, as well as the influence of process parameters on the magnetic field. The orientation of the electromagnetic force is the same when the electromagnetic stirrers at the 30° and 60° posistions of the arc-shaped slab are powered in the same direction; otherwise, the orientation is opposite. The magnetic induction at the centre of the section of the stirrer's central axis at the 30° positio, as well as the current, frequency, and fitting formulae, are as follows: B = {0.075I.(1/A)-0.3} mT and B = {-1.75f.(1/Hz)+22} mT. The electromagnetic force and current fitting formula at the central point of the B-B section is F = {0.03168I2.(1/A2)-03.762I.(1/A)+326.7} N/m3, and the fitting formula of electromagnetic force and frequency at the centre point is divided into two segments. The first takes the form of a parabola: = {-21((f-4.3).(1/Hz)2)+970} N/m3, and the second segment is negative linear: F = {-1.65f.(1/Hz)+51.5} N/m3.

He was ably assisted by Jens Lichterof Allis Mineral Systems, who described some interesting examples of pilot-plant testwork and summarized South African milling practice. The free ligand (FL) model is an intuitive model to calculate the equilibrium concentrations in solvent extraction (SX) based on the distribution coefficient (Kd) at infinite dilution and the fraction of free ligand available for extraction. In this work, the FL model is validated to account for co-extraction of Ni and for designing the extraction and scrubbing sections of Co/Ni separation in a base metal refinery. Cyanex 272 is employed as a selective Co extractant in the process to yield high purity Ni. To enhance the loading capacity of the extractant, 50 mol% of NaOH is pre-loaded into it. Experimental and FL modelling results show that four equilibrium stages are required to purify the 99% Ni feed to a 99.97% Ni raffinate. The 53.59% co-extract with 26.76% free ligand is purified with a reflux scrub of 30 g Co/L in one equilibrium stage to 99.01%, Co in the scrubbed extract. The FL model as well as the Co/Ni/Na-analysis of the aqueous phase confirm that in the scrubbing section, Ni in the extract is mainly replaced by Co. Finally, in the one stage stripper the Co concentration in the scrubbed extract is increased from 5.6 g Co/L in the extract to 30.5 g Co/L that is partially used as reflux scrub liquor.

The Northern Cape Province in South Africa has high levels of annual direct normal solar irradiance and reserves of zinc (Zn) ores. The question arises as to the benefits of integrating renewable solar energy into the beneficiation routes of these reserves. The paper evaluates a novel flowsheet for the production and beneficiation of Zn in this region, maximising localised solar energy as a source for both electricity and process heat. Solar variability is discussed and the cost and benefits of thermal storage in the flowsheets are evaluated by its influence on the levelised costs of electricity and process energy over the project life-time at a possible implementation site. The results of the developed scoping model showed that solar photovoltaic integration to provide electricity for electrowinning without battery storage can lead to more than 10% cost saving on electricity over the lifetime of the project. Additional savings potential was identified when battery storage was included to enable the solar PV system to supply electricity during peak tariff periods. The solar thermal case showed the most promise with savings of 70% on heating costs for casting, while solar PV electricity without storage resulted in a 16% cost saving on heating for casting over the lifetime of the project. Solar PV electricity generation resulted in the avoidance of more than 20% of CO2 emissions from grid electricity use. Solar thermal heating can avoid up to 80% of the CO2 emissions associated with grid electricity use for remelting of Zn cathodes for casting. It has been found that the MnO content of a slag decreases sharply when direct current is applied to a 1T1£tal-Slagsystem consisting of liquid Mn-Si-Ccsat metals and MnO-SiO2-CaO-AI203 slag in graphite crucibles. This paper reports a preliminary investigation into the electrochemical effects of direct current on the metal-slag system, the silicon content of the metals, and the MnO content of the slag. The results show that, when a direct current of 7 A is maintained, the MnO content of a metal containing 10 to 11 per cent silicon by weight is reduced rapidly from 26,5 to 17,2 per cent by weight. This reduction seems to proceed further when the process is continued. When the direct current and the voltage are kept constant at TA and 4 V respectively, the MnO content of a metal containing 1 to 2 per cent silicon by weight is reduced to 1 from 25 per cent by weight, which results in a manganese yield of 96 per cent.

This paper presents a modelling tool that can be used to predict the behaviour of solvent extraction processes. In particular, this model allows calculating metal extraction efficiency as a function of pH, solvent flowrate, stripping flowrate and aqueous feed flowrate in the mixers-settlers. This paper was presented at the Coloquium on Management Techniques in the Mining and Metallurgical Industry, which was organized by The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and held in Pretoria during June 1988. The author asks whether technical audits are of any use to management. Technical auditing he defines as an evaluation undertaken by an outsider of whether a technical activity is being carried out correctly. After examining the types of technical auditing, and its prerequisites and procedures, he describes its application in regard to quality, and to production processes and their adequacy. He then answers his question by saying that, not only are technical audits very useful, but they form an essential element in the provision of quality products. In addition, they give management the opportunity of testing whether the activities of the organization are being conducted correctly. This is their most important function in that they alert management to areas of potential growth, modernization, and innovation. However, the use to which technical auditing is put remains the key to its value; that is, its value depends on the positive action that each manager takes as the result of a technical audit.

The reprocessing of tailings resources to extract gold on an industrial scale has become common practice. While these projects are common in the Witwatersrand basin, similar low-technology processes are not operational in smaller goldfields. This study explores the possibility of reclaiming the tailings dump of the Louis Moore Mine in the Giyani Greenstone Belt, investigates potential hazards to communities in the vicinity, and identifies mitigation strategies. Auger samples were taken from the Louis Moore tailings at depths of up to 5 m. Aqua regia leach analyses show Au concentrations of up to 1 g/t. Inferred estimations based on ordinary kriging (OK) and inverse distance weighted (IDW) methods put the residual Au resource in the Louis Moore tailings dump at 0.20 t. Reworking the tailings is viable, although a potential environmental risk exists in the form of elevated arsenic concentrations. Further exploration is required to determine the mineralogical associations of Au and As. Tailings reworking would assist in raising funds for mine rehabilitation. The secondary tailings could potentially be repurposed, which would provide employment and facilitate community development, as well as deliver environmental benefits.
