"Tailings Engineering has the responsibility for planning and coordinating tailings disposal and for ensuring the stability of the tailings dyke. The inclusion of both the planning and geotechnical functions in one team has resulted in greater efficiency in the design and planning process. Major challenges in tailings disposal facing Syncrude are in the areas of: (1) sludge disposal; (2) instrumentation and monitoring; and (3) liquefaction. Meeting these challenges will have a significant effect on the cost effectiveness and reliability of the mining operation.IntroductionThe size of the tailings disposal operation has led to the establishment of a large engineering team devoted solely to the disposal of tailings. "This paper describes qualitatively the progressive are losses and rock dilution in a mining project from the geological modelling to and including the concentration. A simple theoretical model of the net present value of a deposit, assuming a log-normal grade frequency function, is used to find the pair of decisions on rate of production and cut-off grade, which maximizes the net present value. Various degrees of ore losses and rock dilution are then applied on this optimum, and the resulting decreasing net present values are calculated, as well as the increasing cost of metal and the increasing metal losses as a function of are losses and rock dilution.IntroductionDue to a variety of uncertainties, to inevitable lack of precision in deposit estimation and in mine planning, and due to production constraints, ore losses and rock dilution occur throughout the many phases of a mining project. The phases range from the geological definition of the orebody, over the cut-off grade optimization and decision, over the design of the mining method and the actual mining to the ore dressing, where the final loss of valuable ore into the tailings occurs. Quantification of ore losses and rock dilution are mostly difficult if not simply impossible to obtain. At the end-phase an estimate of the total dilution may be obtained with some degree of precision by observations of the amounts and analysis of concentrate and tailings. It is much more difficult to estimate the total ore losses because the uncertainty of the geological modelling in the initial phase and in the mining phase is very difficult to quantify, despite the use of geostatistics for grade estimation.Many attempts at quantification of ore losses and rock dilution have been made and some examples are shown in Table I. Although they differ widely from each other, it is obvious from these figures that ore losses and rock dilution are significant and have considerable effects on the economical results of a mining operation. "Rare earth elements have obtained significant attention during the last few years due to predicted increase in their demand. Several projects worldwide are at pre-feasibility or feasibility stage aiming to commence production. Deposits of rare earth elements are typically complex and multi-metallic of nature. This means that production processes are often also complex and therefore, various metallurgical unit processes are needed. Outotec’s equipment and technology portfolio is very comprehensive and includes hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical apparatus and processes applicable to the efficient exploitation of rare earth deposits. Outotec has gained useful experience relevant to the processing of rare earths through several assignments including those for Alkane Resources Ltd. (Dubbo Zirconia Project), Greenland Minerals and Energy Ltd (Kvanefjeld Project), Frontier Rare Earths Limited (Zandkopsdrift project), Tantalus Rare Earths AG (Madagascar), Quest Rare Metals (Strange Lake project) and Orbite Aluminae Inc. (HPA project). The hydrometallurgical test work of two process flowsheets is presented in the paper. A roasting or acid baking step is common to several proposed rare earth projects. In the past, rotary kilns have been used, but Outotec has developed a new process concept to handle the rare earth material in fluid bed reactors. The basis for this development is long experience in fluid bed technology of Outotec in Germany. One advantage of fluid bed roasting is the higher throughput per unit. In combination with the roasting and baking, Outotec offers the gas cleaning and acid plant and provides a complete and closed concept.INTRODUCTIONRecovery of rare earth elements (REE) has obtained significant attention during recent years. It has been estimated that their demand will be boosted because of their need in many technology areas. REE can be utilized in magnets, batteries, displays, catalysts, optical devices etc. (Jordens, Cheng, & Waters, 2013; Zhang & Edwards, 2013). The production of REE is focused in China, which means that production outside of China is very scarce. However, there are multiple active development projects worldwide working towards production of REE containing products outside of China (Chen, 2011)."

"Future Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) power plants will have superior environmental performance and unmatched efficiency.The Shell Coal Gasification Process (SCGP) is a clean coal technology, which can convert a wide range of coals into clean syngas for high efficiency electricity generation in an IGCC plant. SCGP flexibility has been demonstrated for feeds ranging from bituminous coals to lignites and petroleum coke, and the process is ideally suited for combined cycle power generation, resulting in efficiencies of 42% to 46% (LHV).In the Netherlands, a 250 MWe coal gasification combined cycle plant based on Shell technology is being built by Demkolec, a development partnership of the Dutch Electricity Generating Board (N. V. Sep). The plant is scheduled to start up in 1993. IntroductionBasic ConceptShell's experience with gasification dates back to the 1950s, when the first Shell Gasification Process was commissioned with oil as feedstock. There are now over 140 SGP gasifiers licensed. The experience gained on oil gasification provided a firm theoretical and practical base for the start of coal gasification process development in 1972.At that time, there were serious concerns about the future availability and price of crude oil. Coal gasification (making carbon monoxide and hydrogen by the partial oxidation of coal) was considered to be an important option for refinery applications, because the synthesis gas (syngas) produced can be used as:• a chemical feedstock for making transportation fuels and chemicals;• a source of hydrogen (making use of the water gas shift reaction) for upgrading petroleum products; and• a fuel for heating process streams and/or generating electricity."

"Sedimented hydrothermal precipitates of silica, now fine-grained quartz, are described from a Pb-Zn-bearing vein system. Their discrimination from the wall-accreted fine-grained quartz that is common in the shallow parts of epithermal systems is discussed. Local fine-grained (<0.3 mm) quartz accumulations occur in a suite of veins with otherwise normal drusiform and crustified infills. This sediment may fill the vein above chokes in steep segments (axial plugs), or form continuous layers within the footwall material where the vein is inclined at low to moderate angles. Pads of fine-grained sediment are deposited on the upwards-facing surfaces of wall-rock clasts and of drusiform crystals growing from the vein walls. The asymmetry of these deposits differentiates them from the more common symmetrical, crustified walllining deposits of fine-grained quartz and opaline silica, and requires a gravity-controlled, sedimentary depositional mechanism.Thin section examination shows that much of the fine-grained quartz is present as elongate prisms. The prism habit was present soon after deposition, but it is not possible to identify unequivocally the original sedimented grains. Sedimentation of vein- and wall-rock-derived detritus is also recognized. Deposition of the fine-grained sediment accompanies normal in situ drusiform growth of quartz and other vein minerals. The mammilated and spherulitic textures associated with accretion of amorphous quartz are entirely absent from the Tyndrum veins with sedimented materials. The literature on modern hydrothermal waters and physical chemistry of silica precipitation shows that precipitates of silica suspended in hydrothermal fluids are amorphous and derived from colloidal silica. It is argued that much of the suspended silica was present as quartz at the time of deposition or was converted from amorphous silica almost immediately after deposition.Hydrothermal sediments and their distribution potentially provide information on flow directions and velocity in veins. Plugs of sediment obstruct vertical flow and lead to local flows with large horizontal components. It is shown that sedimentation features occur in other deposits and can involve other minerals. If the features seen here can be scaled up to the size of major veins, they may result in up and downdip variations in mineral assemblages and abundances, which may affect grade."

A new pyrometallurgical process is proposed for cleaning complex copper matte and for recovering copper from copper scrap containing lead. In the process, a given amount of pig iron is added to the complex material under a reducing condition to produce two or three liquid phases at the equilibrium, depending on the content of sulfur in system, of copper-rich and iron-rich alloys, and matte, respectively. The novel process is proposed based on the experimental results obtained by performing laboratory scale tests in an electrical furnace at 1473 K followed by a quenching method on the final stage. The samples obtained from the experiments were analyzed by using Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS), Inductively Couple Plasma (ICP) and Carbon Infrared Spectrometry (CIS) techniques. The results were discussed on the basis of the distribution of lead as impurity in the miscibility gap where equilibrated phases coexist. According to the mass balance calculations, the elimination of lead into the iron-rich alloy phase as a harmless and smaller deposit might be feasible and the process proposed for cleaning the complex matte would be promising.

Five major historical steps can be identified for metallurgical processing as shown in Table I .Gravity concent ration started with, for example, river bed panning and developed to more sophisticated processes such as the Johnson concentrator, belt concentrator and jigs. The South African gold fields were a major developer of gravity concentration processes during the first half of the twentieth century.As coarse free gold became depleted, stamp milling, in conjunction with amalgamat ion , was developed. Basically, rock was crushed under large mechanical hammers an d the gold collected in mercury . The mercury was then evaporated in a retort to leave sponge gold for further fire refining.As deposits became deeper and gold finer, the gold became more difficult to recover ; fine grinding was required to liberate the gold. In the 18905, MacArthur and the Forrest Brothers of Glasgow, Scotland, introduced the cyanide pro cess for dissolution of gold and its subsequent precipitaiton by means of zinc. This process, in vogue until the early 1970s, was commonly referred to as the Merrill-Crowe process for recovering fine gold .Activated charcoal was used as a means of recovering gold from solution in the 1880s, especially in chlorination plants in Australia( l). Two factors probably retarded the development of carbon instead of zinc-based processes during those year s. First , there was no satisfactory procedure for the elution of carbon to allow its recycling and, second, the development of the Merrill-Crewe process for gold recovery by zinc cementation probably discouraged any further work on the use of carbon"

"The Suncor Oil Sands Mine located north of Fort McMurray, Alberta, produces about 80000 m&apos; per day of tailings waste which must be disposed of economically in an environmentally acceptable manner. To date, this has been accomplished by impounding the high water content tailings wastes behind large dykes, many of which approach 100 m in height .The dykes are constructed using suitable overburden material stripped prior to the mining of the oil sands feed and/ or the coarse sandy fraction of the tailings waste itself. Although the above is common practice at many mining operations, the large volumes handled and the resultant costs require designs to be meticulously fine-tuned toward the optimum. As a result, considerable effort is expended on planning, designing and construction, and performance monitoring. The lack of precedent experience (Suncor pioneered oil sands mining), coupled with the realities of long, harsh winters and a variety of troublesome site conditions and construction materials, has led to some very unique dyke construction.This paper overviews current tailings disposal plans as welt as some of the key issues related to the design, construction and performance of these large dykes."

"As a kind of non-metallic material, high-purify quartz sand has been widely used in many fields. Flotation is a popular way to process quartz sand. But it is in difficult position for flotation to get high-purify quartz product due to large amount of coarse particles contained in the feed. In this paper, a design principle of special flotation cell for high-purify quartz sand has been put forward base on ore property analysis and laboratory test, and the pilot scale special flotation cell has been developed to meet the requirement of the quartz sand flotation process. The special flotation cell for high-purify quartz sand is featured by middle positioned impeller, false bottom and draft tube, which could decrease the rising distance of mineralized bubble and strengthen the circulation capacity of the lower part of the flotation cell. Hydrodynamic study indicates that high air dispersion degree and strong lower slurry circulation could be produced by pilot scale special flotation cell, which is helpful to create a suitable hydrodynamic environment for quartz sand processing.INTRODUCTIONNatural quartz is a non-metallic mineral, which is widely used as raw material in multiple industry process (Shifu, 2006). High purity quartz, especially containing more than 99.9% silicon dioxide, is characterized by high temperature resistance, small thermal expansion coefficient, highly insulating and so on. The demand of high purity quartz has been rising along with social and economic development, now high purity quartz is widely used in the field of photovoltaic industry, electronic information, communications and aerospace industry.Quartz is a kind of main rocking-forming minerals in the nature. There are seven genetic types, such as natural crystal, quartz sandstone, quartzite, vein quartz, konilite, natural siliceous sand, granite quartz (Baolei, Shuilin, & Dianchao, 2012). The natural crystal is primarily used as raw material to refine high purity quartz, but it is not available for two reasons. On the one hand, the natural crystal is extremely expensive and poor in resources reserves, which can not satisfy the need of large-scale industrial production. On the other hand, the chemical component of natural crystal is instability, it may lead to low stable product performance in large industrial applications, and it is also difficult to achieve raw materials standardization. Therefore, there are a lot of studies to search for other technological methods to obtain high purity quartz from other genetic quartz types."

Ferrihydrite is ubiquitous in soils, groundwater and aquatic sediments and is usually classified as "2-line" or "6-line" according to the number of diffuse XRD peaks. It has high surface area and reactivity; therefore, it may serve as a sink for sequestering trace metals, metalloids and organic matters via adsorption and co-precipitation. Although considerable attention was paid to the transformation process of this thermodynamically metastable solid, there are still some controversies on the mechanisms of the formation of goethite or hematite from the ferrihydrite precursor. This work systematically investigated the transformation of 2-line ferrihydrite produced by using different neutralization regent (CaO vs. NaOH) into crystalline products at different pHs (4, 7 and 8), three temperatures (25, 40, 75 °C) and in different media (sulfate vs. nitrate). X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and chemical extraction were employed to characterize the transformed solids as well as the redistribution of Fe between the amorphous and more crystalline phases. The results showed that the transformation product in nitrate media was hematite (major) and goethite (minor), which was independent of pH, temperature or neutralization reagent. In sulfate media, goethite was the dominant solid under slightly acidic conditions (pH 4) with 6-line ferrihydrite as the intermediate product, whereas neutral to slightly alkaline conditions still favor the formation of hematite. Chemical extraction results indicated that there was only ~3 % of amorphous phase detectable after aging at 25 °C for 280 days at slight acidic pH. In contrast,~70 % of the iron remained as an amorphous phase under neutral to slightly alkaline conditions. The results suggested that the pH as well as the reaction media (sulfate ion) plays an important role in the 2-line ferrihydrite transformation process.

An original method is used to obtain stable nanoparticles of gold-based mono- and bimetallic systems supported on an acidic zeolite. This approach has been applied to PtHY (1wt% Pt) and to bimetallic Pt-AuHY containing 1% of platinum to which is added the amount of gold required to give Au/Pt molar ratios of 20,40,60 and 80%. Metal clusters of Au or Pt-AuHY are formed inside the supercages of the zeolite framework by the thermal reduction of cations by the ligands (en = H2N-CH2-CH2-NH2) under inert gas flow at a temperature depending on the metal. The use of acidic zeolites favours the dispersion of the metal and the thermal stability of the particles. This stability is explained by chemical anchoring of metal clusters by the Brønsted sites of the support. Several techniques have proved that for a molar ratio of 20% metal particles of Pt-AuHY are bimetallic. The segregation of Pt and Au starts for molar ratio =?40%. The catalysts tested on the methylcyclopentane hydroconversion reaction reveal that the addition of gold to platinum leads to an increase in the activity and an improvement in the selectivity for isomerization of the skeleton (cyclohexane and benzene) to the detriment of hydrogenolysis. Similar results were obtained for the dodecane isomerisation to isododecane. These catalysts were also tested in CO, propene and propane oxidation. The activity of fresh catalysts is rather low. It increases after their pretreatment in oxygen or hydrogen atmosphere. In propene oxidation in the reaction mixture O2 ? H2, beside total oxidation of propene to CO2, also propene hydrogenation was observed, particularly at low temperatures. The presence of Au enhances the hydrogenation properties: high selectivities (> 90%) to propane and high propane yields on PtAu HY are observed up to ~150oC, whereas for Pt HY catalyst the selectivity and yield to C3H8 decreases rapidly with the temperature beginning from ~100oC.

"The coals of the Sydney and Pictou coalfields are generally classed as high volatile ""A "" and medium volatile bituminous coals but there are significant differences within and even beyond this rank. These are related to the observation that the coalification in eastern Canada is essentially post-deformational, resulting in a general increase of rank with depth in individual seams.Exploration drilling in the Sydney coalfield has shown that the rank increases offshore to M. V. bituminous at mineable depths and in the Pictou field to L. V. bituminous coal. There is also a marked easterly shift in rank within one seam at the same depth at Sydney, with the result that M. V. coal will be reached sooner in the Donkin Reserve area (at 700 m depth) than in the Lingan-No , 26 Reserve area (at 900 m depth). These rank changes are important for the manufacturing of metallurgical coke as shown with coke stability predictions based on petrographic analyses. The L. V. coal of the Pictou field can be used for blending purposes and is the only known L. V. deposit of mineable thickness in eastern Canada.In addition, the vertical rank changes between seams have been studied in ten boreholes. They are not constant within the confines of the Sydney coalfield. Four separate areas can be recognized, each with different coalification gradients, which can be related to changes in the paleogeothermal gradients . Variations of 2.5 degrees to 6. 7 degrees CI IOO m are indicated and geological causes for these changes are suggested.IntroductionThe Sydney coalfield is the largest and most important field in eastern Can ad a, and although it has been in production some 200 years, the remaining ""demonstrated "" resources of 1.6 billion metric tons can extend its production capability for at least another 100 years. All coals mined are high volatile "" A"" bituminous and have been used for both thermal and metallurgical purposes. For the latter rank variations even of a minor scale are of critical importance for the manufacturing of metallurgical coke.The significance at the present time of the Pictou coalfield, which has only modest remaining "" demonstrated"" resources of 60 million metric ton s, lies in the discovery in 1975 of a 14-million-ton deposit of low volatile bituminous coal. It is the only known low-volatile coal in eastern Canada and is suitable for use as a blend for metallurgical coal. As such, it could supply the Sydney coke ovens for a period of 30 years at the current rate o f coke production and replace imported American low volatile coal.Consequently, coal rank studies of the Sydney and Pictou fields are important not only from a geological point of view, but also because of economic considerations."

They also draw on the work of two men in particular, Douglas Bray and William Byham, both of whom have contributed significantly to the understanding of supervisory development and training.IntroductionYears ago, there was not much training for supervisors. They worked under an authoritarian style of management and modelled themselves on it. They were generally selected for their skill as miners, mill operators or mechanics. Things have changed. Today, companies have different needs. The selection of supervisors is far too important to rely on guesswork. Progressive companies want supervisors who think like managers - supervisors who know how to plan and organize, set performance standards and monitor them, analyze problems, develop solutions, show sound judgment and deal effectively with people. The evaluation of these supervisory ""dimensions"" is best accomplished through the use of an assessment centre. The Assessment Centre Method increases the accuracy of predicting the future success of candidates being considered for promotion.Mining and other resource companies use assessment centres to select the most suitable people for supervision. The Assessment Centre Method is based on extensive research. It eliminates hit-and-miss selection methods by using several different exercises that simulate the problems and activities that candidates would face if they were promoted into supervision . In other words, they get a realistic "" sample"" of the supervisor&apos;s job and are required to deal with and manage interpersonal and problematic circumstances."

"Anglo American Platinum’s Rustenburg Base Metals Refiners (RBMR) produces Ni and Cu cathode from slow cooled converter matte after Platinum Group Metals (PGMs) are magnetically separated for further processing. In 2010, execution of the RBMR expansion project was commenced to increase the production capacity to 33 ktpa Ni. The expansion, which is currently still in a ramp-up stage, brought about several fundamental changes to the circuit chemistry, including the installation of a dedicated Pressure Iron Removal (PIR) autoclave. This provided an independent outlet for iron from the refinery, which previously deported to the residue from the leach circuit and was toll refined. At the same time as changes in the circuit associated with the RBMR expansion were being made, the plant experienced a significant increase in iron and copper units per nickel unit in the feed. The decoupling of the leaching and iron removal process steps has had significant advantages for the robustness and control of the overall circuit, in particular pertaining to the preparation of a nickel electrolyte of sufficient purity to produce LME grade nickel. This paper details the primary changes to the RBMR circuit chemistry with a particular focus on iron deportment and the benefits derived from the installation of the PIR autoclave.INTRODUCTIONAnglo American Platinum mines and refines Platinum Group Metals (PGMs) through a complex processing pipeline in its South African operations. Mined ore is first treated through several mineral processing stages, geared to the recovery of base metals and associated PGMs, followed by smelting and refining operations that aim to separate base metals from PGMs and recover the value components to purified, saleable products. The focus of this paper is the Rustenburg Base Metals Refiners (RBMR) complex which receives a PGM-containing converter matte, then physically separates PGMs and base metals, and recovers nickel and copper to cathode by utilising leaching, precipitation and electrowinning processes.With new mining operations coming online and the continued increase in PGM ore arisings, it was necessary to undertake an expansion project at the Base Metal Refinery (BMR) to increase production capacity from 21 ktpa to 33 ktpa Ni. Complicating the expansion project was the requirement of continued production through all stages of design, construction and implementation and, due to stringent capital constraints, the utilisation of all existing equipment installed during a previous expansion in 1981. Against this backdrop, the expanded BMR flow sheet involved significant changes to the chemistry, especially iron management. These changes in iron management allowed for the separation of iron and copper residues and significantly increased the robustness of the plant to changes in feed mineralogy as well as the potential to increase production duties of the existing equipment."

"Fifty years of wear on the original carbon steel shaft of this hydro turbine necessitated repair operations in 1980. Both austenitic and martensitic stainless steels have been used individually as journal materials in separate trials on an80-inch long and 22-inch diameter radial bearing but neither one nor the other has been successful.The wear and cracking problems of the stainless steels leading to the present abandonment of both classes of stainless steel are described. In particular the dependence of the toughness of type 410 stainless steel on its tempering temperature and the susceptibility of that steel to quench cracking are highlighted because problems have been caused by both of these metallurgical factors.IntroductionAs part of a desire to improve the efficiency of a fifty-year old hydro-electric generating station on the Saint John River, the decision was made to change the journal and bearing material for the shaft bearings, which are stave-type bearings. For the initial fifty years of operation the bearings had been wooden (lignum vitae) and had run on the carbon steel shaft directly. For one of the four unit s at this station the performance of this combination has been truly excellent, and the remaining three sets of bearings had performed well. However there had been shaft wear on the units and the wear had made the shafts somewhat elliptical when a decision was made to install some sort of new journal on to three of the old shafts. [In addition to the wear on the carbon steel journals it was found that one shaft was significantly softer in the bearing area than it was immediately above the bearings (180 Vickers in comparison with 230 to 250 Vickers)] ."

Long range mine planning involves developing a mining sequence that schedules the extraction of the ore and waste materials within a final pit limit. The objective is to define a sequence that best meets the defined strategic objectives. The main steps in the creation of an open pit mine plan are the final pit limit design, the design and sequencing of the mining phases, equipment selection and operating cost estimation. Flexibility is the key strategic element in developing a mine plan. Planning the extraction sequences and rates for the various mining areas is a challenging and demanding activity. It is often necessary to consider numerous alternative strategies and what if scenarios. The number of alternatives that can be studied with limited manpower and time resources is restricted. In order to investigate strategic aspects of mine planning, a system to generate workable mine plans rapidly is required. The concept of Visual Mine Planning is that the engineer can visualize the current plan, easily change a component of the plan, such as the annual cut-off grade schedule or the production rate within a particular Phase, and immediately see the effect on the mineralogical and cash flows. If the desired result is not achieved, a change is made and the effect is again immediately seen. This paper presents results of research in this area conducted at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. The work includes the examination of cut-off grade strategy, sequencing, blending, stockpiling and shovel-truck fleet requirements using simulation.
