In describing their procedure for measuring the lattice parameters of solid solutions, Abrahamson and Lopata report (p. 77) the final heat treatment of their alloy specimens as "700°C for 100 hr, followed by a furnace cool". The isothermal part of this treatment may be expected to precipitate solute in excess of the stable a solid-solution limit at 700°C; the subsequent slow cooling is likely to reduce the dissolved solute still further. Fig. 1 (upper) presents the data for titanium alloys so he;rt-treated and shows the lattice parameters of solid solutions containing up to 3.5 at. pct Ti; Fig. 17 (lower) shows 2 at. pct Ti as the solubility limit in a iron at 700°C. Figs. 1 and 17 are thus incompatible. The paper contains comparable incon~patibilities for zirconium alloys, for niobium alloys, and for tantalum alloys. The final heat treatment at 700°C may also be responsible for the anomalous "knee" in the lattice-parameter data for nickel alloys, Fig. 3. The "knee" composition is located near the 700°C limit of the stable a solid-solution field;37 alloys of the experimental composition range with more nickel than the "knee" composition are two-phase at 700 C and prolonged heat treatment of them at 700°C would tend to produce inhomogeneity rather than homogeneity. In Figs. 4 and 7, the composition ranges of the zirconium, hafnium, and niobium alloys examined terminate at alloy concentrations of 0.1 to 0.2 at. pct. These metals form very stable oxides and their partial removal from solid solution in iron by impurity oxygen may be expected. We believe that the authors should have reported the procedure by which they distinguished the amounts of alloying elements in solution and in oxide. The diagrams pertaining to copper in Figs. 3 and 18 (lower) are almost certainly incorrect. Three recent investigations of this system38-40 all substantially agree on the solubility of copper in a iron, finding it to be much larger than that reported by Abrahamson and Lopata. The change of the lattice parameter with composition reported by Abrahamson and Lopata is too large by a factor of three to five, as seen by comparison with the findings of other investigators.41738 Moreover, the authors violate, in Fig. 18, the accepted Fe-Cu constitution diagram37 by ignoring the eutectoid at about 850°C.

A discussion of modern developments in beneficiation of fine sizes of anthracite, this paper includes a description of the plant flowsheet, an analysis of operating results, and a summary of fundamentals of mineral separation relative to plant operation. DURING the past several years Lehigh Naviga-tion Coal Co. has installed equipment at Tamaqua and Lansford collieries for cleaning and sizing No. 4 buckwheat —3/32 + 3/64 in. and for recovering and cleaning flotation coal —20 + 200 mesh at Tamaqua colliery. Papers describing some of these installations have been presented to AIME. At Coaldale colliery, however, methods used to clean fine coal were inadequate and inefficient. Management decided upon a thorough investigation of all existing processes before building a plant to treat the combined three sizes mentioned. Investigation, carried out on company property and at other plants, entailed a study of hydrotators, hydroclassifiers, tables, spirals, flotation machines, methods of screening, and methods of dewatering. On the basis of this investigation a flowsheet was designed which necessarily excluded many processes in use, and the writers wish to emphasize that no criticism is implied by omission of processes or machines. A determining factor in selection of many machines was the policy of standardizing equipment wherever possible. Flowsheet and Operational Data The first principle to be considered in designing of any plant is efficiency of cleaning as related to laws of classification. Beneficiation of coal may be described as separation of two materials having different specific gravities. Although there is an inherent ash content even in the purest coal which slightly affects its specific gravity, it is recognized that many particles are true middlings. The percentage of these particles allowable in the final product depends upon the ultimate ash, or specifications of the consumer. Richards in his study of free settling and hindered settling classification' determined that particles of equal size and different specific gravities had unequal settling velocities. He also determined a definite size relationship for equal settling velocities with free settling and hindered settling conditions. Considering the design of machines used to clean No. 4 and No. 5 buckwheat, it may be assumed that both free settling and hindered settling conditions exist and that ratio of size for practical operations is between the established values. The essential factor is that the more efficiently and closely sized the feed is maintained, the more nearly perfect the resulting separation. Flowsheet design was governed primarily by factors related to the 1200 to 1500 tons per hr feed to the main plant. It should be stressed that because of the many sources of supply from mine and stripping, the physical characteristics of this feed varied considerably. The most significant influence was varying percentage of fines, necessitating that all machines be capable of operating under maximum peak load during periods of surge. Since cleaning practice is a wet process, about 9000 gal per min containing 14 to 15 pct solids, or 350 tons per hr, must be treated. This slurry contained all the fines, or —3/32 in., but also percentages of oversize, up to 1 % in., dependent on spills or breaks in screen jackets, a not uncommon occurrence in preparation plant practice. The flowsheet developed is shown in Fig. 1. Circled numbers represent points of sampling. Table I gives operational data including size, ash by size, composite ash, rate of flow in gallons per minute, percent solids dry weight, and average tons of solids per hour. It should be noted that these results are subject to human error in sampling practice. Detailed information reported is a representative evaluation of plant operation.

THE orientation dependence of work hardening has previously been studied over the entire range, i.e., including special orientations of high symmetry, in aluminum1-3 and silver.* The differences between various orientations are substantial, and the trend is the same in all fcc crystals. However, there are quantitative differences in behavior between aluminum and silver at room temperature, particularly in the (100) orientation. While many experiments on gold have been reported,5'9 none included the special orientations. We therefore undertook tension tests on gold crystals of the axial orientations (100),(110), (Ill), (211), and, as a representative of single slip, one whose Schmid factor was 0.5 (hereafter referred to as m = 0.5). Single crystals of dimensions 1/4 by .1/4 by 6 in. were grown from the melt1' at a rate of 4 in. per hr, using gold of 99.99 pct purity obtained from Handy and Harman. A growth rate of 1/8 in. per hr, or a purity of 99.999 pct,ll produced no difference in results. The crystals were annealed at 1000°C in air for 24 hr and furnace-cooled down to room temperature, after which they were electro-polished in a solution of potassium cyanide (40 g), potassium ferrocyanide (10 g), soda (20 g), and enough distilled water to make 1 liter of solution, at a current density of 0.02 amp per sq mm. After 2 or 3 hr, a very smooth surface was obtained by this method. Nine m = 0.5, two (loo), one (110), three (Ill), and one (211; crystals were tested at room temperature in a floor-model Instron machine at a tensile strain rate of 0.5 pct per min. The accuracy of the stress measurement was k10 g per sq mm up to 500 g per sq mm, k2 pct for higher stresses. The strain measurement was accurate to t2 pct. The scatter of stress at a given strain among the crystals of the same orientation was small, *5 pct being the largest. The representative stress-strain curves for various orientations are shown in Fig. 1. Table I summarizes the work-hardening parameters as used by seeger.12 Results of other investigators are also included in this table for comparison. There are no previous data for the corner orientations. Values for m = 0.5 crystals agree fairly well with those of Berner. Tm is defined as the stress at which the stress-strain curve begins to deviate from linearity of Stage 11. However, in practice this is a very difficult value to estimate because each investigator has a different idea of linearity. Therefore, the comparison with the values of other investigators may not be valid. In the present experiment, (100) crystals had the highest 111, followed by (111) crystals. The work-hardening rate in Stage I1 was highest for the (111) crystal followed by the (100) crystals. Our value for 0x1 of m = 0.5 orientation agrees very well with those of other investigators. 1) Single-Slip orientation (m = 0.5). These crystals were oriented so that the primary-slip vector was contained in one side face. The dimension perpendicular to this side should then not change if single slip indeed takes place. Within the accuracy of measurement, this dimension did not change during the deformation. Since the accuracy is k0.2 pct, the amount of secondary slip is less than 0.7 pct of the slip on the primary-slip system at 30 pct tensile strain. This is in conformity with the results obtained by Kocks" for aluminum crystals. The tensile axis moved toward (211) during the deformation. Slip bands, Fig. 2(a), were very fine and closely spaced. Some deformation bands were observed. There were no clear-cut cross-slip traces such as the ones observed on aluminum m = 0.5 crystals. 2) (111) Crystals. The orientation of the tensile axis was stable during the deformation. From this observation, one can deduce that at least three slip systems must have operated, and probably all six because the remaining three all have cross-slip relation to one of the first three.' It was very difficult to observe the slip markings. Consequently, we could not confirm by this method that six systems were operative during the deformation. At high strains (above 50 pct shear strain), this orientation had the highest stress-strain curve. At 80

The recent research with which this paper deals has been concerned with the preparation of pure PbTe crystals suitable for control of radiative processes and othe.v electronic applications. The research has been directed toward the developrnent of methods for the preparation of puve, homogeneous, loul-ca,wier-density PbTe crystals suitable for use in the fabrication of optically pumped and electrically pumped diode lasers. Steps in the preparation of the crystals include 1) purification of the starting materials, 2) synthesis and purification of the PbTe, 3) growoth of PbTe crystals, and 4) adjustt~zertt of composition of the crystals This Paper describes the general preparation procedure employed and discusses some investigntiotzs of purification processes. THE as-received lead and tellurium are nominally 99.999 to 99.9999 pct pure. Assays furnished by the suppliers, obtained by emission spectrographic analysis, show only the presence of about 2 ppm Mg in the tellurium. Such analyses are not very informative, however, since they give no information on the concentrations of normally gaseous impurity elements such as oxygen. Both the lead and the tellurium in the as-received state usually contain appreciable concentrations of oxygen—primarily in the form of oxides on the surfaces of the material. To reduce the oxygen content, the lead is held in the molten state in hydrogen at -700°C for several hours. For this treatment, the lead is contained in a graphite boat which is rf-heated, and the hydrogen is passed through a liquid-nitrogen trap prior to use. Tellurium is subjected to multiple distillation in hydrogen to remove oxygen and other foreign impurities. If, in conducting the distillation, approximately the last 10 pct of the charge at each "stage" is left as the discard cut, purification of the tellurium proceeds as indicated in Fig. 1.l Tellurium used in this work has been distilled two or three times to reduce carrier concentration to about 10" per cu cm. The PbTe is prepared from the purified elements by reacting them in the molten state in sealed, evacuated, or hydrogen-filled silica ampoules. The charge is usually held above the melting point of PbTe (923°C) at 1000 C for 24 hr to ensure that it has been homogenized. Two methods have been employed for the growth of the required single crystals of PbTe: growth from the melt, which will be discussed first, and growth from the vapor phase. Large single crystals of p-type PbTe can be grown readily from the melt by the Bridgman method. For this method of crystal growth, the PbTe is synthesized in situ from proper proportions of the purified elements. Growth (dropping) rates in the range 1.3 to 6.5 mm per hr are employed. Material near the maximum melting composition (about 50.012 at. pct Te) is utilized to avoid composition change on freezing, and thus to obtain crystals of nearly uniform composition. Crystals prepared by use of procedures described up to this point were sufficiently pure and perfect that they could be used for the preparation of laser crystals in studies at Lincoln Laboratory.2-5 ADJUSTMENT OF COMPOSITION Good n-type crystals of PbTe cannot readily be grown from the melt. Further, growth from the melt of crystals of any compositions (n or p type) other than those near the maximum melting composition is difficult because of the large composition changes that must occur on freezing.'" However, melt-grown crystals can rapidly be brought to other desired compositions by isothermal equilibration through the vapor phase with a two-phase Pb-Te stock material, essentially as described by Brebrick and Allgaier.1 The work to be discussed has been concerned with the preparation of n-type crystals; thus, the two-phase stock which was employed contained excess lead, and all ensuing discussion is of the preparation and properties of n-type crystals. The equilibration was designed to the shift composition to the lead-rich limit of stability at the selected temperature. Initial treatment of the crystals at high temperature was employed to minimize the total time required for the equilibration. Final adjustments of the composition and state of the crystals were made by use of low-temperature heat treatment at temperatures in the range 200" to

The coarsening of cementite particles in a ferrite matrix has been studied in a series of steels with 0.15 pct C only and 0.15 pct C plus 1 pct Ni, Mn, and Cr, respectively. Two initial states were employed: quenched nartensite, and quenched and cold-rolled martensite. A series of tempering temperatures between 500' and 700" and tempering times of up to 190 hr were used. The structures were studied by replica and transmission electron microscopy. Particle size distribution curves were determined. From the average size value coarsening curves were obtained. These were plotted in accordance with the Wagner analysis assuming diffusion control. A discussion of the significance of the results is given. L HE reactions occuring upon the tempering of martensite have long engaged the attention of metallurgists. The latter stages, when cementite particles coarsen in a ferrite matrix, have been studied both qualitatively and quantitatively. Studies of such coarsening processes have recently been spurred by the publication of the Lifshitz-Wagner theory1, and the extension of this to the a Fe-Fe3C system by Oriani3 and by Li, Blakely, and einold. Following Wagner the coarsening process is often designated as "Ostwald Ripening". The only quantitative data on the rate of coarsening, except for the work of Hyam and uttin,' in the a Fe-Fe3C system are those of Bannyh, Modin, and odin' for a commercial eutectoid steel and those of Heckel and ereorio" using a pure eutectoid steel. The data of Bannyh, Modin, and Modin have been employed by 0riani3 to derive the a Fe-FeE interface energy. The reaction is one of the most important ones in steel and is worthy of detailed study. This is the purpose of the present study. Laboratory heats were prepared; these were steels with approximately 0.15 pct C, selected so that the num ber of carbide particles would be relatively small and thus so that the overlapping diffusion fluxes would be minimized, presumably a desirable circumstance.'-3 In addition to Fe-C alloys, comparable heats containing 1 pct of Ni, Mn, and Cr, respectively, were included with a view of appraising the effect of alloying elements. This report includes an account of the micro-structures observed, primarily with the electron microscope, and of kinetic data and their interpretation. MATERIALS AND TREATMENT The alloys were prepared from electrolytic iron ("Plastiron") and high-purity graphite; these were melted in a zirconia crucible using a vacuum furnace. The alloy steels were made by adding electrolytic nickel, electrolytic manganese, and "vacuum grade" chromium, respectively, under a partial pressure of argon. Each melt was poured into a mold within the vacuum furnace and cooled in the mold. The ingots were 2 in. in diam. and 8 to 10 in. long. The analysis of the alloys is given in Table I. These ingots were hot-rolled to strip 0.1 in. thick, then cold-rolled to 0.05 in. and each alloy split into two batches. One batch was austenitized at 1200 for 1 min, quenched in cold brine, then cold-rolled to 0.02 in.; samples given this treatment are hereinafter designated as "worked". The other batch was cold-rolled to 0.025 in., austenitized at 1200" for 1 min, and quenched in cold brine; such samples are hereinafter designated as "quenched". These two batches were then tempered, as below. The purpose of the treatment given the first batch was to provide an initial structure of cold-worked martensite, with the expectation that the additional defect structure created by cold work would encourage a higher rate of nucleation of cementite on tempering and hence a more uniform distribution of cementite particles. Individual specimens were sealed in evacuated quartz or Pyrex tubes, then tempered in a muffle furnace. The temperature control was better than 3'C at 700. Tempering treatments wer: performed at 400°, 500°, 550°, 600°, 65o°, and 700C for time periods between 15 min and 190 hr. PREPARATION OF SPECIMENS Specimens for optical and replicalelectron microscopy were mounted, polished conventionally, and etched with 2 pct nital. For electron microscopy, single-stage "formvar" replicas were made, dry-stripped and rotary-shadowed with chromium at an angle of 30 deg. Carbide extraction replicas were prepared from electropolished specimens usirig the method described by Smith and uttin.' Thin foils for electron transmission microscopy were prepared by chemical thinning in an H202-HF bath prior to electropolishing in a chromium trioxide-acetic acid solution. The most

The discovery and development of explosives mark one of the most important findings in the history of civilization. Without explosives our vast economic enterprise concerning the mining of coal, copper, iron, aluminum, and various other ores could not function. Explosives are used in all kinds of construction works, in the razing of old buildings, blasting of trenches, driving of tunnels, and in many other instances common to our everyday life. For these reasons explosives are rightfully referred to as the forerunner of progress. An explosive may be defined as a substance (usually a mixture) that, when flame or shock is applied, yields readily to rapid combustion or oxidation, accompanied by the formation of such relatively large quantities of gases as to produce much violence and pressure which, in turn, react against their surroundings and cause what is termed an explosion. By their very nature the action of explosives is destructive and disruptive of adjacent materials. Decomposition of explosives can occur through deflagration, which is rapid burning or combustion, as in the case of black powder, or through detonation, which is an almost instantaneous disruption, as in the case of dynamites and blasting agents. HISTORY OF BLASTING WITH EXPLOSIVES At one time workmen obtained stone blocks for building by grooving the rock with crude picks, driving wooden wedges into niches in the rock, and pouring water on the wedges; the swelling of the wood forced out the blocks. As late as the 17th century, fires were placed against the face of rock to crack it, and water was sometimes dashed on the heated rock to shatter it by sudden cooling. SEVERAL investigations have been made concerning the effect of oxygen on the mechanical properties of titanium 1-6= In particular, the yield strength has received considerable attention. Finlay and snyder2 report a 0.2 pet strain offset yield strength if 49 kg per sq mm in titanium containing 0.1 pct 0 and 61 kg per sq mm in titanium with 0.2 Pct 0. These results are in good agreement with those of Jaffee, Odgen, and Maykuth3 who report values of yield strength

AS methods for measuring fiber textures become more exact, it becomes justifiable to scrutinize an observed pole-density curve for evidence of minor texture components. These are disclosed by minor maxima or abnormally broad major maxima. One possible source of these minor components is twinning of the main component. In cubic metals and alloys, there are two kinds of twins: 1) Annealing twins in face-centered cubic metals. These are reflection twins on {Ill), and they can be expected to be present in recrystallization textures. 2) Deformation twins in body-centered cubic metals. These are shear twins on (112). Although usually formed only by impact, they might conceivably be present in the deformation texture of severely cold-drawn wire. Fortunately, both kinds of twinning lead to the same orientation relationships. It thus becomes possible to prepare a single list of angles between various planes in parent crystal and twin, which is helpful in examining pole-density curves for evidence of twinning in any cubic metal or alloy. Such a list of interplanar angles is given in Table I. This table consists of three parts, corresponding to the three major texture components—<100>, <110>, and <111>-most commonly found in the fiber textures of cubic metals. THE method of thermal analysis, so important in the development of metallographic science, has of recent years been falling into disuse owing to the development of other physical methods which give results easier of interpretation and which can be used for the study of either equilibrium or transitional conditions because they do not require a continuously changing temperature. Nevertheless thermal analysis remains useful in the study of reactions that take place rapidly, and the simplicity of the experimental technique and the general availability of the apparatus involved are points in its favor. Theoretically, thermal analysis is capable of giving specific and latent heat measurements and therefore should permit the study of reactions on a more fundamental basis than any other method. It is, however, difficult or impossible to obtain quantitative heat measurements from cooling curves obtained in the usual way. Even if the furnace containing the sample is cooled or heated at a linear rate, or if a gradient furnace is employed to maintain a constant rate over a large range of tempera-ture, the heat flow from or to the specimen depends on its previous his-tory, for the difference of temperature between the specimen and its surroundings varies. The emissivity of the specimen surface, moreover, is unlikely to be constant. The able mathematical analysis by Russell,1 although it prevents misinterpretation of data, has an effect rather the reverse of that intended, and leaves the reader doubtful of the possibility of ever obtaining quantitative results from thermal curves. Nothing can be done to apply thermal analysis to the study of equilib-rium conditions of reactions that are not completed at rates of tempera-ture change below about 1° C. per minute, and this unfortunately excludes most solid transformations in alloys. ? For some time attempts have been made to improve drilling efficiency (and therefore reduce costs) by introducing certain reagents to the flushing medium. Much of this interest is the result of the Russian book, Hardness Reducers in Drilling, by Rehbinder, Schreiner, and Zhigach, published in 1944. Before embarking on full-scale drilling tests, it was decided to investigate the effects on the tensile strength; these results would help in the selection of the proper reagent and its optimum concentration. Selection of Tensile Strength Testing A drilling system basically performs two separate operations: 1) Breakage of rock. 2) Removal of the broken pieces of rock. Both affect drilling and drill performance but are distinct and separate phases of the process. Causing rock to break during drilling is a matter of generating sufficient stress with a drill bit to exceed the strength of the rock. This strength of the rock may be termed its drilling strength; it is not equivalent to any of the well-known strength parameters. Various criteria have been employed to measure the efficiency of a given drilling system or for comparing different systems and one of the most important criteria is "speed of drilling." Speed of drilling is a function of drilling strength of the rock. Many researchers have tried to correlate the speed of drilling with the strength properties of rock and compressive as well as tensile strength values have been found to give reasonable correlation." As the strength of rock drilled increases, speed decreases. As the Brazilian testing requires the least amount of core, this test was selected. Material Tested Broken Hill lode quartzite has been used in these tests. It is composed chiefly of quartz with varying amounts of sericite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, galena, and garnet. The total porosity of this quartzite is about 11%.

ALL, of the prospects that later became mines in the Ducktown district were discovered prior to 1854, and most of them were exploited before the turn of the century. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss the exploration and current development of the Boyd mine, discovered in 1853. It is in the heart of the Ducktown Basin, in the extreme southeast corner of Tennessee, and is being developed by the Tennessee Copper Co. GEOLOGY The geology of the district has been fully described in many papers. Probably the most complete description is that of Emmons and Laney.1 The rocks of the district are considered to be of Lower Cambrian age and are a part of the Great Smoky formation, consisting mainly of interbedded graywacke and mica schist, in which the ore deposits occur. The ore bodies are included in an area of about 6 sq. miles, 2 miles wide and 3 miles long striking N. 45° E., and may be grouped into three general lode systems. The northeast system, including the East Tennessee, London and Burra Burra ore bodies, and the southeast group, comprising the Polk County, Mary and Calloway deposits, are all characterized by relatively high copper values. The ores of the central system, which includes the Eureka, Boyd, Old Tennessee and Cherokee ore bodies, are low in copper and high in total sulphide content. Boyd mine lies roughly halfway between the Old Tennessee and Eureka ore bodies [ ] and 2500 ft. in the hanging wall of the Burra Burra mine (Fig. 1). In the course of a return flight from Olympia, Wash., to Laramie, Wyo., an airborne magnetometer profile was recorded continuously. The level of flight was controlled at barometric levels along segments of the flight. Barometric altitude was changed from 3000 ft to a maximum of 12,000 ft above mean sea level to take care of topographic variations. Terrain clearance varied from 800 to 7300 ft. Horizontal positions were obtained by recording and tying to cities, towns, airports, river crossings, and other landmarks in the course of the flight. Figs. 1-6 show the course of the flight and the general geologic and tectonic features traversed. The flight line begins south of Olympia, Wash., and proceeds south across the Puget-Willemette depression to the Columbia River. Thence it proceeds eastward along the Washington-Oregon border across the Cascade Mts. and lava flows and the Umatilla basin to Pendleton, Ore. From Pendleton it traverses the Blue Mts. uplift of Oregon in a southeasterly direction, and then to the Boise basin of southwestern Idaho. The flight line swings in an easterly direction as it passes over the Snake River downwarp to the south of the Idaho batholith. It then passes over the northern portion of the Great Basin and the heavily overthrust area at the intersection of the Utah, Idaho, and Wyoming borders. The flight then assumes an easterly course to cross the series of basins and uplifts of southern Wyoming and terminates near the western flank of the Laramie uplift.

CRUSHING has always been a major operation in the chemical and metallurgical industries, yet little is known about the theory of crushing, and today, the design of crushers is still based almost entirely on empirical knowledge and accumulated practical experience. In view of the increasing national need for the economic working of poorer grades of ores, the lack of a fundamental under- standing of this unit operation hardly presents a satisfactory situation. Basic investigations of crushing have been concerned mainly with three phases of the problem, 1-the mechanism of the fracture process itself, 2- the particle size distribution of the crushed product, and 3-the relationship between the energy input and the amount of new surface produced. Probably adequate information on these phases will be required for a comprehensive understanding of the process of crushing. A bibliography covering these phases will be given as well as a review of the work done in recent years at the University of Minnesota on the relationship between the energy input for crushing and the amount of new surface produced.

OIL-FIELD waters enter into many underground problems with which the petroleum engineer has to deal. Whether the problem is one of infiltration or natural encroachment, it is always desirable to determine the source of the water before commencing repair or remedial work. The usual mechanical tests for determining the source of extraneous water in wells are slow and expensive. An excellent means for the identification of oil-field waters may be afforded by their chemical characteristics when the chemical character of waters from the various sands has been established, by careful sampling and analysis cautiously interpreted. In the Salt Creek field, Wyoming, a fairly high degree of efficiency has been attained in the controlof field operations by utilizing the information afforded by the analysis. All of the operating companies appreciate this means of identifying waters, with the result that water-sampling has become general practice. Most of the chemical work dealing with Salt Creek waters has been done since the laboratories of the Midwest Refining Co. and the U. S. Geological Survey, were established in the field; the former in 1922, the latter in 1924. A spirit of cooperation has existed between the company and the government personnel by which many of the data for this paper were made available.

The Elk City district is in north-central Idaho about 60 miles east of Grangeville and near the headwaters of the South Fork of the Clearwater River (Fig. 1). At the height of its boom in the early sixties, Elk City had a population of more than 2000 people, Published estimates of the placer production from the district range from $10,000,000 to $18,500,000. Although the first quartz-vein location was made as early as 1870, very little gold was extracted from quartz ores until after the completion of the American Eagle mill in 1902. Between 1902 and 1932 a total of from $750,000 to $1,000,000 was taken from about six properties. General Geology Distribution of Rocks Banded gneiss (Fig. 2) is the most aburldant bedrock in the Elk City district. It is interbedded with schist and quartzite and ill some places these rocks have been intruded by sills and dikes. Banded gneiss prevails in the western part of the area whereas schist prevails to the southeast. Augen gneiss occurs for the most part as irregular bodies, which lie transverse to the trend of the banded gneiss and schist. It is largely confined to two areas; one of which extends from east of the American Eagle mine westward as far as the Black Pine mine, a total distance of about five miles, and another area of about two square miles in the vicinity of the California-Idaho placer mine. Quartzite is fairly abundant. In addition to the bands of the latter interbedded with gneiss and schist, some large lenses crop out in the southeastern part of the dik-trict near the southern contact of the area underlain by granodiorite. Granodiorite crops out over a large area and extends northeastward

With increased coal production and mechanization of coal mines many transportation problems arise. The main objective is to bring the coal to the tipple or dump it as quickly as possible. Larger and faster haulage locomotives or two locomotives connected in tandem have been adopted to solve the problem. Motor equipment, gears and control systems of locomotives to be placed on these hauls are carefully studied to meet these requirements, by an analysis of motor characteristic curves with the corresponding tractive effort curves, in order to determine the correct load for maximum efficiency and to determine the approximate schedule. Control equipment is usually considered to be the controller and resistance. Sometimes accelerating curves are calculated in order to obtain smooth starting in the least possible time without slipping the wheels. Train control is very important, but why limit this to acceleration ? Deceleratien-or-retardation of the locomotive is a part of the train control and should be given as much consideration as the control for acceleration. Types or Braking Common braking systems for mine locomotives utilize screw-type mechanical brakes, dynamic braking and the air brake. For gathering and haulage locomotives, the srrew-type mechanical brake is regarded as standard. A brake of this kind cannot be applied without much effort and lapse of time. Motormen, like other people, follow the path of least resistance, and therefore have their brakes ready for instant application—which means that the shoes are virtually dragging. Even then, a motorman bucks and plugs the motors to gain time and avoid as much physical effort as possible. "Bucking of motors" consists in turning the reverse cylinder of the controller to parallel position corresponding to the opposite direction of travel while the locomotive is in motion, without applying power from an external source. When this occurs, both motors tend to act as series generators, because the armatures are revolving and there is residual magnetism in the field circuit. Owing to slight differences in motor manufacture, one of these will generate a slightly higher potential and will overcome the generated voltage of the second and tend to drive it as a motor in the reverse Direction.-This action retards the locomotive but is very severe on the segments of the reverse cylinder and on the motor commutators. "Plugging motors" is the application of power to the motors corresponding to the opposite direction of travel. In order to "plug" the motors it is necessary first to "buck,, them (which reverses the connections to the motors) and then to apply power. Theoretically, this should be done only in an emergency, but locomotives in mine service are frequently thus treated., Dynamic braking is retardation of the locomotive by the motors acting as generators, which take no power from the line.
