The capital requirements to develop a new mining venture are becoming very large; amounts of the order of US$1,000 million are not now unusual among estimates to bring new mining complexes into production. At the same time prevailing political and economic conditions are making it increasingly difficult to determine whether or not a project is likely to be viable. These factors emphasise the need to carry out thorough evaluation studies of all mineral prospects before making major investment. Additionally with the rapidly changing economic climate existing at the present time, it is becoming more and more necessary to carry out reappraisals of existing mines. An important function of both initial evaluations and reappraisals is to provide the operators of the mine with effective mining plans to ensure that the operation will meet its required economic targets. The U.S. Bureau of Mines installed surface and subsurface instruments at a mine site in Colorado to monitor and characterize the overburden response to longwall mining. Instrumentation included a time-domain reflectometry (TDR) cable, a multiple-point borehole extensometer (MPBX), vertical- deformation surface monuments, and in-mine pressure cells for monitoring abutment, pillar, and gob loads with respect to the longwall face position. The purpose of the study was to collect data that could be analyzed to correlate the design of the mine layout to the resulting overburden failure response. Determining the extent of caving and fracturing is important in the and and semiarid Western United States because of the possible consequences to the fragile underground hydrologic systems upon which the land owners and users depend. This study is unique from past investigations because the overburden contains massive sandstone members that impose special conditions on the caving process and pressure redistribution above the longwall panels. This paper presents the results of this correlation study.

The Prestea Goldfields Ltd of Ghana, West Africa has produced over 170 t of gold with average grade of 11 g/t since 1912. The deposits occur in a wide shear zone which closely follow the Birimian-Tarkwaian contact. Both the Birimian and Tarkwaian systems are of Precambrian age. Underground exploration is carried out to delineate ore bodies by means of AX size diamond drilling at 50 m sampling intervals. After the orebody has been delineated, development work is carried out by exposing the gold reef. Channel sampling is then carried out at about 3 m intervals in both the stope and stope drives. A channel sample length is commonly 0.6 in, but may vary depending on physical characteristics of the reef. The values of channel samples are linearly combined to obtain the average reef or slope values and/or widths of the exposed sections. The sampling practice and methods of improving the efficacy of sampling at the mine are described.

An integrated mining equipment development organisation is typified by Deutsche Montsn Technologic of Essen, Germany. working on improvements in reliability, production and control in coal mines. Examples of recent mining advances are in mechanised roadheading, in different approaches to cutting technology, and in low height roof bolting.On the longwall face the mechanics of cutting are related to supplied energy as well as to dust make. In conveying both armoured face conveyors and conveyor belts are monitored. Roof support is not neglected and the continuous pumping of stowage slurries provides further options for longwall support. Surveying developments, particularly the gyro-theodolite, directional drilling. and shaft vehicle monitoring provide further examples of advances in control in coal mining activities.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Elaine Dorothy Cu-Au (REE-U) skarn deposit in the Mt Isa Inlier, Queensland, Australia is characterised by extensive metamorphic calc-silicate hornfels long before hydrothermal skarn and complicated deformation history. The deposit is hosted by the Corella Formation (1780–1740 Ma) and exhibits two phases of skarn formation in the study area – banded fine-grained diopsidic hornfels (Phase 1) and coarse-grain pyroxene skarn (Phase 2). Phase 1 skarn is predeformation and is interpreted to have been caused by the 1743–1734 Ma Burstall Magmatic Suites, whereas the coarse-grained pyroxene skarn (Phase 2 skarn) postdates the deformation and peak metamorphism events. Phase 2 skarn consists of prograde pyroxene, less garnet and titanite, retrograde epidote, REE-allanite, amphibole, biotite, and later sulfides, carbonate, quartz, anhydrite and chlorite. It hosts most of the copper mineralisation, with the REE elements occurring mostly in allanite. Titanite coexisting with allanite and Cu-Fe sulfides in Phase 2 skarn has been dated by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) at 1524 ± 9 Ma (207Pb/206Pb). The ages are similar to Williams-Naraku Batholiths, which outcrop approximately 40 km to the east in the Eastern Fold Belt. In Elaine Dorothy, the isotopic compositions for calcite cluster around 12.2‰ d18O and -3.7‰ d13C. It probably resulted from a mixing processes between marine sourced carbon-oxygen (ca 20‰ d18O and -0.5‰ d13C) and other distinct geochemical reservoirs, eg magmatic C-O. These features indicate that Phase 2 skarn and Cu-Au (REE-U) mineralisation may be related to unexposed intrusions at deeper levels.CITATION:Sha, P, Spandler, C and Chang, Z, 2015. Physically-based landform evolution models (LEM) provide a spatial framework to forecast the long-term geomorphic stability of post-mining landscapes. When used to test the relative stability of different landform designs, LEMs may assist with the development of optimal closure designs for rehabilitated mines. However, in order to reduce prediction error, factors controlling landscape evolution must also be accurately represented by models. This requires that the correct sets of processes are represented and that driving parameters used in LEMs are, if necessary, calibrated to the landscape of interest.Vegetation exerts strong controls on the hydrologic and geomorphic processes that drive landscape evolution. Hence, the spatial and temporal scales over which typical patterns in vegetation are represented in different landscapes are important considerations in LEM calibration. However, vegetation is rarely accounted for in LEMs and even when integrated is often represented simply, without representing spatial dynamics of vegetation cover that may impact landform development.This study focuses on characterising vegetation patterns to calibrate a new vegetation module of the The Cellular Automaton Evolutionary Slope and River (CAESAR)-Lisflood LEM to be applied to a conceptual rehabilitated landform of the Ranger uranium mine located in the Alligator Rivers Region (ARR) of northern Australia. In the ARR the spatial dynamics of vegetation over time are largely driven by monsoonal rains and topography. Extensive dry season fires are also common in the region, temporarily reducing vegetation cover where they occur. Hence, hydrology, topography and fire disturbance interact to shape a distinct, yet dynamic, mosaic of different vegetation types of varying cover density. As a basis for calibrating the new vegetation function, the distribution and dynamics of vegetation are characterised for this savannah landscape by remote sensing, in conjunction with ground data.CITATION:Boyden, J, Lowry, J, Coulthard, T, Whiteside, T, Hancock, G and Grant, S, 2016. In-seam, directional drilling has been implemented at Huntly West Mine, New Zealand as the most cost effective means of obtaining geological information at a level of detail and accuracy required for planning of longwall ("flexiwall") panels. No geological or geophysical technique tried at the mine prior to 1989 has been able to reduce geological risk to an acceptable level. Surface and in-seam seismic methods have not had adequate resolution. Obtaining the required knowledge via surface drilling would be prohibitively costly, and still not precisely locate or orient faults or the axes of seam "ridges and valleys".A total of 3543 m was drilled at an average of 67m/shift including setting up time. Unplanned delays totalled only 9.6 percent. Major re-interpretation of seam structure resulted from the drilling. Lateral and longitudinal panel grades have been defined. which should be negotiable with the Coalcorp longwall equipment.

It is the aim of this paper to review recent research in understanding the role of cyanide in the elution of gold. Under conditions of severe pre-treatment (high temperatures and levels of cyanide), the dynamics of elution are determined mainly by the adsorption equilibrium and the flow conditions in the column. When conditions are less favourable for desorption, transport phenomena are rate controlling. The most important sub-processes of elution are the changes in cyanide, potassium and gold concentrations, as well as the change in passivation of the carbon surface. Mathematical models to simulate the various sub-processes are described briefly.The presence of an irreversibly adsorbed species such as AuCN on the carbon is determined mainly by the pH, temperature and the type of carbon. Cyanide in the pre-treatment step will convert the AuCN to reversibly adsorbed Au(CN)2. Competition between cyanide and Au(CN)z for adsorption sites will enhance the elution of gold, but plays a minor role at elevated temperatures. The most important effect of cyanide is its reaction with the functional groups on the carbon to passivate the surface for the adsorption of anionic metal cyanides and thereby promote the elution of gold. This passivation, caused by the degradation of cyanide, is strongly temperature dependent. Free cyanide in the elution step of an AARL elution is of lesser importance than the cyanide in the pre-treatment step. Elution without cyanide is possible only after cold acid washing, and has been proven on plant scale.

The evolution of economic precious metal and copper-gold deposits in high-level igneous terranes is dependent on very efficient fluid focussing. This is most readily achieved by contemporaneous deformation, igneous intrusion and hydrothermal activity. Mineralisation in these environments generally occurs in fault and fault-vein arrays developed in the cover sedimentary and volcanics sequences above older regional scale fault systems. Such reactivated fault systems an particularly prone to developing the complex fracture arrays, extreme local dilation and dramatic increases in permcahilit} that are necessary to efficiently focus hydrothermal fluid and produce large mineral deposits.

The bulk flotation behaviour of an industrial rougher bank has been determined with a view to characterising the size iepend ent behaviour of the identifiable nineral groups present. A relatively simple flotation model, based on first order kinetics and the assumption of perfect mixers in series ias been used to provide a fit to the operation of the cells. The adequacy of the model is discussed in relation to the characteristics of the ore and the size iependancy of the parameters. It is shown that improved fits are possible if the model accounts explicitly for this size dependancy and demonstrated how the model may be of use in prediction of the grade recovery relationships for different operating conditions as an aid to plant optimisation.

The gas drainage characteristics of two seams, the Bowen at Bowen No. 2 Colliery, Collinsville, and the Gemini at Leichhardt Colliery, Blackwater, are assessed. Single borehole tests and drainage panels were studied by underground monitoring of pressures and gas flows. Permeability was found to be effected by cleat to an order of magnitude. Other structural features are shown to be important. In this context, the need for delineation of no-flow zone locations in boreholes is shown to be of great importance where in-seam pre-drainage is being used for outburst control. Water in the seams strongly influences permeability causing gas flows to fluctuate with time. Use is made of modified reservoir engineering techniques to analyse the drainage characteristics of seams.

A four monthly period was analysed for each retreating longwall face which indicated that output increased from 1140 tonnes/day for Longwall 1, to 1620 tonnes/day for Longwall 2 and to 2090 tonnes/day for Longwall 3. An output of 2500 tonnes/day should be achieved from the new Longwall 4, largely due to the improved tailgate corner design and despite a continuing lump coal problem. The evolutionary trend is a feature of longwall mining; the evolution occurring both with mining and mechanical design at the colliery itself and with the longwall equipment offered by manufacturers. The trend is towards simplicity, increased strength and capacity, simplified maintenance and increase relia- bility.

The Prospect to Pipehead Tunnel is a component of the Sydney Water Board's multi-million dollar Drinking Water Quality Program to improve the quality of Sydney's potable water supply to meet revised national health guidelines. The tunnel project involves the construction of seven kilometres of 3.9 metre diameter machine bored tunnel which is to be lined with a three-metre diameter steel liner. The paper describes the fully integrated planning and design approach and management technique used to enable this major project to proceed to meet the requirements of a tight construction program.

Ora Banda Gold Mine is located in the Eastern Goldfields of Western Australia. Mining is carried out underground by sublevel open sloping resulting in large open stopes. A Mass Blast of approximately 250 000 tonnes was carried out in July 1994 to recover a rib pillar between two stopes, and the crown pillar between the underground mine and the abandoned open pit above. Strategic development within 50 m of the blast consisted of two ventilation shafts and the main decline. This development required careful design and prediction of the blast results. This paper describes the design of the blast, the prediction of the likely effects, the measures taken to reduce the risk to important development, and the results of the blast.

The late 1960's and 1970's saw the initial development of the coal resources of the Bowen Basin of Queensland. The projects developed relied on large scale, open-cut operations using draglines for overburden removal and, in the majority of cases, project viability could be established based solely on those open-cut operations. Many of the mines developed in the 1980's have the same characteristics.Unlike these mines, the German Creek Mine has limited open-cut reserves at low overburden to coal ratios, and planning of the complex involved a large open-cut mine capable of developing early cash flow, with phased introduction of underground mining to replace open-cut capacity as the strip ratio increased.

An outline of the ventilation and refrigeration requirements of deep South African gold mines is presented. This is followed by a brief description of the history of controlled recirculation in mines and the practical and economic benefits such schemes can offer. The potential hazard of a fire in a recirculation system is discussed.The major part of the paper describes the first large-scale field trial of controlled recirculation to be conducted in South Africa. Emphasis is placed on the monitoring system that was used for data acquisition during the trial, and also on a safety system designed to shut off the recirculation fans in the event of a fire.The paper concludes with a review of the latest development work taking place on recirc-ulation safety systems.

Heavy minerals are mined from two fossil strandlines on the southern Swan Coastal Plain. The Capel shoreline, 7 km inland, and the Yoganup shoreline, 15 km inland are arcuate, northwest-facing, and remote from the modern coast. Based on foraminiferal and molluscan assemblages, the shorelines are probably of Pliocene age. The Yoganup shoreline is adjacent to the Whicher Scarp, which is cut into the Leederville Formation (Lower Cretaceous) at the southern boundary of the Swan Coastal Plain. Stratigraphic relations and detailed sedimentology have been studied from temporary exposures in the Yoganup Extended and Yoganup North mines, within a strandline complex at 27 m and 18-33 m above sea level respectively. Heavy minerals were deposited in thin, shallowing-upward sequences along a wave-dominated clastic shoreline cut into pre-Cainozoic sediments. Lithofacies units deposited in eolian, foreshore, shoreface and lagoonal environments are the most significant sites of heavy mineral accumulation. The data collected provide a basis for further exploration.

The problem of comparison of island arc's andesites in terms of petrochemical data is exa- mined. It is definitely established that only two main factors exist controlling the petroche- mical variety of the Kurile arc's andesites.Ori final multivariate statistical technique and computer software are used to extract these fac- tors. It is shown as well that the chemical com- position of igneous rocks depends on the type and structure of the Earth's crust. The follo- ~cing interpretation is proposed for the two factors describing petrochemistry of andesites: the first one is the depth to the Benioff seis- mofocal zone and the second one is supposed to indicate the position of the peripheral magma chambers.
