Aluminum boron carbide particulate reinforced composites have found new applications in nuclear industry due to their special capability to capture neutrons, Recently, Alcan successfully developed a liquid metal mixing process to fabricate Al¬B4C metal matrix composite instead of powder metallurgical technology. In the process, titanium is added into the composites to control interactions between boron carbide particulates and aluminum matrix, To understand the effects of titanium on the composites, the solidification microstructure of Al-16%B4C without or with titanium was examined by optical and electron microscopes. The results show that titanium can improve the uniformity of the particulate distribution within aluminum matrix if the titanium content in the composites is more than 0,5%, Furthermore, it is found that the layer with rich titanium on the surface of the particulates can limit the formation of AlB2 type compounds, which may greatly deteriorate the fluidity of the composites, In addition, it is also found that the amount of the reaction products in the composites increases with the increase of holding time. However, the rate of the increase is mitigated by the increase of the content of titanium in the composites. Besides, a procedure was proposed and implemented for the evaluation of uniformity of particulate distribution within aluminum matrix.

The numerous factors associated with the prov1s1on of satisfactory air conditions in hot and humid Canadian mines are described. The main heat sources are auto-compression and the actual flow of heat from the rock. Temperatures reach 97°F at a depth of 8,100 feet. Various methods used in coping with high temperatures are described, including the use of ice stopes and heat exchangers. Moisture control, desirable air volumes and velocities, sizes of airways and methods of distribution are important considerations. A comparison of the temperatures, humidities and types of airways of two deep mines should prove useful in the design of future ventilation systems. Introduction OUTDOOR temperatures in northern Ontario vary from a low of around -40°F in winter to a high of about +90°F in summer. The average annual mean temperature over a 12-year period was +35°F, with a summer mean of 54 o and a winter mean of 16°. Because of low outdoor temperatures, a number of northern mines must heat fresh air for underground ventilation in winter; others, with high rock temperatures, are faced with a year-round cooling problem.

THE mines of the Consolidated Copper and Sulphur Company, consisting of the Eust1s, the Albert, and the Capel mines, are situated w Ascot township, Quebec, about ten miles southeast of Sherbrooke, on the main line of the Quebec Central railway. Of these mines, only the Eustis is now producing, and it has been operated almost continuously for the past seventy years. Mining methods have been improved in recent years but are still old fashioned when compared with those employed in more modern and up-to-date mines. The ore is of milling grade and is mined for its copper and sulphur con-tent. Silver is present in small quantity, together with a trace of gold. The ore is mined by the shrinkage stope method. Pillars are frequently left as supports for the hanging-wall to prevent serious dilution of the ore and are sometimes recovered after the ore is drawn from the stope. Occasionally, small blacks of ore in close proximity to the shaft are mined by a cut-and-fill method. HISTORY ALBERT AND CAPEL MINES: The Albert and the Capel mines, originally known as the Capelton mine, were discovered in 1863 by George Capel (1). By the end of 1866 the Albert shaft had been sunk to a depth of 121 feet on an incline of about 30 degrees where a vein five feet thick was encountered. In 1879, these mines passed into the hands of G. H. Nichols and Company, by whom they were operated practically continuously until 1907. When mining operations ceased in that year, the shafts had reached depths on the incline of approximately 2,300 feet and 1,000 feet, respectively. These mines have been allowed to cave and fill with water and have been inaccessible for many years.

"SAG mill liners are designed for protecting the mill shell and providing lifting power for ore charge and grinding media. Due to the impacts from the charge and the grinding media, the liner experiences dimple, plastic deformation, strain hardening, fatigue, peening and final failure. Because of the collisional environment directly measuring such dynamical loads is extremely difficult if not impossible. In this study we tried to evaluate the liner failure risk by simulating the collisions of solid particles with mill liner using Discrete Element Method (DEM). DEM simulation has been proved to be a very useful tool in evaluation of granular flow and its impacts on the solid structure. But there are certain limits in DEM coherently, such as the number of solid elements, the computer runtime, etc. Here we first present the general feature of the particle-liner collision in terms of impact force and collision energy. Then the effects of parameter selection is discussed. Our simulations show the fatal collisional event of huge impact force is very rare and the collisional events of low impact is much more frequent. The fatal event may contribute most to the liner failure. The rarity of the fatal events may be missed in a short runtime simulation. This technical challenge combined with lacking of criterion to evaluate varying impact loads in fatigue problems may further complicate the evaluation. Should we use the largest impact force alone or we should use the more frequent events is an open question and requires more effort. In order to evaluate the quality of liner design, we proposed a relative comparison method. In the end we show the implication and application of this method in liner optimization by a work example. In particular, the effects of the charge level of grinding balls and their size on the operation performance is presented.INTRODUCTION Grinding is one of the most important and expensive steps of mineral processing. A variety of grinding mills such as rod mills, ball mills, semi-autogenous (SAG) mills and autogenous (AG) mills are being utilized for comminution of mineral ores (Gupta & Yan, 2016). Up to today, SAG mills and AG mills have been widely used to reduce operation costs and increase throughput. In an AG mill, a rotating drum throws larger rocks of ore in a cascading motion which causes impact breakage of larger rocks and compressive grinding of finer particles. Unlike AG mills, SAG mills use steel grinding balls to break ores of size quite small such that they cannot be easily broken in AG mill. SAG mill liners are designed for protecting the mill shell and providing lifting power for ore charge and grinding media. Due to the impacts from the charge and the grinding media, the liner experiences dimple, plastic deformation, strain hardening, fatigue, peening and final failure. Quality and performance of SAG mill liners play a fundamental role to enhance efficiency of grinding mills, because failure of liners is the major cause for unexpected breakdown (Banisi, Hadizadeh, Mahmoudabadi, & Eilkhany, 2006)."

Acid mine drainage (AMD) is a serious environmental problem that preoccupies the Canadian Mining Industry. Considerable amounts of money are spent every year in an effort to prevent or reduce the acid mine drainage phenomenon. AMD occurs when sulphide minerals (ex. pyrite) contained in rock are exposed to air and water and subsequently oxidize to produce low pH water. This acid effluent has the potential to mobilize any heavy metals contained in the rock. Coating the sulphide minerals with silicates is a new promising technology to reduce AMD. Pyrite is treated with a solution containing H2O2, sodium silicate and a buffering agent. H2O2 oxidizes a small part of pyrite producing ferric iron (Fe3+) ions. These ions subsequently react with the silicate ions to produce ferric hydroxide-silica that precipitates on the pyrite surface producing a passive coating. This silicate coating can protect the grains of pyrite from oxidation. This paper presents a series of experiments that confirm that silicate coating can considerably reduce AMD.

"Mining towns have always been an important part of Canadian geography. Many Canadians grew up in them. The frontiers of northern Canada would be a lot closer to the United States border but for the pioneering of new mines, new towns, and new transportation routes. Names such as Labrador City, Chibougamau, Val d’Or, Rouyn-Noranda, Kirkland Lake, Timmins, Sudbury, Red Lake, Thompson, Flin Flon, Yellowknife, Whitehorse,Trail and Kimberley are some of the better known larger communities that have grown to become major commercial and government centres, but which started as the base for a mining development.Many other smaller towns never grew beyond being small communities, dependent upon the local mine and many of these are still alive, but perhaps not quite what they used to be. In this list would be Buchans, Schefferville, Chapais, Cadillac, Virginia town, Lynn Lake, Uranium City, Pine Point, and Keno Hill.Nevertheless, all these towns and dozens more like them were residential communities where people lived and raised families and were quite accustomed to being days from the major centres of Montreal, Toronto, Edmonton and Vancouver, and not just hours away as wet end to measure travelling time today."

Continuous development of technologies has been self-explanatory for Outokumpu Technology's engineers for decades. The aim in the development has always been the improvement of profitability of the copper production but also the sustainability of the processing i.e. high copper recovery, low external fossil based energy utilization, high emission captures and of course low operation and investment costs. Outokumpu Technology's long-term view of the development is a change towards continuous processes and elimination of number of unit operations in smelting i.e. elimination of possible sources of emissions. Outokumpu blister smelting processes i.e. Outokumpu Direct-to-Blister Flash Smelting and Kennecott-Outokumpu Flash Converting have shown excellent operational results during the years of operation and it is expected that soon more than 10 % of the world primary copper is produced by these technologies. The paper will give some background of this development trend.

This paper deals with the exploration, development and current operations of the salt mine at Goderich, Ontario operated by the Sifto Salt Division of Domtar Chemical Limited. The rock salt is obtained from a bed 1,760 feet below the surface, 75 feet thick, extending under Lake Huron. Annual production is in excess of one million tons. Large mobile equipment is used. Details of this equipment, as well as the shaft layout, which permits the equipment to be lowered underground with a minimum of trouble are outlined. Mining, crushing and screening procedures' are rev1ewed. Reference is also made to productivity salt distribution and uses.

The Eagle zone is a gold-bearing, sheeted, quartz vein porphyry deposit hosted by the Cretaceous Dublin Gulch biotite granodiorite stock, located in central Yukon, 50 km north of Mayo. The deposit occurs at the western end of the stock and has been drill tested over a 1000 m by 500 m area, to a depth of 150m. Mineralization consists of 1 cm to 2 Cm wide, parallel, grey and white quartz veins with accessory gold, arsenopyrite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, native bismuth, bismuthinite, and scheelite. Vein densities range from two to fifteen veins per metre and average approximately five per metre. The majority of the veins have potassic and or phyllic alteration envelopes. Alteration of the granodiorite becomes pervasive as vein densities increase. Mineralization outside of the Eagle zone, but spatially related to the Dublin Gulch stock, includes: (i) scheelite bearing sheeted quartz vein zones within the east-central portion of the stock; (ii) a swarm of gold-bearing quartz-sulphide veins up to a metre wide in a zone along the northern contact of the stock and extending 7 km further west; (iii) the Mar scheelite skarn located on the south side of the stock; and (iv) cassiterite-bearing breccias located 2 km north of the stock. A geological potential resource of 64.5 Mt tonnes at a grade of 1.03 g/t Au has been estimated for the Eagle zone from widely spaced core and reverse circulation drill holes. Mineralization is open at depth, on strike to the west and beneath the hornfels to the north.

"This paper deals with the methods used by Quebec Cartier Mining Company in the evaluation and selection of new haulage equipment and in increasing the productivity of the existing fleet.Selection of new equipment is based upon the comparison, for each model under consideration, of the capital investment required and the estimated operating costs and production rate. The calculation of the production rate is based on a widely used estimating procedure. Actual operating conditions considered in the method include: payload, haul distance, road grade, rolling resistance, loading and dumping times, and operational efficiency. A digital computer is used to handle the large volume of repetitive calculations required. Where a fleet of haulage equipment includes trucks of different size and performance characteristics, the problem exists of assigning each truck type to the different working locations to minimize total cost. Linear programming can be used in the solution of this problem."

Electric arc furnace dust or EAF dust is considered as a hazardous waste but contains a significant amount of economically attractive non-ferrous metals especially zinc as zinc ferrite (ZnFe2O4) and zincite (ZnO). The hydrometallurgical process is one alternative choice because it has the advantage of low energy consumption. The leaching of ZnO from the dust is very easy. However, the complex major zinc compound in EAF dust is ZnFe2O4, which is very stable and insoluble in alkaline or acidic media under delicate conditions, and causes the low zinc recovery yield by hydrometallurgical process. Moreover, halogens and heavy metals in the dust are also problematic. In order to develop a new effective EAF dust treatment process, the authors have proposed "CaO addition process" as pre-dust treatment to transform all of ZnFe2O4 in the EAF dust to ZnO and Ca2Fe2O5. In this study, the selective zinc leaching from the CaO treated EAF dust with NaOH and NH4Cl solutions was carried out. The effect of temperature, reaction time and solute concentration were systematically investigated. All of zinc in CaO treated EAF dust was successfully leached into both solutions.

"Yara Siilinjärvi in Finland is the Western Europe's only apatite mine. Annually it produces one million tons of apatite concentrate, which creates 10 million tons of tailings. At the beginning of 2017, Yara replaced their conventional TSF with a new tailings treatment plant, which increased the solids content of the slurry from 45–48% to 66–68%, making it possible to deposit as a paste. This extended the life-span of the current TSF from 2020 to 2035. This paper presents the storyline of the Yara paste plant project. The project began with laboratory testing and then progressed to pilot-scale thickening and beaching trials. After successful pilot trials, the final process design was implemented. Process automation played a key role in the project. An advanced control system is needed to maintain process stability and the desired operation point in various operational circumstances. Since commissioning the paste plant has been running consistently with an underflow solids content of 66-68%, with average beach slope angles of 3.5 degrees in the tailings disposal area. Robust thickener operation also leads to the trouble-free high-density pumping and high availability of the plan. During first year of operation the plant’s availability has been very good, over 97%, and currently, the plant is operated remotely from the main concentrator plant.INTRODUCTION The Yara Siilinjärvi Plant is owned by Yara International, a Norwegian fertiliser company. Yara Siilinjärvi is Western Europe's only apatite mine, and it primarily produces apatite concentrate for its Siilinjärvi phosphoric acid plant. A portion of the concentrate is also dried and shipped to other Yara fertiliser plants. The site annually produces one million tons of apatite concentrate, which creates approximately 10 million tons of tailings. Extending the lifespan of the 1150-hectare tailings storage facility has been studied in Siilinjärvi for a long time. The aim has been to use the same tailings area footprint, without any new land purchases or major dam increases. An important part of the process has been to study the possibilities for using new technologies, especially thickened tailings technology (Ruhanen, 2014)."

"Abstract -The Kipawa yttrium-zirconium prospect is located about 150 km south of Noranda, Quebec . Yttrium-zirconium mineralization occurs in an elongate, regionally metamorphosed and deformed peralkaline complex in the Grenville terrain. The mineralized zone, as defined by ? 0.10% Y203, is 1300 m long and 10 m to 30 m wide. Zirconium content typically ranges from 0.50 to 1.20% Zr02. The mineralized zone strikes northwest and dips 20 degrees to 35 degrees to the southwest. It occurs at the structural base of the peralkaline complex in syenite gneiss and cale-silicate rocks and is conformable with both the footwall contact of the complex, and the layering and gneissosity in the enclosing rocks. Minerals of economic interest are eudialyte (sodium-zirconium silicate), mosandrite (sodium-titanium silicate), britholite (calcium-silica phosphate), and a few other uncommon zirconium and titanium silicate minerals.The highest and most continuous yttrium grades occur in the upper part of the syenite gneiss unit in areas containing eudialyte, mosandrite and rninor britholite. Yttrium also occurs in britholite in cale-silicate rocks and in mosandrite in syenitic rocks in the lower part of the syenite gneiss unit. Both the yttrium-bearing minerals and yttrium grades are erratic in the lower part of the unit. Zirconium is generally more uniformly distributed than yttrium. A peralkaline granite gneiss phase of the complex intrudes the syenite gneiss and possibly truncates it, and the mineralization, near the southern boundary of the mineralized zone.The mineralized zone is coincident with a radiometric anomaly and discontinuous yttrium and zirconium soil anomalies.More drilling and metallurgical studies will be required to determine the economic viability of the yttrium and zirconium mineralization at Kipawa."

On November 16, 1978, Finance Minister Chretien delivered his second formal budget in the House of Commons. Over-all, the provisions of the budget should provide moderate stimulus to the Canadian economy. With respect to the mining industry, the budget offers some welcome changes in the form of' improved write-offs for development expenses and social assets; higher investment tax credits; and a reduction in federal sales tax. On the other hand, income bond financing of new mineral ventures may be restricted.

A simple, easily constructed apparatus suitable for the zone refining of iron and other reactive materials is described. After eight passes at one inch per hour, the iron produced showed a marked drop in hardness to 49 Brinell. In addition, an arbitrarily -defined recrystallization temperature was lowered by about 35°C and the rate of grain growth greatly increased. CERTAIN materials, of which iron is one, are so reactive that they cannot be zone refined in any known container without becoming contaminated. For such substances, the floating zone method ( 1) may be used. In this method, the specimen is supported vertically in an inert atmosphere and the molten zone supports itself by its own sur-face tension. The method was first applied to silicon (2) and has since been used for other reactive metals such as zirconium and titanium. On the afternoon of Saturday, June 23rd last; there was an unusual occurrence at the surface plant of the Dominion Coal Company's Caledorria mine, Glace Bay, which operates on the Phalen seam, here lying at a depth of 170 feet from the surface. On that day, the writer, who was attending a business conference in the General Office about a mile distant from the Colliery, received a telephone call to the effect that there was a strong odour of gasoline or kerosene in the wash-house and lamp-house of the Colliery, and that the attendants in both the wash-house and the lamp-house had become ill and had had to be sent home. Instructions were given at once to cut off the electric current, and to close all doors to prevent access to the building. When the writer arrived at the plant and questioned the workmen, he was led to the belief that the gasoline tank in the lamp-house (used in connection with flame safety lamps) had leaked and that the gas, having volatilized, had displaced sufficient oxygen to cause the trouble. Emphasis was being placed on the kerosene, or, as some said, the gasoline, odour. In the lamp-house, there is a small shuttered window which opens on a corridor. Here the workmen receive their lamps from the lamp attendant. An examiner, with a flame safety-lamp, proceeded to test the atmosphere within the building by passing his lamp through the open window, since, if the trouble was due to volatilized gasoline, a gas cap would be shown on the flame of the safety-lamp. After holding the lamp for a few seconds inside of the window, he withdrew it and remarked, "There's no gas cap" . Almost immediately the lamp fell from his hand and he dropped unconscious to the floor of the corridor. The writer, who was standing beside him, felt no ill effects and removed him at once from the corridor. Steps were immediately taken to revive him ( artificial respiration) , and in about ten minutes he became conscious and was breathing naturally. In making the examination, his head was not inside the window, but in line with the frame of it. It was apparent that some gas more deadly than the hydrocarbons from gasoline was present.

"Corrosion monitoring is commonly used in a variety of industries as a means of effective corrosion control programs to extend the life of the asset and ensure safe operation of the facilities. The majority of the monitoring tools have limitations and tradeoffs – e.g., sacrificing the longevity of the probe for higher measurement resolution. Linear polarization resistance (LPR) probes have the advantage of providing the operator with accurate, real-time corrosion rate data; however, the probes can only be deployed in conditions where the measured environment possesses certain minimal conductivity. In many instances, utilization of LPR probes in conditions with intermittent wetting (for example, conditions where the temperature fluctuates above and below the dew point) presents a challenge. To address this limitation, a special-design cooled corrosion probe has been developed, commercialized and integrated into the distributed control system in the plants. In addition to high-accuracy measurement of corrosion rates, the probe allows for monitoring of pitting corrosion. The most innovative feature of the probe is the cooling circuit, which brings the temperature of the sensors below the dew point, forcing precipitation of moisture and thus permitting corrosion measurements. Additionally, the probe was found to be well-suited for monitoring corrosion in crude distillation unit (CDU) overhead space, where condensation of hydrochloric acid may take place at relatively high temperatures, which would require relatively moderate amount of cooling to be imparted to the probe sensors. This paper presents laboratory-based data from a test simulating CDU refinery environment. A case study is presented to demonstrate how the cooling probe can be effectively used in the plants for corrosion monitoring.INTRODUCTIONConventional corrosion-monitoring techniques such as weight-loss coupons to assess corrosion damage are commonly used in plants1. However, the use of coupons is not only labor-intensive, but also does not deliver real-time corrosion data, thus effectively serving as a “backwards-looking” monitoring tool. Mining dilution is one of the most important factors affecting the economy of mining projects. Ore losses and dilution are present at all stages of mining and while several models can investigate the influence of dilution it is its quantification that poses the most serious challenge (Pakalnis et al., 1995). This paper introduces a methodology to quantify dilution factor in open pit mines. The proposed approach makes use of general mining software available in most mining companies. Therefore it is amenable to most mining operations and provides a readily available tool for understanding mining dilution for operators and consultants. To illustrate the methodology the author uses an example from a hypothetical mine. Dilution increases the operating costs in the mill by increasing the tonnage of material to be milled. In addition to its direct impact on short term income of a mine, dilution causes significant changes in other factors that on the long term reduce the overall value of the project. For example, it prolongs the mine life by reducing mill?s effective capacity. It also reduces the feed grade. In most cases, lower feed grade means lower mill recovery. Dilution also increases the cut-off grade which in turn reduces the overall ore utilization of a mine. In some cases, to take advantage of economies of scale, mining operations tend to plan for higher mining rates. Moving to a larger scale of operation means less selectivity, hence more dilution. This is true for all kind of deposits. High level and uncontrolled dilution may ultimately defeat the purpose of increasing production rates. If not impossible in theory it is nevertheless extremely difficult and expensive to eliminate dilution in practice. Some amount of dilution is practically unavoidable in most mining operations (Scoble and Moss, 1994). Although completely avoiding dilution may be impossible, we can measure and control it. By better understanding the root causes of the dilution and planning accordingly, it can be controlled and reduced. While we do our best to identify and calculate all the other cost items of a project, no matter how small, it is common to make general assumptions about dilution instead of quantifying it. It is common to assume a general dilution such as 5% for massive deposits and 10% for tabular shape deposits. While these figures may be a good starting point in early stages of mining studies, it does not take in to consideration the complexity of the problem. Dilution factor varies within a single mine for different benches and zones. This is due to changes we see in grade distribution and shape of ore body. It also varies based on commodity price. It is necessary to make sure that these variations are taken into account when designing or evaluating a mine. Dilution varies in different mines based on the deposit characteristics, operational aspects and economic cut-off grade. For instance, shape of the deposit, bench height, equipment size, and market conditions will have an impact on the level of dilution in a mine. It is paramount for mining projects to have a better understanding of dilution right from the beginning. In times like today, where mining operations must operate at peak efficiency, it is even more crucial to be able to calculate and have a better grasp of all the parameters influencing the economics of a project including dilution. In order to produce better project evaluations, dilution studies should be an integral part of any project.
