The placer mining industry of the West Coast region of the South Island is based largely around the production of alluvial gold, although other valuable minerals are also present. Since the first major discoveries in 1864-65, reported gold production has totalled around 264 t (8.5 Moz). During the past 10 years, annual production has totalled around 1460 kg (47,000 oz). It is anticipated that gold production over the next three years will continue at a level of 1400-1800 kg.   Annual gold production peaked during 1866 at approximately 17,170 kg (550,000 oz) and has not exceeded 100,000 oz since 1885. This reflects the ease with which gold was won from shallow, rich deposits that were present at many localities. Subsequently, there has been a general decline in the availability of this type of deposit, a trend that will continue in the future. This paper outlines the present state of placer mining in the West Coast region, gives some historical background to the industry and briefly predicts future trends.

Prospectivity, the relative value of gold, investor confidence, general economic stability and legislation driven by public attitudes are seen as the major influences on the gold mining industry in New Zealand. Since the 1860s the gold mining industry in New Zealand has been subject to the complex interaction of these influences resulting in three successive boom and bust periods. The booms are related to periods of greatest potential economic growth. The busts are more strongly related to downturns in the economy and falling gold price. The influences may be expressed as trends over time. The role of gold has changed from being a currency base to that of a traded commodity. This change has caused price instability and rapid fluctuations in its value. Increased competing land uses, shifting public attitudes and legislative changes have added to the instability of the industry. Reaction against change is to be expected from the companies until new legislation is seen to be functioning efficiently. Other trends show that there has been a tendency towards reduced exploration and consolidation of active gold mining projects. The future consequences of this are likely to be felt both regionally and nationally as there will be no new discoveries to fill production voids which will develop as currently producing mines close. The review of New Zealand's resource use statutes is nearly complete. A period of legislative stability can now be expected. There are some positive signs that consents will be obtained much more quickly than under previous legislation, particularly by those companies which develop the skills to work with the system. The new regime is about consideration of impacts rather than specific activities. This, together with excellent prospectivity, bodes well for the identification of mineral resources in New Zealand.

This paper presents the results of a test program evaluating the impact of sample mass on the precision of Stage 1 gravity recoverable gold (GRG) test results. Four ore types ranging from low to high GRG contents were the focus of testing. A method to predict the influence of sample mass on the confidence limits of the Stage 1 GRG test result is demonstrated. The results suggest that although small samples tend to overestimate Stage 1 GRG in samples with low gravity gold values due to higher mass pull to concentrate, such samples can give acceptable estimates of the Stage 1 GRG content with focussed sample treatment protocols.CITATION:Giblett, A and Napier-Munn, T J, 2015. Frequently materials handling operations are compromised by transfer chute problems ranging from high wear rates, blockages and ineffective loading of the downstream conveyor. This paper will present the design flow implemented to overcome problems in two case studies utilising discrete element modelling incorporating material characterisation.Material testing is relevant in achieving a valid discrete element method (DEM) simulation model and subsequently a valuable design tool for transfer chute assessment and design. It is well recognised that in the current growth and demand for mineral resources, leading to ever increasing conveyor capacities associated with export terminals and mineral processing facilities that transfer chutes are a key focus point. The successful performance of the transfer chute is also dependent on operating with a ærobust rangeÆ of material flowability and handling characteristics. The Patawarta Diapir, located in the northern Flinders Ranges (South Australia), has intruded into late Proterozoic Wilpena Group sedimentary rocks. The diapir contains disrupted blocks of a wide variety of rock types, most of which can be correlated with the Lower Callanna Beds of Willouran age, in a matrix of predominantly carbonate and siltstone breccia. Mafic rocks in the diapir appear to predate intrusion of the diapir. As with many other diapirs in the Flinders Ranges, copper mineralization is present in the diapir and occurs as narrow veins consisting essentially of carbonate with chalcopyrite and pyrite that formed after diapiric intrusion.Fluid inclusion studies demonstrate that the mineralizing fluid was a Na-Ca-K-Cl brine; probably derived by expulsion of interstitial water following emplacement of the diapir, with dissolution of evaporites within the Callanna Beds sediments and enrichment in copper by reaction with these sediments and associated basic igneous rocks. Mineral assemblages combined with fluid inclusion and geochemical data indicate a possible environment of vein formation of T ÿ 165°C, pH ÿ 4.3 ± 0.9 and log fO2 ÿ -47.3 ± 0.5. Sulphur isotope analyses indicate d34Sfluid ÿ 10 per mil, suggesting evaporites in the Proterozoic sediments as the major source of the sulphur but with some additional sulphur from an igneous source, possibly leached from the malic rocks of the diapir.

THE Broken Hill mining field, approximately 31 miles in length, is at present being exploited by seven companies, viz. : North Broken Hill Limited, Junction North Broken Hill No Liability, Broken Hill Proprietary Block 14 Company, Broken Hill ProprietaryCompany Limited, Sulphide Corporation Limited, Broken Hill South Limited, and Zinc Corporation Limited.The variation in size and shape of the ore-bodies in the mines of these companies, together with the many alterations in pitch and dip, necessitates differences in methods of mining, each company working out its problem in its own particular way.In the matter of chute construction for the handling of the ore broken in the stopes, each mine belonging to the above companies has adopted a style particularly its own, though it may be said that one or two of the types approximate very closely to each other, slight minor differences only being noticed in the design. It is the purpose of this paper to give a brief description of the principal types of chutes now in use in th,e various mines on the field, and in doing so they may roughly be classified into three groups, viz:1. Bulk Chutes, 2. Circular Chutes, 3. Square-set Chutes.The Bulk type of chute is used in the North and British mines of the North Broken Hill Limited, the Central and Junction mines of the Sulphide Corporation, the South Blocks mine of the Zinc Corporation, and the Block 14 mine.The Circular type of chute is used by the Broken Hill South mine and the South Blocks mine.The Square-set chute is used in the Proprietary mine, the Junction North mine, and occasionally in other mines where the square set method of mining is a necessity, and more particularly as mullock passes.

Long-hole directional drilling for in-seam exploration was introduced to New Zealand at Huntly West Mine in 1989. Following the success of this initial drilling program the Coal Corporation of New Zealand (CoaICorp) purchased its own drilling equipment and proceeded to adopt the technique with in-housetraining. From July 1991 to September 1992 a total of 15 455 metres was drilled at Huntly West Mine. During this period several modifications were made to the drilling technology to suit the ground conditions. The resulting interpretations of the drill information enabled reliable seam definition to be incorporated in mine planning. Since January 1993, the technique has been transferred to the Huntly East Mine to assist with seam definition for the planned development westwards under the Waikato River. The benefits of this drilling technique to coal mine planning are now well documented in Australia and New Zealand as well as other overseas countries. The possibilities of adapting the long-hole drilling technique to hard rock applications has been illustrated recently with successful cross-measure drilling at Huntly East Mine.

A Robust Chemically Enhanced Electrostatic Separation Technology Physical separation processes such as gravity, magnetic and electrostatic separations are extensively used in heavy minerals separations. Electrostatic (aka High-Tension) separation facilitated by the conductivity differences, in particular, is used for separating rutile from zircon. Although electrostatic separation is effective, it is not efficient. It suffers from separation efficacy issues owing to sensitive variables such as humidity, surface contamination, particle sizes and the temperature of the feed and other equipment parameters. The variations in the process conditions especially with humidity, temperature of the feed and the mineralogy and surface impurities can cause significant reduction in the separation resulting in production rate losses and product quality issues. Cytec Industries has developed chemical enhancement technologies for electrostatic separation for rutile -zircon separation from the heavy minerals. The major advantage of our technology is its higher separation efficacy in the first pass, substantial energy savings and most importantly its ability to do separation at room temperatures. The bolt-on nature to the existing electrostatic also an added feature that reduces the capital expenditure significantly. The separation efficiency between rutile and zircon was increased as much as 8 - 11 per cent compared to control. It is possible to extend the chemical enhancer technology to problematic feeds and other mineral systems that are not easily amenable to conventional electrostatic separation.

OK Tedi Mining Ltd. (OTML) is in the process of optimising the concentrator performance. One aspect that has been recently implemented is an upgrade of the existing expert control philosophy on the grinding circuit and this will be the topic of this paper. Ore grinding in SAG mills is a multi-input multi-output (MIMO) process subject to several disturbances, most typical being quick acting disturbances such as changes in ore characteristics like hardness and particle size and slow acting disturbances such as ball charge variations and liner wear. The OTML SAG mills treat ore from diverse ore bodies and receive fresh feed subject to large changes in particle size. These circumstances make these mills particularly challenging to control. In this paper, a comparative analysis is presented between the performance of the OTML SAG mill #2 before and after the commissioning of a hybrid control strategy. The strategy uses Expert Knowledge combined with advanced disturbance rejection to reduce the variability of the main process variables, especially pressure and power. It further optimises the overall operation by driving the SAG mill #2 against process constraints (e.g. high power, high motor temperature and high scats recycle rate) and maintaining the operation at or near this point. This strategy is implemented by a combination of the manipulated variables (i.e. fresh feed tonnage and % solids) at any given time.The paper will present trends and a statistical analysis of the comparative results of the mill operation over a period of months, showing a 30% reduction in mill power / pressure variability and a 12% improvement in average power drawn. An increase in throughput was also observed, but cannot be conclusively attributed to the change in mill control due to other changes that were made to the SAG mill #2 during the period of comparison. An additional benefit includes better acceptance from the operators with improved consistency of the SAG mill #2 operation across shifts.The paper will also discuss further improvements envisaged in the continued optimisation of the grinding control circuit.CITATION:Savage, C, Rodriguez, R and Metzner, G, 2013. There is a lack of information concerning the movements of water on the continental shelf, particularly with regard to data obtained regularly over significant periods of time. The Horace Lamb Centre for Oceanographic Research has recently deployed data acquisition systems on the sea bed off the coast of South Australia to record tides, swell, and ocean temperatures. Some of these early records are described. The swell data are pertinent to future offshore operations with drilling rigs, barges, and other equipment, while the temperature variations give evidence of significant bottom currents, apart from those due to swell.

A table concentrate obtained experimentally by the New Occidental Gold Mines N.L. has unusual interest on account of the presence in it of abundant coated or "black" gold. The concentrate was obtained from ore from the New Cobar mine, Cobar, New South Wales, by feeding the oversize product from a "Dorr Bowl classifier to a Card table.Its assay value was 129 oz. of gold and 52 oz. of silver per ton, yet practically no free gold could be seen on panning.When, however, the concentrate was digested in hydrochloric acid fine rusty gold could be obtained by panning.The following chemical analysis was carried out by the mining company on a similar sample of concentrate.

The commonly traded base metals concentrates of copper, lead, tin and zinc are sold by miners to custom smelters using contracts whose terms were generally established at the beginning of the 20th century or even earlier. Technical clauses in these concentrates for items such as payable metals and penalty elements do not reflect current realities of extractive metallurgical technologies and hygiene/environmental issues.It is an axiom that the miners and smelters have a symbiotic relationship. While the existing antique and arcane commercial arrangements serve the purpose of transferring money from the buyer to the seller, they are not likely to result in the industry achieving better overall technical and economic outcomes. By examining the cases for copper concentrates and zinc concentrates in particular, it will be shown that the practical application of these antiquated technical clauses does not drive the miners to produce the better quality concentrates that should be desired by the smelters. This is despite development of mineral beneficiation and hydrometallurgical technologies that would allow the miners to make better products.The adage that any extractive metallurgical problem in the smelter is cheaper to solve in the concentrator still generally holds.While nickel concentrates are only touched on lightly in this discussion because sales terms are more opaque than those for the other base metals, it is expected that the same conclusions will apply.CITATION:Munro, P D and Munro, S E, 2015. The Gippsland Basin in south-eastern Australia has an area of approximately 46 000 sq km. It is one of the world's major coal and petroleum bearing basins, with most of the former occurring in the smaller one fifth on-shore part. The stratigraphy, structure and economic resources of the Tertiary sedimentary pile is now well known through extensive drilling for coal and petroleum. In contrast, the older Cretaceous sequences through their lesser economic importance are relatively less explored. The sedimentational history of the Gippsland Basin has largely followed along similar lines of development to the many other southern Australian basins since the Cretaceous break-up of Gondwanaland. However, the scale of accumulation of coal and hydrocarbon source rocks is unprecedented and differentiates this basin, for reasons less well understood, from the others. Large scale open cut brown coal mining since the late-1920s has been carried out in the western extremities of the basin, while vigorous extraction of some two thirds of Australian petroleum products taken place in the offshore part. Brown coal seam thicknesses and economically winnable reserves are huge and outrank most other brown coal basins of the world. Development of the resource currently meets the need for electricity generation throughout the State of Victoria, but other future developments such as conversion to oil, being investigated.

A rotating magnetic field can be produced in a magnetic separator by using a magnet rotor fitted with alternate north-south magnetic poles, similar to the rotors currently used in modern eddy current separators. Rotation of the magnetic field causes ferromagnetic particles to rotate during magnetic separation. The particle rotation can then be used simply to remove entrapment during a conventional attraction magnetic separation (RMF lift separation), or it can be used to roll particles away from non-rotating particles, and to move them out of the separator under their own rotation (RMF rotation separation). RMF (rotating magnetic field) separation is a separation for ferromagnetic particles. These particles have a very ordered magnetism that is locked into directions of easy magnetisation in the crystal. As a result, if the external field rotates, the particles attempt to rotate with it. RMF separation uses this fact to rotate the ferromagnetic particles in a rotating field. In contrast, paramagnetic particles have a magnetism that can point in any direction with almost equal ease, and these will not rotate in a rotating field. By making use of this difference in magnetic properties, RMF rotation separation can separate ferromagnetic particles from paramagnetic, even when the particles have similar susceptibilities. Some particles such as both chrome spinel and ilmenite can contain ferromagnetic regions within a paramagnetic matrix. These ferromagnetic regions can vary from very small regions dispersed throughout the crystal, through thin lamellae, to larger more bulky regions. Although most natural ilmenite is ferromagnetic and generally has a higher magnetic susceptibility than paramagnetic chrome spinel, the susceptibility ranges for the two minerals overlap considerably (Allen, 2000a) due to the presence of these ferromagnetic elements, frequently making the conventional magnetic separation of these two minerals impractical. It is known that roasting a mixture of ilmenite and chrome spinel particles increases the magnetic susceptibility of the ilmenite while leaving the spinel susceptibility substantially unchanged. This makes the use of conventional (susceptibility attraction) magnetic separation more practical for the separation of these two minerals. However, very little is known about the effects of roasting on the response of ilmenite and spinel particles to a rotating magnetic field. For example, although the optimal ilmenite roasting conditions for conventional magnetic separation are quite well established such conditions may or may not be optimal for RMF rotation separation. Low intensity conventional magnetic separation on the basis of magnetic susceptibility can be made more accurate if it is carried out in a rotating field, because the rapid spinning of the separating particles prevents the formation of magnetic flocs, and reduces entrapment and entrainment. Medium intensity RMF rotation-only separation (no attraction component) has the ability to separate rotating (ferromagnetic) from non-rotating (paramagnetic) particles, irrespective of their relative magnetic susceptibilities. RMF rotation separation is of particular interest in this case because ilmenite particles generally rotate much better than the mainly paramagnetic chrome spinel particles, and roasting could enhance this difference further. Further information on the use of RMF to separate minerals can be found in Allen (2000a; b and c). The aim of this series of tests on a number of Australian ilmenites was to compare some different oxidising and reducing roast methods and to establish whether the use of RMF rotation separation improves the chrome spinel rejection.

Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and other near infrared (NIR) tools have been used in the bauxite industry for many years. Infrared spectroscopy exploits the differences in chemical composition and lattice structure to produce a characteristic response. Spectral devices, such as those from ASD Inc and the HyLoggerTM, provide qualitative mineralogical data targeted towards hydrated minerals detected in the near and short wave infrared region. The FTIR spectrum extends into the mid and thermal infrared range and can therefore respond to the presence of silicates and oxides, in addition to hydrates and carbonates.The key to successful utilisation of infrared spectra, however, is the interpretation methodology. In this study, FTIR spectra were calibrated against quantitative X-ray diffraction data for the determination of the mineralogy of iron ore. A full pattern profiling machine learning technique was utilised for the calibration, and the assessment of the regressions determined from an independent validation set. The abundance of key minerals – hematite, goethite, kaolinite and quartz – were determined and the results correlated against X-ray fluorescence assays and loss on ignition data. The results of the study indicate that spectral techniques using a full-pattern profiling machine learning approach and artificial neural networks can be used successfully to obtain objective and quantitative mineralogical data to support field observations and analytical results for iron ore resource modelling. Previous paleodepth studies of low-sulphidation epithermal Au-Ag deposits in the Coromandel region indicated that economic gold mineralisation was generally limited to a depth zone of 100 to 400 m below the paleosurface. Notable exceptions are Waihi and Karangahake, where ore shoots extended to depths of about 750 and 900 m respectively. These studies have been extended to include Au-Ag, Hg and Sb epithermal deposits in Northland and the Taupo Volcanic Zone. The main paleodepth indicators used are sinters and hydrothermal eruption breccias, hydrostatic pressures estimated from homogenisation temperature measurements on fluid inclusions, and hydrothermal alteration mineralogy. Also the occurrence of lacustrine and fluvial sediments is an indicator of the paleosurface at their time of deposition. Selected paleodepth indicators have been compiled and mapped in a GIS environment. The distribution of the paleodepth indicators are used to define regional variations in erosion levels, and may be useful in predicting areas most likely to preserve the optimum depth window for gold deposition. In the Coromandel region, regional stream sediment geochemical data has also been used to broadly define erosion levels in terms of Zn, Pb and Cu representing deeper base metal zone mineralization and Hg and Sb representing shallower cinnabar and stibnite mineralisation. The interpretations of paleodepth and potential reconstruction of paleosurfaces are limited by the paucity of data, poor age control on the paleodepth indicators and the epithermal deposits, and marked relief and complex stratigraphy in the volcanic terranes.
