The Sapan Dalam coal deposit of Indonesia consists of ten steeply dipping seams with thicknesses varying between 0.1 and 3.5 m and split by shale, clay, silt and sandstone. The area contains four faults dipping about 75¦ with four to 85 m vertical displacements. The complex nature of the deposit coupled with limited 27 exploration drillholes at an average spacing of 200 m made it difficult to create a realistic geological model. A three-dimensional gridded seam model gave a fair representation of the deposit. Attempt to create an optimum pit using the WHITTLE 3D pit optimiser proved unsuccessful since the pit optimiser is restricted to standard regular or fixed blocks. The gridded seam model was converted to a fixed block model prior to the optimum pit design. Smoothing and pit base controlling were also introduced to obtain a smoother pit. A mining scenario produced 3.6 million tonnes of coal, 28.4 million bcm of waste and US$18.1 million revenue.

This paper presents a brief overview of current bump mechanics theories and pillar design methodologies, and relates these concepts to experiences at two mines located in a north- central Utah coalfield where different pillar designs were used to control mountain bumps. Experiences gained at the first mine demonstrated the successful implementation of a two-entry, 9.8 m (32 ft)-wide, yield-pillar design. A U.S. Bureau of Mines field study quantified the timing of chain pillar yielding and resulting load transfer from the gateroad. In-mine pillar response, although apparently sensitive to site-specific conditions, compared favorably to estimates derived using two yield- pillar design methods. A second study conducted at another mine located in the same district, but subjected to different geologic conditions, documents the unsuccessful attempts to employ progressively narrower three-entry pillar designs based on successes achieved at the first mine site. This second mine never achieved a true yield-pillar design. Use of pillar widths ranging between 9.1 m (30 ft) and 27.4 m (90 ft) always resulted in violent bumps in the tailgate pillars. The pillars were either too large to yield, or too small to support peak operational loads. Hypothetical gateroad systems were evaluated using both analytical and empirical approaches for configurations comprised of two rows of conventional pillars, and systems incorporating both yield and abutment pillars. Analysis concluded that yield pillars less than 6.1 m (20 ft) wide and abutment pillars ranging between 30.5 m (100 ft) and 39.6 m (130 ft) square would be required to achieve a stable gateroad design. However, results of a field study conducted on a two-entry, 36.6 m (120 ft)- wide abutment pillar concluded that abutment pressures from the first panel overrode the pillar, and that a still larger pillar may be required to preclude bumps in the tailgate during second panel mining. Without the benefit of a demonstrated in-mine success, it is not clear which design would ensure elimination of gateroad bumps.

Present capacity for molten iron production at Port Kembla is an average of 13 000 t/day from five blast furnaces. The most recently installed blast furnace, No.5, was commissioned in March 1972 with a design capacity of 4 500 t/day. For the first reline currently scheduled for 1977, plans are being finalized.for significant modifications and uprating of capacity. Achievement of the initial design capacity from No.5 blast furnace on a sustained basis was not realised until the third year of operation. Although the furnace is only 42% larger than No.4 blast furnace on an inner volume basis, the more stringent raw materials, operation and maintenance requirements of the larger furnace and more complex equipment have been found to be much more critical than anticipated in the planning stages. These problems have also been experienced by many other companies who have recently installed large new blast furnaces. Some of the principal problem areas are described together with measures taken to over- come the difficulties. In 2001, the Springvale Coal Mine determined a requirement for a 360 m deep vertical airway to ventilate ongoing underground longwall mining operations. The project, referred to as the Springvale No 3 Ventilation Shaft, was completed in 2003 - 2004 by blind boring a 4.25 m diameter hole from the surface to the coal seam at 360 m depth. The shaft was completed with a 3.5 m inside diameter lining made from a continuous watertight steel and concrete composite pipe. Presented from both the clientÆs and the contractorÆs perspective, the following paper describes the process of constructing a blind bored ventilation shaft for this application. Beginning with the clientÆs definition of the requirements and specifications for the shaft, the paper describes the steps followed by Springvale Coal prior to awarding the contract. Springv aleÆs process involved a thorough site investigation including procurement of geotechnical data for prospective contractors and the management of issues relating to safety, quality and the environment. The clientÆs view is followed by a description of the planning and works performed by their nominated shaft drilling contractor, Ardent Underground Pty Ltd.The contractorÆs description of the works includes the details of the blind shaft drilling and lining construction process used for this application. The design of the shaft lining installed at Springvale Coal was the first of its type to be used in Australia. The successful installation of a watertight composite shaft lining and the safety of the method, which did not require any personnel to enter the shaft or the mine, were among the positive outcomes from the project.

The Whitsunday Volcanics occupy most of the offshore islands from the Whitsunday Group, southeastwards through the Cumberland and Northumberland Groups, possibly extending to the mainland adjacent to Shoalwater Bay, a distance of 370 km. Some of the islands of this group are granitic, but preliminary Rb-Sr data indicate these to represent Permo-Triassic basement. Cretaceous volcanism is interpreted to have occurred during initial rifting prior to the continental breakup of northeastern Australia and subsequent development of the Tasman Basin.The volcanics comprise mainly lithic ignimbrites, with local development of inter-bedded surge and bedded tuff, accretionary lapilli tuffs, lithic concentration zones, and lag deposits. Isolated fluidual rhyolite and dacite domes occur. The deposits are considered subaerially emplaced. A Rb-Sr isochron age for volcanism of 110 Ma is determined from new data. The total thickness of the volcanics is unknown, but a minimum thickness of 4-5 km on Whitsunday Is. is suggested. Eruptive centres are inferred to be distributed throughout the volcanic zone. The volcanics are cut by numerous, dominantly near N-S, dykes ranging from dolerite through to rhyolite in composition.Chemically, the volcanics and dykes exhibit a continuous range of compositions from basaltic andesite, through andesite, dacite, to rhyolite, with minor more alkalic compositions. Phenocryst mineralogy in the silicic rocks is mainly plagioclase, augite, and Fe-Ti oxides, with less frequent quartz and hornblende occurrence. Sr and Nd isoptic compositions for volcanics and dykes are close to mantle values. These data are tentatively interpreted in terms of a lower crustal magma arc source separated from the mantle only a geologically short time prior to Cretaceous magmatism.

The Mt Todd Project is located 42 km northwest of Katherine in the Northern Territory. The identified mineral resource estimate for the Batman gold deposit is 66.7 million tonnes (Mt) grading 1.4 grams/tonne (g/t). Proved and Probable Ore Reserves total 42.3 Mt grading 1.5 g/t. Orebody definition and reserve estimation is based on extensive percussion and diamond drilling. Exhaustive bias analysis comparing grades produced from different drilling techniques has been undertaken. Similarly, detailed check assaying programs have been run to validate grade data produced by commercial laboratories used during the exploratory drilling phase. Significant biases were established from both studies and appropriate 'corrections' were made to drillhole databases prior to final resource and reserve estimation. 3D geostatistical modelling has been utilised for resource and reserve estimation, with specialist consultants contracted for this work. Water recovery from tailings for reuse in mineral processing is essential to operation of mines in the Atacama Desert of Chile. With annual rainfall of 5 mm, the prudent and efficient use of available water resources is a major issue for the Escondida Mine and other mines in the area. The Escondida Mine is located at an altitude of 3100 m, in a very arid, seismically active part of the Atacama Desert of northern Chile. The site is located about 170 km from the coastal city of Antofagasta. From 1994 to 2002, tailings were discharged into the Hamburgo Tailings Facility, which comprises a series of æpaddiesÆ located near the open pit and mill. Because water in the region is only obtainable from groundwater sources, the paddy system incorporated a number of design features with the aim to maximise water recovery from the tailings. As part of the recent mill expansion to 237 500 metric tonnes per day, a new tailings facility, the Laguna Seca Tailings Facility, projected to be one of the largest tailings facilities in the world, was commissioned in 2002. Extensive studies were conducted for the design of the new facility to predict water recovery from the conventional wet disposal of tailings. The predictions were calibrated against the performance of the Hamburgo Tailings Facility and subsequently re-calibrated against actual performance during the first year of operation at the Laguna Seca Tailings Facility. Initial operation of the Laguna Seca Facility was marked by a coincidental change in tailings characteristics from design, which highlighted the need for thoroughly understanding tailings behaviour during deposition, and the parameters and deposition techniques that could enhance water recovery. Systems have been put in place to manage the tailings deposition and respond to changes in key parameters such that water recovery targets can be reliably achieved. This paper describes the background studies that were conducted to evaluate evaporation and tailings behaviour, summarises the water balance and then presents some observations from the commissioning and start-up of the facility.

A conventional Bucket Wheel Excavator (BWE) system with conveyor transport, mobile tripper and spreader was commissioned at the Goonyella Mine in 1982. The system was introduced to prestrip ahead of dragline excavations and was specified to remove 7.5 million cubic metres per annum in ground somewhat harder than that inwhich bucket wheel excavators are normally operated.This machine has, since 1982, moved more than 77 millionbank cubic metres of material and has been relocated twice. Extensive trials have been undertaken including digging blasted rock.

During 2003, different plastic stemming plugs (Cats«, Stemtite«, and Taponex«) were tested in EscondidaÆs Mina Sur, to determine the effect on gas retention time when used in conjunction with drill cuttings in production shots with a blasthole diameter of 10 5/8ö. Longer retention times were expected to provide greater fragmentation and muckpile looseness. In order to determine which plug showed the greatest enhancement of stemming retention, 17 trials were carried out û in the first seven tests, only the Cats were used, in the following five tests, a combination of Cats, Taponex and Stemtite were used, and in the last three tests, only the Taponex plug was used. In the last two blasts, drill cuttings were used without stemming plugs as a benchmarking exercise. Blasts were filmed with a high-speed camera, which could record the detonation times of holes using rolls of shock tube tied to stakes at the hole collars, to act as flash indicators. The camera allowed measurement of the time between charge detonation and the commencement of stemming ejection. In order to obtain the statistical parameters of each one of the stemming plugs used in the 17 trials carried out, the Minitab software was used and a data base was created for it, corresponding to each stemming configuration with the retention time obtained from the filming. Once it was determined which stemming plug provided the greatest enhancement of stemming retention, the impact on the fragmentation was analysed using the WipFrag image analysis software to estimate the muckpile size distribution.

Digger Rocks is one of several nickel-bearing sulphide deposits localised within komaLiitic volcanics of the Forrestania Greenstone Bell within the Archaean YiIgam Block of Western Australia. Exploration and evaluation to April 1990 have delineated a resource, at a nominal cut-off grade of 0.5 per cent Ni, of 1.9 Mt at 1.1 per cent Ni within a lensoid sulphide body which strikes NW, dips 50°SW, and occurs at a depth of 30 - 110 m below surface. There has been no production from any of the Forrestania nickel deposits to-date. The deposit, comprising both disseminated and massive sulphides, has maximum dimensions of 400 m strike, 115 m vertically and 90 m true width. Generally the massive sulphides occur at the base of the disseminated sulphides, on or close to the base of the Digger Rocks dunite. The two main massive sulphide lenses have maximum dimensions of 120 m strike, 75 m vertically and 16 m true width (northern lens) and 60 m strike, 25 m vertically and 4 m true width (southern lens). The average grades of the massive and disseminated sulphides are 5.9 per cent i and 1.2 per cent i respectively. The massive sulphides generally have sharp hangingwall and fOOlwall contacts and display strong internal grade anisolropy.The massive sulphides are mainly within the supergene zone and consist of violarite, pyrite and marcasite. The disseminated sulphides are mainly within the primary zone and consist of pentlandite, pyrrholite, pyrite and minor chalcopyrite. Alteration zones, up to six in number, are complex in detail. The sulphides are capped by an average of 30 m of sub-economic, leached, siliceous, oxidised material.A genetic model for the deposit is described which places Digger Rocks in Category 2 (sulphides in large layered dunite bodies) of the latest classification of komatiitic nickel sulphide deposits in the Yilgam Block of Western Australia by Hill and Gole (1990).

Evidence is presented to show that A 0 soil samp ling is a viable prospecting method for outlining polymetallic sulphide occur- rences in areas where leached organic/ glacial soils are common. Diamond drilling of low threshold anomalies has intersected base metal mineralisation.

Gold production from The Granites - Tanami Goldfield during 1993 is expected to exceed 8 t, eclipsing that of the traditional Northern Territory gold mining districts of Tennant Creek and Pine Creek. This is the result of dedicated and successful exploration, and the consequent discovery of new orebodies such as those at Dead Bullock Soak.Following granting of access to regional exploration areas in 1988 and identification of favourable host rocks in the Schist Hills area, North Flinders Mines (NFM) began a methodical exploration program of detailed geological mapping, rock chip sampling, costeaning and various types of drilling. The first resource of 600 000 t of 3.3 g/t gold was announced in mid-1989. This has grown progressively with systematic exploration to the currently published resource inventory of 6.6 mT @ 5.4 g/t, (as at 31.12.92) contained in six separate orebodies within the Dead Bullock Soak Mineral Lease at Schist Hills.

Serious exploration for carbonate-hosted lead/zinc deposits in the Pillara district commenced in 1971 when Trend Exploration acquired exploration tenements covering stream sediment anomalies in the Limestone Billy Hills area. Shell Minerals managed the project from 1974 to 1976, and BHP Minerals Limited assumed management during 1976. Carbonate-hosted 'Mississippi-Valley- type' Pb-Zn deposits most commonly occur in Palaeozoic shallow marine carbonate complexes. At Pillara upper Devonian (Givetian/Frasnian) reef complexes are preserved on the flanks of Precambrian basement 'highs'. Within platform and atoll facies limestones sphalerite-galena- marcasite-calcite mineralisation occurs as disseminations, veins and breccia matrix, mostly associated with fractures and fault zones. Early exploration concentrated on detailed surface geochemistry and IP geophysical surveys, with geological mapping and shallow target percussion and diamond drilling. Results were discouraging and did not indicate potential for a shallow base metal resource. During 1976-77 BHP adopted a grid diamond drilling exploration technique and commenced testing an area of approximately 50 sq. km, initially using an 800 m square grid. In 1978 high grade mineralisation was intersected in an area subsequently named Blendevale. This was in the seventh diamond drill hole in the 800 m grid drilling programme, and to date more than 400 holes have been cored in the Pillara area. Detailed drilling at Blendevale has defined a number of mineralised breccia zones within an area of 2.4 km x 0.5 km, at depths of 100 m to 600 m below surface. The breccia bodies are associated with a series of north-south trending normal fault zones, forming a graben structure. Safety and stability of underground mine openings, coal pillars and water dams in the near vicinity of operating surface mines are endangered from excessive blast induced vibrations. This paper deals with the investigations carried out in four coal mines. Simultaneous measurements at equal distances from the source indicated higher level of vibration on the surface than those produced in the underground workings. The values of peak particle velocity (PPV) measured on coal pillars, body of water dam were lower than those measured on roof and junctions of the roadways. The parting of coal (3-4.5 m) between two sections vibrated with higher PPV compared to the roof of top section and floor of bottom section. In one case the influence of total charge fired in a round was significant in generation of vibration compared to the maximum charge/delay where monitoring was done vertically below the source.

The structural pattern of Victoria shows the presence of EW, NW, NE as well as the more readily recognised NNW factors commonly associated with the goldfields. ENE and WNW trends are also present. This structural lattice affects all rocks of the State. Landsat imagery shows that the EW, NW and NE structural elements are closely related spatially to the distribution of Palaeozoic igneous intrusives, Cainozoic volcanic vents as well as all historically important gold mines. It is suggested that the EW, NW and NE structural grid visible on landsat imagery is a reflection of the structure of a mid-crustal layer situated between 3.5 and 17 kms below the surface. The points of intersection of the structural elements of the mid-crustal layer offer most favourable loci for the escape of energy in the form of heat. The correlation between the distribution of igneous plutons, volcanic vents and centres of mineralisation, all reliant on high levels of energy for their formation, indicates the stability of the structures of the mid-crustal layer since early Palaeozoic times. The deep level crustal structures are believed to be, related to the release of stresses placed on the crust since early Palaeozoic times by the rotation of the Earth. A geological model that accommodates the presence of a mid-crustal layer as well as the complexities of the recognised orogenic cycles of southeast Australia is suggested. All 1 000 kg Au reef and deep lead mines fall within 1.5 and 2.5 km respectively of strong linears associated intimately with plutons and volcanic vents. Future exploration of the State is more likely to meet with success if it too is confined to the evaluation of these and similar linears. The mode of mineralisation of any one centre will depend upon the temperature, pressure and geochemical gradients operating on the migrating mineralising fluids as well as the structures in the host rocks. These factors are likely to have varied considerably from one centre of mineralisation to the next and consistency of mineral isation form and depth should not be expected along the length of any single Linear.

The economic climate of the Canadian mining industry forced an increased interest in rapid, continuous excavation techniques for hard rock formations. The potential applications and advantages of continuous mining over the present drill- blast-muck labour intensive cyclical methods are considerable. Noranda investigated an electrical technique, Plasma Blasting showing considerable promise for mining hard rock. The background of the technology and the theory of blasting rock with electricity is described. The Plasma Blasting process is based on the fast discharge of stored electrical energy into a small amount of electrolyte, suitably located in the rock. The electrical energy converts the electrolyte into high pressure plasma, which expands very quickly, thereby, generating a shock wave. This shock wave produces a stress field inside the rock, resulting in a blast similar to that made by chemical explosives, but without the deleterious fumes. Noranda is currently blasting boulders of 4-5 tonnes and is at present constructing a mobile, autonomous secondary rock breaker for underground and open pit applications. Tests on in situ hard rock formations will lead to the development of a continuous mining machine. Production rates of 500 tonnes per man-shift could be obtained with such a machine.

The extreme conservationists see the responsibility as the total preservation of the natural environment achieved by opposition to all forms of industrial development that would disturb it. The `growth-at-any-price men' consider it more important to stimulate economic growth, develop new industries, and maximize profit letting the environment take care of itself: within this wide spectrum of concern are the middle-of- the-road men, part of the vast majority, fully aware of the need to compromise to achieve a satisfactory economic growth rate whilst pre- serving to the greatest extent practicable the con- ditions upon which we depend for a balanced self-perpetuating existence. Environmental change is not new. It is the inevitable accompaniment of human activity. Oceana Gold CorporationÆs (OGC) Frasers underground (FRUG) transitioned into production in early 2008. The mine uses a relatively unique yielding pillars mining method that takes its lessons from empirical coal mining practices more so than hard rock techniques. Being a low-grade, flat-dipping resource hosted in the highly structured relatively weak Otago schist in central South Island in New Zealand, meant a number of iterations were undertaken to find the right mix of mining cost and resource extraction. Mining is on the down dip extension of the active Frasers open pit at the Macraes site (that extracts the full shear zone package at a head grade of 1.5 g/t). The challenges for the FRUG feasibility study team was to deliver an net present value (NPV) positive operation that would exist as a coproduct with OGCÆs other New Zealand operations, allowing it to make use of the high throughput low cost refractory ore treatment facility.Key factors in the successful project design were: Net capital costs kept to less than NZ$30 M by realising significant gold revenues from mine development from month four onwards. Virtually eliminating waste development by putting all key capital infrastructure in the low-grade ore adjacent to panels and maintaining the option of extracting this resource on retreat from the mine. Targeting a specific higher grade halo ore package within the entire mineralised shear zone. Applying a mining method that accepted a higher degree of dilution, ore loss and resource loss (in yielding and non-yielding pillars) to the flat-dipping resource. Thus providing an acceptable margin per tonne and resource tonnes mix, as the resource could not support a conventional low-cost caving operation, nor a higher cost room and pillar or open stope and backfill operation. 2008 has seen increasing tonnes and grade performance with a corresponding decrease in cost per tonne and cost per ounce as the mine has reached nominal capacity and is producing an operating surplus. The challenge will be to maintain and improve.

The Miocene Chichibu granitoids associated with the Chichibu skarn deposit are divided into North Body, South Body and Daikoku altered stock. Orebodies of the Chichibu skarn deposit are mainly distributed in the north-western part of the North Body and Daikoku altered stock. The North Body consists of magnetite-series granitoids ranging from tonalite to granodiorite and to monzogranite from the margins to the centre of the intrusion. The South Body consists of tonalite and granodiorite, and most of these rocks are also classified as magnetite-series granitoids. The Daikoku altered stock consists of a quartz diorite porphyry. The SiO2 contents of the granitic rocks of the North Body and South Body range from 61.6 to 70.7 wt per cent. During magmatic differentiation, Cu, As and Zn contents in fresh granitic rocks of the North Body and South Body increase with SiO2 content up to 63 wt per cent SiO2, and then progressively decrease with increasing SiO2 contents as SiO2 exceeds 65 wt per cent. Estimated pressure for the emplacement of the granitoids is about 0.5 kbars. Cathodoluminescence studies on quartz from those granitic rocks show that vapour rich two-phase fluid inclusions tend to occur in the core of quartz crystals, while halite-bearing poly-phase fluid inclusions occur in the margins of quartz crystals. The distribution of fluid inclusions suggests that fluid composition changed from low to high salinities during the growth of magmatic quartz crystals. Texture showing quartz crystals with an oval shape enclosed by radial aggregates of a mixture of fine-grained quartz, plagioclase and K-feldspar composing the groundmass of the monzogranite also suggests a pressure decrease during solidification of North Body. These findings show that high salinity fluids were present during magmatic differentiation and that Fe-Cu-Pb-Zn-Au-Ag skarn mineralisation of the Chichibu deposit was possibly associated with these high salinity fluids.
