High-nugget effect vein-gold systems are generally considered to be one of the most challenging of deposit types to evaluate and exploit. To potential investors and mining companies, they are viewed as high risk because of the associated uncertainties in the grade estimate and general paucity of Ore Reserves at production start-up. However, despite the well-known risks, these deposits often have a grade upside that makes them potentially attractive. The reporting of resource grade is of importance and perhaps even more so is the reporting of the associated uncertainty attached to the grade estimate. The use of the grade estimate supported by a grade range is recommended to achieve more complete and useful disclosure. The definition of the grade range can be somewhat subjective, ranging from opinion based estimates through to data-based estimates and geostatistical conditional simulation. Whichever method used, the over-riding issue must be the provision of enough data of appropriate quality and full disclosure to the public of relevant uncertainties.CITATION:Dominy, S C and Edgar, W B, 2012. For a number of years, Alcoa World Alumina Australia (Alcoa) has been investigating opportunities to produce economically viable products from bauxite residues. Three of these potential products are described here, being Red Sand, ALKALOAM« and REDLIMETM.Red Sand has a nominal particle size of +100 micron and is physically little different to crushed bauxite from which it is derived. In AlcoaÆs Western Australian refineries, Red Sand constitutes up to half of the residue going to impoundment areas. Initial testing indicates that this sand could be processed to provide an acceptable general landfill material, a construction back fill or a material suitable for road base construction. ALKALOAM« is the fine-grained residue often referred to as red mud. A great deal of work has been done to show the benefits of adding this material to sandy soils, which are common in coastal regions of WA. ALKALOAM« has properties that can elevate the pH of the acidic soils and also retain phosphorous, reducing overall fertiliser use and protecting sensitive waterways. REDLIMETM is a by-product of the refining process. This material has a high acid neutralising value. REDLIMETM could be more effective at pH control than most available products because of the fine particle size and sodium carbonate that remains with the product.

Rheology is the science which deals with the deformation and flow of matter. Thus nccology is concerned with the flow of any material. The mining industry is concerned with digging things out of the ground, extracting the good stuff and throwing away the had stuff. In the upgrading processes associated with mining, is mineral processing, wet techniques are used where the primary material being handled is a particulate fluid, ie a suspension. After the processing operation, with the concentrates extracted, what is left behind generally is a wet material in suspension form, which may or may not contain reagents harmful to the environment. The amount of waste generated in any of the mining processes is large, in fact, the mining industry is the largest generator of solid waste in Australia. In order to minimise the waste generated within the industry it has become of interest to handle the particulate fluid wastes, or suspensions, at high concentrations, thus removing water and some of the reagents which may be harmful to the environment. The resultant highly concentrated suspension is a non-Newtonian hold Rheology deals with the flow of non-Newtonian fluids; therefore i combination of rheological understanding of high density suspensions. ill conjunction with an understanding of the environmental problems hero' faced by the mining industry, can and has led to improved methods of waste disposal in the industry, ie waste minimisation. This paper describes the progress that has been made in the development of dry disposal technology in the mining and minerals industry in Australia.

Five Hypotheses are given for factors influencing long-run metals price forecasts. 1 . Geologists succeed when given the money. 2. Better understanding of a metals market depresses its price. 3 . Statistical techniques get forecasts wrong. 4. Long-run metals prices are related to crustal abundance. 5 . Economic cycles affect metals prices more than is realised. These are then framed within the transition between eras as influenced by apparent long waves in economic activity. Innovation surges during the transition between eras. The transition to the 5th Wave since the Indus- trial Revolution 200 years ago is now underway. Finally, price projec- tions are given both for the 5th Wave and 200 years from now on the assumption that a similar monetary measure to today will be then extant.

A mining company has entered into contractual commitments to supply certain quantities of its product to clients in each time period. Failure to fulfil its obligations would damage its reputation as a reliable supplier. The planned production would normally be sufficient unless major problems such as highwall failures, roof falls, natural disaster, or strikes that interrupt production or delays in obtaining environmental permits, occur. To overcome these difficulties, the company may be able to obtain more of the commodity: from its strategic stockpile (if there is sufficient there); by buying it on the spot market; or for some commodities such as gold and uranium, by leasing it. Two sources of uncertainty, the spot price of the commodity and the occurrence of serious incidents that interrupt production, are considered. For simplicity it is assumed that the commodity price follows a geometric Brownian motion, that productions incidents have a binomial distribution, that they are independent from one time period to another and that they do not affect prices. A branching tree structure is used to model the joint evolution of prices and production incidents. The aim of this research project was to evaluate the companyÆs options for fulfilling its contractual commitments. When evaluating these options, multi-stage stochastic programming with recourse was used to solve this problem because in addition to providing the dollar value of the project, it gives decision-makers the æroadmapÆ to reach the optimal value. That is, how much material should be bought/sold on the spot market, how much to add to/subtract from the stockpile, how much to lease and in the worst case what the shortfall would be, for each time period as a function of the current spot price and breakdown status. A case-study over a five-year period is used to illustrate the proposed procedure. In this study the production would be sufficient to cover the companyÆs contractual commitments unless production incidents occur. Focus is on evaluating the impact of the quantity initially in the stockpile on the value of the project when the commodity market is tight, that is, when only small quantities can be bought on the spot market or by leasing.

As has been the case since the early Phoenician traders, the minerals used by modern man come from deposits scattered around the globe. The price received is more and more being set by worldwide supply and demand. Thus the price component in the profit equation:Profits = Material sold (units)x(Price/unit û Cost/unit) is largely determined by others. The recent price history for two of the major metals, copper and iron, are given in Figures 1 and 2, respectively. As can be seen there has been a steady decline in the prices (when expressed in constant dollars) over the 20 years which have lapsed since the first of the International Conferences on Mass Mining, æDesign and Operation of Caving and Sublevel Stoping MinesÆ was held. If one would look back over the entire 20th century this would also be the trend. Cost containment/reduction through efficient, safe and environmentally responsive mining practices is serious business today and will be even more important in the future with increasing mining depths and more stringent regulations. A failure to keep up is expressed very simply as: Profit This, needless to say, is unfavourable for all concerned (the employees, the company, and the country or nation). The mining companies have had to look at ways of reducing the expense part of the profit equation while maintaining safe, environmentally conscious operations. Table 1 summarises the rules for working in todayÆs economy.

The ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgical industries have been utilising slags, fluxes and mattes for process optimisation and quality improvements at high temperatures. Understanding the fundamentals of the thermodynamics and kinetics of chemical metallurgy regarding slags, fluxes and mattes has been essential to the technological developments of these optimisation and improvements. This work will discuss how these fundamentals have been studied in the reactions involved and implemented in the ferrous industry from primary refining to continuous casting. In particular, the chemical driving forces that allow these reactions to take place and the limitations of the kinetics that require optimisation to enhance the reactions. In addition, the future research direction for slag technology innovation and the role of these fundamentals will also be described.

In order to meet the increasing demand for coal for their Newcastle Steel Works, the Broken Hill Pty. Co. Ltd., on June 5, 1937, approved of a scheme to sink a tunnel to the Victoria Seam at their Burwood Colliery. This seam was virgin at this locality and lay nominally horizontal at a depth of 320ft. vertical from the surface.For the purpose of despatch of the coal produced it was decided that the tunnel be equipped with a rubber belt conveyor system.This was a comparatively new departure in Australia, and, indeed, was one of the first installations of its kind in the world, designed to raise coal from considerable depth by this means. Later the tunnel was extended to the Borehole Seam, which lay nominally horizontal at a vertical depth of 600ft. from the surface. The whole installation is the subject of this paper.In planning a project of this kind, consideration had to be given to the following:-1. Location of tunnel with regard to existing surface railway sidings and shafts.2. Ultimate tonnage required.3. Width and construction of belt.4. Speed of belt.5. Inclination of belts.6. The copper ore reserves at the Chuquicamata mine were re-estimated during March to June 1994, as part of a comprehensive audit of the mine's overall short- and long-term planning. The basic principles essential to all ore reserve estimates were implemented viz: 1. A detailed study of the geology, in this case particularly of the orientations of structural features of copper mineralisation and the subdivision of the orebody into geologically homogeneous sections, 2. the use of both drillhole and blasthole data sets, 3. statistical and geostatistical analyses of both data sets to model anisotropic spatial structures for all the geologically homogeneous sections, 4. block kriging using both data sets individually; and 5. a comprehensive validation of the block valuations to confirm the absence of global and conditional biases and to quantify the actual improvement achieved in the overall quality of the estimates compared to those executed on earlier techniques.

A method new to Australia was used for sinking a vertical shaft at Broken Hill in the development of Pasminco Southern Operations No 5 Ventilation Shaft. The 6 m diameter shaft of 820 m depth was planned with a construction method which allowed access for ground support as sinking proceeded by mechanical excavation.The vertical shaft boring machine, known as the V-Mole, was originally developed in West Germany. The machine operates in a manner similar to a full face TBM but vertically and the cuttings drop down a previously constructed raise. The raise is subject to stringent tolerance on verticality and must remain stable for the duration of reaming.

The mining industry is cyclical, but those are more than normal business cycles. In the early 2000s the industry saw the start of China as a game changer for the mining industry which lead to catch phrases like ‘stronger for longer’ and even ‘stronger forever’. Enter the global financial crises and the more recent slow-down in the Chinese economy and confidence that the future is bright has dimmed! This paper looks at the long-term forces that are likely to impact the global mining sector and explain why the industry has an excellent future. However, the industry is not without its many challenges and while demand may be in a prolonged step change, the ability to generate profits will depend on the fitness of each asset and company.The author also discusses the hated terms of ‘boom’ and ‘bust’ and considers how the industry can reduce them, but normally exacerbates them. The ability of the junior sector to raise funds being a primary example and one that remains closed to all but the very best exploration assets. A fiber optic distributed sensing system allows the monitoring of parameters useful to determine the short- and long-term behaviour of the structure in response to the external actions, including, eg seismic activities as well as long-term phenomena such as seepage, tunneling, sinkholes, and other geo-structural movements. Monitoring of large retaining structures with such a system provides direct strain/deformation and temperature measurements on the broad interior area with an arrangement of several sensing cable lines, enabling early detection, localisation and sizing of subsurface damages. Measurements are provided every meter along the entire sensing cable, this is particularly important in such cases where the location of defects and damages cannot be predicted. Fiber optic distributed sensing cables are generally available for retrofit installation inside the dam structure using trenches on the downstream face or laid during construction below the geomembrane liner within the bedding sand layer. Mapping the cable route enables exact correlation between a linear coordinate on the cable length and a position in the dam. Cable installation is envisaged to be carried out during further raising of the embankment; additional cable sections are plugged to the previously installed cables and measured with the existing measurement system, requiring only an update of the mapping. The measurement system is placed remotely from the sensing area since a section of sensing cable can be used to link to the sensing area at the storage facility several kilometers away. The system is available for on-line, 24/7 real-time operational data management. Such fiber optic distributed sensing systems allow storage facilities to be monitored with long, accurate, continuous and precise data for geotechnical diagnostic purposes. This contribution will introduce the principles, benefits, and limitations of this technology.

A distinctive feature of the goldfields of Victoria was the extrac- tion of gold from deep leads, that is the buried river beds of Vic- toria's ancient rivers and streams. It is estimated that about 265,000 kg of gold was produced from Victoria's deep lead mines which comprises about 11.5% of Victoria's total production of gold (Bowen, 1974). The significance of deep lead mining for Victoria, however, went far beyond its economic contribution to Victoria. If Profes- sor Blainey is correct it was the frustrations of mining gold from deep alluvial leads in Ballarat during 1854 which precipitated the Eureka Stockade (Blainey, 1963, 46-52). This event resulted in the implementation of a fair mining administration and was an emphatic statement of the rise of democratic movements in Australia. Much of the technology and skill for mining deep leads had to be developed locally because at that time no other major gold- field elsewhere in Australia or the world had gold deposits with comparable problems. Deep lead mining in Victoria was there- fore largely a home grown industry and the equipment for that industry was often designed and produced in Victoria.

The recovery and concentration of ultra-fine iron ore can provide significant economic benefits. Presently, there are limited options available given the low settling rates achieved by conventional gravity separation and the relatively poor performance of reverse flotation. The Reflux Classifier is a new water-based gravity separation technology that consists of a set of parallel inclined channels positioned above a vertical fluidised section. This arrangement promotes a powerful throughput advantage compared to conventional fluidisation and a highly selective hydrodynamic basis for achieving sharp separations. A high shear rate develops within the inclined channels, which generates sufficient hydrodynamic lift to convey the lower-density particles (even if they are relatively coarse) to overflow while retaining the high-density particles (even those that are ultra-fine) for discharge to the underflow. The technology has previously been used around the world on particle sizes in excess of 0.1 mm. The present work, however, is concerned with density-based separations down to much finer particle sizes approaching 0.01 mm.A major advantage of the Reflux Classifier technology is the achievement of simultaneous gravity separation and desliming via a single-stage separation. A series of continuous experiments was conducted using an iron ore feed with head grade of 35 wt per cent FeT and nominal top size of 0.106 mm, with 59 wt per cent being below 0.038 mm in size. At a low throughput of 1.5 t/(m2 h), the Reflux Classifier produced high-grade products at a high recovery. For the entire feed, grades of 66.1 wt per cent FeT with Fe recoveries of 80 per cent were achieved in a single-stage separation. Within the 0.020–0.038 mm size fraction, grades of 68.8 per cent were achieved with iron recoveries of 94.7 per cent. Excellent recoveries of up to 57.0 per cent were achieved for the -0.020 mm size fraction. The ability of the inclined channels to retain the fine dense material further enhances the effectiveness of the Reflux Classifier by creating an autogenous dense medium effect within the vertical section. A Kellogg type computer model of the slag fuming process is applied in reverse to derive some thermodynamic properties of components in lead blast furnace slag. At 1200¦C, the average activity coefficients calculated were 3.40 (S.D. 0.50) for ZnO referred to the pure solid; 0.657 (S.D. 0.022) for PbO referred to the pure liquid; for the ratios y 3.175 y (referred to the Feo.9450, Fe304 pure solids) 4.19 (S.D. 1.15), and for yCaS/ 1CaO (referred to the pure solids) 5.10 (S.D. 2.96). Statistical relationships were derived for these activity coefficients and ratios as functions of the composition of slag, which contained in molar percentages 1.9 - 12.6% ZnO, 19.8 - 24.9% Fe0.9450, 0.9 - 1.6% Fe304, 0.002 - 1.9% PbO, 16.1 - 18.6% CaO, 25.9 - 31.0% SiO2, 4.8 - 5.5% MnO, 9.2 - 10.3% A101.5, 1.2 - 1.4% CaS, and 5.1 - 9.6% "Mgo" (the balance).

In conjunction with Orica Explosives, Worsley Alumina have managed a program of continuous improvement to their cap rock blasting over the last two years. Blasting conditions are challenging because of the hard and shallow nature of the material. Blasting costs must be controlled and the environmental consideration of noise and dust is critical. Worsley have sought to determine the optimum balance between drilling and blasting costs and fragmentation. As the cap rock has few inherent weaknesses, loader productivity is strongly controlled by the degree of fragmentation from blasting. The optimum blasting solution is also constrained by maintaining airblast levels at the surrounding residences below 115 dBL . The major blast design parameters optimised during the program were stemming type, stemming length, powder factor and blasthole diameter. A series of carefully managed trial blasts were fired during 1997 and 1998 to quantify the effect of these parameters. Fragmentation was digitally measured using OricaÆs Powerseive G technique. Shovel productivity, airblast levels and blasting costs were also quantified. As a result of the project, Worsley now have an increased knowledge of the key parameters driving blast performance, and their consequent impact on downstream processes, the environment and total mining cost.

Dartbrook mine is a new greenfields thermal coal longwall mine located n the Upper Hunter Valley ten kilometres north of Muswellbrook Figure 1). Construction began in April 1993 with coal extraction starting n October 1994. Longwall production is scheduled to commence in the first quarter of 1996 with production expected to exceed 3.5 million onnes per annum. The permanent workforce will number 150 full-time ,mployees and productivity rates will be 22 000 per employee per annum m a ROM basis. Being a greenfield site Dartbrook has had the opportunity to develop and operate the mine using the best practices and latest technology available to meet high standards of safety, quality and production.

Heavy fuel oil has been injected into blast furnaces in order to reduce the coke rate, to improve productivity and to control the furnace heat condition. However, in the first oil crisis at the end of 1973, it became necessary to develop an injection technique of new fuels into blast furnaces to reduce oil consumption. In Kobe Steel, Ltd., it was thought that the injection of a coal-oil mixture (COM) into blast furnaces could be developed in a shorter time than pulverised coal injection. The development of this technique was under- taken in 1974, and COM was injected through two tuyeres of the No.3 blast furnace at the Kobe works in 1977 and 1978. In addition, in order to study the combust- ibility of COM and the phenomena in the tuyere zone, the development of a gas sampling method was under- taken in 1975. In this paper, the results of the injection tests and gas sampling tests are reported.

The enormous iron ore deposits of eastern India are part of the volcano-sedimentary basins containing iron and to some extent manganese deposits that belong to the Iron Ore Group (IOG) of Archaean Singhbhum Craton, occurring as western and eastern limbs of a broad synclinorium. The eastern iron basin contains typically huge amounts of blue dust and powdery ores. There is a remarkable difference between the western flank ores and the eastern flank ores and the present study is part of the eastern flank ores from Noamundi. Demand for sintered fines as blast furnace feed coupled with the higher export price for lumpy ores that produce enormous amounts of fines during processing has created a situation whereby both primary and secondary fines, such as classifier fines, are being increasingly used as sintered feed for blast furnace. Systematic mineralogical and geochemical characterisation indicates that in many cases the ROM and classifier fines have to be processed to increase their Fe content and at the same time reduce their Al, Si and P contents. The fines which are already at micron sizes are amenable for beneficiation using the Mozley mineral separator and sink float test. It was observed that beneficiation was better and significantly greater by the sink float method than the Mozley mineral separator. Mineralogical and chemical studies of the fines reveal that around 80 per cent of alumina bearing minerals (gibbsite, clay and silicates) are present in the liberated form. Microscopic studies confirmed that the iron minerals are well liberated by controlled grinding to -300 mesh sizes with the beneficiation of iron ore fines and low-grade ores carried out using the Mozley mineral separator and sink float test. Beneficiation using the Mozley mineral separator increased the grade of concentrate with increasing flow rate of water as well as increase in amplitude of oscillation of the tray, but not very significantly with the increase in slope of the tray. In this method, though, iron concentration improved from 47 to 63 per cent with a recovery of around 67 per cent. It is not suitable for industry scale operation as only a small quantity of ores can be handled at a time. Beneficiation using the sink float test produced a better result with the Fe content increasing from 47 - 49 per cent to 66 - 68 per cent with a recovery of approximately 58 per cent. Initial feed Al2O3, SiO2 and Fe contents of 9.85 per cent, 15.3 per cent and 49.8 per cent respectively were beneficiated to 2.13 per cent Al2O3, 1.5 per cent SiO2 and 67.5 per cent Fe in the concentrate, with a recovery of 54.1 per cent. In contrast, using the Mozley table resulted in beneficiable contents 66.3 per cent Fe, 3.01 per cent alumina and 2.05 per cent silica.
