In the investigation described here, it was found that the main effect of temperature is on the rate of flotation, and that adsorption of the reagent is not rate controlling. Above 10°C, the flotation rate of pyrite and gangue increases almost exponentially with a rise in temperature. Below that temperature, the flotation rate of pyrite shows a sudden marked decrease, that of gangue increases, and the sulphur grades are significantly poorer. In the flotation of pyrite, the mass transfer of the pyrite from the pulp to the troth is thought to be the ratecontrolling step, whereas the flotation of gangue is controlled by the combined effect of the stability and velocity of the froth and the viscosity of the elutriating medium. The latter is probably the controlling effect at temperatures below 10°C. Little difference was noted in the recoveries (provided no time limit was set) with changes in temperature; hence adequate recoveries can be obtained at Iow temperatures by the introduction of longer residence times for the pulp. The adverse effects of Iow temperatures on grades can be overcome only by additional cleaning or by heating of the pulp.

A theoretical analysis of a two-region solid-liquid flow system in horizontal pipes is presented, which considers a stationary bed of drill cuttings as a porous medium (-region) below of a two-phase dispersed flow (-region).The method of volume averaging was applied in this study to derive a rigorous mathematical model in which each variable is precisely defined. This model includes the volume-averaged transport equations for both the two-phase dispersed flow and the porous medium regions and terms from a macroscopic forces balance. The solution of the two-region model allowed evaluation of the behaviour of pressure gradient as a function of velocity, total volume fraction of cuttings and the relationship of the height of the stationary bed and pipe diameter. The solution is based on a backward finite difference explicit scheme. The simulated physical system is a pipe of 4.135 m in horizontal length and 0.0508 m in diameter. A one-dimensional, mesh-centred grid, consisting of 100 nodes, is used. The numerical results were compared with experimental data on slurry flows and a good agreement was found. Namakwa Sands, an Anglo Operations Limited subsidiary, is a world-class producer of heavy minerals. A layer of duricrust imposes a pseudo-stratigraphy to the primary deposit and has sterilized part of the generally unconsolidated ore in the open cast mine. The bulk of this ore cannot be treated by the present infrastructure, which employs conventional mineral separation technology. The mineralogy of the cementing agent consists of magnesium and calcium silicates and minor carbonates in addition to clay minerals such as sepiolite and those from the smectite group. Although the duricrust ore is friable and can be easily crushed, the significant clay-sized slime fraction produced, in particular the highly sorptive sepiolite, adversely affects mineral separation. The geometallurgical challenge is to cost-effectively remove the slimes from the ore before it is delivered to the concentrator.

A method, based on the macroscopic population balance equation allowing the dynamic simulation of a multistage adsorption plant given an arbitrary rate expression, is described. The partial differential equations resulting from this method are simplified using the method of characteristics. The simplified equations can then be solved using standard ODE integration techniques. The procedure is illustrated by means of data typical of a CIP application. Requirements for data structures which allow the incorporation of the carbon-in-pulp (CIP) model (and other unit models) into a general metallurgical simulator are described. Based on these considerations, it is concluded that more generality in the description of distributed quantities such as loading and particle size is provided by the use of mass density at fixed class boundaries, rather than discrete masses within fixed classes as has hitherto been used by ore-dressing simulators.

The paper briefly outlines the history of the successful development of vegetating techniques for mine-residue deposits. It seeks to place on record the major roles played by M.J. Mrost, who initiated and systematically developed the concept, and W.H. Cook, who continued the trials and successfully directed a stupendous large-scale project. The vegetating techniques currently practised are outlined, and it is concluded that vegetating is still the only surface-stabilizing technique of any significance that is employed throughout the world.

"Successful development of projects or life-of-mine strategies requires an understanding of the relative sensitivity of value drivers such as grade, tonnage, energy costs, direct operational costs, and recoveries. For example, the results could vary significantly depending on the grade strategy, given a specific orebody amenable to open pitting.Pit optimization is a very powerful tool widely used in the industry to determine the pit shell with the most attractive value potential. Based on the input parameters utilized, the pit optimization process determines the stripping ratio, mineable reserves, and pit shape, and effectively calculates a cut-off grade, assumed to be the optimal cut-off grade.Once the initial pit optimization process is completed, the need may arise to align the optimization results with the company strategy by further optimizing other criteria, such as maximizing short-term cash flow. This paper describes and discusses the selection of an alternative cutoff grade as a strategic intervention. It involves changing the cut-off grade, effectively increasing the head grade to gain a strategic advantage aligned with the company strategy, with a clear understanding of the financial value impact. With this knowledge, it is clear that pitoptimization establishes the basis for future analysis and refinement.IntroductionIt is common for companies to select the optimal pit shell defining the mineral reserve without much further consideration. However, companies may consider various strategies to optimize the long-term value of the project or to optimize the short-term cash flow. Analysis of the entire life-of-mine value estimation process shows that the selection of a cut-off grade and other parameters should be based on careful analysis. Determining the optimal cut-off grade of ore at a different period during the life of mine to maximize the value is often one of the most difficult challenges for a company.A cut-off grade is the lowest grade that mining activities will target. As a result the average mining grade, which drives the value of a project, will always be higher than the cutoff grade applied.According to Bascetin and Nieto (2007) cut-off optimization is still not widely practised. Cut-off grade optimization is an effort to maximize the value of a project by understanding the capacity constraints in the mine, mill, and the market. At any point during the life of mine, any or all of the limitations on tonnage mined, tonnage milled, and product sold may be constraining the system. To ensure cut-off optimization is done correctly, the capacity constraints must be independent of the cut-off grade."

An advanced real-time monitoring system called the tapblock diagnostic system (TDS) has been developed. The purpose of the TDS is to help furnace operators manage the safe operation and economical maintenance of furnace tapblocks. This system is an evolution of the current practice of using historical records and operator interpretation to assess the ?health? of a tapblock. The main parameters affecting tapblock health are heat removal capacity and refractory wear, and these are currently difficult to assess in situ except in a global way. By using monitored and operating data together with predictive numerical modelling and multivariate statistical methods, real-time tapblock performance is assessed relative to expected performance. A state indicator in the form of a green, yellow, and red light is used by furnace operators to monitor the tapblock performance and health status during operation. Access to historical operating data and the provision of diagnostic functions allow for probable health degradation events to be deeply investigated. A recent opportunity to evaluate the actual performance of a first generation TDS installed in the KIVCET furnace at Teck Cominco?s Trail Operations showed that a reasonable estimate of tapblock health was made. However, the evaluation also found that some areas of refractory wear were missed, and a new mechanism affecting refractory wear was discovered that was not previously known. This has reinforced the belief that there is a need to develop improved methods of monitoring so that data used to define the health of the tapblock is more comprehensive and accurate.

Most of the cyanide lost in carbon-In-pulp plants is due to the reaction of cyanide with base metals and sulphides during leaching. Some cyanide is also lost in the adsorption tanks as a result of oxidative and adsorption reactions with the activated carbon. The high rates of cyanide loss in the elution and electrowinning stages are atributable to hydrolytic decomposition and anodic oxidation, respectively. However, the relative amount of cyanide lost during these two stages is small for a given amount of ore treated.

A review of some aspects of shaft design by G. W. HOLL, Pr. Eng., Associate of the Mine Managers Association of South Africa (Fellow)- and E. G. FAIRON, Pr. Eng., F.S.A.I.E.E., M.I. Cert. M.E.E., M.I.Mech. E., (Visitor) The reasons for the choice of vertical shafts in preference to inclined shafts of comparable capacity are set out, and the conclusion that the former are superior in virtually all circumstances is substantiated. The shapes of vertical shafts sunk during the past sixty years are recorded, and the shapes of those sunk during the past decade are analysed. From this analysis it is clear that circular and elliptical (and quasi-elliptical) shafts are the shafts of the future and that the rectangular shape will conceivably become obsolete. The determination of the size of shaft is discussed and it is forecast that shafts of a diameter of 13 metres and over will probably be sunk without difficulty in the years to come. The depth of the shaft is determined intrinsically by the Mines and Works Regulations applicable to factors pf safety of winding ropes and the design of the winding system. The Blair winder is the most suitable winder for hoisting rock, men, and material from a depth of, say, 3000 metres on an economic basis. Tertiary shafts will, therefore, be unnecessary in future deep-level mining projects at the limit of depth now envisaged. A few other factors relating to shaft design are described.

(Member) The iron charged to the basic oxygen furnace at the steel plant of Highveld Steel and Vanadium Corporation has a relatively high sulphur content. Considerable emphasis is therefore placed on the reactivity of the lime. An investigation of the lime used at the steel plant showed that its reactivity had deteriorated considerably both during transport from the supplier (Northern Lime Company) and during storage and handling at the steel plant. The deterioration on the steel plant is the more severe, and is due to hydration and carbonation. Rapid deterioration is a characteristic of highly reactive lime when exposed to the atmosphere. Plant tests showed that the desulphurization efficiency decreases with a decrease in the reactivity of the lime. The addition of slag rich in manganous oxide to the furnace considerably improved the efficiency of desulphurization that can be achieved with limes of lower reactivity and with lime that has deteriorated. A decrease in particle size of lime of lower reactivity greatly increased the desulphurization efficiency. Less lime of higher reactivity is required for the same degree of desulphurization to be achieved. Lime of higher reactivity gives rise to slags with lower ferrous oxide contents and hence the steel yield is increased.

Past work on the ignition of methane-air mixtures by coal-cutting picks is reviewed, with special reference to the factors that contribute to ignitions and ways of reducing them. The main conclusions obtained from this review are outlined for the following aspects: mechanisms of ignition, methane concentrations, and the roles of rock types, cutting parameters, cutting tools, and water. However, many of these factors have been investigated on a qualitative, rather than on a quantitative, basis. A considerable amount of effort over a long period has been expended in this area of research. It is shown that a number of the factors influencing ignitions by machine picks have been researched adequately, but that there is still work to be done. Research is continuing in this area, being concentrated primarily upon the ignition potential of the coal-cutting pick.

Hydrogen peroxide is gaining acceptance as a reagent for the treatment of mining effluents containing cyanide. In this paper some of the chemical and environmental aspects of treatment with hydrogen peroxide are discussed, and one way of improving the economics of the process is described. This is known as selective detoxification, which involves the oxidation of the less stable (cyanide) complexes while not affecting the more stable complexes, which contribute very little to the concentration of free cyanide or to the toxicity of the treated water.

Tests aimed at obtaining complete stress-strain characteristics of large coal specimens with high width-to-height ratios are described. A formula for the relationship between strength and width-to-height ratios of coal pillars is proposed, and the influence of width to- height ratios on the deformation characteristics of pillars is discussed.

Automation of mining operations is pushed by cost pressure and cyclical product prices. However, until now the different types of equipment were not able to communicate electronically with each other or with central computer systems. Therefore, the International Rock Excavation Data Exchange Standard (IREDES) was launched by major players in the industry. The task of this initiative is to define a ‘common electronic language’ for easy and standardized data exchange. As in other industries, this standard is expected to have significant impact on the use of automation in general and on the markets for third party components and software. The standard’s technical architecture is open and flexible for future applications. It consists of an ‘horizontal’ structure defining ‘Application Profiles’ for different types of data sets. An additional ‘vertical’ structure (‘Equipment Profiles’) implements equipment dependent definitions for each of the applicable Application Profiles. First profiles will be available for Drill Rigs. The standard bases on the XML language thus enabling easy data exchange with commercial databases. IREDES data sets may use storage media as well as networking infrastructures for information exchange. The IREDES work is carried out by the initiative members working jointly together in the IREDES work groups. It is open for participation of all interested organizations. First prototyping applications are expected to start during 2001, the first products may be available in the following year. Designing and optimising flotation circuits are critical for mineral beneficiation plants, and therefore several procedures have been published. The modelling of flotation circuits with the objective of design and optimisation is problematic in that different approaches are used for the modelling of flotation units and regrinding units. Usually, regrinding models are based on particles characterised by their size, while flotation models are based on species characterised by fast and slow classes. The relationship between particle size and liberation can be used, but it requires laboratory studies that are time-consuming and costs are high. It is therefore not surprising that few studies on flotation circuit design and optimisation include flotation units and regrinding units simultaneously. In this paper, it is proposed to model the regrinding stage using species characterised by fine-slow, medium-fast, and coarse-slow flotation species. In deep, the regrinding model is derived from a population balance approach based on flotation species. The fraction of these species at the feed and product of the grinding unit is determined by flotation tests. Then, based on these data, the model parameters can be determined by a regression estimation procedure. A local ore was used to validate the model. The paper addresses pipe flows of aqueous medium-sand slurries at velocities lower than the deposition-limit velocity. Laboratory test results including measurements of particle concentration distributions are used in order to describe a flow with a (pseudo-) linear concentration gradient above a stationary bed. Particle dispersion within the flow is evaluated and a stratification-ratio equation is formulated, estimating a portion of contact load in the flow. The formula is incorporated in the proposed predictive model for the hydraulic gradient for a medium-sand flow above a stationary bed.

The history of development of analytical techniques for the determination of elastic behaviour around tabular excavations, is examined briefly. The design of a completely digital system, which appears to afford considerable improvements in speed, accuracy and versatility compared with existing analogue methods, is described in detail. The practical application of this system is illustrated by means of an actual underground problem. The results are presented, not in the form of specific solutions to the mine's problems, but as indications of the versatility and scope of the new method.

"The objective of any mining company is to sustainably maximize the net present value (NPV) throughout the life-of-mine (LOM). The expected NPV over the LOM is calculated based on a mine plan, yet the actual value realized by the mining company depends greatly on the level of intertemporal execution against the mine plan. Consequently, a major key performance indicator (KPI) that is often overlooked in open pit mining, due to a greater focus on temporal KPIs, is the degree of spatial compliance to the mine plan. Such focus sometimes leads to short-term actions being detrimental to long-term plans. In this paper we describe the development and implementation of a spatial mine-to-plan compliance reconciliation approach for an open pit mine. Application to a case study open pit iron ore mine in South Africa indicated a significant improvement in the spatial mine-to-plan compliance, from 69% to 94% over a three-year period from 2014 to 2016. These results indicate that implementation of the proposed spatial mine-to-plan compliance reconciliation approach can contribute positively to improving the level of spatial execution and assists in improving the alignment between short-term, medium-term, and LOM plans.IntroductionThe objective of any mining company is to maximize the net present value (NPV) throughout the life of mine (LOM). Tati Nickel is currently operating a hydrometallurgical demonstration plant in Botswana, using the Activox® process developed by LionOre Technology to produce nickel cathode and a cobalt salt from a sulphide concentrate. Cobalt is extracted using Cyanex 272. This reagent also extracts all the iron, aluminium, copper, zinc, and manganese from the nickel stream. Versatic 10 carboxylic acid is then used as extractant to recover nickel from the stream, separating it from calcium and magnesium, and upgrading it to provide a suitable advance electrolyte for nickel electrowinning. However, the selectivity of Versatic 10 for nickel over calcium is limited, and gypsum formation in the extraction circuit is a problem when attempts are made to maximize the recovery of nickel. Mintek has developed a synergistic system with Versatic 10 for improved separation of nickel from calcium and magnesium. Laboratory testwork was conducted on the raffinate of the cobalt solvent extraction circuit to optimize the Versatic 10/Nicksyn? (Mintek synergist) system to be employed. Extraction and stripping parameters suitable for this stream were optimized in the laboratory and then applied on the demonstration plant. A commercial batch (0.5 tons) of Nicksyn? reagent was produced for the demonstration plant. The laboratory testwork results and the demonstration plant performance are discussed in detail in this paper.
