Natural gas was first stored underground in Welland, County, Ontario Province, Canada, in 1915.3/ The following year natural gas in the United States was first stored underground successfully in the Zoar field near Buffalo, N, Y. Only three additional storage fields were in use in the United States in 1930, but by 1940 the number had increased to over 30, and since that time growth has been more rapid. At least 80 fields, with a combined storage capacity of 440,828 MM c. f ., were being utilized by 1949.4 / In May 1952, 142 storage projects having a capacity of 915,000 MM c.f. were in operation .5/ These fields are distributed from New York to California--from Michigan to Texas. In the Appalachian region alone, there are 101 storage fields with a combined capacity exceeding 526,000 MM cu. ft. Why Natural Gas is Stored Natural gas is stored in order to be readily available to meet the needs of consumers.

A recently completed survey , made by the Bureau of Mines to determine the trend of fuel consumption at refineries in the United States , showed the following outstanding points : A decrease in the use of oil for fuel in 1927 of over 5,000,000 barrels as compared with 1926 ; a decrease in the use of coal of over : 1,000,000 short tons ; small increases in the use of both natural gas and refinery gas ; an increase in the use of petroleum coke . The decrease in fuel - oil consumption was approximately 2,000,000 barrels each in the Atlantic Coast , Texas , and Louisiana- Arkansas districts , with an increase of 1,000,000 barrels in the Indiana - Illinois district , or a net decrease of 5,000,000 barrels . The decrease in fuel- oil consumption by refineries in the Texas and Louisiana- Arkansas areas was offset largely by increased consumption of natural gas and refinery gas , whereas the increased consumption in the Indiana- Illinois region was more than offset by the decrease in coal consumption . The use of coal for fuel declined from 6,052,000 short tons in 1926 to 5,031,000 short tons in 1927. Practically all of this decrease was recorded in the Appalachian and Indiana- Illinois districts , which at the same time showed the largest percentage increase in the use of oil for fuel . It is probable , therefore , that although coal prices also fell off , a considerable quantity of oil replaced coal in this area in 1927. In addition , the group of refineries , which are by location more or less definitely committed to the use of coal for fuel , undoubtedly succeeded in saving a material amount of coal through the use of more efficient fueling methods . A total of 130,815,000,000 cubic feet of natural gas was consumed for fuel at refineries in 1927. This represents an increase of 8 per cent over the 1926 total . Nearly all of this increase resulted from the opening of a line from the Monroe field to Baton Rouge , La . Had this line not been opened , there would have been a decrease in the use of natural gas , as a number of districts , particularly the Rocky Mountain , reported decreases in its use . The use of refinery or still gases for fuel did not change materially during 1927 , there being a total of 52,807,000,000 cubic feet burned as compared with 52,077,000,000 cubic feet in 1926. Refinery gases are largely a product of cracking and , it was probably more than a coincidence that a few districts in which cracking slowed down in 1927 also reported less refinery gas used as fuel .

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report summarizes Federal mandatory belt conveyor automatic fire suppression system installation requirements and inspection procedures, identifies system failure modes observed during in-mine investigations, and suggests system design and maintenance upgrades which, if implemented, would result in an improvement in overall system reliability. This report is a compilation of recommendations based on discussions with Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) inspectors, review of manufacturer's literature, discussions with mine personnel, and research investigations of automatic fire suppression system performance in the laboratory and in mines. The Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) requirements for installation, inspection, and maintenance of fire suppression systems should be regarded as minimum standards.

The annual survey of the fuel-briquet industry by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, revealed that 21 fuel-briquet plants in 11 States were in operation and reported production in 1956. The demand for fuel briquets in the United States has gradually declined since 1948, and the number of operating plants has decreased from 36 to 21. Also, the annual productive capacity of the industry has decreased, although not a proportionate amount because most of the plants that were abandoned were small and in most instances had a designed capacity of less than 25,000 tons per year. In 1956 the 21 active plants had an annual capacity of 3.7 million tons (table 2), which was only 20 percent less than the total capacity of the 36 plants in 1948. This indicates that most of the larger plants have remained active, even though operating at reduced rates, and the average capacity of the industry has increased from 130,000 tons per plant in 1948 to 177,000 tons in 1956. Since 1948 operating rates have decreased from 67 percent to 41 percent of annual capacity.

In small-scale blasting experiments conducted in the Bureau of Mines laboratory, small charges were used to produce craters in blocks of concrete mortar. The results are compared with larger scale experiments of other research workers, and the comparison demonstrates the similarity of the results obtained and indicates that small-scale blasting should be a useful tool for predicting large-scale blasting effects. INTRODUCTION The purpose at this investigation was to conduct blasting experiments in mortar in the laboratory and then, by comparing the results with those from larger scale field blasts in rock to determine to what extent, if any, the laboratory results resemble those in the field. The work described herein was the initial phase of a project aimed at evaluating small-scale blasting as a tool for use in improving blasting techniques. It is evident from the stand-point of control and cost that small-scale blasting would be valuable in the study of rock fragmentation by blasting in mines and quarries, if the extrapolation is valid.

This report, the 22d in a series, gives analytical data showing composition and quality of tipple and delivered samples of coal collected during fiscal year 1972. This coverage lists mines located in 20 States. Ultimate analyses are given for most of the coalbeds listed. Tipple samples were collected by Bureau of Mines engineers at tipples as coal was being loaded into railroad cars or trucks. The deliveries were sampled in accordance with instructions issued by the Bureau of Mines, and the samples were analyzed in the Bureau laboratory at Pittsburgh.

The Copper King copper-gold-silver deposit was discovered about 1880. Various individuals and companies have been interested in the deposit and considerable work has been done, although production, if any, has been small. The deposit is located in the western part of Laramie County, Wyo., and is favorably situated with respect to rail and truck transportation and high-tension power facilities. Mild summers and cold winters characterize the climate. Precipitation averages between 16 and 17 inches annually, with considerable snowfall in the winter. Permanent streams are small and most available water in being stored for use by Cheyenne, Wyo. Range grasses comprise the bulk of the vegetation, with small trees and shrubs common in the most rugged areas.

The U. S. Bureau of Mines has investigated the domestic primary and secondary lead smelting and refining industries to determine the economic impacts of existing and proposed environmental, health, and safety regulations. The impacts are assessed in terms of capital and operating costs for existing and alternative smelting/ refining technologies. Industry response to regulatory implementation is estimated and quantified in terms of import value from lost lead production. For the primary lead industry, regulatory compliance may add up to 1.15 ¢/lb refined lead to operating cost for rehabilitated plants. Alternative smelting/refining methods could reduce net operating costs by as much as 4.36 ¢/lb refined lead. Capital expenditures would vary from $750 to $1,000 per annual mt of smelter capacity. Secondary lead smelter operating costs would increase about 3.8 ¢/lb refined lead to comply with existing regulations. Capital expenditures would average about $124 per annual mt of smelter capacity. Implementation and enforcement of proposed regulations would result in closure of the primary lead industry and additional expenditures for compliance by the secondary lead industry. Enforcement of the most extreme proposed regulations would force the secondary lead industry to close.

Mathematical expressions are derived for the histories of the pressure, flame radius, mass fraction burned, and burned and unburned gas temperatures associated with a spherical flame propagating concentrically in a spherical vessel. The equations are solved numerically for a 9.5 pct CH4/air mixture using the best available information for the burning velocity, expansion ratio, and specific heat ratio. Calculated histories are in complete accord with experimental measurements. The accuracy of calculated histories is determined relative to errors in the system parameters, and it is found that 10 pct errors in either the burning velocity or the expansion ratio results in a 40-pct error in the pressure history. A 10-pct error in either burned or unburned specific heat ratio results in a 22-pct error &apos;in the pressure history. It was further established that the usual assumption of constant specific heat ratio is unacceptable, but equating the burned and unburned specific heat ratios result in no apparent error in the histories. The cubic law (P = Kt3 + Po) is derived and discussed, and it is found that the law is valid only during the early period (P<2 atm) of flame growth.

Fault tree analysis is a systematic safety analysis tool that proceeds deductively from the occurrence of an undesired event (accident) to the identification of the root causes of that event. One recurring mine safety problem—a dozer falling into a void over a drawpoint on a coal surge pile—was analyzed using available, inexpensive fault tree programs on a personal computer. The analysis identified basic and intermediate events that led to the burial of the dozer and graphically depicted the interrelationship between these various subordinate events as well as the various chain of events leading up to the primary event. A sensitivity analysis on these probabilities showed which events had the greatest influence on dozer burial in a coal surge pile.

Since its inception the United States Bureau of Mines has fostered the development of portable mine lamps. Although there is still much to be desired with respect to illumination in coal and metal mines and the replacement of open lights has been slow the Bureau has been given credit for assisting materially in the development and introduction of the safe and efficient portable mine-lighting equipment available today. Much of the work conducted by the electrical section of the Bureau entails approval tests of various types of electrical equipment, including lamps; to be used in atmospheres that may contain methane or coal dust in explosive proportion. If a can lamp meets the requirements-for safety, efficiency, and adequacy, as published in Schedule 6B,4 it is approved and is generally known as a "permissible" lamp. The terms "approved" and &apos;"permissible&apos; often are used interchangeably. The manufacturer must put an approval plate on each approved lamp, showing it has mot the schedule requirements. The approval plate is not a guarantee that the lamp is safe. However, if the lamp, once in service, has not had any parts changed or improperly assembled or if carts that wear out or depreciate have been properly replaced it should still, be safe, efficient, and adequate for the service intended. Virtually all electric cap lamps in service today in the United States and a great many that have been sent to foreign countries bear the approval plate of the United States Bureau of Mines. Although many explosions have been attributed to open lights none has been charged against the permissible cap lamp. Nystagmus, a disease of the eye attributed to working under insufficient illumination, is practically unknown among; American miners, although it is quite prevalent among European miners.

As an aid to studies of grinding, a batch laboratory classifier and elutriator has been developed at the U. S. Bureau of Mines Metallurgical Field Office at Moscow, Idaho, in cooperation with the University of Idaho. It is designed for use in conjunction with other batch laboratory apparatus, such as ball mills and flotation machines. It is shown in Figure 1. Description and Operation of Batch Laboratory Classifier The classifying column is a cylinder 4 feet 2 inches long, of 5 3/4-inch inside diameter, and terminates at its top in a cone or funnel 18 inches in diameter at the overflow elevation. The pressure chamber is of the same diameter as the classifying column, and has a conical bottom; it is provided with two openings, one in the cylindrical portion through which water is admitted, and the other, a small drain hole, in the apex of the conical bottom. The two compartments are bolted together and communicate with each other through the medium of a constriction plate provided with 3/16-inch holes spaced 1/2 inch apart. Constriction plates having any other percentage of opening may be substituted as the needs demand water is admitted to the compartment below the constriction plate at constant pressure. The volume of eater admitted is controlled with a valve. It should be mentioned that the classifying column at the bottom, just above the constriction plate, is glass.

"This study reports a new property of the important NAD(P)H-dependent flavoenzymes, glutathione reductase, lipoyl dehydrogenase and ferredoxin- NADP oxidoreductase, that can catalyze a one electron reduction of metal ions such as chromium(VI) and vanadium(V). During the enzymatic reduction process, molecular oxygen is reduced to H2O 2 , which reacts with the reduced metal complexes to generate hydroxyl radicals. Since the hydroxyl radicals have been suggested to play an important role in Cr(VI) toxicity, this study provides a basis for a recent observation that Cr(VI) mutagenesis is strongly oxygen dependent. These results also point to an enzymatic pathway for the metabolism of some metal ions and concomitant generation of hydroxyl radicals. l. INTRODUCTIONThe purpose of this communication is to report that some important NAD(P)H-dependent flavoenzymes (glutathione reductase, lipoyl dehydrogenase and ferredoxin-NADP+ oxidoreductase) can catalyze one electron reduction of metal ions such as chromium(VI) and vanadium(V) and simultaneously reduce molecular oxygen to generate Hi02 and, eventually, the ""OH radical. This finding is significant because (i) the known substrates for the flavoenzymes are organic species and not metal ions, and (ii) the report on the enzymatic formation of the ""OH radical provides a new pathway for understanding the mechanism of genotoxicity of some non-ferrous metal ions. For example, it has been suggested that OH radical is likely to be the major species responsible for Cr(VI) genotoxicity [1-5). The 'OH radical is generated through the reaction of Cr(V) complexes with cellular Hi02 [4,5]. Cr(V) itself is known to be generated from Cr(VI) in various biological systems, in particular, microsomes [ 6), mitochondria [7] and mitochondrial electron transfer chain complexes [8]. However, no specific enzyme responsible for the Cr(V) generation has been identified except possibly glutathione reductase [4]. In this study we have used ESR and spin trapping techniques to show that the flavoenzymes can generate Cr(V) and provide a catalytic redox cycle for 'OH formation in such reactions. The Simon & Coles manganese deposit in Sherman Valley, Bedford County, Pa., was investigated by the Bureau of Mines during the fall of 1942. Two churn-drill holes; 65 and 75 feet deep were bored, and 8 channel samples were taken. Manganese occurs at this property in the form of psilomelane and manganiferous iron as replacement of the red sandy shale of the Much Chunk-formation. Two cars of manganese ore had been shipped by the owners in 1940, of which one averaged 10.9 percent manganese and the other 21.3 percent manganese. One car of hand-sorted manganese ore that averaged-45 percent manganese was shipped in 1942.

This volume summarizes the contract work performed over a nine-month period by Westinghouse Electric Corporation on a Cost Plus Fixed Fee Contract for the Department of Interior&apos;s Bureau of Mines. The contract has been extended primarily to carry out improvements recommended for equipment produced under the contract for communicating with and locating trapped miners. These improvements will enhance the performance and utility of this equipment for operational use in actual mine emergencies. An additional complete set of the equipment will also he furnished to the Bureau under this extension. The work of the basic contract was to design, produce and test hardware in accordance with the Westinghouse response to a Bureau of Mines Request for Proposal which was based technically on recommendations of a study performed for the Bureau by the National Academy of Engineering (NAE). A gas volumetric method was developed for determining metallic aluminum at the 0.01-to 0.3-percent level in 100-gram samples of recycled glass. The method is based on the measurement of the change in gas volume produced by the reaction 2 Al + 2 NaOH + 2 H2O ? 2 NaAl02 + 3 H2 using a simple apparatus assembled from readily available glassware. Apart from sampling errors, the precision of the method is within ±5 percent. A minor modification of the apparatus would extend the method to larger samples or samples of higher metallic aluminum content. Metallic iron and metallic zinc do not interfere at the concentrations found in recycled glass recovered from incinerator residues.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has developed a computer-assisted Ground Control Management System (GCMS) for near realtime evaluation of underground coal mine ground conditions. The GCMS combines existing mine-monitoring system and sensor technology with automated computer analysis techniques to enhance the acquisition, analysis, and display of geostructural data. The GCMS, which combines mine structure data with other information, such as geologic conditions and mine layout, has provided information on mining-induced stress transfer and pressure buildup associated with several ground control events. The GCMS collects and analyzes shield-leg pressure, ground pressure, and strata movement data to evaluate the structural behavior of an active Western U.S. Iongwall coal mine. Field data are transmitted over a dedicated phone line to the USBM Denver Research Center (DRC) mine monitoring laboratory, 240 km (150 miles) from the mine site. Real-time collection, processing, and analysis of mine structure and shield pressure information has proved to be an effective method for near-face ground conditions while mining progresses. The GCMS provides the mine operator with information to rapidly identify and manage potentially hazardous ground conditions while mining is in progress.
