In January we published a questionnaire asking about the content of MINING ENGINEERING and about your interests. At the same time we hired an outside firm, READEX Inc., of St. Paul, MN, to send the same questionnaire to a sampling of about 1000 US members, selected on an nth name basis, so that we could have some preliminary numbers for the Annual Meeting in February. READEX sent us the final results of its survey in March. At that time, 525 responses of the 992 surveys sent out had been returned, for a 52.9% response, an extraordinarily high return for a low-key (no incentive for return) random sampling. On May 7, we cut off on tabulating returns from the magazine so that we could report the results to you in this issue. At that time, we had 594 questionnaires returned. Our 594 and READEX's 525 (we have assumed that relatively few people returned both), represent a 1119 return, about 3.5% of the approximately 32,000 who received the January issue of ME. About ME Through responses to the questionnaire, we were hoping to learn more about you, your interests, and how the magazine could better serve you. Those of you who responded, told us something positive-you look at or read the magazine. Of the 1119 respondents, 1068 or 95.4% indicated that they had read or looked through the November and/or December issues. Those of you who refer to the magazine once are 466 or 42.6%. Those of you who refer to the magazine two or three times are 559 or 51.1%. Those of you who refer to the magazine four or more times are 68 or 6.2%. How much time do you spend reading the magazine? Of those responding to this question: 186 spent up to 1/2 hr 16.6% 590 spent up to 1 hr 52.7% 292 spent 1-2 hr 26.1% 51 spent more than 2 hr 4.6% In an informal survey among our staff, we determined that most people spend 1/2 to 1 hr reading magazines to which they subscribe at home. Does that match your experience? Many of you, 764 or 69.4%, clip your magazine for further reference. Also, many of you, 513 or 64.2%, do not pass your copy on to another reader, indicating perhaps that you are clipping it or receiving the magazine at home. Those magazines that are passed on reach: 2 people - 159 - 20.0% 3-5 people - 95 - 11.9% 5 or more - 31 - 3.9% Answers to what portions of the magazine you find useful indicated that the top three were Industry News, feature articles, and Technical Papers; see Table 1. The "other" category included advertising-display, classified, and employment-Coming Events, product information, Washington Survey, new books, the reader service card, and Engineering Fundamentals. Of those responding, 797 or 75.3% indicated a preference for dual notation of SI (metric) with English units; 228 or 21.5% preferred all SI units; while 34 or 3.2% preferred SI with dual notation of other metric units. Based on the preliminary numbers reported by READEX for this question, the MINING ENGINEERING Committee in February voted to return to a policy of dual notation. This decision has been implemented. We asked for your appraisal of the technical level of the magazine. Of those responding, 78 or 7.4% indicated it is too technical, 147 or 13.8% indicated it is not technical enough, and 836 or 78.8% judged it to have the correct tech¬nical level. In response to the question about whether you like to read an occasional feature that is not technically oriented, 32 said no, but an overwhelming 97% (1024) said yes. Traditionally, the choice amongst different upgrading techniques or in finding the optimum operating conditions for a given upgrading technology depends on whether one is looking at the grade or the recovery of the valuable mineral in the concentrate. In fact, the conclusions are not usually the same. This is because the best technique or optimum operating conditions for the highest grade are not the same as the conditions to achieve the maxi-mum recovery. Therefore, a unique measure that takes into consideration both grade and recovery is urgently needed. Finding such a measure is the objective of this paper. A proposed measure provides a selectivity index in the range of 0 to 1, where 0 is no selectivity and 1 is ideal selectivity. The index can be obtained by plotting the so-called Fuerstenau upgrading curve, which relates the recoveries of the components in products of separation and a running regression applying a one-parameter equation. The measure was applied to assess the selectivity of selective flocculation under different operating conditions when used as a sensitive upgrading technique for ultrafine ground ores. After applying the proposed selectivity measure in the case of the selective flocculation of ultrafine Egyptian iron ore without the addition of cations, it was found that the optimum conditions are pH 11, 1 kg/t sodium silicate and 0.4 kg/t potato starch with a selectivity index of 0.55. With the addition of cations, the optimum conditions were found to be pH 11, 1 kg/t sodium silicate and 2 kg/t potato starch with a selectivity index of 0.65. It should be noted that determining these optimum conditions using the traditional grade or recovery measures was highly ambiguous.

Sequential excavation of the Beacon Hill Station has been accomplished in highly complex and inter-layered sand, silt, and clay soils with multiple perched groundwater tables. Successful excavation has required the installation of a deep dewatering well system used to depressurize sand layers above and within the excavated tunnel faces. In addition, the presence of sand layers in the crown of the Platform Tunnels required jet grouting at depths of up to 49m (160-ft). This paper discusses the design intent, construction, and effectiveness of the dewatering system and the selective jet grouting of sand horizons and shaft break outs for the successful construction of the deepest SEM station excavation ever completed in the United States.

The Fifth International Heavy Minerals Conference (HMC) was held Oct. 16-19, 2005, at the Marriott Sawgrass Resort in Ponte Vedra, FL. With SME as sponsor, the 2005 conference marked the first time that the HMC was held in North America. The conference is held every two years and provides an important forum for professionals in the heavy minerals and related industries to meet and discuss issues related to heavy mineral exploration, mining, processing and marketing. Previous locations included Australia and South Africa. The conference consisted of technical presentations, field trips to heavy mineral operations, a trade show and social activities. It was appropriate that Ponte Vedra was selected as the location for the conference. Ponte Vedra, located on the Atlantic Coast 17 km (10 miles) southeast of Jacksonville, FL, is the birthplace of heavy minerals mining in North America. Ponte Vedra beaches were mined from 1916 to 1929 in what was then called Mineral City. Though Ponte Vedra is now a golf and beach resort, there are still four heavy mineral mines operating within an hour’s drive. Today the Ponte Vedra Country Club and Golf Course is situated in the center of the former mining site.

B.A. Hancock It is not at all surprising that causticized potato and potato derived amylopectin starch solutions performed much better than their parent starches. Some preparation is required to rupture the starch granules to effect the polymeric adsorption and interparticle bridging necessary for selective flocculation. In laboratory work comparing the deslime performance of causticized and autoclave cooked laboratory corn starch solution preparations, it was found that higher deslime weight rejections, with attendant proportionally greater iron unit losses, occurred with the causticized starch. These results may be specific to the ore involved but they do suggest that cooking and causticizing cause different starch granule rupture and/or starch breakdown, which have an effect on desliming response. I calculated from the data in the article that the slimes product grades were high - 24.3% and 20.3% Fe when 53.7% and 54.5% Fe concentrate products were obtained, respectively, in Table 4, and 21% Fe with a 62.6% Fe concentrate in Table 5 - using the natural tailings sample, which had a head of 34.3% Fe. It may be advisable for the authors to consider different starch preparations in future investigations. The combination of upgrading and selectivity results presented in Table 4 are not as good as the authors suggest. The authors' claim that a system has been developed to produce saleable concentrates from the Kudremukh tailings is quite disconcerting. There are many hurdles yet to be crossed before commercial application of selective flocculation becomes possible because differences between the very small-scale laboratory tests conducted and commercial application are rather large. Among the many differences are varying circuit feed grades that will occur from use of tailings, the apparent face that much lower tailings grades will be encountered in practice (it is much easier to achieve a high concentrate grade with reasonable recoveries using 34.3% Fe tailings as in the study rather than 25.3% Fe tailings grades that the plant apparently averages), the hydraulic nature of the thickeners used in operations compared to the static system used in laboratory tests, the different size distributions that will be obtained from a plant closed grinding-classification circuit, and differences in water used in a plant operation and the laboratory. The authors wrote that it was necessary to overgrind to be sure that the coarse gangue would not settle with the iron oxide floccules. This situation is likely to be exaggerated in commercial operations where it is assumed cyclones would be used for classification. Because cyclone classification is greatly influenced by particle densities, there will probably be an even greater difference in size between the iron and gangue particles in the plant, which would make the gangue slightly coarser still in relation to the iron. This would make the selective flocculation-desliming separations using the procedure employed by the authors even more difficult and, using the dispersant system the authors employed, greater overgrinding would be required. To grind finer to minimize the coarse gangue in the flocculated iron oxides is quite inefficient and appears not to broach the problem. The actual problem appears to be insufficient dispersion of the ground pulp. In this situation, addition of a dispersant would likely be required to attain a sufficiently high pulp dispersion level to efficiently effect a selective flocculation-desliming separation. Although the very coarse particles would still have a tendency to settle with the floccules, it probably would be found unnecessary to overgrind as much as indicated. Use of an optimum combination of dispersant and pH modifying reagents may also significantly improve the selectivity of desliming. Additionally, although it is possible that sufficient dispersion may be obtained by pH control alone in some situations, it is quite probable that added dispersity was obtained in the reported work from using distilled water. It is research experience that distilled water enhances dispersion. In commercial operations it may not be expected that sufficient dispersion will be obtained by pH control alone, unless the water used in the process is by nature quite dispersive. Overall, a change in the Kudremukh tailings dispersant scheme appears necessary where a dispersant is used in conjunction with a pH modifying reagent. With this change, different dispersion-flocculation responses will result that would have to be further evaluated. Therefore, it is still an open question whether an efficient and effective selective flocculation separation using Kudremukh tailings may be obtained that will produce saleable concentrates.

More than 124,000 people involved in the mining and construction industries throughout the world poured into Las Vegas, NV in March for ConExpo-Con/Agg ’99. Show organizers said this triennial exhibition is the largest equipment show in the Western Hemisphere and one of the largest exhibition of any industry. “Clearly, Con-Expo-Con/Agg ’99 was one of the largest trade shows of any industry ever held in the Western Hemisphere,” said Bruno Benna, co-chair of the event. Attendees included mining industry representatives, including aggregates, and sand and gravel producers. In addition, many of the attendees work in the construction, reclamation, forestry, asphalt paving, landscaping and concrete industries. According to show records, about 52% of those attending were company presidents, vice presidents, chief financial officers or managers.

The Green Mining Industry Initiative is a risk management strategy for the future of the mining industry. Defining the Risks The bad news is peak commodities, energy and economic crisis and stock markets collapsing are the issues that are already hitting everyone?s bottom line and draining the treasuries of every mining company around the world. Higher energy costs are affecting the bottom line more than ever before, which is creating more risk for companies. Mining companies have major land positions around the world and they have major energy needs. Uncontrollable increases in energy costs, increased regulations for diesel fuel emissions and energy intermittencies are costing mining companies more time, money, and man-power, which are cutting into profits and hitting the balance sheet. The good news is, there are practical energy solutions which are off the grid, tried and true methods which can be implemented in a cost-effective manner and will increase profitability and save shareholder values as well as energy security for these companies and their projects. To date, most of the mining resource industry has not yet considered or used other forms of power like clean, sustainable, or alternative energy for their own energy needs. The reasons have primarily been pushback from the mining industry due to beliefs of older technologies in alternative energy, a lack of understanding of the cost advantages long term, and perceptions of environmental relativity.

Phosphogypsum is a byproduct of the manufacture phosphoric acid. There are approximately one billion tons of phosphogypsum stored in stacks in northern and central Florida. The Florida Institute of Phosphate Research (FIPR) is investigating potential uses of phosphogypsum. These include using phosphogypsum as a road base material, as a soil amendment in agriculture, as a daily cover in landfills, and as a construction material. The results of this research will be presented and will be discussed in light of regulatory barriers to the use of phosphogypsum.

The presence of enargite (Cu3AsS4) is problematic in gold processing because it is environmentally hazardous due to its arsenic content but also because it is double refractory causing both cyanide and oxygen consumption to increase. Selective leaching and treatment of the arsenic would prove advantageous prior to applying conventional gold leaching methods. The reactivity of enargite samples from Butte, Montana and Quiruvilca, Peru were spectroelectrochemically studied under alkaline conditions, pH range of 8-13, using Raman spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. Raman spectra of the surface were collected during and after voltammograms were potentially cycled in order to determine and compare surface species against theoretical EH-pH diagrams determined from mass-balanced thermodynamic calculations using StabCal software. Under slightly oxidizing conditions, covellite (CuS) peaks were found in a short matter of time, above ~100mV vs SHE for pH 9-13, suggesting arsenic leaching specifically occurred. At longer conditioning times, elemental sulfur was observed and tended to passivate the surface. The presence of sulfur suggests that copper was eventually leached. By operating above pH 12, under slightly reducing conditions near -300mV vs SHE, arsenic can be selectively leached as thioarsenate (AsS43-) or thiosulfate (AsO43-) without sulfur formation.

Phelps Dodge Mining’s Bagdad, AZ copper facility uses a large series of cone crushers and ball mills to reduce copper ore to very fine particles. The solids are mixed with water to create a slurry. Milk of lime is added to this slurry to raise the pH. Small amounts of reagents are also added, including a frother to make bubbles, as well as a collector chemical that causes the copper minerals to stick to those bubbles. This material is pumped to a series of froth flotation cells to concentrate the copper. Air is blown into the flotation cell tank and the pulp mixture is vigorously agitated. Rising bubbles carry the copper particles over the edge of the flotation tank. The bubbles break after they flow over the edge.

The $980m (€750m) Dublin Port Tunnel, Europe’s biggest urban highway tunnel project, was opened in December 2006. The culmination of this immense scheme is set to transform the environment, mobility and road safety of Ireland’s capital city. This paper summarizes the key aspects of a project linking both sequential and parallel construction of individual tunnels and describes various approaches to bored, mined and pre-support cut-and-cover tunneling in a wide variety of ground types and depth of cover. Examples of innovative approaches to deal with structural and geotechnical problems while maintaining full operation of both road and rail traffic and the integrity of properties in a dense urban corridor are described.

Contract 240 of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link comprises construction of twin4.7 km long running tunnels through a densely populated area of East London. The tunnels were constructed by EPBM in Sands and Sandy Clays, passing 4.4 m below the existing London Underground tunnels, and at depths of 20–30m below ground level beneath the Great Eastern railway lines into London Liverpool Street and a series of railway bridges and hundreds of buildings. This paper describes how the project team managed the challenges relating to the issue of settlement: mitigating settlement effects, prioritising the structures to be assessed, controlling resource expenditure by incentives and flexible response to urgent work relating to unforeseen events such as ground collapse and discovery of unusual structures.

One of the major problems encountered with recirculatory breathing apparatus presently used by mine rescue teams is that the inspired air becomes uncomfortably, and often dangerously, hot. This is also true with self-rescuers. It is well known that man can tolerate very high dry-bulb temperatures if the wet-bulb temperature is low, but not vice- versa. The maximum tolerable, wet-bulb temperature is about 42 °C (108 °F). A continuously inhaled wet-bulb temperature above this value can cause irreversible damage to the throat and lung tissue, and wet-bulb temperatures close to it cause extreme discomfort (1) and seriously retard the capability of the man to perform useful work. A theoretical analysis, combined with experimental results, has shown that it is the carbon dioxide absorbent that is the major cause of high wet-bulb temperatures of the inspired air in the Siebe Gorman Proto 4, and in the Draeger BG 174 apparatus, both of which are used by rescue teams on South African mines (2). In the Proto 4 apparatus, the absorbent for the carbon dioxide is soda lime (calcium hydroxide). The German Draeger BG 174 also uses this absorbent but under arduous conditions such as in hot environments (50 °C, 122 °F), the use of an alkali absorbent cartridge is recommended which consists mainly of caustic soda (sodium hydroxide). Lithium hydroxide is used in some apparatus in the United States. It is clear that different absorbents will produce different quantities of heat and moisture for a given rate of absorption of carbon dioxide. The proportion of this heat and moisture which is transferred to the user depends upon how much can be removed from the recirculating air between the absorbent and the mouthpiece. This paper discusses the present methods of heat removal and describes the design and test results of a prototype evaporative cooler.

Four companies mined ball clay in four states during 2005. They included H.C. Spinks Clay (owned by Franklin Minerals), Kentucky-Tennessee Clay (owned by Imerys), Old Hickory Clay and Unimin. Production was estimated to be 1.32 Mt (1.45 million st) valued at $53.3 million, based on the results of a preliminary survey of the ball clay industry. Production in 2004 was 1.22 Mt (1.34 million st) valued at $54.1 million. Tennessee was the leading ball clay producer state with 61 percent of domestic production, followed by Texas, Mississippi and Kentucky.

Mineral exploration activity in the US suffered through another depressed year in 1984. And continued strength in precious metals (and possibly industrial minerals) exploration failed to make up for declines in other minerals. 1984 offered little solace for the explorationist. But some new data on mineral exploration provided better statistics for analysts of US mineral exploration trends. The Society of Economic Geologists (SEG) published data from its survey of 1980,1981, and 1982 exploration by US and Canadian companies - 96 companies responded (Barber and Muessig, 1984). In addition, a Mining Engineering (April 1984 p. 345) article by Emerson and Ivosevic presented their data on annual exploration expenditures in the US for gold and for all minerals from 1961 through 1983. A review of 1984 domestic exploration and development activities reported in several industry journals indicates that almost 90% of those projects were directed at gold and silver deposits. Statistics on 1984 exploration expenditures are not available. But some industry observers believe that precious metals accounted for an even larger share of industry's exploration budget in 1984 than in 1983. The 32nd annual short course ?Grouting Fundamentals and Current Practice? was held at the Colorado School of Mines, June 13-17, 2011. The field demonstration portion of the course was conducted June 16 at Baski Inc.?s yard in Denver, CO. The full-scale field demonstration presents many types of drilling and grouting equipment in operation as well as numerous grouting methods per-formed under various field conditions. As part of the field demonstration, the class was shown the proportioning, mixing, testing and injection of various cement grout mixes into sand columns under controlled and recorded conditions. These sand column demonstrations have been conducted under controlled and measured conditions each year since 1999 as part of the short course. The sand column demonstrations were conducted prior to 1999, but with less quality control and minimal record keeping of the proportioning, mixing, testing, injection pressures and the final permeation results.

They are gone now. Gone like that long ago generation that gave them birth. The Homestake Mine, nestled in the northern Black Hills, closed in 2001 after 125 years, the longest run of any major American gold mine. The Homestake Mining Co., which guided its destiny for those many years, is gone too. It merged with Barrick Gold. The Hearst family, which guided the early destiny of both, has long since gone beyond its mining heritage and into the national and even international spotlight. The mine and the company passed from the scene with as little fanfare as heralded their birth, amid the Black Hills gold rush of the 1870s. They both grew into American mining legends, as did the town they sired and nurtured, Lead. In a real sense, the mine and the company symbolized one of the last links to a vanished world and a mining era.

With the passage of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA), and the implementation of state permanent programs, underground coal mining operations are for the first time subject to government regulations regarding subsidence. These regulations now and in the future will directly affect the manner in which mining companies mine their coal. Since the promulgation of the original final regulations by OSM, numerous changes in those regulations have been made and many additional changes are pending in the near future. This paper will discuss state and federal approaches to regulating underground coal mines and examine issues surrounding future subsidence regulations.

A glance at the following chart reveals that because of the continued poor economy, the slump in industrial mineral production continued into 1980. Gypsum was down 17% from 1979; cement down 9%, sand and gravel, 17%, and crushed stone, 11%. All these downward trends reflect the high interest rates and high costs that slowed construction starts. Domestic fluorspar was down 21% and imports off 14% due to the steel iudustry slump. However, potash production was up 8% and phosphate, 5%. Increased drilling activity spurred au increase in barite production of 25%. Most other industrial minerals posted losses with only a few insignificant increases. As expected, prices were higher, reflecting increases due to high costs for labor, supplies, and above all, energy. Increasing energy and transportation costs also had their effect on industrial mineral production. Railroad freight rates increased 16-22% including fuel surcharge; truck rates increased 11-14%a; and ocean freight rates increased 20% for finished goods. The 1979 shortage of boa and hopper cars did not continue into 1980-most likely due to low production of many of the hulk industrial mineral commodities. All in all, 1980 was not a good Year for industrial minerals.

The 112th Annual National Western Mining Conference (NWMC) hosted by the Colorado Mining Association (CMA) drew some political heavyweights, if by voice only, into the fray of two of the hottest topics that the mining industry is currently facing ? climate change and the new energy economy. A changing political landscape in Colorado, as well as in Washington D.C., has given rise to questions about the economic future of the United States and the mining industry?s role in that future. While there has been a recent push away from traditional energy sources to a ?new energy economy? that is rich in renewable energy sources such as wind and solar, the NWMC?s agenda emphasized the role that minerals will play in new energy technologies. The conference was also full of talks about the industry?s role in reducing the United States? reliance on foreign oil and other mineral commodities. To that end, an impressive lineup of speakers were invited to attend the three-day conference Feb. 8-11, in Denver, CO. Unfortunately, Mother Nature had other plans and three of the four headliners, including Denver?s mayor and Democratic candidate for governor of Colorado, John Hickenlooper, were unable to get to the conference because of a massive blizzard on the East Coast locked them in Washington, D.C. However, with modern technology, a full auditorium heard presentations from Hickenlooper, National Mining Association (NMA) president and chief executive officer Hal Quinn and Glenn Kelly, vice president, government affairs for NMA. Republican candidate for governor of Colorado, Scott McInnis, did speak to the crowd in person.
