The past decade has seen rapid expansion in the West African mineral exploration environment. This expansion has been largely driven by changes in ?Political climate ?Fiscal and legal regimes ?Exploration approaches ?West African geology. Major regional mapping and geochemical surveys by the UNDP, and the BRGM in the late 1970s and early 1980s laid the foundation for the rapid development of mineral exploration and resources during the past decade. An additional driving impetus was the discovery by native artisanal miners of many significant new gold occurrences at Libiri, Essakan, Bouda and Tirahori, during the great droughts of the late seventies and early eighties.

On scheduled commissioning and effective operation of a solvent extraction circuit relies on getting the design of both the core contact equipment and the peripheral plant right. Experience has shown that poor performance of new plants is frequently a result of ?utility? systems that do not match the requirements of the circuit, rather than the mass transfer equipment itself. Both the operator/owner and designer need to understand the ?complete requirements? for the circuit to get the balance of the design right. This paper reviews generic issues, frequently overlooked or altered during cost-cutting exercises, which have a significant impact on plant performance.

"Copper and copper alloys remain key materials for society today, with important uses found in the electrical, transportation, and construction industries. Copper demand is rising, with projections indicating that by 2025 global refined copper demand will increase to 29.5 million tons, up from the 22.4 million tons anticipated for 2015. This will require the opening up of dozens of new mines and numerous new smelters over this time period. Fortunately, Africa has significant reserves of copper, and African copper can once again play a key role in contributing to meeting the rising global demand for copper. This paper provides a brief overview of the current copper smelting operations in Southern Africa. INTRODUCTION Copper and copper alloys are essential materials for today’s modern world. The familiar green copper patina colour seen on buildings and other structures sometimes belies its true “green” characteristic – copper is essential for key emerging technologies such as wind turbines, tidal generating systems, solar energy systems, electric cars and the like. Consequently, it is believed that there will be continued growth in copper demand in the years ahead. Projections indicate that by 2025, as an example, global refined copper demand will increase to 29.5 million metric tons, up from the 22.4 million ton level anticipated for 2015. This will require dozens of new mines, and of the order of the equivalent of 10 to 12 new 0.5 million tons of copper/year-sized copper smelters (after factoring projected copper produced by electrowinning (EW))—overall, a huge undertaking. Fortunately, Africa has significant reserves of copper, and African copper can once again play a key role in supplying this rising global demand for copper. Africa’s share of global mined copper production was about 10% in 2014; however this will increase significantly in future if announced new projects eventuate. Southern Africa has an important role to play in this process. The present paper provides a brief overview of copper smelting in Southern Africa."

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. Eng (Metallurgical Engineering) degree This work was done to characterize the leaching of a uranium containing pulp processed by a South African producer to identify parameters that could be adjusted to increase the extraction of uranium in the existing circuit. Batch leach tests were used to characterize the leach properties and especially the influence of the oxidant concentration on the leaching achieved. It was found that relatively high extraction could be obtained even at room temperature by using a high liquid-to-solids ratio and that increasing the oxidant concentration significantly improved the leaching of the uranium minerals.

The authors are lead authors for chapter 4.3 ?Emissions from Ferroalloy Production? in ?2006 IPCC Guide-lines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories, Volume 3?. The paper discusses the methods to calculate and report emissions from the production of ferrosilicon, silicon-metal, ferromanganese, silicomanganese and ferrochromium alloys, as well as the basis for the methods and choice of emission factors. CO2 is the main greenhouse gas emission from ferroalloy production, accounting for about 95 % of the total CO2-equivalents. The most accurate method of determining emissions is to base the calculations on reported amounts and analyses of reducing agents and carbonate ores used in the process. If analyses are not available, typical CO2 emission factors for the different reducing agents are recommended. If neither reliable amounts nor analyses of all reducing agents are known, default generic CO2 emission factors for the type of ferroalloy multiplied with amount produced, can be used. The CO2 produced from bio-carbon (charcoal and wood chips) should be reported but will not be accounted for in national emissions. If any bio-carbon is used, the default generic CO2 emission factors cannot be applied. CH4 accounts for less than 1 % of the total emission of CO2-equivalents. Default emissions factors for CH4 are given for the production in open or semi-closed furnaces of silicon-metal and ferrosilicon. In the production of FeMn, SiMn and FeCr in closed furnaces the gas containing CO,CO2 and volatiles can be combusted in boilers and N2O may be formed. While reporting is not required, IPCC Guidelines recommend that the N2O-content in the off-gas is measured.

The ferroalloys industry has generated historically substantial solid waste. The accumulated waste causes serious problems to the environment. However, it is possible to transform the solid waste into an environment-friendly resource to serve the human being. Consequently, the construction of plants that are ?environment-friendly? and that accommodate ?recycling? has become a target of most ferroalloy producers in the world to ensure sustainable development. This paper introduces the practice of Shanxi Jiaocheng Yiwang Ferroalloys Works, the biggest manganese metal producer in China, in the development of an ?environment-friendly and recycling? process. The process includes power generation using coal gangue, waste from local coal mines; hollow bricks manufacture using slag and fly ash from the power station; cement production using slag from ferroalloy smelting; recovery of ferrous and non-ferrous elements in the dust from the furnace gas cleaning system; application of silica dust in construction and so on. The final objective of the plant is to realize zero discharge of solid waste. The profit of the ?environment-friendly and recycling? process compensates in part for the operational expense of the environment facilities.

The data set often contains one or more secondary variables. These secondary variables are usually spatially cross correlated with the primary variable. The addition of the cross-correlated information reduces the variance of the estimation error by using the cokriging method. The grade estimation results of ordinary kriging and cokriging methods are evaluated and it was found that the estimation variance of cokriging method is slightly lower than ordinary kriging. The effect of variation of block dimension on the estimation results is also investigated and it was seen that the cokriging estimation variance values also decrease as the block dimension increases.

Previous fundamental research projects have indicated the value of continuous closure measurements in deep tabular excavations for improved support design, hazard assessment and for quantifying the effect of seismicity on stope closure. This paper describes further measurements in a VCR stope to validate some of the earlier findings. Calculation of the closure ratio showed that it is a good measure to identify different ground conditions and possible hazards. This work was supported by numerical modelling results, which showed that the closure ratio is very useful in discriminating the response of different geotechnical environments. Des projets précédents de recherche fondamentale ont démontré la valeur de mesures continues de fermeture dans le cas de profondes excavations tabulaires pour une conception améliorée du soutien, de l’évaluation du danger et pour quantifier l’effet de la séismicité sur l'affaissement du toit d’un chantier d’abattage. Le présent document décrit d’autres mesures dans un chantier d’abattage VCR afin de valider certaines des conclusions précédemment formulées. Le calcul du degré d'affaissement montre qu’il y va de soi d’identifier différentes conditions de sol ainsi que les dangers possibles. Les présents travaux ont été confirmés par des résultats de modélisation numérique, lesquels ont démontré que le taux d'affaissement est très utile quant à discerner la réponse dans des environnements géotechniques différents. Vorherige Forschungsprojekte haben den Wert von kontinuierlichen Setzungsmessungen im tiefen Sudafrikanischen Strebabbau angedeutet, vor allem fur Ausbaudesign und Risikobewertung, als auch fur die quantitative Bestimmungen der seismizitatsabhangigen Setzung. Dieses Referat beschreibt weitere Messungen in einer VCR Grube um fruhere Bestimmungen zu bewerten. Dass errechnete Konvergenzverhaltniss erweiste sich als eine gute Massnahme zur bestimmung von geotechnischen Zonen und moglichen Risiken. Numerische Analyse unterstutzte die vorliegende Arbeit und deutete darauf, dass das Konvergenzverhaltniss sehr brauchbar ist um Verhaltensunterschiede der geotechnischen Zonen zu erproben

The validity of a steady state assumption made by Adams and Nicol (1986) in the modelling of the elution of gold from activated carbon was investigated. It is shown that the accuracy of the steady state approximation is dependent, not only on the magnitudes of the solution flow rate and reactor volume, but also on the lumped elution rate constant. Under the experimental conditions used by Adams and Nicol (1986) the steady state assumption was inaccurate. This could be circumvented in this instance by applying a rigorous general model which accounts for unsteady state behaviour in the solution and in the activated carbon to the experimental data.

Since the early 1990s the underground mining industry has embarked on a vigorous program of improving process and eliminating costs. A leading development in this program has been the implementation of leaky feeder radio systems as an enabling infrastructure for future automation. El-Equip Inc. has led this development with more than 175 mines implementing mine-wide radio infrastructures for voice and data. In this paper, we describe the implementation of a digital radio network which supports existing installations through to an automation infrastructure employing full digital cellular communications with mobile video roaming capabilities. We outline the evolutionary path from existing low speed data communications links through to 155 Mbps and beyond.

In the present study, the measurement of sulphur distribution ratios between the slag and metal phases encountered in the ferromanganese smelting has been carried out at 0.83 atm of partial pressure of CO at 1773 K by using classical gas-slag-metal equilibrium quenching technique as a function of composition. The distribution results were employed in calculating the sulphide capacities of SiO2-Al2O3-CaO-MgO-MnO slags in equilibrium with the Mn-Fe-Si-Csatd.-S metal phase. It is shown that the sulphur transfer from metal to slag phase increases with increasing the basicity of the slag. As expected, the sulphur distribution ratio decreases by increasing the silica content of the slag system. The effect of metal composition on the sulphide capacities of the slag as well as on the sulphur distribution ratios between the slag and metal phases have been discussed. Emprical relationships were developed to express the sulphur distribution ratios and sulphide capacities of the above slag system.

I?ve been asked to appraise the global role of coal and mining, and the best place I can think of to begin is with the World watch Institute, which purports to monitor all things global. Last fall the institute?s magazine, entitled World Watch, in a cover story called for a worldwide campaign to outlaw the use of coal before this century?s end. To my mind the article began the campaign. However, the institute had to admit that no such ban will be possible unless there is special help and heavy intervention?that is, novel policies and punitive taxes. I?ll quote directly from the magazine to underscore the point: ?without them the market will continue to deceive us into thinking coal is cheap, abundant and irreplaceable?.

In open pit mine planning and design, push back mine sequencing is widely used for long-term production planning. In push back design, a series of nested pits is generated and then considered as possible push backs with regard to the minimum push back width requirements. These nested pits are produced by parameterizing on one economic parameter like commodity price, mining or processing cost, stripping ratio, etc. The most important characterization of these push backs is that the innermost push back has the highest value per ton, the second innermost push back has the second highest value per ton, and so on. These nested pits are generated based on the best estimates of grade within a representation of the orebody in a three-dimensional matrix form. Therefore, the inherent uncertainty associated with reserve estimation (for our discussion, grade uncertainty) is not taken into account when push backs are designed. These methods do not attempt to establish which part of the deposit is likely to be worth most. This paper introduces a new algorithm that incorporates ore grade uncertainty during the pushback design process. The suggested strategy tries to seek to schedule risky blocks later in the extraction sequence. Keywords: open pit mine, push back, ore grade uncertainty.

Seven full and partial pillar extraction operations were visited in New South Wales, Australia, in the early parts of 2001. Certain factors unique to these operations have led to the general success of the safe and economic extraction of these coal pillars. Some of these factors attributable to the overall success of these operations are discussed in this paper. In particular, geotechnical mapping, specific legislation pertaining to pillar extraction, mining methods, the role of temporary supports and training are described. It is found that some of these factors have useful attributes which could be used to design a methodology for extraction of underground coal pillars in the Witbank and Highveld coalfields of South Africa.

Our purpose is to record and to explain the widely changing numbers of the huge total of black workers on the gold mines of South Africa over the century from 1896 to 1996. These men were recruited from up to twenty territories, and their contributions are examined. The major areas providing labour over this long period have been Lesotho, the former Transkei within South Africa and Mozambique. From 1989 to 1996, for instance, these three areas accounted for over sixty per cent of the total labour force (tlf). Our principal Figure 1 shows the tlf fluctuating through time to reach a peak of 480 000 in 1988. Irregular falls are also documented with the most serious in 1995 to 180 000. Based on this graph we consider the political, economic, sociological and historical reasons behind these changing employment opportunities. These have included external world-scale events such as war or depression, as well as internal changes of national economy and policy. We show the importance for numbers employed of the discovery of gold in the Orange Free State in 1946, the influence generally of the ?Winds of Change? and the firm maintenance by the State of law and order. Varying gold production costs and profitability against high tax rates, allied with increasing wages and a lack of development capital, have led in the last decade to employment falling by fifty per cent, despite an actually higher value of gold output. Finally, this analysis considers the role of the migrant labour system as it affects, and is affected by, conditions in the gold mining industry, with special reference to its less than humane consequences in the numerically dominant territories of Lesotho and Transkei.

Platinum group metals are extracted almost exclusively in South Africa from three very different zones in the Bushveld Igneous Complex, called the Plat, Merensky, and the UG-2 reefs. The Plat reef is currently being exploited only by Anglo American Platinum, whereas the Merensky reef is exploited by them, Impala Platinum, Northam, and Lonplats. The UG-2 reef, on the other hand, is also processed by these producers, but Kroondal and Barplats have operations that exclusively treat ore from this reef. At present the extraction of pgms from ores in South Africa follows the traditional route of upgrading to a concentrate in a minerals processing circuit, further upgrading to a matte in a smelter, and final upgrading and separation of the individual metals in a refinery. Thus all operations that extract pgms require a minerals processing circuit, the design and performance of which is a topic of much interest, as it is a poorly understood and not a very efficient process in relative terms, compared to the other processes. Recoveries across the minerals processing circuit of between 75 and 90% are the norm.

Turkish iron and steel sector, the base of which was established in the 1930?s, plays an important role in the industrialization and development of the country?s economy. In Türkiye this sector is the major consumer of ferroalloys. There had been a great improvement in Turkish Iron and Steel industry, especially after the 1980?sand as a result, 20.9 million tons of yearly crude steel production placed Türkiye 11th in the global steel output and 3rd in Europe. 15 % of steel produced in Türkiye is flat products, while the long products make the rest. The product composition and the general characteristics of steel production process led to an increase in ferroalloy consumption. Domestically consumed ferroalloys are especially ferromanganese, silicomanganese, and ferrosilicon. As of today, ferroalloy production capacity of Türkiye is 173,800 tons/year; 161,500 tons of which is ferrochrome with high and low carbon grades, 7,300 tons of ferrosilicochrome and the rest is ferrosilicon (5,000 tons/year). Türkiye is one of leading ferrochrome producers in the world considering the above mentioned production figures. However, this production is mainly exported since Türkiye?s stainless steel production level is modest requiring low amounts of ferrochrome. The products of iron and steel industry in Türkiye require large quantities of other ferroalloys, which make Türkiye a major importer and exporter of ferroalloys. The aim of this work is to present production, consumption, import and export quantities of: ferrochrome, ferromanganese, ferrosilicon, ferromolybdenum, ferrotungsten, ferrotitanium and ferrovanadium of Türkiye, between 1990 and 2006.

The selection of stripping dragline is a complicated problem. Several factors, such as the deposit buried conditions, the demand of mine production rate, cast blasting result, the mining/stripping operation method and parameters, etc. may comprehensively influence the optimal selection of technical specifications of the dragline. Under these circumstances, the basic thinking and procedures for dragline selection are put forward as follows. •Step 1—Initially estimate the dragline annual stripping rate and stripping bench height according to the annual coal production rate and advancing speed of mining front. Then the feasible alternatives of dragline sizes can be calculated and selected from the existing dragline series. •Step 2—A computer simulation model is developed to simulate the dragline stripping operation, to obtain a series of working face parameters, then to select the best dragline alternative. This step can be interactively iterated until the satisfactory results are obtained. •Step 3— Sensitivity analysis can be done with the systems simulation model by changing the stripping bench parameters, e.g. stripping bench height and cut width, etc. to verify and modify the selection results if necessary. The mathematical model for dragline stripping simulation has been set up. The flowchart of the model is shown. A case study for a large surface coal mine with annual production rate of 16 Mt/a is followed. The dragline bucket capacity and operation radius, stripping bench height and cut width as well as other parameters are comprehensively optimized and selected. Abstract Between the German city of Dresden and the Czech capital Prague a 4-lane highway is under con-struction. At the outskirts of Dresden it will cross the narrow and deeply eroded Weißeritz Valley by a bridge. Two twin tube tunnels under oblique angles join the bridge out of the rocky valley flanks. The different geotechnical conditions of these 4 tunnel portals, their design and construction are described within this publication. The two southern portals of the tunnel Dölzschen are situated within a vertical 65 m high former quarry slope, 25 m above the valley floor. The slope proved instable due to toppling failure and exposed serious rockfall risks. Systematic anchoring, scaling, rock bolting, netting and filling under extreme access conditions eliminated these risks. Tunnel excavation started from the slope surface without any pre-cut or conventional portal construction. The opposite northern portals of the tunnel Coschütz are situated in more gentle rock slopes. After removal of debris, excavation of the eastern tunnel started in a 30° slope striking oblique to the driving direction, without any precut, too. Because of the gentle slope inclination the cross section was not earlier completely covered by rock than 30 m behind. The western tunnel started from an optimized short, narrow and steep precut. Its flanks were stabilized by reinforced shotcrete and rock bolts. Because of the small distance between the tubes rock bolts were drilled into the cross section of the neighboring tunnel. Tunnel excavation was made by drill and blast operation, preliminary support consisted of steel arches, reinforced shotcrete and radial rock bolts. Thorough survey of the bolt’s coordinates and direction prevented them from meeting each other. Rock bolts were of the permanent type to prevent the final lining from being obliquely loaded. Systematically arrayed measuring devices checked deformations of slopes and tunnels. Zusammenfassung Der Neubau der Bundesautobahn A 17 wird Dresden und Prag miteinander verbinden. Die vierspurige Autobahn quert westlich von Dresden das enge und tief eingeschnittene Tal der Wilden Weißeritz mit einer Brücke. An beide Brückenwiderlager schließen mit schiefwinkligem Anschnitt doppelröhrige Tunnel an, deren Portale in den felsigen Talflanken liegen. Die unterschiedlichen geotechnischen Verhältnisse, die Überlegungen für einen jeweils optimalen Entwurf und der Bau der portalnahen bergmännischen Tunnelabschnitte sind Gegenstand dieser Veröffentlichung. Die Südportale des Tunnels Dölzschen liegen in einer vertikalen, 65 m hohen Felswand, 25 m über dem Talgrund. Die Felswand erwies sich als global kippgefährdet, außerdem lagen flächig verteilte erhebliche Steinschlag- und Felssturzrisiken für Bau und Betrieb vor. Die Kippgefahr wurde durch ein Systemraster aus vorgespannten Felsankern, die Steinschlag- und Felssturzrisiken durch bergsteigerisches Beräumen mit dem Brecheisen, Felsnägel und Steinschlagschutznetze eliminiert. Der Tunnelausbruch begann von einer Vorschüttung direkt in der Felswand ohne Voreinschnitt im Schutz einer kurzen Luftbogenstrecke. Die gegenüberliegenden Nordportale des Tunnels Coschütz befinden sich in wesentlich flacheren Hängen. Nach dem Aushub einer mehrere Meter dicken Abraumhalde begann der Tunnelausbruch der östlichen Röhre asymmetrisch mit einer Luftbogenstrecke in einer spitzwinklig zur Vortriebsrichtung streichenden, 30° mit dem Vortrieb steigenden Felsfläche, ebenfalls ohne Voreinschnitt. Wegen der flachen Neigung der Böschung war der Tunnelquerschnitt erst nach 30 m vollständig überdeckt. Für den Vortrieb der westlichen Tunnelröhre mussten erst eine zwischen den Röhren vorhandene Felsnase teilweise abgetragen, die westlich anschließende zurückspringende Felswand vertikal gestellt und gesichert und Felsaushub in der rechten Flanke getätigt werden. Der damit entstehende Voreinschnitt wurde so kurz wie möglich und ohne seitliche Arbeitsräume ausgeführt. Die Sicherung der Böschungen erfolgte mit bewehrtem Spritzbeton und Felsnägeln. Wegen des geringen Abstands der beiden Röhren wurden die unteren Lagen der radialen Ausbruchsicherung durchgeankert. Der Tunnelvortrieb begann im Schutz eines geankerten Portalkranzes und ebenfalls von einer Luftbogenstrecke aus.
