"A heptapeptide library displayed on M13 bacteriophages (phages) was screened to identify peptide sequences able to selectively bind to gold, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, pyrite, and silica ores, and to evaluate phage potential as bioflotation reagents. Many peptide sequences were isolated through biopanning and differed from known sequences. Adsorption isotherms were determined and a receptor/ligand interaction model was identified and used to compare affinity of peptide sequences toward ores. Some phage sequences have slightly lower affinity to sphalerite than other sulphides. Adsorption was higher on sulphides than on silica. Induction time measurements suggested filamentous M13 phages lower hydrophobicity of the ore surface.RÉSUMÉ Une librairie d’heptapeptides présentés sur des bactériophages M13 (phages) a été criblée afin d’identifier les séquences peptidiques affinitaires à des minerais d’or, de chalcopyrite, de sphalérite, de pyrite et de silice et d’évaluer le potentiel de ces phages en tant que de bio-réactifs de flottation. De nombreuses séquences peptidiques ont été isolées par bio-criblage et différenciées d’autres séquences connues. Des isothermes d’adsorption ont été déterminées et un modèle d’interaction récepteur–ligand a été identifié et utilisé pour comparer l’affinité des séquences peptidiques par rapport aux minerais. Certaines séquences de phages possèdent une affinité légèrement inférieure pour la sphalérite comparativement aux autres sulfures. L’adsorption sur les sulfures était plus élevée que sur la silice. "The Rabbit Lake uranium deposit is located at 58° 11’00”N.. 103°42'36""W., close to the west side of Wollaston Lake, and approximately 800 km north of Saskatoon. The orebody is hosted by Aphebian Wollaston Group rocks, initially deposited as a series of shallow-water marine sediments consisting, in part, of carbonates and possible saliferous petites. Metamorphism during the Hudsonian Orogeny, peaking at about 1850 Ma, recrystallized the sediments to upper amphibolite grade paragneisses. This was accompanied by partial anatexis. The waning stages of Hudsonian orogenesis appear to be marked by minor granitic intrusive activity.The post-Hudsonian period was marked by a long interval of physical and chemical erosion, resulting in the unroofing of the Wollaston metamorphic complex. The entire region underwent extensive lateritic weathering under tropical to subtropical conditions. Carbonates were especially vulnerable and, in the Rabbit Lake area, suffered extensive solutioning with accompanying formation of collapse breccias. Old zones of weakness also underwent periodic reactivation.It was during this period that uranium was leached from the surrounding meta-sediments by oxidizing meteoric waters, and transported into the karsted and fractured rocks of the Rabbit Lake doline.Athabasca Group sediments eventually covered the deposit, their diagenesis taking place at about 200 °C and 900 bars. This allowed the partial to complete recrystallization of the initial mineralization, resulting in a minimum age of 1281 ± 11 Major ""first""-generation pitchblende. Periodic fault/fracture reactivation modified the hydrologic regime within the deposit, resulting in episodic mobilization and recrystallization of pitchblende and other uraniferous species. This is clearly shown in the open pit at the present time: uranium is being mobilized and recrystallized on damp pit walls as bayleyite and liebigite due to the modification of the hydrologic system by mining activities.The uranium mineralization occurs mainly as fracture fillings, coatings, and impregnations within breccia zones and intensely altered metasediments. Lesser mineralization is intimately associated with phyllosilicates which form the matrix of a carbonate-col/apse mega-breccia. The primary ore mineral is pitchblende, consisting of five generations, and from which a large suite of secondary uraniferous minerals have formed. On a gross scale the metal content of this deposit appears to be simple, consisting almost exclusively of U, but minor Ni, As, Cu, Se, Fe and Co are also present. The eastern limit of the mineralization is defined by a vertically-dipping microgranite dyke - breccia complex, containing high-grade uranium values. The orebody is truncated to the west and at depth by the Rabbit Lake reverse fault. Minor mineralization occurs as fracture fillings in unaltered plagioclasite in the footwall of the ore body. Precipitation of uranium from solution could have taken place by a number of processes. A mobile reductant (methane, carbon dioxide, etc.) may have been generated from graphite present in some of the host rocks of the orebody. Sulphides are also a common accessory and may have aided in the formation of a reducing environment. Phyllosilicates may have acted as adsorbants for uranium, allowing for its fixation. This metal has also been incorporated into the phyllosilicates themselves."

"SINCE the .Canadian Chemical Company has no direct connection with mining operations, and I have had no experience with mining, there is little I can tell you that you do not already know. However, we have had considerable experience with certain types of metallurgical problems and I would like to discuss with you some of these problems and their solutions by our metallurgists.In order to acquaint you with the type of plant and processes to be employed at Edmonton, I would like first to take a few .minutes to trace briefly the history -of the Canadian Chemical Company's affiliate, The Celanese Corporation of America. In the early •part of the twentieth century, two young Swiss brothers, Camille and Henri Dreyfus, received their P.h.D. degrees in chemistry. They were extremely interested in work which was being carried on at that time to find a suitable synthetic fiber that could compete with natural fibers, both quality and price-wise. Early man-made fibers were both coarse and hard to dye. The Doctors Dreyfus• poured all their earnings into research and ultimately developed cellulose acetate filament. During World War I, the Dreyfus brothers were invited to the United States to produce cellulose acetate 'dope' for airplane wing coverings. Dr. Camille Dreyfus built the first American plant for fiber production at Cumberland, Maryland, in 1924.Due to resistance of textile mills to the new fibers, Celanese was forced to set up its own dying, weaving, and finishing mills to prove the new materials. Through the years, however, this operation has •been retained primarily for fabric development purposes,.. with the majority of the acetate being sold to other textile mills."

An in situ water sampling device has been developed to measure biologically-available or “labile” metals in natural waters and effluents. The active mechanism involves the use of a polyacrylamide gel layer to quantitatively control metal transfer to a trace-metal-adsorbing, gel-imbedded resin. Because the resin only adsorbs free metal ions (the gel sampler methodology is a kinetic speciation technique), and because metal bioavailability is related to the free-ion activity, the device provides a direct measure of the biological-availability of metals in the environment sampled. The prototype consists of a layer of ion-permeable polyacrylamide gel which separates the solution to be sampled from an ion exchange resin. Because approximately 90% of the polyacrylamide gel is water, mass transport through the gel is diffusion-controlled, and is therefore well defined. Metal ions are rapidly bound by the resin, creating a steep concentration gradient in the gel. The amount of labile trace metal that accumulates on the resin can be related directly to the concentration of the metal in solution, the exposure time and the molecular diffusion coefficient of the labile species. In addition, the passive nature of this device affords it the potential to address many of the limitations presented by conventional sampling methods, such as sample contamination introduced during collection or filtration and changes in trace metal speciation prior to analysis. Laboratory studies and limited field trials indicate that the sampler behaves as anticipated and illustrate that biologically- available metal concentrations in many environments are a small fraction of the total concentrations and often significantly less than the dissolved concentration. The implications of this on regulatory criteria are discussed. Additional field trials and correlation with bioassays are currently underway.

Considerable number of methods and procedures has been introduced for trending and progress reporting of engineering, procurement and construction projects. This paper introduces a novel method, designed to augment the set of indices for measuring schedule performance. The concept behind the developed method is to provide early warning by dynamically evaluating the schedule cumulative impact of construction projects. The proposed method is designed to highlight the gradual deterioration in schedule status resulting in a cumulative impact due to the aggregation of small delays encountered during the execution of non-critical activities, and can be used as an add-on utility to existing software systems that perform CPM scheduling. The proposed method is based on a developed formulation for quantification of the Schedule Compression Index, which takes into consideration the remaining project activities durations. The index is developed based on periodic comparisons of ?Current Schedules? and the project ?Baseline Schedule? using the summation of the remaining activities durations. A numerical example is presented to demonstrate the application and capabilities of the developed method. It is expected that the developed index together with other schedule performance indices would be of value to decision makers and members of project teams.

In the plant description, emphasis is given to the pyrometallurgical operations including zinc concentrate roasting, lead singer-blast furnace processing and silver refining. Production figures for the main metal products - zinc, lead, silver and gold - are provided.IntroductionIncorporated in 1906, Cominco Ltd. is an integrated natural resource company with principal activities in mining, smelting and refining, mineral exploration, fertilizer production and electrical power generation.Cominco is one of the world's largest producers of zinc and lead, accoW1ting for about 10070 of mine production in the western world. The company also produces and sells copper concentrate, copper sulphate, copper arsenate, sodium antirnonate, silver, gold, cadmium, bismuth, indium, and germanium dioxide and a range of fertilizers and sulphur products.Zinc OperationsRoastingThe roasters currently treat about 1400 t/d of zinc concentrates. Over half of the total concentrate treated originates from the Red Dog Mine in Alaska. During the summer, concentrate is shipped from Alaska to Vancouver where it is loaded into rail cars and hauled inland, transferred to trucks and delivered to Trail. The remainder of the roaster feed is made up of Sullivan concentrate and various custom concentrates. These arrive either by train or by truck.There are three roasters available for roasting the concentrate. The two major roasters are Lurgi fluid bed units. Each Lurgi roaster can process concentrate at about 1:7 tonnes per hour (tlb). A smaller Cominco suspension roaster with a capacity of 10 tlb is also used. The flowsheet for the high temperature section of the fluid bed circuit is shown in Figure 1.Concentrates fed to fluid bed roasting are conditioned with 7 1/min water to give 8% moisture in feed. Two slinger belts throw the mixture into the fluidized bed. The fluid bed roasters are 10.4 m in diameter with a bed depth of 1 m. Grate area is 84 m2• Normal operating conditions include bed temperatures of 930°C to 950°C, fluidizing air at 750 Nm3/min and a wind box pressure of 2000 mm H2O."

"Enclosed gear cases on board heavy mining equipment have traditionally been lubricated with regular heavy duty gear oils. However, equipment manufacturers, have recommended the use of an ISO-1000 gear oil for this application to ensure adequate lubricant film strength, especially at the higher end of the working temperature range. The majority of these ISO-1000 gear oils are based either on residual/asphaltic oil or synthetics, primarily higher viscosity polyalphaolefins. Although the performance of these lubricants has been satisfactory, they suffered other shortcomings that equipment users have lived with over the years.The major requirement at the user’s mine was to provide lubrication for the shovel Hoist gear case. Within such a gear case design, the gears and the roller bearings, that have different lubrication requirements, are lubricated with the same lubricant. Several lubricants were used, light gear oils as well as the recommended ISO-1000 heavy gear oils. On the one hand, the lighter oils performed adequately for the lubrication of the bearings that formed part of the enclosed gear system. These lighter oils did not perform as well for the lubrication of the gears due to their lower viscosities, resulting in shorter gear servicelives.On the other hand, the ISO-1000 gear oils performed well for the lubrication of the gears, but were too viscous to creep into the bearing elements to lubricate them adequately, especially during the cold northern Canadian winters. This resulted in catastrophic bearing failures and secondary damages to the gears.The challenge, then, was to formulate a lubricant which met the 1000 cSt at 40°C viscosity requirement as stipulated by the equipment manufacturer, while satisfactorily lubricating the bearings at the full working temperature range. This was achieved by the development of a semi-fluid grease lubricant, which has proven in field trials to give adequate performance in this application for the lubrication of both the bearings and gears down to -40°C.This product met the equipment manufacturer’s performance criteria and resolved, to a large extent, leakage of the lubricant through seals experienced with the use of conventional and synthetic gear oils.Although the main performance criteria of the fluid was its capability to lubricate the “Hoist” gear case, it was also used during the field trial in other gear cases on board the shovel to test its full capabilities.This unusual alternative lubricant was field tested and evaluated for more than two years. Based on this assessment, the product was reformulated to improve its fluidity, slumpability and the settling of debris/wear metals to the bottom of the gear cases. This reformulated softer grade, a semi-fluid grease, has been performing satisfactorily for more than eight months and is still undergoing longer term assessment."

"COAL MINING at Canmore, Alberta, began in 1886 and continued there until July 1979. A comprehensive review of the Canmore operations is not available, but the following notes have been prepared to accompany references where more complete information about the operations and problems encountered may be found. The coal measures at Canmore occur in the Kootenay formation of Lower Cretaceous age, and at least twelve seams of varying thickness and horizontal extent have been recognized. The coal, of high quality, ranges from semi-anthracite in the lower seams to low-volatile bituminous in the upper seams. The strata of the Canmore area form an asymmetric syncline, the western limb being overturned to vertical by the Palaeozoic strata of the Mount Rundle Range. The eastern limb is more gently sloping, its dip ranging from IO to about 40 degrees. Tectonic movements have created a troubled and complex coal field. The seams were initially not regularly or uniformly deposited, and mountain-building activity folded and faulted the strata and in many places sheared and crushed the original structures of the coal(l,2,3,4,5). The lack of continuity of the seams, and changes in thickness and inclination, made longrange mine planning difficult and necessitated flexible methods of work, and the local disturbances sometimes created problems in roof support and contributed to the occurrence of sudden outbursts of coal and gas. Almost all of the coal was produced from underground operations but a few relatively small V-cut mines were worked along surface outcrops. These have all been filled in and revegetated. The basic method of underground work was by room-and-pillar, but many variations in layout and sequences were employed. Gangways were driven along the strike and pillars were formed by raises or slopes and crosscuts. Pillars were recovered to the extent that ground conditions permitted by splitting or taking 'skips' from the sides of the raises or splits or crosscuts. Because of the variety of conditions that existed in the field a considerable range of cutting, loading and support methods were employed, including hand-loading, slushers and scrapers, duckbills and shaker conveyors, mobile loaders and continuous miners. Except for the coal obtained by continuous miners most of the coal was broken out by blasting when driving narrow working places or by air picks when cutting from a face. In the early years hand loading onto cars or conveyors predominated. A continuous miner was introduced into Canmore in 1959 on a trial basis, and another was subsequently acquired, in order to minimize blasting and hand loading, but problems in operating these machines in inclining seams and difficulties in providing safe roof support for the machines and workers restricted their efficient use. Another major difficulty with the use of continuous miners was the problem of ventilating development headings in the very gassy conditions. In the early 1970s they were replaced by electric and compressed air slushers and scrapers, resulting in a general increase in productivity, roof control, safety, and flexibility of operations(1.6,7,8.9)."

THE object in prospecting is to find ore. With the exception of certain discoveries of more or less accidental nature, intelligent prospecting as conducted today is, whether consciously or not, based upon a process of elimination. In the following discuss on it is proposed to evaluate those factors that enter into the eliminating of certain tracts of ground and, conyersely, the concentrating of attention upon others. The danger of generalizations as to the barrenness of cer.ain areas, without having due regard for all such factors, is emphasized. The fact that our conception as to what areas or rock formations are to be regarded as favourable or unfavourable is, in some measure at least, changing with new discoveries under diverse and unexpected circumstances, adds more point to the discussion. The criticism might be raised that the subject is treated largely from the standpoint of geology, but that may be met by stating that it is, and must continue to remain, precisely from this standpoint that the prospecror directs his activities. Briefly, the geologist may render the greatest service to the prospector in the early steps of selecting (a) the general territory in which to prospect; (b) the area to be intensively prospected; and, finally, (c) those parts of the claim or claims to be prospected in detail. Although certain phases of the discussion will be, in some measure, of general application, we shall here concern ourselves essentially with prospecting in the pre-Cambrian shield. Furthermore, the subject is so large that it has been decided to limit it to a consideration of that portion of the pre-Cambrian rocks in which is situated the mining district of western Quebec, of which the writer can speak with more personal knowledge. This limitation need not, however, seriously detract from whatever merit the discussion may possess, since the deposits concerned cover a fairly wide range of metallic ores, including gold, copper with associated zinc, and, lastly, molybdenum.

This paper gives a brief outline of the mining and milling methods which will be used on the Stirling zinc-lead-copper ores by Stirling Mines, Limited, who have for the past two years been developing the Stirling mine in Richmond county, Nova Scotia, and who will bring the mine into production in November, 1929. No attempt has been made to give the paper a detailed technical character, for the main reason chat, since base-metal mining is something new in Nova Scotia, it is felt that a general description would be preferable before this Society, whose membership is mainly made up of chose engaged in the coal mining and associated industries. Furthermore, as both mining and milling operations will be governed to a certain degree by the experience gained after production commences, there are many points which cannot be definitely stated now. GEOLOGY Before discussing the mining methods, it is desirable to present a general picture of the geology and occurrence of the ore-bodies. The surface rocks in the vicinity of the mine consist of rhyolites of .pre-Cambrian age. These volcanic flows outcrop in very few places, usually along' the beds of creeks or on the shores of the numerous small lakes. Consequently, a detailed geological map is not available. The exploration work carried out to date has revealed a sheared zone extending through the volcanic flows for a distance of over 1,000 feet. Along this zone, there has been a replacement of the rhyolites by a carbonate rock for widths varying from 50 to 230 feet, and it is in this carbonate formation chat the mineralization at a later date took place.

This paper outlines the type of water-bearing formations encountered in the Prairie Sediments and describes a method for effectively sealing these zones in order that shaft-sinking operations may be carried out with safety. Details are given of the procedure for carrying probe holes ahead of the shaft bottom. These probe or grout holes are employed for establishing a series of overlapping grout covers around the proposed shaft excavation to safeguard against large inflows of water during sinking. The pattern and length of grout covers cannot be standardized, and each cover needs to be specially designed to suit the varying ground conditions. In order to provide effective protection through the Prairie Sediments, the number of holes in any one cover would not be less than 8, and possibly as many as 64 would be required in certain zones. The length of covers would vary from 100 ft. to 250 ft. Emphasis is placed on the need for obtaining accurate geological and water information from exploratory holes, drilled in the shaft vicinity, in order to effectively plan all grout covers.

"IntroductionTHE PROBLEM of producing synthetic liquid fuels from coal and other raw materials is of increasing importance in Canada as well as in the United States. This is due, to a large extent, to the continually increasing demand for gasoline and other liquid products which are now obtained solely from petroleum. The United States has reached a position where domestic supplies of crude petroleum must be augmented by imports and Canada is still a long way from self-sufficiency. In the event of war, there might well be an immediate need to find supplementary sources of liquid fuels. It is, therefore, expedient to consider alternative sources of production now -well in advance of the time when supplies of petroleum may prove inadequate to meet requirements.The purpose of the present paper is to give a short review of the history of liquid fuel production from coal, to describe briefly the research sponsored by the Federal Government on the coal hydrogenation process, and finally to evaluate the present status and future trend of the synthetic fuel industry, with special reference to necessary research work.History of the Oil-From-Coal IndustryThe history -of coal liquefaction began in 1913, in Germany, with the work of Frederick Bergius. His first approach to the subject was not deliberately planned."

The average man one meets on the street thinks of an explosive as a medium of death and destruction, something unstable which should be given a wide berth, because he knows little or nothing about its use or its stability. Briefly, explosives are compounds that develop very large quantities of heat and gas in an extremely short time and in a small space, thereby exerting enormous pressure upon surrounding bodies, and by the rapid expansion of this highly heated gas are able to perform a considerable amount of useful work. The amount of heat generated and the volume of gas produced by the decomposition of an explosive determines the amount of mechanical work it can do, and the time occupied by its change from solid or liquid condition to gaseous condition determines its shattering effect. Explosives manufactured by reputable people are not extremely dangerous, on the other hand they are quite safe if handled in a proper manner. Furthermore, before an explosive can be placed on the Canadian market a sample must be submitted to the Explosives Division of the Mines Department, who may condemn or permit its manufacture, according to their findings regarding its safety in handling and its stability during storage.

Calcium, magnesium, bromide and iodide extraction from formation waters for use as industrial minerals has occurred in several countries, but not yet in Canada. Potential commercial brine fields exist in th e Upper Devonian Beaverhill Lake Formation of so uthern Alberta, and the Middle Devonian Elk Point Subgroup of north-central Alberta, f rom which calcium, magnesium and bromide are potential products. Iodide contents in fo rmation waters f rom the Upper Cretaceous Belly River Formation and the Lower Cretaceous Viking and Bow Island fo rmations in central and southern Alberta are at the lower range limit of commercial iodide-bearing formation waters elsewhere in the world. Available information is insufficient 10 outline potentially commercial areas in Alberta, but such info rmation can be most easily obtained f rom test borings for shallow natural gas. Lithium is not now produced commercially f rom formation waters but its content should be monitored in view of f uture increased demand for this metal.

Industrial mineral deposits are widespread in Newfoundland and Labrador and a variety of commodities are produced. The province has the only pyrophyllite mine in Canada and also produces asbestos, gypsum, silica, barite, limestone, gemstones, cement and other structural materials. Large reserves of these and other industrial minerals are known and several deposits are likely future producers. Most producers are wellestablished and have large tonnages of ore reserves.

The Dominion Coal Board was created by Statute passed on July 17th, 1947, and was brought into effect by proclamation on October 21st, 1947. It is, consequently, a comparatively young body, having been in existence for only eighteen months. Before dealing with the constitution and duties of the Board, it may be well to answer the unspoken question of why it has been considered necessary to single out coal as one specific mineral requiring the continuous attention of a specially created permanent Board. In Canada, coal has been the neglected sister of the more spectacular minerals and it comes as a surprise co many to note that in 1948 the value of the coal produced in Canada was higher than that of any other mineral with the one exception of gold. Coal touches upon our daily lives in many different places of which the public are not generally conscious. As household fuel, it is a necessity of life in this northern climate; as a source of steam, it provides the heat for most of our industries; it is the food of the 'iron horse' chat shuttles our persons and our goods across the land; it is the source of power in many parts of the country; it is the chemical reducing agent chat, in our furnaces, transmutes the metallic oxides to the virgin metal. Coal is, in fact, the indispensable mineral chat forms the corner-stone of our present structure of industrial civilization. Is it, then, such an odd thing that the provision of an adequate supply of coal should be a matter of national interest or that measures should have been taken by government co provide for a constant watch, by a permanent Board, on the supply of co al? ? The Board is the result of the recommendations of the Royal Commission on coal which made a long and detailed study of the Canadian coal problem. It is composed of a permanent Chairman and six part-time members, most of whom have had intimate contact with various phases of the industry.

"For decades, writers have expressed concern about impending shortages of professionals for Canada's minerals industry. Even under the present difficult economic circumstances, it is anticipated that the supply which will be available will not be adequate to meet the requirements in certain key areas including mining and petroleum engineering. It is evident that, unless further initiatives are taken, shortages will exist for some time.In this paper, the writer reviews information which relates to both the demand for, and the supply of, persons with advanced-level education in minerals-related disciplines. In particular, a summary is made of the information regarding supply which has been collected by the CIM General Committee on Education for many years.In concluding, the writer expresses some personal opinions regarding imbalances between demand and supply and offers some recommendations for future actions.IntroductionLast year, in a paper which was presented at the Annual General Meeting of the CIM in Calgary, the writer presented a review of the situation regarding professionally educated manpower for the minerals industry, and concluded that indications were that the gap between demand and supply was widening and that the situation could be expected to continue. Since that time, the deterioration of the nation's economy has caused an appreciable reduction in demand. Simultaneously, a further annual survey by the CIM has shown that the numbers graduating in certain specializations, notably geology and some of the technologies, are rising very rapidly. One of the great concerns of educators at present is that adequate opportunities may not exist for all of those who are now graduating.The danger of the present situation, then, is that a momentary lack of opportunities may cause potential students to choose alternative careers . Because of the lead-time which is involved, it is very possible that this could result in greater shortages during a period of economic recovery or expansion. Action must be taken to ensure that adequate numbers will be attracted to the industry, and this applies particularly to those who have already made the career decision and who are enrolled in minerals-related programs."

This paper presents the High Current Density (HCD) Silver Electrorefining Process. A 25-year history of development of the silver electrorefining process as well as associated equipment is given. The process is simple and robust, but at the same time highly automated. With low operating costs and man power requirement it allows consistent production of 99.99 % quality cathode silver. The process ensures that no toxic gases are formed in the working environment. Silver Electrorefining is a heart of a Silver Refinery plant covering the complete range of processes from casting of silver Doré anodes to casting of the bars of refined silver or/and silver granulation. The process has been successfully applied at 11 installations world-wide with plant capacities ranging from 30 to 1500 tpa.

"Studies have shown that the roof in coal mines is nearly twice as likely to fail at intersections as at entries due to enlarged roof spans, stress redistribution and other factors. However, the relative stability of intersections in a mine varies, and an improved understanding of what factors impact roof instability can lead to efficient, proactive mining practices that both enhance stability and mining efficiency.A study was undertaken at an underground longwall coal mine to develop a model to predict the stability at the intersections of entries and cross-cuts. The statistical analyses relied upon observational and measured data regarding the development of tension cracks, seepage, intersection geometry, mining practices, geological attributes and geomechanical factors at 783 intersections. Each intersection was given a NIOSH roof. Common data mining techniques, such as multivariate linear regression, multinomial logistic regression, decision trees and probabilistic neural nets, were considered and evaluated to establish correlations and associations between stability and the other variables. Two of the more successful techniques were Decision Trees and Multinomial Logistic Regression. The analyses showed that a number of factors impacted stability:• Overburden thickness (impact on stress concentration magnitudes)• Initial opening area (impact on stress concentration magnitudes)• Sulfur content (depositional environment & impact of mechanical properties, leaching effects)• Intersection type (impact on stress concentrations)• Gob distance (impact on stress concentrations)• Presence or proximity of a particular sandstone (impact on mechanical properties)• Roof bolt type and diameter (impact on reinforcement)Some factors showed no statistically significant relation to stability. These included:• Total area• Supported areaSeepage was a more problematic variable in assess. Seepage is associated with instability, but it is not clear whether seepage occurs as a consequence of instability, for example, through the creation of tension cracks, or whether the intersection has been excavated where water already exists and has degraded the rock prior to excavation, leading to greater instability.Seepage appears related to the geology of the roof rock mudstones, not the sandstones. Tension cracks in the intersections occur preferentially where the Sulfur content is below 0.9%. The Sulfur may relate to mechanical differences in the roof rock, and where the Sulfur is low, the roof is less stable, there are more tension cracks, and seepage is greater. This suggests that the weaker mudstones may be more prone the development of tension cracks, not because these rocks are more brittle, but possibly weaker.2-way and 3-way intersections appear to have less seepage than 4-way, although very few intersections overall have any seepage. This is similar to the roof stability, in which the 2-way and 3-way are more stable. 2-way and 3-way intersections have fewer-than-expected tension cracks, while 4-way have more than expected. These results suggest that four-way intersections are weaker and more prone to tension crack development, also suggesting that increased seepage results from weaker roof conditions, rather than the converse. Thus seepage appears to be mostly a consequence of instability rather than a cause and is higher where there are 4-way intersections, mudstone geology and external loading factors like depth of cover and proximity to gob that promotes crack development. The study also indicated that a better understanding of the mudrock facies could reduce uncertainty."

The Dominion Observatory was founded in 1905 and, from the beginning, it work included research in both astronomical and geophysical science. During its first years, up to 1916, the Observatory also included geodetic surveying as part of it scientific program. Although, at the beginning of the century, geophysics did not have the close connection with mineral exploration that it now holds , the founders of the Observatory were men of vision, and they laid a solid foundation for the application of the techniques of geomagnetism, gravity and seismology to an understanding of the Canadian terrain of plain , mountains, seacoasts and shield area . The particular sphere which the Observatory occupies in the field of geophysics has been evolving over a period of many years and it has now a rather definite relation to the work of other government bodies, university science departments and industrial organizations. We have, for example, an over-all responsibility for the regional magnetic mapping of Canada and, as the magnetic field is subject to slow but steady changes, we produce new magnetic maps of the country every five years. These maps indicate the strength and direction of the magnetic field, the variation of the compass and the rate of change of the magnetic elements.
