The monosaccharides glucose, galactose and arabinose, and the polyols glycerol and mannitol (0.1 Ufo WIV) supported pure and mixed culture heterotrophic bacterial manganese leaching of solid pyrolusite (MnO2, 2% W/V) to yield 14-38 mg/litre manganous ion in 3 days from a simple mineral salts media at 30°C. Supplementation of pure bacterial isolates growing on glucose with soluble intracellular photosynthate from freshwater algae (0.07 g/l carbohydrate) and marine algae (0.11 g/l) led to an improvement in Mn++ yields of 24 and 100 per cent respectively. Extracellular products of the freshwater algae (0.3 g/l carbohydrate) boosted recoveries by 57 per cent.

An account is given of experimental apparatus for generating a short duration high velocity water jet and the effect of its impingement on various rock samples under air or water cover. The penetration was found to be highly dependent upon the rock structure; in general material with closely interlocking grains was resistant.The damage sustained by a stationary sample held close to the jet did not vary greatly whether the sample was in air or confined under a water layer; but when the sample was translated under the jet there was a marked increase in the damage sustained.Some consideration was given to the possible practical application of a water jet for deep hole drilling and an estimate made of the power requirements and transmission losses for such a system.

In preparing this paper, the writer hopes to achieve two main objects. Firstly, an indication of the desirable features of coke from the viewpoint of a blast furnace operator should be of assistance and value to those connected with coal and coke research, coal mining, the manufacture of coke and the production of iron. Secondly, it is hoped that the conclusions and opinions expressed herein, which are known to be of a controversial nature, will promote some discussion and thought. In this way, other workers may see fit to contribute and enlarge our general knowledge of Australian coke and its behaviour in blast furnaces.Those properties of coke that are considered to be of importance to blast furnace operation will be examined. Although broadly speaking, the composition and characteristics of coke are inherent in the coals used, any special features of coal preparation and carbonization that affect the resultant coke will be discussed. An attempt will also be made to indicate the effect on blast furnace operation of significant irregularities in these properties.THE FUNCTION OF COKE IN A BLAST FURNACECoke has four important functions in a blast furnace:1. To reduce the oxides of iron and other elements to metal and to provide the carbon absorbed by the iron.2. To supply the necessary heat for the process.3. To provide an open supporting structure in which the descending ore and limestone lie exposed to the action of the ascending gas.4. To provide voidage in the bottom of the furnace, so that iron and slag can accumulate in the hearth.

A general outline of the significant features in the quality and manufacture of the more common refractories is given. Where possible, linkage between quality development and control and service applicationhas been shown and explained. INTRODUCTIONThe refractory industry is no stranger to change. New processes and revision of old processes in other industries are the harbinger of new and revised products in refractories.Few of the changes are dramatic; generally they are evolutionary rather than revolutionary. New developments are additional to, and inclusive of, established practice.Therefore in this paper it is necessary to repeat much of what is already known in order to show the development taking place.FIRECLAY REFRACTORIESGeneral technology Fireclay refractories are the most common, the most varied and the most versatile of all refractories. Virtually any composition of silica and alumina up to the composition of kaolin is possible. For purposes of comparison they may be classified in the Continental fashion in accordance with chemical composition or in the American way according to "duty". That the two methods are equivalent is shown by an inspection of the alumina-silica diagram of Bbwen and Greig (1924). 'Fireclay refractories are composed of a glassy and a crystalline component derived from the chemical and physical nature of the raw materials used in their manufacture.

This paper gives an overview of the difficulties associated with determining the strength of hard rock pillars. Although a number of pillar design tools are available, pillar collapses still occur. Recent examples of large scale pillar collapses in South Africa were caused by weak partings which traversed the pillars. Currently two different methods to determine the strength of pillars are used namely, empirical equations derived from the back analyses of failed and stable cases and numerical modelling tools with an appropriate failure criteria. Both techniques have their limitations and additional work is required to obtain a better understanding of pillar strength. Empirical methods are popular and easy to use, but care should be exercise that the results are not extrapolated beyond the range of the data which were used to derive them. An example is the Hedley and Grant formula (derived for the Canadian uranium mines) that has been used for many years in the South African platinum and chrome mines (albeit with some adaptation of the K-value) to design the pillar layouts. Very few collapses have nevertheless been reported and it might even be too conservative an assumption of pillar strength in these mines. As an alternative, some engineers strongly advocate the use of numerical techniques to determine pillar strength. A close examination unfortunately reveals that these techniques also rely on many flawed assumptions. An area where numerical modelling is invaluable, however, is to study specific pillar failure mechanisms, such as the influence of weak partings on pillar strength. In conclusion, it appears that neither empirical techniques nor numerical modelling currently provide a solid basis to conduct pillar design. It is therefore recommended that both these techniques be utilised when confronted with a pillar design to obtain the best possible insight into the problem.

BHP's two million tonne per annum nominal capacity Hot Briquetted Iron (HBI) plant at Port Hedland in the Pilbara region of Western Australia is based on FINMET¦¦ direct reduction technology. The FINMET¦¦ process produces direct reduced iron (DRI) by reacting fine iron ore with reformed natural gas in a series of fluid bed reactors and then hot briquetting this DRI into dense, high quality iron briquettes. The Port Hedland HBI project represents a major investment in the chemical processing of Australian minerals to higher value products prior to export to Asian markets. This paper describes the FINMET" process and technical aspects of the high-quality HBI product, and provides an update of the current status of the project.

In New South Wales, development applications for major coal mining proposals are determined by the Minister for Planning and Environment and applications for mining leases and other mineral titles are dealt with by the Minister for Mineral Resources. The environmental conditions placed on the development consent, the coal mining lease and the approvals and licences under the pollution control legislation, amount to a substantial component of any new project's planning and commissioning considerations.An outline is presented of the framework within which various approvals are granted and conditions for environmental management are imposed upon mining projects. The principles and concerns, as perceived by the regulatory authorities, on which the majority of approval conditions are based are also outlined.No attempt has been made to analyse the extent to which these principles or standards are achieved in practice, nor to discuss the degree to which some of the conditions are achievable with the current status of technology and economics in the coal industry.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Kendenggaoer-Kuokuqueke region lies in the western part of Chinese North-western Tianshan. New laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry zircon U-Pb geochronology for five separate granitic plutons for this region reveal two distinct intrusive periods: late Devonian (367~361 Ma) and late Carboniferous (315~301 Ma). These intrusions all share an arc-like geochemical affinity (ie enrichment of large ion lithosphere elements and negative anomalies of Nb, Ta and Ti). In situ zircon Hf isotopic compositions further differentiate the magmatic cycle, with the late Devonian intrusions yielding more depleted eHf(t) (+1.47~+6.54) composition than the late Carboniferous intrusions (eHf(t) = +4.95~+9.79). These geochemical data suggest that they might be mainly derived from different source regions and the tectonic setting was transformed into post-collisional in the late Carboniferous. As in many significant porphyry-ore districts, this dramatic tectonic reconfiguration, combined with melting of an evolved crust, resulted in genesis of metal-bearing melts. Furthermore, we can show that Neoproterozoic mafic juvenile lower crust intruded by mantle-derived melts and/or partial melting of slab material generated hybrid primary magma during subduction of the Palaeo-Junggar oceanic crust in the late Devonian. Up to the end of World War n, flat-back cut and fill stoping with or without square sets was the universal method of ore extraction. Rapid changes in practice occurred during the post-war years; first, ore extraction was fully mechanized; secondly, the stope design for new levels, notably No. 17 Level Zinc Corporation Ltd. and No. 19 Level New Broken Hill Consolidated Ltd., was modified to suit this mechanization; and thirdly, sub-level and shrinkage stopes were developed in orebodies where cut and fill methods would be uneconomical. The following is a brief survey of the changes that have occurred-most of which were inaugurated during the last five years.ROCK DRILLINGDuring 1951 open stoping was investigated in detail. In order to reduce steel handling problems, forged steel onepass detachable bits were introduced, but were soon superseded by the "Swedish method". Investigation showed that when using a bar and arm mounted 3-in. drifter the overall drilling time was approximately 6 min. per ft. compared with 4 min. per ft. using the light jackhammer-airleg combination with 1-in. hex. by 4-in. collared shank tungsten carbide-tipped steel.Although competitive with tipped steels on a cost per foot drilled basis (excluding miner's time), detachable steel bits proved most unsatisfactory for hard drilling conditions.Rapid blunting necessitated frequent bit changes and thus caused lost drilling time. The Broken Hill orebody ,occurs in the Willyama Complex, a block of Precambrian rocks which have been strongly folded and metamorphosed at moderate to high grade. Although -the origin of the silver-lead-zinc mineralization remains obscure, recent investigations have substantiated the view that the orebody has undergone concomitant high grade metamorphism with the enclosing wallrocks. The mesoscopic structures produced by this metamorphism are described, and the possible processes Telating to their formation are disoussed.In the high grade ore, metamorphic structures which can be recognized are foliation and lineation, wallrock fragments, layering, flow folds, ore breccias, and sulphide bearing veins. These structures can be related to processes involving plastic flow and fluid phase transport of the mineral assemblage. 'In areas of low grade mineralization adjacent to high grade ore, the structures more closely resemble those produced in -the wallrocks-foliatlon, lineation, layering, folds, and sulphide injections. Within areas of high grade ore, lenses and pods of manganese silicates Probably represent original inhomogeneities in the ore, i.e., portions of manganese-rich and sulphide deficient rock which have been metamorphosed to manganese silicates.From the structures displayed, a sequence of events has been established for the plastic flow of ore during deformation.

At the Orieco mine quartz veins carrying sulphides were localized in parts of an extensive fault zone in the Mathinna Beds during late Middle Palaeozoic mineralization.These deposits were subsequently exposed, and oxidation of the sulphides by percolating groundwaters resulted in the formation of gossans at the surface, and replacement close to the permanent water table of the more soluble sulphides by copper sulphides (chalcocite, coveIlite). A restricted zone containing copper oxides (cuprite, tenorite), copper carbonates (malachite, azurite), iron arsenates (scorodite, pharmacosiderite) and possibly rare copper sulphates occurred above the water table.The renewed oxidation of these deposits following mine development has been facilitated by the ready circulation of air and water combined with the formation of large free surfaces ideal for evaporation of aqueous solutions. Under these new conditions of high initial sulphate concentration, low pH, and relatively high Eh, the previously formed mineral assemblage is unstable and numerous Cu (Fe,Zn)-sulphates and Fe (Cu,Pb)-arsenates are presently forming in fractures in the fault zone and on the adit and stope surfaces for some considerable distance from the Sulphide-rich ore shoots. The observed spatial sequence of the major sulphates with respect to the sulphide-rich zones (Le. chalcanthite-antleritebrochantite and langite) is consistent with decreasing sulphate concentration and increasing pH away from the oxidizing sulphides.

This paper describes the results of VLF-EM test surveys, using the Ronka EM-16 equipment, over a selection of environments in Australia and Papua.Using comparisons with known geology, drilling information and other geophysical work it is shown that the maximum depth of penetration of the method is about 100 ft but is considerably less than this in most areas.The author believes the method could aid in geological mapping and provide a useful adjunct to aeromagnetic surveying in some areas.

The Commission maintains a data base first computerised in 1957 and containing information from over 18 000 boreholes located mainly in the Latrobe Valley area. Some of the borehole derived information dates from the turn of the century, although most of it has been collected as a result of Commission investigations conducted over the past 40 years. The Resource Data Base contains not only information gained directly from the drilling itself but includes the results of chemical and physical testing on many hundreds of thousands of samples retrieved from boreholes. Replacement value of the Resource Data Base has been estimated to be around $200 million, and it's integrity and accessibility is clearly of paramount importance, not only to existing mining and power generating functions but to the future evaluation and use of the vast brown coal Resource.

The only economically significant deposit of dolomite in New Zealand is at Mount Burnett, in north-west Nelson. The dolomite, associated with marbles and schists, is complexly deformed, and is of Paleozoic age.A very large quantity is present, although the recoverable amount is to some extent limited by the difficult terrain.Physically the quality of the dolomite is excellent. It is a tough, durable, fine grained rock. Chemically it is a little more variable. The range and frequency o~ the more important impurities are illustrated by hlstograms, as is the "dolomite factor"-a measure of the amount of the mineral dolomite in the rock. lbe dolomite factor averages 84 per cent, the remainder of the rock consisting largely of calcite. Quarrying, milling, production, and uses are described. In 1966 production reached 13,250 tons.

The following paper describes the refining practice for the production of lead, silver and gold at the works of The Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty. Ltd., Port Pirie, South Australia.The refinery is situated on the wharf frontage and is built parallel with it. The refinery occupies an area of approximately 3380 square yards. (Fig. 8)There are two buildings, one containing the softening and de-silverising sections, measuring 225 ft. x 57t ft., while the other building, which measures 225 ft. x 90 ft. covers the de-zincing, lead moulding, retorting, cupellation, and dore parting sections. (Fig. 1)The retorting, cupellation, and dore parting sections are completely isolated from the rest of the plant by strong small-mesh wire gratings welded to steel uprights. The dore parting plant and generator room are further isolated by a brick wall, built up to the roof. The two main buildings are steel structures, with outer walls and roof of "Robertson" corrugated sheeting; the side and end walls are open for some distance above the ground, and this, coupled with the high roof which is 50 ft. from ground level, ensures the free access of air and light. Conditions are such that operators work in a clear atmosphere.

The importance of goethite to Australian iron ore production is steadily increasing as the proportion of goethite-rich, martite-goethite bedded and channel iron deposits increases at the expense of declining production from high-grade microplaty hematite deposits. For this reason, an improved understanding of goethite in iron deposits, its genesis, goethite types and their physical and metallurgical properties is vital to maintaining optimum sintering and blast furnace performance in Asian steel mills.The terminology used to describe goethite in Australian iron deposits is currently highly variable. The discredited mineral name ‘limonite’ is still in widespread use as a field term for goethite and there are many misconceptions concerning goethite chemical grade and downstream physical and metallurgical properties. The goethite classification proposed here is based on geological and physical properties from which three types are recognised including brown goethite, dark brown-black vitreous goethite and highly microporous, friable yellow ochreous goethite.In practice, typical vitreous goethite with highly reflective surfaces and conchoidal fracturing, characteristic of the hard cap zone appears from X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and electron microprobe analysis to be significantly higher in Si (up to 18.7 wt per cent), Al (up to 3.5 wt per cent) and S (up to 0.14 wt per cent) compared to the generally very low (<1 wt per cent for Si and Al) levels of these elements in ochreous goethite and brown goethite. The data dispels the common misconception that friable earthy or yellow ochreous goethite is high in Al and Si and other chemical impurities. However, P was found to be consistently higher (mean of 0.112 wt per cent and up to 0.296 wt per cent) in ochreous goethite than brown goethite (mean of 0.011 wt per cent) or vitreous goethite (mean of 0.031 wt per cent). The highly porous microstructure of ochreous goethite is thought to have a much higher surface area, which may aid in preferential adsorption of P onto the ochreous goethite mineral surface.CITATION:Manuel, J R and Clout, J M F, 2017. Mr. H. W. GEPP said he desired to bring particular attention to this paper. The underlying intention of the Development and Migration Commission when the paper was prepared was to place at the disposal of Australian miners and metallurgists the story of the development of tin metallurgy as it had been advanced in other countries, particularly Great Britain. They had very considerable resources of low-grade tin-bearing metals in the eastern coast of Australia particularly, and they need not anticipate that tin was going to remain at the extremely low price at which they saw it to-day. The Commission felt that it was most desirable to place 'on record, and make easily available, the story of the treatment of comparatively low-grade tin ores in other parts of the world.Arrangements were made that the technical staff at Australia House, in conjunction with Mr. H. S. Elford; should collect this information so that in due course, when Australia awoke to an interest in low-grade deposits, of which there were many throughout Australia, this story would then not,have to be gathered from other areas and other places of the world. The -paper was a contribution which would turn out to be of very great value. He suggested to the younger members that this thorough contribution could be made the subject of study so that they would be ready to assist in the developments which must come. Mr. WM. APLIN said there was one point in connection with the paper upon which he would like to speak. While at Mount Morgan he had occasion to test some highly pyritic tin ore by flotation, with a view to separating the cassiterite from the pyritic mineral.Instead of accomplishing that, it was discovered that it would be possible to eliminate as much as 50% of the total weight of ore in the form of a pyritic flotation concentrate, which would contain...

Volcanic-hosted massive sulfide (VHMS) deposits in ancient, submarine volcanic belts of Australia include mound, lens and sheet-style Zn-rich polymetallic deposits, massive and disseminated pyritic Cu-Au deposits and disseminated, stratabound Au-only deposits. Variation in morphologies, metal ratios, volcanic environments and alteration features indicates there exists a spectrum of deposits from the classic VHMS model, to hybrids between VHMS-porphyry Cu and VHMS-epithermal end members. Zn-rich, polymetallic deposits form eitheron, or just below, the seafloor, whereas the Cu-Au and Au-only deposits form sub-seafloor by replacement of specific volcanic lithologies. Alteration zoned outwards from quartz -> chlorite -> sericite ¦ carbonate is typical of VHMS deposits across the spectrum. Quartz and carbonate alteration is dominant in the Au-only systems,chlorite alteration is commonly developed close to Cu-rich ores, and sericite and carbonate alteration zones are well developed in the stratiform Zn-rich ores. The most useful geochemical vectors for Zn-rich ores are the alteration index [AI=100(MgO + K2O)/(MgO + K2O + CaO + Na2O)], the chlorite-carbonate-pyrite index [CCPI=100(MgO + FeO)/(MgO + FeO + K2O + Na2O)], Mn content of carbonate, Mg/(Mg+Fe) ratio of chlorite,whole-rock Tl, Sb and Ba/Sr ratio, S34S of pyrite, and whole-rock S18O. The most useful vectors for pyritic Cu-Au ores are AI, CCPI, S/Na2O ratio, Na content of white mica, and Fe content of carbonate.

On-stream determination of xanthate concentrations can be made by photometric measurements at 313 nm.A simple double-beam instrument was developed for this purpose. A mercury lamp is used as the light source and a composite filter of UGll glass and chromate solution is used to isolate the required spectral region. The light beam is split into two components of approximately equal intensity. One component is passed through a reference cell containing water to a photo detector; the other component is passed through the xanthate solution to a second photo detector. The reference signal controls amplifier gain to eliminate effects of lamp intensity changes and the amplified sample signal can then be used to measure xanthate concentration.Plant trials showed that provided a clear solution free of air bubbles was obtained from an on-stream filter, the instrument indicated the xanthate concentration and operated satisfactorily for long periods.

Lacustrine sediments, hydrothermal explosion breccias and spring precipitates deposited 5200 - 1800 years BP as a result of geothermal activity at Lake Rotokaua, contain New Zealand's largest known sulphur reserves. Current drill indicated reserves are 2 600 000 tonnes of elemental sulphur, assuming a ten per cent (dry basis) cut-off, contained in some 17 000 000 tonnes of ore with an average grade of 214.0 per cent (dry basis) sulphur. Additional inferred ore containing 500 000 - 900 000 tonnes of sulphur has yet to be prospected by drilling. Geological factors will be important in exploitation of the deposit, particularly the extent and disposition of the orebody, sulphur grades and distribution, physical characteristics of the ore, permeability and stability of the overburden and the nature and extent of geothermal activity in the area. Trials to date indicate that Frasch mining and possibly opencutting are unlikely to be successful mining methods. Further mining feasibility studies will be required to ascertain the most likely mining system for the deposit.
