"To better understand the mechanical behavior of the compression deformation of backfill under high stresses corresponding to large depths, consolidation compression tests were performed for cemented tailings backfill with a cement-sand ration of 1:10 and 30% water under confined conditions. After applying different loading stress functions from 0.5 MPa to 32 MPa, the final axial deformation of the test specimen of backfill was obtained, and the micromorphology of backfill was studied before and after consolidation by scanning electron microscopy. Additionally, fitting analysis was performed for backfill confined compression deformation data and device model constitutive equations by the minimum square law. The constitutive model was revised according to the analysis results. The research results indicate that, as the load increases, the void ratio e obeys the functional relationship e=alnt + b (where a and b are fitting constants and t is compression time). Under the high-stress conditions of confinement, the constitutive model of backfill consolidation and creep can be used to describe the creep behavior of the backfill. Under high-stress conditions, after the consolidation of the confined backfill, the space between the tailing particles diminishes, the particles becomes more compact, and particle slippage occurs. INTRODUCTION With the depletion of shallow mineral resources, the mining industry has gradually shifted to deep mining (Zhang, Li, An, and Huang, 2010). Furthermore, with the continuous introduction of sustainable development policies regarding development and utilization of mineral resources, the mining industry must protect the limited available land and make full use of mineral resources as much as possible (Sijing, 1994; Zhihua, 2009). Backfill mining technology offers an unparalleled advantage in fully recovering mineral resources, controlling pressures, and improving environmental protection. As a result, this method has been widely used in various countries in the world (Burd, 2002; Benzaazoua, et al., 2008). Of the underground mines in the world, 45% of the large and medium-sized non-ferrous-metal mines and 37% of the gold mines use backfilling (Fuhrman, et al., 2014; Khaldoun, Ouadif, Baba, and Bahi, 2016). In addition, 45% of underground non-ferrous-metal mines and 37% of the gold mines use the filling method (Mchaina, Januszewski, and Hallam, 2001). According to incomplete statistics, more than 80 metal mines operate at a depth of more than 1 km; the depths of several typical deep mines are shown in Figure 1 (Burd, 2002; Fall, et al., 2009)."

"Longwall mining is by far the most common method of underground coal extraction in Australia. The industry trends and expectations are placing increasing emphasis on the reliability and productivity of these operations. The longwalls are becoming wider and longer while retreat rates are continuously increasing due to significant improvements achieved in longwall equipment reliability and automation. This increased longwall productivity is placing significant emphasis on the reliability of longwall panel development.Although there have been significant improvements in the reliability of continuous miners and hydraulic drill rigs, the traditional resin encapsulated bolt installation is still the principal method used in all major coal-producing countries around the world. Anglo American realised an opportunity existed to introduce an alternative roof bolt installation technique called “spin to stall” in Australia. Spin to stall was first introduced in Anglo American Coal in South Africa where it has been successfully used for over a decade, though implementation of South African spin to stall resin in Australia has proven to be near impossible due to a significant difference in geotechnical conditions, mining method, and, subsequently, roof bolting equipment. Therefore, a new spin to stall development project was initiated between Anglo American Coal and Jennmar Australia (SPIN2STALL®). This paper summarises the journey of this project, the results, and the successful implementation of spin to stall achieved at Grasstree Mine.INTRODUCTIONThe Anglo American Coal business unit operates Grasstree and Moranbah North underground longwall mines in the Bowen Basin of Central Queensland, with a third longwall mine, Grosvenor, currently being developed, and two more (Aquila and Moranbah South) in the project pipeline. The vision for Anglo American is to achieve “Zero Harm” through the effective management of safety at all operations, while for the coal business unit, at the same time to achieve industry-leading operational performance. Currently, both Grasstree and Moranbah North longwalls are operating at industry best practice rates. This is placing increased pressure on the development process to allow such high productivity levels to be sustainable."

"Rock fall related accidents continue to occur in coal mines, although artificial support mechanisms have been used extensively [1]. Roof stability is primarily determined in many underground mines by a limited number of methods that often resort to subjective criteria. It is argued in this paper that stability conditions of mine roof strata, as a key factor in coal mines, must be determined by a survey which proactively investigates fundamental aspects.Failure of rock around the opening happens as a result of both high rock stress conditions and the presence of structural discontinuities. The properties of such discontinuities affect the engineering behavior of rock masses causing wedges or blocks to fall from the roof or slide out of the walls [2]. A practical rule based approach to assess the risk of a roof fall is proposed in the paper. The method is based on the analysis of structural data and the geometry and stability of wedges in underground coal mines. In this regard, an accident causing a huge collapse in a coal mine leading to four fatalities is illustrated by way of a case study. A comprehensive investigation of the hanging wall has been gathered through a systematic collection of evidence. The investigation results are then analyzed, and an interpretation of the evidence gathered is provided.For this purpose, horizontal and vertical profiles are prepared by geophysical methods to define the falling zone and its boundaries. The collapse is then modeled by the use of sophisticated computer programs in order to identify the causes of the accident and hence recommend corrective actions to prevent or minimize reoccurrence probability of similar accidents. The corrective measures are placed into a rule-based framework for the benefit of the mine operators.INTRODUCTIONRoof rock failure has generally been the most dangerous hazard for underground coal mining in the world. Failure of rock around shallow coal mine openings often results from loosening of blocks of rock on the weakened planes under the influence of gravity. This condition is not typically seen in large deep coal mines. There are a number of differences between large mechanized mines and small mines related to ground control [3]."

The Solar No. 7 and Solar No. 10 mines were designed to prevent mine waters from directly discharging to the surface. In January of 2004, a discharge occurred as the Solar No. 7 mine was in its final stage of flooding through a barrier averaging 456-ft in width over a 1,600-ft length (No. 1). Another barrier (No. 2) was designed to protect four municipal water wells operating 1,800- ft away and producing from within or slightly below the Upper Kittanning coalbed from the adjacent Solar No. 7 and No. 10 mine pools. These two barriers were selected for this study because of varied mine layouts, mining methods, and geology factors affecting their performance. Analysis was aided by the collection and georeferencing of 6-month mining maps from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PA DEP). A structure contour map of the Upper Kittanning coalbed was constructed from mine map elevation points. These data and 2-ft surface contour maps were used to measure the precise location of the coal outcrop. The actual discharge point was as little as 425-ft away from a thinpillar section and 475-ft away from a pillar recovery section. The discharge point was found to be located slightly above the coal, indicating that the drainage path was at least partially through the strata directly above the Upper Kittanning coalbed. Hydraulic conductivities and potential discharge pathways are analyzed and discussed. The possible factors influencing the performance of the down-dip barriers at Solar No. 7 and Solar No. 10 are: a) the width of the barrier, b) the applied hydraulic gradient, c) the type of mining adjacent to the barrier, d) the overburden, e) the pattern and characteristics of fractures, and f) the quality of waters contained within the mine pools. This study, part of a larger effort funded by the Appalachian Research Initiative for Environmental Sciences (ARIES), is tasked to determine the key factors responsible for the successful design of down-dip coal barriers.

"An underground coal mine located in New South Wales has a target coal seam located 160-180 m deep directly below a 16-20 m thick conglomerate unit that has been associated with significant periodic weighting events on the longwall face. As part of the investigations to better understand the causes of periodic weighting at the mine, inclinometers capable of measuring horizontal shear movements through the full section of the overburden strata were installed ahead of mining at two locations approximately 1 km apart above the centre of two longwall panels. These inclinometers were monitored as the longwall approached each site. This paper presents the details of the installation, the results of the inclinometer monitoring at both sites, and the insights that these measurements provide for overburden behaviour about longwall panels.Horizontal shear movements were observed to develop on shear horizons that correlate closely across the two sites suggesting a mechanism that is consistent across a large area of the mine. Shear movements were observed to develop on a single horizon near the top of the conglomerate strata that was mobilised almost immediately after initial formation of the longwall goaf at a distance of 425 m ahead of the longwall face. The direction of horizontal movement was consistent with the relief of the major principal horizontal stress. As the longwall face approached each inclinometer, other horizons within the upper part of the overburden strata begin to shear with the upper strata moving toward the approaching goaf more than the lower strata. Within the last 30 m of longwall approach, tilting of the strata associated with the increase in vertical subsidence toward the extracted goaf caused a change in the style of deformation with tilting and reverse shear offsets.INTRODUCTIONLongwall mining is recognised from subsidence monitoring, surface extensometer measurements, and various other observations to cause significant disturbance to the overburden strata directly above the extracted goaf of each longwall panel. Disturbance to the overburden strata beyond the limits of each longwall panel is not so well understood. Subsidence monitoring indicates that horizontal movements beyond the edges of the extracted longwall panel are generally greater in magnitude than vertical subsidence and horizontal movements may extend up to several kilometres from the edge of the panel in some circumstances (Reid 1998, Reid 2001, Hebblewhite et al 2000, Mills 2001, Mills 2014). The mechanics of how these movements are accommodated within the overburden strata is only poorly understood and there are few direct measurements."

Considering the importance of a fully mechanized depillaring operation, the Indian coal mining industry has introduced a number of such depillaring operations at depths of cover ranging from 60 m to 377 m. The overlying strata of these depillaring faces vary widely from highly laminated, weak and easily caveable to massive, strong and difficult to cave. Most of these mechanized depillaring operations were carried out in difficult site conditions, however, performance monitoring in the field has showed good production, productivity and safety results. Field studies have shown that the use of roof bolts as breaker line support for this technology worked well for moderate strength overlying roof strata, but experienced difficulties for both extremely weak and strong/massive overlying roof strata. It is observed that the performance of a breaker line support along the goaf edge deteriorated with an increase in depth of cover of the depillaring face. Practice of a straight line of extraction (single row of pillars) during the mechanized depillaring below competent roof strata experienced a considerably large hanging area inside the goaf, which needs to be managed either by induced caving of the roof strata or through an increase in width of the excavation. Observations of good performance of a fully mechanized depillaring face under highly laminated and weak strata at a shallow cover is mainly due to a faster rate of extraction. However, the mechanized depillaring underneath laminated and weak roof strata for a deep-seated coal seam was forced to go for partial extraction mainly due to strata control problems. Discussing the implications of main technical and operational differences between the conventional (semi-mechanized) and fully mechanized depillaring, this paper presents results of different strata control studies conducted at different mechanized depillaring sites with varying geo-mining conditions.

"For the purpose of studying the strata behavior due to multislicing top coal caving longwall mining along-the-strike direction in steeply dipping extra thick coal seams, the shield support pressures of the upper and lower slices of Panel 37220 in Dongxia coal mine were monitored using the KJ513 dynamic monitoring system. The set up rooms adopted the ""horizontal line-arc segmentinclined line"" form and used different types of shield supports. The results showed that the strata pressure of upper slice Panel 37220- 1 changed slightly along the strike direction, while along the dip direction it exhibited strong to weak pressure from bottom to top. The first weighting interval oflower slice Panel 37220-2 was about 60.Sm, and the average periodic weighting interval were about 22.6m. The strata behavior of Panel 37330-2 exhibited a spatiotemporal characteristic in that periodic weighting occurred first in the middle-upper part, followed by the middle and upper parts, arc segment, and finally the lower part. During the periodic weighting, the weighting interval and intensity also exhibited strong space characteristics. The average dynamic load coefficient was 1.48 and the maximum lateral pressure of the side shield was 900Kn1000kN.INTRODUCTIONThe steeply dipping coal seams account for about 20% of proven reserves and 10% of output in China (Wu, et al, 2014). About 50% of coal mines in the western China have steeply dipping seams, and are mainly distributed in Sichuan, Gansu, and Chongqing. When the steeply dipping seam employs longwall mining along the strike direction is employed, the waste rocks fill the gob nonhomogeneously along the dip direction, the deformation and caving of surrounding rocks exhibit obvious asymmetry and spatio-temporal characteristics with particular and complex strata behavior. In recent years, many research on strata behavior due to multi-slicing top coal caving longwall mining along-the-strike direction in steeply dipping extra thick coal seams have been performed with significant results (Shi, 1999; Wu, Xie, and Ren, 2010; Wu, Xie, Wang, and Ren, 2010). However, there has been a complete lack of research on monitoring the strata behavior due to multi-slicing top coal caving longwall mining in steeply dipping extra thick coal seam. Therefore, the strata behavior of multi-slicing panels 37220-1 and 37220-2 was systematically investigated in this research."

"As the International Conference on Ground Control in Mining (ICGCM) enters its 35th year in 2015, it is time to look back and identify the areas that need to be emphasized and to look forward to see what areas need to be researched in the future. In the past three decades, ground control has made a tremendous advancement, and many case studies published in the 36 volumes of proceedings have demonstrated its important role in the daily mining operations. However, there is still plenty of room for improvements. This paper discusses the research needs in 12 subject areas, including mine geology, rock property, zones of disturbance in overburden, computer modeling, underground stress measurements, research method, roof bolting, coal pillars, failures, subsidence, shield supports, and coal bumps.INTRODUCTIONThe International Conference on Ground Control in Mining (ICGCM) was founded in 1981. Since then, 1,546 papers have been published in the 36 conference proceedings, including the three surface subsidence workshops held in the 1981, 1986, and 1992. All types of topical areas regarding mining, from geotechnical core loggings in the exploration phase through backfilling after mining to finally spoil piles stability on the surface, have been addressed. A review of these papers, and other related literature as well, indicate that ground control has developed to become an inseparable part of mine design and a problem-solving tool for safe production.After 34 years, it is time to look back and identify the areas that need to be emphasized and to look forward to see what areas need to be researched in the future. There is no doubt that the conference series has achieved the goal for which it was originally designed: to provide an annual forum for the exchange of information among the researchers, government regulators, equipment manufacturers, consultants, service providers, and—above all—mine operators. There have been many papers addressing the application of ground control techniques for successful mine design and safe production, and, without these papers, many projects would have failed. In fact, the conference emphasis on application types of papers may have steered too far toward the application side. A review of the conference papers shows that papers have been leaning mostly toward the applied side, leaving most, if not all, fundamental issues behind in nearly every topical area. This paper addresses research needs in 12 topical areas: mine geology, rock property, zones of disturbance in overburden, computer modeling, underground stress measurements, research method, roof bolting, coal pillars, failures, subsidence, shield supports, and coal bumps."

"Geological factors and mine design contribute to mining-induced seismic activity, and this is especially true in longwall mining. Massive rock units are a key cause of seismic activity due to catastrophic failures that release large amounts of energy. Other factors, such as overburden depth, panel design, pillar design, rock strength, and proximity of the massive rock unit to the coal seam, all have a role in the potential and size of a seismic event. A recent seismic event was recorded by a deep longwall mine in Virginia at 3.7ML on the local magnitude scale and 3.4 MMS by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) in July 2016, which had no impact on the mining operations. Further investigations by NIOSH and Coronado Coal researchers have shown that this event was associated with geological features that have also been associated with other, similar seismic events in Virginia. Detailed mapping and geological exploration in the mining area has made it possible to forecast possible locations for future seismic activity. In order to use the geology as a forecaster of mining-induced seismic events and the energy potential, two primary components are needed. The first component is a long history of recorded seismic events with accurately plotted locations. The second component is a high density of geologic data within the mining area. In this case, 181 events of 1.0ML or greater were recorded by the mine’s seismic network between January, 2009, and October, 2016. Within the mining area, 897 geophysical logs were analyzed from gas wells, 224 core holes were drilled and logged, and 1,031 fiberscope holes were examined by mine geologists. From this information, it was found that overburden thickness, sandstone thickness, and sandstone quality contributed greatly to seismic locations. After analyzing the data, a pattern became apparent indicating that the majority of seismic events occurred under specific conditions. Three maps were created using MineScape geological mapping software. MineScape deploys an interpolator known as FEM (finite element method) and is based on a series of gridded triangles to forecast the probability and magnitude of an event if a particular panel were to be mined. The forecast maps have shown accuracy of within 74%–89% when compared to the recorded 181 events that were 1.0 ML or greater when considering three major geological criteria of overburden thickness of 1900 feet or greater, 20 to 40 feet of sandstone within 50 feet of the Pocahontas number 3 seam, and a longwall caving height of 15 feet or less."

"In order to monitor the overburden strata deformation over a longwall mining area in the Pittsburgh Coal Seam, three boreholes were drilled across the longwall panel. Each borehole employed multiple-point borehole extensometers (MBE) to monitor overburden strata movement during and after the longwall face passed under the study area. The longwall face in the study area was 1,428 ft wide and 4,000 ft long. The average mining height was about 7 ft. The overburden depth ranged from 550 ft to 650 ft with an average of 600 ft. The final extensometer readings indicated that overburden strata initially showed sign of movement when the longwall face was 700 ft inby the MBE. The rate of strata movement accelerated when the face was 300 ft inby MBE. When the face was directly under MBE, a sudden anchor displacement occurred, indicating rapid strata movement once under-mined gob. The readings showed insignificant strata movement after the longwall face was 400–700 ft outby MBE.INTRODUCTIONThe longwall mining method is an efficient mining method of underground mining. Surface and subsurface strata are inevitably disturbed above the longwall mined out gob. Figure 1 shows the four zones of disturbance in the overburden strata in response to longwall mining.A longwall shear cuts the coal seam and allows the immediate roof strata to cave into irregular blocky material to fill the void. This is called the caved zone. The caved zone extends from the mining horizon to six or eight times the mining height, depending on the bulk factor of each caving strata layer. The fractured zone is located above the caved zone, in which the strata breaks into regular blocks by vertical or sub-vertical fractures caused by bending forces due to the weight of the underlying strata. The surface soil and rock crack zone extends to approximately 50 ft below the surface. The surface cracking is caused by downward movement of the surface. Between the fractured zone and surface crack zone is the continuous deformation zone. The strata in this zone deforms gently without causing any major cracks that extend long enough to cut through the thickness of the strata, as in the fractured zone (Peng, 2006).The objective of this project is to provide fundamental rock mechanics research about overburden strata movement response to longwall-related activity. The findings aid in better understanding pillar stability, gas well subsidence management, hydraulic impacts, and numerical modeling."

"The angle of break is the acute angle created by the coal seam bedding plane and caving line formed by roof strata movement after extraction of a longwall panel. It has a significant influence on stress redistribution both in the gob and abutment. Throughout numerical simulation investigations up to now, little attention has been paid to it, or an angle of break of 90° was used, which, however, is not realistic. This paper presents a detailed numerical modelling incorporating the angle of break against Zhenchengdi Coal Mine. The angle of break was obtained through cross-measure boreholes. Hoek-Brown constitutive model was used to simulate the rock masses. Double-yield constitutive model, which was best fitted by Salamon’s model, was used to simulate the gob. The results show that a “/ \ shape” shear failure zone develops around the gob. The shear failure in the floor along the panel edge is due to opposite shear of rock mass on two sides of the caving line, and the number of yielded zones within the gob floor close to the gob edge is smaller. According to the research, the entry was determined to be driven under the gob edge employing split-level longwall panel layout (SLPL). The other numerical simulation for SLPL shows that stress around the god-side entry is much smaller than pre-mining stress, and the area of intact rock mass at the elevating section is larger than conventional layout. Numerical modelling was then validated by field observation.INTRODUCTIONTo solve low recovery and ground control problems in longwall mining with top coal caving (LTCC) due to large gate pillar or chain pillar, gob-side entry approach is becoming increasingly popular (Nazimko, 1994; Li et al., 2016; Zhao, Wang, and Su, 2017). Gob-side entry is actually a combination of the gateroad, pillar, and gob, which is a typical panel layout with slender pillar or artificial pillar or wall. The abutment load has a profound impact on stability of the gate pillar, as well as the gob-side entry. Better estimates of abutment loading profiles will result in improved evaluations of design of pillar and gob-side entry (Larson and Lavoie, 2016)."

The Eclipse System was developed by Minova USA Inc. formerly Fosroc Inc. to improve the performance of 5/8-inch deformed rebar fully grouted into a one inch borehole. An 1/8-inch offset bolt head combined with specially formulated Eclipse Lokset resin cartridge results in reduced gloving and increased mixing efficiency. The benefits of the Eclipse System have been demonstrated, under the supervision of MSHA, in Kentucky, West Virginia and Illinois coal mines in partnership with Excel Mining Systems, a leading roof bolt manufacturer. Over 100,000 units have been installed to date. Eclipse system bolts exposed during overcast construction at the Panther Mine of Cumberland Resources displayed an extremely well mixed, uniform resin anchorage over the entire bolt length.

For many years, researchers around the world have been investigating coal pillar stability. Many have focused on trying to optimize the size of the pillars by examining stable and failed pillars in underground coal mines. For mines that are already in operation or companies that are opening a new mine adjacent to an existing mine where the pillar dimensions and stability can easily be determined, this is the preferred technique. However, when a new mine is planned for an area where there has been relatively little mining, then samples of the coal need to be drilled and tested for strength. Because of the fractured nature of coal, this lab testing is often problematic and may often yield poor results because of the limited size and number of samples that can be obtained from the core. To remedy this problem, research was conducted in the labs at SIUC to determine if improvements could be made when optimizing the size of pillars for underground coal mining in Illinois. Through a greater understanding of the relationship between dimensions and strengths of coal samples tested in the lab, it was hoped the in situ strength of coal pillars could be determined with greater accuracy. This could allow the extraction ratio to be increased and more of the coal resources in Illinois recovered without impacting the safety of the mine workers. Many different agencies around the world have published recommended minimum numbers of samples for strength determination based on the size of the coal samples. For two inch cubes, uniaxial testing of at least seven samples is recommended and this minimum number decreases to four when testing four inch cubes. However, the laboratory testing of coal from two seams thus far has suggested this number should be almost doubled to accurately determine the coal strength. Testing also showed there is a pronounced decrease in the variation in the strength of the samples tested as the dimensions of the sample were increased. From the testing results thus far, it is recommended that a sample size versus strength curve be constructed for every coal seam for Illinois. Creating such a curve will better determine both the minimum number of samples and minimum sample dimensions for that seam or region of a particular scam. A second set of tests were conducted in the laboratory to determine the increase in strength with reduction in height for samples with the same width and length. In Illinois, typical pillar dimensions are 40 to 80 feet (12.2 to 24.4 m) wide and long, with coal thickness varying from about 4 to 9 feet (1.22 to 2.74 m). This provides width/height ratios ranging from 4.5 to 17.5. Coal samples having width/height ratios ranging from 0.5 to 13 have been tested thus far. As with most pillar design formulae, the strength of the Murphysboro coal versus width/height ratio was linear and closely matched shape factors published by other researchers. The laboratory testing thus far has identified three factors that affect the strength of laboratory samples, the number of discontinuities, the angles of critical discontinuities, and the shape of the samples. The factor that probably had the most pronounced effect on the strength of the coal samples was the angle of critical discontinuities. This testing has confirmed that there is still a gap that needs to be bridged between the strength obtained from laboratory testing and the in situ coal strength predicted.

In order to reduce the number of longwall face moves and to increase the rate of gateroad construction, super longwall panels, 1000 feet wide and 12000 to 14000 feet long, are planned for Wolf Creek Collieries No. 4 mine. The development of the longwall panels at the mine has evolved from 5-entry, to 4-entry, to 3-entry systems. A three-entry system including pillar size and entry supporting method for the super longwall panels was designed for long-term stability. The design procedures included field observation and studies, laboratory properties tests, in-situ stress measurement, and computer analysis. Three pillar design methods consisting of PILLAR, ALPS, and the Wilson Method, and one entry supporting method, ROOFBOLT, were adopted in this study. The procedures, methods, and results are discussed in detail.

Over the past two years research, development ad field tests have been conducted on a new product called the "Scott Cable Sling". This work resulted in the awarding of U.S. Patent No. 4265571 on May 5, 1981, to the inventor. Work on this' project was done by the staff of Scott Mine Technical Services, Inc., and is in keeping with its philosophy of advancing mine grad control technology. Recent acceptance by industry has resulted in volume purchases of the product and indications are that it will gain wide acceptance by the mining industry. The system features flexibility in its application and is useful in both roof and rib control. This paper describes the product, discusses its range of applications and cites specific field examples of its use.

Following a roof beam collapse on a major production district at the British Steel Corporation's Dragonby Iron Ore Mine, Scunthorpe, South Humberside, UK, rock mechanics investigations were undertaken in this room and pillar operation to assess the stability of workings throughout all the underground mine area. Over a four year period room convergence and roof sag were monitored in different mining areas and various junction configurations in order to assess and compare the relative movement of the strata resulting from mining activities, where varying rock bolt lengths and patterns have been utilised. The paper, after shortly describing geological aspects and mining methods, presents the research procedure adopted together with the instrumentation employed and discusses the results obtained during these investigations.

The German hard coal production predominantly derives from underground multiseam mining activities. Beside common surface damages, ?inner mine damages? on underground infrastructures (i.e. main roads, cross cuts and shafts) due to mining excavations occur to an increasing extent. As these "inner mine damages" dramatically increased because of the development towards high performance longwall mining technologies, this matter raised to be a severe problem concerning mining economics. To protect durable and long lasting underground infrastructures, precautionary measures such as suitable mine layouts, adapted planning of mining operations and moderate face advances have to be considered. Some examples of "inner mine damages" recorded by means of mine surveying methods are given in this paper. An empirical-mathematical model based on the principles of mining subsidence engineering methods will be introduced. This model allows to minimize ?inner mine damages? and helps to support and optimize mining processes.

The performance characteristics of Mobile Roof Supports (MRS's) were evaluated through full-scale testing in the Strategic Structures Testing Laboratory at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Pittsburgh Research Center. Safety issues pertaining to the operation and design of these supports for pillar extraction during retreat mining are examined. A unique load frame, called the mine roof simulator, provided a realistic simulation of mining conditions by inducing vertical, horizontal, and lateral loading on the support. The purpose of these experiments was to determine the capabilities and limitations of the supports and to investigate factors that influence the measurement of loading and loading rate. An evaluation of the support design and load conditions that can cause support failure or loss of support capacity are discussed relative to the laboratory tests. In general, lateral loading perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the canopy is most severe, although horizontal loading in the direction of the long axis of the canopy can also produce critical loading in some cases. The experiments indicate that both setting force and leg pressure measurements are influenced by the staging of the leg cylinders. The implications of these factors on load rate measurement are evaluated. A comparison of MRS capacity and stiffness characteristics is made to conventional timber supports.

The effectiveness of tensioned roof bolt systems has been well researched and documented over the years (Stankus, 1990, 1991, 1997; Guo, 1997; Denton, 2000; Su, 2007). Higher and more consistent installed tension has been shown to improve the beaming effect and associated roof stability especially in highly-stressed, weak, laminated roof strata. To accomplish higher and more consistent bolt-installed tensions, various types of anti-friction washers have been developed and applied to many types of tensioned roof bolt systems. In addition to increasing bolt-installed tension, these washers also provide a lubricating effect that minimizes sparking during the bolt torqueing cycle. The most popular and widely used anti-friction washer configuration consists of a plastic washer that is used in conjunction with a standard hardened steel washer. This washer configuration has performed well in the field in terms of increasing the bolt-installed tension (or plate load) and the related tension/torque ratio (the amount of tension achieved per one ft-lb of applied torque). However, the installed tension does not always maintain consistency. One reason for this inconsistency is that the plastic anti-friction washer sometimes dislodges and shreds or tears before the bolt torqueing cycle is complete. This condition prevents the plastic washer from acting as an anti-friction medium for the entire torqueing cycle. Jennmar Corporation and Keystone Mining Services, LLC, developed the ?TT? washer in early 2012. The ?TT? anti-friction washer is comprised of two zinc-coated (galvanized) hardened steel washers that are joined together with an exclusive polymer. The ?TT? washer has been extensively tested and applied in the Sewickley, Pittsburgh, and Indiana #5 coal seams. The test results indicate an average increase in installed load and tension/torque ratio of 20%. More importantly, the installed load consistency improved, with a significant reduction in the standard deviation of values. This paper will detail the development and testing of the ?TT? anti-friction washer with case studies of actual mine applications.

Highwall mining is an important coal mining method. Upwards of 60 highwall miners are presently in operation, and they may account for approximately 4% of total U.S. coal production. A review of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) accident data over the 20 year period from 1983 to 2002 identified 9 fatalities attributable to auger and highwall mining of which inadequate ground control accounted for 1/3. In the past 5 years, 1 fatality occurred in highwall mining. Estimates of the manpower requirements in highwall mining suggest that its fatality rate is essentially the same as for surface coal mining, thus highwall mining appears to be a very safe modern mining method. Highwall stability is the major ground control related safety concern, and operators are required to develop and follow an appropriate highwall mining ground control plan. The plans usually specify the following geotechnical parameters: hole width, maximum hole depth, maximum overburden depth, seam thickness, web pillar width, barrier pillar width and number of holes between barriers. Calculated web pillar stability factor exceeded 1.3 for most designs evaluated. This study examined records from 5,289 highwail miner holes with a total completed footage of about 2,560,000 feet to understand the reasons for early pull out. Average lost footage is typically about 20% of planned footage. Only 35% of the holes reached planned depth, and 20% were short due to rockfalls. Water and adverse geology accounted for 15% of the losses. Mechanical/electrical problems, guidance, and slope stability problems accounted for the remaining 30%. Web pillar stability factor for these holes also exceeded 1.3 in 95% of cases. Trapped highwall miners present a safety hazard to workers during their recovery. Best practices to avoid trapped highwall miners include: avoid mining in stream valleys, avoid mining near outside corners, careful alignment of each hole and the use of an onboard guidance system, Several issues in highwall mining ground control require further investigation including highwall mining through old auger workings, highwall mining near old underground mines, multiple-seam and multiple lift highwall mining and finally the size and frequency of barrier pillars.
