The Suurikuusikko gold deposit was discovered in 1987 in western Finnish Lapland, 54 km NNE from the town centre of KittilS in the volcanic belt of Central Lapland. It is hosted by tholeiitic basalts in a graphite-bearing albitite breccia. The ore is located in subvertical shear zones characterised by strong albitisation, carbonatisation and sulfidisation. The ore minerals consist of arsenopyrite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, tetrahedrite, bournonite and rutile. Small amounts of pyrrhotite, gersdorffite, jamesonite, bornite, gudmundite, tetrahedrite, stibnite, kermesite, berthierite and native Sb are also present. Gold occurs as invisible and as 1 - 2 ¦m size inclusions in arsenopyrite and pyrite, on their grain boundaries and in fractures. The average amount of gold leached by cyanide is 2.93 per cent. The æinvisibleÆ gold contents were studied in pyrite and arsenopyrite by electron microprobe analysis (EPMA) and secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) at CANMET/ MTL. Gold element distribution images show zoned patterns both in pyrite and arsenopyrite. SIMS analyses range from 343 to 55 ppm Au in arsenopyrite and from 217 ppm down to 0.32 ppm (detection limit 478 ppb) Au in pyrite. EPMA results range from 939 to below the detection limit 24 ppm Au in arsenopyrite and from 267 ppm to below 22 ppm Au in pyrite. Recovery of the refractory gold ore was studied using grinding, flotation, bio-oxidation and cyanidation tests. A sulfide bulk concentrate containing 40 ppm Au was obtained by flotation at 90 per cent recovery (As content 5.5 per cent, S content 22 per cent, and mass recovery 15 per cent). The grinding fineness in flotation was P80 -100 to 120 ¦m. At the original fineness the cyanidation recovery from the concentrate was lower than ten per cent, after ultra-fine grinding P80 -10 to 2 ¦m the Au recovery was less than 17 per cent. After bio- oxidation, Au recovery of 95 per cent was obtained in carbon-in-leach (CIL). The bio-oxidation time was two weeks in laboratory test, but after regrinding the oxidation rate was faster and recovery of Au higher. However, the selected method for the mining to be started in summer 2008 is open pit mining and mineral processing methods sulfide flotation and pressure oxidation in an autoclave. The ore reserves were estimated 31 December 2007 as: Probable 18.2 Mt with 5.1 g/t Au, Indicated 5.4 Mt with 3.0 g/t Au and Inferred 10.8 Mt with 3.4 g/t Au. The production capacity will be 3000 t/day.

Presidential Address Today I want to couple that prediction with a discussion on competitiveness and changing employment roles in our industry. A crude analysis of the intensity of use of metals in developed and undeveloped nations was undertaken by dividing the weight of copper, zinc, lead and aluminium used in countries by the population. In the developed countries which were basically the Western European States, USA, Canada, Australia and Japan, approximately 38 kilograms are used per annum. In the developing countries which were basically the South-East Asian country Korea, India, Pakistan and Taiwan, the usage is 5.3 kilograms. Thus, if the developing world is to catch up with the developed world, the intensity of use of metals will have to increase seven times. The usage of metals in the developed world is increasing at the rate of 1.5 per cent per annum while the rate of increase in the developing world is about 5.8 per cent. In this analysis, the population of the developed world was 850 million and the developing world 1.5 billion. Note that this analysis did not include Russia, China and most of the countries of South America and South Africa. I am sure that with time, these undeveloped countries will move into the developing category. In the long-term there is obviously great opportunity for us both in the primary and secondary processing required to meet world demand. Turning now to competitiveness and changing employment roles. I am sure that everyone here present is aware of the urgent need for Australia to improve its competitiveness. I want to try and relate unionism and industrial relations, management and tertiary education to our competitiveness. I wish to talk on these items as I see them in the past, the present and the future. So firstly unionism and industrial relations. It has been unfortunate for Australia that unionism was based on the United Kingdom craft system. It is not surprising that it was because UK has been the basis for almost ' all of our institutions and that has generally been of very great value to us. The craft system in our trade unions has lead to the demarcation problems of which we have all been well aware. This has been extremely limiting to the individual; it has limited his or her ability to broaden their scope of knowledge and far worse it has limited their ability to maximise their satisfaction at work as they have only been able to undertake part of a job, rather than being able to undertake a role in totality.

It is globally recognised that existing and emerging mining activities should be conducted in a æsustainableÆ manner for the entire life of mine. Many companies annually publish corporate sustainability reports to demonstrate their actions in accordance with international expectations. This concept of sustainable mining practices also applies to mine water management, with influences often extending beyond site operations, affecting surrounding catchments and community users. This paper explores differences in conceptual and operational terms of æsustainableÆ mine water management within the Philippines. Outcomes of a review of corporate sustainability reports, governance documentation, research programs, and stakeholder knowledge acquired through action-research workshops are presented. The paper aims to inform and support future capacity building exercises delivered by the International Mining for Development Centre (IM4DC), with outcomes tailored to government officials and policy makers of developing countries. The two methods for calibrating the parameters K and (alpha) for use in Gy’s equation for the fundamental sampling error (FSE), the duplicate sampling analysis (DSA) and the segregation fractionalised analysis (SFA) are described in detail. A case study using identical broken reef material from a Witwatersrand-type orebody is calibrated using the DSA and SFA methods and the results are compared. Classically, the form of Gy’s equation for the FSE raises the nominal size of fragments given by dN to a power of 3. Gy’s formula is a theoretical formula applicable in the case when fragments are randomly collected one by one, which is obviously never the case. This is because the fragment shape factor (f) and the granulometric factor (g) were introduced to take care of this anomaly. More recent formulae, such as those suggested by François-Bongarçon and Lyman, are empirically based formula. A later modification of Gy’s formula raises dN to the power ? (alpha), the latter term being calibrated with the coefficient K in the DSA and SFA methods. The preferred value of ? (alpha) for low-grade gold ores used by sampling practitioners in the mining industry is 1.5. A review of calibration experiments for low-grade gold ores using the DSA and SFA methods has produced values of K that vary between 70 and 170 and values of alpha in the range 0.97 to 1.30. The average value for alpha is found to be 1, rather than 3 as originally proposed in the classic form of Gy’s equation or the industry preference for 1.5. It is suggested that for low-grade gold bearing ores, the equation for the FSE should raise dN to a power of 1. Such an equation for the variance of the combined FSE plus the grouping and segregation error, now referred to as the short-term component of the quality fluctuation error (QFE1), greatly simplifies the characterisation of gold ores, which now only requires the calibration of K for a given mass and established fragment size. The implications for the heterogeneity test from the generalised equation are that provided the fragments have been screened to within a narrow size range, any particular size will return a value for K that is acceptable for use in the sampling nomogram.CITATION:Minnitt, R C A, 2017. For the past decade, demand for Australian resources has reached unprecedented levels, thanks mainly to the emerging superpowers of China and India. Meeting demand has meant miners and governments alike have ploughed billions into capital expenditure projects for logistics infrastructure such as roads, rail and ports, to support the ever expanding number of mines and mineral volumes. In more recent times, however, the effect of the global economic crisis has led to a decline in demand for Australian minerals. The downturn has seen companies lay off workers in droves, and delay or cancel expansion projects, in an attempt to preserve cash flow. Whilst the current economic cycle has hit the mining sector hard, it is an opportunity for companies to take stock of their existing operations and plan for the future. As mining companies grapple for scarce capital resources, it is inevitable that industry consolidation will ensue. This presents challenges and opportunities for both buyers and sellers alike, looking to expand operations, or sell off assets to raise cash.

Magnesite and dolomite are two salt-type minerals. The surface characteristics of these two minerals are almost the same. It is very difficult to remove dolomite from magnesite ores by flotation process. The present study was performed to develop a new collector and a better flotation scheme for magnesite from dolomite. The flotation tests show that there exists a significant difference in flotability between magnesite and dolomite when dodecyl phosphate synthesised with dodecanol, phosphorus oxychloride and other chemicals is used as collector. Sodium silicate was used as the modifier to improve flotation selectivity. It was found that sodium silicate selectively depressed magnesite at pH 4.5 - 7.5. The separation of magnesite from dolomite was achieved in a reverse flotation which resulted in a 76.1 per cent yield of magnesite with a grade of 47.3 per cent at 100 ppm dodecyl phosphate and 75 ppm sodium silicate. The flotation mechanism was investigated by characterising surface electrical properties and measuring the adsorption density of the reagents on magnesite and dolomite.

General Gold was discovered in quartz veins at Wiluna in 1896, and the first lode was discovered in 1904. Since 1896, some 2.5 million ounces of gold have been produced from the Wiluna area. The mining operations at Wiluna are 100 per cent owned by Wiluna Gold Pty Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Wiluna Mines Ltd. Oxide and sulphide gold ore is extracted by conventional open pit mining techniques, and ran-of-mine ore is processed through two separate circuits. The oxide circuit has a capacity to treat 600 0(X) tonnes per annum and the sulphide circuit has a capacity to treat 400 (XX) tonnes per annum. Additional gold is won by dump leaching sub-grade oxidised ore and by retreating of primary ore flotation tailings from previous operations. Testwork carried out in 1990 indicated the viability of leaching dumps of run-of-mine oxide ore, and in June 1991 Signet Engineering of Perth, WA, was awarded an EPCM contract to construct a nominal 2.5 million tonne dump leach facility, for a total construction estimate of 51.75 million.

Chalcopyrite samples from two different localities were leached in oxygenated mixed chloride-sulphate lixivants at elevated temperatures and atmospheric pressure. The oxidation of chalcopyrite was found to follow predominantly linear kinetics. The slope of the major region was dependent on stirring rate, oxygen flowrate and chloride concentration while only slightly dependent on the surface area of the sample leached. This region was found to predominate only at low temperatures. The oxidised chalcopyrite releases cuprous and ferric ions into solutions. Chloride ions complex these dissolved ions to effectively move the equilibrium of the leaching reaction to the right. When the level of chloride in solution was below 6 g/l, the unstable cuprous ions were found to reprecipitate with sulphur as covellite. When no chloride was present and the lixivant was a solution of sulphuric acid then ferric sulphates precipitated. The overall leaching reaction occurring in the leaching system is: CuFeS2 + 5H+ + 1.25 02 = Cu 2+ + Fe 3+ + 2S¦ + 2.5H20

The performance of the Renison tin concentrator was assessed in detail for two arrangements of the three available ball mills. With two mills used for primary grinding and the third for regrinding table tailing, the concentrator recovered 65.3 per cent of tin in the three tin concentrates produced by tabling, vanning and flotation at a calculated overall grade of 37.5 per cent tin prior to batch dressing. In the second arrangement one mill was used for primary grinding and two mills for separate regrinding of table tailing and sulphide concentrate. The metallurgical effective- ness of the change was somewhat obscured by unintended changes,i.e. an increase in the assay of the fresh feed from 1.38 per cent to 1.1+6 per cent tin and unresolved changes in the sulphide rougher flotation and tabling. However, using the results from a detailed size by size analysis of the behaviour of ore components in appropriate parts of the plant, it proved possible to show that, had the two unintended changes not occurred, up to 5 per cent

The South Mine, property of Broken Hill South Limited, is situated at Broken Hill, NSW, Australia, towards the southern end of the main lode. The leases (MLs 7 and 8) cover a length of 2400 feet along the lode outcrop and the workings extend, at this date, to a depth of 1940 feet below the collar of the original main shaft and to 825 feet below sea level. Mining operations have been continuous for about 58 years and during this period nearly 12.5 million tons of ore have been mined. The monthly tonnage extracted approximates 30 000 tons in normal times.The ore is a mixed sulphide containing galena and marmatite; the gangue minerals are principally calcite, rhodonite, quartz and garnet. A typical assay for a monthly period is 14.4 per cent Ph, 5.6 ozs Ag, and 11.6 per cent Zn. The whole of the ore is concentrated on the property by combined gravity and flotation methods. The lead and zinc concentrates produced are railed to other centres for the extraction of the contained metals.

Average annual growth in consumption of primary energy in Australia over the past ten years has been 5.5% compared to a world average of 4.1%. Over the next ten years growth rate is expected to increase to 6% per annum due largely to the rapid development in the mineral processing industry. By the end of the 1970's natural gas is expected to supply more than 9% of Australia's, primary energy market. Coal will supply 40% and petroleum products 47%. Nuclear energy will make its appearance but-will only make a small contribution in the period. Australia has adequate reserves of natural gas and coal to supply its needs in the 1970's and beyond. However the newly developed reserves of crude, while supplying 60-70% of requirements-in the initial years; will need regular and sizable additions if they are to .keep pace with the expanding consumption. For Australia to become self sufficient in the period 1970-1990 it is estimated *that new discoveries-will need to approximate. ten times the volume of recoverable reserves found in Australia to date. .

The granulites and related "dry" igneous rocks tend to be passed over during exploration for metals. Preliminary data show that high trace concentrations of Cu, Ni and other metals of economic interest are common in orthopyroxene and some of the other granulite minerals. During retrograde metamorphism of granulites, pyroxenes are converted to amphiboles or phyllosilicates, and significant quantities of metals are released and become available for incorporat- ion into new mineral phases, or may be transported elsewhere. S--rich scapolite is the normal scapolite of granulites. Its retrogression to secondary plagioclase provides much S which scavenges Cu, Ni, etc., from pyroxenes undergoing retrogression, thus producing ore-fluids. A full analysis of a scapolite with 5.10 per cent S03 is given. Beryl is unstable in granulites but the rare Be mineral taaffeite (Al4Pf (Be,Fe)O3) with 5,50 per cent BeO occurs in central Australia as a pale green Tabular mineral easily confused for chloritoid in hand-specimen. Metamorphic differentiation and mobilization of primary ore concentrations are major factors controlling their post-granulite attitude and grade.

Consolidated Rutile Limited (CRL) was one of the best performing mining stocks of the turbulent 1980s, having a very high payout of franked dividends. In contrast to some other mining groups, it was not highly involved in the speculative lead-up to the 1987 sharemarket crash. Its base was firmly laid through a succession of decisions that were taken in the period 1982-1985. These decisions and the rationale behind them are outlined in this paper. CRL began the 1980s in a highly favourable position. It had successfully pioneered the transition to high-throughput mining of the high dunes on North Stradbroke Island (NSI), commissioning its 2100 tph cutter suction dredge at the Bayside reserves in 1978 at the time of rising prices, such that it was able to pay off its modest bank loan within 18 months. The June 1980 results showed a record after-tax profit of $5.6M, from total assets fo $26.5M and sales tonnages of rutile and zircon of around 50,000 tonnes each.

The paper presents a review of research in the area of explosible coal dust with respect to safety in the underground mining environment. Research over the last several decades has concentrated on generating dust clouds in small scale laboratory explosion chambers to study flammability limits and the physical and chemical variables which affect explosion propensity. The validity of this approach is discussed and the results obtained for a range of coal types compared.

The paper commences with an overview of the industrial minerals markets, with particular reference to the characteristics that impact on the development of a successful marketing strategy. This is followed by the identification of the steps to be taken in the negotiation and execution of an industrial minerals sales contract, from identification of the appropriate product through negotiation of the contract to ongoing customer relations. An understanding of your customerÆs business is fundamental to a mutually successful long-term relationship with that customer. The paper concludes with an overview of the techniques and approaches through which such a relationship may be achieved and maintained.

In the last 100 years, statistical sampling theory for particulate materials has developed to a stage where sampling systems can be confidently designed to provide assay results of known and controlled variance for a chosen time period. The two independent sources of sampling variance, namely intrinsic and distributional heterogeneity are defined and explained quantitatively. Intrinsic heterogeneity is characterised by the sampling constant for the material and distributional heterogeneity is quantified by the process steam variogram or covariance function. The means by which sampling systems can be designed to an accuracy specification is described.

Within a short time frame of just over two years Wirralie Gold Mine has been developed from a virgin geological discovery to an operating gold mine with a mine life of six years and a production rate of 50,000 oz per annum. Construction work on the 600,000 tpa single stage crushing, two stage milling CIP plant commenced in November 1987 and was completed some seven months later at an overall cost of $A25 million. Since commissioning in May 1988 the treatment plant has exceeded design tonnage, availability and recovery. A second expansion programme in January 1989 will increase plant capacity to one million tonnes per annum with associated bullion production of 80,000 ozs per annum.

The new generation Hlsmelt« Direct Iron Ore Smelting Process is a CRA Limited technology initiative. The process development is now focussed on commercialisation. The goal is to have the first commercial vessel operating around the year 2000. The HIsmelt« Process, based on the abundantly available iron ore fines and the more readily available non-coking coals, has the potential to fundamentally change iron ore processing through the application of high intensity techniques to replace the current sinter/coke ovens/blast furnace .technologies. The process will have great potential in the rapidly growing economies of Asia where steelmaking aspirations are based around local market focussed plants. This potential can be. realised as a supplier of premium grade iron units to electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking plants or as the front end to an ore based steel mill.
