Today the application of computer programs for planning of mine-ventilation and for safety- analysis of ventilation systems is widespread practice in German mining. The computer program for network calculat- ion, developed at the "Mine Ventilation Testing Centre of the Westfalische Berggewerkschaft- skasse" allows the distribution of airflow and pressure in mines to be calculated. In a physically well founded manner it takes into account the natural ventilation as well as changes of volume-flow in the mine, which both are dependent on pressure and temperature. Compared to an incompressible treatment of the mine air these circumstances are of increasing importance with the increase of depth, air temperatures and fan-pressures'. This especial- ly holds for the calculation of airflows during failures of fans or for assessing the influence of open mine-fires on ventilation. The application of the program is very easy and its structure is made to fit the requirements of practice. For instance it takes into account the fan characteristics of all fans. The present geology of the northwest quadrant of the Circum-Pacific is the product of the interact-ions between plates or paleo-plates which have oc-curred since the earliest part of the earth's hist-ory. Almost every possible geologic structures are observable there; stable continents, collision belts, and subduction arcs as well as extensional basins. This suggests that almost all the possible tectonic processes occurred through geologic time and the present overall structure of the Quadrant is no more than a time section of the long lasting tectonic history which the region experienced.

Discovery of the Vera-Nancy deposit in late-1995 followed 12 years of active exploration in and around the Pajingo Epithermal System, an andesite hosted veinfield covering an area of 150 square kilometres at the northern end of the Devono-Carboniferous Drummond Basin in North Queensland. Early exploration targeted open-pittable resources in the numerous auriferous veins and it was not until 1994 that exploration focus shifted to drilling to depths below about 100 metres from surface, which resulted in the Vera-Nancy discovery. That deeper drilling process is still at a very early stage of coverage of the epithermal system as a whole and substantial potential exists for additional discoveries.Drill-out of Vera-Nancy has to-date established a gold resource in excess of 1.4 million ounces. Mine development is proceeding via a twin decline system with first stoped production scheduled for August 1997.

Brazilian amethyst production is mostly obtained from underground mines in the southernmost part of the country, involving approximately 6000 miners and generating an income of US$ 20 million per year. Amethyst-bearing geodes are hosted by Cretaceous continental flood basalts of the Serra Geral Formation. The economic zone occurs in the massive (colonnade) intermediary section of the Sao Gabriel Basalto. The tunnels and stopes follow the occurrence of geodes leading to an erratic and complex layout. A ground control survey revealed excessive roof convergence. Topographic results show excessive roof deformation and some roof falls have already been reported. To understand the ground conditions, prevent roof falls and better define the pillar dimensions detailed geomechanical mapping was carried out using the scanline method. Uniaxial compressive strength tests provided complementary information for rock mass classification. Results of the geomechanical classification were used to modify the mining layout taking into account the roof and pillar geomechanical characteristics. Retreat pillar mining minimised ground instability.

The Emperor Gold mine at Vatukoula, Fiji, is a nine million ounce gold telluride deposit. In January 1992, the mine was on the verge of closure when the current management team took charge. Losses had been incurred for two consecutive years and the published resource amounted to less than five years of production. Relationships with the workforce, the government and the general public were poor. Today, the mine has recorded three consecutive years of profit, has resources that will support the operation for at least 20 years and has excellent relationships with employees, government and the general public.

The current financial climate has given rise to fears that falling mineral prices and tight credit will force mining companies to cut back on production and new project development in a bid to cut costs and conserve cash. However, a prolonged squeeze on global supply can have only one result: a massive and potentially explosive demand for metals in the not-too-distant future. A resurgent global economy will also generate dramatic new demand for oil and energy, with a return to higher oil prices likely. How then should the mining industry plan for the future? In-pit crushing and conveying (IPCC) could lead the way as a partial or complete substitute for trucks. In 13 of 15 studies undertaken by Sandvik and Snowden, comparing IPCC with truck-optimised pit designs, IPCC generated operating savings ranging from US$0.18 to US$0.82 per tonne moved, compared to trucks. Trucks have higher operating, maintenance and energy costs than conveyors. New emission standards on diesel engines may make them more emission friendly but less efficient in terms of energy usage. With far more efficient energy use and cheaper operating costs per tonne moved than trucks, conveying offers an attractive alternative for the bad times ahead and into the apparent energy depleted future. When evaluating alternatives, a reasonable first step would be to conduct a scoping level study which analyses the differences in capital and operating costs between a truck and shovel operation and an IPCC solution. The study can also determine what type of IPCC is best suited to the particular mining application. The results can then be used to decide whether a more detailed study is justifiable. IPCC is a proven process that, with a fresh mindset, can make a significant improvement to mining operations. Sandvik (as an OEM with a full suite of IPCC equipment) can undertake these studies in ten working days in conjunction with Snowden or any other independent mine planner who knows how to schedule for IPCC. Because most mining industry personnel have been æborn and bredÆ on trucks and shovels û this paper focuses on some of the practical considerations necessary to make IPCC systems work that the Sandvik Technical Services Group has encountered during these studies.

The geographical region of South East Asia is variously defined, but generally agreed to include the Asean group - Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore and Indonesia. Other regional countries, such as Vietnam, Laos, Burma, Kampuchea etc. are of course geographically part of the region, however in economic terms, they play a minor role. It is the Asean group that dominates present economic activity and provides the overwhelming opportunity for commercial development. My experience in South East Asia has been gleaned over 15 years of regular travel in the region. More recently, we have established company offices in Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia to extend and deepen contacts with major customers. This progressive development is an integral part of a planned growth pattern and will be discussed in more detail shortly. South East Asia is a rapidly developing economic growth centre, a fact which is clearly recognised and accepted by most commentators. An important question is then to be asked: Why has the region been relatively neglected by Australian, U.S. and European industrial supply companies? I will attempt to address this question in the context of industrial minerals and propose some ideas as to how effective sales programs could be developed. Firstly, let's consider the market potential provided by countries within the region. It is reasonable to suggest that industrial growth in S.E. Asia over the past 20 years has been generally steady and in some cases, explosive. Until recently, this growth has predominantly been driven by development of internal (regional) demand. Population growth and rising living standards have ensured that basic industries have enjoyed a solid uptrend in sales and production. The industries which most benefitted from regional economic development over this period were, interestingly, those which we understand to be major users of industrial minerals - glass, ceramics, paper, surface coatings, cement, refractories, rubber and plastics. Each of these industrial sectors has been influenced by different growth stimulii over a 20 year period. Nevertheless, they also enjoy a common feature which ensured an above average performance. All sectors are fundamental to an environment enjoying rising living standards and rapid growth in general prosperity. More recently, internal growth factors have been overtaken by a recognition that manufactured products from the region are competitive in export markets. This comparatively recent development provides the most interesting possibilities for higher value industrial mineral raw materials. Let me explain: For 20 years, industrial growth in South Asia has essentially been focused on satisfying domestic demand. Finished quality of manufactured items was orientated to a developing market more interested in cost than aesthetics or long life. This was reflected in raw material specifications, which often did not exist and at the best were undemanding.

Mine to mill optimisation is not a recently developed concept. It is one which is finally gaining greater acceptance in the Australian mining industry, possibly as a consequence of the downturn in markets and certainly made possible by the development of tools and techniques to measure and predict performance of mining equipment and milling plants. Fragment size after blasting has a major bearing on the performance of all aspects of mining and a major influence on the economics of the mine and mill. The process to optimise fragmentation consists of identifying the key factors, measuring their sensitivity through a modelling and trialing program and conducting economic evaluations on the changes on both the mine and mill. Management of the Ernest Henry copper-gold mine in Northern Queensland, Australia, has espoused the mine-to-mill concept and is actively pursuing excellence in blasting to drive down the total cost of mining. Ernest Henry has extremely hard, wet and heavily jointed geological conditions, and had high powder factors and a large percentage of oversize material reporting to the crusher or ROM stockpile. A blasting improvement program was undertaken between Ernest Henry Mining, Thiess Contractors and Orica Explosives to optimise the ore size distribution, particularly the oversize component, as a step to reducing production costs. Measures of success included bringing the rock breaker back from double shifts to part-time operation and increasing direct dumping into the crusher from 70 per cent to 92 per cent. Tools and technologies to predict and measure the performance of individual blasts are needed before it is possible to optimise fragmentation or the downstream processes. These include such specialised Orica Explosives tools as SABREX, POWERSIEVE, and POWERLINE and commercially available drill monitors. As important are the more common still and video camera, borehole loggers, measuring tapes, surveying equipment such as face profilers, and a high speed camera if possible. There are many tools which can be applied however it is rarely necessary or possible to use all of them due to time constraints and a point of diminishing returns. The critical point is knowing what the true parameters of the blast were compared to design -only then can the predictive tools be effectively utilised. Stage one of the program has seen gradual improvement as the understanding grew and practices have been implemented resulting in reduced bridging in the crusher, geological mapping with respective blast designs and the oversize component under control. This paper is about a process approach which links tools and technology to understand the fragmentation drivers and then to optimising the size distribution. The mining and minerals industry has had and will undoubtedly continue to have a considerable impact on the development of this State. For the first 60 years of its history the colony of Western Australia made slow progress; its population in 1889 being only 43,000. However, as a-result of discovering gold at Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie the Eastern Goldfields alone had a population of 25,000 by 1897. The income generated by the gold mining industry allowed the Premier of the day, Sir John Forrest, and his Government to support the proposal put forward by the State's Engineer in Chief, C.Y. O'Connor, to construct a pipeline to carry water from the Darling Ranges to Kalgoorlie ; a distance of 600 kilometres. The demand for people knowledgeable in the science and art of mineral exploitation also prompted the State Government to establish a School of Mines in the Goldfields in 1902, where it has remained ever since. The gold mines of this region have been a major source of employment for over 70 years and there is no doubt of the fact that their continued prosperity minimised the effect of the world recession on Western Australia in the 1930's.

An accurate and rapid assessment of coal resources, such as that provided by computer modelling, forms an intergral role in evaluating CSR's coal deposits for future development. An in-house system utilising a number of geological, engineering, costing and financial evaluation routines has been developed for DEC VAX computers. The system is currently being upgraded and enhanced to meet the demands at the various mine sites. Computer modelling of the geology is performed on encoded drillhole information and coal core chemical and physical analyses. A conceptual mine plan is formulated then digitized and superimposed on the geological model. Insitu and product coal reserves and qualities as well as overburden and parting quantities are then calculated for each strip or block. These strip parameters are then transferred to the mine scheduling routines to determine the most efficient mining sequence for the mine plan. Cost factors and scheduling data for equipment specified in the conceptual mine plan are used in the mine costing subsystem. The financial subsystem then evaluates the likely return on investment. Future enhancements to the system include improvements in the response time through the introduction of interactive graphics, the direct interfacing of geophysical and analytical data, and further development of a geotechnical'database.

Basing upon many and long practical experiences of gas drainage from coal seam and results investigations on the gas flow through in si-tu coal seam using tracer gases,it became clear that solid coal itself is hardly gas permeable or has extremely low gas permeability. Almost all of gas flows from a coal seam into boreholes through fracture net- works intersecting with them.Primary and secondary fractures in coal seams differ in their size and continuity from place to place according to differences of the coal strength and the stress conditions. A lot of gas can be drained through boreholes which intersect with many and/or wide fractures. A mathematical model for gas flow from a coal seam to a borehole through a discoidal fracture is proposed. From the numerical analyses,the apparent radius of the discoidal fracture in this model is shown to be a good indication of the gas drainage ratio. In addition to this,an atempt to make fractures around a borehole using high velocity water jet(ca.lmm dia.,300-700atm., 100-200 1/min.) is introduced.

Faster and more efficient methods of producing and refining iron and steel are imposing severe conditions on the refractory materials used to contain these metals in the molten state. In order to provide refractory linings which will give the desired service life and maintain unit availability at an economical level, it is necessary to appreciate the aggressive environment in which the refractories operate and determine the reaction mechanisms by which the refractories are destroyed. Only by such studies can the most suitable refractory or refractory combination for a particular unit be selected. Examples of refractories selection and reaction mechanisms are discussed for blast furnaces, BOS vessels, AOD vessels, steel ladles, vacuum degassing units and continuous casting.

The utilisation of fossil fuels, including coal (of which Australia is a large producer and exporter) is a significant contributor to the emission of greenhouse gases. Methane gas, formed during the coalification process, is present in coal seams to varying levels depending on the rank and depth of the deposit. This gas usually escapes to the atmosphere during mining operations without prior conversion to C02 or utilisation as fuel. The quantity of methane released can represent from less than one percent to more than five percent of the carbon content of the coal mined. Per unit of carbon, methane has a greenhouse impact many times that of C02. The emission of uncombusted methane to the atmosphere can therefore represent a greenhouse impact of similar porportions to that of the CO2 formed by combusting the mined coal. However, greenhouse emissions from coal can be minimised by collecting the coal seam methane and converting it to water vapour and the less damaging form, CO2. If such conversion is carried out while performing useful work, the methane can further reduce greenhouse emissions by displacing other fossil fuels. Technology has been developed to allow coal seam methane gas to be economically collected in a pure form, uncontaminated with air. This pure methane can be used to supplement natural gas supplies, to generate power or for the production of chemicals or substitute transport fuels. By collecting and utilising coal seam methane, the greenhouse impact from the mining and use of coal can be minimised, with significant reductions possible in the case of gassy deposits.

Compositional geostatistics is an approach developed to ensure that the constant sum constraint induced by geochemical iron ore analysis is respected in estimation and simulation. Jack-knifing and cross-validation were used within this framework to compare the results from ordinary cokriging of the additive log ratio (alr) variables with those from conventional ordinary cokriging. Two methods were used to back-transform the alr estimates: the crude additive generalised logistic back transformation and numerical integration via Gauss-Hermite quadrature. Previous work on a blasthole data set from a Yilgarn iron ore mine showed promising results, with the Gauss-Hermite quadrature method returning results comparable to ordinary cokriging from the point of view of bias, but superior in that the constant sum constraint imposed by geochemistry of the data was honoured. Other practitioners have noted that the linear interpolation of non-linear log ratio transformations will result in biased results, and that this bias can be masked in a (grade control) setting where the spatial density is high. To test this assertion, the methodology has been extended to successively lower spatial density data sets. The results and applicability to routine iron estimation are discussed.CITATION:Ward, C and Mueller, U, 2013. The wear mechanisms of impregnated diamond drill bit matrices are complex and believed to be the key point in solving drill bit self-sharpening problems. A method has been developed to find the change in c,, the wear rate of matrices having different fracture toughness K_ at the increment of drill pressure P. The worn surfaces of specimens were placed under a scanning electron microscope to examine the wear patterns and wear mechanisms at different pressures, and were compared with the worn surface of a practical drill bit. A model is proposed that within a wide range of pressures there exist two different wear mechanisms and three wear regions for cemented car- bide matrix materials. In region one (linear region), at low pressure, the major wear mechanism is plastic deformation in which the preferential wear of the binder phase of the matrix results in the loss of WC, tung- sten carbide particles. Wear rate is controlled by hardness, H as Archard's formula predicts. Wear enters region two and three (non-linear region) simultaneously as pressure is being increased. Consequently, wear transfers to fracture mechanism in which micro-fracture occurs at the root of wear grooves and the material is removed mainly in piece and mass. It has been shown fracture toughness K,, plays a more important role than hard- ness H. It is concluded that for a specific drilling condition, the pressure on the matrix should be carefully controlled and a balance between hard- ness and toughness of the material is essential for a steady drilling Condition.

The original design of the Bougainville Copper Limited (BCL) concentrator took cognisance of the constraints imposed by the topography, the need to minimise capital cost, and the need to allow for plant expansion which, it was known, would be necessary to maintain copper and gold production as head grades declined.At the same time as spare slots have been taken up with additional equipment, technological innovations have been embraced whenever there appeared to be a chance of improving the productivity ofexisting equipment, or replacing it with a more efficient alternative.There are many examples of this in the BCL concentrator in the areas of process control, process design, instrumentation, materials handling, equipment design and wear part technology.Current process developments also pursue the latest technology. The development of the Omnicone crusher, flotation control, tailings water reclamation, and the variable speed gearless drive on the No. 13 mill are prime examples.

AND INTRODUCTION The Lochiel coal deposit, a large Tertiary soft brown coal deposit in the mid north of South Australia, is currently being investigated by the Electricity Trust of South Australia (ETSA) as a potential source of fuel for a base load power station. Feasibility studies indicated that the proposed dragline method of overburden removal was viable but economically sensitive to both highwail and dump batter angles. The unusual properties of the unconsolidated overburden sediments and the groundwater regime posed a number of intimately related hydrogeological and geotechnical questions which were addressed before and during the excavation of a trial pit. All strata at Lochiel are of soil strength, and artesian aquifers occur above and below the coal. From the initial evaluation of the deposit a number of hydrogeological questions were defined. These related to the rate at which the pore pressure in the silts is reduced by dewatering, the extent of the reduction in pore pressure due to prestripping, and the feasibility of dewatering and depressurising carbonaceous silty sand sequences. The site of the trial pit was selected to answer these and other questions from the basis of a detailed geological, hydrogeological and geotechnical understanding. The trial pit dewatering system simulated a full scale mine dewatering system and included ten pumped wells, twenty drainage wells, and nearly 400 monitoring instruments. It operated from September 1986 to June 1987. The excavation was carried out between February and May 1987.

Accurate computer prediction of the muck pile produced by a conventional blast requires modeling of the physics that occurs during the rock motion phase of a blast. The ability to predict the motion and the subsequent muck pile can have a significant economic impact on the mining industry. Some of the computer programs previously used to predict rock motion employed polygonal elements with comers and sides to model the rock (Cundall, 1971; Walton, 1982; Taylor, 1983). This approach allows the elements to bulk because of the corners and the aspect ratio. However, tracking the many interactions of the comers and sides of the elements is a computationally intensive process. Several other rock motion computer programs were developed that employed spherical elements, (Schamaun, 1984; Gorham-Bergeron et al, 1987) but they lacked correct bulking mechanisms or could not be vectorized for efficient execution on vector processing machines. A new spherical element code called DMC (Distinct Motion Code) (Taylor and Preece, 1989a, 1989b) has been developed this past year. DMC was designed and written to take advantage of super-computer vector processing capabilities. The efficiency has also been increased through the use of spherical elements, explicit time integration and a new contact search algorithm. When spherical elements were chosen for efficiency, some physically correct mechanisms for capturing the bulking behavior of the rock mass also had to he developed. This paper will treat several mechanisms that were developed to allow spherical elements to exhibit correct hulking behavior.
