"Greenhouse gas emissions—specifically of carbon dioxide—are a concern in Canada, where industrial sectors such as mining are stringently regulated for carbon release. Cumulative emissions are positively related to fuel consumption, which is controlled by several factors. This study investigates one of these factors: the product of vehicle speed and running surface total resistance (TR; sum of rolling resistance and grade resistance). Results show that TR directly affects fuel consumption and emissions—a relationship that is mathematically predictable. Fuel consumption and emissions, which are principally associated with the durability or deterioration of wearing course materials, were analyzed to aid selection of road construction capping material of low rolling resistance. In the oil sands region in the province of Alberta, ground conditions change seasonally. Therefore, the annual fuel consumption for the same wearing course material was also compared. Results demonstrated that haul truck size was a contributing factor, but vehicle speed and TR more strongly influenced fuel consumption and emissions. ¦ KEYWORDS Carbon dioxide, Emissions, Fuel consumption, Grade resistance (GR), Greenhouse gas (GHG), Haul truck, Rolling resistance (RR), Total resistance (TR) RÉSUMÉ Les émissions de gaz à effet de serre (GES), et particulièrement celles de dioxyde de carbone, sont un problème au Canada, où les secteurs industriels tels que l’exploitation minière sont rigoureusement réglementés pour leurs émissions de carbone. Pres-sure on world leaders to quickly reduce their carbon footprint is prevalent, prompting new standards and regulations in various industries, including mining and oil and gas. In 2017, the Government of Alberta implemented a carbon tax. The majority of mining activities in this province are truck-shovel operations, where a large fleet of ultra-class trucks is loaded by shovels. Ultra-class haul trucks, classified as those with a capacity of 218–363 tonnes (t), emit high levels of carbon as they travel to processing entry points and waste dumps as designated by the mine plan and mine dispatcher. "IS YOUR MANAGEMENT CONTROLLOOP FUNCTIONINGMineral processors make use of hundreds of control circuits in their mills, process plants, smelters and refineries, to optimize throughput and recovery and minimize cost. This afternoon, I would like to discuss what is probably the weakest circuit in any mineral processing operation - the management control loop.In their recent book ""The Winning Streak"", Goldsmith and Clutter describe extensive research on unsuccessful companies. They conclude that ineffective control, which does not immediately identify the problems, is one of the main failings of unsuccessful companies.We will look at the three key components of control which, from the manager's point of view, ensure that the loop is complete. These three are:• measuring what's happening,• assessing its significance, Rnd• altering performance.If we compare management control to process control as shown in this first figure, ""We see that parameter sensing by the analyzer in a process circuit is analogous to performance monitoring by management in a responsibility centre. The analyzer senses temperature, pressure, flow, weight or some surrogate indicator such as colour to indicate ion concentration. Daring to try where others had failed, Herbert and Lou Henry Hoover translated from the Latin the principal (and first) textbook on the mining and metallurgical profession, De Re Metallica, 1556, which had been in use for two centuries and then had lain dormant for 350 years in a language unreadable except by a chosen few. Thus the Hoovers enriched the English tongue with a vitally important contribution to history in the fields of mining, metallurgy, and chemistry. To them it was a joint hobby, because they were actively interested in the beginnings of the mining profession in which they had both been trained. Illuminating the years of toil to perfect this translation shone their ideal of service to humanity, since, in the Preface, they refer to their task as "a labour of love", which had to find the moments for its execution in night hours, weekends, and holidays, extending over a period of about five years. And they add: "If the work serves to strengthen the traditions of one of the most important and least recognized of the world's professions, we shall be amply repaid". While a student at Stanford University, during the years of 1891-95, Herbert Hoover had become familiar with a copy of this Latin mineralogy classic, De Re Metallica, a rare book in the private library of Dr. John C. Branner, at that time head of the department of geology and mining. Another Stanford student in geology was also examining and studying the ponderous volume of twelve 'books'. She was Miss Lou Henry, of Monterey, who graduated in 1898, and the following year became Mrs. Herbert Hoover. Interwoven through the tapestry of their life experiences gleamed the silver thread of their interest in this mediaeval Latin textbook. Just nine years lacer, the Hoovers had commenced their translation, while they were in temporary residence in London after the seething years in China under the shadow of the Boxer rebellion.

"Column flotation circuit engineering has matured to a good level of understanding regarding testing, scale-up and design. Some of the factors important to the process of implementing columns are addressed in this paper, highlighting the following issues• operating bias and the maximum achievable solids carrying rate for a column application.• internal circulating loads of full scale and pilot plant flotation columns• short-circuiting oflarge scale columns and the impact on separation selectivity• the number of stages in a column circuit and the impact on selectivity.The paper uses several case studies, from pilot plant to full scale implementation, to illustrate these design issues.1. IntroductionTen years ago, in 1984, there were very few column flotation installations world wide and the largest columns were about I . 5 to 2 m diameter or square. During the following decade there have been in the heighbourhood of 80 column installations that have been successful and profitable, as both retrofits and green-fields plants. Now, columns as large as 3 to 4 m are not uncommon. Examples of installations with many large columns include Escondida, with ten columns each at 4 m square, and P T Freeport Indonesia, with 21 columns: nine 3 m diameter columns, four 2.4 m diameter columns and, starting up in April I 995, eight 3.6 m diameter columns.During this growth period there have also been column installations that can be considered as failures. In the majority of these cases, the reason for their failure has been an insufficient installed capacity for applications where there is a high weight recovery of solids to the froth product These include zinc cleaning, copper cleaning and iron ore flotation (silica flotation from a feed that is 15 to 30 %Si02) An application with high weight recovery to the froth product makes column scale-up and circuit design more complicated. This is particularly so if a high degree of selectivity is also required while attaining a high weight recovery, which can happen with iron ore flotation in columns."

ABSTRACT - The Bathurst-Newcastle district, a subcircular area approximately 50 km in diameter, contains 37 massive-sulfide Zn-Pb-Cu deposits that have defined tonnages, and has 58 additional significant occurrences. The largest deposit is Brunswick No . 12, with total reserves (including past production) of 148 million tonnes grading about 12.50% combined Pb-Zn. The deposits/ occurrences are spatially associated with a felsic volcanic pile that contains a significant sedimentary component. In the vicinity of the Brunswick deposits the pile is divisible into lower and upper sequences. The lower is characterized by megacrystic rhyolite (QFAS) and coarse- to fine-grained quartz ( ± feldspar) wackes and/or tuffites (QAS); the upper sequence is characterized by aphyric to sparsely porphyritic rhyolites (HWR), micro-breccias, and acid hyaloclastites with interbedded dark gray sedimentary rocks. A greenish gray to dark gray siltstone (GGS) separates the two sequences and hosts the sulfide deposits. Lithogeochemistry of !east altered samples shows that the QFAS and HWR have an igneous character, whereas the QAS and GGS have a sedimentary sig­ nature. The two types can be distinguished on the basis of total alkalies (Na2O + K2O) versus SiO2/Al2O3, and Ti02 versus Fe/(Fe+ Mg). Some trace elements, such as Sr and Y, also help differentiate the two types. The QFAS differs from HWR by having higher La/Yb ratios but lower Zr and Th. The Bathurst deposits do not show a close spatial association with rhyolites but rather are stratiform bodies (lacking clastic textures) within fine-grained sedimentary rocks. The scarcity of barite and other sulfates indicates that there was little mixing between the metal­ bearing fluids and cold seawater. High Fe/(Fe+ Mg) ratios in chlorites also indicate the fluids did not contain a significant seawater component. These features and the large size of many deposits suggest that the deposits formed from metal-rich pore waters that were released catastrophically from an acquifer in the footwall stratigraphy.

"In January 1983, Gibraltar Mines Ltd. started an exploratory program on Column Flotation with hopes of improving performance of the Molybdenum Cleaning circuit. The encouraging results led to a column test trial in the Bulk Copper Cleaner circuit where the test unit has per¬formed well. A program was undertaken to understand the mechanics of column operation. A year and a half later, Gibraltar is considering the replacement of existing Bulk Copper and Moly Cleaning flotation cells with a fully computer con¬trolled Column Flotation circuit.BRIEF SUMMARY OF TESTWORKInitial testwork was done with a home made 20 inch diameter x 31 foot high column, equipped with a doppler flow-meter at the tail line and automatic level conrol. This loop maintained constant level in the column by throttling the tail valve. This column was placed in a variety of locations around the Moly circuit as shown on Figure 1 a, b. Test re¬sults indicated that the column could achieve much higher grades than the conventional cells, but recovery wise, the performance was low. Spillages from overloaded pump boxes were a common frustration during this time.Column control strategy was reviewed; and, in light of information received from McGill University, changed to conform with the methods that had been employed by D. Wheeler, of the Column Co. of Canada4 and Gaspe Copper Mines3.The column was tested replacing a portion of the bank, figure lc. The results obtained were more or less equal to the circuit. However, as we had Nitrogen gas connected to the column and not the regular cells, the column was kept in service. With the use of Nitrogen in the column, the usual copper depressant, Sodium Cyanide could be replaced with Sodium Hydrosulphide, hence lower operating cost.As time went on, a 10 inch diameter column was added in series to re-treat the concentrate of the 20 inch diameter column with hopes that the copper content would decrease from 0.6% down to 0.3% in order to save on subsequent leach¬ing costs. So far, results indicate there has been some im-provement, hut we are not achieving 0.3% copper. (See figure 1d)."

"The Texada Mill is a unique iron operation producing High Grade sinter iron concentrate and a by-product copper, gold, silver concentrate. The plant is complex and extremely flexible to handle the many varieties of ore. Two iron concentrates are made and blended. A coarse iron concentrate from primary grinding and a fine concentrate after rougher flotation to remove all the sulphides.All the tailings from iron processing are collected, dewatered, reground and floated for additional copper recovery.The entire milling operation has been carried out in all sea water for seven years and mixtures of sea, fresh, and reclaimed water for ten years prior to that.A very stable float results from the use of sea water at the natural pH8. Reagent Consumption is lower and Metallic Corrosion of mill liners and grinding media is actually less than local fresh water or mixtures of fresh and sea water.Marine growth in pipe lines can be periodically removed by violently bubbling high pressure air up through the water filled mains.Location:Texada Mines is located on tide water on the west side of Texada Island 100 miles northwest of Vancouver, B. C.The Island is served by a 30 car ferry, tug and barge and a scheduled air service from Vancouver to a company maintained air strip near the mine.The climate is moderate with about 30 inches of rain during the winter and relatively dry summers."

"The McArthur River uranium deposit is the single richest uranium ore body developed in the world to date. The ore body’s average grade is 15% U3O8. Proven reserves are in excess of 450 million pounds. The grinding circuit is located underground. The ground ore is pumped to a surface facility where the slurry is thickened and loaded into containers for shipping to the Key Lake mill 78 kilometers to the south.The paper will briefly describe the mining method employed. The underground ore handling and grinding circuit, and surface facilities including slurry load out, wastewater treatment and the freeze plant will be described in detail. The paper will emphasize radiation and safety procedures that are followed to minimize operator exposure to radiation risks.LOCATIONThe McArthur River mine is located 78 kilometres north of the Key Lake mill. It is located at latitude 57’ N in northern Saskatchewan, within the southern boundary of the Athabasca formation. The nearest town is Pinehouse, located 320 kilometres to the south. Access to the mine is by an all weather road and by a private airstrip.HISTORYThe McArthur River Operation is jointly owned by Cameco Corporation (69.805%) and Cogema Resources Inc. (30.195%). Exploration for uranium in the McArthur River area started in 1980 by the Saskatchewan Mining Development Corporation, a predecessor company of Cameco.In 1984, a 12-kilometre long basement conductor was identified at a depth exceeding 500 metres. Systematic exploration drilling of this conductor resulted in the discovery of the P2 North deposit. Subsequent surface drilling programs from 1989 to 1992 delineated a narrow ore zone over a strike length of 1700 meters at a depth of 500 to 600 metres. At this time, geological reserves for the deposit were estimated to be 2.4 million tonnes at a grade of 5.0% U3O8 for a uranium content of 260 million pounds U308"

The orebody and mill site are 4 km distant from Strathcona Sound which provides deep water anchorage for ocean transportation of concentrate to Europe during the short northern shipping season from mid-July to mid-October.The operations and the resident community have direct jet aircraft service from Montreal two days per week, and local nights connect with other Arctic communities in the northern Baffin region. Bulk supplies and general cargo are delivered in the summer shipping season.1.2 HistoryThe Texas Gulf Sulphur Company, now Kidd Creek Mines Limited, staked claims in the Nanisivik area in 1957 and carried out exploration through to 1968. After the Kidd Creek orebody was found, Texas Gulf optioned the property in 1972 to Mineral Resources International Inc. (MRI), which undertook further exploration and completed a feasibility study.Nanisivik Mines Ltd. was formed in 1975, with MRI as the majority shareholder and minority shareholdings held by Metallgesellschaft, Billiton and Texas Gulf. Strathcona Mineral Services Limited was retained to manage the project during both the construction and operational phases."

"ABSTRACTThe paper addresses the application of automated monitoring, control, and navigation to improve dragline performance. SummaryImproving dragline performance in the Canadian coal mines is critical to the continued success of the industry. Draglines represent a large capital investment and coal prices are low by historic standards. This paper argues that the introduction of monitoring, control, and navigation on draglines offers an opportunity to significantly reduce a dragline’s operating cost per cubic metre moved. To place the importance of this in perspective, a North Dakota mine calculates that every 1% increase in dragline productivity means a savings to the mine of US$340,000 per year. MonitorsAutomated dragline monitoring is a well established technology with commercial products available since the early 1980s. The three main reasons for placing monitors on draglines are (Walker, 1993):1. productivity increases: reduce variations between different operators’ performance across different shifts;2. quality increases: increase the percentage of ore and waste loads that go to the correct destination; and3. special projects (engineering projects): justify installing static field exciters and regulator upgrades; implement power management; aid operator training; study high performance buckets, rigging changes, and various excavation sequences.Mines as diverse as Kennecott’s Cordero- Rojo Complex in the United States and Natal Coal Corp.’s Optimum Mine in South Africa report dragline productivity increases of 10% to 20% in the region attributed to the implementation of dragline monitoring."

"Xstrata Nickel’s Raglan operation, northern Québec, achieved paymetal recovery gains in 2007 by switching the collector from potassium amyl xanthate to sodium isobutyl xanthate. To follow on from that position, Xstrata Process Support (XPS) and A. Di Feo of Raglan proposed that a mixed xanthate system be formulated and tested towards further performance gains. This work selected ethyl and isobutyl xanthates as the candidates. An optimized ratio of these was to be determined by a designed experiment. This suggestion was based on an abundance of published literature that reported mixed collector systems outperformed single ones. A partial factorial design was used to configure four test conditions and a mid-square for the flotation work. The testwork was conducted using High Confidence Flotation Testing. The raw data were analyzed and modelled by Design-Expert software. An optimum ratio of 1.6:1.0 by mass (1.32:1.0 in molar terms) of isobutyl:ethyl xanthate was determined. Without this modelling, the optimum ratio would have been missed. Results obtained with the new baseline flotation test using this optimized mixture showed a 3.3% Ni recovery gain in the bypass concentrate and more than 1% recovery gain for PGM over the single PIBX system. This system has been proposed for and accepted as a plant scale trial in the first half of 2010.INTRODUCTIONConcentrator OperationsMilling and flotation of sulphide ores ahead of smelting and refining is a common practice. "IntroductionThe copper-molybdenum property of Brenda Mines Ltd. is located 18 miles north west of Peachland in the Okanagan Valley of the Southern Central interior of British Columbia. The actual site is 50 miles north of the international boundary and 150 air miles east of Vancouver at an elevation of 5000 feet above sea level. The earliest written mention of the prospect is found in the Geological Survey of Canada, Memoir No. 243, issued in 1947 by Dr. H.M.A. Rice. In 1954 the area was staked by a prospector, Bob Bechtel, who interested Bern Brynelsen of Noranda Exploration in examining the claims. A joint Noranda - Kennecott program resulted but since the grades were so low the property was not taken up until in 1964 a re-examination by Chapman, Wood and Griswold produced recommendations leading to the construction of the Brenda Mine as it is today.The rounded, timber covered mountains of the area are composed of the tuffs, argillites and limestones of the Upper Triassic Nicola Group, which is intruded by a Jurassic quartz diorite, called the Brenda stock0 The actual orebody occurs in a strongly fractured zone within the Brenda stock, approximately 1500 feet from the contact with the Nicola group0 The ore minerals, .chalcopyrite and molybdenite, associated with pyrite and magnetite of lesser importance, occur as fillings within the fractures 0 The grade of the ore decreases outwards from a central higher grade core and in January 1971 total reserves were estimated at 165 million tons assaying 0,182% Copper and 0,049% Mo."

Following a short review of the history of rails used in the transport of passengers and goods, this paper describes the process for rail fabrication, rail structure, and properties, and summarizes the fatigue test curves carried out on rails used today. Also reported is the process for “continuous rail” production using aluminothermic welding via the introduction of weld metal in onsite casting, as a homogeneous melt. Weld characteristics of aluminothermic welding using different preheating procedures—fusion zone, heat-affected zone, microstructure, hardness, slow bend test, and fatigue test resistance (Wöhler curves)—are related to preheating and welding procedures of 700, 900, and 1,100 MPA rail grades. The Locati method is preferred over the staircase method for ascertaining the fatigue limit due to its simplicity. Macrographic and metallographic inspection of broken specimens reveals the reliability of welding techniques and the good metallurgical quality of welds.

"An autogenous grinding circuit was commissioned at the Brunswick concentrator in October 1998. The autogenous grinding circuit replaced existing surface crushing plants, fine ore storage, rod and primary ball mills. The 8.54m diameter x 4.27m long (EGL) AN1 mill is driven by a bidirectional variable speed 6.3MW ABB wound rotor motor with Slip Energy Recovery (SER) drive. The AG mill was subsequently converted to SAG operation in May 1999 for a number of reasons. The mill is operated in closed circuit with horizontally inclined 660mm diameter cyclones to produce a circuit product P80 of 85 microns. Extensive test work and JKSimMet design modeling resulted in a production circuit operating closely within design expectations.The circuit is highly instrumented and controlled via a hybrid Programmable Logic Controller (PLC-5) and Fisher PROVOX Distributed Control System (DCS) that is in communication with the property information highway. An expert control system (Gensym G2) is used for control of the SAG mill load.Engineering and construction were completed in 28 months from the time of management approval for the project. The Brunswick AG/SAG mill circuit was commissioned on schedule at the $M 23.5 forecast budget."

"Golden Bear Operating Company Ltd. (GBOC) was a joint venture between Chevron Minerals Ltd. and North American Metals Corp. that was formed for the development of the Golden Bear Project. The mine is located at Muddy Lake, Western British Columbia, approximately 80 km northwest of Telegraph Creek and 135 km west of Dease Lake (see Figure 1). Road access to the mine was developed by Golden Bear and consists of a radio controlled 155 km gravel road originating at highway 114.A feasibility study was completed in 1987 and project approval was finalized in 1988 with Golden Bear issuing a ""Request For Proposal"" for detailed engineering in May 1988. Golden Bear also commenced negotiating with vendors at this time for the supply of the two principal process equipment packages: the dry grinding and classification system and the whole ore roaster package.Process plant engineering and plant construction was completed in October 1989 with plant startup commencing in November 1989. Two months into the commissioning phase it became apparent that the plant, as designed, would not achieve the anticipated production targets.Kilborn Engineering Pacific were subsequently contracted by GBOC to review and modify the plant design, assist the operating personnel with plant commissioning and startup and provide operator training.This Paper describes some of the problems encountered during the startup and the plant modifications incorporated to achieve design parameters."

Following initial discovery in 1991, BHP Billiton Diamonds Inc opened Canada?s first diamond mine, the Ekati Diamond Mine TM (Ekati) in the Northwest Territories on October 14th, 1998. Four short years later on November 29th, 2002, saw the opening of North America?s first underground diamond mine - the Koala North mine. Nestled between the original Panda open pit and the new Koala pit which is in the early stages of production, Koala North represents the only underground kimberlite mining venture in arctic conditions outside the new underground mines being developed by ALROSA in the Yakutsk region of eastern Russia. Extensive underground kimberlite mining has been practiced in the Republic of South Africa for much of the 20th century and continues today. Underground mining represents a key component of the long term business plan for the Ekati. As various open pits reach their economic limit, continued recovery of high value ore at depth is dependent upon the ability to productively mine the kimberlite pipes by underground methods. As a function of its location, size, and value, the Koala North pipe is ideally positioned to host the first underground mine at Ekati . In addition to being a production source for the operation, Koala North is designed as a learning mine, from which to gain valuable experience in preparation for the potential mining of other larger, higher value pipes by underground methods in the future. Fortuitously Koala North was available for development so the learnings could be integrated into the Panda mine design prior to completion of the Panda pit. Establishing our first underground diamond mine, and applying the open benching mining method in arctic conditions brings a unique combination of mining challenges together in a harsh climate and remote environment. This paper examines the design and establishment of the Koala North mine. Discussion includes experiences gained from the first year of development, production start-up, and provides a brief overview of our potential underground future at Ekati .
