1 Flotation Analogy To explain flotation in simpler terms the following analogy will be used. A factory (the flotation cell) manufactures a product (collector coated mineral). The product (collector coated mineral) is transported to market (the launder). A truck (the frother) is used to transport the product (collector coated mineral) to the market (the launder). The truck (the frother) transports the product over a road (the froth bed). The truck (the frother) and product (collector coated mineral) are supported by tires (the air). 2 Assumptions This operating philosophy assumes that the correct collector dosage is present along with the correct particle size distribution, pH conditions, etc. and that the minimum required frother dosage is correct. 3 Collector Addition The collector addition as used at a flotation plant is based on dosage rate as determined by the amount of mineral value entering the concentrator. Collector is normally added at two points in the concentrator: The primary flotation circuit and staged addition in the rougher scavenger circuit. Surveys have shown that the staged collector addition provides an increase in the kinetics and increases the recovery of the valued mineral in the rougher scavenger circuit. 4 Frother 4.1 Frother Dosage As explained in the above analogy, frother can be likened to the truck that transports the product (collector coated mineral) to market (the launder). Just as you would not use a truck rated at 15 tonnes to transport a 20 tonne load, you cannot expect to transport coarse minerals to the launder when there is insufficient frother present. Frother dosage must always be at, or above the minimum target. If less frother than the required minimum is used, then coarse mineral particles will not be supported and transported to launder where the mineral is recovered. To the naked eye the froth characteristics, even when insufficient frother is used, will appear to be correct. You cannot see the coarse particles that are not being recovered in the froth. (See Section 4.2 below for an explanation of why this occurs.)

Timely completion of each project, with measurable deliverables, is key to Six Sigma’s significant financial success. Implementation of Six Sigma has been growing in recent years in a wide range of industries. The heavy mineral industry, like many other industries, could benefit from what Six Sigma has to offer. Specific Six Sigma project examples are included from DuPont’s Heavy Mineral Production Plant in Florida.

Located south of downtown Seattle, the Beacon Hill Station & Tunnels is the key section of the southern segment of Sound Transit’s proposed new LINK light rail system. This paper presents an overview of the design, which includes 4,300 ft of segmentally-lined bore twin tunnels and a deep mined station. With platforms located156 feet below grade, the station itself is only the second large-scale mined station in soil the US. Its complex geometry combined with variable soil conditions—sands, silt sand clays with slickensides—challenged the designer’s to come up with a SEM-based design that addresses the owner’s risk, cost and schedule concerns.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND The American Concrete Institute defines shotcrete as "mortar or concrete conveyed through a hose and pneumatically projected at high velocity onto a surface." This definition thus includes what is traditionally known as gunite, which is a pneumatically applied mortar. In mining practice, the term shotcrete is restricted to pneumatically applied concrete, and this differentiation will be used in this chapter. In 1914, following the invention of the mortar gun in 1907, then chief engineer of the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) George Rice developed the gunite process for underground test work at the USBM facility at Bruceton, PA. After World War I, gunite was used extensively in American mines and was also utilized for underground civil works such as the San Jacinto tunnel in California. The greatest development was in Europe where, as early as 1911, gunite was successfully used as an overlay for deteriorated tunnel linings. In 1951, the Swiss firm Aliva developed a pneumatic gun capable of handling coarse aggregate, thus making possible the first use of shotcrete at the Maggia hydropower development. Initially, shotcrete was used to reduce manpower requirements for forming and placing conventional concrete. However, by 1954 Sonderegger was reporting that the structural advantages of shotcrete were derived from its flexibility and from the fact that it could be applied almost immediately after the opening had been made. The incorporation of wire mesh into the shotcrete led to the new Austrian tunnel method or NATM. The use of shotcrete in American mines has been implemented more recently. This delay seems to be due to previously unsuccessful experiences with gunite as a structural material and to the US reliance on wood or steel supports in main-line haulageways. The long experience with the apparently more substantial rigid supports led mine operators to be reluctant to accept the new and seemingly unrealistic lighter shotcrete support. APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS Shotcrete is a relatively new material for use in underground support systems. Consequently, experienced miners are not always available who are capable of applying the material effectively. Shotcrete, particularly in the small cross sections typical of mine shafts or haulageways, is applied in cramped quarters under less than ideal conditions. Adequate lighting should be made available. The surface should be clean and free of running or dripping water. It may be necessary to collect flowing water in plastic pipes or water collection devices. Any dry cement dust from previous shotcrete applications should be washed from the surface in order to assure a good bond. The US Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) while shooting test panels at the Cunningham tunnel in 1974, found that experienced shotcrete operators were able to obtain up to three times greater compressive strengths than were obtained by unskilled operators using the same equipment and shotcrete mix. ENVIRONMENTAL AND SAFETY REQUIREMENTS Since sodium and potassium hydroxide, as well as other moderately toxic compounds, are often contained in shotcrete (particularly where accelerators are used), safety precautions must be taken to prevent skin and respiratory irritation. Nozzlemen and helpers are required to wear gloves, protective clothing, and ventilation hoods with a filtered air supply. Respirators approved by USBM, equipped with chemical filters that will not pass the caustic mists, may be permitted in lieu of hoods if goggles or safety glasses are worn. Protective ointments are available to reduce skin irritation. All air and shotcrete feed hoses should be equipped with safety-type couplings and secured with safety chains at each coupling to prevent whipping in the event of a hose or coupling failure. Some environmental effects can take place down-stream from the development face being supported. The accelerator compounds, as well as the portland cement used in the shotcrete, will be found in the rebound material which falls to the invert of the heading. Since these compounds may be leached from the rebound material and carried by the drainage system, it may be necessary to install neutralizing or other water treatment facilities. Investigations may find that the final reaction with other compounds being leached from the mining operations may result in a more or less environmentally acceptable end product. USES OF SHOTCRETE General Uses Shotcrete, as a combination of cement, aggregate, and accelerator, is utilized for underground openings such as shafts, adits, haulageways, and service chambers for the following general purposes : (1) primary sup¬port; (2) final lining; (3) protective covering for excavated surfaces that are altered when exposed to air (the protective covering may be of a temporary or final nature); (4) protective covering for steel or wooden supports, rockbolts and rockbolt plates, heads, nuts, and other mats, including wire fabric, used to prevent rock-falls; and (5) as a lagging material in place of timber, steel, or concrete between steel or wooden supports. These applications can be grouped into three general use categories: shotcrete used as a rock sealant, shotcrete used as a safety measure, and shotcrete used as a structural support. Use as a Rock Sealant Thin applications of shotcrete can reduce or prevent slaking of shales or other rocks that are altered when exposed to the wetting and drying cycles created by mine ventilation circuits. While shotcrete may be effective in preventing such rock alteration, at the present time it is not as economical or efficient as other commercial sealants. However, if the sealant property can be incorporated into the structural support capability, the added contribution is usually helpful. Two cemented paste backfill (CPB) formulations containing pyritic tailings were leached in deionized water in flooded and alternating air-flooded environments and in a simulated acid rock drainage-type (ARD) solution. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), solid phase chemistry and acid-base accounting measurements documented the weathering characteristics of the CPB samples. Short-term exposures of the portland-CPB samples preferentially dissolved the cement binder to a greater extent than slag-Portland CPB mistures. In all cases, the added neutralizing potential provided to backfill by cement was short-lived and insufficient to neutralize the acid generating potential of the mixture.

Underground mine mapping is a critical component of understanding the controls on ground instability. Many relatively localized examples of ground failure are associated with geologic features, such as faults, joints, compaction zones, or sedimentological transition zones. In contrast, long-running, directional roof falls are associated with regionally directed horizontal stress fields, which are induced by tectonic plate interactions in the earth?s crust. When stress-related features are distinguished from geological features, underground mapping can be an effective method for inferring the direction of horizontal stress at individual mines. Comparisons with data compiled in the World Stress Map confirm that underground mapping can be a valid method for determining the orientation of maximum principal horizontal stress at a variety of scales, ranging from individual mines to an entire mining district or coal basin. Comparisons are presented between the maximum horizontal stress directions inferred by MSHA?s Roof Control Division through underground mapping and the azimuths of maximum horizontal stress in the World Stress Map database for North America?s Pennsylvanian-aged Appalachian, Illinois, Black Warrior, and Arkoma Basin coal fields. The comparison indicates that azimuths are similar for both data sets, even where variations in the direction of horizontal stress are present. It is interpreted that inconsistencies in direction are attributable to near-surface affects such as deeply incised stream valleys, or to fault zones that represent heterogeneities in the crust.

Pillar recovery has been associated with nearly one third of roof fall fatalities in underground coal mines during the past decade. Safe pillar recovery requires global stability and local stability. Global stability is addressed primarily through pillar design. The local stability risk factors include cut sequence, the final pillar stump, supplemental supports (timbers vs. Mobile Roof Supports (MRS)), roof bolting, and many others. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has evaluated each of these factors through field research and analysis of accident statistics. The paper discusses design methods and technologies that have been transferred to the mining community and implemented.

This chapter contains the edited transcript of the "Gold Heap Leach Information Exchange" session that was held at the 1990 SME/AIME Annual Meeting in Salt Lake City, Utah. The exchange occurred on the afternoon of February 27, 1990. The session was intended to act as a forum for discussing some of the more prominent operating problems associated with heap leaching precious metals. The information exchange was very successful. The exchange consisted of several panelists introducing and discussing different topics, follow by a comment and question period. This transcript contains the panelists' presentations as well as comments and questions from the floor and the panel. Extraneous comments and remarks have been edited out. Some wording has been changed for clarity, but the transcript is basically an accurate account of what was said. At the end of the transcript are two papers submitted as part of the panel discussion

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is a geologic repository for disposal of transuranic waste and is operated by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The repository is located at a depth of 655 m in the Permian age salt beds of the Salado Formation, 40 km east of Carlsbad, NM. A key component in the design of the WIPP repository is the installation of concrete structures as panel seals in the intake and exhaust drifts after a panel has been filled with waste containers. The DOE has proposed several panel closure design modifications to the EPA. EPA approval of the changes is required since the details of the designs are specified in EPA’s final rule as a condition for WIPP certification. The Environmental Evaluation Group, in its role of providing technical oversight on the WIPP project, has evaluated the proposed modifications. An analysis of this evaluation is discussed.

Froth flotation is now, the most commonly used method for cleaning fine-coal fractions in coal-preparation plants. Past research and industrial practice have demonstrated that froth flotation achieves excellent separation efficiencies for fine coals having only a small fraction of middling particles. However, the efficiency of froth flotation decreases sharply as the concentration of middling particles increases. This is due to the flotation of high-ash particles that have a small amount of hydrophobic coal present at the surface. Because gravity-based processes are much more efficient for the treatment of middlings, the application of centrifugal washing for fine-coal cleaning was studied with an emphasis on the primary cleaning of fine-circuit feed. Results are shown of a parametric study that used a semibatch Falcon centrifugal concentrator. The results of the study revealed that separation performance is a function of particle size, bowl geometry, feed solids content and feed rate.

Theoretical investigation and laboratory experimentation have shown a great potential for jet fan ventilation in mines. Jet fans, also called induction fans due to the induction effect of the fluid jet to ventilate headings, may have particular application in remote-controlled production operations. This paper summarizes ongoing research using a scaled laboratory model. The model uses water as a fluid medium and simulates a typical 25m long heading of 1.5mx6m cross-section. The effects of various nozzle positions and designs have been investigated by using still photography as a tool for flow visualization. It is also found that the use of jets in combination with line curtains has enhanced the overall ventilating effect in the model entry.

The Bureau of Mines' Denver Research Center initiated a subsidence research program in 1978. The short ten goals of the program were to determine practical methods and equipment for measuring subsidence and demonstrate these methods by monitoring subsidence at several mines having mining, geologic and topographic variables typical of those encountered in the western United States. Data from the monitoring program would be supplied to cooperating mining companies and used by the Bureau to accomplish the long term objective of developing and validating subsidence prediction techniques applicable to mines in the West. Subsidence monitoring is being conducted at five mines in Colorado and Utah with substantially different mine plans, mining methods, depths of cover, and topography. The monitoring procedures used at each site are similar and include designing the monitoring network layout, installing the subsidence monuments, initial and periodic surveying of the monuments, and processing the survey data. The network layout, surveying methods, and types of monuments vary according to the conditions at the individual sites and the type of data being collected.

The greatest part of crushed stone, gravel and sand production is extracted through open pit operations, whereas gravel and sand are also partially extracted from riverbeds. Its obvious that such a mining activity provokes some changes in the configuration and environmental characteristics of the region, in the temporary or permament disapperance of vegetable or animal species and in the creation of noise, dust and waste water. However, the above-mentioned mining operations shouldn not have only negative effects on the landscape and land potential, but they can discover and predetermine the potential of the exploited areas for various communal purposes after exploitation (eg. sports and recreation centers, campsites, resorts, fish-farms, etc.). In this paper, the production of construction aggregates in plants located in the vicinity of Zagreb, the capital of Croatia is presented. The advantages and disadvantages of aggregates? production in urban areas in the spirit of sustainable development are discussed.

[Currently the cost of carrying out 'in situ' geotechnical investigation programmes or installing and operating monitoring systems at construction or mining sites is rising var." rapidly. This is primarily because of our ever increasing labour rates. As a result of this problem efforts are no,, being made develop techniques for the economical; collection of large quantities of geotechnical data relating, to such problems as done stability evaluation, the behaviour of underground openings, or 'in situ' testing procedures. The efforts to reduce the labour content. are particularly apparent in those procedures which have traditionally been manpower intensive e.g. 'in situ' permeability testing where an entire drilling crew and their associated eguipment have been on standby while testis has been carried out; or data collection in underground construction operations where much tine is typically wasted obtaining or maintaining access to instrument sites. In an attempt to illustrate one specialist consulting company's approach to the problem of reducing investigation costs, this rarer examines four recent developments in the field of geotechnical investigation and monitoring which have come about during the last two Years as a result of cur research and development programme. Although these techniques and devices have been developed for specific projects, they all have broad applications in the geotechnical field and they are indicative of the direction in which this company feels developments will take place.]

Ceremonies for the induction of four mining industry pioneers into the National Mining Hall of Fame will be held Saturday, Sept. 22, 2007 at the Charles F. Barber Pavilion (Museum Convention Center) in Leadville, CO. The four inductees are James Harold Courtright (1908-1986), Dr. Howard L. Hartman (1924-2002), Charles Washington Merrill (1869-1956) and Kenyon E. Richard (1915-1993). The inductions will bring to 197 the number of mining “greats” whose engraved photographs and biographical sketches are installed in the National Mining Hall of Fame.

The nature of water and clay in carbonate rocks is currently being investigated at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute by various thermal and sorption techniques. Two basic concepts 'led to the present research. (1) To explain the expansion and contraction on wetting and drying of some unsound argillaceous carbonate rocks, it was postulated that the pore space around each clay particle is such that when water is sorbed by the clay, force is exerted against the pore walls. (2) The clays in expansive rocks are rejected from the growing dolomite crystals during their growth, and form a more or less connected network, thereby becoming "wettable," or available to water. New quantitative cold differential-thermal-analysis (electrocalorimetric) equipment was designed and constructed to check the "limited space" and "wettable clay" concepts and to determine the thermal nature of the transition of water to ice in rocks. This DTA equipment can detect the release of heat in freezing of less than 0.001 per cent water in a rock. Twenty-three rock cores (nine sound and fourteen unsound) and 4 procelain cylinders for standards were studied. In the nine sound rocks and in all the procelain cylinders, the rapid freezing of from 50 to 100 per cent of the water was readily detectable after 7 to 10° C of supercooling. No further freezing could be detected to -20° C. However, in eleven of the fourteen unsound rocks, no freezing was detected to as low as -40° C; in the other three, less than 50 per cent of the water froze. As a check of the DTA measurements, adsorption isotherms were determined for all materials. Calculations of theoretical freezing points for sorbed water again demonstrated that the least sound rocks had the most nonfreezable water. "Frost" sensitivity in these carbonate rocks is, therefore, probably not the result of the force of expansion of water to ice. The disruptive force is believed to result from expansion of sorbed, ordered water on clay surfaces. The relationship between the unfilled rock pores after 24-hour water saturation and the water sorbed at 85 per cent humidity at 30° C (i.e., the theoretical nonfreezable water delineates the sound and unsound carbonate rocks.

INTRODUCTION Gas hydrates have considerable potential to be a major energy resource owing to their apparent abundance in Arctic regions and along continental margins throughout the world (Kvenvolden, 1988). Yet, the oil and gas industry has been slow to pursue this opportunity. The primary reasons for this are the large conventional reserve base for natural gas worldwide and the perception that gas hydrate will not be a viable resource for another twenty or thirty years. Gas hydrates are thus viewed as a potential resource for the distant future, but not a valid investment for the near term. This paper addresses both global gas markets and gas hydrate technology, and shows that the commercial development of gas hydrate could proceed rapidly enough to constitute a near-term energy resource. GLOBAL GAS MARKETS The proven worldwide reserves of conventional natural gas are truly enormous, totaling over 6,000 TCF according to BP (2004). Moreover, those reserves have nearly doubled during the past two decades and now represent 67 years of consumption at the current production rates of 80 TCF per year (Fig. 1). This reserve increase has occurred even as global production of natural gas has increased by 67% during the same two decades (Fig. 2). While declining conventional gas reserves are a concern in North America, especially in regions where established infrastructure exists to bring gas to consumers, large new discoveries continue to be made elsewhere in the world. Indeed, in many parts of the world (such as the Middle East and parts of West Africa), natural gas has been regarded as an essentially worthless byproduct of oil production or exists in stranded gas fields. Given this situation, pursuing unconventional gas resources that are inherently riskier exploration targets and more expensive to produce would appear to have little rationale from a business standpoint.

The US Bureau of Mines studied the mechanism of shear flocculation of silica with stearic acid. At pH 6 and 12, shear flocculation of silica was not observed with the addition of up to 4.5 x 10-4 M (5 lb/st) stearic acid. However, in the presence of 0.1 M NaCl at pH 6, shear-flocculation was observed at stearic acid concentrations = 10-4 M (22.5 lb/st). Adsorption of stearic acid on silica was studied using stearic acids spin-labeled with a doxyl group. The presence of the spin-labeling group did not greatly affect the shear flocculation properties of stearic acid. Adsorption of labeled stearic acid on silica was measured as a function of surfactant concentration with electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy and gas chromatography (GC). The GC results indicated that the stearic acid was predominately adsorbed on the surface at concentrations above 10-4 M. From the EPR spectra, the formation of aggregates of stearic acid was apparent at concentrations of approximately 10-5 M (22.5 lb/st). The results are discussed in terms of a possible mechanism for shear flocculation.

The future of the world's minerals industries is often painted as bleak. Peter Drucker has repeatedly proposed that the demand for minerals has become "uncoupled" from world economic growth.' This implies that, while mineral demand was in the past linked to the growing demand for and consumption of goods and services, further world development will not require substantial mineral inputs. Lester Thurow noted that for these reasons the US minerals industry is diminishing in scale and economic importance.2 There is some documented evidence of such uncoupling, and the demand for minerals may indeed diminish in the future. But such announcements are, to this point, no more than speculation. For instance, is it not just as likely that renewed environmental concerns will cause increased demand for the relatively innocuous environmental properties of metals, replacing plastics? And even if the prophesied demand decreases do occur, a sufficient fall in metal prices due to technological advances could increase the quantity of minerals demanded above current levels, in spite of leftward shifting demand curves. Thus, worldwide mineral production activity may increase or decrease in the future and no one can say whether more or fewer of the earth's citizens will become involved in the extraction and processing of minerals.
