"A novel hydrometallurgical process for copper recovery from waste printed circuit boards has been proposed, which consists of selective leaching of copper metal as Cu(I) by Cu(II) in ammoniacal alkaline solution, purification, and electrowinning. The distinct feature of this process is much lower power consumption during the electrowinning than that during the conventional one from acidic copper sulfate media, because the deposition of copper metal from Cu(I) at the cathode and the oxidation of Cu(I) to Cu(II) at the anode take place in the present method. In the laboratory-scale tests using waste printed circuit boards, high purity copper which contains 1.1ppm of impurities was obtained in a chloride system. INTRODUCTIONThe recovery of various metals from waste materials is an important issue in order to conserve the environment and metal resources. Copper is used for cables, electric appliances, etc., and is currently a very important material for industries and will continue to be in the future. Among the wastes that contain copper, one of the most complex recycling materials is electronic scrap like printed circuit boards (PCB), which generally contain 10-30% copper as well as plastics, fibreglass and other metals. There are two ways to recover copper, either pyrometallurgical or hydrometallurgical. Hydrometallurgical treatments generally have more flexibilities in the process scale and control. The separation processes tend to become complicated because of the poor selectivity during the leaching in the sulphuric and hydrochloric acid media. On the other hand, the use of ammonia as a complexing agent, gave a higher selectivity for copper leaching (Nigo, Majima, Hirato, Awakura, & Iwai, 1993; Majima, Nigo, Hirato, Awakura, & Iwai, 1993; Zhou, Shinme, & Anezaki, 1995; Koyama, Tanaka, & Lee, 2006) .In this study, recycling process containing leaching, copper deposition at a cathode and oxidation of copper(I) at an anode from ammoniacal alkaline solutions containing Cu(I) or Cu(II) is introduced. Furthermore, copper recovery from a waste printed circuit boards and impurity behaviour was examined in ammonia-ammonium sulfate (sulfate system) and ammonia-ammonium chloride (chloride system) systems."

"Vale Long Harbour Processing Plant (LHPP) was designed to process Voisey’s Bay nickel concentrate into finished nickel and associated copper and cobalt products. The plant includes a secondary grinding circuit comprising two Stirred Media Detritors (SMDs) operating in parallel. The ultrafine grinding circuit was designed to process concentrate at a rate of 33 t/h and produce a ground product (P80) of 20 µm to feed the leach circuits. Start-up of the grinding circuit at LHPP was undertaken in December 2014.The objective of this paper will be to describe the design, commissioning, start-up and performance of the secondary grinding circuit with a focus on the two Metso SMD-355-C mills. Following a brief overview of Vale’s LHPP and the SMD technology, the paper will review the design of the SMD secondary grinding circuit from lab tests through to scale-up performance prediction. This will be followed by the results of circuit commissioning outlining some of the issues raised and addressed after which SMD performance will be outlined. Specifically, the SMD circuit grinding performance will be examined since start-up which will include the effect of media size and wear on grinding. Furthermore, impeller wear will be examined by determining initial “shear volume” and worn “shear volume” as well as its effect on mill power and the means to maintain it. The paper closes with a discussion on grinding performance."

This paper offers a brief review of current literature pertaining to vacuum degassing or vacuum casting of steel as practiced in the U.S.A., Germany and the U.S.S.R. The advantages of vacuum degassing of large forging ingots, heavy section casting, for the conversion of rimming bessemer steels to killed steel and for the production of transformer steels are discussed. Operating pressures, reduction in gas contents and improvements in hydrogen segregation, steel cleanliness and mechanical properties, obtained with the various techniques, are described. The paper includes a description of an experimental vacuum stream-droplet degassing unit and some preliminary results obtained at the Physical Metallurgy Division Research Laboratories Department of Mines and Technical Surveys, Ottawa on laboratory steel melts. When producing high grade mattes in smelter plants, copper losses in the slag are inevitable. Hence, the recovery of copper from slag has been the focus of many research projects, copper flotation being a widely used process. In the Khatoonabad converter, 200 t/d of slag are presently produced with a grade of 2.3% Cu. Assuming a 85% recovery by flotation, about 3.9 t/d copper could be produced, which is of prime importance economically. In the present work, a sample of this slag was crushed and ground in the laboratory to liberate the copper-bearing minerals. Following mineralogical studies, optimum laboratory flotation parameters were obtained, resulting in 90.27 % recovery and 9.42% of copper grade for the rougher stage. At pilot scale, a pulp of 28% solids was floated at ph 10.5 using 40 git of Z6, 25 git of R407 and 20 git of MIBC and A65. A recovery of 83.52% was obtained for a concentrate grade of 28.36% Cu. In the rougher cells, the feed consisted of particles 94% finer than 74 microns whereas in the cleaning stage, particles were 95% finer than 44 microns. Based on the obtained results, the Sarcheshmeh Khatoonabad converter slag is presently being fed to the Chargonbad flotation plant, where a concentrate of 32% copper at 86% recovery is being produced.

Hanging wall deformation monitoring at the Kiruna Mine is a major concern for Luossavaara- Kiirunavaara AB (LKAB) since underground production is deepening towards the Kiruna Town. In the quest for more effective monitoring techniques, LKAB decided to evaluate satellite-borne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) interferometry?s ability to monitor ground subsidence by generating continuous deformation maps from satellite radar images. While adopted by other geoscience-related industries, SAR interferometry is still relatively untested in the Mining industry. This paper describes how subsidence is actually monitored on the Kiruna Mine?s hanging wall and gives an insight on SAR interferometry?s principle. The encouraging results are discussed as well as the technique?s benefits (continuous deformation mapping, low cost, fast, etc) and limitations (sensitivity to snow and vegetation cover).

THE purpose of this paper is to point out, briefly, the importance of the coal mining industry of Alberta and to stress the economic factors that hinder its development; also to offer suggestions relating to the major problems of the industry. The minor problems will not be dealt with in detail, because, if the major problems are taken care of, it is felt that the industry itself can take care of ,he remainder. COAL MINING NO LESS IMPORTANT THAN GOLO MINING The large increase in metal mining development in all provinces of Canada, excepting Saskatchewan, Alberta, and the Maritimes, has had the effect of focussing public attention on this branch of the industry. The fact, also, that this development came at a time of depression has been of immense benefit to Canada as a whole. On account of the necessity and consequent demand for gold, with its attendant increase in price, through government action, from $20.67 per ounce to $35.00 per ounce, it is safe to say that the public of Canada have become, today, gold mining conscious. While everyone admits the great value. of the gold mrn111g industry, nevertheless, the equal value to Canada of certain other industries must not be lost sight of. The coal mining industry, in particular, is worthy of greater public and government support than has been accorded it in the past. It would seem unnecessary to stress this matter to a meeting of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, but unless certain facts are brought to your attention, there is danger that the coal mining industry will not be developed to the extent its national importance deserves. Too many public men and men in authority are unaware of the value of coal mining.

A conductivity cell, developed previously, was employed in an effort to investigate the inter-relation between electrical conductivity and acidity of sulphuric acid - metal sulphate solutions at high temperatures. The measured solutions include the H2SO4-H2O, MgSO4-H2O, H2SO4-MgSO4-H2O, H2SO4-MgSO4-Al2(SO4)3-H2O solutions. All solutions reported in this paper were measured from 15 to 250 °C at equilibrium vapour pressure. The maximum measured concentrations of H2SO4, MgSO4 and Al2(SO4)3 were 0.45 m, 0.30 m and 0.10 m, respectively. It was found that, from 15 to 250°C, there is a linear relationship between H2SO4 concentration and electrical conductivities for acid concentration up to 0.45 m. At 250 °C and constant H2SO4 concentration, the solution conductivity drops with the increase of MgSO4 concentration. Lt is suggested that this drop is caused by a decrease in the concentration of H. Finally, an empirical model was developed based on the available measurements. This model has been tested against real laterite leach solutions where sulphuric acid and metal sulphates are dominant electrolytes. The average difference between the estimate acid concentration from this model and the one from titration was less than 5%.

"Abstract - MEGATEMII airborne electromagnetic data collected over the Iso and New Insco massive sulfide deposits have been modeled using three modeling packages. The EMQ package is a quick inversion tool which indicates that the Iso body is a dipping, plate-like body. The New Insco body is inferred to have a geometry somewhere between a dipping plate and a sphere. The Maxwell package was used to refine the properties of the plate-like body at Iso. The EMIGMA package was able to identify which parts of the New Insco orebody were more conductive. It was observed that the most conductive parts correspond to copper-rich zones and the next most conductive to pyrite-rich zones. The EMIGMA package was also used to show that a thick-prism model might be more appropriate for the New Insco orebody. Gravity modeling constrained by the known geology was successful in identifying the denser sulfide zones. The densest zones appear to be pyrite rich. Magnetic modeling identified diabase dikes. Over New Insco, a small magnetic anomaly was attributed to pyrrhotite-rich sulfides. There was only a weak magnetic anomaly over the Iso body, consistent with the nonmagnetic sulfides logged in the holes drilled at that location. "This paper suggests that with the settlement of long-term contracts of fifteen years' duration, with prospects of extension, the coal mining industry has, for the first time, a complete commercial justification for large-scale planning.The labour costs of coal production over past years are analyzed and, with the acceptance of the premise that the basic shift rates are certain to rise in the years to come, the paper suggests that forward planning should provide &r capital investment to make a traditionally labour-dense industry into a capital-dense industry.Automated methods of manpower deployment and timekeeping and the monitoring of all equipment back to a central control point are discussed as ail-important means of obtaining maximum utilization of high-cost capital investment.Principles of payment of the work-force, and the utilization of equipment 24 hours a day, seven days a week and the maximum number of days a year, are dealt with as means of achieving maximum capital utilization. Some of the new technical underground and coal preparation problems which will undoubtedly result from the concentration of workings and maximum machine utilization are discussed, and the author makes suggestions as to how these might be solved.In short, the author predicts that if the coal mining industry is prepared to recognize the problems and invest in modern equipment backed by highly trained staff. then the outcome will justify the high capital investment involved. He stresses the importance of human communications in achieving this end."

Thiosulfate is recognized as a promising alternative lixiviant to cyanide for the extraction of gold from ore bodies. Gold thiosulfate ([Au(S2O3)2]2), however, is not well-adsorbed by activated charcoal, making industrial scale use of thiosulfate for gold leaching impractical at present. Because of their high specific surface areas (500-1000 m2g-1) and uniform open-framework nanoporosity (pore channel diameters in the range 3-10 nm), functionalized mesoporous silicas are widely recognized as highly effective materials for the selective, rapid and high capacity uptake of mercury, gold and platinum group ions. In the present work, the efficient and rapid adsorption of gold thiosulfate by thiol-functionalized mesoporous silica (hereafter designated MP-HMS) is demonstrated, whereby the thiol groups in the materials bind with the gold complexes by ligand displacement. The adsorbed gold could be leached out using cyanide, regenerating the adsorbent for further uptake cycles. Functionalized mesoporous silica is thus a promising candidate for the preconcentration of gold from thiosulfate leachate solutions.

"In view of the increasing number of environmental regulations that have been promulgated all over the world in the last thirty years, non-ferrous smelters and refineries have had to learn and adapt to treating process bleed waste streams containing heavy metals. The result of such treatment invariably yields a gypsum-saturated solution containing salts such as alkali metal sulfates, chlorides and fluorides. Presence of anions such as sulfates, chlorides and fluorides in the discharge streams – presently not a major problem- are coming under increasing scrutiny and will have to be addressed in the near future. It is envisaged that discharge limits for sulfate ions will be in place in the near future. Treatment of brackish water to produce drinking water also results in brine streams containing alkali salts that have to be addressed for proper disposal. This paper reviews treatment options for such streams containing high levels of total dissolved solids with emphasis on sulfate removal. Areas covered would be: a) chemical treatment for removal of various constituents that make up the total dissolved solids b) processes for sulfate removal processes –thermal and non-thermal-to recover and reuse of treated water and c) brine use and treatment options.INTRODUCTIONThe rising cost of water and meeting the ever-changing stringent environmental discharge regulations make water recycling and reuse essential. The metallurgical industry has used water as a medium for dissolving and/or rejecting metals and chemicals in addition to removing thermal energy. Any excess process effluent is collected and sent to end-of-pipeline treatment and ultimately discharged to surface water for disposal under a permit. The conventional- and probably the cheapest way -of treating metal-bearing process effluent streams is lime neutralization followed by sulfide polishing for elimination of heavy metals to produce a stream that meets NPDES discharge limits. This results in a stream containing dissolved solids.These dissolved solids normally comprises of inorganic salts. The possible constituents are cations calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium. The anions are sulfate, chloride, fluoride, nitrate, carbonate and bicarbonate. In addition to these constituents, the treated effluent streams contain very small amounts of heavy metals, oxyanions such as arsenites, arsenates, selenites and selenates. Process streams from gold operations contain residual cyanide. Small amounts of ammonium ions are also present in these streams based on the pH of the solution."

"The Sturgeon Lake deposit, a partly eroded lens of massive sulphides with an underlying sulphide stringer zone, is one of five orebodies that occur in the Sturgeon Lake area of northwestern Ontario within volcaniclastic rocks of the Archean Wabigoon Subprovince in the Superior Province of the Canadian Shield.The Sturgeon Lake Cu-Zn-Pb-A g-Au deposit was discovered in October 1970 as a result of an I.P. survey. Production from this open-pit mine began in March 1974 and continued until the ore was exhausted in March 1980.The Sturgeon Lake property is underlain by basaltic volcanics, minor amounts of mafic lapilli tuff and rhyolite volcaniclastics. A quartz crystal-bearing rhyolite occurs at the top of the felsic volcaniclastics and is ""capped"" by the Sturgeon Lake massive sulphide deposit. The felsic volcanics have been intruded by a crudely layered sill-like, carbonatized mafic intrusion. Recent work suggests that the felsic rocks that underlie the Sturgeon Lake deposit are lateral equivalents of those in the vicinity of the Mattabi Mine and are not correlative with the dacitic volcaniclastics that underlie the Lyon Lake and Creek Zone deposits. Hydrothermal processes that resulted in the formation of the Sturgeon Lake orebody have resulted in a depletion of Na2O, CaO and FeO and an increase in MgO, K2O, copper and zinc. In the vicinity of the sulphide stringer zone, the rhyolites are ""bleached"" due to silicification and sericitization. The rocks lying immediately below the massive sulphides are locally strongly chloritic.The Sturgeon Lake deposit may have formed on a top ographic high which prevented mafic flows and dacitic volcaniclastics that underlie the Lyon Lake and Creek Zone deposits from inundating the Sturgeon Lake fumarolic vent from the west. Continued or resurgent activity from the Sturgeon Lake fumarole may have resulted in the formation of the Lyon Lake and Creek Zones as more ""distal "" deposits in topographic lows. The Sturgeon Lake, Lyon Lake and Creek Zone deposits were subsequently overlain by mafic tuffs and flows."

In recent years, a number of significant developments have occurred in the steel industry which are no-table and of general interest. This paper is confined to the steel-melting phase of the business. The development of high production rates on Stelco's Basic Open Hearth furnaces is chronologically summarized. Al-though various aspects of this subject have been presented previously, this paper summarizes the developments in high fuel rates, the usage of basic refractories, low and high oxygen rates and hearth maintenance. Background T HE interest which has been shown in steelmaking techniques in the past few years has been due, primarily, to the extremely high production rates obtained. Upon further study of the facilities and techniques employed to generate this steel at record rates, tonnage oxygen appears as the common factor. It can be stated that tonnage oxy-gen has revolutionized steelmaking techniques to a degree never before encountered. The work in this paper describes the theory, development and analysis of a computer model simulating a mine operation moving material using concurrent decline ramp truck haulage and skipping practices. This simulation was designed specifically to assess the performance of the truck haulage component and to expand on the scope and capabilities of traditional TKM fleet calculations. Haulage fleet simulation results were similar to TKM calculations for the lower to moderate production rate cases. However, comparisons of ramp-up and high production rate scenarios indicated that the simulation model was significantly more sensitive to operating practices and factors not accounted for by calculations derived when using a single TKM figure. Given the proper calibration of inputs and logic, the simulation model was additionally capable of providing information associated with general mine operations efficiency. Further benefits of the simulation model over a TKM approach included logistical assessments such as production schedule feasibility, productivity trade-off quantifications for proposed operating practices, and the validation of mine resource utilization scheduling. The simulation model was able to expand on traditional methods to approach planning and logistics by considering factors such as truck queuing, real-time traffic interactions, random events, and competition for resources on mine productivity.

THE Buchans ore bodies are located in central Newfoundland, three miles north of Red Indian lake. The townsite of Buchans was named after a Royal Navy Captain who, while attempting to make contact with the Beothuck Indians, camped in the area in 1820. Ore was first found at Buchans by a Mic Mac Indian, Matty Mitchell, who discovered one of the three small orebodies in the bed of the Buchans river. The Anglo-Newfoundland Development Company, which holds mineral rights in the area, developed the orebody, but was forced to give up the venture because of difficulties encountered in separating the various sulphides. The American Smelting and Re-fining Company developed a flotation process which was capable of economically separating and concentrating the various sulphides, and, in 1926, they took a long-term lease on the property.

Knowing shear mechanism of discontinuities under monotonic and cyclic loading conditions is a key factor in stability analysis of rock slopes and rock foundations. In this paper, the effect of cyclic loads on the shear mechanism of joint asperities is described. For this purpose, a fresh tension-split joint from a granite block was used as a reference and thirty five mortar replicas were fabricated. Cyclic shear tests were conducted on replicas under low values of constant normal load (CNL) using a servo-controlled loading system. Tests were performed in two consecutive steps; load-controlled and then displacementcontrolled. In the load controlled part, after initial increase of shear stress to 0.25 MPa, the test was stopped for 2 minutes, then increased to 0.5 MPa, and finally decreased to 0.25 MPa. This process was repeated ten times. At the end, the test was continued up to 10 mm shear displacement under displacement-controlled loading in order to pass the peak shear strength and reach the residual strength. Characterizing joint surface and modeling of involved asperities during the tests was undertaken using a Matlab code developed with new mathematical expressions. The algorithm used in the code is based on three-dimensional coordinates of the scanned joints’ surfaces before and after the test. It was found that a high percentage of degradation happens during the first cycle of loading and during the other cycles, degradation occurs gradually. While comparing tests conducted in monotonic and cyclic loading conditions, it was observed that under low number of cycles, the pronounced mechanism is consolidation of the joint surfaces. This consolidation increases contact areas and, therefore, shear strength parameters.

The continuous improvement in aluminum industry over the last years has increased metal output at lower cost. The potlining plays an important role in this regard due to high cost involved and more recently in its environmental aspects. In order to increase potlife and thus minimize the aluminum cash cost, a systemic approach is needed, through investigating the main cathode failure mechanisms by using a pot autopsy as a powerful tool, and then making the necessary chances to achieve extended potlife. In addition, preheating and pot start-up may also damage the cathode if not performed with an appropriate technique or even if the lining materials are not specified correctly, among other factors. All these aspects will be presented and discussed in this paper. Increased potlife, especially now that the current is reaching values up to 300kA, will allow aluminum plants to match their goals more efficiently at lower costs.

Bubble nucleation in water under dynamic conditions was investigated using an autoclave at an air saturation pressure of 7 atm. Agitation during air saturation of water was found to be crucial in enhancing tiny bubble formation. More bubbles nucleated on hydrophobic surfaces at a higher agitation rate, due to cavity formation by the more intense hydrodynamic conditions. Flotation recovery of bitumen from oil sands demonstrated a significant role of bubbles nucleated in water: more than 50-170% increase in bitumen recovery from different oil sands was obtained by using air supersaturated than the regular water.

The Daly-Judge Tunnel, begun in 1887 to drain mine workings, is now a source of potable water for the Municipality of Park City. The water is exceptionally clean; however, when roof falls occur, suspended solids levels become too high and water from the tunnel cannot be used in the treatment plant. In 2001, the tunnel was inspected and rehabilitated to ensure that the water supply for the 2002 Winter Olympic Games would be uninterrupted. Twenty-five timber tunnel sets were removed, and 86 steel sets were installed. Timber lagging was installed or replaced over about 230 m (750 ft) of tunnel length.
