There is considerable disparity in rates from both Rock Springs, Wyo., and Castle Gate, Utah, to the four coast cities where the slack coal is to be used for purposes other than export. The rate on coal to be exported is the same from either starting point to any of the four coast cities even though there is a difference of as much as 341 miles in the shipping distance. It is interesting to note that the freight rate between Sunnyside, Utah, and Fontana, Calif., on coking coal is $5.05 per ton and that coal up to 8 in. can be moved on this rate if it is suitable for coking. This rate was published late in 1942 on a contemplated annual movement of more than 500,000 tons. There have been decreases in freight rates since 1923 on movements of slack coal from Utah into Seattle and Portland due to pressure on the railroads and to greater. quantity of coal shipped. It is the author,', opinion that a movement of slack coal in excess of 3 million tons of coal per year from Utah to any point in central California would justify a freight rate equal to that puhlished for Fontana, Calif.. or $5.05 per ton. The movement of 3 1/2 million tons of coal per year on the basis of 240 mine working days per year would require that 14,600 tons be handled each mine working day. If it is assumed that shipments could be arranged for a 6-day week, the average railway movement would he 11,200 tons, or approximately 3 trains containing fifty-five 70-ton coal cars per day. Such movements of coal would require railroad equipment represented by the investment amounts stated in Table 12 and entail the services of 250 men. Table 12 ... It also appears that the lowest freight rate that could be expecled between intermountain points and the central California area would be $5.05 per ton, making a total cost of coal delivered at a plant site of $9.65 per ton. Conelusions The following are the author's conclusions: 1. Coal mines in Utah and in the Kemmerer and Rock Springs districts of Wyoming could increase annual production by 6 1/2 million tons per year. 2. Under present conditions coal could probably be delivered to any steam electric plant in central California at a price not to exceed $9.65 per ton. 3. The use of coal at such a price, while higher than the equivalent present price of fuel oil, is entirely feasible. 4. There are adequate railroad facilities for movements of large quantities of coal from the intermountain region to the Rest Coast. 5. In a national emergency it probably would be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to obtain sufficient oil to meet requirements of the greatly expanded West Coast steam electric generatsing capacity. 6. The intermountain region contains ample coal reserves to supply all conceivable demands for West Coast power generation for a number of generations. 7. Increasing demands of labor threaten to lessen, if not eliminate, savings in cost of coal production through the use of new mining machinery. 8. Continuation of experiments in socialism by the Federal Government through construction of hydroelectric generating plants, particularly those unrelated to land-use reclamation, defies justification. Rates under this concept of a governmental function are subsidized through greater taxation of its people. Private capital is available to construct steam plants, or hydro plants where feasible, and should be permitted to continue in order to preserve the principles of our free enterprise system. DISCUSSION (L. C. McCabe and Robert P. Koenig, presiding) C. C;. BALl*—I was asked to lead off the discussion, but it is not with the thought that I might be able to add anything to the paper. The thoroughness with which it was prepared rather forestalls the asking of many questions. Your treatment, Mr. Heiner, is a very valuable contribution. I do want to suggest—that although you have limited your study to this specific question, with certain geographic limitations, many of the things in your paper apply just as well to the eastern coals. I want to agree 100 pct with your final conclusion concerning government-subsidized construction. Id. C. McCabe*—It is certainly worthwhile to take stock occasionally to see where we are going in problems of this nature. I agree with Mr. Heiner that ultimately the only reliable source of fuel that the West Coast has is coal hut the time factor is the difficult element to evaluate. Just before I came here I discussed this subject with N. B. Hinson, Vice President and Executixe Engineer of the Southern California Edison Company, and Chairman of the West Coast Inter-Power Exchange Committee. He has given much thought to utilities' fuel supply and it was very helpful to me in preparing a discussion of the paper to talk with him beforehand. Stock taking and forecasting of future development are essential to the continuing success of any enterprise. Mr. Heiner has called attention to the unprecedented growth of central and southern California and to the increased demands for fuel and power which have accompanied it. He discusses the increased fuel oil and natural gas requirements and the probable limits on the future use of these fuels and of hydroelectric power. In contrast to the calculable limits of these sources of electric energy, the author points to the availability of enormous reserves of coal in the Rocky Mountain States adjacent to the Pacific Coast which can be utilized for power generation. That there will be increased use of coal for power generation in the area under discussion is generally accepted hut it is in the timetable of such development that there is not complete agreement. In a recent report, Mr. Hinson reviewed the future power outlook for the Pacific southwest area. He pointed out that the use of steam plants in connection with water power plants in this region has made the maximum use of hydroelectric energy possible, and that the correct balance between hydro and steam generating plants produces the most economical overall system. The Bell Canyon member of the Delaware Mountain group has yielded quite a large number of fields in which completion and production problems have been numerous and complex. Reserves are difficult to estimate due to the problem of evaluating the formation water saturation, and the feasibility of water flooding is questionable. Extensive laboratory investigations were undertaken to determine if normally measured rock and contained fluids properties could account for many of the peculiar characteristics of the formation. A statistical study or routine core-analysis data was made. Capillary-pressure data were obtained by several techniques. Fresh-water and brine permeabilities were measured and relative permeabilities of oil, water and gas were determined. Some qualitative wetta-bility tests were performed, and the petrography of a few thin sections was studied. The results of this work are presented, with typical or average data shown for each test. The permeability -to- water characteristic of the Delaware was found to be abnormally poor. Correlations of laboratory and field performance data indicate high water saturations in much of the formation. Pore geometry is highly uniform. INTRODUCTION The Delaware formation has undergone extensive exploration and development in the past few years. This has resulted in the discovery of quite a number of fields—producing oil for the most part. A large percentage of the productive wells have produced water along with the oil. Often there is no apparent pattern for the percentage of water cut experienced. In several instances vertical displacments of over 200 ft have been established between communicating wells in which the formation appears to be about the same, yet the structurally high wells yield a much higher water cut than the lower wells. Drill-stem tests have contributed little to well completion because they nearly always show small amounts of water (usually mud filtrate), regardless of what is produced later in the life of the well. Other formation evaluation methods have had no more than limited success in indicating ultimate productivity. Consequently, predicting the type of fluid productivity of Delaware wells has been very difficult. Hydraulic fracture treatments are almost universal, and unstimulated Delaware wells have not exhibited the productivity that normally would be expected of wells with the specific permeabilities encountered. Some operators have indicated that their Delaware wells need frequent re-stimulation. The uncertainty of reservoir water saturations reported for the Delaware has made difficult the task of evaluating oil in place in the reservoirs and estimating primary recovery. The unreliability of this data also will cause feasibility studies for water flooding or other secondary-recovery methods to be problematical. Several opinions have been voiced to explain why the Delaware performs as it does. Chronically poor well completions, dynamic water and tilted water tables, capillary inequi-libria, peculiar relative permeability characteristics and oil-wetness are among the suggested reasons. The dual purpose of this paper is (1) to describe the principal rock characteristics, and (2) to present an evaluation of those characteristics so that approaches can be made to explain the irrational behavior of wells completed in the Delaware. STUDY OF ROUTINE CORE-ANALYSIS DATA A statistical study of routine core-analysis data has been made to relate fundamental rock properties and characteristics of the formation to well productivity. For the most part, well production data were obtained from operators and augmented by production data from commercial information services. Only data which were available in detail and which were considered to be accurate were used. The core data used were obtained on samples from the perforated or open interval only and, thus, may not always represent the total productive interval in a well. All the core-analysis data included in this study are from the Bell Canyon member of the Delaware and were obtained by "plug-type" techniques, as opposed to whole-core or full-diameter techniques. Porosity values were obtained by the summation-of-fluids technique, permeability values are air permeabilities corrected for slippage to an equivalent liquid permeability, and the oil and water contents were determined by means of a high-temperature downdraft retort. ThE formation of the (100) [001) texture in 3-1/4 pct Si-Fe strip was first reported by Assmus ef a1.l in 1957. Since then much experimental work has been carried out with a view to establishing the mechanism involved. The papers cited above state that the (100) [001] texture was developed in strip rolled from material melted and cast in vacuum. (The impurity content of the ingot is reported as 0.005 pct.) The present note records that similar results can be obtained in material processed by powder metallurgy. A processing schedule is described.which enables the texture to be formed in strip up to 0.010 in. thick, but there seems no reason why this should not be achieved in thicker strip, provided that large grains are developed after sintering. The materials were prepared from Carbonyl Iron Powder Grade MCP (particle size 5 to 30 p) of the International Nickel Co. (Mond) Ltd. The powder contains about 0.15 pct 0, 0.01 pct C, 0.004 pct N, <0.002 pct S, $0.005 pct Mg and Si, and 0.4 pct Ni— that is, it is substantially free from metallic impurities other than nickel, which is thought to be unimportant in the present work. The silicon powder was 99.9 pct purity, or material of transistor quality (ground in pestle and mortar). The mixed powders (3-1/4 pct Si to 96-3/4 pct Fe) are heated in hydrogen at 350" and 650°C to deoxidize the iron before sintering loose at temperatures between 1350" and 1460°C (depending upon the ultimate thickness of strip required) for up to 24 hr. The object of the high-temperature sinter is to develop a large grain size at this stage. Alternatively, the loose sintering can be done at a lower temperature followed by rolling or pressing and then annealing at temperatures between 1350" and 1460°C. Both methods produce large grains, which remain large throughout the process. The compact is then hot-rolled to approximately 1/8 in. with high-temperature interstage anneals if necessary. This step is taken to avoid intercrystalline cracking which would occur if the material of such large grain size were cold-worked. The bar is then annealed at 1050°C and reduced to its final thickness by approximately 50-pct reductions and 1050°C interstage anneals. Throughout the process the dew point of the hydrogen furnace atmosphere is maintained at about -40°C. Samples were annealed in hydrogen at various temperatures and times. Secondary recrystalliza-tion to (100) [001] was developed on the thinner material (i.e., up to 0.002 in.) by annealing in hydrogen at 1050" to 1200°C with a dew point of - 40°C or in vacuum (10-5 Torr) at 1050°C. With the thicker materials (i.e., up to 0.010 in.) the best results were obtained by annealing in hydrogen at 1200°C with a dew point of - 55°C. Complete secondary recrystal-lization to (100) [001] textures was obtained. Above these temperatures secondary recrystallization to (110) [001] tended to develop. The final annealing of samples was normally carried out with the samples placed between recrystal-lized alumina plates, but some experiments were performed with the samples suspended so that their surfaces were not in contact with anything except hydrogen, and these were equally successful in developing secondary crystals. An approximate determination of the proportion of material (before secondary recrystallization took place) having crystals with the (100) or (110) planes in or near the rolling plane showed that 11 pct of the sample had (100) and 16 pct (110). The method used for the determination is described below. A sample was annealed at a temperature just below the secondary recrystallization temperature and etched to reveal the (100) planes. The approximate area covered by crystals having (100) or (110) in or very near the surface was measured on the screen of a Vickers projection microscope. This was repeated for twenty positions chosen at random and a mean of the results calculated. The main hindrance to developing the secondary crystals in the thicker materials was the difficulty of obtaining a large enough initial primary grain size before secondary recrystallization. This was overcome by increasing the particle size of the silicon powder used. During the course of the work, it had been observed that the larger the grain size after sintering the more likely it was that the material would be successful in developing secondary crystals at a later stage. An experiment was therefore carried out to determine whether the material with the larger grain was more successful in developing secondary crystals due to the large grain produced at the sintering state per se or whether it was due to the greater reduction of silica brought about when the sintering temperature was raised in order to increase the grain size. A comparison was made between two compacts, one of which was made with silicon powder of 60 to 100 mesh, the other with silicon powder which was finer than 200 mesh. F?r this experiment, use was made of a phenomenon previously observed that the larger the particle size of the silicon powder employed in making a compact, the larger is the grain size of the compact. IN THE past, we have, perhaps, been somewhat careless in our furnace practice, in the use of high-grade material, lowering the production costs through demanding high-grade ores, increasing the size of units, and eliminating heat losses by collecting and returning unused heat to our furnaces. Further economies would seem to be possible through keeping out of the furnace those materials that appear to serve no useful purpose and carry with them heat that should be used in reduction operations. In the manufacture of pig iron, about three tons of inert nitrogen pass through the furnace for each ton of iron produced. This nitrogen serves no useful purpose in the chemical actions involved, but when discharged into the atmosphere it carries away a considerable quantity of heat. Can not this loss be eliminated, at least in part, through the use of more oxygen in the blast? Many metallurgical chemists, during the past 20 years, have stated that they thought it can and have urged that the plan be tried. Others have expressed doubt, not being able to visualize how more oxygen could be used in present practice; they have regarded it as impracticable, without trying to conceive of an entirely new practice based on a new reagent. That more experimental work has not been done is due to the fact that no cheap oxygen has been available, but the committee believes that there is strong reason to expect that, should a demand exist, 99 per cent. oxygen may be made at a cost not to exceed $3 per ton. The theoretical studies of the committee have indicated such marked economy by using oxygenated air in various operations that its members strongly recommend experimental work to verify the anticipated economies. The committee has developed plans for experimentally determining the effects of oxygen-enriched air on the operation of an iron, blast furnace. A furnace with a height of 30 ft. has been built and it is recommended that the plans be put in, effect as the first step in the research.

The effects of hydrostatic pressure up to 400 ksi at 25" to 300°C on the mechanical properties of three forms of commercial beryllium (hot-pressed block, extruded rod and cross-rolled sheet) were investigated. Three effects of pressure were studied: mechanical beharior under pressure, the effect of pressure-cycling, and the effect of tensile prestraining under hydrostatic pressure on the subsequent tensile properties at atmospheric pressure. For all three materials the ductility increased with pressure whereas the flow stress did not appear to be significantly influenced by pressure. An increase in the subsequent atmospheric pressure yield strength generally occurred as a result of pressure-cycling or prestraining under pressure, whereas either no change or a decrease in ductility occurred. The only exception to this was sheet material, which exhibited some improvement in ductility following a pressure-cycle treatment of 304 ksi pressure. The effects of pressure-cycling and prestraining were relatively independent of the temperature at which they were conducted. Stabilized cracks of the (0001) type were found in hot-pressed specimens and {1120) type in extruded and sheet specimens following straining under pressure. Also, pyramidal slip with a vector out of the basal plane, presumably c + a, was identified by electron transmission microscopy for extruded rod and for sheet strained under pressure. Small loops similar to those previously reported were found after straining at pressures of the order of 300 ksi. THE use of beryllium in structures is limited because of its poor ductility under certain conditions. Therefore, one objective of the present research was to determine if the ductility of beryllium at atmospheric pressure could be improved by prior pressure-cycling or prestraining under hydrostatic pressure. Another objective was to study the mechanisms associated with the plastic flow and fracture of the polycrystalline form of this metal with pressure as an additional variable. Since the early work of Bridgman,1 it has been recognized that many materials which are brittle at atmospheric pressure exhibit appreciable ductility when strained under high hydrostatic pressure. This effect has been reported for beryllium by Stack and Bob-rowsky2 and by Carpentier et al.3 and has been attributed to the operation of pyramidal slip systems with slip vectors inclined to the basal plane while cleavage or fracture is suppressed.4 That such slip may occur simply by the application of pressure alone without external straining (pressure-cycling) is suggested by the results on polycrystalline zinc5 and polycrystalline beryllium,6 where nonbasal dislocations with a vector (1123) were reported. A significant improvement in the ductility of the bee metal chromium by pressure-cycling has been reported.7 On the other hand, limited studies on the pressure-cycling of the hcp metals zinc67819 and beryllium6 indicated no improvement in ductility; there only occurred an increase in the yield and ultimate strengths. The study on beryllium was limited to hot-pressed material. Consequently, additional studies on the effects of pressure-cycling on other forms of beryllium seemed desirable, especially since for chromium some authors10 have been unable to detect any improvement in ductility while others find a large improvement.7 That the ductility of polycrystalline beryllium at atmospheric pressure might be improved by prior straining under hydrostatic pressure was suggested by the known beneficial effects of cold work on the ductile-to-brittle transition temperature in the bee metals. It was reasoned that, by straining under hydrostatic pressure, fracture would be suppressed, and during the propagation of slip from one grain to its neighbor dislocations with a vector inclined to the basal plane"-&apos;4 would operate. Upon subsequent straining at atmospheric pressure, these dislocations with a nonbasal vector would continue to operate and thereby reduce the tendency for fracture to occur, by assisting in the propagation of slip across grain boundaries and by interacting with any cracks that may develop. It was recognized that maximum improvement in ductility would probably occur at some optimum amount of prestrain under hydrostatic pressure. If the pre-strain was too small, an insufficient number of dislocations with a nonbasal vector would be activated; if it was too large, internal stresses (work hardening) might increase the flow stress more than the fracture stress, or incipient cracks or other damage could develop. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE 1) Materials and Specimen Preparation. The materials employed in this investigation consisted of hot-pressed block (General Astrometals, CR grade), extruded rod (General Astrometals, GB-2 grade with a reduction ratio of 8:1), and cross-rolled sheet (Brush S200, 0.065 in. thick). The analyses of these materials and mechanical properties at room temperature and atmospheric pressure are given in Table I. The grain size of the hot-pressed block was 15 to 16 µ, that of the extruded rod 10 to 11 µ, and that of the sheet 7 to 10 µ in the rolling plane and 5 to 6 µ in the thickness, all determined by the linear intercept method. IN order to clarify and amplify the existing data concerning the action of the cementing material in cemented tungsten carbide alloys, the authors have initiated this investigation of the entire range of cobalt-tungsten carbide alloys. Inasmuch as the ultimate objective is relative to what actually goes on during the sintering of cemented tungsten carbide materials, this work was necessarily restricted to heat treatments similar to those used in actual production of these materials. In the course of numerous experiments, the authors have noted several conditions that indicated that there was a solubility to be considered. Among these factors are the following: 1. Many of the alloys showed a much larger amount of binding constituent to be present than could possibly be accounted for by the cobalt content. 2. In many areas, grains of the carbide constituent are much larger than the particles of carbide originally added. In addition, these grains are of very regular contour. 2a. In samples of cemented tungsten carbide which had been fused in the atomic hydrogen torch in the presence of excess hinder constituent, immense grains are formed, and their shapes are very regular. This is also true when the cemented tungsten carbide of 13 per cent. Co content is fused alone in the atomic hydrogen torch. Contrary to general expectation, chemical analysis of this material, after fusion in the atomic hydrogen torch, checks the analysis of unfused material. 3. In making the cemented tungsten carbide materials by the process of exerting the pressure at the time of heating a certain portion of the contents squeezed out of the mold. Chemical analysis has shown that this material contains approximately 12 to 20 per cent. of tungsten. The microstructure shows a cored dendritic structure interlaced with eutectic network, and some graphite, as shown in Fig. 1. 4. Thermal analysis of these materials has consistently indicated an arrest point close to 1350° C.

The factors involved in selecting, a drive system for a grinding mill, including gearing arrangement, motor selection, and electric-supply system limitations are reviewed. Equipment costs are evaluated on a dollar per horsepower basis and starting performance is analyzed, the latter making use of a recently developed computer program. The present interest in large-diameter grinding mills and the rapidly rising cost of the drive in proportion to the cost of the mill establishes a need to explore the drive system in detail. The drive for a 7 to 8,000 hp mill will cost from $350 to $600,000 which represents nearly half the total cost of the mill package, and requires as much building space as the mill proper. Some of the drive components require a longer time to manufacture and the installation time and costs are equal to those for the mill. It is apparent that the drive has become a dominant factor in the overall mill design consideration. A new plant requires a tremendous investment in both time and money. With the high degree of competition in the mining industry, low capital cost is an exceedingly important factor in the development of a project. It is just as important, however, to insure that the equipment is going to perform satisfactorily for the anticipated life of the project without adding unplanned operating, maintenance, and replacement costs. This is the position in which the engineer or designer usually finds himself and is really one of his primary functionsestablishing a realistic compromise between cost and performance. Large primary grinding mills can represent a major portion of the cost of a plant and the drive system accounts for a substantial part of this cost. These facts justify a careful analysis of the drive requirements and all of the factors involved in ultimately arriving at the best system for the lowest cost. A number of excellent papers have been published on various aspects of mill drives. The authors have used information from these papers in making a study of a drive for a 7600-hp, 32 x 12-ft autogenous mill. This was a broad investigation, including mechanical and electrical design, layout, performance, and maintenance considerations, and overall economics leading to the selection of the optimum system for that mill. This paper was developed from the study and includes information applicable to large mills in general. For a successful and economical application, the drive must be considered as a system and all of the components analyzed to determine their effect on the system. This requires the participation of the mill designer, gear, and other mechanical component manufacturers, motor manufacturer, plant designer, and operator. A careful analysis of the mill torque requirements is first necessary to provide a basis for selection of the mechanical and electrical drive components. Because of manufacturing limitations on the size and capacity of gearing available for these low-speed applications, an evaluation of costs for various gear ratios and configurations in conjunction with motor speeds is required. Consultation with the power-supply company is necessary to determine limitations on motor-starting disturbances and to analyze operating costs on the basis of existing rate structures and low characteristics. Finally, consideration must be given to the drive arrangement and its affect on plant layout, space requirements, and location of auxiliary equipment for the selected process. There are presently three basic schemes for driving a mill. The first is a direct drive by a motor operating at mill speed with no gearing. The second is by a higher-speed motor through a trunnion-connected gear drive. The third is by a motor through the more conventional pinion and ring-gear with the option of an interposing gear box to permit greater motor speed than pinion shaft speed. [(Fig. 1.)] Several manufacturers have or are presently developing motors which drive the mill directly without the use of gears. One arrangement has the motor armature intimately surrounding the mill shell-discharge spout or extension of the trunnion journal. The motor stator is then supported independently and surrounds the shell or trunnion-mounted rotor. Another variation utilizes an independent mill-speed motor connected to the trunnion by a drive shaft and flexible couplings.

A simplified method of assessing the characteristics of a cleaning unit, including washability curves, yield figures, ash error, separating gravities, and error curve. FOR more than 25 years evaluations of coal cleaning units have appeared in many publications, and during this time considerable progress has been made in developing the theory and techniques of calculating washery results. A variety of characteristics have been defined over the years, many receiving general recognition during the first post-war Coal Preparation Conference in Paris in 1950. Coal preparation has become a science, and the approach to preparation problems is being revolutionized. Formerly, for example, if a coal operator wanted to know the performance of a given cleaning unit for a particular grade of his run-of-mine, he either shipped a carload to the manufacturer for a test run or relied on a report of a test carried out on a coal similar to the one he intended to clean. In modern practice the expensive, time-consuming test work generally can be avoided if the washability curves of the coal in question and the error curve of the cleaner are known. Normally a guarantee can be given on the strength of this information. General acceptance of modern standards has thus reduced the need for pilot-scale models of existing types of coal cleaners. Needless to say, the method requires exhaustive and accurate information on the cleaning unit and on all the additional circumstances affecting its results, information that ultimately can be secured only from actual tests made in the laboratory or in the washery. It is not the purpose of the present discussion to compare the merits of various characteristics, but to describe the general method of calculation, including a method of obtaining data with a minimum of laboratory work. All data presented here were derived from tests made at the plant with portable field equipment, using small quantities of varsol, carbon tetrachloride, and bromoform. It will be explained later that the use of standard fractional ash contents designated normalized ash contents aids considerably in reducing the routine testing of coal cleaners. Like any other statistical procedure, this method has limitations, and it is not recommended for any work in connection with guarantees. Even a varying commodity such as coal, however, will follow the law of large numbers, which is the basic law of statistics, thus allowing simplification of test work without appreciable loss of accuracy. In the "cobalt issue" of our favorite magazine, January 1951, you stated: "By far the best immediate United States prospect for, large amounts of cobalt is the Blackbird mine of the Calera Mining Co., which is operating for Howe Sound Co., in Leinhi County, Idaho." In the March 1 issue of Saturday Evening Post, Ernest F. Mechlin, Jr., chief cobalt section, National Production Authority, states: "The Bethlehem Steel Co.&apos;s Cornwall, Pa. ore bed is the principal domestic source." Maybe he should have said: "was the principal domestic source", or perhaps Howe Sound&apos;s Idaho cobalt is still in the prospect stage in Mr. Mechlin&apos;s opinion, perhaps in yours too. There is a road into the microscopic realm that has remained untraveled through all these years of intense activity with high-power optical and electron microscopy. The road is worthy of careful scouting by metallurgists and other investigators, for it leads into relatively new country and it makes some areas accessible that heretofore could be reached only by very indirect paths or by the use of imagination. And when the road passes through familiar territory it frequently permits a new view of commonplace things that should prove of value from time to time. An accepted way to interest people in new sights such as this is to present an illustrated travelogue. This I propose to do, using many pictures taken in my recent exploration of this road. In the manner of travelogues, I shall touch briefly upon a large number of different subjects in physical metallurgy and shall attempt to give an exhaustive treatment of none, for the objective is to provide a means for further research, to interest others in it, and to indicate what appears at the moment to be profitable directions for it to take. The method I shall present involves X-rays, but does not make use of the usual accompaniments of X-ray research such as reciprocal lattices, Fourier series, or the stereographic projection. The method is so simple in its fundamentals that it could have been developed 2o years ago, or perhaps even 30 years ago. It is well to have a destination for our travels, so that when we are through we shall have explored some region of importance, despite our preoccupation with the novel means of transportation and our interest in the sights to be seen along the way. So let us name the Cold-worked State as our destination, and make side trips into the territories known as Recovery, Recrystallization, and Precipitation-hardening. A great many investigations have been made of the nature of cold-worked metal, and a great variety of methods used, many of which are indirect, such as X-ray line intensities, X-ray line widths, calori-metric measurements, and magnetic measurements. Since comprehensive reviews of these investigations have been published in recent years, they need not be discussed here. The investigations that were the direct forerunners of the present work should be first mentioned. In 1931 I became interested in the structure of individual spots in X-ray diffraction patterns.l When a crystal is placed in the narrow pencil of X-rays in a Laue camera, the spots recorded on the film are not always uniformly black, but may have an internal structure. The meaning of this may be understood from Fig. I, which represents a narrow beam containing X-rays of many wave lengths (&apos;&apos;general radiation") penetrating a crystal in the direction of the arrow and forming a pattern on the vertical film at the right.

The nmgnetic susceptibility of heat-treatable aluminuin alloys is sensitive to chanyes such as solution or dissolution of solute and the precipitation of mew phases. By measuring the change in the magnetic susceptibility of aluminum alloys caused by various heat treatments, an empirical relation was found from which atomic arrangements in dilute binary alloys of copper, zinc, and magnesiutn in aluminum have been delineated. The relation predicts the ultimate formation of C1LA12 when copper is precipitated from solid solution in aluminum. Euidexce joy silovt- range order is found for copper in solid solution in aluminum in the sense that copper atoms avoid being nearest neighbors to an extent greater than would result from a purely random arrangertzeizt. Hume-Rothery has predicted such short-range order joy solid solution of copper in aluminum The Al-Zn system agrees with evidence obtained from X-ray scattering at small angles and predicts a tendency for zinc atoms to cluster in solid solution in aluminum. In the Al-mg system, the empirical relation indicates an approach to randor distribution of magnesium in solid solution in aluminum with a tendency for magnesium segvegation which increases with incveasing temperature. ThE magnetic properties of metals are complicated by the fact that contributions are made to them both by electrons of a "metallic" type which belong to the crystal as a whole, and by electrons in states localized on particular atoms. An expression1&apos;2 for the bulk magnetic susceptibility of aluminum may be written as the sum of three contributions: where XA1 is the bulk susceptibility of aluminum per gram of material (in the cgs system, the units are those of reciprocal density); Xa1+3 is the diamagnetic contribution of the electrons localized in ion cores; Xa1 is. the paramagnetic spin contribution of conduction electrons often called Pauli paramag-netism: Xa1 is the diamagnetic contribution of the conduction electrons often called Landau diamag-netism. Ion core diamagnetism arises from the precession of the electron orbits which occurs when a magnetic field is applied to a system of electrons moving about a nucleus. Its contribution to the magnetic suscepti- bility is small, temperature-independent, and unaffected by alloying. The conduction electron diamagnetism is also temperature-independent and arises from the translatory motion of the electrons. For perfectly free electrons this contribution should be exactly one-third of the Pauli spin paramagnetism, but this relation is seldom even approximately true. Blythe2 determined the conduction electron diamagnetism in pure aluminum and found it to be extremely small. Any change in the conduction electron diamagnetism caused by alloying is neglected in this work. The Pauli paramagnetic contribution3 to the magnetic susceptibility of aluminum depends upon the number of electrons that occupy excited states and whose spins can be turned parallel to an applied magnetic field. The number of electrons free to turn in the field is proportional to the temperature and each spin contribution to the susceptibility is inversely proportional to the temperature. A slight temperature dependence of Pauli paramagnetism occurs when the number of electrons occupying excited states cannot increase sufficiently to balance the inverse dependence on temperature of each spin contribution. The decrease of the magnetic susceptibility of aluminum with increasing temperature is attributed to a temperature dependence of the Pauli paramagnetism. Estimates of the Pauli paramagnetism of aluminum have been made by several workers.2,4,5 All of the values are in reasonably good agreement with each other. In this work Xal at 17°C is taken as 0.761 X 10-8 cu cm per g. An expression similar to [I] can be written for the magnetic susceptibility of an aluminum base alloy containing a fractional weight percent x of solute:&apos; Xa = (1 -x)XAl+3 +xXsoluteion * XaPauli +Xadia) [2] where X, is the magnetic susceptibility per gram of alloy, Xal&apos;3and Xsolute ion are the ion core diamag-netic contributions, and xpauli and xdia are the Pauli and diamagnetic contributions of conduction electrons in the alloy. If the components of a mixture are not alloyed but simply mixed together in their pure states without producing a new phase, then the magnetic susceptibility of the mixture is given by the Wiedemann additivity law: Xm =x1X1 +x2x2 + ..xnxp [3] where X, is the susceptibility per gram of mixture and xnXp are the weight fractions and susceptibilities, respectively,-. for the pure components. The additivity law is not applicable to alloys because the outer electronic structures of the components are changed by alloying.&apos; Both the Pauli paramagnetism and Landau diamagnetism are affected; hence the magnetic susceptibilitv of an alloy is usually different from that calculated using the additivity law. In this work the difference, X, -X,, is taken as a measure of the change caused by alloying.

During the past year personnel of the Roof Control Research Group of the Bureau of Mines designed and developed encapsulated hydraulic cells for measuring pressure changes in coal in situ. Preliminary results from feasibility tests in progress in the laboratory and field indicate that the cells respond favorably to changes in pressures associated with a coal-mining environment. The ultimate objective is to use these cells to obtain engineering information relating to coal bump or coal outburst phenomena. Mining research has experienced a remarkable growth during the past decade and from all indications should surge forward at even a greater pace in the future. This increased interest in mining research has been brought about by the ever-multiplying number of technical problems being encountered by the mining industry in its effort to produce pay-dirt tonnages safely and economically from greater underground and surface pit depths. Among the various divisions in the field of mining research, the study of ground stress has received a large part of the overall attention. Numerous technical papers have been written with regard to ground stress conditions around mine openings and yet the total usable knowledge concerning this subject is extremely limited. Research teams around the world are endeavoring to bridge the gap between theoretical and laboratory approaches and the solution to design problems in the field. The problem of ground stress is not a new one for the coal mining industry. Operators in both eastern and western coal fields of the United States as well as in many foreign countries have long been plagued with a number of ground stress problems, one of which is commonly referred to as the coal-mine bump. This term or phenomenon has been aptly defined by earlier investigators as the violent and sudden failure of coal and adjacent rock. Direct results of such failures have been the loss of human lives and thou- sands upon thousands of dollars of sustained mine damages. In an effort to alleviate the magnitude and frequency of these failures, mine operators have employed and are presently employing various corrective techniques. These include: Inducing failure in heavily stressed areas by augering large-diameter holes into stressed pillars, using extensively yield-able steel arches in both long-term haulage and short-term face entries, backfilling unused or abandoned entries with mine waste to gain additional support, and using systematic pillar coal panel extraction techniques including mechanized longwall mining. The Health and Safety Activity of the Bureau of Mines has for a number of years contributed considerable time, funds, and talent in an effort to define better the ground stress problems associated with coal-mine bumps. As a part of this investigative program, in situ ground pressures are presently being studied in coal mines located in West Virginia and Utah. The description and development of the device being used to measure these pressures is the specific topic of this paper. CHOICE OF INSTRUMENTATION After consideration and evaluation of the various instruments and techniques that are being used by researchers in the field of rock mechanics to detetmine in situ stresses, a simple hydraulic system was selected for detailed investigation. Aside from simplicity, a hydraulic system is relatively inexpensive and also eliminates the need for electricity in its installation and operation. The hydraulic device referred to is, in essence, a simple unidirectional pressure-measuring cell. Hydraulic cells, which had been used for measurement of pressures in hard rock, were investigated but found not entirely suitable for use in coal, particularly since they involved (1) preparation and emplacement of cement grout at the test site, and (2) a waiting period before the cells became operational. At the outset, it was decided that certain design parameters be established. The cell should be simple and inexpensive, constructed of materials readily obtainable and easily built in the laboratory or field by unskilled labor. A study was made of the effect of ingot structure on the strength and ductility of high-strength wrought-aluminum alloys. It was found that a fine-cast structure facilitated complete homogenization which, in turn, resulted in significant increases in ductility and strength. A completely homogenized 7075-T6 alloy developed tensile properties of 85,000 psi UTS, 75,000 psi YS, with 40 pct RA. Completely homogenized 7001-T6 alloy tensile properties were 102,000 psi UTS, 99,000 psi YS, with 19 pct Ra. A method was devised for making small ingots having secondary dendrite arm spacing of less than 10 u. This method involved multiple-pass arc melting of commercial rolled plate with a tungsten electvode. This material could be completely homogenized after 3 hr at 900°F; homogenization of the original plate material was not complete after 120 hv at 900°F. Degree of homogeneity was determined by use of metallographic and electron-microprobe analyses. The electron-micro-probe study also showed the preferential segregation of solutes in the microstructure. HIGH-strength aluminum alloys, such as those of the 7000 series, usually freeze by the formation and growth of dendrites. The dendrite arm spacing (DAS) depends on the rate of solidification.&apos; Commercial ingots are usually direct chill-cast to promote more rapid solidification, but, due to the large mass of the ingot, localized solidification times are long and a large DAS results. During solidification, solute elements are rejected by the solid as it forms, causing enrichment of the liquid and ultimately solute-rich interdendritic regions. In order to attain a homogeneous ingot, the segregated solutes must diffuse across the dendrite arms. The larger the DM, the longer the time for complete homogenization. In the case of commercial ingots, the DAS is so large that the time for complete homogenization is prohibitively long and, therefore, second phases or compounds are always present. These un-dissolved phases are carried over to the wrought material during processing, resulting in an impairment of strength and ductility. In addition, the mechanical fibering of the undissolved second phases or compounds during working results in mechanical property anisotropy. If complete homogenization could be attained, higher ductility could be expected. The realization of higher ductility at current strength levels is a desirable objective; however, if higher-strength alloys were wanted, it might be possible to sacrifice some of this ductility by adding more solute elements and produce even higher-strength alloys than are currently available. Further, if complete homogenization leads to more efficient utilization of solute elements, then more dilute alloys should have relatively high strengths with very high ductility. In all instances, it would be expected that the degree of mechanical property anisotropy due to mechanical fibering would be reduced. Therefore, it was the purpose of this investigation to produce cast structures that would facilitate homogenization and to determine the effect of homogenization on the properties of high-strength, wrought-aluminum alloys. MATERIAL CLASSIFICATION Commercial Alloys. In order to illustrate the non-homogeneous condition that exists in commercial high-strength, wrought-aluminum alloys, typical micro-structures of 7001, 7075, and 7178 are shown in Fig. 1. The chemical compositional specifications of these alloys are given in Table I. It can be seen in Fig. 1 that a considerable amount of undissolved second-phase material is present in each of these alloys. The solute elements associated with the undissolved phases were identified by electron microanalyses. Back-scattered electron images and characteristic X-ray images of the three commercial alloys are shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4. These data indicate that the second phases are regions of high copper and high iron-copper concentrations. The second-phase material also was analyzed for magnesium, zinc, manganese, chromium, and silicon, but no significant enrichment above that of the matrix was found. Therefore, the problem of homogenization resolved itself into one of dissolving the copper-rich and the iron-copper-rich second phases. In order to accomplish this objective, two approaches were made. The first was to reduce the iron as low as possible since this element has a maximum solid solubility of 0.03 pct in aluminum. The second was to produce cast structures with finer DAS to facilitate dissolving the second phases. Commercially Produced High-Purity Alloys. A special high-purity, 2000-lb ingot of 7075 alloy was made by a commercial producer. This alloy contained the following weight percentages of solutes: 5.63 Zn, 2.48 Mg, 1.49 Cu, and 0.21 Cr. All other elements combined were less than 0.02 pct by wt including iron and silicon at less than 0.01 pct each. The ingot was cast and processed into rolled plate using standard commercial techniques. Microstructures of standard commercial 7075 and the special high-purity 7075 are shown in Fig. 5. It can be seen from this figure that the high-purity alloy has less undissolved second-phase material, but a significant amount was still present. The second phase in the high-purity material did not contain iron but it was found to be enriched with copper. The slight effects of the increased purity and de-

In no case would a well deeper than 15,000 ft. be required, and in most cases to no greater depth than 10,000 ft. Recent outstanding success of deeper prospecting in West Texas demonstrates the merits of deeper drilling on known structure. Introduction New fields discoverd during I942 equaled or exceeded the number in any preceding year. The total amount of oil found by these discoveries was less than in any previous year, for which accurate records are available. This means that the pools now being discovered are much smaller than in past years. This is to be expected, since the prospects available during 1942 were largely those overlooked in the earlier years and therefore represent a second or third order (in quality) of structural feature. This failure to find pools of good size and quality raises grave doubt as to the security of our future oil supply. With military needs rising almost daily, and the period of heaviest con- sumption in our war effort still in the future, there is even a growing doubt as to our ability to supply the amount needed for our ultimate victory. This does not mean that our reserves are inadequate, but rather that our "capacity to produce" may be inadequate. Lacking large fields with flush production, our capacity to produce is rapidly approaching our current needs. ,Since the industry is unable to find the large new fields necessary to keep a safe margin of "capacity to produce," other means are needed. It seems obvious that one of these should be deeper prospecting on the large, proven, productive structural features now known. The exploratory wildcat is drilled primarily in search of a trap and the reason for failure to find oil and gas in nine out of ten cases is due to the absence of a suitable trap under the drill site. Therefore, deeper drilling on a known structural feature that is productive largely eliminates the greatest hazard in wildcat drilling. While by no means all the oil known today is found in structural traps—in fact, some have estimated that less than half is so located— the fact remains that structural traps are far more commonly the oil fields that have multiple horizons of production superimposed one over the other. Outstanding examples are the Eldorado field in Kansas, the Tonkawa and Cushing fields in Oklahoma, the Louden and Salem pools of Illinois, and the richest and most prolific of all structural traps, the Long Beach, Ven-tura and other similar fields of California.

The purpose of this paper is to present a method of designing safe and economical arch structures that are to be constructed of concrete or directly of original earth materials. The experimental data used to illustrate the design method are taken from Bucky and Fen tress,1,2 and the application of the ideas presented by them is extended by obtaining an additional set of curves from which arch structures may be designed. This design method is based upon the following principles of similitude: A scalar model made of the same material as that of the full sized structure will behave similarly to its prototype if the density of the model is increased in the same proportion as its linear scale is decreased. Let R represent the scale or model ratio, namely, the ratio of a prototype linear dimension to the corresponding model linear dimension. The effect of increased density may be obtained by rotating the model in a centrifuge at a speed such that the centrifugal held exerts on the model an accelerative force R times the accelerative force of gravity. Under these conditions; (I) model unit stresses are equal to corresponding prototype unit stresses, (2) the ratio of the prototype deformation at a given point to the model deformation at a similar point is equal to the scale ratio, R, and (3) the model and the prototype will behave similarly within and beyond the elastic limits of strain. According to the above relations, such models can be used to solve the following problems: I. The dimensions of the most economical safe arch structure for a given load. 2. The miaximum safe roof span underground for given geologic conditions. The procedure is described briefly as follows. Tests are made by rotating in a centrifuge a number of models that repiesent a variety of prototype loads and dimensions. From the experimental data, curves are plotted to show the relations between these loads and dimensions. The curves are used to solve directly the problems stated above. Structural design is based upon the working (safe) stress of the material of construction, which is established by applying a factor of safety to the experimentally determined ultimate strength of the material. In conformity with this principle, each model is gradually loaded until failure occurs. A safety factor is then applied to the results. If a safety factor of 4 is used, a given model at failure represents a safe prototype, the linear dimensions of which are equal to one-fourth the model ratio at failure times the corresponding model dimensions. The safe model ratio is computed from the following formula: Safe R =(1/4)4p2n2r/g=p2n2r/g [I] in which: n = centrifuge revolutions per second at model failure; r = radius of rotation of the model in feet; g = 32.2 ft/sec2.

THE effect of a tensile stress in accelerating the corrosion-cracking of certain alloys of aluminum, magnesium and iron is widely recognized. The literature is extensive and it is only necessary to cite the recent ASTM-AIME Symposium.1 There are, however, no experimental data conclusively showing the effect of an applied compressive stress. It has been inferred, from the generally accepted mechanism postulated for the acceleration of corrosion by an applied tensile stress, that a compressive stress would inhibit corrosion. Furthermore, it is observed that corrosion cracks invariably start on the tension side of a specimen bent as a simple beam. This observation has led to the suggestion that shot-peening of the surface would inhibit or eliminate stress-corrosion cracking in magnesium alloys, and aluminum alloys.3 However, the degree of inhibition produced by shot-peening does not appear in the literature except for the above qualitative references which are unsupported by experimental data. Moreover, while peening undoubtedly imposes a surface compressive stress, the alteration of the surface by the severe cold-working involved complicates the interpretation of the results with respect to the effect of a compressive stress alone. If corrosion proceeds along preferential paths produced by precipitation from solid solution, it is easily understood how a component of tensile stress normal to these paths will accelerate the corrosion and lead to ultimate failure. On the other hand, if the metallurgical conditions are such as to create preferential corrosion paths, then it is difficult to understand how a compressive stress, produced by shot-peening or any other method, can inhibit corrosion except in the sense that the accelerating factor is removed. Thus, if the basic corrosion mechanism remains unaltered, there should be little or no inhibition resulting from the application of a compressive stress if in¬hibition is defined as the reduction of the degree of corrosion below that experienced in the unstressed state. The experiment described below was performed to isolate and evaluate the effect of a compressive stress on the corrosion and stress-corrosion cracking of a high strength aluminum alloy (24-S); and, by a comparison of the corrosion rate of specimens subjected to an applied tensile stress, compressive stress and in the unstressed state, to clarify the role of stress in intergranular corrosion. INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARY With respect to the geomechanics aspects, the primary technical objectives in mining by an undercut-cave method are to achieve a controlled, sustained caving of the mineral body and to remove the fragmented ore with a minimum of dilution from surrounding unmineralized rock, while maintaining stability or control of the rock structure around the access openings. The structurally ideal ore body probably does not exist. If the rock mass is so weak as to cave on a short span, it may tend to be too sticky for easy drawing and handling, or create special problems in regard to support of the access openings. If the ore is strong, caving may be difficult and the caved fragments may be of such a large size as to require special equipment for transferring the ore from the caved zone. Given enough time and money to generate data and conduct trials, engineering and ingenuity can devise an appropriate combination of mine layout, sequence of extraction, and mechanical equipment to achieve a technically successful caving extraction operation to meet the foregoing requirements in many types of deposits. The large capital investment involved, however, reduces the freedom to make major changes once the mine development is well under- way, and the penalties for failure to accurately anticipate operating conditions militate against selecting any but the most obvious candidates for mining by an undercut-cave method. The demonstrated capability to extract large, deep, economically marginal deposits by this low-cost, high-volume method of mining provides an incentive to develop a rationale for predicting the cavability and stability characteristics of a deposit prior to mining, so that the undercut-cave method may be extended to a much wider range of mineral deposit characteristics. The ultimate goal is to establish as explicitly as possible the quantitative interrelationships between the measured rock-mass characteristics, the caving span, the size distribution of caved ore fragments, and the sizes and locations of stable access openings. Lacking an understanding of these relation- ships, a designer may readily change some factor in the wrong direction (e.g., excessively reduce the distance between the extraction level and the undercut to increase the convenience of operations for the undercutting crew, increasing the frequency of repairs to the extraction-level support system) or create unnecessary problems elsewhere in the system by introducing a design change that can achieve only minimal improvement in the factor of direct interest (e.g., unnecessarily complicate the ore-transfer system by changing the orientations of the openings, with- out succeeding in the objective of improving the ground support conditions). Although successful predesign is the prime objective, subsequent modifications in mine lay- out and sequence of extraction operations are inevitable. In developing the modified solution, systematic experimentation based on an understanding of the underlying structural relationships, coupled with monitoring measurements of selected diagnostic structural-behavior parameters, can achieve an acceptable solution in a minimum number of steps, which is far superior to the typical operational trial-and-error approach, in view of the cost of implementing each successive change. Since a drill-core sample of ore rock from a successful undercut-cave operation may exhibit a uniaxial crushing strength in excess of 100 MPa, the caving of such a rock mass is now commonly believed to be ascribable to the presence of discontinuities such as joints or fractures throughout the ore body. An essential part of the present investigation was therefore to characterize the natural discontinuities at each of the test sites by measuring their attitudes and spacings. The term "fracture" is used herein in a general sense to include any planar discontinuity without implication as to its suggested mode of origin. Most, but not all, of the fractures are properly termed joints. As a point of departure we may consider the possibility that the rock mass is transected by three families of joints, each family possessing a distinct orientation, such that parallelepipeds of intact rock are delineated by the jointing. Even if cementation is absent between adjoining parallelepipeds, the undercutting of the rock mass will not necessarily initiate sustained caving--owing to the all-around confinement, an arch may tend to stabilize over the undercut unless prevented from doing so by the failures of key blocks of intact rock. The Queen Charlotte gold deposit (also known as the Specogna, Babe, or Cinola) was discovered in late 1970 by Efrem Specogna and Johnny Trico. They were prospecting along the trace of the Sandspit fault, and they sampled jarositic material that included veins from the fault zone. Their assays included some good gold values. They located the Babe Claims in 1971 and optioned them to Kennco Explorations Ltd. Kennco conducted stream sediment and soil geochem studies, geological mapping and drilling of 55.2 m (181 ft) in two drill holes. Kennco withdrew from the property, and by 1977, Cominco, Placer Development, Silver Standard, and Quintana Minerals had each successively worked on the deposit. Consolidated Cinola Mines bought the claims in 1977 and completed exploration of the deposit ultimately in a joint venture arrangement with Energy Reserves. Energy Reserves entered in late 1979, and by 1983, a total of 200 surface and 12 underground drill holes had been completed, totaling 28 600 m (93,832 ft). In addition, a 461.9 m (1515 ft) adit was driven in the ore body. Reserves published by Cinola aggregate 34 Mt (37 million st) of 1.7 g (0.060 oz) Au per tonne. All industry geologists working in the area agree that the Queen Charlotte gold is an epithermal gold deposit in porous volcaniclastic and clastic rocks that is genetically related to a Miocene-Pliocene rhyolite plug. The geologic description here follows the oral presentation made by G. G. Richards, J. S. Christie, and M. R. Wolfhard at a 1976 CIM meeting. Additional comments by the late C. S. Ney of Kennco Explorations are included with the Richards, Christie, and Wolfhard data to complete the geologic set- ting. The attached reprint by Champigny and Sinclair (1 980) provides additional data on the deposit. The Queen Charlotte (Babe, Specogna, or Cinola) gold deposit is located on Graham Island in the northern Charlotte Islands, at the fault boundary of the Skidegate plateau and the Charlotte lowlands. The Sandspit fault marks the physiographic boundary, and it is intruded by rhyolite porphyry at the deposit. Because displaced geochem anomalies, drain- age patterns, and topography suggest dextral and east side down movement for the fault, exposed east block rocks are younger than rocks west of the fault. The east block, which included the ore deposit, is a lowland largely masked by unconsolidated Pleistocene and Recent clastic rocks. Rocks west of the rhyolite plug, on the Skidegate plateau, are Cretaceous carbonaceous and calcareous shale unconformably overlain by a thin veneer of rhyolite tuff. The deposit is about 100 m (328 ft) above sea level. GEOLOGIC SETTING At the ore deposit, the Sandspit fault is a complex structure. However, lithologies on either side of the fault-controlled rhyolite porphyry plug are distinct. West of the rhyolite, the upper member of the Cretaceous Haida formation shale is the most common rock type. The member is composed of dark grey to black, poorly consolidated, and thinly bedded carbonaceous and calcareous shale. The sequence is silicified to an argillite or a hornfels near the rhyolite. West of the rhyolite porphyry plug, but not importantly involved in the mineralization, is a thin masking cover of rhyolite tuff. The tuff unconformably succeeds the cretaceous shale, but it is largely eroded in the mine area. East of the fault-controlled rhyolite porphyry plug is a thick section of conglomerate and sandstone of the Miocene- Pliocene Skonun formation. The ore body occurs within the coarse clastics, the rhyolite intrusive as the western boundary. Ore is entirely contained within the clastics. Original permeability of the clastic rocks was a major control for ore deposition and alteration, and for that reason, the Skonun formation is described in greater detail. The Skonun formation clastics unconformably overlie Haida shale. The Skonun is at least 300 m (984 ft) thick in the mine area, where it trends northerly and dips easterly 15º to 25º. The sequence is about 62 percent conglomerate, 3 1 percent coarse arkosic sandstone, and 7 percent interbedded siltstone and sandstone. Contacts between adjacent beds are generally sharp.
